Welcome

Welcome to the November Edition… When ever school holiday’s come up I’m sure other parents will be groaning over the fact that not only does school stop, but also most of those other activities which you can get your child involved in to keep them busy. I can offer one option: sports clubs never seem to stop, our son is a member of Lewes Athletic running club and they keep him (and us) busy all year round! In this edition we also have an enterprising young man with an excellent idea for helping parents and children during school holidays - see Elliot Corner’s article on page 31 for more on this. A quick reminder that we will need articles, ads and other submissions in plenty of time for the December edition - it is always a busy one so don’t get left behind!

Adams & Remers Solicitors
Adams & Remers Rose Macfarlane of Adams & Remers
As the leaves turn gold and red and the first frost approaches, minds often turn to fireworks, bonfire nights, Christmas preparations, office parties and family gatherings. Niggling in the back of one’s mind, though rarely taking centre stage until after all the fun’s been had, is the thought that it’s also not so long before we see ads on the telly with the familiar Moira Stuart reminding us of our tax returns.
For those blessed with just PAYE employment, the flat would then be taxed at her lower rate, this particularly headache is most likely after her personal allowance, rather than at unknown, but not for all. Sally’s high rate. Take our new friends Sally and Tom – I introduced them in my last article in The Deans. Tom falls into that PAYE category. His savings and the few dividends he gets from a couple of shareholdings are all taxed at source, so it’s an easy January for him.
Once Uni is over for Katie, Sally could then direct the income elsewhere if she chose to. In the meantime, this arrangement has made the best use of the flat for the benefit of the whole family…. truly flexible planning for the family’s needs.
Sally has her own business, and as sole proprietor she knows all too well that she needs to make sure she has her paperwork together ready to tackle that self-assessment form. Each year she is finding it harder to deal with the intricacies and has recently taken advice. She is also planning to start a new internet business with her close friend, another local Mum, and their projections are very exciting. If things go as well as they hope, her income will rise substantially over the next few years.
Tom’s Mum & Dad, who live nearby, are fortunate enough to have a few different pensions from their jobs over the years. They’ve been finding it very difficult to get clarity from HMRC recently about the taxation of these different pensions. This is a general problem that many individuals and couples have faced, but some assistance from their personal tax adviser has sorted things out and now they know exactly what income they have and what tax is due. The stress and worry has been lifted.
You may remember Sally has a small flat from her student days, which she lets out. It’s worked out well the last few years, since she’s been married with children, as this provided her with some personal income before she set up the shop. However, if the internet business takes off, she will be paying high rate tax.
Maximising the tax reliefs and allowances that each individual may enjoy with joined-up thinking about one’s whole family can really make a difference. Good advice is always essential, and it’s worth seeking it out from those who have tax and estate planning expertise, with property and business legal It may therefore be sensible for Sally to think experience to boot. about whether it would be better to transfer the income from the flat between herself and Rose Macfarlane is a solicitor specialising in Tom, or even for Katie’s benefit – Tom’s wills, trusts, estate and tax planning. Artist of the month
Christine Harfleet Art at the Whiteways Centre Paintings & drawings by Christine harfleet
The Whiteways centre at Rottingdean is always a hive of industry with classes, meetings and activities. Within this community centre there is a hub of art activities – Whiteways Arts. There are several art classes which take place each week. Four watercolour techniques classes run by the renowned marine and landscape artist Mick Bensley Students may work on their own projects or one set by Mick who will demonstrate and guide you through your initial drawing, composition and watercolour techniques. He has such a relaxed and easy way of teaching that he makes you feel confident from the start no matter what your level of expertise. Amanda Davidson runs a Thursday evening 6 -8pm life drawing class. I love this class as there is always a really good model drawn from a pool of a wide variety of models. You can attend as a beginner with instruction from Amanda or as an advanced with freedom to draw or paint as you wish from the model. Amanda also has a class on Friday afternoon using general techniques of drawing and painting. She will teach how best to interpret what you see with how you feel Amanda is
always very keen on supporting each student to develop their own creative ideas whilst teaching techniques. Lucy Parker runs a Monday afternoon class 2-4pm . She runs a structured course which is suitable for both beginners and those with experience. She starts with basic drawing skills, working through most media and finishing with oil painting Demonstrations and guidance are given throughout. Aladdin’s Cave - The jewel of the centre and a joy to behold, is the newly designed and stocked art shop, run by Amanda. It has everything you could possibly want for your art activities and any one of the artist tutors will help and advise you. Of course to keep these classes running we need all you budding artists to attend – the more who enrol each term, the more classes can be accommodated, which is exciting as there are always more techniques to try and fellow artists to meet and work with. Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 38
Don’t Risk IT! For many people at the moment money is an issue, and we are all trying to “tighten our belts”. At the same time technology, and in particular computers, are becoming an integral and necessary part of our lives. So is this an area where we can cut costs? There was a very sad story that caught our attention last month: a teenager decided to strip down his old family computer that was deemed irreparable for the individual components within. He had unplugged it before taking the machine apart. The natural assumption for most people is that, as it is unplugged, it must be safe. And maybe that is what this teenager thought. Tragically, he was electrocuted, and he died. The 16 year old in question had tried to access the power supply unit - but unplugging the computer doesn’t mean the power has dissipated. We would NEVER recommend that you try and access the inner workings of your computer – or your laptop, or any other device that you plug in, even if you feel sure that
you have turned everything off and disconnected the power. The standing jokes within IT are “switch it off and then switch it on again” and “are you sure you’ve plugged it in?” but in reality electricity is no laughing matter. Business owners have a duty of care, both their staff and to any members of the public who are on their premises, to make sure that their electrical equipment is safe; but for Joe Public it is more just a case of erring on the side of caution. If you have ANY safety concerns with your computer then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us for advice. In the meantime we wish you, as always, continued happy and safe computing.

