Around Fairfield

We know and love Fairfield… Submitted by Jamie Calvert

Peter Cottontail is coming to Fairfield on April 9th, and you have Boutwell Properties to thank for arranging this exciting event! What's more, the Easter Bunny has gone high tech. As he drives through our community, families will have a chance to participate in the season's festivities by tracking which neighborhood he is in and where he will be traveling next on an app posted on their Facebook Page @ TheBoutwellTeam.

The Boutwell Team's mission statement is: "To enhance the quality of life for our customers and community for generations to come." The Boutwell Team has thirteen agents, three of which reside in Fairfield. As a multimillion-dollar producing firm with over 100 transactions annually, The Boutwell Team is looking forward to continued success in the Cypress area. Look for their red cardinal mascot 'Reddy' in all their listings.

If Boutwell Properties sounds familiar to you, there is a good reason. For over 20 years, Dan andv Cindy Boutwell have devoted themselves to serving the Greater Houston real estate market, specifically in northwest Houston.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN FAIRFIELD

Over two years ago, they decided with their experience, expertise, contacts, and winning reputation, the time was right to venture out on their own and establish Boutwell Properties. The Boutwells are one out of eighteen – less than 1% in all Houston Real Estate Professionals (44,767) – to win the Five Star Award for Real Estate Professionals for six consecutive years based on client satisfaction. 4 Fairfield Community Gazette - April 2022

Cindy, a former resident, built the 250th house in Fairfield! During her residency in Fairfield, she was deeply ensconced in the activities that benefited the community, presiding over Fairfield Women's Club as President and serving as a Girl Scout leader for two Fairfield troops. In its infancy, she worked with the Fairfield YMCA (now the Fairfield Athletic Center) to participate in the planning of community parks. Over the years, The Boutwell Team has continued to represent a viable presence supporting the community in the following ways: Continued on Page 5 Copyright © 2022 Peel, Inc.

Around Fairfield Continued from Page 4 • Keith Elementary Sock Hop – They are sponsors for the event and have run the photo booth for several years, just recently adding a magician to their spinning wheel of prizes. • Giant Pumpkin Contests at Ault, Swenke, and Keith Elementary Schools (originally a Fairfield contest held at the Fairfield Athletic Center) – They decided to help the schools with the growth of Fairfield. The competition has fun math questions for kids to solve. • Annual July 4th Parade – Always look for their signature red convertible car! (Fun Fact: Cindy used to help organize the parade back in the late 1990s!) • Fairfield Sports Association – They have an Opening Day booth and are team sponsors. • Santa Claus & Mrs. Claus Drive-By during Covid • Easter Bunny Drive Around – The Boutwell Team brought the Easter Bunny to Fairfield the 1st year Covid hit and took Easter Bunny photos with hundreds of kids. • Cereal Drive during Covid – The Boutwell Team volunteered with Cy-Fair Helping Hands to gather cereal boxes for their food pantry.

• Teacher appreciation lunches and treats are provided yearly by the Boutwell Team.

That's a convenience you can't put a price on, especially being a realtor.

• Giant Pumpkin Contest at Andy's Kitchen – They picked several area businesses to help during Covid; Andy's Kitchen was one of them.

Nathan Lalonde – Fairfield Resident and Agent

• Cy-Fair Helping Hands – Donated $10,000 to Cy-Fair Helping Hands from their listings in 2021. You have likely run into some Fairfield residents who work with The Boutwell Team. If not, let me introduce you to three local agents: Emily McHugh – Fairfield Resident and Agent "I love living the Fairfield life! I'm Emily McHugh, wife and mother of three boys. Seven years ago, my family and I moved to Fairfield to capitalize on the highlyranked neighborhood schools. When we first moved here, all that was at the front of Fairfield was Kroger, HEB, and the outlets. Everything is literally at our fingertips now, from restaurants and shopping to hospitals and churches. There isn't a need to leave our Fairfield bubble. And now, since the Grand Parkway is open, I can get to either Katy or The Woodlands in under 25 minutes."

