You are the apple of my eyes! In the past month, the movie You Are the Apple of My Eye has been a great hit in Hong Kong. Its warm reflection on youthful memories is so irresistible that even PJ jumped on the bandwagon and produced this month’s feature: “Christmas Then and Now”. Let’s relish our past together during this joyous and festive season! Time flies – my husband and I have just celebrated our wedding anniversary. It is our 4th year together in this home. Two years after getting married, a new arrival joined our small home of two. The following year, another family member joined us. A sweet home of four was created in 3 years’ time – I am so proud that one of the greatest missions in my life has been achieved. Apparently, my husband played an important role in making my life happy and complete – from dating, through marriage and parenthood – and it is this same loving husband and father who makes me happily devote myself to our family. Just the way he does. In the good old years, we were the “apple” of each other’s eyes; in recent years, we have two more “tiny apples” before our eyes. I would venture to say that our vision seems to have narrowed. In actuality we see more – children are eye-openers. They change the way you look at the world as well as add sweetness to your life.

I have been living and working in Hong Kong for over 11 years now, I am a British Born Chinese (BBC) originally from London, UK. I work as a Graphic Design Manager for a brand design consultancy. I play sports and like to keep fit and support Liverpool FC. I am Chairman of the Official Liverpool Supporters’ Club Hong Kong Expatriate Branch which involves dealing with Anfield on a regular basis and we watch the live matches regularly together as fans in our home venue of Amici. The best part about being a parent is – everything! It completely changes your perspective on your outlook on life. Holding a new born, watching them take their first steps, saying mummy and daddy, etc. There are too many to mention but it is wonderful seeing them develop their own personality. Recently, Jayden went to playgroup and at circle reading time, a mum was reading very loudly to her daughter. Jayden decided to get up and walk over and tell the mum to be quiet by saying Ssssshhhhhh…twice! The scene made me laugh out loud.

What do you wish you had been told before you (or your partner) gave birth, or the things about being a parent that no one ever told you? Keeping grounded and keep the passion and love alive your marriage. It is all too easy to fall into the trap of focusing so much of your energy into your children. At the end of the day if the parents are happy, then your children will be too. What are your best parenting resources? I did read some of Gina Ford’s Little Contented Baby, but there isn’t much reading for men on the market, but I believe the best resources/advice are from your own parents or friends that have had babies – there advice is truly valuable.

“Ho Ho Ho!! Merry Christmas!” “He’s here! He’s here! I see him!” “Come on, hurry! He’s going to the 20th floor now!” “I see him! He’s really giving out Christmas presents!” The resounding slap of countless flip flops could be heard on the staircases, as we ran up and down excitedly. Knowing Santa had started giving out gifts from the upper storeys of the building, every kid on the lower floors was both excited to meet Santa, and slightly anxious should he come empty-handed. This particular Santa Claus was actually a committee member from our residential building. I still cherish the awe of unwrapping Santa’s gifts, whether they were crackers, candies, mechanical pencils, balloons, or a Santa hat. What was important was that our hearts were filled with unbounded joy, and what price can you affix to that? That night was neither a white Christmas, nor was it followed by a big festive dinner, nor were there any glamorous Christmas decorations. But all residents immersed themselves in the Christmas spirit, especially our “Santa Claus”, who was busy enjoying his moment in the limelight. My adult neighbours were also in high-spirited mode that night, celebrating Cantonese-style. They would not let Christmas Eve pass by quietly, and so happily engaged in a mahjong battle till dawn. My father was more of a seaman than a devotee of mahjong, so my mother was glad to spend every precious moment with him. Hugs and kisses were the only gifts my parents could afford for us, but the abundance of love was sufficient for us in happily counting down to Christmas. My recollections of childhood Christmases are full of happiness and simplicity.

