Customer Reviews Here are some of our most recent customer reviews: “While visiting Penarth recently with my wife I wanted to find a special restaurant to celebrate her birthday. Luckily we choose to go to The Fig Tree with friends and what a wonderful night it was. The setting is ideal with views overlooking the seafront. The staff were very helpful, polite and the food was well cooked, well presented and tasted delicious. If you are looking for that little bit extra for a special evening I can recommend The Fig Tree.” “A great location on the seafront and well refurbished premises make this a real experience. Roast beef was really good, the melt in your mouth type and we thought it was really good until we had the Apple and Pear crumble. Well, it was magnificent, a real twist on the theme with plenty of fruit and going easy on the crumble served with proper custard.”

Twenty-eight years of building quality loft conversions and home extensions takes a concrete form for Penarth builder ABC. The company won the Vale of Glamorgan’s Building Quality Award for Excellence, and won the Federation of Master Builders of Wales award in November 2010. “We’ll be in London on March 11th up against the rest of the country for a UK award,” says ABC proprietor Alan Grant. Advanced Building Contractors, to give the company its full name, was established in 1988. Originally a professional shipwright/ boat builder, Alan decided to train as a carpenter and joiner and is always a handson operator on his customers’ homes. “ABC specialises mainly in loft conversions and extensions but we also do kitchen and bathroom renovations. I have a skilled workforce including carpenters, plasters, plumbers and electricians so I can ensure that every area of the job is done to the highest standard of workmanship, customer service and quality,” says Alan. “Being a carpenter I’m on the tools myself, and I work on the premises until the job’s finished. We stay on site throughout – and we’re there when we say we’ll be there!” As well as working on ABC’s awardwinning building projects, Alan has been lending his expertise to a home renovation TV show called ‘If It’s Not Broke, Don’t Fix It’ featuring Big Brother’s Craig Phillips,

to be aired in March, advising the show’s producers on various health and safety and structural issues.

lots of ‘green’ features – hence the ICB solar panels and other specialist fittings. It’s an exciting growth area to be involved with,” says Alan.

The future is solar Another new direction for ABC is as the agent of ICB solar panels. “ICB is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of roofing products and systems offering green, sustainable options for all buildings. They are MCS accredited and their products include the latest innovation in photovoltaic solar panel roofing tiles systems, Evalon®Solar,” says Alan. Ideal for a changeable climate like Wales’s, Evalon®Solar does not need direct sunlight. Instead, it works with diffused light. “ICB approached me after hearing about one of our awards and I jumped at the chance to get involved with them. A major new TV studio is to be built in Cardiff Bay for production of shows such as Dr Who and Torchwood, and it is designed to have

Ask ener-chi The team at ener-chi are happy to receive questions on all aspects of natural health care, nutrition, herbal remedies and complimentary therapies. Email your questions to info@ener-chi.co.uk and you will receive a personal reply and could be featured in the next Penarth View, anonymously if you wish.

Sleep and well-being Dear ener-chi I wonder if you could recommend a natural remedy to help me sleep. I am fit and healthy but my mind is so active lately I just can’t switch off. Also, my daughter has exams coming soon and I wondered if there was anything that would help her to keep calm and focused. Sue, Penarth

Hi Sue I’m sorry to hear that you are having difficulty sleeping. Some slumber solutions are to avoid stimulating caffeine in drinks such as coffee and tea (try herbal ones instead). Make your bedroom a restful haven – no TV. Try to avoid eating late as it keeps your digestive system busy and stops you relaxing. Make a list of anything that is on your mind and put it away until morning. Have a warm bath with eight drops of lavender essential oil or put some lavender oil on a tissue under your pillow – it really does work.

To help your daughter focus her mind essential oil of basil is brilliant. The aromatherapy company Tisserand makes a roller ball called Clear Head – you rub it on to pulse points for instant brain stimulation. Good luck.

There are many helpful herbal preparations, including Avena Sativa, valerian, hops and sage. All these herbs are available from ener-chi and other health stores.

Valerian - Traditionally used to reduce muscle spasms, it has a sedating effect on mind and body and is often combined with hops.

