Will Canada fall prey to the anti-immigrant sentiment in the US or parts of Europe? I will sketch the many small victories that may shape how Canada treats its newcomers in the 21st century-- and moves beyond its “white” past.

A GENETIC PORTRAIT OF GENDER IN NORTH AMERICA
2 27 7 SO SOC S OC O CIAL CI C IAL DR. COLEMAN NYE, GSWS
Genetic science can tell us a lot about our biology, but can it also tell us about our society? In recent years, the BRCA genes, which are known to increase risk for breast and ovarian cancer, have been at the centre of public debates about health, gender, and economics in Canada and across the globe. From Angelina Jolie’s controversial decision to treat her genetic cancer risk through preventive surgeries to legal disputes over whether human genes can be owned by private companies, this talk explores the surprising things cancer genetics can tell us about gender in North America today.

PUBLIC REASON: BUILDING COMMUNITY BY THINKING CRITICALLY
DR. LISA SHAPIRO, PHILOSOPHY
Human beings reason. We are not like billiard balls on a pool table, simply caused to move by the forces that impact us. Reasoning, or thinking for oneself, is harder than it looks. We each have to learn how to think, and so we are taught to think by others. How then can we think for ourselves? Moreover, human beings reason publicly, that is, along with other humans. How is it that we are able to oth each think for ourselves and live together in a community? This talk will explore these questions and argue that we build a healthy community by each being able to both criticize the actions and beliefs of others and defend our own actions and beliefs in the light of criticism. Through this process of reasoning publicly we both articulate our shared committments, acknowledge differences, and respect one another.
Join us after for pizza and discussion! Open to all students and the general public.
