et's face it, chain restaurants have their place, especially when you are driving through a strange city and you just want to pick up some Mexican food. You know exactly what to expect when you pull into Taco Bell or Chili’s. And when it comes to mega-events like a big office party or colossal family reunion, places like Gringo’s or Mamacita’s might fit the bill. However, when you are looking for authentic Mexican food, prepared the way Grandma used to make it with the freshest, most natural ingredients made from scratch, you want to go to a locally owned restaurant. And, it is always better to go where the owners are invested in the community and view both their employees and their customers as part of the family. If that is right up your alley, you want to check out Juanita's Mexican Kitchen. Juanita’s is Fairfield's newest family-owned and operated restaurant located in the strip center right across from the Outlet Mall in the formerly known location of Sergio’s. But don't be misled—even though they are new to Fairfield, this is not their first rodeo. The Nunez family has over 30 years of experience serving authentic family recipes from Guanajuato, Mexico, to friends and families across the Cypress area. As a matter of fact, they are so good at what they do, unlike many other small family-owned businesses, the COVID restrictions didn't even affect Juanita’s Mexican Restaurant at their Tomball location. They kept all of their 30 employees, and their loyal customers supported them through the entire lockdown. You may ask, "Of all the Mexican restaurants in the area, what sets Juanita's apart from the rest?" First of all, it is truly a family affair. They serve the highest quality authentic Guanajuato, Mexican recipes handed down from generation to generation through Juanita's family. Treat yourself to a delicious appetizer, then dig into a mouth-watering enchilada, sizzling fajitas, a perfectly wrapped burrito, or one of their classic seafood dishes. Your meal is served with homemade corn and flour tortillas. If it's a cold cerveza, a full-flavored Margarita, or other tasty libations you've set your sights on, you've come to the right place. Juanita's offers a full service bar boasting the best Margaritas in Cypress! Owners Miguel, Bianca, and Angel, their father, are here to stay. They're looking forward to establishing lasting relationships that result in 100% customer satisfaction as they build a stellar reputation for serving excellent food prepared in a clean, healthy environment and offered at reasonable prices. Their services include catering, reservations, and the ability of 24/7 online ordering. They also offer gift cards for any occasion.

