Long Way Home Texas was fortunate enough to present Honkytonk for Hope, benefitting pediatric transplant patients, to the Cypress community on November 13th, 2021. When we started this endeavor, we were just a group of knuckleheads with a crazy idea, wanting to give back. We had no idea how much our lives would be impacted. The generosity of Cypress, local businesses, and Texas artists from all over was simply amazing. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, we raised $42,000 to assist the families of these children with our first event. We chose as our benefactor of the event the Children’s Transplant Initiative, a local 501c3 charity that works directly with these families. Founders Ross and Cheryl Witty are some of the most amazing human beings who enabled us to cut out the middleman and assist these families directly. What most people don’t know, is that, depending on the organ, as of 2017 the average transplant costs $932,337.00 in medical expenses alone. For a significant portion of the actual medical expenses, there are mechanisms and organizations to provide relief. The immediately crippling expenses no one thinks of are the ancillary costs. Temporary housing, food, parking, insurance premiums, and assistance with lost wages because of a parents need to be with their child in those teetering moments between death, and the hope for life. Our organization is named after a song by local artist, Hayes Carll. The lyrics that capture my heart, and exemplified by these children like Oliver, go as follows: “You weren't askin' much at all, Just catch you when you fall. On your own, the long way home What's that sadness in your smile You've been cryin' all the while Could you lean upon my shoulder I guess you'd die to just get older” My most heartfelt gratitude goes out to our host, The Barn at the Frio Grill, our very generous sponsors, the dozens of volunteers who selflessly gave of themselves to help us, the artists from all over our beautiful state who came performed, Scott Hall of LEL Photography, and the hundreds of Cypress citizens who came out and supported us. I’m just a simple kid who grew up in the area and loves Cypress and its people. Once again, proving that Texans are always there in a time of need, Cypress did not fail to deliver. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. If you would like to know more, get involved, or would like more event info, please visit our website at www.lwhtexas.com. In most humble gratitude, Michael Broussard President – Long Way Home Texas

Around Fairfield After a tragic 8 months in which we lost my stepfather, father, and sister, our family began a journey that would change our lives. We adopted my sister’s son, full well knowing he had Alagille Syndrome. We weren’t sure if he would survive but he has shown that not only is he a fighter and survivor, he’s also the light of our lives. Thankfully, another family made the hardest decision to donate organs and Oliver got his new liver in March of 2019. He was given another chance to lead a full and happy life, with some additional requirements. Oliver takes many different medications daily to ensure his body doesn’t reject the new liver and to make sure his other organs aren’t being adversely affected by the Alagille Syndrome. He has a specialist for every organ in his body and has ongoing appointments with them regularly. Oliver has occupational, physical, and speech therapy often. Home health nurses are with him around the clock to ensure he is receiving the very best care. Oliver has had multiple heart surgeries since the liver transplant and he will require more surgeries in the future. All of these medical interventions are necessary to ensure he stays healthy but they have also had other impacts on everyone in the family. We went from being a family of 4 to a family of 5 overnight. I had to quit my job to be with Oliver since he was in the hospital for the first nine months we had him. He requires so much care that it is impossible for me to work outside the home. Having strangers in our home to help with him all the time has also been an adjustment for all of us. My older boys have had to deal with Oliver taking much of their parents’ attention - and they have handled it with grace and huge love for their new little brother. Fortunately, we have been able to meet some fantastic people along the way who have made this process a bit less stressful. When Oliver first came into our lives, we started a Facebook page for him so our family and friends could keep up with the daily changes to his health.

