In the November issue, I talked about the picture book The Giving Tree. I mentioned that I am a Tree, with a little boy (my son) and a little girl (my daughter) beneath me. A month later, these two kids have speedily transformed into two tiny “koalas”, day and night clinging to the Tree! In early October, my husband and I were hardhearted enough to leave our younger daughter with her grandma while we took our older son to Singapore on holiday. There were some side effects to the wonderful trip… Back at home, my little darling Chloe sticks to me like glue. Meanwhile, little Max just can’t let Mummy go to work after 5 full days of attention from his mother. I landed in Hong Kong, but I feel as though I am in Australia, what with the bear hugs from my “baby koalas”. I have to admit that I do enjoy this sweet kind of emotional attachment from my kids. Yet it comes with a little bit of pressure. The dilemma lies in the fact that every parent hopes their children would be independent, without relying too much on their parents. Although it might be a bit early to confront this issue when my kids are still so young, independence has to be nurtured at a young age. To be honest, I am far from good in this respect. I haven’t even succeeded in “letting your baby sleep on his own” which the local Family Health Service advocates. In this issue, world-renowned psychologist Dr. Louise Porter explains “resilience” in her behaviour article as “the ability to bounce back from adversity” (p.52). To enhance your child’s resilience, there are guidelines that parents should follow. We hope that this article can help you raise an independent child, as well as teach emotional control. Lastly, the 10th Classics For Kids Christmas Charity Concert (see advert on p.6-7) tickets are now on sale! This is our first time to collaborate with HK Ticketing to give you a more convenient ticketing experience. Limited seats, so act fast!!

What’s up

I used to be an elementary school teacher and now I am a full-time mum taking care of my son, Miles. The best parts about being a parent are watching our son achieve every single big and small developmental milestone, seeing the biggest grin on his face after a long hard day, and bonding with him through breastfeeding and reading story books. The most embarrassing thing our child did to me was pooping all over his back and on my pants when we were out at the mall once! I had no extra pair of pants at that moment! I was all alone! As a mother, you just wanted to make sure your child is happy and clean so I cleaned and changed him in the nursery first before we hopped on a taxi to go home. I bet the taxi driver found us EXTREMELY smelly! I learn this lesson by bringing an extra set of clothes for myself every time we go out just in case.

As a parent, what aspect do you think you could improve/ do better? I am learning to work with my husband as a parenting team. We both find it very important to let our son see us as a team and know that we both love him very much and want him to receive the best. Name a recent children’s book or movie/programme. Why is it rewarding? One of my favourite children’s books is Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. It describes an evolving, warm and loving relationship between a boy and his mother. My heart would ache and my eyes would tear up every time I read it.

To many parents, “child violence” is a heavy and serious subject, equivalent to criminal offense. When hearing about kids demonstrating behaviour such as beating, biting, yelling or snatching things, we tend to label them as little brats or “Kong Kids” in local dialogue to make light of the matter. But once the seeds of violence have been sown, it poses serious consequences to their development. In this feature we will share several “Child Violence Scenarios”. Some you may have encountered before, and some you may have disregarded and/or neglected. We hope you can take this journey in facing this situation together with us.

Wilson is an energetic toddler. He loves active play but is inclined towards having temper tantrums especially when he is with his parents and doesn’t get what he wants. Wilson will often hit his parents or his helper when he is having a temper tantrum and has recently begun to spit at them. Most of the time he does this when they are out of the house: at the grocery store or in the shopping mall. And his parents are often just too embarrassed to stop him, because they know that if they try to punish him he will have a temper tantrum. Wilson is learning that violence is an effective way to get what he wants. He is very likely to become a bully.

Any act of violence or aggression: grabbing toys, hitting, biting, pinching, spitting, pushing, punching, slapping and breaking things must be disciplined every time a parent, teacher or helper experiences it directly, witnesses it or even hears of it. Many people still believe that very young children will just “grow out of it” and stop acting aggressively when they get older. It is my experience that this is not true. As soon as a child is old enough to try to use violence and intimidation to get what they want, then they are also old enough to be disciplined for it. EVERY time a young child uses aggression to get what they want, they learn to do it again. It only takes a few times for it to become a habit. This means if they hit their parent just one time in the morning, then the same day hit their helper on the way to school, then go to school and hit another child, that is all that is needed to create a bully. Just one day of undisciplined aggression, that is all it takes.

