Editors Notes—Well, folks, we've made it to October, the tenth month of the year in our calendar. It is the beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere, but it is associated with spring in the Southern hemisphere. Some fun facts about February include: • October's birthstones are Tourmaline and Opal. • Birth Flower for October is the Calendula or Marigold. • October has two zodiac symbols: Libra (until October 22nd) and Scorpio (from October 23rd to November 22nd) • October is National Pizza Month, National Popcorn Poppin' Month, National Pork Month, and National Seafood Month. • October ends on the same day of the week as February every year. • More United States Presidents were born in October than any other month, while only five First Ladies were born in October. October marks the beginning of three months of non-stop holiday season fun. The end of the month features Halloween, but this is just the start of the holiday season to come. Yes, this month marks the beginning of our non-stop holiday season. So now you can start decorating for the upcoming holiday. There is no scarcity of pumpkins in the craft stores, so get going. Speaking of the holidays, we are reminded that we are entering the season of sharing and gratefulness. So guess what? We have lots of heartwarming stories to kick off the season. I'm sure you will enjoy Al Cisne's story on Paying It Forward. You might want to know how Central Wire accumulated its donation to Cy-Fair Helping Hands. And, you will probably be interested in reading about and participating in the 2021 Dine Out For Charity Campaign. Remember The Cypress Music Scene is sponsoring the Octoberfest on October 2nd. Joyce Behind The Mike is a reoccurring column, as is the Senior Activities and now Spotlight on an Entrepreneur. And about local real estate, you will want to find out what makes one of our area companies so great. Please remember to contact me or drop me an email when you see one of your neighbors going above and beyond the call of duty. Those people and their kind deeds are what make it too great to be a Fairfield resident. Real Estate—It seems to be the most talked about, wild ride these days. Homes are being snatched up in one day on the market, sometimes tens of thousands of dollars above list price, and even having their appraisal contingencies waived! Who knew that it would get this crazy, or how long it will last? No one knows! This market couldn't have been predicted. What we do know is that we are fortunate to live in Texas and even more so being in the Houston real estate market. Our abundance of highly sought after communities is a huge reason that people are moving to Texas. Their location, great schools, and the countless amenities they have to offer are just some of the reasons people are excited to settle in our neighborhoods! Here is an inside look at one of the areas' top teams, living in and serving Fairfield, and the greater Houston area. When you hear the phrase, “Together We’re Better,” it may remind you of the Ellis-Nabors Real Estate Team logo you have seen posted on their ads, and on social media. But to the team, “Together We’re Better” isn’t just a slogan; it is a way of life. That dynamic team was co-founded in 2009 by Clint & Amy Nabors and her parents, Mark & Catherine Ellis. Mark had been in real estate since 1983, and Clint, licensed in 1999, had graduated with a degree in real estate from Baylor University. In 2015 they joined Better Homes & Gardens-Gary Greene to better serve their clients. Over the years, they have steadily grown to include more agents and staff—all of whom understand the Fairfield market because most of them live here. Like any forward-thinking team, they are plugged into Houston and its surrounding areas because they have members who also live in Bridgeland, Cypress Creek Lakes & Jersey Village. Collectively, they have sold over 500 homes in Fairfield alone and average 150 real estate transactions in any given year. They also continuously rank as a top producing team within Gary Greene and have received numerous awards from the Houston Business Journal! As for its co-founder, Clint Nabors, he is passionate about cultivating new talent, mentoring existing agents, and sharing his vast knowledge and depth of experience. He enjoys guiding his proteges in positive directions and helping them achieve a rewarding and successful career in real estate. Clint’s passion and commitment to excellence have led him to become the Branch Manager and Real Estate Coach for the Fairfield Office. His wife, Amy Nabors, has taken the lead role for the Ellis-Nabors Team, and she continues to help her team exceed the expectations of every client. Copyright © 2021 Peel, Inc.
