High quality child care looks like
MATH.
In quality child care, toys are tools for learning. Math skills develop as a fun part of everyday activities. Sorting shapes and colors helps children learn to organize by “same” and “different.” Organizing is a skill that is basic to learning math. It also helps children understand how objects in their own world relate to each other. Quality child care uses many activities to help your child learn about math. Sorting Activities Sorting Sacks and Similar Stuff
Sorting shapes and colors helps children learn to organize by “same” and “different.” Organizing is a skill that is basic to learning math. It also helps children understand how objects in their own world relate to each other. Sorting can be a fun activity to do together. Use sacks, baskets or boxes with colorful shapes to indicate how to sort. Play a game of tossing blocks into baskets or other containers.
When you share sorting activities, your child learns: • colors, numbers and shapes • new words while you sort toys and talk about them • hand-eye coordination • fine motor skills Ask your child to sort straws into clear containers. How many do you think will fit?
Learn more about the importance of play.
• problem-solving when deciding which container to use By sharing activities with your child, you show how important he or she is to you. You share a conversation. You are building your relationship.

HERE IS A LOOK AHEAD! _____________________________ JUNE is all about Dad! Want to share a special message for a special dad? email us, at editor@peekaboonwa.com JULY is all about pets, as well as keeping your kids safe this summer... and all year long! AUGUST is time to head back to school, with our most comprehensive guide to school options yet!
N
o matter how many times you hear the words “I’m pregnant” from a friend, family member, or even perfect stranger, your heart can’t help but swell with joy for the person sharing the big news. The excitement is even greater when it is that person’s first baby, because it means that not only was a new baby created, but also a new mom, too! Becoming a mom is literally the most amazing transformation a human being can undertake (besides becoming a dad, of course – but since this is the Mother’s Day issue, we will focus our attention on Mom). Decades before I would actually get the honor to be called “mom,” I already knew exactly what type of mom I was going to be. I would always: Be the cool, fun mom. Let my kids watch as many cartoons as they wanted. Let them eat wherever, whatever, and whenever they wanted. Let them ride their bikes wherever they wanted. Allow them to skip school in exchange for doing fun things at least a couple times a week. Do all the chores myself in order to let my kids have uninterrupted fun. Watch the same shows my kids did and be up to speed on all the characters’ names and comings and goings. I would never be the mom that: Stays up late waiting for them to come home because they can totally handle themselves. 12 May 2019
Yell at them...like, ever! I’d never turn down playtime for boring things like laundry or doing dishes. Embarrass them in front of their friends (ever!). Never dream of offering advice they didn’t need, because they would already know everything. I made this list when I was quite young – probably 9 or 10 (with a few additions when I was 16 or 17) – so, obviously, the adjustment into the type of mom I would actually become differed dramatically from my initial thoughts. Growing and maturing from tweenhood to adulthood is no small feat, after all! In short, I ended up basically swapping my Nevers for the Always column, and vice-versa. I became a walking contradiction to my previous plans. What’s more, I connect to my own mother even more than I thought possible! After becoming a mom myself, and even more so as my youngest enters her teen years, I have learned why my mom was the way she was (in a good way) and why she said the things she said. For example, I fully understand now why she always had a headache after I had a sleepover, because I now experience post-sleepover crash the next day, too. I also know why my mom stayed up way too late on the front porch, or walked a track through the carpet as she paced back and forth, waiting for me to come home. I hated it then. I didn’t understand
why she worried so much or why she cared so much about laundry, or dishes, or grocery shopping... but I do now. Boy, do I now. And instead of becoming the type of mom I mapped out as a child, I became a version of my own mom (which is way cooler of a person to transform into). Ultimately, in the end, the type of mom you become when you transform through the magic of love is up to you, and your circumstances, and your family. It isn’t easy, and it isn’t predictable, but it is beautiful, and the perfect fit for your little ones who call you the most special name ever (and the one you hear one and a half million times a day) – Mom. To all the moms across Northwest Arkansas: Happy Mother’s Day! Until next time ... Kim Enderle

A morning at the office with Kirsten Blowers Morman, owner of Riffraff, and baby Bo.
Photos by: Sorella Photography
14 May 2019
In February of 2009, while I was still a senior in college, I opened Riffraff with only $100. Many critics thought opening a small business amidst a recession was a terrible idea – and don’t get me wrong, it was not easy – but with hard work and a lot of resilience, I turned this dream into a reality. One relocation, five renovations, and ten years later, I employ over 30 young women all under the age of 27! Together, we work extremely hard while still having a positive and fun atmosphere in the workplace. I love this business and all the trials and triumphs that have come along with it. Riffraff turned 10 this year and we celebrated BIG! I celebrated with my 6-month-old daughter, Hattie Bo, on my hip. In all transparency, becoming a mother and learning the right work/ life/mommying balance was a hard transition for me. No longer was I in charge of my to-do list, my daily schedule or agenda. I had a lovely little baby to dictate all of that. Life quickly became a different kind of busy – a busy that involves a lot of stillness that I wasn’t ready for. My busy-body mind was still racing for several months after Bo arrived with tasks and creative ideas for Riffraff but my body and soul was busy with Bo.
What a beautiful stride this is. I’m here for it. I don’t know about doing or having it all, but I do believe that as long as we’re acting out of our collective highest good, we can have all we desire. We might have to move mountains, get uncomfortable or ask for help, but it’s possible. I’m often asked how I juggle motherhood, my career, relationships etc. To be honest, I just let them merge sometimes. Some days I have to bring my baby to meetings, some days my “me-time” is spent sitting and thinking about how to solve a work problem and often times, at this chapter in life, my love life is spent watching my husband and Bo giggle, play and bond as my heart swells with adoration for him. I try not to apologize for how my worlds collide. It’s life and I’m doing my best.
I’ve spoken to a lot of mamas who also juggled this mind adjustment in the first few months of postpartum. It’s normal to feel this adjustment, because that’s just what it is – an adjustment – a transition of your mental state. Today, Bo is nearly nine months old and I feel like I’ve finally gotten my stride. For some moms, the transition into motherhood is instant. For some like me, it’s a transition full to the brim with love and gratefulness and maybe that’s what really drives you until you get your stride.