即是說:如果他們在早上打父 on Aidan Mok, 2.5 yrs White Printed Cotton Tee HK$265 Gray Knitted Zipped Cardigan HK$495 Gray Nylon Sleeveless Vest HK$945 Dark Denim Jeans HK$495 All from Benetton

For a child less than 4 years, all that is needed to stop aggressive behaviour is a clear message. Gently but firmly take hold of the hand they hit you with, look them in the eye, and give them a firm and sharp “NO! No hitting is allowed”, then briefly withdraw your attention, just a few seconds will do. If you are carrying them, put them down and stand with your arms crossed. But keep the message clear, do not say “no” in a playful voice, do not hit them back, you must be firm and clear. You will see a strong reaction in them, most will cry or fuss, this shows they understand it was a bad behaviour, after 4-5 seconds return to normal attention and do not mention the aggression. If the aggression was towards another child then a short time-out, 1-2 minutes, as soon as you become aware of the behaviour is all that is needed. When they do it again repeat the same discipline, usually it will only take a few firm and clear responses for them to stop the behaviour.

Sophie is a quiet 2.5 year old girl, she already likes to look at books and engage in crafts and other kinds of quiet play. She is the oldest child with a baby brother just a few months old and everyone thinks that she is an angelic child. But, if you watch Sophie carefully, especially when she is at playgroup, you will see that Sophie doesn’t like to share. If another child takes a book that she likes, she will often quietly pinch the child or sometimes when no one is looking quickly bite him or her. Sophie has noticed that these quiet acts of violence usually go unnoticed and always go unpunished. Most adults simply think Sophie is just too sweet a girl to do anything like that. Sophie is learning that violence is an effective way to get what she wants. She is very likely to become a bully.

Young girls can be bullies too. They tend to bully in different ways than boys, in quieter and more interpersonal ways. They may pinch or sometimes bite, but they are still being bullies, physically forcing other children and adults to comply with what they want. Do not overlook a girls bullying or think of it as just a “stage” she will grow out of. She will not grow out of it; in fact it is likely to get much worse.

Jason is a very mature 3 years old, he is an only child and is accustomed to spending time with his older cousins and family friends. But he is always the youngest of his playmates and gets bullied by them often. They always tease him when he cries and call him a “baby”. He is challenged to do things that he is too young to do, climb as

high as the older boys, jump further and run faster. The older boys are also very rough with each other. Jason doesn’t want to seem like a baby, and so he is already learning to identify the weakest child in the group and bully them so that the older boys will respect him. He has already learned the most effective ways to make another boy back down, even how to make them cry. Jason is learning that violence is an effective way to win the acceptance of the older boys. He is very likely to become a bully.

It is a common misconception that a child is either bullied or is a bully. The truth is not that simple. Many parents already know that after their child has been bullied they often seek to bully other children, so as to not seem weak and as a way of venting their own anger and frustration at having been bullied. Bullying is like flu; it tends to spread from one child to another.

It is best to make sure that toddlers do not engage in too much rough play with older children. Make sure that if your child plays with another child who tends to be rough and your child starts to display the same habit, they are disciplined EVERY time you know they have tried to use aggression to get what they want. Children displaying acts of aggression in their early years are not too unusual. There are complications involved: instinct, past experience, poor parenting styles, social influences, and even genetics play a role. Through proper cultivation and discipline, parents can play an important role and prevent the situation from spiralling into serious and violent aggression.

Right Solution for the Right Situation Have those 3 stories told in the previous chapter triggered your memory about similar situations? This sort of behaviour, regardless of the extent of seriousness, is demonstrated by every child when they are young. Their acts usually stem from instinct in the beginning, or are learned from past experience in order to fulfil their gratification and needs. Parents should prevent their little ones from being labelled as “violent children” through appropriate discipline. Experts indicate that these acts of aggression are sparked by certain incidents and are due to lack of self-control. These acts are often situational, and they may occur again when similar scenarios arise.

Call him “courageous” or “violent”? Case 1: A 6-year old boy, Kit Kit, went to Hebei with his father. They discovered a traditional local game: fish-catching with a spear. Kit Kit’s father asked him if he was brave enough to try. Kit Kit said yes. He ended up catching one fish with a spear and was praised by his father. This may give him the wrong idea, namely, that he is doing the right thing, that hurting animals is not a big deal, and he will get praised for being “courageous.” 6歲的傑傑和爸爸到中國河北旅行,這裡有一項遊樂項目是 用魚叉捉魚。

Case 2: This is the first day of school for Siu Ming. His mother told him before setting foot on the school campus, “No need to worry. If someone tries to hurt you, just tell us and we will show him!” They try to nurture his masculinity by advising him to take revenge if anyone tries to take advantage of him. This sort of “guidance” misleads kids into thinking that attacking people using violence is the way to solve problems..

