Enthusiastic crowds greeted the Queen’s Baton Relay as it made its way through St Davids this morning (Wednesday, 28th May). The Baton was visiting the city as part of its Welsh leg as it travels to Glasgow for the opening of the Commonwealth Games this summer. It was carried from Bishops Palace, through the Cathedral and onto the St Davids sports hall by 16 local people.

Throughout the remainder of the morning, St Davids sports hall hosted a variety of sports events for children and teenagers to sample. The Baton was carried on most of its route by a number of young people, aged between ten to 19, who are all past or present members of the St Davids Family of Schools.

who carried the Baton when the Commonwealth Games was held in Cardiff in 1958. The Baton contains a message from HM The Queen to be read at the opening of the Commonwealth Games on 23rd July.

Also acting as bearers were two local men – Roy Stephens and Barry Webb both in their 70s –

Outside the Cathedral the Baton was blessed by the Bishop of St Davids, The Right Reverend Wyn Evans. When the Baton reached Cross Square it was welcomed by the Chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Councillor Tom Richards, and the Mayor of St Davids, Councillor David Halse. At the end of the 1,000 metre journey it was received by County Council Leader, Councillor Jamie Adams and members of the public had the opportunity to be photographed with the Baton.

Pembrokeshire Baton Bearers . . . a day to remember Alys Perry – The letter came through the post, saying I was chosen as a baton bearer. My mother and I were bouncing with excitement in the kitchen. It became even more amazing when my sister, Rhian received her letter through the post too! My sister and I thought it was an incredible experience one which we will never forget. I felt honoured to be chosen, and what made it even more special was the fact that Rhian was walking beside me. On the day of the commonwealth baton bearing it felt as though it was our chance for the 'Young Ambassadors' to be mini celebrities in Pembrokeshire and in Wales. I was astonished by the large number of supporters that came out that early morning to watch. I was shocked by all the cameras and film crew which followed us up the street. I felt as though the whole community was coming together. Whilst holding the baton with Luke (another young ambassador) we watched the crowd surround us as we walked up the street to the St. Davids Hall. Everyone was watching, cheering and waving flags with appreciation and happiness. The bright blue T-shirts we wore are a reminder of that day, and the part we played in promoting and celebrating the Commonwealth games in Scotland this year. The whole experience was surreal but the memory will be treasured for many years to come. ———————::——————— Chloe Price – I felt really ecstatic it was the day I’d been longing for. I was a little anxious that I’d be late because I’d just come back from competing in the Urdd Eisteddfod at Bala. I felt very proud to have been given this opportunity to carry the baton especially with Mr Roy Stephens who’d previously been a baton bearer in 1958. It will be a special memory that I’ll never forget. ———————::——————— Gethin Rowlands – 'It was a great privilege to carry the baton in St.Davids on the Pembrokeshire leg of its journey around the commonwealth. I felt honoured to represent Ysgol Dewi Sant and the youth of the local area. The experience has reminded myself and others that we can all be united through the medium of sport.' ———————::——————— Tom Dufton – I felt really excited going to bed because I’d been waiting for this day. On the actual morning I was worried that I might drop the baton. It was a happy occasion with my parents, sister, grandparents, aunty and cousins supporting me. I’m delighted I was given the chance to carry the baton and although it was heavy I didn’t drop it.

