Peg Perego, a big worldwide family. The story of Peg Perego is the story of an Italian company that has stood out for its enthusiasm, creativity and continuous technological innovation for over 70 years.

“In 1960, my father (Giuseppe Perego) realised it was time to branch out,” explained Lucio Perego. “He bought the moulds to make plastic cars with pedals in a new production plant which was built for that purpose.” Lucio Perego President of Peg Perego S.p.A.

Back in 1949, when it was established in Arcore (MB), Giuseppe Perego, the company founder, left his steelwork job in Falck (where he worked as a industrial technician) and started manufacturing hospital beds and seats for cinemas. When the first of his 6 children was born he decided to create transport systems that children would be comfortable in and that parents would find functional. The Italian company Peg Perego was born from the passion and technical intuition of Giuseppe Perego, that is, from the choice of innovative and high quality materials, combined with premium tailoring fabrics; a choice that has proven successful for over 70 years. As early as 1949, Giuseppe Perego created a versatile pram that became a stroller. In 1956, he designed a pram that goes up and down stairs, which was exhibited at the Fiera di Milano in 1962 as a highly advanced transport system. It was followed in 1975 by the Bye stroller with umbrella-fold and hundreds of other technological innovations also during the 21st century, such as the Book Pop-Up system with a bassinet that can be folded without being removed from the chassis. At the beginning of the ‘60s, Giuseppe Perego extended the product portfolio to include ride-on toys and most importantly decided to export Italian style and elegance abroad by developing new markets and creating new factories (without knowing the language) in Munich, Toronto, America and Brazil in 2001, where Peg Perego has become a market leader. The company has extended its market share in Eastern Europe, particularly in Russian and Asian markets.

The first vehicles were pedal-powered and were made almost entirely of metal with nylon details. The arrival of Moplen (created by Giulio Natta, winner of the Nobel prize), which replaced nylon, led to a style revolution. The new material, being cheaper and far more elastic, made it possible to create elements with an increasing number of details.

In 1972, the first electric vehicles were born with the Pines brand name (the result of merging Perego with the name of Giuseppe’s wife, Ines). The design of the first models gradually started to become closer to that of real motorbikes in terms of structure and proportions, although the frame was still mainly made of metal and featured relatively few applied plastic details. The wheels - now powered by an electric engine - became thicker compared to the previous pedal-powered versions. The motorbike in the photograph below is one of the first electric models produced by Peg Perego with the Pines brand name.

“My father had the right idea, he was just a few years ahead of the times.” Lucio Perego President of Peg Perego S.p.A.

In 1976, plastic elements became more common and were used more and more on the frame, increasing the product’s appeal and creating areas suitable for iconic pictures printed on stickers. The models of the time – which are well represented by the 1977 Traffic Patrol model – had an increasing number of details, ranging from racing motorbikes to police motorbikes, allowing children to live their dreams aboard their favourite vehicles. Over the years, three-wheel motorbikes have evolved considerably and improved in terms of aesthetics. Important dates include 1992, 1999, 2008 - up to the present day, when Moplen, commonly known as Polypropylene, has become widely used in the construction of three-wheel motorbikes. Because it is so pliable, it can be shaped in an unlimited number of ways. It is light yet resistant and makes toys suitable for use by children aged 2 and over.

Aesthetics have always been extremely important for Peg Perego - but electrical parts and ease of use are considered just as important..

“We must concentrate on what we know how to do well, and always do it better.”

The squarish shapes of the 1990s have evolved into increasingly softer, more aggressive and streamlined profiles, which are faithful reproductions perfectly in line with the real item, thanks, among other things, to the applied graphics. These products, designed entirely in Italy, let “young bikers”’ set off on an adventure riding a “real” motorbike, easily and in perfect safety - with the peace of mind resulting from driving a product that complies with the law and that has had to pass very strict tests with excellent results before production began.

2020: Peg Perego makes playing even more fun

Playing outdoors and having loads more fun is Peg Perego’s mission for 2020. The 2020 restyling of products includes features that make playing even more fun. Front lights and lights on the roll-bars, horn and engine start-up sounds for each model, plus pre-recorded music. Users of high-range models can also listen to their favourite music via MP3, USB, and memory card in addition to the FM radio. LED dashboards have an indicator showing the battery’s actual charge level, START button and, in the case of tractors, there are a flashing light and alarm beeper when reversing. All two-seater toys now work on 24V - for better-performing toys with greater duration, battery power and playing performance. #LetsPlayReal Ducati Desmosedici EVO

Over 70 years from wheel to wheel Lucio Perego, Giuseppe’s third child and CEO of the company, recalls his father’s courage and pride in transmitting Italian creativity abroad to a yet unknown market. Peg Perego is now established in 90 countries over the world and continues to create and produce Italian products for early childhood and toys in the two production units in Arcore (Monza-Brianza) and San Donà di Piave (Venice). Calling upon the experience and professionalism of more than 700 employees it directs its efforts with passion towards a single objective: making the lives of children and their parents more comfortable, fun and wonderful.

Social commitment and cultural heritage Good work means taking care of your employees. We embrace the social responsibility of guaranteeing first and foremost the work and wellbeing that our 700 employees (and their families) deserve. A sense of responsibility that is more than just a professional relationship and extends to the wellbeing of all our worker’s families, making daily life easier. This is the thinking behind the foundation of the crèche dedicated to our founder Giuseppe Perego and the kindergarten dedicated to his wife Ines Giuseppina (Zappa) Perego, active promoter of many social initiatives that have transmitted to children social awareness and the desire to preserve the beauty around us.

This is the basis of our commitment to preserve the cultural heritage of Arcore contributing to the restoration of many works of art, historical buildings and cooperation with municipal facilities in the area. In these very days, the project “Dopo di Noi” (After Us) is being implemented to support the Fondazione Colombo di Arcore (Colombo Foundation of Arcore). The building dating back to 1903 and the Perego home for many years, has been restructured to house the Scuola di vita autonoma per persone disabili (Independent Life School for Disabled People) to support elderly parents with disabled children.

In 2018 we embarked on yet another project, entitled “Bimbi no Stress”, in collaboration with the Policlinico San Matteo in Pavia. We wish to thank the Pediatric Surgery Department and Pietro Castellese for involving us in such an important project. “We want to make pediatrics more suitable for children, so as to stop them from feeling any form of anxiety or stress,” said General Director Nunzio Del Sorbo. “We will allow children to cover the distance to the operating room on board electrical toy cars, setting up a “driving” track in which they have to drive in a straight line and avoid any obstacles. This will focus their attention on the game and not on the surgical preparation procedures.” #bimbinostress.