Baby Goes Brutal? The scenarios mentioned earlier involve children in their early years. But even one-year old can throw tantrums – biting, and beating others without reason. Experts indicate that it is part of the developmental process for babies and toddlers, and stems from instinct. Let’s explore their brutal factors together! • They lack the verbal ability to express themselves effectively, so they become brutal in order to carry out their negative emotions. • They are defending themselves out of instinct, as they do not allow anyone to interfere with their interests. • They are going through an oral developmental period, where they may have a tendency to put things in their mouth for chewing, including arms and hands of others. • They are creating their own personal space. When they are forced to squeeze themselves into a congested area, they may express a reflex to push anything in front of them to make more room for themselves. • They are going through a momentary bad mood. When hunger, fatigue, or obstacles assail them, they may carry out their negative emotions by beating someone. • They are testing a cause-and-effect relationship. They learn that there are consequences following their actions, so they are testing different effects based on their behaviour.

on Celine Yeung, 3 yrs Gray Blouse HK$369 White Dot Knitted Cardigan HK$499 Black Canvas Pants HK$279 All from Elle Petite

We often hear about the subject of school bullying in the media and in movies. It seems that bullying and violence go hand-inhand. But experts emphasise that “Violence is not equivalent to bullying. Bullying is a planned act in gaining benefits through the use of offensive behaviour.” Violence refers more to kids who demonstrate offensive and destructive behaviour. That is why kids tend to encounter bullying in school or group situations. Factors involved in bullying are more complicated and need further attention and care from parents and schools. www.peegaboo.com | PJ

Enter Nursery Early = More Violent? According to Raising Babies: Should Under 3s Go to Nursery? author and renowned parenting psychologist Steve Biddulph, suggests that sending children under age 3 to nurseries is harmful to their development. Increasing evidence shows that children raised by people other than their parents have a higher tendency to express offensive and even anti-social behaviours. These behaviours will affect their ability to develop close relationships with others later on. His findings focus mainly on parents who send their 6-month-old babies to full day nurseries. He believes that parents are the best and safest caregivers for their children.

Pros and Cons

Opinion is divided on his claims. Supporters found further evidence showing children taken care of by their mothers performed better in developmental tests than the ones from daycare or relatives. Those opposed believe his claims need further research support. Furthermore, it is believed that for a 3- or 4-year-old child, a good childcare service can effectively raise their cognitive and language development.

Research from the journal, Aggression and Violent Behaviour, indicates that attention to health risk factors at the prenatal stage could stop children’s tendencies to become violent in the future. Health risks factors include lead exposure, tobacco use during pregnancy, depression and stress, etc.

England’s riots this summer caused widespread disturbance in many cities; reportedly the youngest rioter was aged 7. The General Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders condemned the dysfunction of families, cultural and social values such as consumerism, etc. Furthermore, the British government reiterated its earlier promise of offering free parenting programmes to 50,000 parents with children under the age of 5. Its purpose is to educate parents on how to handle issues related to child discipline, communication and conflict problems. We can see the impact of family discipline on children’s early years. If we plant the seeds of violence and let these sprout without guidance or care, they will grow to be toxic plants. Parents should seize the chance to correct children’s aggressive acts while still young. In this way they are in a position to stem future violence.

Create a caring environment In order for children to develop in a positive environment, creating a harmonious atmosphere in the family is imperative. Parents should try to avoid direct confrontation with their children, and try to maintain respect and care toward all family members. Also, parents should be circumspect when selecting audiovisual and reading materials, mindful to choose those which will have a positive influence on their children’s development. Furthermore, parents should not shrink from having their children make new friends for fear of aggression on the part of others. Parents can guide them to develop wholesome friendships; the more acquaintances they have, the more chance they have of developing their social skills. A caring environment can stimulate children to develop and nurture positive behaviour.

Any toys that will induce aggressive behaviour (e.g. toy guns and knives), TV games, shows and movies containing violent scenes, will influence children to display aggressive acts. Although it is challenging to completely avoid these in this day and age, we can focus on positive messages such as not killing people, and not harming animals. Parents should expose children to these messages in order to counterbalance the effects of negative stimuli.

Feature Balance strictness and harshness Child aggression is not simply infantile or naïve behaviour. Parents must be firm about stemming aggressive acts and telling them these are not acceptable. At the same time they should not go overboard in disciplining them because they may listen to you for the moment, but take their anger out on others later on..

