welcome Welcome to Pembrokeshire Fish Week. This seriously fishy festival celebrates not just the abundance of mouthwatering sea-food of West Wales, but also Pembrokeshire’s breathtaking coastline, culture, great angling and fishing heritage. A previous Gold award winner for True Taste Food Tourism Destination and crowned Pembrokeshire Tourism Premier Event in 2009/2010. This year the festival is celebrating by hosting more than 200 family-friendly events around the coast and inland waterways. Food lovers can enjoy shellfish extravaganzas, seafood Tapas, crab lunches, or just great fish and chips! With plenty of opportunities to sample and buy locally caught fish and shellfish or forage the seashores for a wild feast. Top chefs Valentine Warner, Mitch Tonks, Bryn Williams, Mark Hix and Anthony Evans will be showing their fishing and cooking skills at our midweek masterclass. Plus cookery and preparation demonstrations with Duncan Lucas and Brian Terry. Enjoy the beautiful coastline with a variety of river cruises, seashore rambles, kayaking and coasteering adventures or fishing trips. Keen anglers can take part in several fishing competitions while there are plenty of opportunities for beginners to ‘just have a go’. The programme casts off on June 25th with a food lovers and family day at Milford Haven Marina, where you can enjoy a carnival atmosphere alongside fish and shellfish demonstrations, opportunities to taste many varieties of fish on the go, plus plenty for non fish lovers too, entertainment for all ages and many varied stalls. Pembrokeshire Fish Week is truly a county-wide event and you don’t have to love fish to enjoy the fun!

We will be looking at fish, creatures and plants from under the sea around the coast and seeing what we can catch in our net. Children will work freely with a wonderful range of the sparkliest and shimmeriest fabrics to make a lively range of deep sea creatures, some that no one has ever seen before! Our fishy catch will make a fantastic backdrop which you will see at events during Pembrokeshire Fish Week. TIDAL Pembrokeshire Fish Week Sculpture Competition 2011 All entries to be received by Wednesday 8th June. Young people are being invited to create their own sculpture and win a great prize! Create a 3D artwork on the theme of ‘Tidal’ in Pembrokeshire Fish Week 2011’s Sculpture Competition and be in with a chance to win: • 11 years and under (individual entry): Prize - £25 voucher by Emrys Arts, Haverfordwest • 11 years and under (group entry): Prize - a workshop with Creative Café, Haverfordwest • 12-16 years (individual entry): Prize - £50 voucher to spend at Emrys Arts, Haverfordwest Artworks can be figurative or abstract but must be movable, and no more than 1m x 1m in size. The judges are Pip Lewis of Space to Create and Deb Docherty, Art Lecturer from Pembrokeshire College. Entries will be assessed on the criteria of material and artistic merit. TIDAL Pembrokeshire Fish Week Photography Competition 2011 All entries to be received by Wednesday 8th June. Be inspired by our beautiful coastline in Pembrokeshire Fish Week 2011’s photography competition! Amateur photographers are invited to submit photographs on the theme of ‘Tidal’, in either colour or black and white. Each category has a fantastic prize: • 18 years and over: A case of wine (12 bottles) and a £50 voucher for Amazon sponsored by Isla Negra. • 11 to 18 years: A canvas of the winning photograph sponsored by Pembrokeshire Photography and a £50 voucher for Amazon sponsored by Isla Negra. The competition will be judged by David Wilson of David Wilson Photography, Ian Richards ABIPP of Pembrokeshire Photography and Barbara Simon, Head of Photography at Pembrokeshire College. what’s on fish week exhibitions Fair Fishing & Less-fashionable Fish C3 An exhibition at Scolton Manor that looks at sustainable fishing for the future; the fish that have fell out fashion with the British public and recipes for their revival on the dinner plate. Linked to Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall’s Fish Fight, a national campaign to promote sustainable fishing, the exhibition will seek to expand on the selection of fish that we eat and promote the use of some of the lesser-known species of local fish currently being discarded as trash. During Fish Week the Tearoom at Scolton Manor will feature dishes using these lesser-known species of local fish. The story of fishing at Neyland C5 at Neyland library. The exhibition organised by Neyland Cultural Purposes Committee will be launched on Monday 27th June and will run for a month. Archives, photographs and artefacts on the eighteenth century herring industry and salt refinery, nineteenth century Irish mackerel trade, the Neyland steam trawling and fishery company 1907-1919, twentieth century fishing and Neyland angling club. This fantastic day will take place at Freshwater West, one of the homes of the famous Welsh delicacy; laver bread. We will start the day with an inspirational seashore picnic where you will be able to taste Welsh classics such as laver bread with cockles and bacon, as well as other wonderful dishes from the Café Mor menu, with fresh local shellfish and a rich variety of edible seaweeds and sea plants such as dulse, sea lettuce, carragheen, sea beet and rock samphire. Once we have finished the picnic we will follow the tide out and explore the shoreline and rock pools, learning about the rich variety of edible sea plants, seaweeds and shellfish that exist along the shore and the best way to cook with them. After the day with Café Mor, you will be confident in collecting several species of seaweeds, shellfish and seashore plants and you too can start enjoying the riches of the sea! Now, though this event is being held in the middle of summer there is no guarantee that the sun will be shining so please come prepared for whatever the Welsh weather delivers.
