issue 03 Welcome to the third edition of Penarth View, a truly local publication that is distributed free to the residents and businesses of Penarth. The aim and goal of Penarth View is to celebrate the diverse and vibrant community we have in Penarth where we feature quality local businesses combined with a mixture of local content, views and news. School View New to this issue we have a ‘School View’ section. Schools in the area have been asked to submit articles that are newsworthy for the community. It will be an opportunity for the schools to submit relevant local content that is pertinent not only to the catchment area of each school but also to the wider community of Penarth. A number of schools and nurseries have contributed to this issue with articles and features on pages 12 , 36 and 37.

Business View, Trade View, Health and Leisure View In this issue we have been able to organise the featured businesses into sections that focus on business, trades, health, leisure and services. In our business section we have some excellent advice from local solicitor Peter Lynn and Partners on succession planning, the volatility of the stock market and how that should not overly concern investors from Wentworth Financial Consultants, and our regular business column section from Damian Evans of IC Accountancy. In our other Views we have excellent features on local tradespeople including Nick Stout, ABC Wales, and Glamco, health and wellbeing including John Bruno Training, Osmond Drake, The Skin Studio, Touch of Elegance and our regular ‘Ask Ener-chi’ question and answer section from Judy, owner and proprietor of Ener-chi on Hickman Road.

Places to eat out I would like to draw your attention to three places either to eat out or for taking home something special. First, there is a fantastic new delicatessen on Glebe Street called Florentines. Take our word for it, Chris and Jan have created a wonderful patisserie and delicatessen with all produce freshly prepared on site and they cater to all dietary needs. Second, if you love Asian food you must try the Vegetarian Studio on Penarth Road, run by awardwinning chef Neil. It is fabulous and reminds me of when I lived in the Middle East where restaurants focus

Ask ener-chi The team at ener-chi are happy to receive questions on all aspects of natural health care, nutrition, herbal remedies and complimentary therapies. Email your questions to info@ener-chi.co.uk and you will receive a personal reply and could be featured in the next Penarth View, anonymously if you wish.

Summer-time blues Dear ener-chi, I look forward to the warmer weather with apprehension. I have what I consider to be unsightly skin tags around my neck and when the scarves are put away for the winter I am conscious of them. I have consulted my GP who confirms they are just benign skin tags.

She says it is considered a cosmetic procedure to remove them: do you offer this service or can you recommend somewhere?

For appointments or information on skin tag removal or other medical cosmetic procedures call 02920 707356

Mrs Burrows, Llandough Hi Mrs Burrows, I’m so glad you asked this question as we have recently added a Flawless Skin clinic to complement our existing services. This clinic is on a Monday evening from 5pm to 8pm and skin tag removal is available. Our independent nurse prescriber is experienced in skin tag removal, and the procedure is very straightforward. The skin tag and the area around it will be numbed, using a local anaesthetic, and then within minutes the tag can be removed with an electrocautery knife. No pain, no stitches - just flawless skin.

029 2070 9526 Osmond Drake Opticians has been part of the Penarth scene since 1958 when it was established by Ossie Drake. It’s always been a family enterprise: Ossie’s son Tim Drake, a Dispensing Optician, started working with his father in 1976 before Ossie retired in 1979 and Ossie’s grandson Marc Drake, an Optometrist, started working with his father Tim in 1995. Marc’s wife Alison Drake, a Dispensing Optician, joined Tim and Marc in 1997 and Tim retired in 2003. The practice is currently owned by the third generation of Drakes: Marc and Alison, and working with them is Optometrist Bashir Ahmed, also an important member of the practice. “We believe that sight is a precious gift that needs proper looking after, so we aim to provide the best care possible,” says Marc. When did you last have a thorough eye examination, not just a basic eyetest? Eyesight is the sense that we rely upon most, yet visual deterioration can occur very gradually and developing problems can go unnoticed, so it is very important to have our eyes examined at regular intervals.

