Light up the dark: Mini library in Shipai Village, Guangzhou Group work | Work for Tianzuo Architectural Design Competition Used Photoshop, AutoCAD, SketchUp 08/2014-09/2014
Mini libraries in Slums
Slum, as a temporary heaven for city dreamers, became the container to support fast development of the city. However it also creates spaces with low quality, such as with little sunlight. In this project, we chose a vacant land to build a temporary building, whose design principle is different from the residential buildings in the slum. The building is aimed at introducing light to generate active space for community interaction, which also helps to break the ice between people in an isolated society.

First Floor Plan
As urbanization goes on, some people are leaving the village for more opportunities and improvements, while others stay and construct their houses in a more denser way. Therefore both vacant land and high density maintain in villages, especially those within the boundary of cities.
Sixth Floor Plan
To utilize the vacant land as well as giving more public space for local residents, we designed the mini library for them. This is a botanic library for people to store and grow their plants. Also, to get more sunlight, mirrors will be part of the facade to reflect lights from top to bottom. This model is built using Sketchup. The plan above shows the dynamic change in building space and open space (using AutoCAD). The section of the building also shows the different scale of building space. There are large scales in the middle of the building (see section below), and there are small scales of space on the edge of the building (see section right). These sections are made through Photoshop and Illustrator.

Hengkeng Village Revitalization Studies and Practice Group work | Graduation Project for Bachelor Degree Used Photoshop, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Illustrator 09/2014-06/2015
Hengkeng Ancient Village is a wellpreserved ancient village with inegrated alley network and valuable buildings in traditional style in South China. However, unorganized construction nowadays from villagers is ruining the village pattern. Therefore the project is aimed at providing village morphology guidelines for future development. We generate open space system with programming on the site. The Hengkeng Ancient Village area consists of three parts: Beimen, Nanmen, and Songyuan. I focused on the design and planning on Nanmen site (diagramatic map in the middle shown in red).

VILLAGE FUTURE
Spatial reconfiguration : "from dot, line to surface" The "dot space", which is a metaphor for pocket space, is to be proposed for landscape improvement and new constructions. The "line space", which is linear space, is to be proposed for experiencing routes connecting with public spaces. The "surface space", which is a metaphor for vacant parcels, is to be proposed for either new constructions based on building typology regulation, or public space activation based on programming.
"Dot space"
"Linear space"
New construction with facade contrast to the adjacent buildings
"Surface Space"
For the whole area, some vacant land or open space can be activated by putting artistic works on it. The red spots gives two examples for putting the works.
Landscape improvement for pocket space
Provide shelter to transitional space
There are two kinds of "line space": line space generated by existing interior space and transitional space that is underutilized (above left); existing linear open space with little indentity (above right).
There are two architectural style in this area: one is the slope roof, and the other is the building with balcony. These two elements should be preserved by encouraging new buildings to be constructed with these two elements.

Village peace, back in my dreams: East Coast of Shiji Village Planning Group work | Work for Design Studio IV Used Photoshop, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Illustrator, Maxwell, Word 09/2013-01/2014
Existing Condition
Shiji Village has a potential for future development-adjacent to the village is the Huangpu Old Harbour and Huangpu village, which are developed as a tourist spot in memory of its historic prosperity of commerce and trade. Also the agricultural land in the north of Shiji Village can be a potential for rural tourism. Despite for potential economic development, we analysed residents' demand, as well as projected the potential population change. Based on the information above, our group provides design, policy and financial strategies to create a community good for living and working, as well as amazing in entertainment and recreation.

