Friendly Reminders
Please remember and share with all family members the following: • GREENBELT CUTTING & CONSTRUCTION IS PROHIBITED Greenbelts in Steiner Ranch are private property of the HOA. Cutting trees, constructing forts or fire pits, and any other activity which damages greenbelts is prohibited and may result in fines and penalties.
(Pictured from left to right: Dan Hartman, Wendy Gray, Debbie Tanner-Jacobs, Meredith Hamrick, Terry Friggel) The Steiner Ranch Residential Owners’ Association held its Annual Meeting and Election on April 6, 2022 at Towne Square Community Center. Three SRROA homeowners submitted their bios for consideration and participated in the election, which sought to fill two Board of Director seats. Homeowners re-elected incumbent Terry Friggel and incumbent Wendy Gray. Thirty six percent of SRROA homeowners voted, with the majority voting online. The SRROA Board of Directors meet monthly on the last Thursday of the month at 6:00pm. Ranch Record - April 2022
The purpose of the SRROA Board of Directors is to govern the SRROA community, overseeing: • Finances – association budget, cash flow, and assessment collection. • Contracts – maintenance, management, facilities usage, etc. • Management – staff oversight, upkeep of amenities. • Legal – oversight of enforcement of governing documents including rules, regulations, policy enforcement, holding meetings and elections. To reach the SRROA Board of Directors, please email management directly at srowners@ ciramail.com
• FIRES ARE PROHIBITED Fires are absolutely prohibited in Steiner Ranch greenbelts. The topography and green space of Steiner Ranch is conducive to fires. Federal rules regarding management of the Balcones Canyonlands (which borders Steiner Ranch) impose significant restrictions on activities that may affect wildlife therein. Serious penalties for violation can be imposed by federal officials. • MOTORIZED VEHICLES ARE PROHIBITED Motorized vehicles are not allowed in greenbelt areas or trails as they pose a safety hazard to walkers and bikers. They also damage the trails, which the Trails Committee and other volunteers graciously maintain. Should you observe anyone vandalizing the greenbelts or operating a motorized vehicle on the trails, please immediately contact the Travis County Sherriff’s Department.

Ranch Record - April 2022
The Steiner Ranch Residential Owners’ Association (SRROA) Board of Directors highlighted key accomplishments and future projects at last month’s Annual Meeting and Election. Despite challenges related to the 2021 winter storm and worldwide pandemic, the board was able to successfully complete the following projects, initiatives and enhancements: • Ended FY21 with Operating Surplus: The SRROA ended the year with a surplus due to disciplined board fiscal oversight as well as an insurance disbursement due to winter storm damages. • Approved FY22 Budget: BOD approved a fiscally sound FY22 budget. • Improved Resident Response Times: The BOD identified management response time issues and worked to ensure homeowner calls and emails were answered in a timely manner. Because of this initiative, overall call volume decreased by 41% and emails decreased by 33%. Timely management response led to fewer repeat calls/ emails. • Negotiated Weekly Recycling: The BOD renegotiated its contract with Texas Disposal Systems (TDS) to include weekly recycling pick-up. Note: Monthly SRROA assessments total $72, of which $22 is allocated to trash & recycling pick-up. $2 is allocated to the SRROA Reserve Fund for potential association replacement and repair costs, and $48 is allocated to association operations. Trash and recycling costs are not included in many other association HOA dues. • Added Playground Equipment: A new teeter totter and two merry-go-round apparatuses were installed at John Simpson Park, along with a large sandbox. • Installed Kiddie Mulch: Kiddie mulch was added to the John Simpson playground. • Installed Weed Barriers @ Volleyball Court: The court was reworked with new weed barriers. • Improved Lighting: Tennis & basketball court lights were upgraded to LED. • Resurfaced JS Basketball Court: The basketball court was resurfaced. • Pool Decking Repair: Significant decking repair around the John Simpson pool began last month and may continue into May. • Repaired Fencing: Repairs to fencing were made around the pool. • Trimmed Trees: Extensive tree trimming at the John Simpson playground and throughout the community was completed last fall. • Rejuvenated Picnic Tables: Picnic tables at the park were sanded and stained. • Perennials Planted @ Monuments: Perennial plantings were added to all SRROA community monuments, along