“We use some of the most up-to-date diagnostic and medical equipment currently available, allowing us more quickly to detect a whole range of conditions. We also maintain a modern computerised system for accurate record keeping and fast, easy access to clinical needs. “But we haven’t forgotten that real eye care comes from real people and not just the best scientific and medical technology, which is why all of our advisory staff are fully qualified in their areas of expertise. “We appreciate that money doesn’t grow on trees, so we keep our prices extremely competitive when compared with large chains like-forlike, providing affordable products and services to suit all pockets.” Osmond Drake stocks a great range of fabulous frames, with labels including Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Silhouette, Maxmara, Smith Eyewear, Flexon and Hugo Boss Eyewear, and also specialises in contact lenses. “Because we are an independent practice we are able offer a wide range of contact lenses for even the most complicated of fits, such as Multifocal and Toric contact lenses,” says Marc.

“The Visioffice measuring system is the first all-encompassing 3D measuring system to allow us to obtain – with extreme accuracy – every possible parameter required for today’s spectacle lenses. With eyecode, spectacle wearers will benefit from highly contrasted, comfortable and dynamic vision immediately. “With Visioffice customers are now able to see pictures of themselves wearing their chosen frames. So if their vision is poor without specs they can actually see frames they are trying on! “In addition, we are Varilux specialists. Varilux Ipseo New Edition progressive lenses are individually designed to take into account the effects of the wearer’s head and eye movements, and with eyecode technology they deliver the highest level of personalisation in spectacle lenses.”

“We also offer a discount on second pairs and 50% on prescription sunspecs (terms and conditions apply).”

Personalised lenses the 3D way Starting in May 2011, Osmond Drake is now able to offer personalised lenses thanks to 3D measurements. “We will have the most advanced universal measuring system on the market: Essilor Visioffice,” says Alison.

Open late on Thursday nights and now open until 4:30pm on Saturdays.

029 2070 5111 Top styling for today Staying up to date with the latest trends in colour and style by training with the best people in the worlds of hairdressing keeps Carol Evans and her team at Jag Hair at the top of their game, and they have many loyal customers to prove it. “We’re fortunate that most of the top trainers come to Cardiff these days so it’s convenient for us to attend their courses.” The Jag Hair team have recently attended training sessions with world champion Errol Douglas who travelled to Wales for a workshop. Offering a full range of professional male and female hair styling services, from very traditional hair cutting and styling to more modern takes on hairdressing and colour, Jag Hair’s Glebe Street salon is fitted out to the most modern of standards. “All our staff are professionally qualified and have a wealth of experience in the styling business,” says Carol. “We are constantly seeking new and innovative ideas to pass on to clients, so we all have a continuous programme of training.

“It’s great to be able to offer all the most up to date looks and techniques to our clients. We try to give all our customers a welcoming and enjoyable experience as well as great hair – they have given us so much support and we wouldn’t be here without them!” says Carol. The two colours are BVs (brown violets) and Jag have added these colours to their colour collection. Jag always supports the new seasonal colour launches, keeping the salon bang on with trends and fashion. Carol and the team have been involved in a new salon training programme this year, with topics include getting the best reds, grey coverage and understanding blondes – all of great value to customers so they can achieve the best from their colour.

Jag Hair is open six days, with discounts for pensioners on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, plus late opening on Thursdays. “If you need an appointment outside of our normal hours of business then please contact us, we are able to accommodate most requests,” says Carol.

On your bike!

The weather is warming up at last and Spring is an ideal time to get out an about on a bicycle. Cycling is the most efficient method of selfpowered human transport, it’s as ecologically respectable as can be, great for all the family and it’s good exercise too – all excellent reasons for getting on to two wheels. Cycling’s green credentials are an important part of the business ethos of Penarth’s cycling emporium The Bike Shop, run by Mark Stephens. The business opened in August 2006 at 85 Glebe Street. “We are actively involved in promoting Penarth. We want to keep it a vibrant town and not let it die out,” says Mark. “To do this we joined GpG (Gwyrddio Penarth Greening), which has loyalty cards which give discounts in other local shops who are involved. In January we won the award for the greenest business in Penarth as we recycle old bikes.”

“As a small business we aim to bring back a personal service. We take time to listen and talk to customers so we are able to advise what’s best for them and their bikes. “Customer service and the standard of work carried out is paramount. When we are doing repairs we aim to get all our customers back riding again as quickly and as cheaply as possible. We are able to keep our costs down as we sell reconditioned parts as well as new ones.”

