Rio was a dancer at a workingmen’s bar in Maidstone. Martin Andrews (who’s name I have changed) a shady character with a violent disposition and feared locally, enabled me access to the dancers. Martin was the bouncer on the door and for all of the bad press he has recently received in the media he got me access into a world that many photographers will never be able to gain entry to in such a manner as I did. He drove me from London to Maidstone and then escorted me back. He was respected amongst the clientele and the proprietors alike and did his job, always checking on me, making sure I was ok.

The establishment itself was run down empty - not many men there - maybe we went on a quiet night. The silence crept darkly throughout the evening that at first created a feeling of awkwardness. This enabled me to photograph Rio on a 35mm camera with flash. Her eyes were wide - opened glance - starry intoxicated with some substance that endears girls with the confidence to dance on stage for not much money. Some of the girls were dancing to put themselves through university. I was unsure as to why Rio was doing it; maybe she was supporting her lifestyle and family. This is only my interpretation.

Her glare was startling to me and only after the film had been developed had I noticed that I had an amazing photograph. The quietness of the club enabled me to meet the dancers, photographing them on their cigarette breaks, whist waiting for their song. They’d chosen their own soundtrack to dance to. The club was bleak and by the end of the night I was tired, ready to leave. The girls were after glamour shots - so I sent them the rolls of film that I had - but never received a response.

I wonder whether the photographs are pinned up on the walls to this day. The club wasn’t quite as dark as a club I experienced in Cambodia. Here, women are numbered and men came in to choose what number they wished to purchase. For sure the girls didn’t make as much cash as they would have liked - but I am sure that we went on a quiet night - I think it was a Thursday. Images & Words by Gwen Brinton

Polaroid / face torn

A dirty Polaroid, reflecting a time when my own mental health was taking a turn for the worse. I was trapped in a loveless relationship going nowhere : torn between madness and creativity. Her body was just a body. Her head was cut out with a photograh of a dead, lifeless hand, hanging from the place her head used to be. I collected memories I wouldn’t call them tokens memories of a time when we lost ourselves and hurt one another, leaving a corpse to anwer the uncertain questions of how cruel you were to me and how I celebrate your angst ridden soul.

32

Dogfish As soon as he said his name was ‘Dogfish’, I felt an affinity with him and we played together, taking photos and posing on Kensington Park Road. He posed for me and within seconds he disappeared and the transient moment flittered through the streets and we were alone again.

Portrait of Tim. Root Canal Surgery I followed Tim to his dentist appointments, photographing the surgery. Tim was a regular of the Greyhound and we became friends. Tim had root Canal surgery and had broken his foot whilst being a few whistles to the wind. I took the photograph deliberately from this angle, homage to Diane Arbus’ Morgue Shots of dead man’s feet.

The atmosphere, which was electric ! For example, the main room was full from around 11.30pm til 3am with a diverse range of people dancing, sweating and having a great time, to soul, funk, psych and disco music, which most people probably had never heard before. Ultimately, the purpose of the night was to play great music and for people to party and that’s what happened.

Q3 what worked for you

1. In 1989 Wavey asked the Russian Government for a nuclear submarine. Apparently, they were sending some old worn out ones to the UK to have them crushed, so Wavey thought ‘Why not let me have one and I can instigate and run free trips around the UK coastline for disabled people who never get out or on a holiday’.

2. He received a letter from the Russian Embassy providing a phone number but when he rang it he never got past a Russian speaking Russian.

3. Wavey and his wife once approached Downing Street about allowing them to ride up and down dressed in full Indian gear and on a horse, as part of an environmental protest. The police in the area rang him back and politely refused permission even after Wavey offered to clean up any horse droppings with a dust pan.

4. Wavey had a trial for Newcastle on August 23 rd 1973 but they played him left back instead of an agreed right wing and also forced him to wear shin pads for the first time. He spent most of the game re-adjusting them as they kept going round the back of his leg.

38

peep | Flickr

5. Wavey has slept with Frida from Abba. Well, technically. In the early 90’s having received some letters from her, peeled off the stamps and slept with them on the basis that she must have licked them thus depositing her DNA. (He still worries she may have had a servant)

6. In 2005 the USA’s Urban Dictionary introduced a new word - ‘Wavis’. A ‘Wavis’ is a particularly potent drug trip. It is thought this somehow originated from Wavey having one of his tracks turn up on a USA compilation album without his knowledge. Ironic, as Wavey has never taken drugs at all in his life!