Whether working with buyers or sellers, the team is committed to maintaining good follow-up and the highest standards. Plus, they offer cutting-edge marketing support that strongly emphasizes 21st century sales technology, including automated systems, artificial intelligence, and services like staging, professional photography, video and aerials. Their team of professionals is committed in every way possible to helping their clients with one of the most important decisions they will ever make. The Ellis-Nabors Team is backed by one of the top brokerages in Houston, Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate. The support and training the agents receive from that forward-thinking firm contributes to their successes, along with the coaching they receive from Clint. Clint has said, “It takes a company with its finger on the pulse and an eye to the future to ride the waves of the real estate market, and that is what we are all committed to doing.” The Ellis-Nabors Team is constantly looking to provide service to the community and give back. They partner with many local businesses and schools, and have fun doing it. They are known for their annual Shred Events, National Night Out, Candy Cane Fun Run, Running for Greater Things, and more! Their agents have charities near and dear to their hearts that they support as well. The Gary Greene office features many events as well. They will be holding a Community-Wide Low-Cost Pet Vaccination Event with local vendors, people from the neighborhood, and pet lovers. It will be a family-fun event with food trucks, face painters, and pet adoptions. More information on this event coming, stay tuned. Paying It Forward Submitted by Al Cisne The Gazette always asks for stories about people in our community helping one another out or doing good deeds. So, here is one for you: Ever have a ‘bad Monday’ and you encounter just the person to show you what is right with the world? Here is my story” On my way home this afternoon, I stopped at Auto Zone at the front of FF, and I noticed someone was working on a car in the heat. It was no other than Gary, the manager. I stopped to offer help and ask how he was doing. He declined the help but mentioned that he had just gotten back to work from being out sick for a couple of weeks, but a young lady was down on her luck and had a bad battery. On this particular car, you have to remove the tire and the inner fender well to get to the hold-down bracket and the cables to change it, and most places won’t do it or charge quite a bit for the labor. So here was Gary paying it forward. People like Gary make me Fairfield Proud!

Spotlight on a Local Entrepreneur Entreprenuer
By JoAnn Lambert Trip Coordinator
By Jackie Devine Each month, we are going to salute a local entrepreneur. The first in our series is Kim Liberta, Chef, owner and operator of Cookin' with Kim. She holds a Culinary Arts Degree from Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, and her experience in the field is extraordinary. Chef Kim has trained with some of the nation's leading culinary talents and worked in significant eateries and small-town cafes across the country, including the Wolfgang Puck Café at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, and San Francisco's Fog City Diner concept in Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Chicago. Her favorite position was as Executive Chef for the South Gate Group north of Chicago in Lake Forest, Illinois, where our Chef ran three different concepts under one roof. In 2007, as a stay-at-home mom, Kim began teaching freezer meal classes for busy professionals and parents to serve their families healthy, nutritious meals. From there, her reputation and her business blossomed. Today, she competes with major players, preparing a full array of the freezer meals, Tuesday night hot meals, and client favorite granola bites. Chef Kim also caters and teaches classes from her local Cypress kitchen. After 15 years, Chef is bringing back those original classes "Freezer Meal Make and Take," where adults who love and hate to cook work as a team to prepare from-scratch meals to stock their freezers. She also teaches junior chefs all summer long! To learn more about Cookin' with Kim or register for an upcoming class, go online to www.cookinwithkim.com.

Bridgeland HS Students Recognized at FBLA National Conference
Meet Megan Breidenthal. She comes to us from Wells Elementary where she was an Instructional Specialist. She and her husband have been married for 15 years and have been members of our Fairfield community for 14 years. They have three amazing boys, Caidan, freshman at Bridgeland, Cain, seventh grader at Salyards and Cannon, a third grader at Ault. She is a proud CFISD graduate from Cy-Fair High School (BFND) and a Fighting Texas Aggie c/o 2005 (Whoop). We are so excited to have her as an All-Star and look forward to the great things she will accomplish here at Ault Elementary.
Bridgeland High School juniors Rithvik Katikaneni and Shreyan Katta received national recognition during the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference, held virtually June 29-July 2. More than 12,000 students from across the country participated in the online conference where they attended leadership and networking sessions and competed in multiple events. Katikaneni and Katta were recognized during FBLA’s Awards of Excellence ceremonies for their competition finish. The pair worked together as a team to place eighth overall in Introduction to Business Presentation. This is the first time students from Bridgeland placed at the national competition. “I am very proud of the effort our students put into FBLA competitions this year,” said Tom Mosley, Bridgeland FBLA sponsor. “First, they had to place in the top four at the state level to qualify to compete at the national level. Then they competed against so many teams from all over the country. It is a blessing to work with young people who work hard and who truly care about helping each other improve their skills.” In addition to Katikaneni and Katta, Bridgeland sophomores Samah Ahmed, Shiv Palla and Rajvi Mishra competed in Introduction to Social Media Strategy at the national conference. Students compete and are recognized for a broad range of business and career-related areas at the local, state and national levels. The FBLA National Leadership Conference featured 74 events at the high school level, 60 events at the collegiate level and nine events at the middle school level. FBLA is a national career and technical student organization that strives to bridge business and education by providing positive working relationships through leadership and development programs. Visit the FBLA website for more information.