The Bike Shop services • Reconditioned bikes • Recycled bikes • Disability scooters repaired • Prams repaired • Environmentally friendly • Any make of new scooter supplied

Mark and his team are happy to share their expertise as well. “We try to educate our customers with regards to bike maintenance and the correct way to use your gears, etc, so you get the most out of the bike. Recycling preloved bikes is a practical demonstration of Mark’s commitment to conservation. “We will take any old bike for recycling no matter what the condition, so please don’t throw one away,” he says. “You can either drop it to the shop or give us a call. We will then recycle what we can and whatever is left we send to be commercially recycled “We also do part exchange if you want to trade up to a newer model, and we will buy bikes for sale second hand.” The Bike Shop also carries a full range of accessories, tyres, pumps, shoes and clothing. Open Monday to Saturday.

Beautiful nails are an essential finishing touch when you want to look your best, and at the Touch of Elegance beauty boutique in Cornerswell Road Jo and her team will create a unique look for your fingers and toes. Established in Penarth for four and a half years, Touch of Elegance offers the full range of manicures and pedicures, and Jo herself specialises in freehand nail art and extensions. “We have a lovely Jacuzzi foot spa for relaxation, with a back massage chair so a pedicure is a real treat,” says Jo. “I specialise in freehand nail art, with or without extensions or overlays, which is great for a special occasion. Designs are mainly flowers or bows, but we can create something a customer asks for. Swarovski crystal gems can be added for extra glamour.”

Permanently elegant

“A full lip tint has a remarkable antiageing effect on people whose lips have lost their colour and lip line sharpness,” says Jo.

“Anyone who wants to be free from having to apply makeup every day can benefit from permanent make-up,” says Jo. It is also of particular interest to people who have lost their eyelashes or eyebrows because of medical conditions, and to visually impaired people who have difficulty putting on make-up. Permanent make-up can produce subtle natural effects or be applied to look ‘made-up’.

A follow-up session included in the original price takes care of any fine details that need attention. The permanent enhancements gradually fade and procedures can be refreshed after about 12 months. Jo is happy to give full information on all the services offered by Touch of Elegance.

£10 off until 20th June 2011

Touch of Elegance has also extended into beauty, offering permanent make-up for eyes and lips, as well as aromatherapy massage, Thai foot massage and facials.

“We can do permanent eyebrows, eyelash enhancement and fine or thick eyeliner in a range of colours, with accent tones available as well as the usual brown and black shades.”

For advanced treatments a BUPAqualified technician provides fillers, wrinkle reduction and DermaRoller skin rejuvenation.

Permanent lip contouring is also an option, and lip tinting, which gives long-lasting colour that looks subtle and quite natural.

When you’re contemplating a truly original and long-lasting gift for someone you love, a unique piece of art created specially for the occasion ticks most of the boxes. Although it might not be something you’ve considered before, a commissioned artwork does not have to cost the earth. In addition, you don’t need to wonder where to find your artist: Sheridan Ward is an experienced artist, based in Penarth, and she is currently taking commissions for portraits.

As well as portraits, Sheridan paints stylised contemporary landscapes for exhibition and commission, with previous commissions including a 25ft mural for Capital FM Radio in London.

“I work predominantly in oils,” says Sheridan. “I am happy to paint any subject including babies, children, adults and pets.

Large scale impasto oil paintings make statement pieces for any interior. Sheridan is happy to discuss possible commissions and is open to any creative challenge.

A client says: “We wanted a portrait of our daughter before the teenage years kicked in! Sheridan was excellent - she put our daughter at ease and involved us in all stages of the process. Sheridan’s portrait captured our daughter’s likeness and unique personality perfectly, and will be treasured for generations to come.” Sheridan offers a full personal service, from photo to framing. For portraits she works from a photo, either supplied or she will take one. Life sittings can be arranged if preferred.

Prices for a commissioned oil portrait start from £600 with a discount for second or subsequent orders.

Offer For a limited period, Sheridan is offering readers of Penarth View a first portrait for £500.* * Offer ends 31st December 2011. Not to be used in conjunction with any other offer.

It’s welcome news that Cardiff Council and WAG will commit a combined £60m to create a new Central Business District (CBD) in the heart of the city, creating 4million sq ft of office space and stretching across some 140 acres from the bus station, past Callaghan Square and into Cardiff Bay. Over the next 12 to 18 months, Callaghan Square will be overhauled to create a public square and new road layout.