"I moved into Fairfield in 1989 and we were one of the first 200 homes in the neighborhood. I've had the opportunity to watch Fairfield grow and develop over 32 years and, in my opinion, I feel there's no neighborhood like it. Many families that were original homeowners in the late '80s are still in the area and have kids that have settled in the community, adding to the feeling that it's one big family. I love being a realtor in this neighborhood and showing our community to people looking to purchase a home." Clayton Stiba – Fairfield Resident and Agent "My wife and I moved to Fairfield 10 years ago and loved the family-friendly design of Fairfield, the excellent schools, and how easy it is to get around in the neighborhood. Additionally, there was so much more that the community provided to its residents including kids' sports and other activities. What an amazing place to call home!"

Around Fairfield A message from your editor "April is the kindest month. April gets you out of your head and out working in the garden."- Marty Rubin.

looking for a little more encouragement to get in shape, read Stephen Bartholomew's latest pep talk.

Plus, April’s warm weather gives you new incentive to explore Fairfield's beautiful trails and possibly take a few moments to sit and count how many turtles can sun on one rock or watch the ducks waddle to the lake.

I have two options for the May issue. The first is one I came up with last night. When I get information in my sleep, it is usually great stuff. I will throw this out to my audience and see if I get a response.

We have great stories for you this month. As you can see, Peter Cottontail will be making the rounds on April 9th in a new high-tech way. Find out more in our cover story. Opening Day at the ballpark was a huge success. We have lots of photos to help you enjoy it second-hand if you missed it. As you know, Mother's Day is in May. I would like to hear from children and grandchildren who want to acknowledge their mom, grandmother, aunt, or surrogate mom. Please send me a photo and about three paragraphs telling me how wonderful she is to jackiedevine@ peelinc.com. I will need the information early to see if I have enough for an article. So please, send no later than April 1st to appear in the May issue of the Gazette or The Beacon.

If the response is good, I will go with my salute to graduates in June. If not, I will honor them in May and June, like always. Please send me a photo and a paragraph or two which includes their name, hobbies, accomplishments, and what they will be doing as they move along the path of this exciting journey that we call life. Finally, remember to send me any uplifting and encouraging stories you come across. Don't like to write? Not to worry, send me the tip, I'll follow up. Thank you for your readership, and when possible, please patronize our advertisers. I hope your April is delightful and memorable...

It Is Never Too Late To Get in Shape Contributed by Stephen Bartholomew

“Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.” ~ Edward Stanley Losing weight as we age can seem like a struggle. As we get older, it’s no secret that the infamous middle-aged spread becomes more pronounced. What’s more, the health problems that come with being overweight, such as high blood pressure and other cardiovascular issues, are also compounded with age. We have plenty of evidence right in our community that it’s never too late to start. Just pay attention to how many people, young and old alike, you find walking our trails and around our lakes, exercising at the FAC, playing pickleball, or taking water aerobics. Incorporating just 15 minutes of moderate exercise daily — such as walking one mile —will burn up to 100 extra calories (assuming you don’t consume excess calories in your diet afterward). Burning 700 calories a week can yield up to 10 pounds of weight loss over a year. Chip Whitley, one of our Cypress residents, has an even better success story than that. Chip is a busy business owner and father who spends much of his free time serving others. Specifically, he is very involved in his sons’ Boy Scout organization. What drove Chip to get in shape was his desire to be a great dad. He had always thought, “You don’t need to be fit or healthy to be a good dad, so why waste time?” That was before he found out he was over the weight limit for a hiking trip that he wanted to do with his sons. One of his sons asked him, “Dad, what are you going to do?” That simple question made something in Chip click. He changed his habits and behaviors almost overnight. He was already motivated to be a great father and realized that being healthy was a big part of that. He wasn’t simply working out to look better. He was doing it for something meaningful to him, specifically, his kids. We all have different things that motivate us. If you haven’t been taking care of yourself physically, it is because you haven’t found a good reason yet, a “why.” I’m here to tell you that the “why” is in you; you just have to look for it. Once you find it, you will, like Chip, be unstoppable. You can reach Stephen Bartholomew, fitness behavior change coach, at https://www.facebook.com/stephen.bartholomew.522, or Yourtrainerstephen@gmail.com, 832-943-7822.