Mary Ruth Simonson & Hannah Schlachter, Ault PTO Butterfly Garden Co-Chairs The Ault Butterfly Garden was in tip-top shape for the first day of school, thanks to the volunteers who came to our "Big Help" event the week before school started. Garden committee volunteers have been maintaining, weeding, and watering the garden all summer. Still, a big push right before the school ensured that our beautiful garden was ready to welcome our AllStars back to campus. Adults and kids alike worked on adding soil, making a new bed for a donated mandarin orange tree, spread mulch, weed, and add pea gravel to our painted rock walkway. Students worked together to make a new "star" from donated flagstone pavers. Caterpillars are munching away on pipevine, milkweed, and passion vine, and we'll have more butterflies soon. Come check it out! 10 cool facts that about butterflies 1. Butterfly wings are transparent. 2. There are almost 20,000 butterfly species. 3. Butterflies use their feet to taste. 4. Cy-Fair FCU awards 7 local teachers classroom makeovers
Three CFISD teachers were awarded hundreds of dollars to enhance their classrooms for their students as they were selected as winners of CyFair Federal Credit Union’s Extreme Classroom Makeover competition. The credit union, which was founded by 10 local educators and has historic ties to CFISD, recognized a winning elementary school, middle school and high school teacher, allowing each to reimagine his or her classroom in creative ways to maximize learning. Cypress Springs High School Algebra I teacher Eliza Dorsey, Salyards Middle School special education teacher Laura Coulter and Bang Elementary School pre-kindergarten teacher Tiara Williams were chosen as the three $500 recipients. Dorsey used some of her money to buy materials that relate to her students’ social and emotional needs, like motivational posters, banners and stickers that are placed all around her classroom. “Providing motivation through words and a positive environment energizes the mind to push beyond the limitations to acquire success,” Dorsey said. For Coulter, she said winning the money has helped her create a more welcoming and inclusive space for her students. “I am so excited about my new teaching environment,” Coulter said. “It has been so exciting to put in place all of my ideas for a classroom that will help my students with various accessibility differences. I cannot thank Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union enough for choosing me to win this amazing gift.” Williams said being selected as one of the winners helps enhance her students’ education. “I am thankful as a teacher that I can awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge,” Williams said. “Receiving the money for the classroom makeover has helped me buy supplies to decorate a colorful learning environment for my students and to buy hands-on learning materials for my students to explore.” Emery Elementary School teacher Kiara Thompson, Aragon Middle School teacher Yolanda Figgs and Maybelline Carpenter Center teacher Deedra Wollin were recognized as runner-up honorees and each earned $150 for their classrooms. Black Elementary School teacher Dena Morrison was selected as a random draw $250 winner. “Cy-Fair FCU was founded by 10 educators and we maintain close ties with CFISD to this day,” said Cameron Dickey, Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union president and CEO. “Our classroom makeover competition is just one opportunity when we can show our appreciation for the dedication that the district’s teachers demonstrate to educating our community’s next generation.” Classroom Makeover 2: Salyards Middle School special education teacher Laura Coulter poses with a $500 check after being selected as the middle school winner of Cy-Fair FCU’s Extreme Classroom Makeover competition. 12 Fairfield Community Gazette - October 2021
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD welcomed students back to 92 campuses Aug. 23, beginning the 2021-2022 school year that marks the district’s 82nd year in existence. The school year marked a return to more traditional learning. “We’ve been looking forward to the day where we would have the majority of our kids back in the building,” said Melissa Martin, Francone Elementary School principal. “Even with the changes at the start of the year, everyone has taken it in stride. We’re putting health and safety first.” Added Martha Strother, Brautigam Center principal: “It’s great being back. We just love the happy noises that kids make and the energy that they bring to our hallways and classrooms. We’ve all learned a little bit about not having kids with us and we know they’re a blessing to have.” A number of other campuses opened their doors to students following a variety of completed renovation projects to update the schools and improve learning environments. Safety and security upgrades funded by the 2019 and 2014 Bond programs continued to take shape throughout the district. The first day allowed students and parents to see the overwhelming support for CFISD. School namesakes, Board of Trustees members and numerous volunteers helped welcome students in the morning. Many visited elementary campuses and joined countless other volunteers from community, business and faith-based partners in serving as Bus Buddies in the afternoon. First Day of School 2: A sign in front of Keith Elementary School celebrates the first day of school Aug. 23 and welcomes students back to campus.