Hmrc targets poor record keeping smes A HMRC proposal indicates that 50,000 SMEs could be investigated during the second half of 2011 under its “Business Records Checks” initiative, which will target organisations who hold poor trading records, dating back over the past six years. The investigations will focus on organisations with fewer than 250 employees and a turnover of less than €50 million. It will typically take half a day to complete the review of company records which will include cheque stubs, till rolls/sales records, plus bank and credit card statements. Penalties will be imposed for significant record keeping failures which could see fines up to £3,000; SMEs may also be exposed to formal tax enquiries as a result. The scheme aims to raise £600 million in additional revenue over the next four years for the taxman. There are a number of records you need to keep, dependant on your business size, sector and the different taxes that you have to pay, collect or charge. Are Markets Really Volatile? Recent share price fluctuations made us review the degree of market volatility over the past 20 years or so. What stands out in particular is not so much how markets have moved (on a monthly basis) since the start of 2008, but how little they did during the previous four years. Looking at the FTSE 100 on a monthly basis, the movements ranged from +11.5% in May 1990 to -13% in September 2008. Only in a handful of cases were there more than three or four consecutive months of decline. Equally, only in a few instances were there long ‘Bull’ runs, where values increased each month for more than six months.

The key message is that markets are inherently volatile and short term movements (upwards as well as downwards) should not overly concern investors.

Putting this into context, at the end of December 2010, the FTSE 100 was almost 150% higher than in January 1990, so volatility in the intervening years has not done much harm over the longer term. If you look at the 15 years since January 1996, the FTSE 100 grew by 60%, while it currently stands at 12% lower than the start of 2000. The last five years have seen this index grow by just 5%, which reflects recent economic and market conditions. This does however, also reinforce the importance of high quality Independent Financial Advice, if you are to select the right asset mix and fund selection to match your risk tolerance.

Keeping you secure Waveley Fire and Security is a South Wales-based company that specialises in the installation of intruder alarms, access control, and fire detection equipment and protection of buildings, assets and the staff and visitors who work in those buildings. Electronic security systems In partnership with our clients we undertake a security audit of your building and produce a detailed report on the best ways of protecting your building and assets from unwanted intrusion. This is a four-layered approach that involves the following:

1. Environmental design: where the property is located has an immediate impact on physical security. Whether it has fences, barriers, vehicle height restriction, site lighting, bars to windows, shutters for doors, mechanical, electronic, and procedural access to site.

2. Control of access to building: gates, doors, locks, electronic access control, identity badges, visitor badges. Key holders policy, proximity readers, etc.

3. Intrusion detection: the installation of alarm systems, considering response procedures, means of transmission of alarm, etc.

4. CCTV or video signal transmission over the internet.

Fire detection In order to offer our clients the best protection against fire, together with protecting their staff, assets, and buildings we prepare a full fire detection audit, outlining and detailing particular points of concern in the fire detection report. We always recommend the installation of a fire detection system that links with our security access system and allows a printout of persons in the building upon the activation of the fire alarm. It is of course important to know who is in the building in the event of fire, particularly with the additional responsibilities under current health and safety regulations.

Services • To undertake security audits and prepare security plans • To protect all entrances and ensure the screening and recording of all guests/ employees • To monitor clients’ premises with video surveillance equipment • To protect clients’ assets, employees and guests • To deter crime with visual security detection presence • To organise response in the case of fire, evacuation, or other emergency • To detect unwanted customers or trespassers

029 2071 3620 Has your business got a succession plan?

You’ve spent your whole working life building up your business, making it the success that you always dreamt of, while always looking for new opportunities to improve it. So what happens now that you’re beginning to look to retirement? For so many business people little thought is given to what happens to an enterprise as retirement approaches. Local girl Sara Plant, founding partner of law firm Peter Lynn and Partners and her commercial team are eager to help ensure that your business enjoys a smooth succession and that you can best realize its assets. Head of commercial law and succession planning specialist Peter Lynn says that many business owners hope that their enterprise will undergo a smooth succession when they retire. All too often, however, little - if any - thought is given to the planning required for this smooth transition. He says: “Like everything in life, planning ahead and getting the best advice will pay off, and will make your succession easier when the time comes.