Because Moms Can Do Anything By Meagan Ruffing I don’t really know when I started saying the phrase, “Because moms can do anything,” but I do know that I’m glad it’s part of my many ‘mantras’ for being a mom. With Mother’s Day coming up this month, it’s important to not only recognize each other for the tireless work we do raising children, but also for the infinite amount of ways we inspire other human beings. If you’ve forgotten how amazing you are, let me take a moment to remind you. Here is a list of 10 reasons why moms are simply the best.
1. You can multitask like no other. Who
else can make dinner, help a kid study for his spelling bee, talk on the phone, and fix a booboo all at the same time? YOU can!
2. You are stronger than you think. This
year may have thrown you for a loop. Maybe something happened that you didn’t see coming. Did you lose a loved one? Did you go through a divorce? Did you lose a child? A job? A pet? Did you get diagnosed with post-partum depression? Chances are, any one of us reading this has experienced a life-altering moment. But, guess what? You are still here, and you are still standing. You are stronger than you think.
3. You are smart. Do not discount what you
already know. You may have a doctorate in your field of study, or maybe you are a high school graduate who went straight to beauty school. Whatever your trade is, from work-in-the-home mom to work-out-of-the-home mom you are smart. Whether you get a paycheck or help someone else get a paycheck by staying home 16 May 2019
and raising children, you are an intelligent mother.
4. You are beautiful. Those stretchmarks
you see looking back at you in the mirror are a daily reminder of the life you birthed. No stretchmarks? That’s okay... maybe you are one of the few who did not get any, or maybe you brought your child into the world a different way. The point is, you are a mother and are a beautiful one at that. Even on the days when you feel like you are at your ugliest, or when life gets a little too crazy and the gym classes slip out of sight, remind yourself of how beautiful you are.
5. There is no one like you. As moms, we
always wish we could clone ourselves to help with the laundry, and the dishes, and this and that. The reality is, there is only one you... which means there is no one like you. The good news is that you possess something so special that your children can only get from you; a mother’s love.
6. You have eyes in the back of your head. If
you are a newly-minted mom, you will get the hang of saying this all too soon. For all of you veteran moms out there: you know what I am talking about. I don’t know if it is sheer luck that helps us know exactly what our kids are doing at any given moment, but, whatever it is, it allows us to have some sort of sixth sense that makes our kids believe that we really do have eyes in the back of our head.
7. There is no TLC like a mom’s TLC. Moms
have a special touch. Call it what you like, but kids just need their mom sometimes. It is in our
DNA. Our kisses are comforting. Our tears are reviving. Our hugs are healing, and our words are sweet like honey. Kids need tender, loving, care, and moms can dish it out at the drop of a hat.
8. You come up with the most random words.
What’d you say? You thought your 5-year-old wasn’t listening when you let that word slip, but… surprise …she did! No fear. You can whip out an appropriate word that makes total sense, and you can both move on like nothing ever happened.
9. You make things fun. When you give a mom
a few minutes of unplanned time, she will have a brilliant idea all thought up and ready to go. The next thing you know, everyone is laughing, time is flying, and endless memories are being made, all because a mom knew how to make things fun.
10. You are selfless. This is an unspoken, in-
us-when-we-become-mothers type of quality. Selflessness comes with the territory, and requires nothing but love. Just the other day, my daughter and I were on a walk when I noticed she was cold. I offered her my jacket, and she looked up at me, her eyes big and wide, and said,
“But what about you, Mom? Won’t you be cold?” “Well, it hadn’t crossed my mind,” I replied, “but now that you say it, yes, I will be cold. But that’s okay. I would rather have you be warm. I’ll be okay.” And with that, we continued on our walk with big smiles on our faces.
Enjoy Mother’s Day this year knowing how amazing you are. This is your day to relax, unwind, and bask in the love of your family. Happy Mother’s Day to you! And to all of those moms out there who wonder if you can make it through one more sleep-deprived day... yes. Yes, you can. Meagan Ruffing can’t wait to spend this year’s Mother’s Day with her three children, Dylan, Hannah, and Elinor. She’s hoping for breakfast in bed now that her kids are school-aged and know how pour a bowl of cereal. Visit her on Facebook at Dylan, Eli nor, Hann writermeaganruffing to read ah .. .a nd MOM more about parenting.

by Deb Brown Brinlee Hope is a vibrant, smart, strong-willed, loving 6-year-old twin who loves learning, singing, and lots of snuggles. Over the last year, she and her sister have dealt with an autoimmune disorder called Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndrome Type 1 or APS1. This disease has attacked their endocrine gland, thyroid gland and adrenal gland and caused gastrointestinal dysfunction. All this means is that they work harder than most to feel good and live “normal” lives, while taking daily doses of medications and enduring regular appointments for bloodwork. The medications usually keep their electrolytes level and their bodies going. On April 6, 2019, following a brief virus, Brinlee’s numbers scrambled. Her calcium spiked high and sodium dipped dangerously low. Her twin sister, Brielle, was starting her third snack (after all, she says she’s a growing 6-year-old), as Brin napped on the couch. Brinlee suddenly started crying, stood up, and immediately collapsed. I can’t begin to describe the panic that swept over me. My m o m
grabbed her up and immediately started barking orders to grab the keys and meet her at the car. As she drove to the nearest hospital, I sat in the back seat, holding my precious Brinlee. I talked to her, rubbed her face, and tried to reassure her that she was okay, but I honestly didn’t know. She was rigid, stiff, and staring into the distance. A second wave of panic covered me like a thick wet blanket as I realized she was turning an ashy white color.. She was not breathing. After what seemed like an eternity, she finally gasped for air, but it was still faint. I cried to my mom to drive faster. The drive to the hospital took less than five minutes. When the car finally stopped, my mom grabbed my baby girl and ran her into the ER. She was lifeless. The events that followed over the next couple of hours are somewhat of a blur. I stood nearby my Brin as ten ER specialists worked to stabilize her body. I held my own breath as I watched them pump on her chest while doing CPR. She was breathing again, but it was faint. In the meantime, the main doctor asked that someone reach out to ACH and get Angel One in the air – their ETA would be 60 minutes. My baby girl was still not stable when the ACH team arrived. It would be another 45 minutes before they felt safe to transport her. Finally, they loaded Brinlee and her daddy into the helicopter. I stood there, surrounded by family,
20 May 2019
yet feeling so alone while watching them lift off and fly away with my baby girl. My heart was breaking. The week that followed was filled with a rollercoaster of emotions, and has continued to this day. My mom documented most of the week through Facebook updates for our friends and family. It is our hope that through sharing we can build a great army of prayer warriors for Brinlee’s recovery, and raise awareness about APS1.
April 6, 2019 Prayers for this one please. Brin had a terrible seizure this afternoon. She’s still critical and about to fly to ACH. Please, please pray for her now, and for the family traveling down.
April 7, 2019 Brin is finally stable. Most of her numbers have leveled out. They are watching her liver, checking her heart, and doing a brain scan tomorrow morning. She is on the ventilator and pretty sedated, but she does respond to pain.
April 8, 2019 Today was SLOW and hard. I was so disappointed when she didn’t wake up this morning, but then, a
little bit ago, she moved her finger for me, so the emotional roller coaster continues. She has fluttered her eyes a little and peeked at me once. She’s not waking up completely, but is a little more aware that there’s a tube down her throat, so she struggled with it. Her numbers and most organs are looking better. Tonight’s prayer is for favorable results from the MRI today. We should get those tomorrow morning. Thanks so much for your sweet thoughts and prayers. They are definitely being heard. God is so good.
April 9, 2019 I’m counting the minutes until I can go back and see Brin. I have to be honest... I’m worried, but I have hope. I can’t imagine being here in this place in any of the situations I’ve seen this week

