International Trade Show Participation
Where in the World is Peddinghaus? From Lima, Peru to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania… from Hannover, Germany to Chicago, IL… From Sao Paulo Brazil to Lincoln, NE and Las Vegas, NV… Peddinghaus seems to be everywhere!!! Why? Because Peddinghaus is here to serve and support the structural steel and heavy plate fabrication industries worldwide — a requirement if you are to be considered a good business partner from one end of the globe to the other.
Peddinghaus participates in trade shows and conferences throughout the world. Maquinegocios (Peru), NASCC (USA), Austech (Australia), EMO (Germany), FabTech (Chicago) are only a few of the international venues where Peddinghaus displays technologies to eager attendees.
Russia, Turkey, and USA in this Issue As you review this SFR issue, be cognizant that the scope of today’s fabrication and construction world is indeed changing. Don’t be concerned – but embrace the opportunities change offers. In these pages, you will read about Doralp, the premier fabricator in Turkey, using today’s technology to construct new industrial and commercial projects in the Mediterranean, Asian, and Eastern European markets. Istanbul has been a center of commerce for decades – and the tradition continues. Read about Lenmontag in St. Petersburg, Russia. They use today’s software with Peddinghaus machinery to propel themselves to a position as a leader for steel construction in this region. Wisconsin Structural shifted gears from building fabrication to bridge fabrication with Peddinghaus equipment – and never missed a beat. Don’t be left on the sidelines!
This marks the 6th consecutive year that Peddinghaus has received this award of distinction for the sales of Hypertherm Plasma Systems. These units – especially the HPR 260 – are employed on Peddinghaus CNC plate processing systems such as the HSFDB 2500, FDB 2500, and FPB 1800.
Think Outside the Box for Welding & Fab Work How should a structural or heavy plate fabricator react when that one good job is finished up, and there are no major projects on the horizon? That is a good time to think outside of the steel construction box – think about industries that are similar, and that are thriving. Look at manufacturing – many agricultural manufacturing firms can’t hire enough quality or certified welders to meet their production demands. What are these firms doing? They are seeking outside vendors to help meet their demand for fabricated weldments. It’s happening in the Midwest USA, and is spreading to other parts of the world. If you are a structural fabricator, look to your welding staff as a source of revenue… You may be surprised! Be flexible and diversify! Watch for details in the September Peddi-TV release.

FROM THE CEO
Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. I love the crisp air that signals the change of season. Vacations are over, the kids are back in school, and new business challenges are everyone’s top priority.
NASCC – Placing our “Mark” in Pittsburgh The NASCC Conference in Pittsburgh yielded another milestone year for Peddinghaus Corporation. We certainly left our “mark” on the attendees with the introduction of new “game changing” technology that will benefit shop practices in our industry for years to come.
Anton Peddinghaus The new PeddiWriter™ CNC plasma arc writing machine takes all the labor costs – and inaccuracies – out of shop layout and detail work. The many fabricators who witnessed this marvelous machine in Pittsburgh were amazed at its speed, legibility, and accuracy. Now all detail functions will be processed in one pass in your shop production line – via a simple DSTV file from your building model.
NASCC – Industry Experts Reveal Insight At Peddinghaus Networking Event, three industry experts, (both a large and small fabricator & a service center) addressed the hundreds of attendees with some simple words of advice:
Rich Connelly, Cives Steel, Roswell, GA Four major points to consider for success in our industry: 1. Maintain slow, steady growth 2. Always embrace new technology 3. Don’t be a “kid in a candy store” 4. Cash is king
Jim Collins, Metals USA, Langhorne, PA Never panic – as everything runs in cycles: 1. Construction Cycles (based on AISC data) 2. Economic Cycles 3. Business Cycles 4. Look for market improvement and seize the opportunities
Dennis McCartney, B & B Welding, Baltimore, MD Tip for operating a family structural fabrication business: 1. Always embrace new technology 2. Technology has changed every phase of our daily lives: desktops to Ipads 3. Be ready to change/diversify your company as business conditions dictate
These “Men of Steel” gathered in the Steel City of Pittsburgh a couple of months after the NASCC to witness a Steeler’s NFL game at beautiful Heinz Field. The common theme is Orange – from the Peddinghaus logo to the Steeler’s Terrible Towel to the Orange in the Steel trademark – “mettle” tempered by flame. Al Wilson and Dave Sipple of Sipple Steel welcomed the father/son duo of Anton and Henry Peddinghaus along with Steve and Sean Farrow.