Time flies, and now I am a father to 3 children. As they are currently studying in an international school, their Christmas spirit is stronger than in my childhood. They anticipated the arrival of the big day by sharing their classmates’ Christmas plans with us, such as numerous choices of festive dining, dynamic experiences in celebrating the day in the air or on the water, etc., in the hopes of inspiring us with similar options. However, I believe the real meaning of celebrating Christmas is not about materialism or consumerism; these are devoid of joy. In recent years, we chose to have house gatherings, inviting close relatives to celebrate Christmas together. Our kids prepare food for the feast and gift boxes for the guests, so that they all play a hands-on role in spreading the blessings. My childhood Christmases were full of affectionate family warmth. The only Christmas spirit she got was hanging a bag by her bedside; a tin of chocolates would be there the next day. Today, she is a housewife of 2 kids, Emma 9 and Matthew 7. Her husband, William, is a New Zealander. They spent 10 years living in the UK. Her family has been in Hong Kong for almost 2 years due to William’s work. When we lived in the UK, the first signs of Christmas were billboards about locations for getting Christmas trees, ice skate rinks, Christmas fairs and markets, visiting Santa’s Grotto and the show times of Christmas pantomimes. At our children’s school, we received notices about their character roles in the nativity play. We dressed the kids up according to the characters. Also, they had to prepare a box with presents to be sent to underprivileged children. Christmas season is also a time for pantomimes! A pantomime (panto) is a traditional British Christmas play adapting fairy tales such as Snow White, Peter Pan, and Jack and the Beanstalk. Cross-dressing plays a big part in the panto, usually giving audiences lots of

On Christmas Eve, after attending Christmas Carols at our village square, we went home to prepare for the arrival of Father Christmas. We sprinkled glittering dust in our garden so that he would know where to land. We left mince pies (filled with dried fruit mince), beer, carrots and water for him and his reindeer. Christmas stockings were hung along the mantelpiece above the fireplace. Children went to bed quietly hoping they would get everything they wanted to receive. Children woke up at 3 a.m. on Christmas Day as they couldn’t wait any longer to see their presents! We had to settle them down and tell them to wait till 7 a.m. to open the gifts. Christmas stockings were full of goodies, and presents from Father Christmas!

Christmas dinner was served at midday. Before the dinner began, we had to pull a Christmas cracker. It is a brightly coloured paper tube twisted at both ends for a person to pull on. When it pops open, a small present, a paper crown and a joke written on a small slip of paper fall out. We asked the person to put on the paper crown and guess the punch line of the joke. My favourite joke is: “What is Mum’s favourite Christmas carol? – Silent Night”. After dinner we would play family games, chat, and unwrap more presents. Christmas tea was served around 6 p.m. with cheeses, snacks, mince pies and biscuits. Everybody was happy and contented. Boxing Day signalled the start of the Christmas sale! Some shops opened at 7 a.m. and queues could already be seen at 6 a.m. We spent the day relaxing and opening leftover gifts. Christmas decorations had to be taken off before the end of the 12 Days of Christmas (January 5).

We then decorated the whole house with wreaths, gingerbread men houses, candles, lightings and ornaments. I always looked forward to Christmas Day because it was the day when all our family and friends could spend some special time together!

Haruka Most of my friends in Japan didn’t really celebrate Christmas. Christmas Day is not a national holiday in Japan, therefore most of them didn’t even know what was special about the 25th other than buying cakes or watching some TV programmes showing Christmas decorations around the world. The only common thing we talked about was, “What did you get from Santa Claus?”

When I was growing up, our family moved around a lot, from one country to another. So my Christmas memories are from many different places, like Spain, Brazil, and Mexico. I asked my mother how we spent our Christmases when I was little because I didn’t have many particular memories from kindergarten. She said we always travelled during the holidays. It was a family holiday time wherever we were.