VILLAGE PEACE, BACK IN MY DREAMS: EAST COAST OF SHIJI VILLAGE PLANNING More strategies are listed to support the village development. For villages' physical development, we encourage the stakeholders to reconstruct the road system, design houses for different residents, reorganize the existing buildings and introduce new buildings. There are also further support to revitalize the area, including analysis and advocacy on people's probable activities in the area, new fiscal and administrative policies, and reestablishment on village vulture and festivals.
1. Circulation system redesign There is only one existing road
Add more connection between villages
Extend walking path which stretch in field
Add bus stop for electromobile bus, bicycle parking spot, and walker's resting place
2. People-based housing design There are three potential people staying in our site: villagers, company staff, and citizens with pastoral dreams. Villages' apartment will be provided for villagers, company apartment will be provided to company staff, and tourists' resort an pastoral villa will be provided to citizens with pastoral dreams.
3. Public facilities identified Shiji village lack facilities to improve the community quality, so we added parking lot, cultural service center, cultural square, and Shiji Kindergarten. Also, to support the tourism industry and nearby companies and enterprises, facilities for tourist were introduced, including bicycle parking spot, battery cart station, Dongi Food Street, Water-tour Harbor, Water Market, Food Plaza, Agricultural Education Base, and Museum of Tnaka. For nearby companies, there will be company staffs' apartment provided for them. Also, the field will be separated into private field (for villagers' use) and public field for public use).
4. People's activity-based proposal Villagers, company staffs, tourists, and pastoral dreamers have different demand in this village. Villagers and company staff tend to reside, while the other two tend to travel. Therefore, they may have different patterns of activitites in the village.
5. Regulation to meet the demand of stakeholders The policy consists of three parts: site reconstruction, field distribution, and housing tax enactment. The site reconstruction focuses on the fiscal management to ensure reconstruction taking place. Field distribution focuses on the use of private field and public field. Housing tax enactment gives a model about how to compensate villagers if their house is planned for non-residential use.
6. Village culture and festival programming There will be different themes for Shiji village in four seasons. In spring, there will be sowing festival in agriculture. In summer, there will be dragon boat race and water fair in June. There also will be summer camp in agriculture education base in July. In autumn, there will be temple festival in Huangpu village, as well as Guava festival. In winter, there will be banana festival and gourmet festival.

Transportation and land use response in Voto Nacional, Bogota Group work | Sustainable Urbanism Studio Used Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator
09/2016-12/2016
Voto Nacional is a site currently labeled with "violence and social disorder", so the city government is currently looking ways to change the social phenomenon. However, from our groups' perspective, we see a TOD development opportunity since it is adjacent to La Sabana Station, which used to be a national transit hub and, although underutilized, will be a key transit hub connecting to places within Bogota metropolitan areas. The project aims at La Sabana Station redesign and TOD development integrating regional business growth and local neighborhood improvement. These requires comprehensive railway system studies within Columbia as well as case studies on transit in other countries.
Vision: Bring in people to support the teritary industry citywide Enhance connectivity from regional to local scale Catalyze healthy socio-economic environment to Voto Nacional
11
TRANSPORTATION AND LAND USE RESPONSE IN VOTO NACIONAL, BOGOTA Studies on transportation includes regional connection in history, story of La Sabana Station, and its impact on Voto Nacional neighborhood development. This helps us to envision the future development either in regional connection or in Voto Nacional neighborhood.

Analysis on Philadelphia’s entertainment system and reviving program on Mill Creek neighborhood Individual work | Final project of Modelling Geographic Objects Used Photoshop, ArcMap, ArcScene 11/2015-12/2015
bike rack, farmers market, recreation facilities
Philadelphia Census Tracts
park boundary, historic sites
Philadelphia building map
Flooding information of Philadelphia
Polyline shapefile: contour
Philadelphia zoning map
Philadelphia waterway
Data Source from PASDA
In this project, I provided a series of people's recreation options when out of the cities. They may ride to the park and recreation facilities to enjoy themselves. They may learn about history in historic sites. They may go to the farmers' market to buy fresh foods. To see if it is convenient for them to reach these destinations through recreational cycling, I did a spatial analysis model on the accessibility to recreational facilities and farmers' market by looking into the density of bike racks, and looking for ways to improve recreational connection in Mill Creek neighborhood . The logic of the model is to sort out the accessibility of the following shapefiles (parks, historic sites, and farmers market) to three kinds of bike infrastructure shapefiles. This includes bike rack, bike trail, and bike network. The reason that I choose Mill Creek as an example is that mill creek river, used to provide environmental benefit for the neighborhood, was unfortunately buried underground for new constructions. As there are more and more public voices on waterfront rehabilitation, mill creek river will surely be brought to surface one day, and its impact should be incorporate with the existing facilities.
Steps: Analysis on Philadelphia’s “outdoor entertainment system” Figure out the connection between bike system and recreation areas Find out the distrbution of good picnic sites in Philadelphia system Change the Mill Creek as a good picnic site and recreation areas
15
ANALYSIS ON PHILADELPHIA’S “OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM” Method: IDW, kernel density, point density, visualization on ArcScene, OLS Analysis
Step 1: analysis on density of bike rack system To analyze the Philadelphia’s outdoor entertainment system, we need to analyze the density of the bike rack in Philadelphia. I use kernel density and point density to go through the test. The kernel density has higher accuracy in showing the bike rack density. From here we can see that the bike rack is dense in center city area, then along the direction of broad street. Other areas has a sparse distribution of bike rack. Kernel density result
Point density result
IDW result of farmers market and recreation facilities close to bike rack
To see whether the farmers market and recreation facilities are close to the bike rack, I used ¡°closest¡± in the spatial join within 1000 square kilometers, and joined the number of bike racks to farmers market shapefile and recreation facilities shapefile. I also visualized in a 3D pattern on ArcScene to see the accessibility of farmers market and recreation facilities. The result left shows that the accessibility pattern of farmers market (green) is not totally the same as that of recreation facilities (red). Recreation facilities has more accessibility to the bike rack than farmers market does.
Step 2: Regression on census track with farmers market/recreation facilities and density of bike rack in farmers market/recreation facilities
Census track that has farmers market (not in green) with the relation of number of racks
Census track that has recreation facilities (not in green) with the relation of number of racks
OLS regression on census track that has farmers market with the relation of number of racks
OLS regression on census track that has recreation facilities with the relation of number of racks
The famers market and recreation facilities are joined into the census tracts to see their distribution and the density of bike racks. OLS regression is done between the number of census track with farmers market or recreation facilities (dependent variables) and number of bike rack in census tract accessible with farmers market or recreation facilities (independent variables). From the results, the census tracts with farmers market and recreation facilities have a higher standard deviation.