It is broadcast in a lively web based video format that communicates today’s industry information in a fast “news style” format. Our goal is to educate and inform, and to meet this objective, you will hear from every leading participant in our industry. From detailing and MRP software to global industry associations; from structural steel fabricators to steel service centers; from the best shop practices to tips on today’s market strategies… Peddi-TV® will cover it for you. Our latest Peddi-TV installment was recently posted this September – watch for it, as we highlight Hypertherm technology, methods to grow your business, and a look at industry detailing and production software. ®
Business 101: Invest in Your Company (Like We Do) You know me; my glass is always half full as I am always optimistic on our industry and our future. As I write this in early-September, the economy is again a major topic as the media is reporting on stock market uncertainty, debt limit issues, and international economic struggles. I agree with the thoughts of today’s business and industry leaders that now is the time for a conservative business approach and invest in your own company. For example, at Peddinghaus, we have invested in a totally new VOIP telephone system that is technologically advanced to provide data that improves our customer service support while providing data usage that helps run our business better.
Peddinghaus builds quality into every step of the manufacturing process, and will continue to do so using new investments in metrology automation.
Peddinghaus has also invested in a new coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for the Quality Control department in our Machine Shop. Why make this six figure investment? This CNC measuring device provides supremely accurate CNC controlled measurements – thus assuring that every machined part built for our Peddinghaus machines are precise, high tolerance and repeatable. We take the term “craftsmanship” very seriously at Peddinghaus. This conservative approach helps prepare Peddinghaus Corp for the future; while also maintaining our current business methods and R & D strategies. You may experience a down-scaled networking event at upcoming trade shows from us, but you will continue to experience new machine and software technologies from our Engineering Staff. We have a busy Autumn show season coming up, so I look forward to seeing you at EMO in Hannover (Sept 19 – 24); SteelDay in Bradley (Sept 23); or FabTech in Chicago (Nov 14 – 17). We have new machines and technologies to help you invest in your future!

LEJEUNE STEEL CO.
Textbook Bridge Fabrication LeJeune Steel Bridge Receives High Honors at the University of Minnesota In today’s marketplace the need to diversify is more apparent than ever. It’s no secret that office building, residential, and general commercial projects remain sluggish in the USA. For some this may be a cause for concern, but for others this is a sign to explore more vibrant realms within the steel fabrication marketplace. According to Reuters news agency, as of March 2011, 69,000 bridges in the USA were in the need of maintenance or replacement. Exhibiting the tools and the talent to go where some other fabricators do not, LeJeune Steel Co. of Minneapolis, MN specializes in these projects using their Peddinghaus equipment. Together with their heavy fabrication division, Wisconsin Structural Steel, LeJeune is a prime example of what modern technology and traditional craftsmanship can do in today's economy.
Brad Fox, Plant Manager (right) and John Peterson, Detail Manager (left) use their Peddinghaus equipment for a wide array of bridge, and heavy structural fabrication projects.
THE PROJECT — A Golden Opportunity at the University of Minnesota The University of Minnesota’s student population of 52,000 is only rivaled by the throngs of Golden Gopher sports fans who frequent the campus throughout the academic year. Responding to the need for quality public transportation, the University of Minnesota called upon local agencies to introduce a new light rail train system. In order to traverse the mighty Mississippi River, this system is being incorporated into one of the university’s most recognizable landmarks – the Washington Avenue Bridge. To enable this nearly 50 year old bridge to support the 106,000 lb / 48,000 kg trains that the light rail system will employ, LeJeune Steel Company accepted the challenge to modify the bridge’s fracture critical design. The bridge enhancement spans just less than one quarter of a mile (1,130 ft / 345 meters), and demands 240 heavy steel sections at 25' /8 meter and 50' /15 meter long increments to properly support the weight of the new train system.
THE FABRICATION — Wisconsin Structural Steel Steps Up to the Plate Roughly 2 hours outside of Minneapolis, in the forests of Barronett, WI Brad Fox, Plant
The Washington Avenue Bridge spans the Mighty Mississippi, and unites two parts of Minnesota's famed Golden Gopher campus.
