A Celebration of Sport An amazing year of sport in Pembrokeshire was celebrated at the Sport Pembrokeshire Awards evening on Friday 30th November 2012. Outstanding sporting achievements from right across the County were recognised at the prestigious event at Folly Farm.
And the exceptional achievements of Jacob Thomas - a member of the GB elite Boccia squad - were marked with the accolade of the Chairman’s Special Award.
The evening was hosted by Sport Pembrokeshire - Pembrokeshire County Council’s sports development team. It was sponsored by Valero, Western Telegraph, Folly Farm and Radio Pembrokeshire. London’s Olympic and Paralympic Games 2012 were also celebrated with the attendance of a number of the Olympic Torch-bearers from Pembrokeshire.
Seventeen-year-old Jacob from Bethesda, near Narberth, achieved a place in the last 16 of the Paralympics Boccia competition. The 2010 and 2011 British BC3 champion was beaten by gold medalist Grigorios Polychronidis – one of the best boccia players in the world. “Jacob is an inspiration to us all,” said Councillor Elwyn Morse. “His hard work and determination
over the years bore fruit this summer when at just 17 he became the youngest player in the GB Boccia team at the Paralympics.” “Jacob has now started his preparation for selection into the GB squad for Rio 2016 and his experiences of London 2012 will be paramount to this. We wish him all the best.” Another highlight of the Sports Awards evening was the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award to Paul Murphy from the Leader of Pembrokeshire County Council, Councillor Jamie Adams. Chloe Brown from Ysgol Dewi Sant, Natasha Jiwa-Walji from Ysgol Preseli, Scarlett Rushby-Smith and Chris Hinman both from Greenhill School have been selected as Gold Young Ambassadors, for their commitment as Silver Ambassadors last year and their outstanding ability as young leaders. Their role involves increasing participation in school sport and PE and promoting healthy and active lifestyles by working with the 5x60 staff at
their school and other Sport Pembrokeshire officers. Already, they have attended the National Young Ambassadors Conference at the Sport Wales National Centre, with other Gold Ambassadors from Wales. Portfield School – After many practice walks and months of preparation and planning, two groups from Portfield School set off in July to undertake their expeditions as part of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. Both groups walked from school, along country roads, tracks, bridleways and footpaths, dealing well with the wet and boggy conditions along the way, to Nolton Haven for their overnight camp.
Jack summed it up, “This one was tough! It was hard work but we did it! It was so much fun and I will never forget it!”
The Bronze Award group returned to school the following afternoon, having completed their expedition, leaving the Silver Award group to continue on in the rain! They all thoroughly enjoyed their first camping experience and were keen to share their stories. Emma commented, “It was great – we walked through a bog which was smelly, but we helped each other through it!” Zoe added “Fantastic! Can we do it again?” Luckily it brightened up into a beautiful evening for camping for the Silver Award group, but on the final day the torrential rain returned! The group worked well as a team and never lost their sense of humour – especially enjoying it when the assessor lost her boots in the mud! They finished their expedition wet, muddy and exhausted, but extremely proud of their achievement.

A dream came true Jacob Thomas’ dream to be a Paralympian came true in September when he represented Team GB at the Olympic Park in London. In the individual Boccia event, played at the Excel arena, Jacob played Veronica Pamies Morera of Spain. Jacob progressed to the next round by winning 8 points to 1. Jacob then met his hero, the 31 year old Grigorioe Polychronidis of Greece, who had already won gold in the BC3 pair’s event. Unfortunately Jacob lost 5-1, but at only 17 years of age Jacob has achieved so much in such a short He is an inspiration to us all. space of time.
22 year old James Tyler from Milford Haven recently competed at the Special Olympic European Games in Russia. After some very impressive performances he returned with 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal. James won the 200m and anchored the relay team to win gold. He also gained silver in the 100 metres. He is the first athlete in the county to represent Great Britain. James trains with Pembrokeshire Harriers Athletics Club.
‘High Quality Sports Experience through the Multi Skills Approach’ Up to 28 students at Portfield School have been enjoying a new 5x60 club since the start of September, delivered by Bob Nelson. Multi Skills Club focuses on developing a wide range of fundamental movement skills as building blocks for future sports experiences. The ABC’s (agility, balance and co-ordination) together with strength, stamina and flexibility are targeted to help develop each student’s physical competence (known as ‘physical literacy’). Pupils work in small groups and take part in activities that develop hand eye co-ordination, spatial awareness and peripheral vision together
with introducing concepts such as possession, attack and defence. Students are invited to choose from a selection of equipment and are encouraged to think creatively. This encourages a positive ‘cando’ attitude helping them understand what they are trying to achieve and how best to do this. These generic skills can then be applied in future sport specific activities. One such opportunity is the Disability Football competition being held in Tenby. A squad of students has been selected to participate in this event and have been training with Bob on the astro turf at Tasker Millward as part of his 5x60 Football Club. Let’s hope all these students and Bob’s hard work on the football pitch and during Multi Skills Club helps contribute towards their success and enjoyment at this event.