I remember our family used to worry about how Santa would drop gifts off for us because we lived in an apartment, and the majority of houses in Japan don’t have a chimney. We thought Santa must have had a hard time leaving us the gifts. We usually found the gifts on our little terrace outside the apartment. I remember our Christmas presents being very cold and icy. Despite that, Santa knew what to get us every year because we always left a little wish list card on our Christmas tree prior to the big day.

interview AJ 卓天譽 When AJ was 4 years old, his pianist resume has already surpassed children triple his age – he has already passed the 5th grade exam from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). Earlier this year, AJ’s piano performance at the talent programme “Asian Angel 2011” has stunned the audience. It is not surprising that the 5-year old won the competition. While many parents yearn for AJ’s gift as an exceptional pianist at such a young age, his mother, Jacqueline, shares the fact that it took prolonged persistence. We asked AJ to dedicate a song to his mum, what would it be? AJ answered with a bashful smile: “The Flight of the Bumblebee”. Perhaps it’s too early for AJ to realise his semblance to the song composer, Rimsky-korsakov, where both of their mothers play a role in their musical lives. When the day comes AJ being a piano master, his mother’s name will sure leave a place at his resume’s references. 許多父母都很羡慕 AJ如此小的年紀就擁有成為出色鋼琴家的天賦，但 AJ的媽媽 Jacqueline說，才能更來自不懈的堅持。我們問AJ：若要彈一曲送媽媽，會送甚麼？AJ 有點害羞地回答：《野蜂飛舞 The Flight of the Bumblebee》。AJ選這一首大概因為他喜歡這一首，他或許不知道，這曲子作者Rimsky-korsakov的音樂人生，正正起源於母親的影響。他朝一日，AJ若成為真正的鋼琴家，履歷上一定少不了他母親的名字。

Musical-filled Surroundings 讓音樂觸手可及 It began with AJ’s first visit to Disneyland where the band in the parade immediately caught his attention. He stayed and listened to the whole performance. Although there is no piano in the band, Jacqueline noted his interest in music. “I think piano is a better musical instrument for him to start with due to its simplicity of hitting accurate notes.” She maintained a musically-filled environment for him by playing different genres of music during nap and play time. She also told him stories about the beauty of the piano and its music. “I placed pianos of different sizes everywhere in the house. I also played simple children’s songs for him on the piano to peak his interest.” It didn’t take too long for Jacqueline to encounter the first obstacle, before he even got the chance for his fingers to hit the right notes. No teachers were willing to teach him. “They all told me that learning piano at his age would harm his fingers and he would face difficulties in concentrating on one thing for too long.” But that didn’t deter her. She was firmly convinced of his piano playing capability, regardless of age. She found a teacher who shared her belief: Mr. Ricky Yau. AJ’s talent quickly flourished under his training.

They are little human beings that can be emotional sometimes. 就如大人有時都會沒胃口，他只是一個小朋友，也會有情緒化的時候。那是AJ第一次去迪士尼樂園，遊行樂隊很快吸引了他的注意，他站定定地聽（看）完了整場表演。雖然樂隊裡沒有鋼琴演奏，Jacqueline卻注意到AJ對音樂的興趣。「我認為鋼琴是他開始學習音樂的最佳樂器，因為簡單易學。」她竭力創造一個到處都充滿音樂的環境，在他睡覺、玩耍時播放不同類型的音樂，亦會告訴他關於鋼琴的故事，跟他講鋼琴音樂的美。「我在房間各處都擺放了不同款式的鋼琴，也會用鋼琴彈一些簡單的兒童歌曲以激發他的興趣。」還沒等AJ彈對最基本的琴鍵，Jacqueline便踢到鐵板了：沒有老師肯教，「他們都告訴我，他在這個年紀學鋼琴會傷到手指，而且這個年紀也很難長時間專注於一件事情上。」 Jacqueline並沒有因此被打沉，她堅信年齡無礙於兒子發展鋼琴彈奏的才能。她找到了和自己理念相同的邱世傑老師，AJ在他的訓練下進步神速。