Manager of Wisconsin Structural Steel, and his team operate one of the most sophisticated fabrication shops in the upper Midwest. With a resume that includes the Minnesota Twins Ballpark, and the Golden Gophers Football Stadium it's easy to see how much Wisconsin Structural Steel contributes to LeJeune’s 40,000 ton overall annual production. To process the heavy sections for this bridge, Brad and his team rely on their Peddinghaus equipment. Each of the 16,000 lb/7,250 kg box sections for the bridge were processed on the powerful BDL-1250/9B drill line. The BDL-1250/9B, in tandem with DGP-1270 prove to be a powerful combination, especially when accuracy is a major concern.
“Our Peddinghaus equipment has been very accurate. The box sections for the bridge in Minnesota are expensive to produce, so any error would cause a major cost issue. So far the machine has consistently drilled well within tolerances,” stated Brad. “Here at Wisconsin Structural Steel we like to do things right the first time, and we are able to do that with the Peddinghaus machines that we have.”
Each of these heavy box sections and splice plates were processed on Peddinghaus equipment, without a single error.

FROM FABRICATION TO FIT-UP — LeJeune’s Minneapolis Plant Puts Parts to the Test
All material is stored outside even in the diverse Wisconsin elements at Wisconsin Structural Steel.
A critical part of the bridge fabrication process, the FPDB plate processor from Peddinghaus proves to be a powerful tool for parts requiring high accuracy, and rapid production times. High speed carbide drilling combined with the carbide marking capabilities of this workhorse provide superior production, without sacrificing quality or material handling efficiencies. “With our FPDB we are able to drill 1-1/16" / 27 mm holes through 1-1/2" / 38 mm thick plate in only twelve seconds. This helps us Stacks of fabricated steel, ready for delivery, are a common sight at Wisconsin Structural Steel.
LeJeune’s Minneapolis plant is key to final fit-up and quality control. The large box sections processed on the BDL-1250/9B drill line and the plate components processed using the FPDB are assembled on the floor in Minneapolis to receive final approval before being sent into the field. “You will see multiple bridges at any given point in time at our Minneapolis plant. We currently have 5 bridges in the shop including the Washington Avenue Bridge. Our most common bridges are rail bridges but we also have capacity to capture a variety of other projects,” stated Matt Rovnak, Business Manager. “The box sections processed at our Wisconsin plant on the Peddinghaus drill are proven for accuracy right here. So far every part from our Peddinghaus machines has been right on the money!” Bridge parts processed on the FPDB prove perfect at final assembly.

AUTUMN 2011
LENMONTAG LTD
From Buildings to Bridges… Leading the Russian Steel Fab Lenmontag LTD, a steel construction and bridge fabrication company in St. Petersburg, Russia, in recent years has become an industry leader in the Russia’s North West region. Breaking into the industrial construction industry in 1991, Lenmontag began as a small set-up, producing basic construction elements. The purchase of four Peddinghaus machines allowed Lenmontag to thrive and in 2009 the company grew substantially.
From buildings to bridges, Lenmontag does it all.
Since 2009, Lenmontag expanded their service offerings to include bridge fabrication. Today 50% of the business is comprised of bridge fabrication, and 50% is traditional industrial construction. “Peddinghaus equipment is perfect for bridge fabrication,” Dmitry Markovich, First Deputy General Director said. “I produce very accurate parts on Peddinghaus equipment that is unmatched by any other machine. Without Peddinghaus, we would not be able to fabricate bridge parts, because of strict accuracy regulations.”
Educated Buyers Choose Peddinghaus In 2008, Lenmontag was quickly growing into the market leader it is today. An increasing need for newer, faster, and more accurate machines became urgent. Lenmontag Director, Andrei Golubov, visited many facilities with equipment already installed. Understanding the intense production cycles these machines are required to perform, he evaluated machines for accuracy, rigidity, and also service plan offered, should the machine ever require maintenance. Not only did Peddinghaus equipment prove to withstand the harshest conditions, but local Peddinghaus certified service technicians are readily available to customers in Russia. In addition, the purchase of Peddinghaus machines was made easier with exchange rates at an all time low. The Peddinghaus equipment came at a lower cost, without sacrificing the accuracy and quality of the machine. “One of the main reasons we decided to purchase Peddinghaus over other brands, was because VI-MENS [Peddinghaus' regional representative] offers manufacturer certified service technicians right here in Russia,” Markovich said. “Other companies usually fly someone in internationally, which could take days or weeks. With VI-MENS and Peddinghaus, I can have someone in my shop, looking at my machine, the same day or the next day after I call. The availability of machine service is invaluable to me; every hour my machine is down is money I am losing.”