with drip irrigation to various areas. • Oversaw Winter Storm Amenity Repairs: Repairs to the John Simpson pool pump, bathrooms and various valves were necessary. • Improved Landscaping: New plants and rock work were installed at the John Simpson Park & pool entryway. • Removed Dead Plantings: Large Agaves and cactuses that did not survive the winter storm were removed and replaced with alternate plants. • Replaced Sod: Sod was replaced at the entrances to Chaparral, Mesa North, Plateau, and Rocky Ridge. • Installed Reflective Street Signs: All SRROA street signs, many of which were faded and in poor condition, were replaced with TXDOT certified reflective blades. • Donated to Charity: Instead of recycling the old street signs, the SRROA BOD took donations for them in order to raise money for charity. The result: The SRROA donated $1,600 to the LISD Clothes Closet @ Four Points Middle School, Hope Austin and Community First! Village. Going forward, the SRROA Board of Directors plans to explore or move forward with the following: • Pool Replastering: The BOD approved replastering the John Simpson pool, which began after Easter and is planned to be complete in May. An upgraded quartz material is being used which will increase durability, longevity and give an overall added esthetic appeal. • Upgrading Pool Lighting: The BOD approved upgrading pool lights with LED. • Improved Pool Maintenance: A new pool cleaning company will take over pool maintenance in May. • Continued Fence Repairs/Updates: Fence updates will continue for safety purposes. • Drainage Solutions: The BOD is exploring options to improve drainage issues at the John Simpson Park & tennis court areas. • Explore Updates to JS Pavilion – The board will explore updates to this area. • Bike Repair Station: The BOD has been working with a local Eagle Scout to build a small ‘bike repair’ work area at the JS Park. SRROA volunteer board members oversee association budgets and fiscal responsibilities, ensure governing documents are enforced, and make sure common areas and association assets are maintained. The SRROA is comprised of The Valley at Eastridge, The Summit at Eastridge, Chaparral, Rocky Ridge, Hancock Hill, Mesa North, and Plateau. Board members include Debbie Tanner-Jacobs - President, Wendy Gray - Vice President, Terry Friggel - Treasurer, Meredith Hamrick - Secretary, and Dan Hartman - Director. Copyright © 2022 Peel, Inc.

SPRING IS PRIME TIME FOR SPREAD OF DEADLY OAK WILT DISEASE Texas A&M Forest Service
An infected oak can spread the disease to surrounding oaks via their interconnected root systems. When that happens, the only way to stop further spread is by digging trenches to break the root connections. Oak wilt also can be spread from February through June via sap-feeding beetles, which eat spore mats produced by infected red oaks. The disease is spread when those insects fly off to feed on a healthy red oak or live oak with a fresh wound. Diseased live oaks do not produce the same spores but they can become infected by them. “We’re talking about trees that have been in the landscape for a century or more. We don’t replace those trees overnight,” Houser said, adding that the death of such majestic trees can lead to drops in property values. “Preventing oak wilt is the key.”
The big, beautiful live oaks that line your street and shade your home aren’t indefensible. There’s a silent killer that at this very moment could be creeping down your block, one yard at a time. Considered an epidemic throughout Central Texas, oak wilt is one of the most destructive tree diseases in the United States. The infectious disease spreads in the spring, killing all trees that share its name, with red oaks and live oaks most susceptible. “A live oak is a great survivor against everything that gets thrown at it from wind damage to drought to insects and other diseases, but it’s a poor survivor with oak wilt,” said Texas A&M Forest Service Regional Forest Health Coordinator Jim Houser in Austin. Oak mortality has been noted since the 1930s, but oak wilt wasn’t confirmed as the cause until the late 1970s. It has since been found in 76 counties — principally in Central Texas though it’s crept as far as Amarillo and Houston.