Piano Learning: An Endless Journey 學琴之路無止境 Despite carrying winner titles and awards, AJ was just another gleeful high-spirited 5-year old jogging and running that day. Later from his own spontaneity, he sat in front of the piano and played The Turkish March. Although Jacqueline was proud to see his musical achievement, she also recalled hitting bumpy roads, “Piano learning is an endless journey that never goes smooth. There are times when he doesn’t want to face the piano at all.” Instead of forcing him to practice, she patiently listens to his needs. “It’s like when we lose our appetites. He is a little human being who can sometimes be emotional.” She takes a flexible approach by shortening practice duration, and giving more breaks between practices. “He also understands that if he really loves playing piano and wants to play it well, he needs to continue to practice in order to perfect his art. He needs to develop a sense of responsibility.” 雖說AJ拿過很多獎，有很多頭銜，但他只是一個5歲的孩子，精力充沛，喜歡到處跑跑跳跳。和其他孩子

“AJ has excellent memorisation skills with a multi-dimensional perspective. He knows how to take things slowly. His attentiveness to every detail helps strengthen his skills in piano playing, a good quality that distinguishes him from others.” However, Mr. Yau also emphasised that gift alone is not sufficient to nurture children’s interest in music. A correct attitude towards children’s learning is required by parents, “Music is a language for children to develop an emotional connection. Instead of focusing on winning awards or passing exams, parents should give emotional support for children to truly fall in love with music.” 「AJ擁有驚人的記憶力和立體思維，他知道如何慢慢地學習、吸收，他對細節的專注，亦有助於增強他的鋼琴演奏技巧，這正是他相較於其它孩子的優勝之處。」邱Sir強調，僅僅依靠孩子的天賦，來培養他對音樂的興趣是不夠的。對於小朋友的音樂學習，父母需要持有正確的態度。「音樂對於孩子而言，是一門建立情感聯繫的語言。父母們應該給予孩子精神上的支援，讓他們真正愛上音樂，而不應把焦點放在拿獎或考級。」

local mums-to-be do to help keep exposure to harmful substances to a minimum? We has asked an obstetrician how to keep the body as pure as possible during pregnancy.

Are medicines safe? 服用藥物安全嗎？

Dr Alexander Doo, an obstetrician at The Women’s Clinic, says, “During the first trimester, the foetus is going through the organ formation stage and chemicals and toxins can be passed to the foetus though the placenta and have the potential of causing congenital defects. This is the reason why we ask mothers to be very aware of any medication they take at this stage. Not all toxins and chemicals are passed onto the foetus, and some medications have been shown to be safe during pregnancy. Dr Doo says for morning sickness he recommends natural remedies such as ginger candies, lemon droplets and peppermint. “However, should vomiting be severe some antiemetics can also be used as they have been shown to be essentially safe, but should still be used with caution during the first trimester,” says Dr Doo. 杜堅能醫生是The Women’s Clinic的產科醫生，他說：「在懷孕頭3 個月，是胎兒器官形成的階段，化學物及有毒品質，能透過胎盤，傳送給胎兒，因而有可能導致先天缺陷。因此，醫生會要求在懷孕初期的女士服藥時要非常小心。並不是所有毒素或化學物，都會傳送到胎兒體內，部份藥物若在懷孕期服用仍是安全的。」杜醫生說，孕婦如要舒緩晨吐的問題，他建議採用一些天然的食物，例如是薑糖、檸檬汁和薄荷。「不過，假如嘔吐情況嚴重，可採用一些抑吐劑，過往經驗顯示，這些藥物是相當安全的，但若在懷孕頭3個月使用，也務必要小心。」

Is it necessary to eat only organic food? 需要只吃有機食物嗎？

Dr Doo agrees that evidence is yet to prove an adverse health effect from consuming the low levels of pesticides commonly found in food. However, Dr Doo says, “It makes sense for the most vulnerable groups in the community – children and pregnant women – should when possible, eat organic fruit and vegetables; non-organic fruit and vegetables can often carry the highest pesticide load. For organic meat, poultry, eggs, and milk, the direct health benefit is less clear.

