STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW
VOLUME 46
from the editor
1953 was a great year to build machines – and so is 2014
Every so often we receive an interesting phone call from a customer asking for assistance in supplying some parts for an old machine…well, how about a 1953 Peddinghaus 210/16 mechanical ironworker?
Lyle Menke And the Survey Says… In a recent issue of the SFR, I described the functions of my position as Chief Spiritual Officer of Peddinghaus Corporation. I was overwhelmed by the positive response from our readers – via email and in person. Many fabricators approached me at the recent NASCC Conference in Toronto as well as the FabTrol User’s Meeting in Eugene, OR to comment on the level of commitment that Peddinghaus maintains to our customers, our industry, and our employees. One of the main functions of the Chief Spiritual Officer is to contact every customer to conduct a survey upon completion of the system installation. We ask our customers to grade us on every aspect of the purchase – from the technical “preinstallation” package to the final training. The customer feedback is vital to Peddinghaus! We constantly seek to improve our systems and methods. Talking to fabricators before, during, and after the installation is fundamental – it is in the Peddinghaus DNA.
A customer, based in Califon, NJ inquired about “that part that makes it punch” for his old Peddinghaus machine. Our Parts team sent a parts manual of this vintage machine to them, and within 24 hours, the parts were identified. Oh yes, the 7 parts needed to rebuild the spotter handle assembly were all in stock and shipped the same day. A lot of manufacturers like to talk about parts and service being “readily available”. The proof is in the pudding, as the saying goes. Need parts? Got Peddinghaus?
First 12,000 Ton Project? No problem with Peddinghaus Traacsa knows what it takes to get the job done. They have been running Peddinghaus equipment since 2006, and recently invested for increased capacity in 2012. The result? Taking on a challenge of a 12,000 ton project with full confidence and anticipation, Traacsa completed this large project in record time with little issues. Confidence in their Peddinghaus equipment paid dividends when they made the quantum leap to a project of this size. Check out the article on page 8.
1953 was a very good year…

from the CEO I can’t believe that as I’m writing this article for the Steel Fab Review, it is snowing outside. Even for me, a German kid who grew up used to the long winters, this one was way too extreme. THANK YOU Winter 2014 brought weather that left roads snow packed and hazardous for almost two months, but our employees never failed to show up ready to work. The accumulation of snow in the Chicago/Bradley area set records this year. I have to tell you, there was one day in particular that I almost closed operation for the first time. On January 5th and 6th we were hit with over a foot of snow, record low temperatures, and blistering winds. That Monday, I swerved and plowed my way to work at 6 o’clock in the morning. When I made it to the company, I was so impressed to find all the sidewalks, entrances, and parking lots had been cleared and Peddinghaus was ready to go! I’m so proud to say that Peddinghaus has some of the most dedicated employees. They never let the inclement weather affect their ability to meet our customer expectations for service support or parts shipments.
NASCC 2014 Toronto As always, the annual NASCC show was a big success!! I was amazed at how many people made it to Toronto from all corners of the United States. I hope you all agree that the City of Toronto, even when cold, was a beautiful sight. The AISC organization, like always, did a wonderful job running the seminars and letting all of us manufacturers, software firms, fastener companies, and similar suppliers show off our products. Of course, our newly introduced MultMaster for the Advantage 2 and the HSFDB-C with beveling capabilities were both a huge success. If you missed the show, feel free to look up the technology on our wonderful website: www.peddinghaus.com.

and Nick Hajewski who did a wonderful job saving the day. In three days time, those gentlemen organized an event for 200 of our closest customers. We were privileged to have the opportunity to enjoy Lou Holtz and his down to earth advice on life. His show was followed by a delicious dinner. The evening concluded with a unique routine by the Topp Twins. These two ladies are Christchurch’s best comediennes; and now, we all know why! Keep your eyes peeled for the announcement of our 2015 NASCC Party. It will resume its’ place on Wednesday night next year in the “Music City” - Nashville, TN!
I can promise no “ifs”, “ands”, or “buts” about it! It will be a great evening for all.
NETWORKING EVENT It turns out that I’m not as strong-willed as I once thought I was. Since our traditional Wednesday night event was moved to Thursday this year, I thought it was a good year to take a break from our great networking events.
Our fiscal year ended March 31, and I would like to thank our employees, customers, and our business partners for another wonderful year. We know that we are not always perfect, but we strive daily to always do our very best. There are many options out there and I would like to thank you for choosing Peddinghaus.
But, I changed my mind on Monday, and decided it was important to take the opportunity to again spend time with our friends and industry partners. Oh yeah, the event would be on Thursday. Here, I would love to mention Lyle Menke

STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW
James Killelea & Co. Ltd. Continued from page 5
Although their first machines weren’t from Peddinghaus, their initial Peddinghaus investment taught them what it was like to be a part of the Peddinghaus family of fabricators. Since then they have continually returned to Peddinghaus for their automation needs. “Our first Peddinghaus machine was an FDB-600 in 1995. It was the first machine of its kind for small detail parts and we just couldn’t believe what the machine was capable of for its time. Over the 19 years we have had the machine it took every bit of punishment we Killelea’s latest investment, the HSFDB-2500/B, is capable of put it through and it still operates processing plate with scrap rates as low as 5% using edge start technology. every day in our shop.” stated Bob Killelea, managing director of the firm. Bob elaborates on why he chooses Peddinghaus over the competition time and time again, “The Peddinghaus machines can take the punishment we put it through. We punish our machines. We run them to the ‘nth’ degree and they don’t stop. We have had other types of machines from other providers, and they just can’t take the punishment.”
The BDL-1250/9D has tripled production at Killelea.
Strength and Speed Peddinghaus Continues to Offer This Powerful Combination Not ones to rest on their laurels, Killelea learned long ago that technology was a critical component to their success. This means gradually upgrading and improving
VOLUME 46 production over time to meet current standards for efficiency. Peddinghaus has continued to offer technology that has pushed automated production to the next level at Killelea. The production of small detailed components at Killelea has recently received a facelift as their FDB-600 and FDB-1500 were being tasked with higher volume and heavier plate part production. With projects creating the need to process thicker plate with larger hole sizes, the previous FDB-1500 struggled. By upgrading to an all new HSFDB-2500/B plate processor with an 8 station tool changer and powerful 36 kW / 48 HP spindle, Killelea can produce bigger parts than ever before with confidence that deadlines will not be an issue. When it comes to processing structural sections, Killelea re-arranged their facility to replace their existing BDL-1250/9B with an all new BDL-1250/9D carbide drilling line. Bob elaborates that this was due to the need for faster production, “These days I get bored watching my old drilling machine versus my new carbide drilling machine.

They are as different as ‘chalk and cheese’. I would have to say that the new drilling machine has absolutely tripled my capacity.” These latest advancements in technology allow Killelea to take on more work, and successfully compete in the UK’s aggressive steel fabrication marketplace.
Experience Says “Always Look Ahead” There is no secret to success, just common sense. Always invest, always improve, always re-evaluate and always be practical. The team at Killelea is an excellent example of what experience means to a fabricator working in today’s global marketplace. It’s the experience to know how to navigate production bottlenecks, and enhance technology. Beyond just technology, it’s the ability to identify quality business partners. Together, Killelea and Peddinghaus will continue to form a strong partnership for years to come.
A single pass process - the HSFDB-2500 uses rollerfeed measurement. This means plate can be staged one after another for continuous production.

STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW

Traacsa - Mexico City, Mexico
Fabrication by the Numbers What is structural fabrication? It is an artform, it is an important part of our global infrastructure and most of all it is a marketplace - filled with businesses all vying for their piece of the action. Many enter the marketplace as second or third generation family businesses; others enter it due to a long standing history and experience within the industry; but for a select few it is a well calculated business decision. Getting into the steel business is tough if it’s not already in your blood. Using sharp business intuition and a skill for crunching the numbers, Eduardo Haas and the team at Traacsa are writing their own story of success within the steel fabrication industry.
L to R: Miguel Valdes and Eduardo Haas of Traacsa
A “Top Down” Approach to Structural Steel Eduardo Haas, Managing Director of Traacsa, started his career as a business administrator. Proud owner of a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) certification, Eduardo traded his career as a financier for industrial manufacturing when he began a dealership selling an assortment of industrial roofing products. 28 years later, Traacsa - a premier structural steel fabricator near Mexico City, Mexico was born. Just as many miscellaneous fabricators or ornamental metal fabricators have evolved into structural steel fabricators, the scenario is similar at Traacsa. Patrons of Eduardo’s roofing products would ask if he could perform structural steel work for them. After years of turning these potential
structural steel patrons away, Eduardo decided to take an all new look at the structural steel industry. This new business unit allowed Traacsa to offer a more comprehensive package for the customers. By providing both roofing and structural steel products; customers received more value from their trusted business partner. Traacsa started small - performing structural steel modifications on site. In 1995 the firm invested in 100,000 square meters (approximately 3.2 million square feet) of property in order to expand the business. Simultaneously, they turned portions of this land that they were not using into an industrial park to generate additional sources of cash flow for the business. With both the roofing company and real estate firm generating revenues, it was time for the structural steel unit to do its part.
2014
Structural Steel A Place to Grow Eduardo had stated, “the structural steel sector of our business has had plenty of room to grow. From our initial projects which were quite small to the large projects we are capable of doing today. We are now doing bridges, malls, high rises, and more. We recently executed a job that was a 12,000 ton shopping mall in just 6 months. This is due to our Peddinghaus machinery.” Eduardo’s CFA background helps him assess the numbers behind a project. It’s about creating revenue; and the only way to do this is to reduce costs. Traacsa’s first investment in automation came from a European manufacturer. After a bad experience accessing parts and service, Eduardo and his team searched for an alternative. After speaking with industry experts from throughout the world, it became evident that Peddinghaus was a provider that not only offered technology, but also back up and support.
STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW

Having invested in Peddinghaus machinery initially in 2006, Eduardo has experienced the value of a Peddinghaus partnership, “Peddinghaus’ office in Monterrey is a great help when it comes to service and support. Having local technicians and assistance is very important when it comes to selecting machinery. Beyond service support, spare part availability is very important.” When Traacsa was looking at their future, it became obvious that new technology was needed to tackle bigger bids. Having been satisfied with their existing Peddinghaus machinery, Eduardo consulted his trusted advisors at Peddinghaus Latin America.
Stepping into Bigger Shoes Traacsa Now Competes on a Whole New Level By investing in the latest drilling technology, Traacsa has increased production to 500-600 tons of heavy structural steel in a single week. With this

new equipment, Traacsa has bid on bigger jobs, and successfully completed projects in excess of 12,000 tons in as little as 6 months. “The speed of our new drill line compared to our original one is 2 to 1. The majority of our structural steel is processed on this machine now. While we currently run 2.5 shifts for a big mall project we have taken on we are producing over 2,000 tons a month. The most we have processed was 2,400 tons in a single month. We could have not done this without our Peddinghaus machinery.” Using their latest machinery, Traacsa is quickly making a name for themselves within the Mexican steel fabrication community. Their keen insight for cost reduction and productivity are what will keep them on the leading edge of fabrication for many years to come.

ASN Industrial-Santa Luzia, Brazil
The Answer is Automated In 1998, ASN Industrial originated as a small consulting and manufacturing company consisting of a father and son team in Santa Luzia, Brazil. With an initial investment of ten thousand Brazilian Reals ($4,500 USD), Antonio Neto, President, and his son, Rafael Neto, Commercial Director, founded their business based on customers’ needs. ASN soon after welcomed Antonio’s other two sons, Frederico as the Production Engineer, and Guilherme as the Finance Director. Although the size of the company has changed, the ASN mission, vision,
L to R: Frederico Neto, Production Engineer; Antonio Neto, President; Rafael Neto, Commercial Director
and values have remained the same.
Growing Company for a Growing Demand
Today, ASN is a leading fabricator and
At their Santa Luzia location, ASN began investing in structural steel equipment in response to increased demand from their clients within the steel and mining industry. Standing out from their competitors, ASN found their niche not by developing a product to market, but by making specific designs according to their customers’ needs. “The client brings their requirements to us and we complete the work by what they need,” Rafael stated. “If it can be made out of steel, we’ll make it.”
erector of structural steel and industrial equipment throughout the South American region.
Operating in the civil construction industry, ASN projects include buildings, hotels, subway stations and what Rafael describes as “all construction involving steel.” After ASN’s first structural steel equipment purchase in 2003, Rafael and his family discovered that in order to accommodate their increasing workload, they needed to invest in automated equipment and technology.