"Wow amazing food staff amazing amazing amazing."
Even though they are new to the area, they have already received testimonials raving about their delicious meals, friendly atmosphere, and unbeatable service. Take a look at what pleased customers are saying: Juanita's Mexican Kitchen on 290 next to the outlet mall has AMAZING food and service! I tried a variety of what they offer and was very satisfied with it all. They are new to the area and have only been open for a few weeks. I highly recommend this place! —Amanda Welkey We had an amazing time this evening. Thank you to Bianca, and the rest of the staff, for making this such a memorable first-time experience. Our server was great, as was everyone else. There was a nice older gentleman in a black t-shirt who ensured my soda never got too low. The food was wonderful, as were the cocktails and the atmosphere. There was a young gentleman (who resembles Vin Diesel) dropping off chips and salsa to each table. He seems like a nice guy but always looked so serious. LOL. In any event, we had a wonderful time and will definitely be back. Thank you, guys. It was a great time—Scott Childers The service was fast and friendly. The hostess and manager kept checking on us. The Mexican pepper was AMAZING!!!. I only had one Mango Margarita, and that's all I needed. It was delicious. My kids and husband loved it. We will be coming back—Lisa Rocha La bienvenida Bianca, Miguel, and Angel! We are so glad you chose to expand into our community. Our Fairfield family welcomes your family! by Jackie Devine I am so excited to know about this place. My experience was off the charts, and I can only say, "I FEEL ALIVE!" It's a must-have, and the professional but caring staff is remarkable. Dr. M. W. This was just what I needed! I left feeling amazing. The next day after my drip, I completed tasks that I haven't been able to complete in a long time. I will most definitely be back. J. F. I stopped by on a Friday after a long workday with my wife. The ambiance is amazing, with a beautiful waterfront view. The luxury loungers were just perfect for getting my feet up, and the owners were fantastic hosts. I've never done anything like this previously and generally consider myself a healthy individual. After my session, which lasted around 25-30 minutes, I felt noticeable differences in my physical and emotional state. My feet were no longer throbbing from hours of walking around in Chucks, my entire body felt refreshed and alive, and I just felt generally in a better mood. It could also have been an awesome company (shout out to my wife and the business owners). To my delight, the feelings of renewed rejuvenation were not short-lived. It's been a few weeks, and I'm feeling alive like Johnny5. If you get the reference, you'll benefit from a quick drip. This place is dripped up and draped out, and you should see what they're talking about. Tell ’em Ruben sent you! by Jackie Devine The history of teeth whitening, or cleaning teeth, can be traced back to ancient times. In 3000 B.C., people didn't brush their teeth with a brush; they used chew sticks small twigs that a person chewed, which scraped off the particles on the teeth. Early Romans whitened their teeth using urine (you read that correctly). The ammonia in the urine was the bleaching agent. And, during the 17th century, people relied on their barbers to care for hair and take care of their teeth. The barber would file down the teeth and apply an acid that would whiten them. Unfortunately, while the practice made teeth whiter, it eroded tooth enamel and led to decay. However, in 2021, in Cypress, Texas, you can get a bright smile to go at Glo Parlor, a teeth whitening studio offering an in salon whitening system that provides a safe, fast, cost effective way to whiten teeth more efficiently. Holly Smith, with fifteen years as a dental hygienist, is a true entrepreneur. She saw a need and decided to fill it. Says Holly, "People get their teeth whitened for several reasons, for example, superficial stains from drinking coffee, cola, wine, smoking, or taking medications such as tetracycline, diseases, and even genetics. Maybe they have a special occasion (a wedding, high school reunion, etc.), job interviews, effects of aging, or they want to boost self confidence. I've seen it all. But, because I've been offering these services for years, I knew there had to be a better way to whiten teeth faster, and that could be a little easier on the pocketbook."
8 Fairfield Community Gazette - July 2021
Stepping out of the dental office and into the salon, Holly's clients can now receive a teeth whitening process, which takes only an hour. The session is broken down into three back to back 20 minute increments in which the gel is rinsed and reapplied. The products are safe and natural: • Natural plant and mineralbased laser gels • No preservatives • Non-abrasive, gentle • Fast, effective, and immediate • Safe for existing dental work However, Holly cautions the teeth whitening process does not lighten restorations (crowns, veneers, composites, bonding) beyond their original color. However, it does remove stains from them. If you have these on anterior teeth (front teeth), you may notice a difference between your natural tooth color and the restoration after the whitening session. Clients can book online through the Glo Parlor Facebook page, Instagram, or through the website, gloparlor.com.

What to do when you're in pain. A question physical therapists get frequently asked is whether to use ice or heat on an injury. Here are some general guidelines to help in many scenarios. If you have certain conditions such as fibromyalgia, Reflex Sympathetic Disorder (RSD), or rheumatoid arthritis, your sensory pathways are affected and don’t fall into the typical response patterns. • The first 24 – 48 hours after an acute injury onset, use ice. This is true even for simple muscle sprains or pulls. • After an activity, at the end of the day or when swelling is present, use ice. When things are inflamed, the more you do throughout the day, the more inflamed the area will get. Ice will assist in decreasing pain, inflammation, and swelling. • Heat, while it feels good, is contraindicated in most situations or when inflammation or swelling is present. • Whether heat or ice is used, you shouldn’t need to apply to the area of injury for longer than 20 minutes. Things to know about icing: • Don’t ice for more than 20 minutes • Let your tissues fully re-warm before re-icing • 20 minutes on, 40 minutes off is a good rule for icing multiple times • If you’re icing in an area with superficial nerves (elbow), don’t ice for more than 10 minutes • You never want to ice before an activity. You want your muscles warm, not cold!