Dr Doo says, “Breastfeeding is the best – although this may not always be possible. As parents today are increasingly choosing an organic lifestyle, it seems prudent that parents would only want their children to move to a diet that contains fewer, possible harmful elements. An organic formula maybe a good safe alternative should the mother be unable/or choose not to breastfeed.” 杜醫生說：「餵哺母乳是最好的，雖然這並不是常常可以做得到。今天的父母們，愈來愈傾向選擇有機的生活方式，父母們希望，子女養成的飲食習慣，能將每天食物中，含有害的成份降至最低，這

Are highly processed foods, such as luncheon meats, harmful? 高度加工食品，例如午餐肉，會否對人體有害？

Dr Doo says, “Salt intake and water retention go hand-in-hand, especially when you’re pregnant. For some women, high sodium intake may lead to potential pregnancy complications, such as high blood pressure. High-salt foods are, by and large, those that are highly processed: canned soups, frozen dinners and boxed grain dishes. Processed foods are generally higher in the ingredients you don’t want more of – fat, sugar, salt and calories – and lower in important nutrients and vitamins. 杜醫生說：「吸取鹽份和保持體內水份的關係十分密切，對孕婦更是這樣。有些女士，吸取過多的鈉（鹽份），可能會導致潛在的懷孕期綜合症出現，例如高血壓。含鹽量高的食品，大部份都是經高度加工的，例如罐頭湯、急凍晚餐和飯盒等。加工食品，一般來說，含有更多你不想要的成份，包括脂肪、鹽和卡路里；而重要營

Boosting self-esteem during pregnancy, when the body is changing shape, by using cosmetic and beauty treatments is common. Dr Doo says researchers say most cosmetics and treatments are safe, including tanning cream, facials and waxing.

Dr Doo says, “Use with caution with any insect repellant product that contains the chemical Diethyltoluamide, more commonly known as DEET. A certain amount of the chemical is absorbed through the skin into your bloodstream. In large doses, it can make you seriously ill and DEET has been shown to increase the risk for birth defects in chickens, but not in rats or rabbits. Unfortunately, not much information is available on the possible harmful effects in human pregnancies. But because DEET is considered toxic in high enough doses, it is generally recommended that pregnant women either avoid using repellents containing DEET or use them only in small amounts.”

Anti-ageing products containing high doses of vitamin A – Too much vitamin A can cause birth defects in

babies and many anti-ageing products contain high doses of vitamin A. If you use any wrinkle creams, be sure to check the label and read the ingredients. If you are not sure about any of the ingredients, contact your doctor to find out whether the product is safe or not.

Body wraps – Any type of body wrap that heats your body up and includes covering your stomach probably isn’t safe during pregnancy. A body wrap may also result in dehydration, which can increase your risk of preterm labour. Overheating can also increase your baby’s risk of developing neural tube defects.

As your child begins to experiment with juices, milk drinks and foods, it is also a good age to provide them with some new vocabulary. When your child drinks some juice, describe the flavour, if it’s sour make a sour lemon face and say it in a funny voice say “sour!” or if it’s sweet, give a big smile and say “sweet!”. I find this to be even more fun if I freeze some big pieces of seedless fruit, so the fruit is tasty to suck on, cold and slippery. And as they try to grip and suck on the fruit, use lots of excitement in your voice and describe the taste of the fruit, its temperature and texture. Quiet down: Loud environments create loud kids

hildren yell when they are happy, when they are sad, when they are excited, when they are disappointed, when they are tired, when they are frustrated, when they are overjoyed...in fact, children yell a lot. But mostly, children yell and scream to get their parent’s attention. Yelling is a bad habit: it is annoying, it is tiring and it makes your child seem naughtier than they are. But most importantly, yelling is a bad habit because children who are quick tempered and yell frequently become adults who are more volatile and aggressively argumentative. A yelling habit is a very unpleasant behavioural legacy to leave your child; but it’s not too late to get yelling under control. But first, not all yelling is simply a bad habit; children yell for a variety of reasons.