We received such an outpouring of support and encouragement from the people on this page. Oliver became locally famous this way and to date the page has over 800 followers! While we were at Texas Children’s Hospital, we met the people with The Children’s Transplant Initiative. They have a mission to empower, inspire, and give hope to children and their families who are involved in the transplant process. They provide spiritual, emotional, and financial support to families at the Texas Medical Center. They were, and are, a huge help to my family. More recently, we were blessed to be a part of Long Way Home Texas, a charitable organization benefitting transplant recipients in the Houston area. They recently began to host events in which all profits are utilized to help families pay for ancillary costs not covered by insurance. These costs include food, short-term lodging, parking and other expenses incurred due to catastrophic medical issues. This past November, we were blessed to have been a part of their Honkytonk For Hope event where 14 local (and not so local) musicians performed. At the event, merchandise was sold, money was raised through auctions and donations, and a wonderful time was had by all. The event raised over $40,000! It is through foundations such as Long Way Home Texas, as well as donations from individuals to our PayPal and Venmo accounts, that make it possible for us to continue to support Oliver. We thank God every day for the generosity of strangers and the care and love we receive from our family and friends. We are excited to see what the future holds! We had over 80 vendors, and they were so impressed with our community and the organization of the event. Thank you to Good Shepherd United Methodist Church for hosting us, and to the Constables for patrolling the event to keep us all safe. Congratulations to A. Cepeda, the winner of our Wine Raffle Basket. We look forward to making this an event for everyone to enjoy each year. The parade was a great success as well. Thank you to the Fire Department for leading the way, and for all the participants for making the night magical for all. Our Next meeting will be January 18th, 7:00pm, at Bradford Creek Clubhouse.

Around Fairfield A Hot New Addition to the Cypress Restaurant Scene By Jackie Devine
News has spread that Andy Correa, owner and operator of Andy's Kitchen, is on the verge of opening a second restaurant just a few miles down Highway 290 at the former New York & Chicago Pizza Company House site. As soon as he announced the coming of Andy's Bar and Grill, questions started to fly. We thought you might also be curious about Andy's plans because they are sure to include you, your family, and your friends. Question: Are you closing Andy's Kitchen? Answer: No, it is a unique concept and it will continue to be the neighborhood diner/hamburger joint. There will be no changes at Andy's Kitchen. Question: Are you providing the same menu at both restaurants? Answer: No, Andy’s Bar and Grill is a totally different concept than Andy’s Kitchen. At the new restaurant, we will serve pasta, Cajun fusion-type items, and American cuisine, like chicken fried steak.

Question: How else will Andy's Bar and Grill be different from Andy's Kitchen? Answer: During the day, customers will dine in a kid-friendly environment. In the evenings, it will morph into a Cypress “watering hole”. We believe in a business model based on people eating and staying to relax and unwind. Monday through Thursday, customers might be surprised by karaoke or trivia night, and on weekends, they will enjoy live entertainment. Question: Is it going to be kid-friendly? Answer: Yes, from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm, children and families are welcome. After 9:00 pm, diners must be at least 21 years old. Question: Well, where is it? Answer: Andy’s Bar and Grill is located on the Highway 290 feeder road between Mueschke Road and Mason Road, less than three miles from Andy's Kitchen. Heading west, it is right before the Memorial Hermann Hospital. Question: Are we ever going to see you now that you have two places going? Answer: Yes, I'll be splitting my time at both locations. I plan to be as active as I can at both locations and I don't want to lose any of the personal touches that we have there. Stay tuned for the opening of Andy's Bar and Grill. You can follow Andy on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ andyskitchentx or reach him by phone at 832-244-1087.

Holiday Market Participants
Over 80 Vendors participated in the 2021 Fairfield Christmas Market sponsored by the Fairfield Club. Shoppers could find everything from jewelry, wreaths, make-up, wood crafts, homebaked goods, and organic Elderberry syrup, to T-Shirts, homemade throws, purses, and painted rocks. At least 15 students displayed their entrepreneurial talent, and Gabriel Beard was one of them.
Gabriel Written by Rachel Beard Born in rural northeast Scotland to expatriate parents and reared in the dynamic metropolis of Bangkok, Thailand, 11-year-old Gabriel Beard found himself living in a foreign new land called Texas in 2020. Brought up with a Montessori education that fosters interdependence and a love of learning, he was at the same time immersed in the entrepreneurial and service oriented mindset of the Thai culture. This autumn, Gabriel joined the course, Entrekidneur Adventures, in his homeschool group,

