WHERE IT ALL STARTED: ‘The ‘Rocket’, built by

Robert Stephenson of Newcastle in 1825, pulled a load equivalent to three times its own weight at a speed of 12.5 mph (±20 km/h). With a full passenger carriage it did 24 mph (almost 40kph) and the cost of fuel was approximately 1½ d per mile. In doing so the locomotive won a premium of £500, offered by the directors of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, for the most improved locomotive of its time. Rocket’s success was one definitely that the steam locomotive was suitable as a means of general railway haulage and that speeds previously approached could be maintained’. So ran the copy of the advertising sheet that announced in 1963 Tri-ang Railways ‘Rocket’. The original model was sold without coaches but in 1964 a coach was added but later in 1968 a further two coaches were included with the locomotive, a format which remained until the following year. 1982 saw the reintroduction of Stephenson’s ‘Rocket’ presented as a limited edition in a brown, gold and sepia 5th face pack which this time was branded Hornby Railways. This model like the previous one was manufactured at Hornby’s Margate factory but so difficult was the assembly that a special team of factory workers were put together who had been involved with the original build in 1963. Stephenson's Rocket Train Pack, Centenary Year Limited Edition, #3809 00 Gauge This latest model from Hornby employs the very finest of design, tooling and assembly technology with the result that the model is as true a scale model of Stephenson’s masterpiece that is currently possible. This 1500 piece limited edition of Stephenson’s ‘Rocket’ and three 1st Class coaches, being ‘Times’, ‘Despatch’ and ‘Experience’ forms part of the Hornby Trains Centenary Year group of products and celebrates by using the 1960s packaging style of that decade. However, demand has exceeded supply and this is on the Hornby website: “Sorry the Stephenson's Rocket Train Pack, Centenary Year Limited Edition - 1963 Item code: R3809 is no longer available...We're sorry, the website has sold out of this item and we're not expecting any more stock. Your local model retailer may still have this item” https://www.hornby.com/uk-en/

The Adler ("Eagle") was the first commercially successful locomotive used for the rail transport of passengers and goods in Germany. It was designed and built in 1835 by the British railway pioneers George and Robert Stephenson in Newcastle for the Bavarian Ludwig Railway for service between Nuremberg and Fßrth. It ran there for the first time on 7 December 1835. The Adler was a steam locomotive of the Patentee type with a wheel arrangement of 2-2-2 (Whyte notation) or 1A1 (UIC classification). The Adler was equipped with a tender of type 2 T 2. The Adler is often cited as the very first locomotive used by a railway company on German soil, but as early as 1816 a serviceable steam locomotive was designed by the Royal Prussian Steelworks in Berlin. During a trial run this so-called Krigar locomotive hauled one railway wagon with a payload of almost 5 tonnes. But this vehicle was never used commercially. Nevertheless, the Adler was undoubtedly the first successfully operated locomotive in regular use in Germany. HO model #26350 available from Märklin

Modell of the Year (Germany) The number 20 is key. We are writing the year twenty-twenty, this is the 20th edition of the fair and the reader's choice "Models of the Year" led to 20 certificates this year. Who won the race?

HORNBY Celebrates the Beatles! Eurostar's Class 373 was transformed with a vinyl wrap that recreated scenes from The Beatles' film, 'Yellow Submarine' and unveiled by the surviving Beatles; Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison. At over 400 metres in length, each carriage portrayed a different design, telling a different part of the Yellow Submarine story. On 8 September 1999, with a Jazz band playing 'Yellow Submarine', sets 3005/3006 departed Waterloo on the official launch, much to the surprise of passengers booked on the service, since it was a normal departure rather than a dedicated press charter. The train retained the graphics for the next three months, operating between London, Paris and Brussels but fate was not kind to Sets 3005/3006 as, despite featuring the first advertising livery to be featured on Eurostar, the Sets were the first of the Class 373 trains to be scrapped, being sent to European Metal Recycling (EMR) at Kingsbury on 27 October 2016. Illustrated are the two sides of the Hornby 00 model #R1253M:

FAMOUS LOCOMOTIVE The South African Railways Class NG15 2-8-2 is a class of narrow-gauge steam locomotive. In 1931, three narrow-gauge Class NG15 locomotives with a 2-8-2 Mikado wheel arrangement, were acquired by the South African Railways for the Otavi Mining and Railway Company in South West Africa.

© Gary Ruddy 26 Oct 1985 #124 on Van Staden’s bridge https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_African_Class_NG15_2-8-2

Later more were purchased for the Otavi Railway and the Tsumeb Copper Company eventually bringing the total

number of these locomotives to 21 by 1958. When the narrow-gauge Otavi Railway was regauged to Cape gauge in 1960, all 21 locomotives were taken over by the South African Railways. They were transferred to the Eastern Cape for further service on the narrowgauge line from Port Elizabeth to Avontuur. Here they were nick-named ‘Kalahari’s’ to identify their origin.