Roland Jones-Peddinghaus Regional Manager, Dmitry Markovich-Lenmontag First Deputy General Director, and Alexey Trifonov-VI-MENS Chief of Metal Constructions.
What Lenmontag Has Under the Roof Upon the decision to choose Peddinghaus, Lenmontag purchased four Peddinghaus machines: 1270 DGP Band Saw with AccuMeasure system, BDL-1250/9B beam drill, FDB-2500 plate drill, and the ABCM-1250 coper. Among these machines, two stand out as the most productive and cost effective machines for Lenmontag. The FDB-2500 plate machine offers unmatched efficiency and accuracy. Running an average of 200 tons per month, Lenmontag has significantly reduced costs on labor and material since the purchase of this machine.
The DGP-1270 band saw and BDL-1250 drill line are a powerful combination for Lenmontag.
The BDL-1250 proves superior on a wide array of profiles.
“Nothing can compare to it,” Markovich said. “I am able to produce a whole part from beginning to end in a few short minutes. The Plasma torch gives me clean results, and it is much quicker. ” The ABCM Oxy-fuel coper is a versatile machine used on several “special application” projects. Lenmontag uses the ABCM to produce standard block copes, weld preparation, and much more. “We use the ABCM for special applications; it is the most cost effective machine I have,” Markovich said. “It has been great for all of the bridge work we do.”

rication Industry
The ABCM coping machine provides superior cost savings on specialty projects.
Quality Machines = Quality Fabrication Peddinghaus machines provide a significant competitive advantage to consumers. Not only do they process more material in less time (saving money), but the accuracy and quality of parts produced on the machines is significantly higher than competitors. The Peddinghaus machines have assisted Lenmontag with their rise to the top. “Quality wins all,” Markovich said. “Our competitors do not have machines with the new technology needed in today’s market. Peddinghaus’ innovative technology helped our business thrive. Not only do we offer our customers parts produced with cutting edge machines, but we also offer the highest quality fabricated product on the market.”
A Solid Future Ahead The future of Lenmontag looks bright, as business is booming. As a result of the high volume of fabrication projects, Lenmontag has recently begun to expand the facility again. “With the increasing demand for bridge fabrication, we have had to add an additional 15,000 square meters to our facility, to be completed in autumn,” Markovich said. “With the addition, we have had to change the layout of our machines to accommodate more bridge work. The Peddinghaus machines are flexible; due to the modular design, the machines can easily be rearranged, allowing for easy integration into the new layout. Our Peddinghaus machines are essential to our future success.”

THE RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB
Steel Services Uses Peddinghaus Tool Division Equipment to
Dave Skiles, Plant Manager of Steel Services (at control panel in center), and his team rely on Peddinghaus tool division equipment to compete in today's complex marketplace.
With an appetite for big projects, the team at Steel Services (Indianapolis, IN - USA) proves that small shops can still achieve high quality, fast lead times, and high tonnages with the right selection of equipment. Using limited CNC, Steel Services meets customer expectations with the help of their Peddinghaus Ironworkers, Band Saws, and other Tool Division shop solutions. Capable of achieving high tonnages each month with just 9 shop employees, Steel Services proves that old fashioned hard work, skill never goes out of style.
Ground Floor Shop Design: A Little Bit of Experience and Know How Goes a Long Way When Dave Skiles (Plant Manager) was tasked with designing Steel Services' very first fabrication facility, he applied his connections and experiences to the endeavor. Originally an organization that focused on sourcing outside vendors to process structural steel, Steel Services took control of their destiny with a plan to reduce costs, improve quality, and most importantly reduce lead times by establishing their own plant. “I had the opportunity to build everything from the ground up, from the workforce to the equipment. I wanted to make sure we built quality into everything that we did. Being the best means using the best equipment. That’s why we use Peddinghaus,” stated Dave.