A wound is created any time bark is removed and wood is exposed. That can happen with the simplest of tasks — planting flowers, pruning or even pushing a lawn mower over a bare tree root. That bare wood produces sap, which attracts the sap-feeding beetles, Houser said, stressing the importance of avoiding wounds in the spring, painting tree wounds year round and destroying diseased red oaks that may harbor spore mats on which sap-feeding beetles may feed and spread the disease. “You don’t want to have to manage oak wilt. That means you have it. You want to prevent it from happening,” said Houser, explaining that there was no cure for the disease. “An ounce of prevention is worth it to avoid starting oak wilt disease and killing your trees.” For more information about oak wilt and maps detailing which counties are affected, visit www.texasoakwilt.org, Texas A&M Forest Service www. tfsweb.tamu.edu have a tree tested for oak wilt through the Texas A&M Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic & Laboratory at www.plantclinic.tamu. edu. Preparing Your Family for a Wildfire Evacuation Living in Steiner Ranch means that during wildfire season our wildfire risk is very high to extremely high. Unlike hurricane season, wildfire season is not limited to a specific time period each year. A fastmoving wildfire can occur anytime there is a lot of easily ignited dry grass or dry brush in combination with low humidity and a strong wind to fan the flames. These “Red Flag” conditions are more likely during summer and fall, so now’s the time to put together (or refresh) your wildfire evacuation emergency supply kit and keep it easily accessible so you can be ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice.
Submitted by Brian Tarr, Firewise
Sign up for emergency evacuation alerts at www.WarnCentralTexas.org so that the authorities will be able to call or text you when your home is being threatened. Alerts can be via cell phone call, email or text. As you think through what items to include, consider the time it may take you to evacuate far enough to reach a safe place with a much lower wildfire risk (e.g. the home of a relative or friend, a safe hotel/motel, or a Red Cross shelter). Also, plan to be away from your home for up to two weeks; longer if it is damaged. Each person should have their own personal emergency supply kit; backpacks work great for storing personal items and are quick to grab. Storing other needed items in a tub or chest on wheels will make it easier to transport, but keep it light enough to be able to lift it into your vehicle. Consider the space required in your evacuation vehicle(s) for bulkier items like pet crates. To evaluate your preparedness, conduct your own family evacuation practice and see how long it takes to load your vehicle(s) ready to leave. (Aim to be ready to leave within 5-10 minutes at any time, day or night, and ensure you always keep vehicle fuel levels above ½ full during “Red Flag” conditions.) ITEMS TO CONSIDER INCLUDING IN YOUR EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT
•
Infant supplies
•
Change of clothes
•
Important documents (birth certificates, passports, pet vaccination records, home inventory, insurance policy docs., etc.)
•
An extra set of car keys (all vehicles)
•
Prescriptions or special medications
•
Spare glasses and contacts
•
Age appropriate child activities or games
•
Easily carried valuables, photo albums, or irreplaceable items
Remember, it may take several hours just to collect school children and get out of Steiner Ranch. Also, you (or your children) may have to temporarily shelter in place at home or at school. Also, you may have to move temporarily to a suitable neighborhood open space (e.g., school grounds, community center or golf course). Electricity, gas and water services will likely be interrupted by a serious wildfire, increasing the time it will take to make it safe for you to return home. SUGGESTED PREPARATIONS AROUND YOUR HOME WHEN RED FLAG WARNING ISSUED •
Gather up flammable items (patio furniture, cushions, toys, door mats, etc.) and bring them inside
•
Remove BBQ grill propane tanks and store them at least 30 ft away from the house/patio
•
To allow firefighters to put out small spot fires on any part of your property, attach available garden hoses to at least two outside faucets on opposite corners of your house (long enough to reach all corners of the property)
•
Flashlight and spare batteries
SUGGESTED ACTIONS JUST BEFORE LEAVING HOME DURING A WILDFIRE EVACUATION
•
Snacks and water for evacuation journey
•
Shut off the air conditioning
•
First aid kit, mylar blankets
•
Turn off pilot lights and shut off gas at the meter
•
Portable radio and spare batteries (in case local cell towers affected)
•
•
Cash and credit cards
Leave outside lights on so firefighters can see your house under smoky conditions
•
Pet supplies (crate, food, meds., etc.)