“It’s important to start planning years in advance of your target retirement date - and the first step is to take professional advice from solicitors and accountants who are experts in such matters. “It’s vital to hold meetings with successors in order to agree an exit strategy and to ensure that there are sufficient funds to buy out retiring partners or to create an agreement to buy back shares over time so that the company’s finances are not put under strain. “This is where expert financial and legal advice can really smooth the process. “Depending on the system used, often businesses are faced with complex tax implications when withdrawing capital and making decisions such as whether to sell or lease back the business premises. “It may be emotionally difficult for founding partners to let go of the business, and at the same time customers and stakeholders need to be confident that the new management regime can fill the gap left after a senior departure.

“It may be one of the oldest maxims in business but ‘If you fail to plan then you plan to fail’.

“If family are involved, business priorities and family ties can often become blurred, so gaining objective professional advice will be a great help to ensure that the business stays focused and all concerned make the most out of the situation.

The expert team at Peter Lynn and Partners has structured multi-million pound exit strategies to ensure a smooth transition and continuity for a business.

“Too many business people expect a simple lump sum at retirement and assume that there’ll be willing buyers when the time comes. Such assumptions can prove extremely costly.

Sara Plant

“Take advice early on so that you and your family can enjoy the rewards of life at the end of that busy career.”

As part of the company’s specialist probate and taxation department, the team plans the best taxation route for individuals and their business, ensuring that assets remain within the family and with the business’s successors.

0845 890 1669 GO REMOTE AND REDUCE YOUR IT MILES Being green is no longer just a business buzzword: it is now a necessity. South Wales based IT service provider Pisys. net has become increasingly aware of how IT is being highlighted as having a high impact on the environment, with many people believing that IT is second to the airline industry in its carbon footprint. “Unfortunately, being ‘green’ has long been associated with additional costs and inconvenience but, if anything, with Pisys.net it is the complete opposite,” says director John Merrick. “In fact becoming greener can actually save you money.” Founded in May 2003, Pisys.net is an IBM and Microsoft Certified Partner which works with small and medium businesses or larger organisations with satellite offices in the South Wales area to provide advice, technology support and maintenance. For some organisations this means serving as an outsourced IT department, providing advice, installing computer systems and performing regular preventive maintenance to ensure the smooth running of their businesses. For others it means complementing the in-house team in a strategic consultancy role to fill skills gaps and provide extra resources as required. “We are keen to promote our remote IT support service as a smart way of

reducing ‘IT miles’, by saving travelling time, energy, carbon waste – and money,” says director Steve Bain. “Pisys. net still offers the more traditional IT support via telephone and on-site visits when requested, but the company’s remote support is now the first choice of every client on its books as companies become increasingly conscious of their green credentials. “Using remote-access technology, our team of engineers can see exactly what you see on your monitor, from our office. Provided you have an Internet connection, we can access and monitor any PC, laptop, server or workstation, enabling us to fix problems without having to involve your staff or visit your office.” However, remote IT support is more than just a phone number to call when problems occur. It is a complete network support solution that utilises many proactive and reactive methods such as anti-virus protection and data backups to ensure businesses get the most out of their IT equipment. “We have invested heavily in an advanced monitoring system which alerts us to any problems before they have a chance to impact on your business. In many cases, we have found that we have resolved issues even before the client has become aware of them,” says Steve. “More than 90 per cent of the questions and issues we deal with are handled remotely, even installations and upgrades. People may worry that a remote service is less personal but this is not the case with us. We ensure that our

service is approachable and efficient by providing your company with a friendly and ‘non-geeky’ team of IT technicians. “Better still, by using remote-access technology, you don’t have to wait for an engineer to attend your site – you can have an immediate response within minutes.” Many small businesses cannot afford the time and resources necessary to fix computer problems themselves and 47 per cent of businesses in Wales now opt for an outsourced IT department. “Pisys.net offers a premier IT support service designed with small to medium businesses in mind,” says John Merrick. “Our specifically tailored advice, consultancy and support are of the highest professional standard and guaranteed to give you some of the advantages usually available only to much larger companies. “We aim to provide our clients with a workable IT system which not only matches their specific criteria but is flexible enough to allow for expansion. Investing in an IT system is less about the product and more about finding the right solution that will really help your business.”

For more information or a free remote demonstration call or email Pisys.net or visit the website.

