SOCIAL REFLECTIONS
w
As we mentioned in previous posts, we will be streaming our peep LIVE from Newcastle’s longest running underground club World Headquarters. We sat down with entrepreneur and owner Tom Caulker. Tom describes himself as an outsider and briefly mentions being one of the few mixed race kids in his school. As he got older, Tom became an avid soul collector, mainly northern soul and sites various styles such as Jazz as a major influence in his early life .

An interesting observation was made by Tom in regards to his attitude towards social media and brand building, describing World Headquarters Club not a ‘brand’ but a ‘thing’ and goes on to correct James Watling by saying :
“ If you think it’s a brand that’s because you haven’t looked behind it ''
He goes on to say, we do not have to do everything everyone would expect us to do. We do the things that we think are important in the order we think there important. World Headquarters is based in the real world, even though we have to have an online reflection, World Headquarters is based in the real world

Q1 Did everything go as expected on the night.
Byker Groove exceeded all of our expectations. In terms of targets, before the night we aimed for 50 pre event ticket sales; we achieved 94 and viewed success as having over 100 people attend. Around 250 people attended; filling the Star and Shadow Cinema to capacity and raising thousands of pounds for the venue, a DIY cultural space for Newcastle, which is totally volunteer ran.

Q2 Was there a highlight to your Byker Groove night.
The atmosphere, which was electric ! For example, the main room was full from around 11.30pm til 3am with a diverse range of people dancing, sweating and having a great time, to soul, funk, psych and disco music, which most people probably had never heard before. Ultimately, the purpose of the night was to play great music and for people to party and that’s what happened.
Q3 what worked for you
One of the DJs on the night asked us how we had made Byker Groove a success. Our response was a number of factors, such as a great name and poster design; promoting the event months in advance; using local DJs, primarily younger ones, with fantastic records; using the Star and Shadow Cinema, which is a fantastic venue with a great sound and lighting systems; and, keeping the ticket price at
ÂŁ5.
35
Q4 What did not work for you.
The only thing that did not work for us was starting at 9pm, as for the first hour and half the venue was quiet.
Q5 Would you do anything different next time
Following the last question, we would start at 10pm. We would also have, if possible, some lighter music in the entrance / chill out area of the Star and Shadow Cinema. People were leaving a loud main room and walking into the silent entrance / chill out area, which was too contrasting.

Q6 Did you receive any feedback from people after the event
We received lots of positive feedback from people on the night about Byker Groove. The feedback which resonated the most was at the end of the event when the lights came on to the last record, Silvetti : Spring Rain (Salsoul). When the track finished, two young women came up to us and told us how fantastic the event was and expressed that they loved the music so much to the point of not wanting to go to the toilet for fear of missing it!

THE FLESH

Photography by Anna-Lena Krause.
‘The Flesh’ is a series of portraits taken in the toilets of Berlin’s nightclubs. As an assignment in my first year at University, we were asked to create nude portraits. Since I was not interested in photographing myself or my friends, I decided to experiment and ask strangers at a club if I could photograph them naked in the toilet. 1

wqwqwqwqwqwqwqwqwqwqwqwqwqwqwqwqwqwqwqwqwqwq The project began out of curiosity but essentially developed into an exercise on trust. Going into a toilet with a stranger is a very fragile situation - I did not know them and they did not know me. I told them to undress as much as they liked, asked whether or not they wanted to show their faces, and they trusted that I would protect their comfort zones. This, to me, is fundamental to portrait photography: how we connect with others and how much distance we decide to leave. The club toilets happened to be the perfect place to explore that - since it is both a public and private space - it allowed me to be close from a distance.