Love but do not Spoil Do not use physical force on violent children. Try to give them the love and care they need and understand their motivation. When they know they are being loved and cared for, they will develop a sense of security, and gradually change their behaviour to show care to others. Never spoil them and let them take the lead. Parents who do this lose the upper hand in educating their children.

Proper treatment for aggressive acts We have listed several scenarios and examples concerning types of violent acts and aggression. But it becomes more complicated when parents face these situations. For instance, children tend to lie after attacking a person in order to cover their mistakes. Parents can follow the following guidelines in handling these situations: First, parents should be privy to the whole story as to who was right or wrong. When they guide their children, parents are then in a position to establish a correct concept of right and wrong. Secondly, try to categorise the motives behind the aggressive acts and use different methods to arrest the misguided behaviour.

An incorrect latch is the most common cause of breastfeeding problems. You can seek help you at each feed to achieve correct latch and position until you are confident.

Your milk will “come-in” between the 3rd day to 5th day and your breasts will feel full and heavy. Remember, the more your baby feeds, the more milk will be produced. It is a “supply and demand” system.

We all begin to develop language and vocabulary at birth. Although she won’t be able to talk for some time your infant is listening closely to the speech of the people around her. Carefully associating actions and routines with sounds and words. It is also the case that infants love to grasp objects and put things into their mouths. This combination of listening and touch provides parents with a terrific opportunity to teach their child vocabulary in their first year, when they learn it best. When your child is holding a child safe toy or are putting one in their mouth, describe the toy for them. Lean in close to your child’s face and in a fun animated voice talk to them about the toy; describe its shape, its colour, its texture and its size. This creates an automatic association for your child between the toy and the vocabulary, with the added joy of getting your undivided attention. It takes just a few moments but the simple description combined with touch and your attention is a powerful learning moment for your infant.

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity. Children become resilient not by avoiding challenges, but by receiving support to overcome them. To achieve this, they need a healthy self-esteem, self-efficacy (or the sense that they can make things happen), and to be able to control their emotions.

W

hen we want children to develop a healthy self-esteem, we must avoid praise and replace it with acknowledgment. This is because we develop low selfesteem either because we have skills and qualities that we value but are not aware of them, or because (in a perfectionist pattern), we expect so much of ourselves that no one on the planet could achieve it all. Parents can prevent or repair low self-esteem from either source by giving children information about their achievements, without labelling these as “good” or judging the child to be “good” for achieving them. This is because (in child-speak) if we are good when we get things right, we would be bad if we got them wrong. Acknowledgment involves congratulating, celebrating and sharing children’s joy in their accomplishments. We can ask: “Are you pleased with that?... You look proud”. We can add an opinion: “I agree with you. I think you deserve to be”. And we can tell them about our own values (instead of about themselves): “I appreciate that you did that...I admire that you told the truth...I’m impressed at the work you put into that”. In this way, children learn about who they are, not who they have to be to earn our respect. The second skill children need is to

know that they can make decisions for themselves and control their own lives. This means giving them choices over everyday issues: what they want for breakfast, whether to wear the red or the blue T-shirt, how they want their hair...and so on.

years of age, this is the only way to help them when they are upset. While having a cuddle, they can calm themselves. The second method is also one we know well, because we use it for ourselves. When we are distressed, we

Children learn self-control the same way we do. The first method is to get support from someone they love. Third, children need to learn emotional self-control. As babies, their survival demanded that they communicated everything they felt, so that their parents knew what they needed. So it is normal for them not to know how to control their feelings. But adults’ wellbeing requires that we choose when and how to communicate our feelings. This is an important skill to learn, not just because adults don’t want to have to endure children’s meltdowns, but – far more importantly – because, during the dark times of disappointment and grief, young people need to know how to manage their despair. This inoculates them against suicide.

do something soothing, such as have a relaxing bath, do some exercise or take a rest, watch TV or listen to music. In the same way, then, when older children are having a meltdown and are not yet ready for a hug, we can invite them to go somewhere pleasant and do something they enjoy, until they feel better. They might play on their computer, listen to music or tinker with their toys. While this seems as if it might be a reward for “bad” behaviour, children don’t have meltdowns to be disruptive: they have meltdowns because they cannot help it. With our guidance and with practice, they will learn how.

