Insport Festival a huge success in Haverfordwest THE first Disability Insport Festival took place at Haverfordwest Leisure Centre on Sunday, June 21. Peter O’Shea of Snowdrop Independent Living had previously attended a Disability Sport Spectacular in Cardiff run by Disability Sport Wales (DSW) and wanted to have something similar in Pembrokeshire. In partnership with Nathan Stevens (Disability Sport Wales), Pembrokeshire Leisure and Sport Pembrokeshire, the event was planned. Pembrokeshire sports clubs were able to showcase their sport and encourage children and adults to have a go. These included the Modern Print Inclusive Target Shooting club, Bike Mobility, Crymych Panthers Boccia, Pembrokeshire Harriers Athletics, Pembrokeshire Hurricanes Wheelchair Basketball, Haverfordwest Gymnastics, Pembrokeshire Puffins Swimming, Strength Academy Wales Power lifting and Pembrokeshire Leisure’s fitness suite. The Tenderfoots and Pembrokeshire Disabled Bowls Clubs also promoted their activities. The Ospreys Wheelchair Rugby side travelled down from Swansea with many people trying the sport. Rugby stars Ken Owens, Dafydd Jones and Dan Lydiate attended the day and had a go at most of the activities. Roy Carter, a current Great Britain 25 meter pistol shooter had only heard of the event a few days prior travelled down from London to promote his sport. Roy also got involved with the wheelchair basketball as that was his event before transferring to pistol shooting.

Jack Thomas, swimming bronze medallist from the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, also attended. Paralympian Nathan Stevens DSW’s new talent officer was at hand to meet individuals and advice on what sports would be most suited to them. Jon Morgan Executive Director from Disability Sport Wales attended and said: “This was a very good event, well attended and supported by local and regional clubs. “The event had a good feel

about it and I hope it can become a regional thing.” Jon was delighted to welcome Stephen Crabb, Wales First Minister (Pembrokeshire MP), to the event, who said: “I have had a brilliant morning at the Disability Insport festival and enjoyed having a go at wheelchair basketball and target shooting, I hope it will becomes an annual event.” Angela Miles, the Disability Sport Officer for Pembrokeshire, was delighted by the amount of people that attended, and hopes that many

A PEMBROKESHIRE pupil’s zest for sport has won him a brand new scooter. Finlay Elrick, of Tasker Milward School, was presented with a Mongoose Stunt Scooter as a reward for sporting enthusiasm. The year seven student has attended over 100 extra curricula sports clubs during this school year. He has taken part in cricket, dodgeball, football, golf, basketball and boys hockey and represented the school in badminton. Finlay was presented with his scooter – donated by Halfords - at a ceremony at the school on Friday, July 10. Runner-up and year eight pupil Josie Phillips attended 87 sessions including girls

football and cricket. She plays for Johnston Girls football team and plays school cricket, and will be a Silver Young Sports Ambassador the upcoming academic year. She was presented with a ‘goody bag’ from Boots. “With so much concern these days about fitness and obesity we want to encourage pupils to get active,” said Rominy Colville, Active Young People Officer for Sport Pembrokeshire. “By rewarding effort we give them that bit extra incentive to keep fit.” Under the school’s incentive scheme, pupils earn points each time they attend a lunch time or afterschool sports club.

of these will now join some of the clubs that were in attendance. She is extremely grateful to Peter from Snowdrop Independent Living for sponsoring such an event.
