I N S P I R AT I O N
For inspiration I looked toward the work of Michelangelo's stoic scupltures and Matisse's vibrant paper cutout compositions. I was particularly drawn to both artists' specific work because I believed the same themes exist in the Art Annex's eventual purpose as well. As a campaign devoted to spread art to the larger campus, I felt the need to incorporate the feeling of a hardened campus without art. The materials and frozen sculptures of Michelangelo proved to reflect just that. In contrast Matisse's paper cutouts "Le Gerbe" demonstrates an unrestrained celebration of color and artistry. Therefore the choosing these two master artists as inspiration helped me to find the branding structure of the project.

TYPOGRAPHY + COLOR For the font choice I was drawn to the San Serif font ODIN and used several variations of it throughout the project. ODIN has a playfulness I deemed necessary in a font while also retaining readability and attractiveness. The color choices echoing throughout the project evokes a restrained and muted version of primary colors. To a lesser degree the colors are loud but just enough and compliment the campaign message of spreading art to the campus.

For the logo I spared no mystery and chose to forgo an icon based logo in favor of a text based logo that communicates directly to the audience. The Art Annex is largely an unknown entity on campus and I believe beginning a campaign with communicating the entire name of the organization will foster familiarity. In the future it is possible to move to a icon based logo once the campus population becomes familiar with the goals and aspirations of the Art Annex.

U S E S O F T H E LO G O The Art Annex logo can be used in a wide number of ways. The logo can be used in conjuction with the slogan "Art With Us" or "Reserve/Attend/Perform".
If positioned alone the letters "Art Annex" should always have space equal to the height of its logo on the top, bottom, left, and right. This gives the logo ample to space fully affect the design. The logo is best used behind a dark background however a white background is suitable as well. The slogan "Art With Us" can be positioned to the left or centered depending on the type of collateral. Avoid allowing other objects into the clear space of the logo. Also do not tilt the logo or overlap it with other items on the page or screen.

In addition to the print material, I added a digital component to the overall brand to embrace a changing demographic. The digital website is there to support and spread the message "Art With Us" implying that art is for everyone. The website showcases an "About" "Upcoming" and "Reserve" function.
The Art Annex was made possible by the generous contributions of the Okumura Foundation. Established in 2002 the Art Annex currently houses the Technocultural Studies department however students from all majors are welcome to hold galleries and performances at the Art Annex. From the studio's inception the Art Annex has evolved into a venue where UC Davis students can express themselves through art.
WITH Currently the Art Annex houses the annual shows of Asian Pacific Cultural Night, Bird Strike Comedy Showcase, and Sick Spits Open Mic Night. We are always looking to add potential student art gallery showings and student organizational showings to our eclectic mix of programming.

Users can learn more about the history and purpose of the Art Annex. They can view upcoming shows to get a good sense of what they might attend and they can reserve dates for personal art shows and performance through the use of the interactive calender. The website component is an important piece of the overall branding campaign as it extends the reach beyond physical collateral and into the digital arena. The website has the ability to reach more people consistently 24/7. Again the design of the site reflects the style established through the overall campaign.

Mobile applications are increasingly crucial for a sucessful branding campaign. The ubiquity of smartphones help to potentially reach an impressive number of students. Again the design is kept consistent throughout the entire branding structure. The mobile application's design is relatable to other pieces of collateral providing a cohesive digital component to the overall brand. The mobile application would ideally utilize the break point at 320 pixels to provide a universal display consistent through most mobile devices.