Children learn self-control the same way we do. The first method is to get support from someone they love, with a hug or a kind word. If they are under 3

W

e know that reading aloud to children is a critical step towards helping them learn to read. They learn important pre-reading skills: letter names and sounds, rhyming words, vocabulary, how stories work with a beginning, middle and end and that the words on the page carry the message and tell the story. Children also develop essential concepts about print as they understand how to turn the pages, how to read from left to right (in English, or in some Chinese books, right to left and up to down) and the difference between a letter, a word or character structure and a sentence. Most important of all, reading aloud builds a love of reading which children will need when they begin to read on their own. The Millennium Cohort Study (2010) tracked nearly 15,000 children born in 2000 and 2001 from birth to 5, and found that children who are read to every day at 3 were more likely to flourish in their first year in primary school – not just in language and literacy but also in maths.

Connection with the book When children are read to, they learn about the joy and fun of books. They make connections between the things in the story and their own lives and find objects that are familiar “He has blue bear just like me!” Gradually they realise that the words in the book are telling a story that they can talk about and remember. “The dog was happy to see his friend.” Reading together gives parents a chance to personalise the book for their child and read at his pace. They can pause and discuss interesting pictures and funny words. Parents can re-read familiar books over and over so their child can “learn the book” and be a reader too. There is such an amazing variety of wonderful books for parents and children to enjoy together and the age level and interest of the child is very important when selecting the right story. Books with vibrant illustrations or pop-up books are fun to read since most children are interested in colours and familiar objects. Since young children are eagerly acquiring language, books that tell funny or clever stories with uncommon words such as The Maestro Plays by Bill Martin Jr. or even The Incy Wincy Spider. Gaining popularity are personalised stories where parents can help make their own books with their children which is wonderful activity for a parent to engage and bond with their child. We know that being able to rhyme is an essential prereading skill and there are many great rhyming books available.

Learning

Challenges to overcome We know that sometimes parents are tired and busy and it is important for them to understand how essential the daily read aloud time can be for their children’s development. Parents can overcome challenges to reading aloud daily by establishing a familiar routine, having books available throughout the house, making the reading time special with a blanket or food treat and reading when the child is interested. Finding the right book and reading it with enthusiasm and expression helps a restless child to engage in the story. It is fine to read when children are colouring or playing. They can listen to the story and will often come back to see a special picture.

A successful story time depends on several things. Probably most important is that the parent who is doing the reading have a positive and accepting attitude. If the parent has read the book before and can deliver the story with enthusiasm and expression, it is more fun and interesting for the child to listen. Sitting in a comfortable place, snuggling up, looking at the child while reading, letting your child set the pace (you don’t have to finish the book or read word for word) and having a conversation about the story will all make your story time rewarding. Your goal is to have fun reading together!!!

eLINKS A True Learning Experience

Text I Angie

There are a variety of learning centres offering interactive English courses for the purpose of raising children’s interest in learning. Mentor Links Education Centre has taken a step further in developing an English programme that provides a holistic approach catering to children’s learning methods, interests, emotional and mental well-being. Mentor Links Education Centre provides eLINKS, a comprehensive English programme developed by Mrs. Josephina Anna Lee, Director of the International Center for the Gifted & Talented (HK) Ltd. She believes that every child has a unique style when it comes to learning, where the typical top-down teaching approach is unfair to students with diverse learning and emotional needs. Flexi-Learning approach was developed incorporating an ongoing children evaluation system and a specially-designed profiling system, from which teachers can evaluate the student’s learning styles, mood and energy levels, and academic strengths and weaknesses. From here, the trained teachers will adapt the lessons in providing a flexible class that is mentally-stimulating, fun and addresses each student’s academic and emotional needs.

Nurturing the Love to Learn

eLINKS is an 8-level English proficiency programme developed under the Flexi-Learning approach to students from K3 to early secondary levels. The syllabus is based on the Cambridge Kids Box and Primary Colours series that covers reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Students will get to “take a step outside the classroom” with group discussions, presentations about a variety of topics and perform certain tasks. This learning process not only benefits them in gaining knowledge they may not encounter in schools, but also strengthens their English proficiency in all 4 areas, and builds their interest and appreciation of the English language. Under the Flexi-Learning approach, students are able to develop a sense of ownership and confidence in their learning pace and needs. Mentor Links Education Centre has also introduced Flexi-Learning into other programmes, such as HABA Playgroup Fun. Kindermusik is another English proficiency programme using this approach to stimulate students’ English learning through music that is coming out soon.