When Cost Cutting is a Concern Speed is the Name of the Game
When it came time to select equipment, all of the traditional ironworker and band saw players were involved. There are many to choose from, each with their own attributes. With quality and efficiency as a major concern, Peddinghaus came to mind.
Warehouse work is a major component of Steel Services’ production. With a staff of only 9 shop employees Steel Services is capable of processing high tonnages of fabricated steel each month. It’s easy to see how their name within the local market has become associated with fast service and high quality fabrication. This is a facility that has a “no cutting corners” approach to every step of the fabrication process.
angles is required. If measurement is a concern the unique bundle clamp and measurement device serves 2 purposes. It not only allows the operator to cut multiple profiles simultaneously, but also eliminates the need to manually traverse and measure material between each and every cut while reducing material waste.
“I remember when I had mentioned Peddinghaus to my colleagues I instantly had their attention,” Dave recalled. “The name is synonymous with quality, and the bigger machines that they traditionally provide. We were in the market for a different kind of machine when it came to ironworkers and shop saws, but the options were there and we were impressed with what we had seen.” Two Peddinghaus shop saws, a Peddinghaus Ironworker with automatic length stop, and Peddinghaus pipe Notcher now call Steel Services home. Their ease of use, quality, rugged construction, and readily available customer service make a winning combination for the team in Indy. In addition to these characteristics the machines were competitively priced making Dave’s decision much easier.
“I know from a past experience how band saw operators would struggle with the old versions of vertical miter saws,” Stated Dave. “Although it was great technology for the time, the operator would end up fighting with the saw all day more than anything. Everything was labor intensive from laying the saw over manually to the measurement. This really took a toll on your speed, production, and more than anything it wore out the operator.” With the Peddinghaus 410 and 320 band saws, mitering is achieved with ease. Using full automation on the 410 saw, this expedites production when consistent mitering at different
“I know that there are situations where we are able to cut bundles of angle using the bundle clamp. This essentially maximizes our cutting capacity. This was not an option before with our older saws,” stated Dave.
Top Tier Fabricators Use Top Notch Equipment “I like to think that we have a great team here at Steel Services, and that is half the battle in this business. High quality equipment is just another factor. I hope that when people look at what we do they see the pride we take in our work. With our Peddinghaus machines, we are well equipped to tackle any challenge that presents itself.” - Dave Skiles

STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW
AUTUMN 2011
FABRICATION SHOP SYNERGY:
It’s How Fabricators Make Money Today Fabrication Synergy: A structural fabrication shop production layout that achieves the following: 1. Maximum tonnage output 2. Integrates all equipment into seamless throughput 3. Total software integration 4. Minimizes crane handling 5. Decreases labor costs The market is challenging, but the overall business outlook is bright - and by making a prudent machine tool investment, you can enhance your productivity and save man hours per ton on your next job. Sounds fairly simple, right? Wrong. One of the biggest decisions a structural fabricator will ever make is the selection of proper equipment for his fabrication shop. We encourage you to read the articles in this publication (and past issues) about diverse fabricators serving various steel construction markets. Though diverse, each fabricator used Peddinghaus’ expertise in providing a modern, efficient production system for their specific shop facility.
Peddinghaus' team of production experts have years of experience helping fabricators achieve their goals.
Innovative material handling proves to be an important part of how profits are earned in modern fabrication facilities, such as this one in South Africa.
Tap An Invaluable Resource: Peddinghaus Production Specialists Peddinghaus employs three systems engineers, with a sole responsibility of designing a material handling flow and through-put system to maximize your tonnage/production potential. STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW
AUTUMN 2011
FABRICATION SHOP SYNERGY Continued from page 18
Why store material inside? Less space under roof means lower overhead costs, and higher profits.
Design the Modular Way – One Step at a Time Peddinghaus’ patented modular design of CNC Machinery, accompanied by roller module conveyors and lift/carry cross transfers, make it easy to grow into the future.
Load outside in your yard – with fork trucks or one dedicated bridge crane – it is fast, safe, and productive.
Crane Use Drains Money From Your Shop Operations
Our engineers can examine your layout, and “start small”. Peddinghaus’ modular design, coupled with rugged construction, mean the conveyor modules can be used in multiple methods in your shop. The modular design pertains to machines as well, which can be relocated or exchanged as your business grows.
You are the manager. Have you ever spent an afternoon in your shop watching your employees move material with a crane?