Last year, Penarth’s lifeboats launched 59 times and rescued 95 people. The 40-strong team of volunteers give their own time and commitment to help save lives at sea, writes Penarth lifeboat press officer Claire Kingston. Penarth RNLI lifeboat station is one of 230 around the coast of the UK and Ireland. Independent of the Coastguard and government, the RNLI – Royal National Lifeboat Institution – relies completely on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Covering part of the Bristol Channel, Penarth operates two inshore lifeboats: the Atlantic 85, and a smaller D class boat; in 2009, the crew had its busiest year ever and launched 65 times, rescuing 85 people.

RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea

Crewed entirely by volunteers, all of whom live or work locally, the Penarth Lifeboat team also hold down ‘day jobs’ from a hugely diverse range of professions, giving their time and commitment to save lives at sea. Volunteers perform a variety of roles, from the operational, seagoing crew who comprise helms and crew members, tractor drivers who tow the boat in and out of the water, Deputy Launching Authorities who give the boat permission to launch and direct the crew, mechanics who ensure that the equipment is in tiptop condition, fundraisers who work tirelessly to encourage donations to the charity, and a management team including training staff, education and sea safety staff, publicity staff, financial officers and medical advisors. Due to its position on the Esplanade, at the heart of the community, Penarth RNLI has been lucky enough to receive generous donations from a variety of local sources. For example, one Penarth resident reached her 90th birthday and asked friends and relatives to give money – £600 in total – to Penarth RNLI in place of cards and presents. Local businesses such as the Hilton Hotel, Cardiff Waterside, Wilmott Dixon and HMS 69 have specifically chosen to raise funds for the RNLI. These donations enable the crew to continue to receive the very best equipment and training so they are able to save lives at sea. The equipment includes the brand new, state of the art Atlantic 85 – the most advanced inshore lifeboat ever produced by the RNLI – which was donated in 2010 to Penarth lifeboat station by the Maureen Lilian Charitable Trust. “It was a busy year for the Penarth RNLI and once again the seagoing crew and shore helpers have provided first class service and

have proved their commitment and dedication to helping save lives at sea,” says Philip Lay, lifeboat operations manager for Penarth, reviewing 2010. “Every time the boat is launched crew members stop what they’re doing and give up their own time to rush to the lifeboat station as quickly as possible. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a relatively simple job, such as towing a broken down boat back to safety, or a life-threatening situation such as rescuing people from a capsized boat – the crew treat each one in a professional, efficient way. “I’m convinced that the number of call-outs in the Penarth area has been lessened by the excellent preventive work of our Penarth Sea Safety team who, over the past year, have been out and about talking about safety issues with the local boating community.”

Free advice on staying safe The Sea Safety team –Penarth RNLI’s deputy launching authority Laurie Pavlin, along with Penarth sailing experts Colin Lyons and Paul Stewart-Davies – attend Penarth Marina, discussing safety and providing tips and guidance on emergency procedures, and the maintenance of safety equipment. “Every year our lifeboats respond to thousands of incidents, many of which could have been prevented with simple safety precautions,” says Laurie. “We provide free, friendly, face to face, practical advice that takes place on board our customers’ boats. We look at safety equipment, radios, flares, life rafts, and also point boat users in the direction of relevant training courses and other services.”

In July the team provided a life jacket clinic at Penarth Marina during which more than 40 people brought their life jackets for a free safety check and service. “As a charity, we rely completely on donations to keep our crew highly trained, and our equipment second to none, which is why we are so grateful for all the fundraising that the people of Penarth have done for us,” says Philip.

New shoots of hope this Spring

It’s been a rather unsettling year for those in business - and some would say there are more economic challenges ahead. However, I’m taking a more optimistic view, bolstered by a few shoots of hope that have sprung up earlier this year. According to Reed, the UK’s largest recruitment website, private sector job vacancies rose steeply in January 2011 – an encouraging sign that confidence is growing, and as we await the full effects of imminent public sector cuts, news that private sector job creation is moving in the right direction is welcome indeed. Elsewhere, predictions of gloom surrounding the VAT increase also thankfully seem to be unfounded, with a recent report by accountancy software provider Intuit showing that more than two-thirds of small to medium enterprises feel the rise has had no impact on their organisation. Given that this is the third VAT rate adjustment in less than three years, business owners are well versed in coping with the change. Other promising news is that the CBI are predicting economic growth in 2011 and business start ups in Wales seem to be flourishing. Fuelled either by redundancy concerns or simply a long held ambition to be one’s own boss, many seem to be embracing the spirit of entrepreneurship and joining our diverse Welsh SME culture. So as the Spring begins to bloom, hopefully the business outlook for us all will be a little rosier....