Dafydd Cotton – On 28th May I was lucky enough to be a Commonwealth Baton Bearer. I had to be at St David’s Sports Hall by 6.45am and got given a special t-shirt. We practised with a hockey stick and then we walked to our positions. I stood by the Cathedral listening to Cymdeithas Porth Y Twr (St David’s hand bell group) while the baton crossed the river Alun. After it was blessed by the bishop Emily and I took the baton through the Cathedral and out to the bells of the bell tower. It was amazing and felt magical representing my school and family. ———————::——————— Mary Raymond – When I received the letter saying that I’d been chosen to carry the Queen’s Baton I was so happy I couldn’t contain my excitement. When I got to St David’s on the 28th May my stomach was full of butterflies. I went in the Sports Hall and we were given a t-shirt, a map and we were partnered with a bearer from YDS, my partner was called Gethin. It was at this point that I started to get excited. When I got the baton in my hands it felt amazing, I was over the moon. We had been told to walk slowly and smile – there were cameras everywhere! When we got to Oriel y Parc we had more photos. I couldn’t believe I was holding the Commonwealth baton, I felt so special. I was interviewed by BBC Cymru News at the sports hall and told them how proud I was to represent my school. ———————::——————— Emily Beacroft – Being a baton bearer was an amazing experience that I will never forget, I felt honoured to carry the baton along with my partner Dafydd. The crowds gathered and were so supportive, despite the early start! There were two baton bearers who had carried the baton before when they were younger, I found these men so inspiring as they showed everyone how the commonwealth games have touched so many generations and continue to inspire the next generations to come. Being involved in such a prestigious event was unforgettable and it is nothing like I will ever experience again. I have so much respect for the organizers and athletes of the commonwealth games, well done, you have done amazing so far and I have no doubt the games will be just as impressive as the baton bearing. Thank you for letting me be involved in such an amazing event. ———————::——————— Holly Davies – I felt very privileged to get the opportunity to carry the Queen’s Baton and also very lucky to represent Ysgol Bro Dewi and the City of St Davids. I felt nervous and very proud, it was a great day.

Cameron Thomas – It was a fun experience I wasn’t at all nervous about it. I can’t remember why I got picked to do it but I was just very proud and happy to be chosen to carry the Queen’s Baton. In the afternoon I took part in a Duathlon, I won this event for my age group so was very happy. ———————::——————— Steph Harris – It was such an honour to be a part of the baton relay around St.Davids and it was great to see the support from the locals who created a brilliant atmosphere. The baton relay was not only a success but it has helped to put St.Davids and Ysgol Dewi Sant on the map, a larger audience can now see how much the small city and Pembrokeshire County has to offer. ———————::——————— Kieran Owen, Roch Community School – I was lucky enough to be chosen to carry the Commonwealth Baton and represent my school. I felt valued and proud, excited and happy, though also a little nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. It was an amazing day, a once in a lifetime opportunity I will always remember.

Luke Lewis, Roch School aged 11 – What an Honour – Finally the morning had arrived, the day I was going to become a Queens Common Wealth baton bearer. Early start woke up at 6am, I had to be at St Davids for 6:45am to be prepared for the important task ahead of me. I remember feeling excited but nervous as well, but that was later to change into what a great privilege and honour I had been given. Something I am going to remember for the rest of my life. The time had come for me to receive the baton, crowds of people and cameras everywhere. It felt like I was someone famous with all the paparazzi wanting to get a picture of me, but I had to concentrate on holding the baton, I felt very honoured that I had been chosen for this special occasion and to be able to share it with my friends and family.

Inspirational Bronze Young Ambassador One inspirational Young Ambassador for sport has encouraged the pupils in his primary school in Manorbier to be fit and active this academic year through his role as a Sport Pembrokeshire Bronze Young Ambassador. He has been busy auditing his fellow pupils on their sporting preferences, making posters and organised many extracurricular Dragon Sports clubs. One of the most successful clubs he has set up is a morning running club, which takes place every morning after break. This club specifically helped the promotion of the Tenby 2k Beach Run, Pembs Go Tri and Taff Kids events this term, which encouraged and prepared children from Manorbier School to enter these events.

All of these clubs have had mass participation and made an impact on pupil’s motivation and behaviour thanks to his involvement in coordinating sporting activities. Sharon Davies, Head Teacher at Manorbier School said “He has always been a keen sportsman from a young age and shows great commitment to sport. His enjoyment and drive in all sporting areas is so evident yet he is a humble and gracious competitor. He has worked really hard alongside staff and encouraged positive attitudes towards sports; this is most evident in the sorts of clubs that he has been encouraging within school. There is a running club which takes place in the morning before break and there are hoards of participants with broad smiles and an eagerness to improve. He is fantastic in

helping others to develop their skills and shows great patience and perseverance. He uses wise words and the children really respond to his peer tutoring. Who knows what the next step will be, with his continued drive and enthusiasm we hope to see great things in the future”.

