WEEK 8 LOGBOOK
W08 01_STUDIO REPORT
Because of the part of this detail is the roof that is difficult to observe, only a little bit of the real structures could be seen through site visit
TIM-08 EXTERNAL TIMBER PANEL Panel is a structural member used to carry horizontal or vertical load. Joints used here for connection are shiplap (Ching, 2014). Because of the exposure, some protection is also required for this material. TIM-08 EXTERNAL PLYWOOD CLADDING External plywood here is for nonstructural use and is installed here for ascetic reason. Because it is fully exposed to the environment for a long time, damages such as fungal attack, excessive drying or swelling could happen (envs10003, W05 m2). Therefore, it is necessary to do some protection.
INS-03 THERMAL INSULATION (ROOF) Thermal insulation is used with a vapour retarder. Its function is to reduce the amount of heat goes into the indoor area. The insulation used here is batt insulation, which is made by glass or mineral wool, and it could also be used as a sound insulation material (Ching, 2014).
(wiseGEEK, 2014) ‘What is Batt Insulation?’- Batt insulation can be made from fiberglass or wool.
RWS-01 BOX GUTTER + AL-06 FLASHING Water will flow along the flashing towards the box gutter, but if the water is full in the gutter, it will add more loads to the building. FLASHING

W08 02_LEARNING LOOP Timber doorframe: solid core doors (interior use, less insulation value) or hollow core doors (exterior use or used for insulation and fire resistance) (Ching, 2014).
Casing
Aluminum door: this type of doors are mainly manufactured at factory and sold as the whole door instead of small pieces (envs10003, W08 c1). Head

Ching, 2014, 8.03 DOORS & DOORWAYS, Doorframes
Steel door: usually combine with other types of doors while using (envs10003, W08 c1). It is a type of hollow metal doors (Ching, 2014).
Lintel Head
Jamb
Wall system
Aluminum framing: both domestic use and commercial use (envs10003, W08 c1). It is cheap, light and resist corrosion, but require thermal break (Ching, 2014).
Frames holdàGlassàimportant material for any openingà ensure energy efficiency - Composition: formers (Si) + fluxes (Soda Ash) + Stabilizer (Limestone) - Flat or Shaped - Double or triple glazing: n Double: better at control heat loss but not good at prevent heat transmission n Low-e glazing: absorb radiated energy (envs10003, W08 m1) Floor system Sill

Timber framing: mainly domestic use (envs1000 3, W08 c1).
Curtain wall: Hybrid system, load are carried around window (envs10003, W08 c1).
Ching, 2014, 8.22 WINDOW ELEMENTS, Window frames
Steel framing: flatter and finer, therefore more expensive (envs10003, W08 c1). Steels are either hot-rolled nor cold rolled (Ching, 2014).
W08 03_GLOSSARY APPENDIX Deflection: the horizontal distance a member spanned from its original position to the position under amount of load (Ching, 2014).
Door furniture: is the hardware of a door, which includes metal fastening and fitting, for example, the hinges, closers or stop (Ching, 2014).
Moment of inertia; is a geometric characteristic to reflect the distribution of a member’s crosssection area. = Sum of (area times the square of the length from the rotation axis to the point where applies load (Ching, 2014).
Shear force: if an object is under a shear force, this object will experience 2 forces that is opposite in direction (Morrell, 2012)
Stress: how the elastic object reacts after the application of an external force, unit: F/m2 (Ching, 2014).
Window sash: is the framework on a window where glass and panels will be installed, and it can be fixed or mobile (Ching, 2014).