Glory Learning House:

MENSA IQ Training: Think Better, Faster, Cleverer

Mensa is the world’s largest and oldest international high IQ organisation whose members’ Intelligence Quotient (IQ) are proven in the top 2% of the human population. The purpose of Mensa (roundtable in Latin) is to create a “round-table of mind” for members to foster exchanges in generating intellectual and social opportunities. Raymond Ng, Deputy Principle of Glory Learning House and also an American Mensa member, believes the Mensa approach on intelligence and gifted children education is useful to all children. Some parents might ask about the benefit of this course. Mr. Ng believes, instead of ultimately reaching the Mensa qualification, the programme will nurture children to think like gifted children or Mensa members. “Mensa encourages ideas from all angles and perspectives to motivate self-propelled learning, because they can solve many analytical problems typical children can’t do. The goal is to enhance their process thinking skill at least 2 years above their age.”

Interactive activities foster intrinsic learning Raymond believes children’s minds should be cultivated while they are still young. The main focus of the Mensa IQ fundamental class is to provide children (age 2-3) a starting point to foster “stronger than typical cognitive training”. The intermediate class (age 3-6) strengthens their logical and brain power such as memory, process speed, mathematical, language and logical reasoning. Children in the advanced class (age 6 and up) engage in English-only intensive problem solving lessons susing Mensa recommended materials for gifted children and intelligence training. Children who master at the intermediate/advance level can become significantly better problem solvers and academic achievers then others. The activities in these classes are performed in a fun and interactive way to strengthen their concentration, memory, observational, logical, mathematic, and language skills. Certification is awarded after course completion and referral to standardised IQ exams can be provided, if necessary.

How to Identify the Early Signs of Reading Difficulties?

D

uring the preschool years, children should begin to take part in conversation and storytelling, talking about his feelings, as well as mimic adult writing. While individual differences vary, there are some milestones to observe and note. Ask Yourself: • Did your child learn to speak much later than his peers? The first clue to a language and reading problem may be delayed speech. • Does your child recognise the letters in his/her own name? A preschooler should be aware of print around her — understanding that those scribbles on road signs and books are letters that make up words, just like the letters in his name. • Does your child know his/her ABCs? By age 4, he/she should be able to name the letters of the alphabet and recognise their shapes. • Does your child understand how a book works? Children need to understand that people read words,

not pictures. • Can your child follow a simple storyline? Children should ask questions and make comments that show they understand what has been read. What to Do Now: • Read aloud every day to help your child connect letters to speech sounds. • Invite him to join in when words in a storybook are repeated in a chorus. • Sing nursery rhymes and the alphabet song. • Talk to your child as you go about your day pointing out letters on traffic signs, labels, etc. • Play word games while traveling in the car or waiting in line.

Expert Says Music

Why Rhythm is Important in Piano Learning?

W

hat is rhythm and why is it so important while learning how to play the piano?

First of all, if you take a closer look at our daily lives, rhythm is everywhere. Waking up from the sound of the alarm clock in the morning, brushing our teeth, cutting fruits on a cooking board, etc….Everyday, we are surrounded by things with rhythmic patterns without our notice. Isn’t that interesting? The moment you step out of the door with your high heels, you would realise your walking sound is rhythmic as well. What a surprise! In the office, the rhythm of typing we hear could also

be a fun pattern. That is when you realise rhythm is everywhere without boundaries. In the world of music, rhythm is considered the “bones”. It gives structure and shape to the composition. If we lose the rhythm in music, it will be like changing the shape of the piece, making it almost impossible to recognise the work even with all the right pitches. Therefore, if we want to make music, maintaining a strong sense of rhythm is a priority. To achieve that, daily practice with the metronome is like taking in calcium. Over time, it will strengthen our “bones”. Second of all, rhythm sets the mood of

the music. For example, dottedrhythm melody creates a fun and exciting feeling. Whole notes give weight and calmness. Consecutive sixteenth-notes offer energy and intensity. In order to express and differentiate kind of feelings through the keyboard, we should be very precise with each type of rhythm. To conclude, we should always be conscious about rhythm while playing the piano instead of just focusing on playing all the right notes throughout.

Growing in Love...

N

owadays it is not an uncommon sight to see children screaming in toy shops and crying for new toys. It is not only embarrassing for parents to witness the emotionally charged episode, it is also frustrating and stressful for both parents and kids. While it is important for parents to teach their little ones how to regulate their emotions, parents can also make use of the opportunity to teach their children the difference between “wants” and “needs”. While “needs” represent the basic necessities required for survival such as food, water, shelter and clothing, “wants” are the favourable

objects that one would like to have. It is certainly normal for parents to wish to pamper their children with new toys and delicious food. Yet, most parents also hope their kids can learn to feel grateful for and appreciate what they have. Parents can involve their children with different charity and volunteer work where they learn to donate their time and money to those in need. If children are given the opportunity to see the lives of the less fortunate, they are more likely to become less self-centered and learn to appreciate what they have. Volunteer work helps to broaden children’s perspective of the world and teach them about love and care for others. Charitable activities are not only meaningful and educational, they can also help to cultivate a caring and considerate personality in children.

