HOA Oak Wilt Policy Prohibits Pruning Oaks February 1 – June 30

Post Winter & Freezing Temperatures Residential Landscaping Tips Submitted by Jordan Johnston

Due to the freezing temperatures the past months, plant materials have taken a hard hit. Length of cold spells, sudden temperature changes and wind all contributed to plant damage. The way forward for many of your plants is to do a rejuvenation pruning to remove freeze damage, dead plant tissue, overgrown or unbalanced limbs or branches so the plant can grow new, vigorous tissue. For rejuvenation: The Steiner Ranch Master Association (SRMA) and Steiner Ranch Residential Owners’ Association (SRROA) each have oak wilt policies which residents are responsible for following. The policies specifically state that oak tree pruning is prohibited from February 1 – June 30, as this is the period in which oaks are most at risk of infection. To view the policy in its entirety, visit the Steiner Ranch HOA website and click ‘FAQS’ from the top menu, then ‘Oak Wilt Policy’. Reduce The Chance For Spreading Oak Wilt Know When NOT to Prune - No pruning/trimming oaks from February 1st through June 30th. Paint – Always paint fresh oak wounds immediately after pruning with wound dressing or latex paint regardless of season. Sterilize Pruning Tools – Clean all pruning tools with 10% bleach solution or Lysol between sites and trees. Properly Dispose of Red Oak Debris – Debris from diseased red oaks should be immediately chipped or burned.

• First, remove all dead branches, stems and other dead plant tissue. • Following removal, evaluate the appearance of the plant. If the plant does not retain its natural shape, then further cut back may be needed to improve plant shape. • Rejuvenation works best on multi-stemmed, twiggy and deciduous shrubs. It is also great for perennials and ornamental grasses. Most perennials and ornamental grasses can be cut back to a height of 4 to 6 inches. Plants that require rejuvenation can be hard pruned all at once during early spring or pruned gradually taking off a small amount of the plant at any one time beginning in spring and ending in the summer. Pruning at the wrong time can cause serious stress for your plants. Prune in early spring before bud break and you will be successful. Fertilize all of your plants after pruning to encourage fast recovery and vigorous growth. You will find that this makeover will greatly improve your landscape appearance as plants regrow and rejuvenate.

If uncertain about trimming, consult a Texas oak wilt certified arborist, an oak wilt specialist from a city, county or state government agency such as the Texas Forest Service or Texas AgriLife Extension Service, or visit texasoakwilt.org.

Well, Spring has finally arrived in Central Texas. If you’re like me, you’ve probably been hitting the trails every weekend. The warm weather has also brought out a lot of wildlife, including some with a bad reputation. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, April is also the start of rattlesnake season with more activity as they begin to forage and look for a mate. Since they're cold-blooded and hibernate during winter, rattlesnakes typically begin emerging from their dens in early to mid-spring, so they should be coming out this month. In Central Texas, the western diamondback is most common and easily identified by the black and white bands on its tail, and a triangular shaped head. If it doesn’t have the bands, then it's more likely a common rat snake which is harmless. Make sure to watch your step while hiking, especially in rocky areas like in the Hill Country and Steiner Ranch. If you do happen upon a snake, back away slowly and leave it plenty of room. Also, this is a good time of year to make sure your dogs are on leash to avoid a nasty bite and emergency trip to the vet. I’ve been hiking the trails in Steiner for over 20 years, and while I have seen quite a few rattlesnakes during that time, I have never had one strike at me. Fortunately, their built in defense mechanism will give you plenty of warning if they feel you are getting too close. So get out and enjoy the trails and hopefully you’ll get an opportunity to see one from a safe distance. If you enjoy the trails as much as we do on the Trails Committee, why not join us during our monthly trail maintenance events, held the fourth Sunday of each month. Visit the Steiner Ranch Trail Committee Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/srtrailcommittee) for times, locations and more details. As always, I hope to see you out on the trails soon.