A minimal investment now lays the foundation for future expansion – at your rate of comfortable development – based upon your business plan.
Watch the other workers in the bay, welders, etc… they stop welding and watch the crane movement creating a “spectator sport”.
Save Shop Space – Bigger Isn’t Always Better In this competitive age, what are areas to examine to improve shop efficiency? Don’t invest in a huge building when a small “garage” or “shed” will do. Why pay property taxes and heat/maintain thousands of square feet under roof – when only a few hundred are needed?
Many times cranes are shared, meaning multiple employees stop working waiting for the crane. Once they have use, it takes them 5 minutes to adjust the chains; then they lift the section.
Productive? NO. Expensive? YES. Does your project make money with this practice? NO. Answer: An effective modular conveyor/cross transfer system throughout your shop!
Skilled Labor is Disappearing – CNC Equipment Works 24/7 Ask anyone in the metal working industry – not
just structural fabrication – and the answer is the same, “I can’t find competent people who want to work in my steel shop”. Welders, fitters, inspectors, are tough positions to fill even in today’s job market. Everyone is affected – not just you – but fabricators on every continent face the same labor dilemma.
Today’s Shop Automation Saves You Money – Things to Think About The efficiency of CNC Equipment means less operating costs which saves you money in many areas: • Ever improving structural software streamline estimating, detailing, drawing releases, and shop production – this data can be downloaded directly into a Peddinghaus machine with no extra steps. • Because you can operate much more efficiently, your steel costs are more easily controlled, and your inventory is finally under control. • Automation means you control your own destiny; a late delivery from a vendor often means your fit-up and weld schedule is ruined, and now you must juggle your work timetable – costing you time and money. • By staging your production, you can run multiple jobs simultaneously – extending your balance sheet and line of credit – for more customers. A Peddinghaus investment works within your budget – and your business plan – to make significant improvements in your work flow. Again, don’t take our word for it – ask successful Peddinghaus customers – they’re our best advertisement. Get a free shop work flow analysis today by contacting 815. 937. 3800 or by e-mailing marketing@peddinghaus.com
Even plate can be easily fed through an exterior wall, as is the case at this Denver, CO - USA service center.
No gripper means material can be transferred from either side of conveyor, or completely across with ease.

STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW
AUTUMN 2011
THE PEDDIWRITER:
Capturing the Attention of Steel Fabricators Throughout Exhibited live and under power for the first time, the PeddiWriter™ CNC layout marking machine ignited interest throughout the industry at the North American Steel Construction Conference (NASCC) last spring. The first machine of its kind, the PeddiWriter™ uses established plasma technology to offer groundbreaking layout efficiencies. A standalone solution to today’s costly layout and fit-up bottleneck, the PeddiWriter ™ is widely renowned as the world's most proven layout marking machine.
™
Two completely independent torches allow for simultaneous marking operations.
If You Missed it in Pittsburgh... Imagine a machine that can read connection data directly from a DSTV file, or straight from a Tekla BIM model, and automatically applies it to any section desired. Two automatic plasma marking torches rapidly apply marks in seconds. Independent axes of motion allow the machine to create completely unique characters or shapes on multiple surfaces with no stop in production. This game changing machine comes standard with the industry’s most precise form of roller measurement and can be integrated easily into an existing system. This isn’t fantasy, this is the PeddiWriter™, hands down the most established marking system on the market today.
Piece marks on one surface, layout marks on another, at the same time, with no stop in production.

STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW

the World
Even with both torches ignited, a smoke free operating environment is achieved with the PeddiWriter™.
Regardless of mill scale or corrosion, the PeddiWriter™ performs.
No matter the connection or the part, layout marking is expedited with this industry first.
Flawless Operation in Any Environment
Clear Designation When You Need It
Designed with the rugged environment of typical fab shops in mind, the PeddiWriter™ relies upon proven plasma technology to automate the processes of layout and fit-up. Hypertherm® ArcWriting torches are utilized to apply layout data directly to the profile in question. Similar to that of modern plasma cutting equipment, plasma marking is robust enough, yet precise enough for any structural application.
The technology of the PeddiWriter™ makes non-intrusive layout marks that are easily covered by painting or galvanizing processes. Typically layout marks for welded connections are only necessary before coating processes, and are undesirable afterwards. Not just for welding layout marks, the PeddiWriter™ can clearly designate manual cutting operations if an automated coping system is not available.