Problems With Productivity
Pushing Past Previous Production Results
Needing a machine to drill and cut profiles, ASN began their search to add automation into their company. “We needed to take a step to increase our capacity using technology and stop doing things manually,” explained Raphael. Due to the rising economy in Brazil, ASN found that the timing was ideal for new investments.
With their new plate processor, ASN increased their capacity to an average of 400 tons per month which includes a combination of structural steel processing and boilers. Rafael estimates an average production of 1000 tons a month if ASN was dedicating solely to structural steel. “We aim for a mixture to achieve the best margins and results,” replied Rafael.
A Winning Combination ASN chose to expand their equipment inventory with Peddinghaus Corporation after extensive research in the structural steel market. ”Peddinghaus seemed more focused on product development and more focused on what the client needed,” said Rafael. “They were the most genuine, most straightforward, and concerned about achieving quality production results.” ASN made their first investment with Peddinghaus in 2006 and currently continue their journey with the international corporation. Beginning with a PCD-1100/3B drill line to replace their old punching system, ASN instantly saw results with their “highquality” drill that resulted in higher productivity. Following the instant success of their PCD-1100/3B drill line, ASN continued building their automated arsenal with Peddinghaus equipment. Currently, ASN houses two PCD1100/3B drill lines, two DG-1100 band saws, an Anglemaster 643, and their most recent investment: an HSFDB-2500/B plate processor.
Because of the high productivity of the HSFDB-2500/B plate processor, ASN will expand more into the commercial market for structural steel. “A year ago, I couldn’t have imagined that I would have achieved the productivity that I have today,” explained Rafael. “I wasn’t doing much work commercially, because I didn’t know we would have this productivity. Now I know…”
The Future for ASN The PCD-1100/3B drill line is just one of six automated advancements that ASN Industrial has invested in from Peddinghaus
With recent projects such as the Odebrecht Independence Subway Station in October 2013 in Los Teques, Venezuela, ASN’s major challenge was that they did not have a plate machine and experienced production difficulties. ASN is now able to take advantage of increased productivity with their new HSFDB-2500/B plate processor for future developments with Odebrecht and other major partners. “We’ve always understood the need for investing in equipment to provide a service. At ASN, we identify what needs to be done to improve and we invest in it,” said Rafael. “ASN wouldn’t be here today if not for the decision to invest in the automated equipment from Peddinghaus”
ASN is now able to take advantage of increased productivity due to their new HSFDB-2500/B plate processor

STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW
VOLUME 46
Part Marking for Plate How do you mark your plate parts? There are two major options on the market today - scribing or stamping. As one would imagine, the one best suited for each shop varies based upon the unique production requirements and efficiency needs of each individual facility.
Stamping vs. Scribing - What Works Best? The stamping versus scribing debate has long been waged. Here are a few things to think about when evaluating what is best for your shop:
STAMPING
SCRIBING
PROS
PROS
• Typically the fastest method for part marking or numbering
• Marking depth is adjustable - deeper marks allow for numbers to be visible through thick galvanizing or paint processes
• Capable of marking up to 36 different numbers and letters without the need to change stamp wheel characters • Marks as fast as 1 character per second • Stamping consumables are noteworthy for their low cost and longevity
CONS • Characters are limited to what can be contained as a stamp on the stamping wheel • Although marking depths are commonly visible after standard painting and galvanizing methods, they are not as adjustable as scribing
A Whole New SignoMat Stamping Unit for the HSFDB-C Although Peddinghaus has long offered carbide scribing and stamping on an array of machines, the latest HSFDB-C plate processor from Peddinghaus comes outfitted with a whole new concept for the world of part marking. The all new SignoMat design on the HSFDB-C not only offers the ability to quickly stamp part numbers on material, but also allows the stamping mechanism to rotate. This means that parts can be nested optimally in any orientation while still benefitting from the efficiencies that SignoMat part stamping offers.
• Shapes or characters are only limited to what is programmed in a part file - not limited by what is available in the stamping mechanism • Capable of marking clear and concise layout information for an array of operations beyond simple part marking
CONS • Typically slower than stamping - marks as fast as 1 character every 2 seconds • Carbide insert tips wear faster and cost more than stamp characters

DESIGN CONNECTIONS WITH SDS/2
SERIES BY SDS/2
TRUE CONNECTION DESIGN, NOT SIMPLY CONNECTION VERIFICATION SDS/2 is the only system that provides true connection design — for individual members, as well as all interacting members in a structural joint.
COMPLETE CONNECTION DESIGN REPORTS FULL JOINT ANALYSIS Instead of choosing a connection from a library, SDS/2 designs the connection for you, based on parameters that you establish at the beginning of a project. All connections SDS/2 automatically designs will comply with the connection design code standards the user chooses.
LEARN MORE Want to see how simple it really is to design connections in SDS/2? Scan the QR code to watch SDS/2’s connection design in action.
SDS/2 provides long-hand calculations of all designed connections, which simplifies the verification process. Scan the QR code to view an example of SDS/2’s automatically generated calculation design reports.
CLASH PREVENTION SDS/2 checks for interaction with other connections within a common joint. That means adjusting connections for shared bolts, checking driving clearances for bolts, sharing, adjusting and moving gusset and shear plates when required, and assuring erectablity of all members. All adjusted connections are automatically verified based on selected design criteria.

STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW
Getting To Know…
Paul Muraski
Regional Manager Paul, how long have you been working with Peddinghaus Corporation? I began with Peddinghaus eight years ago as a Regional Manager and have proudly held this position to date. Peddinghaus is the third company I’ve worked for in my life and I am happy to be a part of such a respectable corporation. I previously worked for a machine tool company since 1979. It was there that I gained experience as a field service engineer. I then ventured into product support, engineering and finally made my way into sales. I became an international sales manager covering outside of the United States and worked from locations in Canada, Mexico, Italy, and Hong Kong to name a few. My employment with Peddinghaus gave me the opportunity to continue and thrive with my experience in customer support. I was able to take my international experience and apply it domestically. I’m proud to say that I’ve been to all 50 states in the U.S., every state in Mexico, all the provinces in Canada, almost every country in Europe and all continents except two. Describe to our readers your role as a Regional Manager? I travel Monday through Friday throughout my Midwestern United States territory. I am responsible for overseeing an area that includes Ohio to Colorado, the Canadian border to Arkansas and every state in between; there are a total of fourteen. I communicate daily with five dealers and thirty-six dealer salesmen making sure that they know the ins and outs of the Peddinghaus technology. The more our representatives know about our machines, the more they can help find fabricators the perfect solution for their firms. My day involves visiting three to four shops daily. I have learned from my extensive background in traveling that in order to better serve and assist our customers, it is always best to utilize a handson approach. I take the time to tour their plants, look at their current inventory and listen to their concerns and challenges. I identify the areas where I can see potential for improvement and help find solutions to their productivity problems. I work with the team in Bradley, Illinois, in getting the customer a shop layout and a quote for their requests. I act as more of consultant in helping find the best fit for each fabricator; the machines sell themselves. What is your favorite part of being a Regional Manager? Without question, meeting all of the Peddinghaus customers and having the opportunity to see how they do business. I’ve been in customer support for my entire career. It’s not a position that you can successfully accomplish from behind a desk. I take interest in meeting and connecting with each business that I work with: their history, how they’ve grown in past, their future goals and how they would like to advance to the next level. It’s my job to help them reach their full potential through every step of the process. The communication from beginning to end is extremely important as a Regional Manager. Here is the format that I follow to assist with fabricators:
VOLUME 46
BEFORE: I make sure that I understand their business’s needs/goals DURING: I verify that all participants are well-informed and on the same page AFTER: I continue to make sure that productivity is running smoothly/customers are happy with their purchase What are your goals as a Regional Manager? There are two things that make a good RM: one being you have to be a good listener and two, being a good teacher. Being a good listener is an important part of the communication process. I listen to our customers’ issues and ambitions. This way I can entirely understand what it is they want, what they need and what the best option is for their firm. By being a good teacher, I am able to pass on educational tools to our dealer network using my industry experience and knowledge. I make it my personal goal to try and help every Peddinghaus customer reach their business needs. I want to help them obtain ultimate success by advancing their technology and becoming more profitable as a result. Every year I work harder than the year before and in return, our customers are continuously more satisfied with the level of assistance they receive. If the customers are happy with our machines, then I am happy. How would you say Peddinghaus technology has evolved? Since my arrival with the company, we have advanced our technology tremendously. From introducing seven new machines at Oktoberfest in 2008, to the PeddiWriter and to the more recent HSFDB-C plate processor. We are always trying to improve the profitability of our customers and anticipating their needs with the changing times. The future of Peddinghaus is never too far away with new and innovative equipment for all size fabricators. What would you like our SFR readers to know about Peddinghaus? It’s a known fact that customer support can only sell the very first machine. It’s our customer service and the people behind Peddinghaus that sell the second, the third and so on. I may be the initial contact and develop business relationships with our customers, but following our interaction, it’s the Peddinghaus team. They make my job easier and there’s a reason why our customers are repeat customers. We all work together making sure that fabricators get the absolute best with Peddinghaus. Our company is about quality and that’s what our customers deserve. What do you feel makes Peddinghaus stand out from its competitors? Hands down, the people at Peddinghaus make the difference. I’ve worked at Peddinghaus for eight years, and for eight years I’ve had a smile on my face. We have a customer service group unlike any one else in our industry. Our staff will go above and beyond for the Peddinghaus customers making sure that they are satisfied throughout their entire experience. You just don’t see that type of service anymore. I am proud to be part of the Peddinghaus team!