Cypress Homeschool Council, and began to imagine the endless possibilities that such an opportunity could bring to his life. Ever an engineer, Gabriel is endlessly building, designing, and tinkering with things, yet it is through his sociable and creative nature that he is a consummate storyteller. This storytelling spirit led him to the idea of writing books, which became the focal point of his new start-up business, Son-fish Tales. Son-fish Tales began with the Texas Animals Alphabet Book, inspired by his recognition of the very different animals found in Texas versus Thailand. Written and illustrated himself, he plans to continue his line of work with more children’s books, comic books, stories of adventure, as influenced by his love of classic literature, and various Thai and Chinese fairy tales, which formed a large basis of his childhood imagination. Aside from his schooling, Gabriel is an avid reader, a junior black belt in Taekwondo, and a drummer. He loves to hunt, fish, climb trees, and actively participate in his church. When not fighting for survival from his two sisters and toddler brother, Gabriel enjoys finding a quiet corner in which he can tinker, build, read, or ponder his next project. If you’d like to support Gabriel and purchase a personally autographed copy of his new book, please reach out to his manager (his mom), Rachel Beard, on WhatsApp, text, or by phone at 830481-9187.

Bridgeland Band Performed at the TX UIL State Marching Band Championships The Bridgeland, Cypress Woods and Jersey Village high school marching bands wrapped up a successful season at the UIL Class 6A Marching Band State Championship on Nov. 8 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. All three bands competed at the state contest after placing among the top four at the UIL Area I Marching Band Contest on Oct. 30 at Legacy Stadium in Katy. The 2021 state contest marked the second consecutive state bids for Bridgeland and Cypress Woods and the third overall appearance for the Cypress Woods program. Jersey Village competed for the second time at the state championship after first appearing at the contest in 2018. “It was a great day for the band students from Bridgeland, Cypress Woods and Jersey Village high schools as they performed at the Texas UIL State Marching Band Championships,” said Mary Running, director of fine arts. “We are so proud to have three of our marching bands from Cypress-Fairbanks ISD earn the honor of representing multiple school districts from the Houston area at this competition. The students and parents have put in countless hours over the past few months preparing for this opportunity. The success of our students is the result of the great support we receive from our community, school board and administration in CFISD. We hope the students and parents will cherish the memories of competing at state and this marching season for many years to come. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is truly a community that provides outstanding opportunities for all.” For more information about the state contest, visit the UIL website. Bridgeland HS Volleyball Team Finishes Season as State Semifinalist The Bridgeland High School volleyball team finished its 2021 season as state semifinalist after falling to San Antonio Brandeis in the UIL Class 6A state semifinal on Nov. 19 at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. Bridgeland was defeated by San Antonio Brandeis in four sets by the scores of 18-25, 21-25, 25-19 and 21-25. The Bears finish the season with a 39-12 overall record. The 2021 season marked Bridgeland’s first trip to the state tournament. “This season was special,” said Verena Khalil, Bridgeland head volleyball coach. “I told the girls heading into the tournament ‘we’re a family so let’s play like one.’ This group was incredible at getting better at every practice. These ladies were committed to our mission and I couldn’t be prouder of what we accomplished this season.” For Bridgeland senior Emily Marks, the end of the 2021 season concludes four years as a varsity player and etches the team’s playoff run into the UIL record books. “It’s really an incredible feeling knowing that we will forever be remembered as the first Bridgeland team to make it to state,” Marks said. “I think it will also help the girls next season giving them confidence knowing that if people count them out or call them the underdogs, they have the fight to get where they want to be.”

They’re the reason we’re able to be successful.” Bridgeland is the fifth CFISD football team to reach the regional finals since 2016, with the Bears following Cypress Ridge (2016), Cy-Fair (2017 and 2018), Langham Creek (2017) and Cypress Creek (2018 and 2019) high schools.