Considering a new venture?

Like any life changing decision starting a new business is not one to be taken lightly. Before embarking on a new venture, ask yourself what you want to do and why – and whilst setting up might seem like your biggest challenge, you also need to keep an eye on the end game. What is your vision for the future – to build a business with longevity to give your family security? To fill your spare time to fit around the kids? To deliver a “quick win” with a defined exit strategy? Whatever your rationale, any entrepreneur needs a few basics: Planning – a robust business plan with forecast is essential, not only to secure funding should you require it, but also to keep you focussed and on track

Cash is king

Top tips for managing cashflow... •Review bonus / incentive schemes: for a healthy cash flow review your current schemes e.g. pay bonuses on receipt of payment rather than on order •Credit control: look, listen and learn... keep an eye on your clients’ situation, listen to feedback from your staff and take action accordingly. Consider reducing credit limits and payment timescales or request payment on receipt. For enhanced information on your clients situation consider signing up to credit reports where you will be notified of changes to their current credit rating •See the whole picture: ensure you have clear visibility of what is owed in and out so that you can manage cash accordingly •Invoicing: implement a process to invoice clients as soon as possible and ensure all invoice details are up to date so as not to delay payments

People – a successful entrepreneur surrounds themselves by good people, be it an accountant, marketing adviser, IT support, loyal staff and an understanding bank manager... plus a little help from friends and family Passion – enthusiasm is priceless! •Incentivise clients: consider offering early settlement discounts to certain customers to keep cash flowing in •Take control: too much stock can impact cash flow, so regularly monitor stock levels and negotiate shorter lead times with suppliers to reduce the amount of stock held at any one time •Go electronic: payments made via cheque typically have a 5 day turnaround time before you may draw on them; a speedier and easier method of receiving payments is via BACS, or for enhanced cash flow management encourage regular clients to pay via direct debit •Strike a deal: typically in a recession it’s a buyers’ market so don’t be afraid to negotiate preferential rates with your suppliers – whether that be early settlement discounts or longer credit terms. Don’t forget to monitor invoices to ensure they are not pre-dated •Take action: ensure you have a robust cash collection policy including a step by step management plan e.g. an initial letter, followed up by a telephone call, a final warning letter and court action. Alternatively you may wish to outsource this stress to a third party for a fee

Your mother always told you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and Tim Warwick at breakfast @ timothy’s is happy to agree. Just opened in January this year, breakfast @ timothy’s is a traditional breakfast cafe with a bright eclectic atmosphere plus some added extras to keep customers happy. “We offer delicious traditional breakfasts using locally sourced and free range produce wherever possible, and all at amazingly competitive prices,” says Tim. Located next to Penarth Station, breakfast @ timothy’s is ideally situated for both eating in and takeaway breakfasts. “We do takeaway bacon rolls with tea or coffee for £3, and for a traditional full breakfast there’s the Basic Timothy: egg, bacon, sausage and toast. For big appetites we also have the Timothy Big Boy, which has two of everything for a hearty start to the day.

“Our eggs are free range Cherry Orchard from St Donat’s and our sausages are proper 75 per cent meat ones,” says Tim. As well as the food breakfast @ timothy’s provides free wi-fi access, free newspapers and a 42inch plasma screen showing news channels or playing music throughout the day to keep customers happy. Tim has plans to expand the menu gradually over the coming months. “At the moment we’re concentrating on the breakfasts, which are available all day. “We also serve home-made sandwiches and Danish pastries, and we’re developing a menu of daily lunchtime ‘comfort food’ specials. For the summer we’ll add salads to the list as well.”

Newly opened in January this year Alley Cat Ink, Penarth’s only tattoo studio, is run by husband and wife team Justin and Christina Witney in Glebe Street.

“The taboos that once hovered around tattoos have disappeared over recent years as more celebrities and people in the public eye display their tattoos – think of David Beckham and Cheryl Cole, or Samantha Cameron’s ankle – and today people want tattoos mainly for decoration and/or sentimental reasons,” says Justin. “The popularity of those celebrities and their image as fashion icons has led to a huge growth in tattooing and new shops are opening up everywhere,” says Justin. Alley Cat Ink is a family business, and clients’ children are welcome. They also offer ear-piercing, currently by Christina, and accept children from the age of seven. “I’ve been a fan of tattoos for a long time and after a lot of research into it I got several of my own. Then I became more interested in the

creative side of tattooing and I decided to learn the art and train to do it myself.” Developments in tattoo pigments and the refinement of the equipment used for tattooing have led to an improvement in the quality of tattoos being produced. “It’s been a long process of learning the skills over two years. I took the time off work to train and study the craft. “The training involved all the essential hygiene issues and how to run a business as well as the technical side. “My work is artistically based and my approach is to offer customers the most creative and best quality tattoos for them,” says Justin.

