TRUE LEGE
From the sea to the mountains What makes a legend? We believe that it’s heart and soul. Because people never achieve major successes without total dedication. It’s as simple as that. Pelle Petterson is one of Sweden’s most prominent sportsmen of all time. He’s won Olympic and World Cup medals in sailing and received awards for his product design skills. Pelle has also been a passionate skier for many years and competed in both ski jumping and slalom events. Our latest collection has been designed for both on and off-piste, using new technological materials and well thought out details. Inspired by a love of skiing and developed in association with skiers in Val d’Isère – meet our test team and Olympic medallist Mathieu Bozzetto, who tell us about life in the mountains and what True Experience means to them.

Nickname: Bombastic or Bozz Born: In neighbouring Chambery, but has always lived in Val d’Isère Profession: Professional snowboarder who won most World Cup honours for France and an Olympic bronze in the parallel giant slalom in 2010. He currently works at promoting Val d’Isère, is an expert commentator on various sports channels and has helped snowboard manufacturers in designing new equipment. Background: Mathieu, just like all the other youngsters in Val d’Isère, started with alpine skiing. By the time he was 17 he was bored with skiing and started snowboarding, which had just become a trendy sport. Family: Mother, father and sister in Val d’Isère. Happily single with a 10 year-old son, Camille, who lives in the south of France most of the year with his mother. Secret talent: Is good at carpentry and building. Secret dream: To be a “high-level” surfer. Apart from snowboarding? Kite surfing, mountain hiking, golf, sports in general. What’s the best thing about Val d’Isère? That it has everything for a sporty lifestyle all year round. Skiing, hiking, mountain biking, swimming pools, climbing, golf and fishing nearby etc. There is also a good selection of shops, restaurants, bars and nightlife. Best run? Depends on what type of skiing you like. The Val d’Isère runs provide something for all kinds of skiers. Best off-piste? Difficult to choose, it depends on where the snow is good. Best restaurant? Le Lodge, renowned for its excellent meat. It’s situated on a side street after the first roundabout in the heart of the village. Best bar? Bar des Fous in the village, relaxed and cosy with live concerts at weekends. Best memory of his career? Without doubt the bronze medal at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010 and the reception received when 3,000 supporters got together to celebrate the performance. What makes good skiwear? Specially selected technical materials that work well and are well-designed of course. You can’t get away with just one item of clothing, you need different clothes for different kinds of skiing. What does True Experience mean to you? Always being able to enjoy life to the full and making the right choices. It might be walking in the mountains with my father or going fishing with my son. 7

Welcome to the Fall Line Bar Thomas, Josefine and Kajsa on the sofa at the Fall Line Bar, Route de la Balme, after a long day on the slopes. The bar is slightly hidden away from central Valdi and run by a gang of free riders. This is a good after-ski hangout with a cool mix of food and music. 15

Name: Yoann Saintemarie from Millau Seasons in Valdi: 9 years as guide, trained at ENSA Favourite run: Depends where the snow is best. What does True Experience mean to you? When I’m with good friends in a lovely, relaxing environment and sharing experiences with them. It might be in the mountains or when I go canoeing the rapids.
We woke early on Wednesday morning to fix our skis and skins at the Pro Mountain Shop in the village. Quiet so far, just a few morning visitors at the bakery nearby. We met Yoann from TopSki who was to be our guide for the day at the Solaise lift. He told us about the weather and snow conditions: quite pleasant, not much wind and lots of snow. The route would take us over Pont d’Iseran and Arcelle and further on down the valley. Patrik was ready with the camera equipment and the rest of us had loaded up with water and other energy sources. Yoann estimated the climb to last about an hour and then we would get a really good ski down.
We started by joining the Val d’Isère system, at the Col-Lifts, then we skinned all the way to Arcelle. A tough and sweaty climb, but at the same time breathtakingly beautiful. Endless white views where you feel at one with the snow and the sky. After a few micro rests and opening and closing our vent zips, we eventually reached the summit and finally time to take the skins off. There was a bitterly cold wind but the snow was perfect – just as dry and light as we wanted it. Quite a wonderful reward for the three-hour physical exertion, not to mention the lunch that awaited us at the l’Ouillette restaurant.