Around Fairfield

Baseball Season is Upon Us By Jackie Devine

Opening Day comes once a year and, when it does, Fairfield comes alive with energy and excitement. If you were out and about on March 5th, you discovered that Fairfield was all a flurry with scores of people reveling in the memories of years past and celebrating the upcoming season. Over two thousand players, coaches, umpires, and spectators enjoyed the parade, attended opening ceremonies, participated in games, and rooted for their favorite teams. Opening Day was a perfect venue for highlighting last year’s accomplishments and honoring team achievements. Two Salyards Middle School 8th grade choir members, Melina Simmons and Delaney Diego of the Varsity Treble Choir, sang the National Anthem. The singers were introduced by the Voice of the Astros, retired professional baseball announcer Bill Brown. Melina and Delaney beautifully represented Salyards and the Choir Department. The Fairfield Sports Association dedicated a field in honor of former coach Chad Ourano, who died of COVID last year. Ourano’s oldest son Aiden’s Boy Scout troop conducted the flag ceremony and his brothers—Anson, Aron, and Adler—threw out the first baseball pitches of the season. Their mom, Jenna, threw out the first softball pitch to catcher Chris Hansen. The photos below contributed by Andy Correa, Cindy Boutwell, Melanie Diego of Melanie Taylor Voiceovers, Susana Anasus, and me, Jackie Devine, your in-house photographer.

Our next Fundraiser Activity is hosting the Fairfield Resident Spring Garage Sale Fundraiser on April 2nd, the first Saturday in April. Fairfield has a no-garage sale policy but generously allows us to do two Resident Garage Sales per year (Fall/Spring) on a coordinated day. We provide a map of participants online, advertise in local newsletters/publications, and provide neighborhood signage to bring in the buyers. The Garage Sale is a fundraiser for our organization so we ask for a donation of $25 for the advertisement and map. We are a non-profit organization so all of the money goes right back into our wonderful neighborhood. Our charities are all of the Fairfield schools, the Fire Department, and the Constables. On March 5th, some of our members enjoyed going to the Azalea Trials and to lunch at Tiny Boxwoods. Some of the azaleas were blooming and lunch was wonderful. This summer we will host the Annual Fairfield 4th of July Parade on Monday July 4th, 2022. Line-up begins at Ault Elementary at 8:30am and the Parade starts at 9:00am. Following the Parade, we will host The 4th@Fairfield with vendor booths, food trucks, bounce houses, music, and more! Everyone is invited!!! Interested in joining or want to know more? Kirk ES, ALC-East, Good Shepherd UMC establish Adopt-a-School partnership Representatives from Good Shepherd United Methodist Church visited the staffs at Kirk Elementary School and ALC-East on Feb. 18 to officially announce their Adopt-a-School partnerships with the two campuses. CFISD’s Adopt-a-School program pairs schools with community organizations and business partners to utilize resources of the community to strengthen and enrich the quality of education for students. Good Shepherd United Methodist Church is already an active community partner with CFISD, previously establishing an additional partnership with Danish Elementary School. “We have a large number of teachers and education professionals in the church, so we have a special heart for schools and for kids,” said Matthew Neely, Good Shepherd United Methodist Church pastor. “We’re also the type of church that wants to impact the community and this is a simple way to do that—encouraging teachers, hopefully mentoring and reading to kids, and just doing all these things that we Copyright © 2022 Peel, Inc.

can do to help education go beyond the four walls of the classroom. It’s sending people where they already have a passion and interest, and they’re great ambassadors inside the church.” Longstanding relationships helped bring the partners together. Good Shepherd Associate Pastor Ben Burnside is married to Leah Burnside, a third grade teacher at Kirk. “It feels awesome to have people that chose to support our community, be part of our community and love on our people,” said Dr. Jennifer Bell, Kirk Elementary School principal. “This gives our students and staff a broader connection. The unique thing about Kirk is most of our kids are bussed to school, so for them to feel like someone wants to be part of them and make those connections is very important.” For more information on the Adopt-a-School program, contact Dawn Tryon, director of community engagement, at 281-894-3950 or dawn. tryon@cfisd.net.