“One of the biggest advantages of the ArcWriter torch is that it's basically a low powered plasma system. Instead of cutting through the steel, it’s used to mark. It not only does this quickly and efficiently but it uses a power supply similar to a welding unit, which operates very well in dusty or dirty shop environments, “ stated Jim Colt, Application Technology Manager, Hypertherm Inc. “I think some of the advantages you would see over laser marking or carbide scribing type systems is the ease of use, the system is very easy to setup. Basically you turn the unit on, set the power, set the speed and you’re ready to mark. Once it's set up for marking all you need to do is push ‘go’.”
Low Amperage Plasma Means No Dust Extraction, and Minimized Operating Costs The ArcWriting torches of the PeddiWriter operate at nominal amperages to only score the surface of material, not cut parts. Completely visible through rust and scale, the machine does not require any sort of dust extraction or particulate collection system and is fully capable of operating using clean and dry shop air as an alternative to other marking gasses. Operators at the machine experience no visible smoke or haze as a result of the plasma marking, and there is
w w w. s t e e l f a b r e v i e w. c o m
no visible slag left as a remnant surrounding the mark. When compared to high definition plasma which cuts at amperages that range anywhere from 260 amps to 400 amps, the ArcWriter marks contently at just 5 amps. This can be adjusted to higher amperages providing greater marking depths as desired. The machine itself operates at 27 amps – far less than common drilling or cutting systems. This not only makes the machine a much faster marking machine than other designs, but more economical as well.
Versatile Enough To Mark Any Profile The PeddiWriter with its dual torch design and independently operating axes allows you to quickly and efficiently mark any structural steel profile on any side in seconds. From flats, beams and channels, to angles and hollow sections, the PeddiWriter will eliminate layout and fit-up bottlenecks with the efficiency and accuracy only a Peddinghaus machine can provide. STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW
AUTUMN 2011
GETTING TO KNOW…
Dr. Carl U. Peddinghaus Peddinghaus Corporation is a family owned company founded in 1903 in Gevelsberg, Germany by Mr. Paul F. Peddinghaus. His son, Paul C. Peddinghaus directed the firm until 1974, when Dr. Carl U. Peddinghaus (third generation) assumed CEO responsibilities for the company. Dedicated to building modern equipment for the structural steel and heavy plate fabrication industries, Peddinghaus grew by implementing the latest in scientific technologies. From electric motors in the 1920’s to early personal computer technology in the 1970’s, Peddinghaus is dedicated to developing new equipment which reflects state of the art engineering designs. Starting in 1974, Dr. C. U. Peddinghaus led the company through years of growth and success. He was an integral part of the development of Peddinghaus benchmark products for structural steel fabrication. Under his tenure new technologies as the CNC beam drill/saw lines, ABCM automated coping systems, and FDB/FPB plate processing systems were successfully introduced to an eager marketplace.
How it All Began Peddinghaus’ first products were drop-forged anvils and vises; later producing hand operated punching and sheering machines for the metal working industry. The hammer at the Peddinghaus forge left an impression on the young Dr. Peddinghaus.
Pictured above is the original Peddinghaus facility in Gevelsberg, Germany (circa 1912) and one of the earliest, and most popular product lines – anvils.
Peddinghaus products like the 210 series ironworkers, Caddy/Cadax bar shears, and similar products. These were sold through established distribution channels.
Since the advent of computer technology, Peddinghaus has always ridden the cutting edge of innovation.
Do It Yourself Technology Dr. Carl U. Peddinghaus is the third generation of Peddinghaus leadership who has shaped the global steel fabricating industry.
“I remember hearing the forging hammers when I was younger,” Dr. Peddinghaus said, “I knew that was the sound of manufacturing and progress.” True to the Peddinghaus family tradition, Dr. Peddinghaus literally started at the bottom of the corporate ladder – helping load/unload trucks – when he was 12 years old. From this humble beginning, Dr. Peddinghaus learned “hands on” within the company. He then went to the university where he served a business practicum before achieving his doctorate degree. At that time he assumed a leadership role in the company.
Dr. Peddinghaus (far right) is pictured here in a an early 1970's board meeting with his trusted business partners.
