Tunisia Tunisian boat sinks, killing scores of people Over 48 people drowned as their boat sunk near eastern Tunisia, with roughly 70 others being rescued by the coastguard. The boat was carrying around 180 people hailing from Tunisia and other African countries. Tunisian sea routes are becoming increasingly popular as a new route for migrants going toward Europe, and as a path to Sicily
often taken by Tunisians and other Africans in improvised boats. Around 660 people have died this year trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe. Earlier this week, nine refugees died in a separate incident off the coast of the Turkish province of Antalya.

Macedonia Residents protest over changes to country’s name Thousands of Macedonians protested the call to change Macedonia’s name to something other than the “Republic of Macedonia.” Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev has been in negotiations with Greece over the dispute of the country’s name as Greece has a province named Macedonia as well. This issue has prevented Macedonia from joining the European Union or NATO, as Greece has veto votes to both. To join the United Nations
in 1993 with Greece’s approval, Macedonia officially called itself “The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.” However, many countries continued to recognize “Macedonia” as the official name, thus leaving the issue unresolved. Many protesters were also angered at the poor economic situation that the country is facing and called for an early election.

United States American military command changes name The American military has changed the name of its Pacific Command to the US Indo-Pacific Command, highlighting India’s importance to the Department of Defence. The announcement was made by the US Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis during a ceremony where the leadership of the command was changed. Previous agreements between the US and India hint that the country may be trying to
develop stronger defence ties with India and to enter India’s defence industry in an attempt to counter China’s growing defense presence. The US is India’s second biggest supplier of military armaments. The Indo-Pacific Command runs US military activity in the Pacific region and has around 375,000 personnel working for it.

Pakistan Heatwave hits southern Pakistan The Pakistan Meteorological Department announced a new heatwave alert for Karachi, Pakistan, with temperatures expected to hit up to 44C. Karachi’s government has told its citizens to stay indoors and take caution when performing outdoor activities. Medical services have also advised citizens to be careful
during the heatwave, consuming plenty of water and avoiding exposure to direct sunlight. The heatwave arrives during the month of Ramadan, when Muslims fast during the daytime. In 2015, a heatwave killed over 1200 people in Pakistan.

WHAT GRINDS OUR GEARS? Dentists asking questions while they have their hands in our mouths
Look, dude, I don’t even really want to be here anyways. I just come here to feel bad about not flossing enough and then have you clean my teeth so that they don’t fall out of my head. You’re not even all that involved in my life. I don’t know why you care about how my schooling is going or if I have any hobbies. But more importantly, even if you do care, how am I supposed to answer you when you have your hands in my mouth? I can’t properly answer you without biting down and sending bloody finger chunks all over the room. If I do try to answer you without moving my lips and teeth, I just sound like a zombie who had a stroke. You can’t understand what I’m saying. Nobody can understand what I’m saying. Even if you ask me yes or no questions, I can’t nod or shake my head for fear of bumping your hand and giving myself an unnecessary root canal. I can take the chastisement over my brushing habits. I even enjoy getting that new toothbrush at the end of the appointment. But while you’ve got your hands in my mouth poking at my gums with Satan’s pitchfork, please, please, please let me suffer in silence.

Perhaps the greatest element of Deadpool 2 is the underlying message the crudehumoured film delivers.

Humour TR ANSL ATION GUIDE FOR COMMENTS ON YOUR PAPER Have you ever wondered what your 100-level prof really thought when they looked at your essay? Written by Winona Young
The season of returning essays is about to arise, and students will be filled with relief, confusion, and inevitable disappointment . . . but mostly just confusion in response to what their professors wrote on their essay. So, for this issue, The Peak staff is providing an exclusive feature to help SFU undergrads finally decode the intricacies of the labyrinthine critiques and comments professors have used as feedback on students’ essays. The Peak sat down with one of SFU’s professors, who will be unnamed to conceal their identity, and will be (because they very, very insistently told us they wanted to be) referred to as “DeepRaccoon.” The following are a series of translations provided by DeepRacoon.
Unsure what this means?: I have reread your sentence three times, and I sincerely think this was the moment when you fell asleep with Google Docs open on your computer.
Thesis needs a little bit of work: You didn’t write a thesis. You wrote a vague observation about this book, with information that I am 40% sure you acquired through reading the Sparknotes “About” page. Of course a book written by a postmodern philosopher shows important characteristics of postmodernism, like, no shit Sherlock! What other Hot Take™ are you going to take on next?
There’s a lot to unpack here: When we use this phrase, we actually mean to say “I don’t get paid enough to do this . . .” It can also double as what we in the academic field use as a professional way of saying "YIKES."
Reduce redundancies: I know you needed to reach the 1500-word minimum, but for the love of God, can you please not re-explain your thesis to me for the third time in this body paragraph? You know I have a wife? That I have kids to get home to? And the only thing between me and them is literally you and your half-baked, half-assed, assed-assed 400 words that you threw in to reach the word count, you stupid, smelly, SMELLY student.
Good example!: You took this directly from my slides, which proves you looked at them, I think. But this boosts my ego, so good on ya.
Lack of transitions: “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Lastly” are not enough to tie your body paragraphs together, even though I 100% used them in college too.
Excellent work: You did excellent work! Or did you? I may be sincere or be one deeply sarcastic sonofabitch here, you’ll never know ;)