without the kind of hope that only God can provide. He’s not promising that everything is going to be easy or perfect, but He is promising that H e is here, and He can carry Brin through this. My anxiety keeps wanting to run wild, but I’m praying for peace that only He can provide, whatever happens. There IS Hope in Him and in every situation. First, thank you so much for your prayers this week. They’ve been felt by each of us and we’ve seen miracles as they’ve happened.. God is good! Brin is still stable. They’ve started to work her down on the vent, so, hopefully, they will take the tube out tomorrow morning. It’s turned down, so she’s breathing on her own, but she’s pretty sedated. Her liver and kidneys are looking better. Her brain does have some damage, but they think it will heal some, though she may need intense therapy. They’re not giving a definite prognosis on that until she wakes up. We need prayers for tomorrow on an easy removal of the ventilator tube without trauma to Brin. Her body has been through a lot this week. Thank you again! Stay tuned.... miracles are happening.
April 11, 2019 They finally took her off of the ventilator! She’s still getting the hang of swallowing, coughing, and breathing on her own. Now, we wait. We have to wait and see what she can do over the next few days. My biggest concern is making sure it doesn’t happen again. She’s had a few “episodes” that are similar to the event that started all of this. It’s been determined that these events were not seizures. I’m wondering what that was last Saturday and how we can make sure she’s okay. So, we are praying for clarification on this, as well as good results as Brin starts to be less sedated.
April 13, 2019 Brin update... This has been a hard day for our girl. Brinlee’s immediate prayer need is relief from the “storming” in her body, as her brain works to retrigger or rewire itself. I’m so thankful for all that God has carried and healed her through so far. Her other prayer need is that her breathing will slow to normal levels.
April 15, 2019 It’s hard to describe what our girl is going through. She’s still experiencing the “storming.” We have no idea how long this is going to go on. She gets really uncomfortable and upset during these storms. Her breathing has slowed a little. It seems like she feels better in the morning than the afternoon. Today they gave her a little Valium to settle her down. If they can get her respirations under control and storms slowed, they may move her to the rehab wing. They want to start teaching her as soon as they can. Prayers are making a big difference. Keep them coming. Watching her through the storms, waiting to see what will happen, and the absolute uncertainty of it all make it hard for this momma to breath sometimes. I have no idea how long or how much therapy it will take to get our Brinlee back to some kind of normal, but I do know this… Brinlee Hope is a vibrant, smart, strong-willed, loving 6-yearold, and I have all the time in the world to help her through this. The latest update: Brin is out of the PICU and in a regular room. Brinlee wakes up and occasionally follows us with her eyes. Her heart rate went a little crazy high when her sister visited last weekend so we are pretty sure she recognized her. We pray that once the meds are out of her system, she will begin to talk to us and move around more on her own. Thank you in advance for your prayers for our girl! Go Pro
H
ello May, and, with all respect to December, this is the start of the real silly season. You know, the convergence of baseball, soccer, lacrosse and pretty much every other sport, since now they are all pretty much year-round activities! They have to be, due to all the competition in competition these days... especially ‘round these parts. Having had the opportunity to coach (and the curse to ref) munchkins for over a decade here in NWA, I can tell you there’s no shortage of desire to play. And there’s also no shortage of super high expectations by both players… and parents. Case in point: each season, when we have our introductory “get to know you” team meeting, I always ask players what they want to be when they grow up. At least half say they want to “go pro” in their sport of choice. I don’t smirk or squash their dreamy dreams, but hope they understand the rough reality of going pro. As former Bentonville Basketball Coach Jason McMahan used to say, unless you hit the “genetic lottery” your chances of making it on a professional sports team are about the same as winning the actual lottery. Meaning, if Mom was an Olympic decathlete and Dad is 6’8,” your chances are way better than if Mama’s a Walmart buyer and Pops is a benchwarmer in the over-40 softball league. But, back to the players’ hopes to go pro. I get it, and I dig it, and I hope they make it – and also hope they remember Coach Ben when they sign that bajillion dollar contract (just kidding). Unfortunately, this last youth basketball season, something changed that kind of bummed me out. In the midst of the “go pro” vibe, there emerged a bit of a “go con” mentality. Let me explain. The old song says, “Root, root, root for the home team,” but, this season, I spied with my little eyes (and big ears) a pack of parents focused on cheering against the other team – not for their team. The kids are out there trying their best to excel, and, hopefully, go pro, while the adults (cough, cough) 24 May 2019
were focused on berating the opponent. Why did they decide to “go con?” This phenomena boggled my mind a bit – and yeah, I know, that’s not all that difficult. I mean, these are the mature folks (still coughing) that throw down a Benjamin ($100) or so on an Aaron Judge jersey to support their beloved (AKA evil empire) Yankees or burn their super high retail LeBron James Cavalier uniform (or Heat uniform, or older Cavalier uniform, or Laker uniform... given this year’s debacle). Laying down that kind of scratch means they must fully understand how to support THEIR team, right? So, what’s with the angst for the opponent? Why don’t we all go pro, meaning cheer on our team, instead of con, against the other? I’m not much of a news guy, be it cable, digital or social, and my general view on politics is: “I know that I don’t know.” However, I do see that the current move is to mangle the message of your rival rather than shout out your stance. Meaning, be very vocal about why the other guy is wrong instead of explaining why you are right. Going con vs. going pro. I guess that’s okay between adults (more coughing), but when this kind of behavior leaks onto the fields and courts of youth sports, it gets tricky. How do you explain to a fifth grader that, despite what he is screaming, the dude in the front row doesn’t really want him to trip over the free throw line and bust his front teeth out – he’s just hoping for a turnover so his son’s team can get the ball back? And later, perhaps the lady that screamed “MISS!” at the top of her lungs when a girl who hasn’t had a shot all year finally gets to the free throw line was just requesting a KISS from the chap next to her. Somehow, someway, society has evolved, or maybe regressed, to a point where someone else’s failures are the focus of our happiness. I’m not preaching here, I’m guilty as charged, and, as Grandma used to say, when you point one finger at someone else, there are three pointing back at you (go ahead and try it). My kids have heard me say far too many times that “I’d rather see Kansas lose than
Kansas State win” (sorry SEC fans, I’m from Big 12 country, but I’m sure you get it). This anti-message sells, too. Go down to your local Wallyworld during football season, and I’ll bet you’ll find an ample supply of t-shirts that say “BEAT TEXAS” (even though they don’t play them this year) or “MY FAVORITE TEAM IS ARKANSAS AND WHOEVER IS PLAYING ‘BAMA.”
So, long story short, I’m going to try and make sure I go ‘pro’ and hope it rubs off on the tikes. Show them how to scream for their team until their throats are throttled, and always go pro in their support. I’m still not going to let them wear red and blue (the colors of the University of Kansas), however; some things are just sacred.