Hong Kong homes can be noisy places: cell phones, televisions, video games and DVD’s – children have a lot of competition for their parent’s attention. I often talk to parents who are having difficulty with a child who is in a yelling habit and the first thing I encourage them to do is quiet things down at home. Establish times of the day when there is quiet: no TV on, no cell phone ringers on (vibrate or silent is ok) and only soft music permitted. Quiet times are especially important in the mornings before school, during mealtimes and during the last couple of hours before bedtime. A little quiet around the house lets us relax and unwind, and yelling is a lot less likely to happen.

Do not yell at them about yelling Children do not do what we tell them to do, they do what we do. Every parent wants to be able to tell their child how to behave, but the problem is that kids do not listen to our instructions; instead, they imitate our actions. The most common reason children yell when they are angry or frustrated is because that is what their parents do. When we are angry and yell at our child; when we are angry at our spouse, we yell at them; or even when we are frustrated with a store clerk or waitress, we yell at them – each time we yell, we teach our children to yell. As it isn’t fully logical to yell at your child for yelling, it can be a very confusing message for your children.

Infants use cries to tell their parents when they need to eat, sleep, be changed or to communicate their feelings of sadness, fear or frustration. And it is vitally important for parents to respond to all of their infant’s cries – this is

how infants bond with their parents. So in our first year of life, our most important communications come out in loud cries and distressed screaming. But as a child gets older and their verbal skills improve, so should their ability to communicate without yelling. As a child learns to speak, they must also learn to control the volume of their voice. But it is normal for toddlers to become overwhelmed with emotion – both happy and angry emotions. But it is also in these toddler years that yelling as a bad habit can begin to become a problem. Toddlers are developing their ability to control their emotions and sometimes it is hard for them not to yell; sometimes they just simply become overwhelmed with emotion and loose control – as also do adults sometimes. So how can a parent be sure that their child is not just having difficulty communicating? Mostly, you can tell that your child is using yelling as a bad behavioural habit if the child immediately stops yelling when you give them what they want. When your child yells because they are angry or yell throughout a punishment, then they are

using yelling to manipulate their parents – because they know that adults hate listening to children who are loud.

Yelling gets attention It is virtually impossible to ignore a child that is yelling. As soon as a child raises their voice; every adult – parents, grandparents and strangers – instinctively drop whatever they are doing in that moment to find out what all the noise is about. Children notice this from the very beginning of their lives. Parents, grandparents, and even teachers reward children for yelling because as soon as the child starts to yell and scream, the adult gives them what they want or lets them avoid doing something – eating, going to bed, etc. And this is where the yelling habit comes from: children notice that they get what they want when they yell. They just have to yell loud enough for long enough – especially in public – and they know that their parent will give in and they can get whatever they want. When I think of it this way, it is actually quite amazing that children don’t use yelling more often.

This is why it is extremely important that an adult does not appear intimidated by a yelling child. I know it can be quite difficult to ignore a yelling, melting-down child; but if your child is in the yelling habit then that is what you must do. When your child starts to yell, ignore the yelling and say to them in a calm voice “I cannot listen to you when you are yelling at me; when you stop yelling, we can talk about what is bothering you” – if necessary, walk away from them. They will likely get louder, maybe even become aggressive; still you must continue to ignore them. As long as you ignore the yelling, your child will eventually learn that it doesn’t work anymore.