Pembrokeshire Primary Schools Cross Country 2012 Thursday 18th October saw the 22nd running of the event, which was organised by volunteers from Pembrokeshire Harriers, at Oakwood Theme Park. The weather was fine but ground conditions were very wet and muddy for the 905 children that took part. However, the youngsters rose to the occasion and there were some exciting races over the eight scheduled events. Mud and lost shoes couldn’t put these athletes off, they competed like Olympians over the two distanced courses;Years 3 & 4 over 800m and Years 5 & 6 over 1300m. The organisers wish to thank all those concerned along with the Oakwood Management for their help in making the event such a huge success. Oakwood’s permission for using the facilities for the event is paramount, as there is possibly no other venue to cater for what has become the largest sporting fixture for age group children in the county. With the parents, grandparents and teachers making up a very large vociferous spectator group, there had to be thousands of people attending. Overall team winners this year were Tavernspite, with Narberth 2nd and Saundersfoot 3rd. The small school winners were Hook, with Templeton 2nd and Redhill 3rd. Special thanks must also be extended to the young volunteers from Tasker Milward School and
Pembrokeshire Harriers who acted as ‘hares’ and led the competitors around the course, ensuring smooth running of all races. Also to St. John’s Ambulance for provision of first aid and to Sport Pembrokeshire staff for their assistance throughout the event.

Pembrokeshire has launched a new schools project, Pembrokeshire Outdoor Schools. The project encourages children to be more confident with their local environment and has been developed through the partnerships between Education, Sport Pembrokeshire, Darwin Experience and Pembrokeshire Coast National Parks Authority (PCNPA). ’An ‘Outdoor School’ teaches its pupils to become fully engaged with, and confident in, their local outdoor environment.Through regular visits to their local outdoor areas the children develop a strong sense of well-being and high levels of physical activity. They acquire a useful knowledge of ecology and sustainability and develop communication skills by sharing this knowledge with others.’’ Six schools initially took part in the pilot almost 2 years ago and since then the project has been growing from strength to strength. Now 16 new schools have started to get to know their local areas
through identification by the PCNPA and have become familiar with physical activities they can do there and the ecology that they will find. The project was highlighted as sector leading practice by Estyn earlier this year in Tavernspite School for the development of the children’s knowledge, pride, ownership and enjoyment of their local outdoor area. For more information or to be involved, please contact Simon Thomas, Head at Lamphey School and Chair of Pembrokeshire Outdoor Schools.

Tenby show off their Multi-skills! Young children in Pembrokeshire and across Wales will be exploring and learning through sport, following the Dragon Multi–Skills and Sport course for teachers in Tenby recently. The Dragon Multi-Skills resource pilot took place in St David’s Family of Schools last autumn and following its success, the roll out in Wales has started. It means that rather than starting out by focussing on a particular sport, the focus will be on essential skills such as balance, running and spatial awareness - that will then be transferred to football, tennis, netball, or whatever sport the individual wants to take part in.