W O M E N ’ S H E A LT H A S S O C I AT E S M O T H E R ’ S D AY G I V E AWAY Women’s Health Associates and Peekaboo Magazine wanted to do something special for a special mom this Mother’s Day, so we asked readers to submit their nominations for a mom who could use a little extra TLC. The winner was Tammy Hendrix, and we were so excited to shower her with positive energy and services from Women’s Health Associates.
Nomination Letter I’d love to start my Valentine’s Day off by nominating my beautiful, selfless, and incredibly amazing momma, Tammy Hendrix, for the pampering mom giveaway. I’ve never done one of these before, but felt compelled to do so when it comes to bragging on my mother! Where do I begin, though? She’s the best mom my siblings and I could have ever been blessed with! She goes above and beyond every single day to make sure we’re all happy and know we’re loved. Every night is filled with a kiss, cuddles, and “I love you!” Every morning consists of smiles, laughs, and an “I love you!” Not a day goes by where she doesn’t reassure each one of us that we’re beautiful, smart, important, and very loved. My little sister has PCDH19, which is a genetic seizure disorder, and she has spurts of seizures lasting anywhere from 30 seconds to 120+ seconds that can keep her out of school, hospitalize her, and affect her everyday routines. My mother has been there since the beginning, doing her absolute best to understand, comfort, and support my little sister. She’s become my sister’s biggest advocate, taking her to every appointment and children’s hospital event, and stays incredibly involved in the community trying to understand epilepsy. She’s 100 percent dedicated to being a voice in a silent, scary world. She’s the most influential hardworking woman I’ve met. I’m crying as I write this, because if I could give my mother the entire world, I don’t think that’d be enough, because she deserves more. She’s my best friend, biggest supporter, and the most incredible woman I know. I strive every day to make her proud and get myself to a spot in life where I can give her everything she’s given us and then some. There are many amazing and selfless mommas out there, and, of course, I’m partial saying mine is the best, but I truly believe I was blessed with the BEST momma ever. I can only hope you’ll pick us and help me give my mom a day she deserves! I love her to the ends of the universe and back a thousand times, and would love to be able to shower her with a little bit of self pampering and love she most definitely deserves! Thank you for taking the time to hear me brag on her and for doing this kind of giveaway! It’s awesome and something to truly enjoy. Tegan R. Hendrix

winning the contest to get pampered at Women’s Health Associates. Hesitation and fear of the unknown are two ways to describe how I was feeling when I walked in the doors to meet Jamie for the first time. Her smile and excitement quickly eased any doubts as to whether or not this was going to be a great, lifechanging experience I was about to encounter with her. I feel as though Jamie and I have been life-long friends based off of her genuine love for what she does and how she made and continues to make me feel now after having different types of facial injections. A life-long friend that is there to remind me of how beautiful I am inside and out. She kept telling me “You deserve this! Enjoy it!” Her enthusiasm and joy to be a part of this was so comforting. I gave in, let my guard down, and after the first visit said, “Do your magic! Whatever you want to do is fine by me! I do deserve this!” I got to be pampered and I feel a new energy, inner peace, happiness all around me, and stronger confidence within me. My family and I can take on the world with Za’Nyla and her PCDH19 Epilepsy. I can’t thank Jamie and Women’s Health Associates enough for giving me this great pampering experience and being a part of my family now! It’s truly amazing how a little Botox, Juvederm lip fillers, cheek fillers, and a dermaplane facial can make someone feel! I’m enjoying daily self-love and feel great being a mom to three beautiful people! Thank you again for all of the blessings that this experience has given me! - Tammy Hendrix
T R E AT M E N T S A N D S E R V I C E S F O R TA M M Y She was treated with Botox for softening of fine lines and wrinkles. She was also treated with the Juvederm family of fillers including Voluma, Juvederm Ultra Plus, and Volbella. Voluma is used to add volume back into the cheek area which can flatten as we age. Juvederm Ultra plus was used to soften lines around her nose and mouth. Volbella was used in Tammy’s lips to give her some fullness back as we all experience lip thinning over time. At the end she was given a luxury facial with dermaplane.

We thank you for the late-night feedings, the early mornings, the packed lunches, the days at the park, the endless rides to soccer practice, the cheering at dance recitals, the help with math homework, the late nights at games, the weekends traveling for sports, and all the music lessons. We thank you for being a foundational rock, for your never-ending encouragement, and for your hands to help us up when things are not so great. We thank you for getting us turned back around to greatness. We thank you for your constant sacrifice to better the lives of your children. We understand the working late, working multiple jobs, working on holidays, saving for trips, saving for college, or saving for that special birthday gift. We know what discipline and dedication that takes, and we thank you. Motherhood is not always beautiful and blissful. There are difficult lessons to learn and sad conversations to be had. We know this is all to help your children become better human beings. To you, the mothers of NWA, you are appreciated more than you know, and your children are stronger because of you. We know that not every day can be your best, and you will not always feel or look your best. We just want you to know, that to us, you are, and always will be, perfection.