By and large the populace enjoyed these trains. But they were slow and there were complaints, though usually good-natured as illustrated by this postcard dated 211-1907, addressed to “The Priory, Emerald Hill (image provided by John Carter). Check some of the crew having a cricket match while the train crawls by.

DRAISINE A draisine (English: /dreɪˈziːn/) is a light auxiliary rail vehicle, driven by service personnel, equipped to transport crew and material necessary for the maintenance of railway infrastructure. The eponymous term is derived from the German inventor Baron Karl Drais, who invented his ‘Laufmaschine’ (running machine) in 1817. The press called it Draisine in German (vélocipède or draisienne in French). It is the first reliable claim for a precursor to the bicycle; basically the first commercially successful two-wheeled, steerable, human-propelled machine, nicknamed hobby-horse or dandy horse. Later, the name draisine came to be applied only to the invention used on rails and was extended to similar vehicles, even when not human-powered. Because of their low weight and small size, they can be put on and taken off the rails at any place, allowing trains to pass. In the United States, motor-powered draisines are known as speeders while humanpowered ones are referred as handcars. Vehicles that can be driven on both the highway and the rail line are called road–rail vehicles, or (after a trademark) Hy-Rails. Draisines nowadays are used for recreation on several unused railway lines in Germany, Sweden, Norway, Poland, some other European countries and South Korea. Several companies rent draisines. In the United States, railbike tours have operated in several states nationwide. Until 2007, Finland hosted an annual competition, Resiina-ralli (Draisine Rally), involving several draisine teams travelling for many days on the railways from one corner of the country to another. https://www.visitnorway.com/listings/draisine-cycling-along-the-namsen-river/208953/ https://railbikes.nz/ https://www.forgottenworldadventures.co.nz/ http://draisinentour.de/en https://www.dvvj.se/en/draisine-2/

The first motor vehicles used for the inspection of railroads appeared in Canadian Railways in the early 20th century. The first such car belonging to Canadian Pacific was a Ford model converted in 1908 by Dr A Smith, an occupational physician at Medicine Hat, Alberta. In 1953, the CP had 23 motor vehicles for the inspection of railways on its lines. They were used by operators or track maintenance employees to perform short inspections. The automobile illustrated here is the 1947 Cadillac model built by General Motors. It has been modified so that it can only be used on railway tracks: The tyres have been replaced by metal wheels; a complete air system has been installed; the frame of the vehicle has been reinforced; each side has been equipped with two running boards. A turntable has been installed to allow 180 degree rotation. Four additional white and green lights were added. The large size of the seats, front and back, permits it to carry up to 8 people.

PRECISION MINIATURES South Africa (Rod Hering) https://precisionminiatures.co.za/ Precision Miniatures are the Southern African distributors for the DJH Engineering range of HO scale model locomotives. Precision Miniatures along with 3 like-minded partners are building what is anticipated to be a showpiece layout depicting the heydays of the South African Railways in the 60’s and 70’s. The track will be prototypically correct 12mm gauge. The minimum standards for the layout are that all main line curves will be 1 metre or larger in radius. Curves in yards will 750mm or larger and the maximum gradient will be 2.5%. This will be contained in a 10×6 metre room. The track plan has been designed with prototypical operations in mind and the scenery and structures will loosely represent the Breyten, Lothair, and Carolina area of what used to be known as the Eastern Transvaal. It is designed for end to end operation with the option of circular running for open days. The railway will service, agricultural, timber, quarrying industries along with through trains of block coal loads. Industries will include grain silos, fuel depots, sawmill, rock crusher, cement distribution, cattle, dairy, general freight and passenger operations. Motive power will be predominantly steam with early generation diesels. Construction Brief The plan encompasses two typical platteland towns. The larger town, at the top of the plan, will feature a large steam shed along with a typical incline coaling stage, ash pits and turning wye. Incorporated in the steam facility will be workshops and other typical structures as well as a diesel shed and fuel depot. There will be a 2.3 metre long passenger platform and typical platteland station building and other ancillary structures like Post Office, Lamp shed etc. There will be a large 2 track goods shed within the station area. To the east of town will be a large grain silo and mill complex, fuel distribution depot, cattle docks and one or two smaller rail served industries. The second town will feature a smaller passenger station and single steam shed and small coaling stage with a turntable. This facility will be mainly for helper engines for heavy west bound trains. This town will feature a large sawmill complex, smaller grain silo and three or four other rail served industries. The main street behind the station will feature typical platteland town buildings like a bank, art deco petrol station, general dealers and railway hotel. The open track between towns will be single track with one passing loop at a small wayside station. One of the focal points will be a 5 span truss bridge, 2 metres in length over a typical river. 22