Choose the Spectacles for Your Kids

幫孩子 揀對眼鏡 • Choose lenses and then the frames 先選鏡片 後揀鏡框 In choosing a pair of spectacles, most people will pick frames first. As a result, they may end up with lenses that don’t fit right. The proper procedure recommended is to pick lenses first. First of all, after an eye test, your eyecare professional determines what kind of lens design to correct your vision problem, be it short-sightedness, long-sightedness or others. Later, one decides on the materials of the lenses. Children would want a pair of safe and lightweight glasses, so plastic lenses are ideal as they are more durable and safer.

• Choose frames to match your face

Rectangular frames work well for round faces.

Round frames work well for square faces.

For oval face shapes, any kind of frames would be suitable, with those angular frames bringing out a better effect.

For angular faces, it will be good to choose simplistic designs to soften the facial features.

For heart-shaped faces, it is better to choose frames with a wider bottom, to complement and enhance the face.

• Choose lenses with protective benefits As children’s eyes are still growing, they are more susceptible to the effects of UV rays as compared with that of adults. Transitions lenses are the ideal choice to protect the health of their eyes.

Children do not have the resources to handle stress, and if they have not learned how to manage stress from those around them, they do not have the tools to help themselves. Furthermore, children are more emotional, intuitive and empathetic than adults. Stress is cumulative, and long-term chronic stress can affect the brain. Children become more vulnerable to pressure, rendering them less able to cope with day-to-day tasks. Long -term stress suppresses the immune system and can lead to illness and disease. Thankfully, there is an easy way to help children feel better fast with quick shifts of emotions every time. This method for releasing negative emotions is a combination of talking about the problem, and tapping or massaging meridian points. Meridian points are those used in acupuncture. It’ has been proven by the traditional medical community and scientific journals that meridian channels and points exist and they carry an unseen energy that travels through the body. When manipulated, it can offer healing benefits and in some cases can be used to feel numb pain during surgery. The technique is called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) first discovered by Dr. Roger Callahan, a Psychologist who was helping a client with her intense fear of water. He was studying acupuncture at the same time and when he was treating her with acupuncture while talking about her water phobia, her problem completely vanished. Later an engineer, who studied with Dr. Callahan simplified the process by creating a series of places on the head, face and body to tap (he found that tapping was just as effective as needles) while focusing on the problem and the person felt better almost every time. The discovery statement in EFT is that all negative emotions are a blockage in our meridian or energy system in the body. Gary Craig, the founder of EFT was able to find the key points and by tapping on all these points while repeating the problem, the negative emotion would vanish and often a sense of hope, understanding or optimism would take its place.

Health First identify the emotion. Second, find a phrase that the child would like to feel instead. This can vary depending on the age.

Using the EFT short cut points, the parent can tap on the following:

For example: Sally is 6 yrs old and is frightened because she had a nightmare about ghosts. She cannot go back to sleep and is crying.

Use 3 or 4 fingers and tap between the eyebrows repeating, “afraid of ghosts.” Use 2 fingers and tap under both eyes repeating “afraid of ghosts.” Tap under both collar bones or depending on the child’s age or situation, beat the chest like a gorilla, repeating, “afraid of ghosts.” Tap under both arms like you’re giving yourself a hug or for younger kids, we can say scratch like a monkey, repeating “afraid of ghosts.” Repeat the above one more round and when the child calms down, you can say, I’m safe and loved, and repeat till calm.

This can be used in all situations.

For example: Timmy is 7 years old and is angry that his little brother Jake takes his toys without asking and sometimes breaks them. The phrase is “mad at Jake” and how he would like to feel could be calm and happy. After a few rounds of EFT, not only will you be able to calm Timmy down, it allows the child and parent to talk about the problem calmly and come up with a solution together.

When emotions are calm, it’s easier for both child and parent to come up with a solution that works for everyone. More importantly, it teaches the child a tool that allows them to manage their emotions, and this above all else, is the key to a happy and successful life.

North Cape is the northernmost point of Europe, with a latitude of 71°. Due to the slightly tilted axis of the earth, the area within the Arctic Circle is exposed to daylight 24 hours a day. As a result, you can see the sun after 12 a.m. The best time to witness this is from May 14 to July 29 every year. Once you exit the North Cape Museum and head towards the end of the cliff, you will be able to enjoy a panoramic view of the endless sea and the natural phenomenon of the midnight sun.