•
•
Personal hygiene and sanitation supplies
Shut all house and garage windows and doors, but leave doors unlocked for firefighter access
•
Face masks (preferably N-95 style)

Young at Heart News
Steiner Ranch Young at Heart is back! During Covid everything shut down. Thankfully, now our old groups resumed and new ones were added and are well attended. We recently had a fun Happy Hour at OastHouse with 41 people attending and all had a good time. So, if you are 60 or older, please think about attending at least one of the activities. It is a wonderful way to meet others in your community. No one is from Austin, we are here because of children and grandchildren or wanted to get away from where we had lived and worked. Austin is a nice place to retire. So we've all been new to the group at one time and had to make new friends, you can do it too. Our activities are Ladies Lunch and Canasta, Biking, Book Club, Coffee Mates for men, Bridge lessons and Bridge, Mahjongg, Euchre, Romeo (Retired Old Men Eating Out), Evening Canasta for men and women, Walking Group, Book Club, Ladies' Lunching Out, Evening Mexican Train for both men and women, Bunco, Wine Socials and Happy Hours, Ladies' Mexican Train, a Single Women's Social Group and now Pickleball too. As you may notice, there are groups where you play games, there are things to do if you want to be physically active, and there are activities that are just social. Look at the list, there must be something that interests you. We would love to have you join us. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Ethel Bradford at emb43@sbcglobal.net or Karen Steans at Kjsteans@gmail.com.

SPONSORS NEEDED FOR CONCERT IN THE PARK! The Association’s most attended event, Concert In The Park, will be here before you know it! Easter Egg Hunt Fun Returned To Steiner Ranch
The Easter Bunny was back in a big way on Saturday, April 16th this year, delivering 12,000 eggs for one of the most anticipated events that has been missing since the pandemic. This was the 28th year the event was held in the neighborhood by the Steiner Ranch HOA, and it was EGGS-STRA FUN!
The event drew an estimated 900 to 1,200 kids aged 10 down to toddlers and their families who scoured the John Simpson Park for colorful eggs to mark the first such event since 2019. The event also featured a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, balloon twisters, a DJ, pictures with the Easter bunny, BOSU Ball Balance Challenge, Kona Ice, inflatable Plinko, and Easter hats to color. Thank you to all the sponsors that made the event possible and to Travis County Constable Office Pct. 2 and Lake Travis Fire Rescue Station 605 for being there and supporting the event. Thank you to Young Men's Service League - Hill Country Chapter for cleaning up the park after the event. Photo Credits: Jose Valladares - One Media Company

The Event Planning Committee hosted a Father-Daughter Dance and a Mother & Son Dance at the end of March. These two special events featured a catered dinner, music, dancing, caricature drawings, and portrait photography. Approximately 170 dads and daughters and 120 mothers and sons were in attendance and made life-long memories. The Mother & Son Dance also featured a magic show that had all the boys mesmerized. The guests of honor were 100 years’ old mother accompanied by her son who opened the dance floor with a heartwarming first dance. The Father-Daughter dance also featured the appearance of two magic fairies who danced and posed for pictures with all the girls in while sprinkling fairy dust. A big thank you goes to the event planning committee members for their time, passion, dedication, and worked hard to make these events possible.

Steiner Stars Takes to the Pool for their 21st Season
Steiner Stars Swim Team will be competing in their 21st Season with the Northwest Swim Circuit in May and June. The two teams take to pools as far north as Georgetown in competition with 12 other teams of swimmers age 5-17. This season the two Steiner teams saw 108 new swimmers show up to qualify to join the two teams, adding to our returning swimmers to fill out a 2022 roster of over 400 combined swimmers. The team will practice at Bella Mar in the afternoons until school lets out when the practice schedule splits between mornings and afternoons. Meets will happen Saturday mornings in June, culminating in an invitational meet in early July. The teams and the NW Swim Circuit competitions provide a great way for kids to get a taste of competitive swimming in a fun and supportive environment while developing life-long swimming abilities and making friends that will last them through High School and beyond. Stars has been part of the Steiner Ranch community for 21 years and always called Bella Mar their home pool. This summer, you may see some improvements to the lap pool at Bella Mar as new starting blocks are installed for competition. The existing blocks, paid for and installed by Stars in 2013, had reached the end of their usable life. To maintain a competition-ready pool worthy of Stars and the Vandegrift Swim Team (which also calls Bella Mar their home pool), Stars worked with the Steiner Ranch Masters Association HOA to replace the blocks. The new Starting blocks are only one of the many improvements that Stars has contributed to Bella Mar over their two-decade history in Steiner Ranch. Stars would like to thank the Steiner Ranch community and HOAs for their continued support and encouragement as our swimmers spend May and June practicing and competing, making memories and developing life skills. Jason Yunker is the current Past President of Steiner Stars and can be reached at past-president@ steinerstars.org.