The most important factor for minimising the use of antibiotics is preventing your children from getting sick. Sounds obvious, but how many of you actually try? Yes dressing appropriately is important, sleeping habits, but what about diet and exercise? Dried Bok Choy Soup with Dates

TIPS Dried bok choy is sweet in taste, it helps relieve heatiness, mo istens the intestines and aids bowel moveme nt. 白菜乾味道甘甜，用來煲湯清香美味且不肥膩，有消燥除熱和潤腸通便的功效。

雙棗菜乾湯 Ingredients • 80g dried bok choy • 500g pork ribs • 2 slices ginger • pinch of salt

材料 • 白菜乾80克 • 排骨500克 • 薑2片 • 鹽適量

Chinese Herbs • 5 red dates • 2 candied dates • 15g sweet almonds • 6g bitter almonds • 1 piece dried tangerine peel

藥材 • 紅棗5粒 • 蜜棗2粒 • 南杏15克 • 北杏6克 • 陳皮1小片

Method 1. Soak dried bok choy in water. Rinse and drain well. 2. Rinse and drain the herbs. Set aside. 3. Scald pork ribs briefly in boiling water. Remove and drain. 4. Put all the ingredients into a soup pot, add 10 cups of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer over low heat for 2 hours. Season with salt to taste.

My friend, who is a mother of three advised me to take him to more interviews so that he could gain more experience. I have already registered Jonathan for interviews in 8 kindergartens.” This is a conversation between two young mothers. Both of them have a son who has just turned two. They are very keen on getting their children into a well-known kindergarten. Most young parents believe that the right kindergarten is a passport to the so-called “Branded Primary School”, following a chance of entering a good secondary school and so on. Am I guessing what’s on your mind right now? “Preparing our children to win at the starting point” is becoming extremely vital to us. By this we mean getting our children into good schools. Do you realize that people with a strong academic background and expertise in their field might not necessarily lead a happy life? So what’s the missing ingredient?

Good Schools Produce High Achievers? Really?

In olden days, children were taught to be respectful, responsible, committed, honest and compassionate. It is so sad that these fundamental values are becoming less important in the eyes of parents nowadays. We all want our child to be the most outstanding one. The enrollment competition is so vigorous that we have forgotten about traditional values which should be passed on to our descendants. Therefore it is not surprising to see even those who were high achievers in school unable to cope with stressful situations and unfavorable circumstances as they enter the work force. Society is facing a new generation of highly talented but overprotected underachievers. People assume that prestigious schools will teach children to differentiate right from wrong, show respect to others, have a sense of responsibility, etc. But the reality is that when teachers work endlessly, pushing the limits of students and striving hard to meet deadlines, values are pushed aside and are consequently unknown to the new generation. Parents should not rely on schools to teach children important values; these should rightfully be taught at home. Six values that can be considered crucial are: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Fairness and Citizenship. These values are simple for children to understand, remember, practice and eventually inculcate into their characters. In the long run these will enable them to lead a decent and successful life. And who are the best role models but their parents? Answer the questions below to see how well you are doing as a parent!

Every year when December approaches, we see Santa Clauses on every corner around town. But that should not stop us from visiting the Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, Finland. Why? Because this is the birthplace of the real Santa Claus! Our travel columnist, Allan Lee, was glad to make the trip this summer with his family! 一到12月，街頭街尾都會見到聖誕老人，但在芬蘭羅凡尼米（Rovaniemi）聖誕老人村的這一位才最正宗！皆因這裡是他的故鄉！他一年四季都住在這裡，我們的旅遊作者Allan Lee便是在今年夏天拜訪了那裡！

Stepping into the Arctic Circle

跨入北極圈

The Arctic Circle crosses through the city of Rovaniemi, and is where the Santa Claus Village is located. A white line has been drawn right in front of the village, labeling its latitude 66° 32”. Crossing over this line means crossing into the Arctic. Many tourists capture this memorable moment of stepping over this line. Kids in particular love to jump back and forth or straddle the line. 羅凡尼米是剛剛好經過北極圈線的城市，聖誕老人村更是正正坐落在這條線上。其大門前的地上畫有一條約1米闊的白線，標示著北緯66度32分，這正是北極圈經過的地方，跨過這條線，便代表正式進入北極圈。所以遊客都爭相在這裡拍照，小朋友更是跳出又跳入，或者兩隻腳分踏兩個區域，十分可愛。

