Thanks so much for your interest in our program. We are excited to welcome everyone to the ranch again this year. We loved having the sale at home last year and the customer feed-back was positive, as well.

The bulls will be penned on sale day by 11 a.m. around our barn. It will remain a video auction and will be broadcast on DVAuction again, just like previous years, for those of you that can’t make it to the sale.

This past year was trying, as severe drought continued. Most of our cattle handled things well, but some didn’t and are no longer a part of our program. You need stress and adversity to test your genetics and your breeding program. We’ve had plenty to test the last couple of years.

We have enjoyed feeding the bulls at the ranch again this year. They like the extra space, and I like the fertilizer they are depositing on our fields.

There will be sale-day signs at Hwy 85, east bypass of Hwy 23 and at 120th Ave. Navigation works most of the time, if you type in our address. THE RANCH IS SOUTHEAST OF WATFORD CITY.

DRIVING FROM WEST, NORTH OR SOUTH You will want to take US Highway 85 until you come to the County Road 37 intersection. Once on County Road 37 you will drive 7.8 miles to 120th Ave. The intersection is on a curve with an old school house and you should see a sign as well. You will be turning off pavement at 120th Ave and you will stay on the gravel and scoria road for 3 miles until you arrive at the sale location.

DRIVING FROM THE EAST You will be driving in on Highway 23 take the Watford City Bypass.

Once on the bypass you will take the first left turn onto 26th F for just a few feet. You need to quickly turn right onto County Rd 37. Stay on County Rd 37 for 7.5 miles until you get to 120th Ave. You will see signs and an old school house by the curve intersection. You will now be on a gravel and scoria for the next 3 miles to the sale location.

We have been big fans of Connelly Angus Ranch in Valier Montana for over 20 years. My favorite cow family at their place is the Marie family. We have purchased a cow and a featured flush from them in the past. The Marie’s have adapted extremely well to our environment. Hickory is linebred top and bottom tracing back to Lady Traveler 449 nine times. He traces many more times to Lady Viking 131, the dam of 449 and the Matriarch of all the Marie lines at CAR.

Viking 977 GDAR was the sire of Lady Viking 131 and the landmark sire at CAR. Viking GDAR 977 was a maternal bother to the great maternal sires; Rito 054 GDAR and Traveler 1148 GDAR. I have been impressed by the Hickory sons CAR have been selling. He is a calving ease sire that puts a lot of length and more performance than you would expect. They perform well and demonstrate agreeable dispositions. The bulls look stylish and the daughters look incredible. Hickory genetics will definitely be a big part of our genetic profile moving forward.

We are excited to be offering Resource genetics again this year. They have been my favorite sire group everywhere I’ve seen. We would have used him earlier, but we feel strongly that it is our responsibility to our customers to make sure the females are going to fit our breeding philosophy and our unique environment that we call home.

Reference Sire

Resource is a complementary mating for most of our cows. We have a high S A V Resource 1441 maternal calving ease cow herd. Resource adds muscle, rib, fleshing ability, and performance to our cattle. It is rare when a bull comes along that breeds as true as Resource. He has been bred to almost every kind of cow in the Angus breed and the progeny are powerful and extremely consistent regardless of the cow’s pedigree. Resource progeny are not only stout, but they have great breed character, and excellent feet. Resource will moderate frame size and milk. We are very confident these are “Badlands” bulls that will sire some of the best calves you have ever sold. These bulls will also leave you daughters that are easy fleshing and will add longevity to your cowherd. Resource passed away in November, 2019. We feel strongly these genetics will be timeless and in strong demand for many years.

Thoughts about

FERTILITY

I attended a meeting in Kansas City where we were discussing fertility in the Angus cow herd. Using the heifer pregnancy EPD as our measure, the Angus cowherd has reduced its fertility over the last 50 years. I find this fact very concerning. I started thinking back to all the recent conversations with producers that are concerned by their larger open rates.

