Diamond D Angus Sale Catalg 2024

Page 1

DECEMBER 8, 9, & 10, 2024

Welcome

Many difficult times have occurred for cattle producers in recent history. Sky rocketing input costs are affecting everyone in this industry. Diamond D Angus has been breeding lower input genetics for as long as we have been in existence. Cows that will take care of themselves, rather than cows that fail when removing inputs out of desperation of saving money. We are hopefully on the back side of three years of extreme drought that has affected every herd in our area. We are very thankful for the cattle genetics that we have developed over the last 57 years. We have had zero tolerance for cattle that have problems of any kind. We strive for trouble free genetics that last for many years. Due to the fact that our cattle have already been put through a rigorous test, they are able to survive much better than most.

This will be our fifth year of doing a 100 percent online sale. We feel that this type of sale will give every one of our customers equal opportunities of purchasing any of our offering. Bidding will start December 8th and close on the 10th. Please check out our offering on either www.billpelton. com or www.diamonddangus.com Our forage developed, long yearling bulls represent fertility and durability. Most were conceived in the first heat cycle and all were developed on a 100 percent forage diet, salt and mineral. We don’t hide shortcomings behind concentrate feed, foot trimming or hair spray. We demand fertility, good feet, soft temperament, good scrotal and eye appeal. Since the majority of our customers are commercial producers, these bulls are bred and developed for real world condition. Their daughters will become some of your favorite cows.

My father taught me many years ago that any time a person puts too much emphasis on a trait then something else important is lost. So, life is too short to make too many mistakes in the cattle business. I will never forget this great advice. So what you will find at Diamond D Angus is not extreme in anything, except, EXTREMELY FUNCTIONAL.

Hope to hear from you,

Donald DeBoo

January 7, 1934 - September 15, 2024

The foundation of Diamond D Angus began with a registered Angus female bought by Donald in 1962. Donald curated a heard of angus cattle that focused on longevity and functionality, and still to this day is the focus of Diamond D Angus.

The Diamond D Advantage

•More Fertile and will cover more cows

•Will continue to gain weight throught first breeding season

•No bulls’ feet or legs ruined due to hot feed

•More years of service from forage bulls

•Less injuries and breeding problems

•Bulls are more conditioned to the environment

•Bulls have been put through a rigid test

If you want to produce cows that will last a long time, it is important to use bulls from a herd that has cows that have proven record of calving every year on time for 10 or more calves. We cull our herd for udder quality and temperament and refuse to trim feet. If an animal needs feet trimmed, we eliminate it.

Most pure-bred producers will make exuces for the problems you see on their cattle. The reality is almost everything you see is a result of genetics. When you listen to a producer talk mostly about performance and EPD numbers, chances are they have left most functional traits behind and the genetics will not last for very many years.

2024 WARRANTY OF FEET ON ALL BULLS SELLING

We feel very confident about the quality of feet we offer. The only way to clean up feet issues is to sell all cattle that have any issues. We have done this for years. Main stream Angus has been a train wreck when it comes to functional traits like feet. The chasers of EPD numbers have made great numbers and destroyed things like feet. We guarantee that the bull you buy will not develop any genetic problems with their feet until the bull is 5 years old. If the problem with feet is from injury or sickness of any kind this warranty will not cover the bull. Please call if you have any problems.

Performance Information

Line Breeding

In the notes of all the bulls selling, we talked about pedigrees in hopes of helping our customers understand our breeding program. We strongly believe that our customers greatly benefit from buying linebred bulls. The benefits include:

1. If you like what you see in a bull or cow family, by line breeding it intensifites these traits. A line-bred bull will breed more true to himself than a non-line bred bull.

2. Line breeding intensifies all traits, good and bad. If genetically there were a problem, it would show up in our herd. We would identify the problem and eliminate the use of these traits.

3. The cows and bulls that we have talked about in the notes have already gone through many generations of line breeding and put thorugh a very rigid test. To pass the test they need to be of moderate frame, easy fleshing, adequate performance, structurally correct, and good udder quality. The bulls must be very masculine.

Performance Key

BW - Birth Weight

WW - Weaning Weight

Cow/Calf Ratio - Adjusted Wean Efficiency

Percentage of cow’s weight that the calf weaned.

Weight,Scrotal, & Hip Ht data was all pulled 10/31/2023.

Calving Ease Prediction

1 Cow only

2 Fair calving ease

3 Good calving ease

4 Outstanding calving ease

This is only a prediction by Diamond D Angus. This is not a guarantee. The sire provieds only 1/2 of the genetics indetermining birth weight.