First & Foremost Entertainment Let Them Entertain You - Part 3
Christmas Parties & Company Events Whether you have been charged with organising a Christmas bash for your business and its employees, or a festive gathering for family and friends, there’s still time to get things organised. Saltdean based entertainment agency First & Foremost Entertainment Ltd has already helped many local businesses and private clients alike as Christmas celebrations and the office party season draws ever closer - but even now, it’s still not too late for you to put together a great Festive Celebration of your own. So what types of entertainment are most popular as Christmas fare, and what tips are there for creating a successful event? There is a vast amount of choice available for Christmas entertainment, but traditionally there are certain elements that fit the bill perfectly, which we are asked for time and time again. These range from Discos, Pianists, Swing Singers, Magicians and Bands, through to Tribute Acts, Harpists, Firework Displays and Caricaturists. Some performers and artists often have what is referred to as a “Christmas Set”, which means that some of their act, if booked for a Christmas party, will have a festive theme. For example, discos will play seasonal “floor fillers” and well loved Christmas songs, pianists can switch from background music to party singa-long and carols as the evening progresses, and magicians as you would expect, always have something special up their sleeves!
Finally, if you are holding a ticketed charity / fund raising Christmas dinner or party, having professional entertainment is likely to attract more interest, allows you the ability to charge more per head, and in doing so, increases the percentage going to the good cause. For more no obligation advice or to book entertainment for your Christmas or New Year party, contact First & Foremost Entertainment Ltd free on: 0800 2707 567 or mobile 07505 56 56 35 Email: info@FirstAndForemostEntertainment.com Web: www.FirstAndForemostEntertainment.com ©2012
Regardless of the type of entertainment however, the one thing that everyone is looking for these days is quality and of course, good value for money. One way to judge the intrinsic value of entertainment is to divide the artist’s fee by the number of guests attending and then by the amount of time per hour that everyone will be entertained. The other way of course is simply to see the enjoyment on your guest’s faces! Rather than dividing your party budget rigidly, try dividing it in order of priority, remembering that without music or entertainment a party is just a group of people in the same room!