I am sure this same observation would be seen in all of the major breeds in the United States as well. The first thing I thought of is if fertility/ longevity is the most important trait for the profitability of commercial ranches, how can nearly every other EPD be increasing and the fertility EPD be declining. How could we as breeders let our priorities so far out of line. We are enrolled in Maternal Plus to aid in improving fertility trait collection and improving accuracy and reliability of the fertility EPDs for the Angus Association.

I think there are a few reasons that this has happened.

1. Obviously, other traits are taking priority when breeding and selection decisions.

The industry has seen increases in growth, mature size, and milk, and improvements in carcass traits. I am not saying those traits don’t matter because they do. However, fertility can’t be an after-thought when making breeding decisions. At Best Angus, we have always taken a balanced approach to trait selection trying to improve our cattle, but we will not sacrifice fertility.

It is the first trait that we think about. We have sent a lot of beautiful cows to the sale barn because they were open or late.

2. The second issue is our national cow herd may still be just as “fertile”, but we have bred for an animal that no longer functions in the natural environment and needs additional inputs to breed in a timely fashion, neither of which help your bottom line. The result is the same; open cows for you, or a much larger feed bill. Our ranch and management style really challenges fertility.

This challenge is good for our customers (but an expensive challenge for us). The breed up on the females we have sold to other producers has been excellent. We are proud of those reports.

3. Not intentionally, but it is likely that breeders are selecting genetics from lines of cattle that have fertility issues.

Fertility has always been a front of the brain trait when making breeding decisions because it is the #1 economic trait. At Best Angus, we keep daughters and bulls from cows that breed up early to use for our next generation of genetics. When we bring in outside sires, we investigate the programs and the genetics these bulls come from to make sure fertility is one of their top priorities as well. We feel there is a body type that works in our environment as well. We want our cows to be wide bodied, but wedge shaped with refined shoulders and neck. Last, but not least they need to have a feminine triangular shaped head, a critical phenotypic indicator of fertility.

Building Blocks of a Best Testing Genetics

Philosophy

• The basics of breeding cattle is to concentrate favorable genetic combinations over and over again • There is a visual “type” that works in our environment. It is imperative we continue stacking that type • The dam is the most important member of a pedigree • If you keep stacking great cows, you can’t help but end up with a great herd of cows

The only true way to determine what genes should be concentrated is to test the animals under certain management.

• We do not creep feed. It is the best way to determine maternal prowess of a cow.

• Our cows run in big pastures and rough terrain. These pastures put tremendous pressure on survival instincts, libido, sound feet and legs, fleshing ability, and above all else, fertility.

• We winter graze as long as possible. Our cows need to hustle to find top forages, flesh easily and stay sound.

• We pasture calve, if the weather allows. Our cows need to find a place to calve, clean up their babies and get them up and nursing. We weigh and tag them in the pasture, so they need to be calm and trusting of me, or they find a new home.

Development

Our method to develop the bulls is slow and steady. On sale day our bulls would look more impressive and would sell for a higher price, if we fed them more, but: • We want our bulls to be hard and sound, so they can cover your cows and come back home in decent flesh.

• We want to feed the bulls aggressively enough so we can test feedlot performance and carcass traits, but we refuse to overfeed our bulls jeopardizing their feet and long-term metabolic health. We have customer reports of 10 year old bulls still covering cows.

• The bulls are developed in large pens, so they get plenty of exercise, making sure they are athletic and ready to go to work.

Hello, my name is Justin Dahl. I grew up on

Angus Ranch

my family’s farm and ranch in Keene, ND and cattle have always been my favorite part of the operation. I started in the registered Angus business in 2016 when I purchased four heifers from Martin Schaff. From there, I set out with a goal to breed cattle that are functional and productive in a commercial setting. My cows are managed in the exact same manner as our commercial cow calf operation. Doing this has allowed me to narrow down which genetics will work for the commercial cattlemen.