Cow/Calf Ratio

We calculate adjusted wean efficiency for each cow/calf pair. Adjusted wean efficiency is computed as the ratio of the calf’s adjusted 205 day weight to the cows adjusted weight. The adjusted cow weight is estimated by a process of rating each cow’s body condition and giving her a score. A score of “5” is the median (no adjustment taken), 80 pounds is subtracted from her wight for a score of “6” and 80 pounds is added to her weight for a score of “4”. By adjusting cow weights to equal body condition scores, it rewards cows that produce a bigger calf while maintaining her own body condition. Adjusted cow/calf ratio is shown for each sale bull in the catalog.

Temperament & Udder Score

Diamond D Angus feels it’s very important to record temperament and udder scores. There are no EPDs on some of these very important traits. Considering the safety of the crew and the ease of handling the cattle, we feel it’s well worth our time to score and cull the animals that don’t meet the standards we have set. The performance, efficiency, and meat quality will improve the docile cattle. There is no such thing as a perfect cow, and you have to decide which traits you want or need. Many years ago we started a program of keeping records on the temperament and udder qualities of our females. We score them from 1-5 in each category. Each of our bulls was given a score for his dam’s udder at time of birth. this and a score for his temperament are listed with each bull’s data.

Temperament Score

1 - Calm

2 - Slightly restless, shifting

3 - Squirming & occasionally shaking the squeeze chute

4 - continuous vigorous movement

5 - beserk, rearing & twisting

Udder Score

1 - Very good

2 - Above average

3 - Average

4 - Capable of raising a calf

5 - A non-functional animal

I am not able to say enough good about this Great Plains son. He is as close to perfect phenotype as a bull can be. Phenomenally good feet and an unbelievable athlete. The mother being a full sister to DDA Lodge E5H. She is also a beautiful cow that weaned 10 calves here at Diamond D Angus. I have talked about the good in DDA Melisa 824, so let’s talk about her mother, DDA Melisa 545 is a cow that Howrey Angus purchased many years ago and was a cornerstone for his herd. Monte flushed here many times and kept many daughters. He also sold many sons form her, Including a son we bought MH Mick 53. Please do not pass these DDA Great Plains 77U sons up. The 77U also was very active this year in a multi sire breeding group.

In 2014 I traveled to New Zealand so that I could view two herds. The Pinebank and Resurgam Angus herds. Both herds have been 100 percent forage developed for a very long time. I took many photos of cattle and environment. Bill Hodge of Sustainable Genetics, had also been to the Pinebank herd many years before me. Bill had imported embryos from the Pinebank herd and put those embryos in. After two sons had gotten about 18 months old he called me and ask if I would be interested in these sons. I was hesitate because I said I was not familiar with the cow that was flushed. Bill needed to remind me that yes, I was familiar with the mother to his bulls, because I had sent a photo of her to him after my trip. When I saw this photo, I knew I would need these two bulls out of a cow that had reached the grannie herd of the Pinebank Angus. It was a photo that I had taken of my favorite cow at the Pinebank herd. Both Pinebank SE 9D and 10D were both out of this great cow. She was 17 years old at the time I took photo. Bill had taken a photo of this same cow when she was about 7 years old. We are now using a Pinebank SE 10D son. His name is DDA Carrolton 45W. He is the 16th calf DDA Ginny 458 raised. Grandmother DDA Ginny 604 was also a good cow that weaned11calves,she traces to the same cow family as 177U and142V. We never make excuses for them that they did not do there job. So buy with confidence that the DDA Carrolton 45W sons will sire some of your favorite daughters that will stay in production for a very long time.

I had an opportunity of stopping last spring and seeing her and some of her offspring in May of 2024. I know all cattle have a weakness; many have many weaknesses however a person would have a hard time knowing what that weakness is with this great cow. The Oak Lane Prism 410 has Phenomenally good Phenotype with great feet and legs.

Longevity in our herd indicates many things about an animal. First of all any time an animal gives problems, she is gone. If she loses a calf she is gone. If she has a runt calf she is gone. If she has feet or structure problems she is gone. If she has udder or temperament problems, she is gone. If she does not breed back quickly she is gone. So with that said any time a cow is old, and still here, she has passed a rigid test. We have identified the mother, the grand mother and great grandmother as a cow family that has passed the rigid test. We saved sons of the great Hana 940, DDA Bar Lad 177U and DDA Alliance 142V. The 177U was born when the 940 cow was 18 years old and the 142V she was 19 years old. Cattle selected for the most in anything typically are the most in that trait because they were selected for the most. However any time an animal is the most in one thing they have lost a very important trait or traits in order to be the most in something else.