Interview with Lauren Chao on selling their home in Downtown Bentonville Q: Tell me a little about you and your family.
A: Hi, I am Lauren! I’ve been married to my
husband Michael for just over six years. We have two great children, Hayes, who is 3, and Carter, who is 1. We also have our very first baby – our Great Dane, who is 10 years old! Q: When and why did you move to Bentonville?
A: We moved to Bentonville in February of 2013.
This was just two weeks after we got married. We moved from Austin, Texas. People thought we were crazy to leave Austin, but we soon found that we absolutely loved Bentonville! We moved to Bentonville for our jobs, which happens to a lot of people here. Q: What do you like most about Bentonville?
A: We love how easy it is to live here. Because
we lived downtown, we were close to everything that we needed. We were able to walk or ride our bikes to parks, restaurants, farmers markets, schools and even Walmart. We made some of the most caring and welcoming friends. We never felt like an outsider and were able to connect to the community right away. The city has very generous donors who make Bentonville an
amazing place to live and thrive. Of all the places we’ve lived or will live, we believe that Bentonville will always be our favorite. Q: What made you decide to live in downtown Bentonville?
A: When we first moved here, we rented a house
for a year to see where we wanted to buy. We fell in love with the downtown area and realized that we wanted to live there. We love the ability to walk to the farmers market, coffee shops, restaurants and parks. We also love the access to the bike trails. It was so fun to be able to walk to see world class art at Crystal Bridges. It was also convenient to be able to walk or ride our bikes to work everyday. We also knew once we had kids, we’d love the ability to walk to parks and schools. Q: What were some of your favorite places in Bentonville?
A: Our favorite restaurant was The Hive. We did
some of our HGTV show there, and it quickly became our favorite spot. Our favorite coffee shop is Onyx. We would walk there all the time. The great thing is that we are still able to get our coffee from there! We order it and make it at home! Our favorite activity was the farmers market. Walking there each Saturday was part of our routine, and we loved everything about it. We also loved the Run Bentonville Race Series. It had great races
and a very encouraging environment. Q: Now, when you bought your house, you became reality TV stars on HGTV. How did that come about?
A: Actually, this wasn’t our first time on reality
photos by Reb Bloodworth
TV. Michael previously had been on the show Wipe Out. He thought it would be fun to do our house hunt on HGTV. He sent a proposal to the show, and they loved it. Next thing we knew, we were on HGTV House Hunters! It was a fun experience to get a behind-the-scenes look at how that show is made. Q: Tell me about the house that you ended up buying in downtown Bentonville.
A: We knew that we wanted to live in downtown
but also knew that we couldn’t afford some of the newer homes. We decided to look for a fixer upper that would put us in the area that we want. We found the perfect home on a quiet street that was just right for us. The home had a great history. The previous owner was Bob Chaney, the voice of the Razorbacks. If anyone knows the Razorbacks, he is a household name! Q: When you decided to move, how did you put your house on the market?
A: Unfortunately, we had to relocate to another
city for Michael’s job. We hated to leave Bentonville, but knew it was best for our family. We initially tried to sell our house For Sale By Owner (FSBO). We went down this path because we had so many friends who seemed interested in buying our home. We had a lot of interest, and even an offer, but we couldn’t get them to finalize. What with having two young kids, a husband relocating and keeping our home “show” worthy, we knew we needed help. We didn’t want to waste any more time – we wanted the house to be SOLD! Q: Why did you end up going with Midtown Associates?
real estate located in downtown Bentonville. They are very active in the community and have a great reputation. We are so happy that we used Midtown Associates. They were able to get our home under contract in under one week for the same price we wanted to sell it for ourselves. We had multiple offers! Debbie was able to navigate the process and successfully have our house SOLD in about a month. Incredible – especially factoring in the time and energy we wasted trying to sell it ourselves! Q: Would you recommend using Midtown Associates to friends?
A: Yes, of course. They are professional and
friendly. Their motto is “Connecting Northwest Arkansas one family at a time,” and they truly live it. They have an unmatched passion for the area! Q: What advice would you offer to other people looking to buy or sell their home?
A: We would say make sure the home has a layout you like, but in a location that enables you to live the lifestyle that you want. When you are making improvements, do them well so that the future residents will be happy. Find a trustworthy agent who you can trust and communicates well with your best interest at heart.
A: We met Debbie from Midtown Associates
while we were trying to sell our house by ourselves. She was bright and cheery and seemed to want the best for her buyer. While they ended up not wanting to buy our home, we knew that we wanted her for our realtor. We also love Midtown Associates. They are a local boutique

. Q . A . F By Ann Meythaler We spend a lot of time sharing our hearts about foster care, but realized it’s also important to slow down and just cover some of the basics... so here are a few of our favorite “Foster Parent Frequently Asked Questions.”
Can I open for just adoption? Or just foster care?
3) Fictive Kin and Provisional Homes: These homes are related to or know
the children before they come into care. Because DCFS would love to keep from retraumatizing children by placing them with strangers, there is a way to fast track family members and other adults with a significant relationship with the children (typically teachers, coaches, and family friends).
Yes! There are a few different types of homes:
Can single people foster and adopt?
1) Foster Homes: These homes will take
Yes! Single parents are welcome to open their
in children whose case is typically still heading toward reunification. Many times, these children are coming straight to the foster home after being removed from their homes – they’re scared, and don’t come with a lot of additional details about their lives. Children of all ages come into care and need temporary foster homes. The greatest need is for homes that can take sibling groups and older children.
2) Adoptive Homes: These homes do
not feel called to reunification scenarios, and are open to taking in children whose parental rights have already been terminated. Much like foster homes, the need here is homes who can take children over the age of 6 and sibling groups.
homes to foster care and adoption.
Do you get a choice of what kids you take into your home? Yes, you always have the option to say yes or no to any placement DCFS calls about. Each foster home works through a three-page preference checklist as part of their certification process and those preferences are recorded in their file. However, due to lack of available homes for sibling groups, children over the age of 6, and children with medical and behavioral needs, caseworkers will call every home looking for
placement even if the child they’re calling about doesn’t fit the preferences of the home they’re calling. Often times foster homes will say yes to a placement that isn’t within their specified parameters.
What did their parents do/ What happened to their parents? Children come into foster care for a lot of different reasons. Foster parents aren’t at liberty to discuss case specifics. Addiction, brokenness, and stress can cause people to make poor (and often heartbreaking) choices sometimes. The parents’ stories are theirs to tell, not ours.
How can you love them like your own kids and then be okay with them going back to their parents? Also phrased as “I could never love them and give them back.”
Answer? We’re heartless robots... Kidding! There are really two truths here.
The first is that sometimes you don’t bond well with a particular placement, but you still see it through until the end of the case, and breathe a sigh of relief when the child is reunified with their family or moves on to an adoptive home. The second, more common outcome is that yes, it hurts. As foster parents, you know from the beginning that reunification and restoration of their biological family is the goal of the case. Children from hard places need to know they’re safe and worthy of love. Teaching them this means that the emotionally healthy adults in their lives are going to bond with them to show them that safety and healing can be found in bonding with others and trusting others to meet their needs. This also means that we’re setting ourselves up for heartache if the goal or reunification is reached… but healing the hurt experienced by these kids is so much more important than that.
Turn the page...

