SYNOPSIS

OF

MUSIC

THE

LEGENDARY

NIGHT

Words By Giovanni Spatuzzi

@ f u z z y _ w a r b l e s _ n e w c a s t l e

The atmosphere, which was electric ! For example, the main room was full from around 11.30pm til 3am with a diverse range of people dancing, sweating and having a great time, to soul, funk, psych and disco music, which most people probably had never heard before. Ultimately, the purpose of the night was to play great music and for people to party and that’s what happened.

Q3 what worked for you

Backlash was a hard-electronic music club night born in Newcastle upon Tyne. The night ran monthly from 2003 before it was laid to rest (again) in 2010 In the early 2000s, Newcastle generally consisted of three types of nights: indie, house and mainstream. It was out of a frustration for a lack of hardcore in the city that a group of enthusiasts came together and started Backlash. This collective energy resulted in 75 plus nights featuring 50 plus international artists. Backlash was notorious for its fancy-dress nights. The night I remember most vividly was the first Zombie Rave: everyone dressed as zombies, surrounded by horror visuals and dancing to ear-splitting drum and bass music, provided by DJ Hidden. When the lights came on at 3am the packed club was sight to behold. Backlash’s home was the Red Rooms (now No 28) but it also took place in venues that are sadly no longer with us such as The Stout Fiddler and Egypt Cottage.

38

peep | Flickr

At the time Backlash influenced others to start their own hardcore nights, most notably Rollies for Mice. Backlash still lives on the memories of many people to this day who regularly attended and forms a chapter in their life. In 2018, Backlash returned once more for the Empire Strikes Backlash Why-Aye Sci-Fi Rave featuring our friend Toecutter In promoting this night, The Crack Magazine referred to Backlash, unprompted, as the “legendary hardcore night”. To do Backlash any justice, at some point, I will write a larger article including chapters on spoons, the pig’s head, circular grinders and the river of fake blood.

NEGATIVITY I visited France to take a photographic homage to the city of Paris. I had never really used a 35mm camera before and thought I would trial and error my endeavours.

JOURNEYMAN

w

Words by Lee Robson My journey through boxing has been a long and tumultuous one. Spanning over 18 years, training with a then British champion Scott Dann for a brief period of time along with my step-father, to competing Amateur myself and then going on to train fighters at a local Amateur club. Fighting is the toughest of all sports and is a lonely adventure, yes you may have your team around you but you don’t have them in the ring, they may be there in spirit but in physicality, you’re all alone. From time spent being a fighter and coach I wanted to delve into the media side of the boxing world and I was given a chance by a man in America called Ray who ran a little site 1 called Stylezmakefights.

Youtube.com / peep magazine

50

It was then I realized that this was my calling, I loved every minute of it. After time spent with Stylezmakefights, I was approached by Eliud Torres in Puerto Rico who ran a website called Boxingpulse. It was there that I would interview the likes of Peter Fury, Enzo Calzaghe and many more. Life was great getting the job with Peep Magazine, getting to do interviews with local boxers, and travelling to gyms that I’d never been to before. Times would change for the worse though, slowly but surely the state my health was becoming an issue, failing to get articles in on deadlines not wanting to travel or visit gyms, even family I didn’t want to see, something was wrong and after contemplating to take my life, I decided to seek help from professionals.

After a long and torrid year going back and forth to psychiatrists, I was diagnosed with Bipolar type 2. Coming to terms with it was the hardest thing of all, getting used to medication with tweaks here and there over the 2 years wasn’t nice. At the time you feel as if there is no way out of it, you become an invert to everyone in fear of ridicule, embarrassment, and people pointing and staring. Those days were dark days that I never thought I’d see the light again.

51

eeeeeee But slowly and surely you find your feet again and with a solid routine, you can come back from anything. The love and support I’ve received was nothing short of overwhelming and it is for those people I stand here now, wanting to show them the person this has made me into and achieve things that should have been achieved 3 years ago. I would like to take the time out to thank Cliff who has given me a second chance in allowing me the opportunity to work with Peep again., it’s greatly appreciated.

Editors Note :

We are happy to be working with Lee again and pleased he is back on track with his passion for combat sports and in particular - Boxing. You can check out some of Lee’s earlier work with us when we visted a thriving Jobes Boxing Gym in the heart of the West-End , Newcastle. Look out for Lee joining us on our peep LIVE show that is in preparation for this year. In the meantime, check out lee’s Twiiter page below