The Ole Farms are a great customer of ours and they have much influence from our herd. The mother to 1A is also Pinebank bred. We bought Pinebank SE 10D from Bill Hodge a number of years ago. I see many good things when studying this pedigree. The DDA Ram 15X is a very correct with great feet, that has DDA Melisa 667 on the mother’s side. The Resurgam Blu-print T368 daughters have made great cows. Great depth of body and great feet. He comes from the Resurgam Angus herd in New Zealand. On mothers side is a DDA Lodge E5H daughter. From HAR Pinebank 202 daughter as grandmother.

Another good 60Y son. The DDA Trouble Free 60Y was one of those last minute decisions to use, when we discovered we would take about half of the heifers to Livingston Montana for grazing that summer. I was on the phone with a good customer and he said he had lots of grass and we had nearly none, due to drought. So we decided to take a cattle pot load one afternoon and the next morning we were on the road with them. The 60Y was on that group. Sometimes the best things that happen are shooting from the hip out of desperation.

I see sires of both dam and sire are the DDA Bar Lad 177U who has a mother of DDA Hana 940. The 940 cow stayed in production until she was 19 years old. We are using two of her sons now. DDA Pinebank 142V and DDA Bar Lad 177U. The 940 cow was a direct daughter of our 368 cow, who stayed in production until she was 22 years old. One more generation back was before I came home to the ranch; however the mother Miss Diamond Chance 065 all stayed in production for a very long time. Function and Longevity are very heritable and if you do not select for it, the cattle will not stay in production for long periods of time. For the last 40 years many have selected for EPD numbers and took their eye off the functional ball.

In studying this pedigree only one thing comes to mind WOW. The goodness in this pedigree, leaves me on where do I start. The Ole Farms from Alberta bought many cows and bulls from us. I also have bought from them. The Pinebank 775H is one example of buying a bull from them that has done a phenomenally good job. He traces to the great DDA Pinebank 50H who left many good daughters in their herd. He is from a DDA Maddie 426. One of those great cows that they bought from us many years ago. The Maternal grandsire is DDA Great Plains 77U, that means that DDA Melisa E808 is the Maternal great grandmother. I also see Pinebank SE 9D as sire to grandmother.

I had the opportunity to stop at the Oak Lane ranch last spring. The mother to Prism is as close to perfect as a person can breed them. Scott also pointed out daughters that the 222 cow had in production. They were as perfect as she was. Breeding a maternal herd does not happen over a year or two. My father use to say, that a lifetime is not long enough. Looking at dam side of this great pedigree, he has a Pinebank 64/10 maternal grand sire. After studding this pedigree I would predict a little extra growth that will make great females.

If a person puts enough good in a pedigree, then the outcome is almost certain to get a good animal in return. I came back to the ranch in 1988 and this is what my father taught me then and it will never change, no matter how accurate EPD number are. We have learned over the years that a good cow herd is never built with the use of any number. It is those cows that you never need any extra attention that rise to the top, over time. Stack those great cows and bulls. This has always been our philosophy. When I had the opportunity of seeing the 222 cow it only confirmed what I had been focused on.

We saved a son to use sired by DDA Magnum 40M out of our DDA May 059. He was injured at a young age and never used much. He had tremendous good old parents. A multi sire breeding group is a rough job and we do loose some from breeding like this every year. However I feel that this is the way most cow calf operations need to breed and we are hopefully improving our soil health by doing this. We also only get daughters from the bulls that survive and are the most aggressive and most fertile. The DDA Boss Hog 57A has a great looking cow family.

That is a good early indication that they have the ability to stay around and do their job with very few inputs. His mother DDA Galatea 859 was sold to Loyning Angus and Wyatt DeVries. Loyning Angus top selling bull in April 2024 is a son of the DDA Galatea 859. The mother to this great sire is a 0668 daughter, she has had 11 calves here at DDA. The great grandmother has had 7 calves and great great grandmother 11 calves. Unbelievable longevity!!! I am not aware of any pedigree that has had not had any embryo or semen that the cow in a 3 generation pedigree was born in 1983. There is incredible longevity on dam side of this pedigree also. I see maternal grandsire is our DDA Lodge E5H and his mother DDA Melisa 824. I see mother DDA Zelda 347 had 9 calves, I see the great grandmother DDA Zelda 409 has had 14 calves. Back even farther is our 580/368 cow families. This is a pedigree that I could go on and on. Loading that pedigree with good cattle leaves no other option for the offspring other than functional good cattle.