FIGURE OUT THE CONNECTION BETWEEN BIKE SYSTEM AND RECREATION AREAS Method: model building-dissolve, spatial join, multibuffer, intersect, select, erase
GIS model for the analysis
Step 1: sor t out those parks, historic sites and farmers market that are near bike rack I sorted out the parks that are within the distance of 0.3 miles to their nearest bike rack, and the historic sites that are within the distance of 0.3 miles. I also sorted out the buffered area of the farmers market (which is within 200 meters) that are within the bike rack surrounding area of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 miles.
Step 2: sor t out those parks, historic sites and farmers market that are near bike side trail and bike network Shapefile “YFARMBIKENET”, “YPARKBIKENET”, “YHISBIKENET” are the ones that are intersected with bike network, and shapefile “YFARMBIKETRA”, “YPARKBIKETRA”, and “YHISBIKETRA” are the ones that are intersected with bike side trails.
Step 3: sor t out those parks, historic sites and farmers market that are not near the bike system in Philadelphia, and selection to the studied area Further, the analysis can be applied to the study area within Philadelphia. I now have the results of three elements that are near bike rack, near bike side trail, near bike network, and with inconvenient access to those above. Then I can get the accessibility result of parks, historic sites and farmers market within the study area.
17
FIND OUT THE DISTRBUTION OF GOOD PICNIC SITES IN PHILADELPHIA SYSTEM Method: dissolve, intersect, select, buffer, erase, slope analysis, create TIN
Step 1: change the contour to TIN file and present slope analysis
Step 2: find the accessible area of bike rack and farmers market for potential picnic sites
Philadelphia contour visualization (in TIN)
bike rack and farmers market accessible area
Philadelphia slope analysis
To analyze on the contour of Philadelphia, I need to transfer it into TIN to visualize the contour, and develop the slope analysis for the next step.
The picnic site should be accessible to bike rack area and farmers market, so that people can easily go to the farmers market to buy fresh food when they needed. People can also park their bike within the walking distance to the picnic site.
Step 3: combining the elements to find out the appropriate picnic sites in Philadelphia area
Bike rack accessible area that falls along the waterfront with a slope less than 3 degree using intersect
18
Farmers market accessible area that falls along the waterfront with a slope less than 3 degree using intersect
CHANGE THE MILL CREEK AS A GOOD PICNIC SITE AND RECREATION AREAS Method: georeferencing, select features, creating polyline shapefile in ArcCatalog, intersect, create TIN, multibuffer, editor, spatial join
Step 1: create elements in the Mill Creek neighborhood area
Contour Line and Mill Creek river
Contour Line and Mill Creek river
Contour Line and Mill Creek river
Contour Line and Mill Creek river
Step 2: changes in assumption of mill creek river revived
Contour change
Slope change
Building change
Zoning change
Step 3: the future of Mill Creek neighborhood
The burial of the mill creek river presented various disasters: the deterioration of the once-wealthy neighborhood, the negative influence to the building structure, and the abandonment of local housing. Although urban renewal plan gave a delighted future to this area, it did not take the mill creek river into consideration. It is delighted to see that some participatory process to evoke people’s awareness of mill creek river, and we can see that some parks were constructed along the mill creek river. Still, it will be a better idea to let mill creek river come back to life. The future of Mill Creek neighborhood would not be like before. People could go along the mill creek park to enjoy the beautiful nature. They can ride the bike along the river, and go to the farmers market to buy fresh food. They can even visit a historic sites to review the history of mill creek neighborhood. That’s what I hope for. Final result