Although Oslo went through a bombing and shooting rampage earlier this year, it can be considered an isolated event. As we toured the streets of Oslo that day, everything was peaceful and quiet. We hope the incident won’t deter people from visiting Norway. Actually Oslo is a city that represents peace; Oslo City Hall is where the Nobel Peace Prize is presented.

The Monolith

Another reason that Oslo is so remarkable is the Vigeland Park located in northwestern Oslo. The whole park is themed on life from birth to death through several hundred sculptures made by renowned sculptor Gustav Vigeland. Every sculpture tells a life; they demonstrate Mr. Vigeland’s exquisite and delicate workmanship. Among them, Angry Boy, The Fountain, and The Monolith are the most popular ones. I couldn’t help wondering if anyone discusses and explores the meaning of life with their kids.

MAGGIE BEAUTY

Where True Beauty Thrives Growing up with Maggie Beauty

Maggie Beauty maintains its reputation under the leadership of Alina Tse (left), providing professional beauty treatment services. Now her expertise is incorporated with her daughter and Business Development Manager, Christine Kong.

Having spent many of her childhood years in the beauty centre, Christine learned from her mother, Ms. Alina Tse, the CEO of Maggie Beauty, who runs the centre with passion and enthusiasm, in providing her customers with top quality skin treatment. Christine gradually developed an interest in beauty and skin care. At the same time, she saw the need for upgrading standards. As a result, she decided to study Clinical Nutrition and graduated with a BSc. degree from the University of California-Davis. Maggie Beauty became one of the pioneers in the industry with a certified clinical nutritionist. Coming back to Hong Kong with a

degree did not automatically make her queen of the beauty centre. She started working from the basics like head wrapping and face cleansing for customers, and stocking goods in the warehouse. She became familiar with every aspect of the business before being promoted to her current position. “This is how my mother started her business 26 years ago entirely on her own.” Alina established her empire in 1985 as she saw a growing potential for women’s spending power and their desire to maintain their beauty. She is deeply involved in the business and treats it like her own daughter. As far as she is concerned, she has two daughters under her wings – Maggie Beauty and Christine.

Adhering its core values

Reputable Service One of the important things Christine learned from Alina is giving “honest and practical advice to customers”. “We don’t simply tell our customers that they will get good healthy skin in just one treatment. Skin is our body’s largest organ. Like our health, it takes time for it to recover and stay in good condition.” Alina insisted on providing well-rounded skincare treatment for every customer, catering to their skin types and conditions with a comprehensive follow-up service. Christine picked this up from her mother, resulting in positive feedback from customers and outperforming competition in the industry.

Maggie Beauty sustains its success by introducing new innovations and quality treatment in skincare, especially targeting lumpy skin surfaces, acne, and sensitive skin. For example, they introduced acne eliminating technology to eliminate acne naturally using herbal formulae, resulting in smooth and healthy skin. They also introduced silk protein collagen recover treatment and collagen activation treatment to accelerate collagen production to recover uneven and lumpy

few months ago my older son came home from school with surprising news: he had learned to play chess. Now he wanted to play at home. Wow, I thought. Can a 6-year old learn to play chess that quickly? I was impressed, despite myself.

That chess set has become a permanent fixture on our living room floor. More surprising than anything else, my then almost-4year old learned to play as well! To him, it was just another game. So he learned that a knight moves in an L-shape, a rook moves straight, a bishop travels diagonally, etc.

The only chess set we have at home is a set I bought in Bolivia over 10 years ago. It is more of an ornamental set than a functional one. The pieces are made of porcelain (the Incas vs. the Spaniards, how apt!) and whenever anyone plays with them, I threaten to put them on the next plane to Bolivia should one of the pieces break.

I was roped in too, and hurriedly looked up chess rules for kids on the Internet. As a kid I never quite wrapped my mind around chess, but suddenly as an adult I was made to.

So it was with great apprehension that I watched my son playing. I thought his enthusiasm about chess was a passing fad like a hundred other games and toys that had marched their way into our house and been quickly relegated to a dusty shelf. But a week went by, and he still insisted on playing chess. Since I wanted to keep my set intact, we purchased a more functional set.

In the last 6-odd years I was made to participate in ambitious construction projects, play games of war and strategy, set up mock battles and traffic scenes. Chess is the latest.

I sometimes bemoan the fact that I don’t have a daughter with whom to play dress-up, dolls and tea parties. I have two rambunctious boys. But the upshot of it is that they taught me to play chess in adulthood. And they regularly beat me at it.