Ysgol Dewi Sant Coasteering – Ben Sutton – Gold Ambassador After watching everyone having so much fun, I had to get in on the action, so I had a go myself. Scared did not even cover it – I don’t know how some of the younger ones managed it! Our coasteering expedition started by clambering down the cliff by St. Non’s. A sheer drop on one side and a bramble thicket on the other, but we all got down safely.
We then traversed around a near vertical cliff to find a brilliant serge pool that lifted us up and down in the swell.
After a slight hesitation (the sea was extremely cold!) everyone was in and swimming over to the first jump. As nominated photographer, I lay in the sea awaiting the first jumper who flew off the 3 metre jump and splashed in the water right next to me.
We finished by scrambling back up the twisted trail and walking back to St. Davids – I don’t think two hours has ever gone so quickly!
Chloe Brown, Gold Ambassador, Ysgol Dewi Sant Wednesday 24th October saw new Gold Sports Ambassadors for Pembrokeshire arrive in Cardiff. This was the beginning of my role as one of four Pembrokeshire representatives at the Welsh Institute of Sport. Gold delegates from all the regions of Wales were looking forward to a day that would enable them to discuss how they would promote sport within their county and schools. I have spent the past year as a Silver Sports Ambassador within my school, Ysgol Dewi Sant. Now as Gold
Ambassador I had the opportunity to listen to the stories of Alex Danson, a hockey player for Great Britain and meet Paralympic archer Mel Clarke, at the conference in Cardiff. The day has given me an insight into my new role and what is expected of me. I came away enthusiastic to start many projects like a Sports Council, mini tournaments, surveys and a Pembrokeshire Coastal Path challenge. I hope the ideas formulated from the conference will allow me to be a successful Gold Ambassador for Pembrokeshire.

Tasker Milward ‘A Golden Goal for Tasker Milward’ Autumn term both in the PE Department and for 5x60 at Tasker Milward has been busy as usual. With up to 18 clubs running each week, students are finding it difficult to decide which clubs to attend! Our girl’s football team should be congratulated on their recent success at the 5x60 6-a-side Girls Football competition held at Greenhill School, Tenby on Oct 21st. A squad of eleven girls from Years 7, 8 & 9 competed against six other Pembrokeshire secondary schools with an unbeaten record in their pool. Captained by Rebecca Roberts not one goal was
conceded in all their seven matches. A tense final against Ysgol Dewi Sant led to victory after a golden goal in extra time. All the girls who participated should be proud of their achievement and we’re hoping a few may be signed to local teams in the near future! Tasker Milward PE department and the 5x60 Officer have also been working together to strengthen links with our feeder primary schools. At the start of October, 180 Year 6 students from 6 local schools were invited to attend a taster day. Students participated in five different activities ranging from zumba and cheerleading to tennis
netball and outdoor education. Many thanks to our sixth form A Level PE students who escorted the groups, many of whom were spotted enjoying the activities themselves, particularly the Zumba boys! In addition to this a PESS Fun Hockey Festival was hosted by Tasker Milward on October 23rd. Forty Year 5 and 6 students from local primary schools participated in a hockey session which followed the latest ‘4689’initiative by Hockey Wales. A huge thank you to Angela Miles (Hockey Development Officer) who was assisted by the 5x60 Officer, Claire Butler (PE Dept) and hockey specialists Tom D’Arcy, Stephen Kendrick and Molly Brick (Y12 Gold Ambassador). We were all impressed with the skills and enthusiasm displayed by this group of students and we are hoping they will sustain their interest in the sport in the future.

Ysgol y Preseli Climbing Wall Crymych Leisure Centre has a climbing wall in the old squash court which is being used by the 5x60 climbing club. Year 7 and 8 pupils are benefiting from the wall with clubs running on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The pupils are offered a variety of different games to play and have enjoyed the different challenges that have been set.
5x60 YOGA Years 10 and 11 can be very stressful in secondary schools with work load and the added stress of end of year exams. To help the pupils relax during this time, the
5x60 officer has arranged for an instructor to start yoga sessions. Pupils have really enjoyed these sessions with instructor Lisa Taylor. Over 30 pupils have attended the sessions which have been held in Crymych Leisure Centre on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays.
Summer Holidays During the summer holidays 7 pupils from Ysgol Y Preseli went on a kayaking trip from Hereford to Ross on Wye. The pupils were Tomos Dugmore, Rheinallt George, Aaron Williams, James Bentely, Ieuan Cooke, and Antoine Simmons.
Over the three day trip, the pupils were given tasks which included setting up tents to sleep in over night, putting them away before making their own breakfast in the mornings and then setting off on their kayak’s for the day. After completing the three day course the pupils received a qualification. Later that week the pupils had a day in Heatherton Leisure Park. They climbed the Tree Tops High Ropes Adventure Trail, played baseball, crazy golf, archery, clay shooting and they even found time to have a go on the go-carts.
