BC Black History: Peter Lester, first Black juror in BC
Happy Black History Month! For the month of February, The Peak is highlighting Black figures in history in the masthead every week.
Peter Lester (1858-1899) was a father, successful shoe store owner, abolitionist who taught Black folks about their rights, and the first Black juror in BC. Originally from Philadelphia in the US, he then moved to San Francisco with his wife and children to find out slavery was still practiced despite being outlawed. Discrimination was rife and his daughter was forced to drop out
of an all-white school due to a racist letter. Courts “did not allow testimony by African-Americans.” Lester “decided to join the exodus of African-Americans” to the Victoria settlement on the stolen land of lək̓ʷəŋən traditional territory. It was there where he became the first Black juror in the Vancouver Island colony, despite objections. Black folks were legally allowed to participate in juries 10 years later, on November 26, 1872.

The Peak is SFU's weekly student newspaper published every Monday, by students, for students. We’re funded by a student levy and governed by a Board of Directors. We reserve the right to edit submissions for length, as well as style, grammar, and legality. We also reserve the right to reprint submissions at any time, both in print and on web. We will not publish content that is sexist, racist, or otherwise prejudiced.
We acknowledge that The Peak’s office is located and our paper is produced, distributed, and read on the Unceded Coast Salish Territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), səlilwətaɬ (TsleilWaututh), Kwikwitlem (Coquitlam), Kwantlen, Katzie, Semiahmoo, and Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Peoples. Unceded means that this land was never surrendered, relinquished, or handed over in any way. We recognize that the unceded land that we occupy includes not only the SFU Burnaby campus, but extends to the land occupied by the Vancouver and Surrey campuses as well.
In last week’s issue in the Features article “Jewish history: a story of self reliance, determination, and strength,” we failed to print correct Hebrew spellings in the piece. This happened due to an error in InDesign which automatically pastes Hebrew text backwards. We should’ve paid better attention and care to ensuring that Hebrew spelling was accurate. We recognize how jarring reading this must have been for Jewish and Hebrew-speaking readers in a piece to commemorate Holocaust Day of Remembrance that details misrepresentation in the media. We apologize and remain committed to always checking other languages. This article was also not distributed in time for International Holocaust Day of Remembrance due to internal distribution delays. This issue features a reprint of the article.

If the university is able to do this to the largest team that they run [ . . . ] how much easier would [it be for] a smaller team to be taken off the university’s priority?

During the class, I searched up Scholars Edge. And then I saw all these reviews saying it was a scam, and a lot of people lost money.
At no point is there a situation where people lose money by doing Scholars Edge.

Housing and commercial real estate translate into high costs for all local goods and services which, in turn, makes life even less affordable.
