April 2014

On the 28th May 2014, the Queen’s Baton Relay will be in St. David’s ahead of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, which starts on the 23rd July 2014. The Relay will make its way from the Bishops Palace through the Cathedral grounds where it will be received and blessed by the Bishop of St Davids, The Right Reverend Wyn Evans. After being carried through the Cathedral, the baton will then make its way to the main square in St Davids. Here it will be received by local dignitaries before proceeding to Ysgol Dewi Sant via Oriel y Parc. The celebrations will culminate in a multi-sports event for children and young people at St Davids Leisure Centre. The baton will be carried by 17 bearers; 15 of which are all past or present Sporting Ambassadors from the St Davids Family of Schools. Their age

range from 10 to 19 and includes two sisters. The pupils have been chosen because they have worked hard as advocates of sport and physical activity within their respective schools, inspiring their peers to take part in sport on a regular basis. The remaining 2 bearers are Roy Stephens of Broad Haven and Barry Webb of Tavernspite. They carried the Queens Baton through Haverfordwest and Eglwyswrw respectively, prior to the 1958 British Empire & Commonwealth Games which was hosted in Cardiff. The Cardiff Games introduced the Queens Baton Relay, which has been a prelude to every Commonwealth Games ever since.

Pembrokeshire County Councillor Elwyn Morse, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said the visit of the relay is a great honour for the County. “While the Queen’s Baton Relay is in Pembrokeshire, it will mean that the media spotlight will be on the County. I am sure it’s presence will generate a great deal of excitement and galvanise support for Welsh athletes at the Commonwealth Games.” The public will be able to view the baton in St Davids on the morning of Wednesday, 28th May, during its Pembrokeshire leg of the journey.

Bronze Ambassador Training Throughout January and February, the primary schools within the area were visited by 5x60 officer Dan Bellis accompanied by the Silver Young Ambassadors for Sport from Ysgol Bro Gwaun. With help from these current ambassadors, pupils in years 4 and 5 underwent training to become ambassadors for sport within their own schools. These Primary schools included Ysgol Bro Ingli, Ysgol Glannau Gwaun, Ysgol Ger-y-llan, Ysgol Llanychllwydog, Wolfscastle School, Puncheston School and Ysgol Wdig. To begin with, pupils watched videos focusing on sport within Pembrokeshire and the recent Olympic and Paralympic games held in London, and the upcoming Commonwealth games in Glasgow. Following this, the new ambassadors were able to identify the important qualities of a sports ambassador and

recognise when they would need to be used. Finishing with small quizzes and team building exercises, the pupils were able to create action plans deciding what they can do to motivate other pupils and improve sport within their individual schools. All participants contributed extremely well in the sessions and have promised to promote the value of sport and 5x60 in the future

Pilot – Milford Have The main purpose of this pilot is to develop physical activity pathways through a cluster approach between schools and the community. The AYP Officer is responsible for the development of new and additional extra curricula activities in partnership with the target secondary school, cluster primary schools, local community and voluntary sporting organisations. Eight schools have been selected within the Milford Haven pilot area, to include Milford Haven, Hubberston, St.Francis, Coastlands, The Meads, Hakin, Milford Haven Junior and Johnston. The AYP Officer has already begun to strengthen links between Milford Haven School and its feeder primaries by liaising with primary school Headteachers and PE coordinators. Each term 2 primary schools will be selected to focus on any areas for development as discussed between the AYP Officer, Headteachers and PE coordinators. This term the AYP Officer has worked with both St.Francis School and Hubberston School. At St. Francis School a new Multiskills after school club for early years was set up every Tuesday and a Street Dance after school club every Thursday which was delivered by local Dance teacher Finola Findlay. As a result of this club, 15 extra pupils have been

regularly attending Finola’s community Dance Club which has seen a 50% increase in numbers in her classes. A Tag Rugby after school club has also been set up for pupils in Yr 4-6 at Hubberston School and this took place on Thursdays. A new Junior Tennis after school club starts in March for Yr 5 and 6 pupils from St.Francis and Hubberston Schools and this will take place at Milford Haven School in the Sports Hall. Leadership training opportunities are provided by the AYP Officer to students at Milford Haven School which aim to improve leadership skills, particularly organisational, communication and time management skills. 52 Year 10 pupils completed a Young Leaders Organisers Award Course this term which was run over 2 days by the AYP Officer. These young leaders will be deployed into our family of schools to assist and deliver a range of sessions, including Netball, Hockey, Tag Rugby, Hockey, MultiSkills and Tennis as well as assisting and delivering at Festivals, Transition Events and competitions. Within the community, a new U11 section of the existing Milford Junior Netball club has been set up on Tuesday evenings at the Meads Leisure Centre, linking with Netball Community Coach

Jemma Scourfield, as an exit route from Netball clubs within their own Schools. Initially there was a need for more junior coaches and one Milford Haven student recently completed their Starting Out Netball Qualification with two more due to do the same soon with all three pupils hoping to build on this in the near future. The AYP officer is also working on creating a new community based, Junior Tennis club in Milford Haven providing further opportunities for those pupils who are involved in tennis activities at their schools. Links have also been made with the Hockey Development Officer, Angela Miles, where a Primary Schools Hockey festival took place at Milford Haven School on Monday 10th February. Nine of the recently trained AYP Young Leaders assisted in the delivery of this festival which proved very to be very successful. Dragon Cricket The Dragon Cricket Awards have long been the heartbeat of Cricket in Pembrokeshire with a long line of players coming through the system and playing for their club, region and beyond. Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches (PACC) have been responsible for organising these competency awards where children from as young as 6 years old can attend to start learning their craft. These awards start at Dragon 1, and children can progress all the way through to Dragon 5 by attending indoor winter training sessions. This has also been the avenue that regional coaches have used to select their squads at the younger age groups. In recent years they have helped to develop some very good cricketers that have played for England schools, these being Steven Inward and Andrew Salter, with the later going on from Captaining England to become a professional cricketer with Glamorgan. Andrew who fully supports the awards says that “partaking in the Dragon Cricket Awards allowed me to test my skills and discover more about the game. It covered a whole array of skills and techniques, which often were out of my comfort zone. It was done in a stimulating and enjoyable fashion that encouraged me to continue.

Making these courses a success has been down to PACC and in particular one man, Stuart Beresford. Stuart has been administrating the awards for a very long time, organising venues and coaches to run the sessions, promoting the courses as well as inputting the data electronically on to the system. But I’m sure the highlight would be organizing the awards evening where every Dragon is invited to receive their certificates. This has been a monumental effort from Stuart to coordinate this project, and all those that have been fortunate to experience the sport through the Dragon structure have Stuart to thank for it. In recent years it has become more difficult to sustain these courses. The number of Dragons attending has lowered significantly and coaches are more and more difficult to find. Therefore from Summer 2014 there will changes in the way that the awards are delivered. Dragon 1 and 2 will be delivered through the clubs, with PACC responsible for organising the winter courses for Dragon 3, 4 and 5. The hope is that more children will go through the award by undertaking them as part of their weekly club training, and it will also give club coaches a programme of sessions to follow. Every club in the county will receive relevant information before the season begins. For further information on Dragon Awards then please contact either Rhidian Harries, Cricket Development Officer on 07920 702570.