If your pain doesn’t subside after a few days, don’t hesitate to reach out and ask for help. We can evaluate your injury or pain and get you back on your path to recovery. Looking for an ice pack and can’t find one? No worries. Making your own ice pack at home is practical and easy. Ingredients: • 2 cups of water • 1 cup of rubbing alcohol • gallon-sized Ziploc bag Directions: • Pour the water and rubbing alcohol into the bag ** Double the bag for extra protection against breakage. • Zip the bag shut removing as much air as possible. • Place the bag in the freezer until the liquid reaches a slushy mixture. • When ready, wrap the bag in a towel or pillowcase before applying it to the skin. (DON’T NOT APPLY BAG DIRECTLY TO SKIN)

What’s a paradigm shift? It’s a change in your thought patterns, a shift in your logic. As a human, I’m certain of when that day happened for me. It was January 2018. It felt like a voice, had no sound, but said to me “I have big things in store for you, but you cannot do them like this”. Call me crazy, but that changed me. I still to this day, do not know what “them” pertained to. But in the meantime, not knowing what each experience leads to, I choose to believe that everything I go through is the “big” thing and all part of my shift. In this case, it was getting to meet Mike Gilbert! Mike Gilbert is a standout Cypress citizen, Singer, Songwriter, Husband, and Dad. I attended one of his local solo acoustic acts at Cypress’s fun backyard hangout called, The Burger Ranch, located at 16702 House Hahl Road. Gotta check it out! So who’s Mike? Among other things, he participates with Relay for Life of Cy-Fair and has written and performed original songs he’s titled: Scarecrow, Rough Around the Edges and Edge of No Control. Mike also covers songs written by Brandon Steadman and Dan Adams. Look for Mike Gilbert around the Cypress area, he’s a fan favorite and a regular so you won’t have to try too hard! Make sure to Follow him on Facebook @mikegilbert-music! Rock On Cypress! Until next time…

FFA was the acronym for Future Farmers of America but the organization, in an effort to broaden its potential membership beyond youth working in traditional "production" agriculture, changed its official name from Future Farmers of America to the National FFA Organization in 1988; it is still commonly referred to as FFA. High school students compete in various events, in several major areas including Career Development Events (CDE's) and Supervised Agricultural Experience programs (SAE's). Students are supervised by agricultural education teachers in cooperation with parents, employers and other adults who assist individuals in the development and achievement of educational and career goals. According to the constitution and bylaws of the National FFA Organization, each student must be enrolled in an agriculture class to be eligible for membership. Activities: • Raising animal projects including sheep, goats, steers, turkeys, chickens, rabbits, and swine to show and sell in the CFISD Livestock show in February. • Tour Guiding at the Houston Livestock Show • And much, much more! Brooke Blackshear, granddaughter of Debbie and Paul Blackshear, will join us and tell us about her time as a member of the Texas FFA and the Cypress Ranch FFA chapter. She served as the chapter President for the 2019-2020 school year. She raised hogs, steers, cows, and chickens! She participated in many Leadership Development Events and Career Development events. The FFA is an organization that strives to educate the next generation of the importance of the Agriculture industry, raise students to be the leaders of tomorrow and provide opportunities for students to develop into men and women of outstanding character by teaching them invaluable life lessons. In keeping with our theme, lunch will be BBQ beef with all the fixin’s! The Blackshears, the Mayfields, and the Goodsons are cooking this delicious meal for us! Cost is only $10 each. Smith Middle School eighth grade student Emily Hancock and Bridgeland High School freshman Jasmine Lu had their rodeo artwork selected to be displayed in State Rep. Mike Schofield’s office at the Texas State Capitol and the district’s office in Houston. Rep. Schofield requested artwork that was created by students that live in District 132 that also represented the Cy-Fair community. Both pieces selected received a high number of votes from district art teachers when pieces were being finalized to be submitted to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Program. “It is always a pleasure to highlight CFISD students whose artwork is requested to publicly exhibit,” said Lee Carrier, CFISD visual arts coordinator. “I am proud of the two students who received multiple accolades from not only the rodeo art contest, but also being selected to represent the community and display their artworks locally and statewide at the house district offices of Rep. Schofield.” Rodeo Art Capitol Display 1: State District 132 Rep. Mike Schofield poses with Bridgeland High School freshman Jasmine Lu’s rodeo artwork. Thanks for the Memories… by Coach Jacqueline Livingston
Words cannot describe how blessed I have been to be your coach at Bridgeland. You made my job so easy. Every one of you was like a daughter to me. I've loved seeing you grow from young ladies into women each year. You are among the most capable students in the district—I’ve watched you turn into power athletes. It has been such a joy to have joined you on your journey toward greatness. I look forward to watching you continue to break records, and I know all of you will do amazing things in your future endeavors. Even though I am saying farewell, I will be in the background cheering you on to future successes.