Secondary School Girls Cricket

Wales finals at St Fagans Cricket Club as did the two girls only teams.

Kwik Cricket The Summer term is always popular with Pembrokeshire schools as a large proportion enter into the Pembrokeshire Kwik Cricket competitions and 2014 was no exception. The standard of cricket played was as high as ever, with some big hitting, accurate bowling and agile fielding producing plenty of very exciting matches.

The pinnacle for all primary schools is competing in the county finals at Haverfordwest CC. This year 15 teams attended and it was a feast for all cricket lovers. The sun was shining, and after group and knockout games the final was played between Cleddau Reach VC School and Ysgol Glan Cleddau, with the latter winning an excellent final. Both teams went on to represent Pembrokeshire in the South

There was also a festival for the Special Educational Needs departments. Nine teams attended the festival following sessions delivered at their schools by Emma Summons. The children enjoyed an excellent morning where they were able to play some excellent cricket. Finally the secondary schools boys finals took place at Carew Cricket Club. The eight schools in the county, plus Dyffryn Taf school, entered the competitions at under 13 and under 15 age groups. Congratulations to all the

players but Tasker Milward were the winners at under 13’s with Greenhill coming out on top in the under 15’s age group. Every school that took part in the competitions would like to thanks all the cricket clubs that were kind enough to host festivals at their grounds. Their willingness to provide excellent facilities was an important factor in making every festival enjoyable and extremely competitive. I’m sure that everyone is looking forward to next Summer already!

The best part of 150 girls from Years 7, 8 and 9 gathered in the sunshine to enjoy and compete in one of the highlights of our sporting year. Despite stepping in late, Pembroke CC had marked out six carefully spaced festival pitches and the ground looked a picture. I personally had managed to go into some of the schools to run sessions and hopefully stimulate interest both in the game at large and in the festival itself but I had no expectation that Ysgol y Preseli would bring four teams and that we would have such a tremendous turnout. Our Active Young People Officers have to take great credit; fifteen teams, playing five games each, in three groups. In short, a whole load of clouting and running - it was brilliant. I am clear that sport for teenage girls can be every bit as dynamic, important and competitive as for their male equivalents. Amongst their peers and friends, with a ball to be smashed or slung or caught,

by Rick Walton (Community Cricket Coach) the girls got stuck in. Countless perfectly adequate deliveries were despatched for four or six; there was great energy about the fielding; bowlers did their level best to undo the batters. Proper cricket broke out. After almost non-stop action it became clear that the two most outstanding teams were Taskers A and Preseli A – although standards, I repeat, were generally high. In the final, Taskers batted first with both real application and genuine power, before fielding alarmingly well. Despite a late rally from Preseli batters, Taskers had enough in hand to win the day.

festival spanning Years 7-9 giving such a broad spectrum of girls the opportunity to play competitive cricket of this nature during school hours. Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches and Cricket Wales are supporting the development of Girls Cricket through the creation of Cricket Hubs at Hook CC, Whitland CC and Haverfordwest CC as well as developing other new junior teams at Pembroke Dock CC and Lamphey CC. Tenby Beach World Cup The 27th of June was a good day for the Tenby family of schools, thanks to a football tournament originally planned for Tenby's North Beach. However due to unpredictable weather it was moved to Greenhill school. Sports Pembrokeshire and Swansea City Football Community Trust worked in partnership to provide an excellent day out for schools in the Tenby Area. Each School represented a country; schools in attendance were Tenby Junior, St Teilos, Sageston, Stepaside, Tavernspite, St Oswalds, St Florence, Saundersfoot and Narberth. The tournament was played in a fun and sporting manner, however a winner had to be decided. St Florence School (Argentina) battled it out with penalty shoot outs in the semi finals and the finals, defeating Narberth School (Ghana) in a sudden death penalty shoot out, winning the 2014 SCFC Beach World Cup trophy.