The pain is worth healing their little hearts and providing them with a temporary home until they can go back to their family. It’s part of the sacrifice we’re called to when we open our homes to foster care.
Which ones are your real kids? They’re all real kids, actually. Due to the requirement of maintaining strict confidentiality, foster parents are not allowed to disclose which children are in foster care. You never know whose cousin’s hairdresser’s sister’s child may be in care. It’s a small world, and privacy of such delicate matters is worth preserving.
How long do they stay with you? There isn’t a simple answer for this. Sometimes they’re in our homes for a few days or a couple of weeks until a family member or family friend can open their home to take them in. Sometimes they’re with us for 6-12 months until they are able to safely return to their parents. Sometimes they stay 12-24 months until an adoptive home can be identified for them. And sometimes... we adopt them and they stay forever.
incredible teaching opportunity for us as parents. We get to show them how to walk out the gospel within the walls of our homes. We teach patience, forgiveness, and how to help hurting hearts heal. Foster care has made our children more compassionate, understanding, and selfless.
How do I prepare my bio kids? For most of us, we just told our children that there were kids in our community who needed a safe place to stay for a little while and that they’d eventually be moving back in with their families. Keep the information age-appropriate and pretty basic. You may also explain a little bit about how scared these children must be to not be with their families and how that fear might come out as anger and disobedience. You can also explain why it might look like foster children are disciplined differently (because they’re not used to structure or discipline like your kids are).
How do I protect my bio kids? The training required to become a certified family has an entire session on this topic. We’ll talk to you about safety plans and good rules to have for each room of your house so everyone can be safe.
How are your kids handling foster care?
I know it’s important to have a good support system. How do I do that?
This one also varies. Our kids are human. And, unfortunately, they’re not even full-grown mature humans. They’re going to struggle with sharing their parents, moving in with children they don’t know, and witnessing the effects of trauma, drug exposure, and abuse first hand. This turns in to an
It’s really imperative to talk to your network of friends and family about what you’re going to be doing and practical ways they can help. Most people are terrible at anticipating the needs of others and just showing up. Unfortunately, most people are ALSO terrible at asking for and

accepting help. Not everyone is called to open their home to foster care and adoption. When you reach out to your network of people, you’re inviting them to join you in this ministry, you’re giving them an opportunity to be good stewards of the things they have, and you’re letting them participate in foster care at the level they’re able to at this time.
How much did it cost? Ah, one of my favorite questions. There are costs associated with opening a foster or adoptive home – training materials and equipment cost money, trainers cost money, home studies cost money, staff hours spent certifying homes and walking them through every step of the process cost money. DCFS funds cover home study fees and licensing fees and The CALL relies on the generosity of donors to help us continue to certify foster homes free of charge. The only costs incurred by the foster home are whatever may be needed to bring the home up to licensing standards (fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, ways to lock up medication, etc). The cost of finalizing an adoption through foster care is the cost of a new birth certificate: $27. Adoption through foster care in the state of
Arkansas costs TWENTY-SEVEN DOLLARS, y’all. We like to travel. Can we take foster children with us? What about sports? Music lessons? Yes! Absolutely! You can and SHOULD take the foster children with you on vacations and family trips if you’re taking your own children. Foster parents are encouraged to give their foster children all the same experiences they’re providing for their own children. This goes for extracurricular activities as well.
Will you get to adopt them? Another complicated answer. Most people assume that foster parents are doing this because they want to adopt. Sometimes that is the case, but most of the time the motivation for fostering is the desire to give back and to serve hurting children in our community. They’re fully supportive of the Department’s goal of reunification and aren’t looking to adopt unless/until that reunification isn’t possible. When Plan A falls through, foster parents are almost always given the first choice for adopting the children in their homes.
For children battling a critical illness, a wish is more than a dream. It can be a turning point that can give them the emotional and physical strength to keep going.

By Chantel Shuler It’s no secret that a revolution of women’s empowerment is happening right here in front of us, and from that comes the idea of “Mom and So Much More.” It’s been three years since the conception of what was previously called, “Mom but So Much More,” and a name change was in order. The name change highlights the endless options, passions, aspects, and abilities that moms have, and that being a mom isn’t a limitation, but rather an attribute of potential. “Mom and So Much More will have its third annual fashion show on Friday, July 19, 2019, at the Osage House in Rogers. VIP entry begins at 5:30 p.m., and General Admission entry begins at 6:15 p.m. This will be one of the first events for this new Northwest Arkansas venue. What started as an idea of a small fashion show fundraiser for the local women’s shelter has now become a movement of its own here in NWA. This fashion show and social media movement 44 May 2019
not only focuses on empowering women, but, more specifically, on empowering mothers. The fashion show doubled its first year’s earnings and brought in $25,000 for the women’s shelter last year. This year, the goal is to match those earnings for the Peace at Home Family Shelter. 100% of all the proceeds are donated to helping the shelter provide a safe space for those affected by domestic violence. Catching fire from the spark of the surge of girl power in 2016, the first “Mom but So Much More” show was created by the local GAP Kids & Baby store in Rogers. Chantel Shuler, the store manager at the time, decided to combine her passions and that of her employees into something that would help raise funds for those impacted by domestic violence. The store team combined their strengths of social media, community involvement, and local store events into what quickly became a full-fledged regional event. The Fashion Show encompasses women empowerment, embraces
equality and diversity, showcases girl power, and celebrates motherhood. This year’s show will feature both national, iconic brands as well as local boutiques, showcasing why each brand is passionate about the cause. The fifty models that will be walking the runway have one specific thing in common: they are moms living here in Northwest Arkansas. More than that, the models highlight how diverse the lives and passions of mothers are. As they walk the runway, their accomplishments, strengths, inner beauty, ownerships, passions, and individuality is shared over the microphone, with only a small nod to their actual outfits. Mom and So Much More includes women who are considered “inspirational or influential” in their communities. Their inspiration or influence could be within their own household, or nationwide. The mission is to show the community that Northwest Arkansas moms are so much more than a “mom” to everyone around them, while still celebrating their motherhood and recognizing the crucial job they do in raising children, encouraging moms everywhere to embrace their passions while being the best mom they can be. Guests and models alike join as one, coming together to support the women, moms,
and families in need at the shelter. Businesses from all over Northwest Arkansas have jumped at the chance to participate in a cause that not only celebrates moms, but also contributes to funding the shelter that is so critical to our community. They have provided food, beverages, silent auction items, gift bags for the models, and countless other donations, without which the show couldn’t be as successful as it is. 100 percent of all money received through ticket sales, silent auction, and donations goes directly to the shelter. The organization is continuously looking for model nominations, moms to feature on social media, volunteers, donors, and sponsors. Tickets can be found on Facebook or Instagram, @momandsomuch. Approximately 200 General Admission tickets available, and approximately 100 VIP admission tickets available. Event offerings include various vendor samples, local business booths, light hors d’oeuvres, cash bar, guest speakers, silent auction, photo booth, and the fashion show.
Join us for an ultimate mom’s night out, celebrating this thing we call motherhood, raising one another up and raising funds for the shelter.
March of Dimes and Willow Creek Women’s Clinic Announce first Joint Supportive Pregnancy Care Program First Site in Arkansas Launching in Johnson, Offering an Innovative Model of Group Prenatal Care March of Dimes recently announced that Willow Creek Women’s Clinic was the first Supportive Pregnancy Care (SPC) site in the state of Arkansas, designed to help improve mother and baby health during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and infancy. Willow Creek Women’s Clinic is located at Willow Creek Women’s Hospital, 4301 Greathouse Springs Road in Johnson. The March of Dimes SPC program offers prenatal care in a group setting with moms-to-be of similar gestational ages. At each group session, women learn to perform their own self-care by measuring and recording their own weight and blood pressure with the help of a facilitator. An obstetrician meets individually with each woman to perform a physical assessment and discuss specific concerns in a private area within the group space. During each SPC visit, women have more time with their health care providers than they would during conventional individual prenatal checkups, and benefit not only from prenatal care education, but also from the vital social and emotional support they receive from other mothers. 46 May 2019
The first SPC program will start in June. Interested women – who will be in their first trimester of pregnancy in June – should call (479) 757-1730 for more information or to enroll. “We are thrilled to be Arkansas’ first site for this innovative program that will benefit both mothers and babies,” said Dr. Serena Pierson, an Obstetrician-Gynecologist speaking on behalf of Willow Creek Women’s Clinic. “The SPC environment can empower women to take control of their pregnancy care and fosters relationships that can last throughout their pregnancies and beyond. National research has shown that a group setting for prenatal care is associated with fewer preterm births, reduced incidence of low-birthweight infants, and shorter neonatal intensive care stays.” March of Dimes shares a passion and commitment to improving maternal health and prenatal outcomes, believing that an innovative approach like the SPC program can help play a key role in breaking down some of the barriers these expectant mothers encounter during their pregnancy—hopefully leading to fewer preterm births.
Multiple studies have demonstrated that group prenatal care: + Reduces preterm birth and rapid repeat pregnancy + Improves psychological outcomes including readiness for labor and delivery + Increases rates of breastfeeding initiation + Decreases rates of small-for-gestational age babies + Reduces health care costs + Empowers women and increases patient and provider satisfaction with care
“We know that limited access to quality healthcare during pregnancy, exacerbated by racial and ethnic disparities, plays a decisive role in the rising rate of preterm birth in the United States.
In fact, women of color are up to 50 percent more likely to deliver prematurely, said Dr. Sameer Wagle, a Neonatologist and Perinatal Medicine Specialist who serves on the Board for the local March of Dimes chapter and also practices at Willow Creek Women’s Hospital. The program is open to any expecting mother interested in participating, regardless of insurance coverage. One in 10 babies in the United States is born prematurely (before 37 weeks of pregnancy), meaning that the U.S. has one of the worst preterm birth rates of any high-income country in the world. The 2018 Premature Birth Report Card from March of Dimes, released on November 1, shows that preterm birth rate rose again last year for the third year in a row. Babies who survive an early birth often have lifelong health issues such as learning disabilities, vision and hearing loss. Even infants born just a few weeks early have a greater risk of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), feeding difficulties, temperature instability, which can increase the risk for hypothermia, jaundice and delayed brain development.

