Dear Friends,
We would like to invite you to our 30th Annual sale (online) April 18-20th,2024. Thank you to our many friends, loyal customers & interest in our program. You are welcome to come view the offer at your convenience, or open house the day of closing online sale. We’d also be happy to show you our cows, herd bulls and how we manage our cattle.
We’ve tried popular/trending genetics, but they did not work very well for us! Sure, we could have changed our management practices to make them work. I’m old school and believe that cows must work for us. I believe a cow must live and work in the environment and resources that ranch has in a low input operation. Feed, fuel, labor, & equipment all cost more than in the past. We do not run a feed wagon, bale processor, or use corn silage. We feed hay when supplementing our cattle in winter. Mostly grass type hay. Summer is just mineral & salt. You must match your cow to your resources. Some seed-stock operations are showing that you can wean calves up to 1,000 pounds! Yes, it might be possible with high growth genetics, and by altering your environment with supplement feeding. Sadly, most commercial cattle are unprofitable feeding supplements 365 days a year! You must match your cow to your environment and lowest cost resources! The easiest way I can explain this is like driving a car with bad gasoline in the tank. When mother nature is treating you good, and you’re driving that car with bad gasoline downhill you might get by. But when mother nature throws you a drought and your high growth genetics energy requirements are not met, there will be more open cows and lighter weaning weights. And driving that car with bad gasoline uphill it will not make to the top! Very simple, do not be pulled down that rabbit hole, with all those marketing & potsy schemes telling you that all that growth is a good thing. High growth genetics maintains requirements are higher 365 days a year than moderate growth cattle are. We used to call them range cows, now maybe feedlot cows are more fitting!
We look forward to seeing or hearing from you. If you are uncomfortable with the online sale format, be sure to contact us or Bill Pelton’s staff, we will be more than happy to assist you. Let’s make Americans cow herds great again!
God Bless!

P17D is an imported embryo from New Zealand born in the USA. Pinebank Waigroup was formed in 1967, a group of 4 breeders closed their herds with a breeding objective to select Angus cattle for fertility, calving ease, low BW, WW, YW, scanned ribeyes & IMF. In a total grass environment where the cattle follow the sheep!
WHO AND WHAT IS AgBOOST:
AgBoost is an independent genetic data company that processes your DNA through Igenity, which is a non-breed specific thrid-party DNA lab. The data comes back to AgBoost in a 16 trait genetic profile. These 16 traits are the core of what most cattlemen need to help make a more targeted slection for their sire needs. From these 16 traits, there ar four target areas that you can see more specifically how the individual performed compared to others. Those areas are Production, Maternal, Performace, and Carcass Traits.
CHOICE:
As the industry leans more towards being data-driven, we were looking for a company that would give us a non-biases DNA evaluation. I was looking around for another breeder that was doing what we were trying to accomplish. That is when I found Craig Guffey of Swearingin Angus by Lawrance, KS. Why did we choose AG Boost over Angus Genomics? Quite simply we were looking for a non-biased 3rd party evaluation of what our cattle are. Another feature is the simplicity at which data is presented. It is easy for anyone to understand and use for their selection needs.
BULL SALE INFO:
AgBoost identifies 16 traits and applies a score from 1-10, with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest score, against all breeds today. A higher score is generally better, unless you want less BW, FAT and RFI, then you wuld want a lower score. The DNA test is done at IGENTITY (Neogen Geenseek Operations) Lab, and AgBoost is the 3rd party source. We are excited and will continue to use AgBoost. I will still provide actual data that we have taken from these bulls. This is calculated off the true genetic value based on all breeds, not a subset of Angus. The most important thing to understand is we have kept all traits balanced to allow performace, efficiency, and long-term maternal value.

The Angus Cow
The Angus cow. The Angus breed’s position as the number one beef breed in the world was built on the back of the Angus cow. She was reliable, productive, predictable, and built for the environment she inhabited. That Angus cow was fertile, functional, and possessed a maternal instinct and intelligence that bordered on mythical. In the hills of California, the northern plains of Montana and the Dakotas, the arid Southwest, the corn belt of the Midwest and the hot, humid Southeast, that Angus cow went about her business of keeping countless ranches in the black.
The Angus cow began to change with the consolidation of the packing industry and the growth of the grid-based marketing taking place over the last twenty-five years. During the same time span, industry experts began proclaiming that we must add more marbling, more growth, and basically more everything. Genetic trend in the beef cattle business became driven by theory developed in the board rooms of the packing houses and in the class rooms of the universities. Breeding programs began taking clues from sales reports, semen companies, and marketers intent on creating constant churn.
At first changes were subtle. Today, it’s painfully obvious that the pursuit of more carcass merit and growth came a the expense of the attributes that made the Angus cow the most efficient factory in the business. Untimely, those paying the steepest price for the conversion are the ranchers whose livelihoods depend solely on efficiently raising cattle in our nation’s harshest environments. These ranchers have seen their margins lessen and inputs increase with every calf crop. That Angus cow which was their most valuable asset twenty-five years ago has become one of their costliest liabilities today. That Angus cow has gotten too big for her environment, failing to breed on time. Her calf has more genetic potential for weaning growth that can be realized in most real-world ranch’s environment. That Angus cow is often poor footed, poor uddered and requires supervision at calving time. The maternal instinct and intelligence which was a trademark of that Angus cow has been replaced by an instinct to run for the feed truck when the going gets tough.
