Around Fairfield

Baseball Season is Upon Us By Jackie Devine

Opening Day comes once a year and, when it does, Fairfield comes alive with energy and excitement. If you were out and about on March 5th, you discovered that Fairfield was all a flurry with scores of people reveling in the memories of years past and celebrating the upcoming season. Over two thousand players, coaches, umpires, and spectators enjoyed the parade, attended opening ceremonies, participated in games, and rooted for their favorite teams. Opening Day was a perfect venue for highlighting last year’s accomplishments and honoring team achievements. Two Salyards Middle School 8th grade choir members, Melina Simmons and Delaney Diego of the Varsity Treble Choir, sang the National Anthem. The singers were introduced by the Voice of the Astros, retired professional baseball announcer Bill Brown. Melina and Delaney beautifully represented Salyards and the Choir Department. The Fairfield Sports Association dedicated a field in honor of former coach Chad Ourano, who died of COVID last year. Ourano’s oldest son Aiden’s Boy Scout troop conducted the flag ceremony and his brothers—Anson, Aron, and Adler—threw out the first baseball pitches of the season. Their mom, Jenna, threw out the first softball pitch to catcher Chris Hansen. The photos below contributed by Andy Correa, Cindy Boutwell, Melanie Diego of Melanie Taylor Voiceovers, Susana Anasus, and me, Jackie Devine, your in-house photographer.