Local musician - Elliot Corner
Local musician Elliot Corner On his love of music and encouraging others to follow in his foot steps I remember the days when I was first starting to learn music - I was 6 years old at Saltdean Primary School, learning the Violin in a state-funded class of 8. I had been allowed to start playing 3 years earlier than usual, because my teacher noticed my knack for singing perfectly in tune. Eventually I was asked to leave and ‘go private’ because I was too much of a disruption, as I was already playing notes with the bow while everyone else was only plucking! Now I find myself aged 18, with a publishing contract and in negotiations with a classical record label for my compositions, whilst applying to study Viola and Composition at the Royal College of Music and playing both solo and in ensembles in and around Sussex and London. Back when I was 6, I don’t think I could envisage myself doing this today. I played because I enjoyed it, and I wanted to be better. This is still the case. Music is one of those things that has been proven to have a beneficial effect on learning. In studies, It has been shown to even increase IQ by up to seven points in both children and adults. An hour a week in a 65 year old visibly changed the brain structure. Learning to play an instrument improves the skills of self-discipline, attentiveness and planning.

Many students are given the opportunity to learn an instrument in the state education system, an utterly fantastic idea! I have always found not having lessons in the holidays difficult, so I decided to offer ‘top-up’ one-off lessons in the holiday periods (Half terms, Christmas, Easter and Summer Holidays) to help keep students focused and interested. It is good practice for me teaching in the future, and a good way to save up some money for University! But these big sounding things on my ‘CV’ all grow from the smallest of seeds. I wanted to go into the fiercely competitive world of Classical music since I was 13. An inquisitive child is going to investigate their potential, no matter how bad or good they end up at being at something. Classical music will always persist, as it is completely timeless.'

St Nicholas Church Hall
Not just any old church hall! St Nicholas Parish Church Hall in Saltdean Vale has been having a face-lift over the summer. Not only is it newly-decorated and renovated, it can also boast one of the biggest stages in the area. This was part of a ten-year renovation project that has kept local businesses busy over that period. This summer the stage lights were re-established, after a nine year absence. This attracted the interest of a professional theatre company and, in the summer, there were two performances of the popular play ‘Blood Brothers’ which won critical acclaim. The sound system has also been upgraded and now the venue is able to host live music events, as well as the usual quiz nights and parties. The venue has become popular for wedding receptions, dance classes and the local ballet school; and has, for many years, been the permanent venue for Saltdean pre-school. One of the hall committee members said: ‘This is one of the best-kept secrets around here: few people realise how lovely the hall is now. People who come to see a film at Cinema Saltdean, end up hiring the hall for their own events.’ The hall is the home of Cinema Saltdean, something that has become a firm favourite in the community: it shows the latest films, at a budget price and without the hassle of going in to
Brighton or the Marina. The friendly team of volunteers also serve refreshments during the interval. Bookings for the hall have soared since the refurbishment, which continues on in to 2013. ‘We benefit from everything being on one level here’, said a committee member. ‘We also have a fully-equipped kitchen, with convenient serving hatches to the main hall: it’s all very well designed, really. I’m looking forward to our Barn Dance, with a live band, on 3 November: it’s a chance to use all of the new equipment and lighting.’ Unusually, there is a gap in the bookings diary at the moment. The Wednesday at 5:00pm slot is free for a two-hour-plus booking but the committee imagines that this will not be available for long. Normal hire fee is just £15 per hour. If you are interested in booking the hall for your business, theatre or social events, please call the bookings secretary on 301558 to check availability.