The Happiest Sad:
A Co n tin u in g J our n e y By: Brittany Whatley The last time I was able to share my story was in October of 2016. I went into detail of my journey as a birth mom and my adoption story. As this is a continuing journey, I would love for you to check out that story first if you missed it. www.peekaboonwa.com/its-the-happiest-sad — Excerpt from October 2016 article “I was induced in January 2006 to ensure their presence at the hospital. That day held the most deep-rooted sadness I have ever felt. She was a beautiful baby. I wasn’t allowed to hold her, but I was able to meet her finally that night. There were many fears from the adoptive family of me bonding with her and changing my mind, but they had no idea that my mind wasn’t allowed to be changed. Upon leaving the hospital a few days later, we all cried and prayed. I was able to kiss her on the head before they drove away with my baby and my heart. The weeks and months that followed are really all a blur. I was adjusting back at home, being home-schooled, and struggling with who I was now. I couldn’t see any of my old friends or have a social life, and that was really hard on me as a person, as well as a teenager. I was suffering, and another decision was made by them to send me away to a Christian boarding school for a year. I think they thought this would help me refocus.”
I closed my last article with a move to Colorado that was days away from taking place. I thought Colorado would hold a lot of restoration of relationships, allow me to work with both sides of adoption through the company I’d work for, and, honestly, allow me to grow my wallet a little bit. Let’s just say, however, that none of those expected outcomes came to pass, but I was so thankful to be welcomed back into NWA with open arms. Unexpectedly, coming home had its challenges, but I was given a bonus family that I never thought I needed. The Harmon family opened their home to me, but most importantly their hearts. Mr. Harmon was the youth pastor 54 May 2019
at Cross Church in Springdale, and I was given a chance to work there as an assistant. I wasn’t qualified, but they gave me a chance, and I’m so glad they did because I wouldn’t have met them without that opportunity. They even gifted me with an adoption contract of my own, saying that they were committed to being my people for the rest of my life. That’s something I’ve never had. People come and go constantly. I’m forever grateful to them for helping write my story. I’m a better person because of my Harmon family. I had always had a dream of going to cosmetology school – something on that “one day” list we all have. In 2017, I started the year-long journey. I made some of my dearest friends, and, even better than that, I was there for the next part of my adoption story. I was a few months from graduation, browsing social media, and saw a post from “J”’s adoptive mom. We had only semi-recently become Facebook friends, and I was always very careful to not like or comment on anything. I just wanted to observe from the outside. I was so thankful to be able to see all of the pictures or funny stories of “J,” and never wanted to do anything to mess up or overstep this privilege. The post I saw was about their family getting ready for a family vacation. I chuckled, because I was also getting ready for a family vacation with my Harmons. We go to Disney every year, and we were just a few days from leaving. I didn’t think much more about it and went on about my day. A few days later, I saw another post. This time, it stopped me in my tracks. This post talked about the weather where they live and the weather in ORLANDO… where they would be vacationing with their whole
family. I just sat there, looking at my screen, feeling like I couldn’t even blink my eyes. I was shocked. I was a few days away from making this SAME trip, and was flooded with excitement and questions. When I tell you we went to the same place at the same time, I just hope your heart is beating as fast as mine. I could write a book on how all of the story worked out, but, honestly, just know it’s nothing short of Him continuing to write my story. A few messages were exchanged between my bonus Mom, Jackie, and my adoptive family, (because you know I was too scared to say anything!) and we all were able to meet. In Disney World, of all places... Jesus is funny sometimes. My Harmons were able to walk out this story with me. It was such relief to have them there, to have family there. It wasn’t quite the time or the place to spring up a meeting with my “J,” but it was the most perfect reunion between her parents and I. I hadn’t seen these faces since I was 16, leaving a hospital, and now, at 28, I felt like a totally different person. Let’s be honest... I am a different person. There were so many emotions in those few hours we sat across from one another. Truthfully, as soon as I saw their faces I burst into tears. Our meeting only lasted those few hours, but felt like a blink after all these years. We were able to go back to the beginning of our journey and ask/answer questions we have had over the years. They told me such sweet stories of my girl, and the person she is. It is the strangest feeling to know there is another mini version of you out there that you have yet to meet. They assured me that they are committed to us knowing one another when the time is right, if that’s what she desires. My heart swells at that statement, and also fills with doubt. I am so thankful to them and grateful for the models they are to her. I meet so many adoptees that have no desire to meet their birth parents, and they have valid reasons. I just have to leave it up to Him and have faith that because of their commitment one day, I’ll meet my “J” once again. Since this day in November 2017, her family and I have been able to stay in contact a little more. I even like a few posts here and there – baby steps! I have finished up my cosmetology course and have started my own hair business. As with any business, the first year has had its ups and downs, but I have loved being able to pour back into the community. It has been such a joy to mix
my passion for making my clients look and feel beautiful with volunteering around NWA. I have truly loved NWA for many reasons, but especially for the amount of resources available. Through churches, non-profits, or state programs… there’s truly so much support around every corner. I have been connected with so many people here. I’d like to talk about one of my favorite connections, Shared Beginnings, because I wish so badly that I had had these women in my corner 13 years ago. I was invited to a Birth Mom Brunch last year and was able to meet other moms right here in NWA who have chosen life for their children through adoption. It was the first time for me to attend any event like this. I was surrounded by strangers, but felt understood, supported, and loved, all at the same time. At this event we wrote letters to our child and did a balloon release. It was such a special and emotional time. I wanted to know more about this organization, and I knew I wanted to pour back into something I didn’t have all those years ago. Shared Beginnings' mission is to provide support, protect, and serve expectant mothers. They work to help girls just like my past self achieve their personal goals. This includes getting a driver’s license, finishing up high school/getting a GED, making a resume, finding a job, and so much more. The women that work here truly care about these young women’s success – beyond their pregnancy and adoption plan – and strive to remove barriers to make these goals obtainable. Remembering the lack of support in my life back in 2016, I love being a small part of making a difference in these young women’s stories. Some stories are hard and messy, but are also so beautiful and written by Him. I’m so thankful for my “happiest sad” and its continuing journey.

