The purpose of Pelletti is to gather all the environmental students together here in LUT to a tight community and find your way into the student life. Pelletti organizes many different events from sits parties and excursions where you get to familiarize yourself with companies from your field to movie nights and sports events. During the events you can make new friendships with other freshers and older students and get familiar with the student life here in Lappeenranta. So keep an open mind and participate in different events. I’m sure everyone will find events to their own likPellettiing.

Hi there, Pelletti’s new fresher! Welcome to the amazing community of LUT university and congratulations on your new place of study! My name is Olga, and I will be Pelletti’s fresher captain for the next year. I am in my second year of environmental technology studies. As a fresher captain my main job is to get you to know the secrets of teekkari culture and be there to support you when needed. You can always approach me with anything and to help you to recognise me from the crowd I will always be wearing a gray colored helmet. Me and a group of amazing tutors will be there to meet you on the first day of fresher weeks. At LUT university fresher weeks start at the last week of August and last two weeks. In the second week studies will come along. You don’t have to stress about that too much because your tutors will help you get started with electronic systems and course enrolments. During fresher weeks there will be lots of doing things together and you will come across new people, manners and information. You will get to know other freshers, older members of Pelletti and other guild members. I’d recommend packing an open mind, swimwear, party clothes, student cap and something finer like a dress or a suit jacket. Me and the tutors are eagerly waiting for you to come to Lappeenranta. An important tradition involving the cap is the teekkari baptism. First year students, or freshers, are baptised to be teekkaris on the 30th of April. The baptism happens by sliding into the lake Saimaa. If the fresher has shown that they are actively participating in the teekkari culture, they are granted the permission to wear the cap at midnight on the 1st of May. As freshers you will receive a fresher point card that has different tasks and activities related to teekkari culture. With collecting enough points to the card, you show your activity.
In Finland one of the most popular events among students is a sits party. Sits parties are essentially academic table parties that include singing, toasting drinks, food and dressing according to the theme. Sits parties have one or two toastmasters who’ll lead the event, determine the timing and length of breaks and which table will get their meal first. Toastmasters must be respected during the event and whenever someone is giving a toast, everyone must listen.
From your first day on campus, you will be seeing a lot of different coloured overalls on students. The overalls may be covered in patches or modified in other ways. The overalls signify that the wearer is a student and the color tells about their respective guild or subject association.
TEEKKARI CULTURE AND OVERALLS
The Finnish polytechnic students are known for their unique student culture and traditions. The culture varies from city to city and here in Lappeenranta our own traditions and culture are unique. In Lappeenranta, part of the student culture here is the Skinnarila spirit. It means that here we are one big community, and we look out for each other.
One of the most important signs of a polytechnic student is the white tasselled cap.
The Karelian polytechnic student cap or the Teekkarilakki is shaped like a hexagon but has a seventh corner on the right-hand side of the cap. It has a black tassel on the right side and red and black lining.

At the annual ball you’ll get to wear something nice, sing and dine with friends.
In the Pelletti guild room you can find board games, playstation, coffee, tea and nice company for sure!
Starting from fresher weeks you are able to meet and make friends from other fields of study also.

LTKY also organizes lots of activities and events together with the guilds and Inclubs.addition to studying, it is very important to have fun, enjoy life, and make a lot of memories while you are here. That’s why I would really recommend paying attention to all the extracurricular activities that LUT, LTKY and the guilds offer and make new friends along the way.
GREETINGS FROM LTKY
Dear congratulationsnewcomer,on your acceptance to Environmental Technology at LUT University! My name is Ari, and I would like to welcome you on the behalf of LTKY, the student union of LUT. You have probably heard already that the office of LTKY is where you can get the sticker for your student card and enjoy a cup of coffee in the lounge. However, we have a lot more to offer too. The mission on the student union is to make the life of students better. LTKY organizes advocacy and lobbying of the students’ opinion on local and national levels. LTKY also runs Aalef’s restaurants Yolo and Laseri as well as the small shop on campus’ main building. You can read about us in more details and see the several services we offer for students on LTKY website (ltky.fi). One of the main tasks of LTKY is to maintain and respect the student culture. At LUT there are nine guilds in total and more than 30 activity and hobby clubs. Finnish student culture is unique and interesting, and I really recommend getting involved in it. I would suggest joining your guild Pelletti as well as ESN Lappeenranta, where you can find more international students.
Lastly, I’d like to point out the beautiful scenery in Lappeenranta. I’m sure you will like that the campus is fully surrounded by nature; Trees, flowers and lake Saimaa. Relaxing and taking a little break is important and for that the nature is the the best place, in my opinion at least. And to keep informed before and during your studies with news and also more humorous stuff, make sure to follow us in our social media! You can find us on Instagram @ltky_insta. Welcome to our community, enjoy your studies and make memories that will last for a lifetime!
From this point of view LUT is the perfect place; The majority of students live next to the campus or within two-kilometer distance, creating lively community, where it is easy to make friends with other international and Finnish students as well.
