Test Taking Tips May marks the beginning of testing season. This is a strenuous time for all of us taking SAT, ACT, IB, AP, etc. tests. Thankfully, there are many tips and resources out there to make this month less stressful.
Prepare for Studying Get all of your studying materials out beforehand. This will keep you focused and not needing to take extra breaks to get up and look for materials.
Study Alone Although it’s a lot more fun to study with your friends, its also a lot easier to get off topic. Studying alone will keep you focused and in the zone.
Flash Cards Highlight important facts by writing them as questions and answers on different sides of index cards. Writing it out on the cards will help you retain the information, too!
Avoid Distractions The place you choose to study at can make a huge difference. Find somewhere quiet, comfortable, and free of as many distractions as possible (music, TV, phone, ect.).
Eat Healthy Eating healthy food while you study can help you stay focused. If you are feeling tired, eating a banana or apple will help out more than caffeine in the long run!
Narrow it Down It often seems like there is too much to remember when you are studying. Try to focus on the most important topics. Once you have those down, start looking at the smaller details. Test Yourself Once you have made flashcards, test yourself with them. If you want, get a parent, guardian, or friend to test you too. Don’t stop until you’re able to get through the whole deck without and mistakes! Study for the Whole Term Don’t wait until the last minute to study! You won’t be able to memorize a term’s worth of information in one night. Take time to review your notes and re-read important documents. This really helps you remember things on testing day.
Take Breaks Your brain can only take in so much information at a time. Set an timer for 45 minutes and take a fifteen minute break when it goes off. Make sure you get up and stretch a little and do something relaxing, like washing your face or going for a short walk. Get Enough Sleep You may be tempted to stay up and study, but your brain functions best with a full eight hours. The extra sleep is worth losing a little bit of study time. On Test Day… Write out a list of goals for the day and for the test (ex. I will eat breakfast, I will read through all of the questions carefully). Bring this with you and read through it before the test starts so you will keep your goals in mind. Make sure you eat a healthy and protein-rich breakfast and try not to stress!