FACTS Lay the Groundwork for Teen Dating Rules Early By Dwain Hebda
Among the many milestones that brings a parent bittersweet emotions is a son or daughter starting to date. Anyone who has been through it can attest to the concern this phase of life brings, to say nothing of waiting up nights to ensure curfew is met and boundaries are followed. There are fewer kids dating these days; according to childtrends.org, only 15 percent of twelfth-graders dated more than once a week in 2016, half of what it was in 1976. Meanwhile, the percentage of kids who report not dating at all in that age category tripled over the same period, from 15 percent to 45 percent. But none of that really matters to the parents of a teen who is going out on a Friday or Saturday night with a significant other. Peekaboo asked Morgan Thomason with Chenal Family Therapy in Rogers for her five best suggestions to help parents navigate this tricky yet largely inevitable fact of life. One | Create a safe space for communication Let your teen know that you respect that they’re growing up and that you want them to have freedoms that are 56 May 2019
appropriate for their age. Commit to creating a safe environment where your teen knows they can communicate freely without fear of freaking out Mom or Dad. This isn’t easy, but it is essential if you want your young person to come to you when they have a problem. “That doesn’t mean the relationship looks like the teen tells mom and dad everything because it needs to be healthy and respectful,” Thomason said. “They need to know, essentially, ‘If I tell Mom and Dad something they’re going to take care of me.’” Two | Set clear, fair expectations -- together Parents often bristle when told they should develop expectations cooperatively, wanting instead to lay down the law about what’s acceptable. But this authoritarian approach often causes teens to shut down, convinced their opinions about their own behavior don’t matter. Thomason reminds parents the goal is not who gets to make the rules, but that the teen follows them. “It’s really important for parents and the teen to have a conversation about the parents’ hopes for what they want dating to look like for their teen,” Thomason said. “Something like, ‘I want you to feel like the things that we set in place to protect you are appropriate. And I want us to have a plan for when you break our boundaries. What do you think should be the process?’” Three | Aim for equity, settle for fairness One of the big pitfalls in multi-child households are the comparisons children make about how Mom and Dad treat their siblings versus how they treat them. Thomason says treating children exactly the same is next to impossible; instead focus on being fair and being open about any inconsistencies. “Kids are going to nail you on fairness;
they want consistency across the board,” she said. “If you’re going to be inconsistent, and there’s an appropriate reason for it to be inconsistent, you really have to explain that.” “Have a conversation like, ‘We’re well aware that we’re being inconsistent here. Your older brother had more freedom and that didn’t go over well. We want to do better by you. We want to protect you better.’” Four | The first sex talk should happen way before the first date
P L A N N I N G R E T I R E M E N T* O N Your T E R M S .
Among other concerns parents have is that left to the mercy of hormones, dating will escalate into a sexual relationship. And while that’s not entirely out of the question, in most cases, parents should guard against overreacting in this area. “I think the parents just acknowledging their own panic and being a little vulnerable with their kids is okay,” Thomason said. “When you’re using a conversation with your child in order to make yourself feel better because you’re panicked, that never goes over well.” “I think a lot of times we attribute our fears onto our kids. When that happens, you have to differentiate, like, ‘This is not about you; it’s about me needing to tell you these things.’” Five | All that said, pay attention to the situation Chances are everything about dating will work out fine for your teen, but there are those instances when things aren’t fine and do require you to step in. Dating violence or pressure to engage in certain behaviors are a sad fact of life and parents should be aware of red flags that could signal something unhealthy is going on. “Pay attention to your kids and pay attention to their relationships,” Thomason said. “Most kids, when something bad is going on, they’re going to pull from every single one of their relationships, including you. They’re going to hide.” “So, look for differences: If your child is supertalkative and then they don’t talk, pay attention. If your child is not talkative and now all of a sudden, they’re trying to engage with you, that could be hiding too. Know your child and know when they’re not being themselves and then know how to engage in that conversation.”

Handbags & Purses | Use purse shapers or packing paper to keep them from slouching, and then display them on your shelves by type and color! Sweaters | Use a folding technique that shows the smooth front of each sweater and then stack them by type and color. Counterspace | Counterspace should be used as display space, especially in your closet, and is a great area to display your jewelry and small handbags! Jewelry | Use command hooks or nails to hang your necklaces and keep them from becoming tangled, and use a jewelry box or tray for your smaller pieces. Miscellaneous Items | Use cute storage baskets to contain your off season and miscellaneous items!