Every year, Santa Claus will receive boxes and boxes of letters sent by children all over the world! You can see how busy he is! Every child hopes he or she will receive a reply from Santa Claus. Believe it or not, we heard that not all replies are personally handwritten by Santa Claus; some are answered by his wizards. If you wish your child to receive a reply from Santa Claus, you can fill out an application form. For only 7 Euros, your child will receive a reply on Christmas Day. It feels really special receiving a blessing from the Arctic Circle, but why not send a Christmas card to your loved ones directly from the Santa Village? Ask your kids to get their friends’ mailing addresses ahead of time. Every letter is postmarked from the Santa Claus Village and has a collection value. You can drop your letters into a yellow mailbox if you want them sent out that day; if you would rather your friends receive blessings on Christmas Day, drop your letters into a red mailbox.

Hello Santa!

你好聖誕老人！ In the Santa Claus Village, what else can be more memorable than capturing a moment with the real Santa Claus? There is a catch – you need to pay a fee for each photo! They are probably the most expensive photos ever, next to wedding photos. Despite the cost, it is still worthwhile to purchase the photos to gratify your kids’ wishes. At the Santa Claus Greeting Centre, we passed through a hidden door and a secret wizard passage to the 2nd floor (no photo taking from this point on). That’s the waiting area to meet Santa Claus! You can see how popular he is! Everyone gets to meet Santa Claus for about 3 minutes. You can ask your kids in advance what they want to ask and what sort of photos they want taken with him. The whole process will be recorded and saved on a flash USB drive, including your chosen photos, the wizard passage, and a Santa Claus screensaver. 來到聖誕老人村，當然要去探訪聖誕老人，和聖誕老人拍照！不過這是要付款的，而且按張計，隨時可能是除婚紗照外最昂貴的照片。不過為了滿足小朋友的心願，看到他們那份喜悅之情，也是值得的。來到Santa Claus Greeting Centre，會由一道秘門進入，然後穿越神秘的精靈隧道。（從這裡開始，便不可拍攝了。）登上二樓，便到了等待候見聖誕老人的地方，可見他多受歡迎！面見聖誕老人的時間約3數分鐘，可叫孩子先想想問聖誕老人甚麼問題，大家又可想定怎樣和聖誕老人拍照，時間所限，要爭分奪秒。這段過程會全程錄影，連同你所選的相片、精靈隧道的影片及聖誕老人的screensaver，都會儲存在一個USB裡。

n August we discovered a kids’ cooking show on TV: Junior Master Chef from Australia. Twice a week, the whole family sat down and watched fascinated as a group of kids cooked up wonders in the kitchen. Their cooking was incredible, even by adult standards. My 6-year-old son was no less impressed than I was. “I want to cook!” he exclaimed. We’ve baked quite a lot together, generally cookies, muffins, or cakes, but I tended to steer my kids clear of the stovetop. Now apparently it was time to tackle that fiery demon. One evening my son donned an apron, stood on a chair, grabbed a wooden spoon, and stirred at the contents of a pot on the stove. He was very focused and enjoyed the whole experience tremendously. To my surprise, it wasn’t half as stressful as I thought it would be. A few instructions were all that were needed to ensure our cooking session went smoothly. “Keep your arm up and away from the edge of the pot. It’s really hot!” “Keep your free hand away from the gas flames. If you touch that,

Creative Education Conference

奇極創作室Switch On 創意教育論壇 CreativeKids celebrated their 20th anniversary this year by hosting an interactive conference last month. Entitled “SWITCH ON”, the Conference meant to spread the message that creativity is just as simple as turning on a switch but with huge impact on children’s future.