Special Offer For a limited time only: “All You Can Ink!” Daytime Tuesdays and Wednesdays, pay for 3 hours of tattooing and we’ll work as long as you can take it. Conditions apply. Call Alley Cat Ink for full details.

“Rather than simply selecting a design from a chart on the wall or a book my clients can bring their ideas to me and we will work up the design for their tattoo together. That way I can advise people on the best options for them, in terms of the design and where they want to put it, and how to care for it afterwards so it lasts. “Tattoos are very much part of people’s self-expression, and there is a demand for quality work, so hopefully Alley Cat Ink will fill that niche here in Penarth.”

Early spring is the ideal time to plan improvements to your home’s external areas, and Jonathan Webb Paving has the experience and expertise to provide patios, driveways and paving that will beautify and add value to the property. Jonathan has been in the landscaping and paving business for more than 20 years, and brings his extensive skills, practical experience and personal customer service to every job. “The right landscaping and garden products will bring your garden or outdoor space alive,” says Jonathan. “We can make play areas, paths, decks and patios for al fresco dining, with a huge range of paving products to choose from, whether you prefer traditional or contemporary styles.” “Natural stone, concrete paving, block paving and gravels can all be used in the design of a garden, depending on the customer’s requirements. We also install artificial lawn, which looks great. “It’s ideal for our climate and it’s so practical too: no more mowing, obviously, and you need never worry again about too much or too little rain. It’s pet-friendly, water drains through it and there are different grades of the product depending on the intended use, whether children will be playing on it, and so on.”

A small area of artificial lawn can give a great contrast against patios and surrounding greenery. Keen golfers can install their very own putting green. New drives are also in high demand, says Jonathan. “A well-designed, attractive off-street parking spot provides a easy, convenient and secure place for your car, and adds value to your home. “You can choose low maintenance, oil-resistant block paving or traditional gravel, for durable solutions that will last for years and meet the relevant surface water drainage regulations.” With 20 years in the business and more than 2000 happy customers, Jonathan has built a reputation for quality which he can back up with written guarantees. “We provide a five-year warranty on installation plus a 10-year warranty on the Brett Landscaping products we install.”

ngagement, wedding and eternity rings are always very special pieces and represent love and family in a distinctively personal way for everyone. Northern Star bespoke jewellery craftsman Matt Mullooly will create a unique piece of jewellery to reflect your feelings and suit your style and budget. Matt combines his experience, design and stone-setting skills with the latest CAD Matrix technology to create individual bespoke jewellery. Here are some recent examples of his work, and the clients’ comments.

Wedding belle The client says: “I wanted my wedding band to consist of the diamonds from my grandmother’s eternity ring and I also wanted it to match with my engagement ring. Matt at Northern Star directed and advised on the style and shape and produced 100 per cent what I imagined and wanted. “The service was first class. Matt was friendly, confident and couldn’t do enough to create the perfect wedding band. Exactly what you want as a ‘bride to be’.”

The client says: “We booked an appointment with Matt at Northern Star, and went along with an idea in mind. I’ve always wanted a pear-shaped engagement ring with a coloured stone but was worried that when it came to making the wedding ring the two rings wouldn’t sit together properly.

The client says: “I had an idea for a very long time to design a ring to incorporate a diamond that I had from my late mother’s engagement ring and some smaller diamonds from my own eternity ring. I saw an advertisement from Northern Star in a local magazine describing the jewellery design service that I was looking for.

“Matthew gave me a number of options and when he showed me the shaped wedding band I fell in love with it. I can’t thank him enough – I love it and always get lots of compliments about the rings.”

“Matthew listened to my thoughts for the design of the ring and then helped create exactly what I had in mind. He was genuinely understanding, professional and patient and provided a first-class service. “I was over the moon with the final product which provided me with a new, unique and very sentimental engagement ring.