Submitted by Kim Maxian Fall is in the air! This year is off to a great start with an increase in membership and members eager to support our committees. Our October 2nd Garage Sale is just around the corner. We invite the Fairfield Community to clean out all of those outgrown clothes, closets, and garages to sell in the Garage Sale. The Fairfield Women’s Club charges $25 per household to advertise in numerous newspapers, newsletters, and on line. We also provide a map on our website of all of the homes that will be actively selling on Oct. 2nd. We do these things to help the sale be successful for everyone. All proceeds go to our Charities: the schools that feed Fairfield, VFW, and Constables. Go to our website, www.fairfieldwomensclub.org to sign up for the Garage Sale. Also, we are actively planning the Christmas Market for Dec. 4th, 9:00-2:00 followed by the Christmas Parade (at dusk) It will be held in the parking lot of Good Shepard Methodist Church. Save the date and come do some early Christmas shopping, then participate in the Parade with your bicycles, golf carts, floats, pick-up trucks or whatever you choose to ride. We ask that all participants decorate their ride in Christmas lights and décor, and if possible, have Christmas music for our spectators to enjoy. If you are interested in having a booth ($35) at the Market, go to www.fairfieldwomensclub,org . Our October meeting is on the 19th at Bradford Creek Clubhouse at 7:00pm. If you would like to join Fairfield Women’s Club, please feel free to come visit a meeting or if you want to become a member, go to our website, www.fairfieldwomensclub.org , where you will find an application to join.

CFISD Junior Police Academy 1: Tactical flight officers with the Texas Department of Public Safety talk to CFISD Junior Police Academy cadets about the Airbus AS350 helicopter. A flight crew flew the helicopter and landed at each academy session, giving participants one of many up-close looks at various first responder units.
In continuing to find ways to engage with the CFISD community, the district’s police department completed its second Junior Police Academy, giving students a week of learning and activities and helping foster the relationship between officers and their constituents. Created for 9- and-10-year-old students, the academy featured sessions at Cypress Springs (June 7-11) and Cypress Ridge (July 26-30) high schools. A total of 58 students participated in this year’s edition. Academy attendees were grouped into smaller squads, with officers serving as mentors and interacting with cadets on a personal level. “The Junior Police Academy summer camps continue to be a huge success and each year we have students on a waitlist,” said Eric Mendez, CFISD chief of police. “It is incredible to see the students learn different lessons while participating in various activities during the one-week camp. What’s even better is the interaction the students have with the officers and get to see us in a different light. The camps help our department maintain our belief in educational policing and becoming a part of the student’s educational environment.” Officers and cadets alternated between outdoor activities, hands-on instruction and classroom training each day. Session topics included social media safety, stereotyping and bullying, gang prevention, drug prevention and gun safety. Cadets learned various skills, including mapping and tourniquet application, while other activities emphasized team building and problem-solving. Physical training was incorporated daily, with cadets competing in an obstacle course. Fun activities were also fit into the week, giving campers and officers even more opportunities to interact and connect. Cadets were also treated to unique meet-and-greet opportunities with local public safety first responders. Police pilots and tactical flight officers with the Texas Department of Public Safety flew and landed a helicopter at each campus, Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department firefighters and paramedics showcased a firetruck, and members of City Ambulance Service visited cadets and showcased an ambulance. Feedback was positive, and plans are in place for possible academy expansion. “Knowing that we have several hundred students in our district who want to participate every year, I continue to ask, ‘What can we do for next summer? Can we have more camps? How can we make it better?’” Mendez said. “The officers do an outstanding job with the kids in keeping them engaged every single day of the week, finding activities for them to do and lessons for them to learn, and having actual experiences.” 14 Fairfield Community Gazette - October 2021

Congratulations to the young men of RBBA’s competition team! They made us all proud with their sportsmanship and hard work at the AAU Junior Olympics. Since January, our athletes trained five nights a week to prepare for these events, and their efforts paid off. They earned medals in nearly all the events they took place in while still cheering on their competitors and friends. Although they trained intending to win in mind, Master Rinker also teaches our athletes the 6 of the tenents of taekwondo. The boys showed COURTESY, INTEGRITY, SELF-CONTROL, PERSEVERANCE, RESPECT, VICTORY, and that is where they truly won. Their experience at Junior Olympics and everything they learned while preparing will stay with them and help them become leaders in the future. Congrats again, fellas, and thank you to our coaches and parents for all the time and effort that went into helping them achieve their goals.