Under his guidance, Peddinghaus continued to flourish. The advent of the first drilling machines (known as the TDU) were such cutting edge technology for their time that PC programmers were not available to support their development. Dr. Peddinghaus used his software knowledge and expertise to actually design his own software programs to operate these machines. Dr. Peddinghaus said. “I went to customer’s shops and installed the programs for the machines myself; it was easier and less expensive to do it that way.”
U.S. Manufacturing Expansion North America had always been a good market for established
In 1976, Dr. Peddinghaus purchased a recognized machine tool manufacturing firm (Manco Mfg.) in Bradley, IL. He was looking to expand Peddinghaus sales and manufacturing in the vibrant North American market. “Costs associated with selling to the U.S. from a European location, made it difficult to be successful,” Dr. Peddinghaus said. “I chose the location in Bradley, because it was close to Chicago, near the airports, making it easily accessible for our customers. Also, the shop was already set-up with machine tools which we needed, because Manco had manufactured products similar to ours.” “Establishing Peddinghaus Corporation in the U.S. was my greatest accomplishment with the company.” Choosing to manufacture in the USA was indeed a prudent investment. In 1997, Peddinghaus expanded manufacturing to a new facility in Andrews, SC. Continued on page 30

Henry Peddinghaus (far left) is learning the company from the ground up, just as his grandfather (center), and father, Anton (far right) did before him.
Never afraid to seize opportunities, Dr. Peddinghaus was instrumental in the ground breaking of several Peddinghaus manufacturing locations such as the Andrews, South Carolina - USA plant.
The South Carolina facility is used for manufacturing of products ranging from CNC drill lines to coping systems to Anglemaster angle/flat processors to material handling systems. “We were doing so well in the U.S, we needed more space,” Dr. Peddinghaus said. “We couldn’t expand in Bradley, because we were “land locked” around the facility. We also needed something closer to a big harbor to better accommodate international customer shipments; the facility in Andrews was the perfect location.”
Innovating an Industry Peddinghaus has always been the leader in the steel fabrication machine market. However, more recently, the company has greatly dominated in innovation. Every year for the past 10 years, Peddinghaus
has developed a new machine or technology for the marketplace. “If you are not looking to the future and solving problems coming from the users of machines, then you will be out,” advises Dr. Peddinghaus. “Peddinghaus stays successful, because we always try to produce something new, which is needed for our customers to be competitive in the world market.” Dr. Peddinghaus attributes a lot of the success of the company to the employees who work for Peddinghaus. “The key to a successful business is to have good people with great ideas who continually innovate,” Dr. Peddinghaus explained. “Nobody can run a business by themselves and be successful.”
Time for The Fourth Generation The Fourth Generation of the Peddinghaus family assumed responsibility in 2003. Mr. Carl G. (Anton) Peddinghaus, and his sister, Ms. Julia C. (Cilla) Peddinghaus now direct the firm. Currently Anton serves as CEO of the company, while Cilla oversees the sales operations on the continent. Dr. Peddinghaus has high exceptions for the company now guided by his son and daughter.
Continuous innovation is a theme that Dr. Peddinghaus has instilled in Peddinghaus’ corporate culture. Peddinghaus is home to many industry firsts, such as the PeddiWriter™ layout marking machine pictured above.
All generations of the Peddinghaus family take great pride in providing superior customer service and client intuition.
Dr. Peddinghaus is still a true world traveler, pictured here in South Africa touring fabricators with his daughter Cilla, wife Helga, and son Anton.
Dr. Peddinghaus attributes the success of the company to the significant relationships kept with customers, and advocates that positive customer relations is key to future success. “You must have a feedback as to what the customer is doing with the machine and how they use it,” Dr. Peddinghaus said. “Customers offer suggestions as to how you can improve in the future.”
Life as a Semi-retired Executive As of today, Dr. Peddinghaus is a semi-retired Executive; meaning he
is still involved with the ‘big picture’ and the company’s overall success. From his experienced perspective, he can provide sound advice on many aspects of the firm’s operation. “The best part is you have nothing to do with the day-to-day business,” Dr. Peddinghaus said. “I garden to keep busy, but it [retirement] is nice because you have reduced stress, and you can explore other opportunities." “The worst part now is that I am no longer the boss…I am now bossed around by my wife,” Dr. Peddinghaus said with a laugh.
