From a spectator standpoint, there could hardly be a better venue for America’s Cup. The steep slopes around the San Francisco Bay create a natural amphitheater, perfect for the toughest battles in the sport of sailing.

The schooner “America”
America’s Cup gets its name from the schooner “America”, which defeated Queen Victoria’s Royal Yacht in a surprise upset in the waters off the coast of England in 1851. When the victorious crew from the young New York Yacht Club returned home, they decided that the trophy would be the travelling prize in a friendly competition between nations. It would be over 100 years before a foreign challenger managed to seize the America’s Cup – and throughout history only four nations have won the title.

The knees take a real beating during a race. That’s why flexible kneepads are a must when it comes to gear.
This type of pulley was located under the spar on the Starboat that Pelle Petterson sailed in the European Championships.

Every little detail counts
Few other sports demand as meticulous preparations as matchracing. The crew must have a perfect balance of physical strength, tactical ability, and sound experience. The racecourse must be charted down to the tiniest detail – how the currents are affected by the tides, where the winds can suddenly die out. And most important of all – the boat itself. The impressive AC72s competing in this year’s America’s Cup were built under the greatest secrecy, undergoing rigorous inspections for more than a year’s time before they were finally launched. Another essential piece of the puzzle is the clothing. From extreme racing gear that has to stand up to hard wear and rough weather, to leisure clothes to relax in. In our new spring and summer collection, you’ll find both.

The magnificent J-yachts made the America’s Cup of the 1930s a pure work of art. Unfortunately, only three of the original ten J-yachts remain, since the others were scrapped for metal for the war effort. “Rainbow”, a replica of the 1934 AC defender, was launched in 2012.

In 1977, Pelle Petterson met his first America’s Cup challenge, as skipper on his self-designed 12, “Sverige”. Pelle and his crew managed to take themselves to the final before losing there to “Australia”. Three years later, they set their sights on revenge, but in an even semifinal, “Australia” once again drew the long straw. In summer 2013, we come full circle to the hub of it all with Artemis Racing. And third time’s a charm.

When “Sverige” was measured in Newport for the 1977 America’s Cup, they discovered that she was just a tad too long. The solution was to simply cut off a bit from the bow and move the forestay back.