7. Mrs O’Shave, despite failed and unconvincing attempts by many other sources, is actually responsible for inventing the word ‘Minger’ which she did in the late 80’s.

8. David Bowie once gave Wavey a scoop, by telling him in 1978 that ‘Life on Mars’ was about parallel dimensions.

9. Wavey was instrumental in the founding of the VIZ COMIC and was originally its Patron Saint.

Gender Fluid Outside Oval tube station when I took this photograph. The person in this photograph was immediately open to having their photograph taken. Their bright, alternative clothes and hair struck me first and their ‘play’ on gender struck me in the moment, where we connected, for a moment and then went on their journey and moment passed.

41

Exit From London The original photograph was shot medium format on the tube. The frame has been cut, focussing our attention on you. Her lips were always accentuated and cheeks enhanced. A collaboration was a conversation, afternoon spent looking through photographs and preparing for an exit from London to Nottingham

Rocker I am a big fan of charity shops, retro fashions and vintage T-Shirts. This guy was a known face in Nottingham for his style. When he picked the rocker T-Shirt, it mirrored his style and I found it to be a comment on his style, creating an image within an image

Picking The Best An early street shot of a woman picking up fruit. She bent down all the way, legs apart in order to pick the best. Her stance makes the photograph funny. If you look at the foreground at the side, you will notice the shadow figure behind the counter. The fact he is in darkness adds another sense to the photograph, hopefully creating tension and uncertainty of what is to come next. Sometimes capturing the whole frame is relevantand important if it adds context to the image. Martin Parr inspired this shot. Peckham High Street London 35mm Film

INNER CITY BLACK AND BLUE Bamburgh House and other major parts of Pilgrim Street in Newcastle are to be demolished as part of the Core Strategy Urban Core Plan. This represents one of the most strategically important Newcastle city centre regeneration areas in the North of England. The project is being driven forward on the land owned by the Reuben Brothers who have an estimated net worth of around 18.664 Billion through their development vehicle Taras Properties.

Newcastle city Council say : It will help communities and businesses together, encouraging greater footfall to support all sectors.

Collectors Editions Twenty year old Trevor Nelson Flyers manipulated for the general public. The funniest thing about these doctored Flyers, was that people just picked them up and said “Trevor Nelson’s coming to Newcastle” and walked away with the flyer. Scotswood 1980s Massive thanks to John Quinn for taking the initiative and capturing a moment in time ! John has photographed a beautiful thing, a thing that you will probably never see the likes of again - Depending on where you lived back in the 80s, especially places like the ‘West End’ of Newcastle, this kind of thing was a regular occurance. They were something you side stepped, stepped over, pointed and laughed at, but never interveined with. God Bless those dogs for developing the waifs and strays of Scotswood. peep catch up with multi-talented Ferank Manseed. We originally asked him for an interview about his tattoo work, but we ended up getting a whole lot more. . .

Q1 What interested you about traditional tattooing opposed to using a machine.

They always interested me, when experimenting on myself I was shocked at how much less pain there was and they healed really fast. I never intended to be a tattooist, I just really wanted to tattoo myself. I got addicted. Completely self taught, there was nobody around to teach me.

68

Words By Wavis O Shave

Q2 What was the process.

I bought a machine and other stuff years earlier, but after using it a few times I didnt like it. I hate technology and opted for something much simpler. Working by hand was like giving me a wireless microphone as a singer. I loved the freedom, relying on electricity and cables sucks. I can tattoo anywhere.

69

Q3

w

At what point you think I want Words Bydid Wavis O Shave to do this permanently.

I don’t remember really. I showed tattooists the work I had done on my thighs and I got offered a job at a studio. I kinda already had the bug and this was a huge opportunity. It was at Inkslingers in newcastle, Nun Street. I was there for a couple of years.