Unbelievable function and trouble free genetics. How many bulls have a mother that are 19 years old? Her name is DDA Hana 940. Grandmother Diamond Henretta 368 stay in production until 22 years old and great grandmother Miss Diamond Chance 065 that had 15 calves at Diamond D Angus. All of these calves were natural calves. When I talk about the time required to build a functional, long lasting animal there is nothing that will compare to a pedigree that has actually proven they are capable of just that. In today’s world of breeding for the perfect EPD numbers, this type of breeding has actually been lost in the big chase. You will find pedigrees bred for this type of function and longevity, in every animal selling at our sale. The DDA Hana 940 is mother to 142V and 177U. You will also find this great cow family in many pedigrees we will be selling. Does everyone need this type of longevity? Absolutely not, however using this type of longevity can and will move the needle of function and longevity

What an outstanding Pedigree the DDA Hodge 93A has. Pinebank SE 10D has a mother that stayed in production for many years in New Zealand. The mother to 93A had her 6th calf in May, the grandmother DDA Zelda E702 had 13 calves, great grandmother had 17 calves and great, great grand mother is our 368 cow who stayed in production until she was 22 years old. If you like function and longevity, take a look here.

The Oak Lane Prism 410 sired many calves in a multi sire breeding group. This tells me many things about him. I know the bull is sound, fertile, and can cover many cows. After all this is what a breeder will buy a bull for. Due to the fact that we have all cattle DNA tested for parentage we know what bull is siring calves and what one is not. Bulls that sire the most calves are also siring your next daughters in production. By doing this we are make the best cows posable also. I also see HAR Pinebank 443 202 as sire to mother. I don’t remember exact figures but he was put with 2 year old heifers and he sired 80 out of 83 posable.

Function and Longevity are heritable. The mother to DDA Carrolton 45W has weaned 16 calves. He is sire to high selling bull at our sale last December and sold to the Peebles Ranch in Texas. I see Pinebank on both sides of this pedigree. Pinebank SE 10D is from a cow that lived to at least 17 years old, is when I saw her. Bill Hodge saw her at about 8 years old.

The Peebles Ranch in Texas bought a son last December that was our high selling bull. The DDA George 97A has a great young cow that had her 6th calf in May. The grandmother DDA Gretta 930 has had 12 calves.

I see New Zealand genetics on both sides of this good pedigree. I had an opportunity of traveling to New Zealand many years ago. I took a photo of an old cow that was my favorite cow at the Pinebank and emailed it to Bill Hodge when I got home. Some time before I traveled to New Zealand Bill was there and took a photo of the same cow that I did. Not realizing he had. Bill liked the Mother to 9D and 10D well enough he had embryos shipped. The 9D and 10D were a result of them embryos. When the 9D and 10D was about 17 months old Bill called me and said he had two embryo sons from this old cow for sale and wanted to know if I would like to buy them. At that moment I did not realize they were both out of my favorite cow. So we made a deal and the 58W is a result of the 10D bull.

The DDA Cooper 135U is also from what I would consider a dominate sire in our multi sire breeding group. I would like to thank South Fork Angus of Chinook Mt. for the opportunity of using this great bull. His mother DDA Galatea 859 was sold as a donor to Loyning Angus and Wyatt DeVries. Ben Loyning sold a number of sons from this great cow; one was his top selling bull. The mother of this good bull DDA Ginny 469 had her 8 th calf in May, her mother DDA Ginny 1106 had her 12th calf in May and one more generation back, the DDA Ginny 781 has weaned 10 calves.

Another DDA Carrolton 45W son. One thing we look at are the number of calves sired by a particular sire. The 45W has many to choose from. Having many calves in a multi sire breeding group indicates that everything is ticking the way it is supposed to. No questions there are dominate sires. We feel those dominate sires will sire dominate sons and good trouble free females.

The mother is the only cow in 5 generations that has had less than 13 calves. This would be talking about both sides of pedigree. The only reason she has had less calves than that is because she is only 8 years old. For a cow calf operation it would make sense to eliminate cows before this age. However if a cow will last this long for use, just imagine what age of cow the DDA George 106A will produce.

The DDA Athabasca 91N worked in a cow calf operation in the mountains of Wyoming before we had the opportunity of buying him back. What would be better for us than having a cow calf operation test a bull, and when he turns out buying him back? You see for the people that breed for EPD numbers, this is not a choice because to stay on the cutting edge a person needs new cattle frequently. The DDA Athabasca 91N run in elevations over 10,000 feet with no problems.