Neighbourhood Watch Your monthly update from the Saltdean, Rottingdean & Ovingdean Neighbourwood watch.
SECURE ALL DOORS MAKE YOUR HOME YOUR CASTLE! If your front and back doors are not secure, neither is your home. ·Make sure the doors and frames are strong and in good condition. Doors should be at least 44mm thick. ·Fit front and back doors with five-lever mortise deadlocks - and make sure you use them! ·You could even fit bolts to the top and bottom of all outside doors. Remember to fit all security devices with strong screws or bolts. ·Patio doors should have special locks fitted to the top and bottom unless they already have a multi locking system. Get specialist advice before fitting locks to patio doors. ·If you're thinking of buying UVPC or metal framed windows or doors, make sure that they come with good built-in locks and a fitted chain. ·Before fitting locks to UPVC doors, check with the installer to make sure this will not affect your warranty. For extra protection you could consider installing the following: DOOR VIEWER - Look through this to identify callers before you open the door. LETTERBOXES - Never hang a spare key inside the letterbox. This is an obvious place that a thief will check. Consider fitting
a letterbox cage which prevents thieves from putting their hands through the letterbox and trying the latches from the inside. CHAINS - These help you to speak to strangers at the door without letting them in. Remember, if in doubt, keep them out. Buy a chain and use it every time you open the door. AUTOMATIC DEADLOCK -This locks automatically when the door is closed. MORTISE DEADLOCK - Fit a five lever mortise deadlock about a third of the way up the door. Most insurance companies are happy with one Kitemarked to at least BS3621. (new updated 2012 kitemark TS 007) You can only open a deadlock with a key, so a thief can't smash the nearby glass panel to open the door from the inside. If a thief gets into your home through a window, they can't carry your belongings out through the door. Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
AVOIDING WINTER COLDS AND FLU We all seem to be more susceptible to colds and flu in the winter months, yet if our immune systems are working well we should be able to fight the bugs and avoid being ill or at least limit the length and intensity the bug has on us. Both are viral infections so are not treatable with antibiotics. Research has suggested that several natural remedies can help the immune system fight viral infections. Many of these antiviral substances also have anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. VITAMINS AND MINERALS ● Vitamin B3 (Nicotinamide), B6 (P5P), B12 (Cobalamin), C and flavinoids in citrus fruits ● Vitamin D has a role in regulating the immune system ● Selenium A mixture of amino acids lysine, proline and Nacetyl-cysteine, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), selenium mineral and green tea extract was shown to inhibit influenza. ● A mixture of Vitamin A and beta carotene, some B's (particularly B12), E with minerals magnesium, selenium and zinc was as effective as pharmaceutical anti-viral drugs against bird flu ● A mixture of coenzyme Q10, selenium and amino acid methionine helped recurrent viral infections
● whole grains, including brown rice for B vitamins, meat or marmite for B12 ● Remedies that you many need in addition to a good diet ● Vitamin C in small regular doses or time release, D, selenium, zinc We are happy to advise you on your health matters. HERBS Since May 2011 herbal medicines are strictly regulated in UK. Many remedies manufactured before that date are still available. Only about 80 products are licensed for use in UK and some are available as foods. ● Astragalus, capryllic acid, Chinese herbs (many varieties), cordyceps militaris (mushroom variety), curcumin (tumeric), dandelion extract, echinacea, gardenia, licorice root (avoid in raised blood pressure) WHAT TO DO? ● Get outside in the fresh air and expose yourself to winter sunshine when you can ● Take regular gentle exercise ● Manage stress as it impacts negatively on the immune system ● Include anti-viral food in your diet: ● brazil nuts for selenium ● citrus fruits for vitamin C, nutrients are richest if picked when ripe ● carrots for beta carotene ● fruit and vegetables for zinc, though our soil is quite depleted ● garlic and onions, ginger, tumeric (commonly used in curries) ● green tea ● spirulina has a unique blend of nutrients that no single source can offer, including B vitamins, minerals, proteins, gamma-linolenic acid and the super anti-oxidants such as beta-carotene, vitamin E, trace elements and a number of unexplored bioactive compounds.