Q4 A couple of years? Then T. Sharps? I’m asking about that because it was there I realised you were a Tattooist

Yes, I left Inkslingers and then Dan at Arthur T. Sharps offered me a job. Dan had always been supportive, and years earlier, gave me needles to work on myself. I then left there to work at Northside Tattooz, they opened a studio in the city centre and offered me a great space to work, as well as making tattoos in Newcastle. Ive tattood in Carlisle, edinburgh, Birmingham, London, Germany, Ireland, Cyprus , Holland, Austria, Belgium and Poland. I was a guest Tattooist at a lot of studios.

70

Q5 I remember you being really into Swastika’s and at first I was like. . . eh ? But then I realised their original meaning. So all going well

Yes, until my stroke. Unable to tattoo since May 2016 as I don’t have enough movement of my left side. Big part of my Tattoo journey. I was beaten-up by a drunk student and this caused bloodclots. He woke me up yelling in my street and I went out to ask him to be quiet and he sucker punched me in the ear, got me in a headlock and continued punching me in the neck and back of the head.

“ I was beaten up by a drunk student ''

About a year. the bloodclots in my neck broke up and headed for my brain. On the day of my sroke the doctors only gave me a 10 percent chance of lasting that night.

71

Q6 How long after the incident did the stroke happen.

About a year the bloodclots in my neck broke up and headed for my brain on the day of my stroke the doctors only gave me a 10 percent chance of lasting that night! It would take a helluva lot to put this flame out! I’m still in a wheelchair and recovery is very very very slow. Thankfully, Low at northside tattooz has kept my handwork area for me as soon as i’m able, I will return.

Q7 Has the past 5 years made u look on life differently?

I miss tattooing so much. I gave up all my other things to do it. I was very busy with DJ work, performance poetry and putting vocals on lots of different music. I was quite prolific

“ The only artist I ever rated was Garver ''

72

A few years back I started watching Miami Ink. I found Chris to be most talented amongst them and the most chilled.

The rest were not very good. Garver was known to me before he went into T.V. The only artist I ever rated was Garver.

Q8 As well as being an accomplished tattoo artist, your an affluent musician. Can you talk about the influences with making She / Inner City Black and Blues and Nothing Human

Inner city black and blues was a play on the title of marvin gaye’s inner city blues. I had already written a poem, i just added choruses. ’she’ is much more interesting, dare i say ‘i didnt write it!’ yes i dare! i wrote a series of poems called ‘red and green’ one line is in red pen and the next line in green pen. You can read the red/green poem or the red one or the green one! to write the poems i took lots of books from my bookshelf and arranged them in about 5 piles, referencing the ‘cut up’ technique of William S Borroughs i would pick a book and randomly open it at a page then randomly put my finger down

r

73

r

r

I would write out that line in one colour as i am the master of the poem. I would sometimes change the quote slightly or adjust the context. Then i would repeat the process and write down the line in the other colour I have about 10 pages of this shizzle man. It all sounds so profound at times i was in the studio with my friend Robert Braniff (he did all of the music) he asked if i had any lyrics, yes ,of course i did. i recited a page of the red/green shizzle and tried to give each line meaning. The chorus comes from a religious philosophy book and their context is god as a male. I changed it and made it female, that is why the track is called ‘she’.

Catchy chorus i thought. Now, ‘Nothing Human’ was instigated by Noel, one night i was at his house and he rang his friend Aemon and i rapped over his beats on the phone. Aemon was suitably impressed and invited me to Dublin to play a gig with him in the basement of a hotel owned by U2! Aemon was signed to their dance music label and the venue was mad - like Mos Eisley bar in star wars, water moats and walls with holes in them, like swiss cheese. Cool. It all went well and a few weeks later he invited me to perform wih him in Belfast, we were going to support ‘So Solid Crew’!.

“ All venues in England had banned them they were all reputation and no quality really'' Anyway, as well as me, Aemon also had a friend on double bass i think he was called Bruce, with Mike Bandoni on decks. We improvised and it went really well. Back home in Newcastle, Noel organised a recording session for us all.

74

r

The music on Inner City Black and Blues is by Smoove, I’ve made quite a few tracks with him in the past, again ,sadly, this one never got released. All 3 are very different, but all cool in my opinion, but i would say that lol

Massive thanks to Ferank for taking the time to complete this interview.
