PACKAGING INNOVATION In September, PEFC UK partnered with PEFC International and SFI to exhibit for the first time at Packaging Innovations.

The show was held at the Business Design Centre in London. Participating in this show was part of a PEFC-wide packaging outreach campaign which aims to promote the assurances that packaging made from PEFC-certified fibre, bearing the PEFC logo, can provide. Alun Watkins, who heads up PEFC UK, presented at a Learn Shop seminar on the subject of ‘Market Drivers for Certified Packaging’. If you would like a copy of this presentation, please email info@pefc.co.uk.

This year’s show was considered a recordbreaking success, attracting more people than ever before, an increase of 10% on

2013 visitor numbers. We were so pleased with the reception we received that we have already booked our space for 2015.

FOOD FROM THE FORESTS Lingonberries from Finland, maple syrup from Canada, venison from the Scottish Highlands, Iberico ham from Spain along with forest honey, porcini mushrooms and black truffles from the Umbria region of Italy, were on the menu at a drinks reception, designed to showcase food from the world’s forests.

Guest speaker at the event, which was co-hosted by PEFC and AB Group Packaging and timed to coincide with the Packaging Innovations Show, was TV chef Valentine Warner. Valentine is a food writer and cook with a passion for nature, the seasons and working outdoors. The evening sought to highlight the huge variety of goods and services that forests provide us with such as fibre for paper and packaging, timber, fuel, employment, leisure opportunities, habitats for animals, insects

SPECIALIST SCHOOL CHOOSES PEFC TIMBER Last month, 150 children with profound and multiple learning difficulties were welcomed into their new purpose-built school made from PEFCcertified cross-laminated timber (CLT). Originating in Austria, the spruce and pine CLT was sourced and manufactured by PEFC member Stora Enso Building and Living. Wayne Probert, the company’s UK sales and marketing manager commented that the material was increasingly being recognised for its ability to create an internal environment which feels welcoming and calming, particularly in education and healthcare environments. “In recent years we have seen a significant increase in the number of building projects using solid wood solutions such as cross laminated timber,” said Alun Watkins, National Secretary of PEFC UK. “This is fantastic news, not only because CLT is a great product to work with, but with the majority of CLT PEFC-certified, we know that the material comes from forests that have been managed in a responsible way.”

The three-story school located in the London Borough of Hackney was built by main contractor McLaren Construction and installed by specialist timber engineer Eurban, and is expected to achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating. Building with CLT enabled the build time to be reduced. This allowed the project to be delivered 20% faster which resulted in a 2% saving on cost against the total project value. In addition to CLT’s speed and cost-saving benefits, its ability to span large distances made it an ideal solution for the bespoke nature of the specialist school. Inside the school, each classroom features exposed timber on its ceiling and one wall. Timber is also on view in the school’s entrance and main hall.

EXCELLENCE IN FORESTRY For the fourth consecutive year, PEFC UK has co-sponsored a Royal

issued with a logo usage contract which expires at the end of a five year period. This timeframe was initially set to ensure that the logo license expiry date coincided with that of a company’s Chain of Custody or Forest Management certificate.

The winner of the RFS 2014 Gold Award for Excellence in Forestry was Moulsecoomb Primary School, Brighton. Awarding top honours to the school, the judges commented that they were delighted to see a school where, from the Head down to the youngest student, the importance of trees and the products utilised from these precious resources had been instilled. Head teacher, Charles Davies said: “Forestry and wood play an important part in our school life, from planting seedlings to managing established trees. We encourage the children to understand how trees play such an important role in our world, from providing ecosystems, fruit and shelter, to building materials, furniture and pleasure. We want our children to learn about and

care for trees. Being surrounded by trees also provides a beautiful environment for our school community in an urban setting. We are all truly delighted and proud to have won this award.”

Receiving the award on behalf of Moulsecoomb Primary School, Princess Obi-Roberts and Lewis James, with RFS Education Manager, Phil Tanner.

As more companies become certified and opt to use the PEFC logo, this continuous license renewal process is proving something of an administrative burden. PEFC UK has therefore decided to move to an open-ended logo usage contract, which will remain in force while a company maintains its certification. Should the certification expire or be withdrawn, then the logo agreement will cease to be valid. We will shortly be writing to all Chain of Custody and Forest Management certificate holders in addition to Certification Bodies with further information on this change of requirements.

CERTIFIED FLOORING

Stylish, durable and easy to maintain, timber is now one of the most popular and widely used materials in the flooring sector. Solid, engineered or laminate, timber brings a natural and elegant element to any interior and wooden flooring is widely recognised as a hard wearing, natural product and suitable for most building types. With a wide range of species, colours, textures and grain patterns plus a winning combination of sustainability and aesthetics, it has become a key material for building specification.

FLOORING AND PEFC-CERTIFIED TIMBER

is now being increasingly requested in the commercial sector. Hygienic and easy to clean in comparison to carpet, timber is regularly specified in healthcare and educational environments. This year’s PEFC Stakeholder Dialogue entitled Addressing Deforestation: Joining Forces to Stimulate Demand for Sustainable Forest Products will take place on Thursday 20 November at the Méridien Etoile Hotel in Paris on 20 November. Held during PEFC Forest Certification Week (November 17-20), PEFC’s 5th Annual Stakeholder Dialogue seeks to strengthen our collective understanding on consumers’ perception, engagement & commitment to responsibly-sourced forest products. Looking to the future, the event will encourage exchanges amongst diverse stakeholder representatives to identify new collaborative approaches and actions to support sustainable supply chains, stimulate demand for sustainable forest

products and strengthen the profile of the forest sector by better utilising certification. Up to 200 stakeholders are expected to attend. They will range from the forest sector right along the forest products supply chain – including forest managers, manufacturers, retailers and marketers; civil society groups; governments and international organisations. Discussions will focus on addressing deforestation challenges with sustainable forest management solutions, particularly the role of sustainable forest management certification. Participation is open to all but advance registration is required as numbers are strictly limited.

SAYS YES BREEAM continues to accept PEFC Endorsed Systems. BRE Global has completed the review of existing Responsible Sourcing Certification schemes, with PEFC UK and PEFC International collaborating to respond to the assessment. In September, BRE Global published a new table of BREEAM recognised schemes and associated points for the purpose of BREEAM UK New Construction 2014 assessments. Both PEFC and FSC score an equivalent number of points. For further details visit www.breeam.org/filelibrary/Guidance%20Notes/BREEAM2014NC_GN18.pdf