While in college, I got the opportunity to do an internship here at Best Angus and Quarter Horses. It was a great experience and I was excited when Pete offered me a part time job upon my graduation from MSU Bozeman. I’ve learned so much about the breed and business from Pete and Vawnita in the last two years and am thrilled to be a part of this operation. It is very rare for us to use an unproven outside bull. It is also not very often a bull like this comes around. We tried to purchase Tribute, but came up short. Tribute was an extremely impressive individual as a yearling. He crushed his contemporaries at nearly every important measurement. The Lassies are my favorite cow family currently at McCumber Angus Ranch. We are very happy with the Tribute calves. He is a pure calving ease bull. What has been impressive to me is the power that he puts into his calves in such a clean attractive pattern.

The daughters are what I was hoping they would be. They have deep sweeping rib, a wide hip, and clean necks. They are very attractive. I was pleasantly surprised last spring calving the first daughters. They were kind and gentle mothers that always knew where their calves were. They definitely have the look of badlands cattle.

EXT is one of the most influential herdsires of all time, with 38,000 progeny reported. His dam is the great Coleman Donna 386, the matron of the Donna family for Coleman Angus. This may be an “old pedigree”, but the bull has a strong EPD profile. I have been pleasantly surprised by the bull calves.

They are thicker and much more masculine than EXT sons typically are. They have good muscle with a wide hip and excellent rump shape.

Angus Alliance Winchester 975

The Winchester bulls were our high selling sire group in our 2017 sale. They were the second highest marbling and the highest ribeye sire group. We were so impressed, we purchased Angus Alliance International’s semen interest. He is a true heifer bull that will give you plenty of performance when used on mature cows. This spring we will be finally getting a true test on what the daughters are like. They are absolutely gorgeous. This is not very surprising considering the sisters to Winchester that I saw in Missouri last year were three of the nicest cows I have ever laid eyes on.

He is heavier muscled and more moderate in his frame. His offspring still are soggy, deep, fast growing and have the same terrific dispositions. Best Rainmaker 7008 was our high selling bull in 2019; he sold to Perry and Sandy Ecker. We used him clean up in 2018, and we AI’d to him the past two years. He is one on my favorite bulls that we have raised. He was one of the heaviest calves at weaning and blew away his competition on our high forage feed test. He has an extremely laid back, easy going demeanor. He stays in excellent shape and is a very efficient breeder. He is moderate framed and very stout. Y is a good horse to have around. After Tracy started him, Pete and I both rode him as a 3 year old, Kyle and Justin rode him as a 4 year old, and Pete’s cousin, Adam rode him last summer. Kyle hauled him to town last summer for the 4-H horse show and Justin turned a few steers on him last fall.

Anybody can get along with him. He’s low geared by nature, not a huge fan of hard work, but takes everything he’s been asked to do in stride... be it a long, slow stride.

“Rita” is our go to ranch horse. She is a 5 year old registered Dunn mare that we purchased from Best Angus. Her extensive use on the ranch includes moving cows, sorting pairs, opening gates, doctoring in the pasture, dragging calves to the fire. Most anyone can ride her. Rita has had many rides in the heart of the Badlands.

She is sure footed and will go any direction you point her. Tel has her going in the arena too. Head or heel steers all day long on her. He has been hauling her to local jackpots and winning on her.

Leave her sit, pull her out of the pasture and jump on her and go.

She is willing to go in any direction you want her to.

The Y problems: he jumps cattle guards, has a naturally high head set, and is so long spined and strided that he isn’t super handy in small spaces. If you want to try him before the sale, just give us a ring. He will be close and handy.

We have been patiently looking for a stud for several years. First, we wanted something that was from a strong, proven, Pitzer mare family.

Over the years, some of the nicest, quick-footed, hard-stopping horses were Mr. Joes Song’s. Bringing him into our pedigrees would be a bonus. Because of the palomino and dun factors that we have picked up from Shining Spark and Genuine Hombre over the years, we needed a base color. Joey put all these things into a pretty little package with the bow on top being his quiet, kind, gentle personality.

Joey will spend the rest of this winter in Nebraska with Clayton Sclenger working on a Performance ROM in healing.