Cosmeston Lakes: Penarth’s country park

Cosmeston Lakes Country Park offers a fine introduction to the countryside and is open all year round. The park has been designed to enable people of all abilities to discover and enjoy the countryside found near Penarth. Special events take place throughout the year such as jousting, medieval combat, archery, crafts, Hallowe’en events and summer festivals. Cosmeston Lakes Country Park has a variety of habitats covering more than 100 hectares of land and water, some being designated a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) to protect its rare and diverse plant and animal

species. There are many acres of lakes, woodland and country walks to explore and enjoy. The park had its origins with the advent of limestone quarrying in the early 1890s. The quarrying ceased in 1970 and one of the quarry sites was used for landfill. Underground springs flooded parts of the quarried area creating lakes, very deep in some places. The quarry spoil areas were landscaped and together with the lakes they form the main features of the park. The park is adjacent to the previously lost site of Cosmeston Medieval Village. The reconstruction of a small

‘living museum’ 14th century medieval village, discovered on the site during the landscaping of the park, has been described as the best of its kind in the UK.

Cor Cleaning

029 2027 1500

It’s Spring and now there’s no excuse! It’s time for a serious cleanup around the house and garden and Cor Cleaning is here to help. Cor Cleaning is a professional cleaning company with a team of highly trained professionals who specialise in providing exceptional interior and exterior cleaning, including window washing, gutter clearing and pressure washing for drives, patios and paths. Drives often need special attention. “You may pull in and out of your drive two to three times per day. To and from work, to the shops, to the gym, then out for a late night bite. And you have a two- or three-car household,” says Cor Cleaning’s Graham Linnard. “Road dirt, sand, mud, oil grease and more can be brought on to your drive from the car wheels. The messier the roads where you work and live, the worse your drive could get. But, save the hose for the lawn. There is a better method of cleaning your drive: pressure washing. “With a combination of water pressure and degreaser the high pressure water spray removes grease, oil, dirt and tyre spots from surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, paving tiles and cement.

“The high pressure clean takes care of weeds and algae as well, and leaves it looking as good as new,” says Graham.. Add in a gutter clearing and window washing and your home will be as fresh as a daisy. Cor Cleaning carry out work for both the domestic and commercial markets and provide an expert and professional service. No job is too big or too small. Commercial clients range from public houses, nursing homes and offices to shops. “Quality of service is everything” with Cor Cleaning. “We will clean your patios, windows, drives and gutters so they look like new again,” says Graham.

Twenty-eight years of building quality loft conversions and home extensions takes a concrete form for Penarth builder ABC. The company won the Vale of Glamorgan’s 2010 Building Quality Award for Excellence, and won the Federation of Master Builders of Wales award in November 2010. “ABC specialises mainly in loft conversions and extensions but we also do kitchen and bathroom renovations. I have a skilled workforce including carpenters, plasters, plumbers and electricians so I can ensure that every area of the job is done to the highest standard of workmanship, customer service and quality,” says ABC proprietor Alan Grant. “Being a carpenter I’m on the tools myself, and I work on the premises until the job’s finished. We stay on site throughout – and we’re there when we say we’ll be there!” Advanced Building Contractors, to give the company its full name, was established in 1988. Originally a professional shipwright/boat builder, Alan decided to train as a carpenter and joiner and is always a hands-on operator on his customers’ homes.

As well as working on ABC’s awardwinning building projects, Alan has been lending his expertise to the Home TV channel shows featuring Big Brother’s Craig Phillips, Celebrity DIY and If It’s Broke, Fix It, advising the shows’ producers on various health and safety and structural issues. Another new direction for ABC is as the agent of ICB solar panels. “ICB is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of roofing products and systems offering green, sustainable options for all buildings. They are MCS accredited and their products include the latest innovation in photovoltaic solar roofing tiles systems, Evalon®Solar,” says Alan. Ideal for a changeable climate like Wales’s, Evalon®Solar does not need direct sunlight. Instead, it works with diffused light.

A major new TV studio is to be built in Cardiff Bay for production of shows such as Dr Who and Torchwood, and it is designed to have lots of ‘green’ features – hence the ICB solar panels and other specialist fittings. It’s an exciting growth area to be involved with,” says Alan. The ABC team also specialise in expert home maintenance and repairs, so give Alan a call for a free, friendly consultation and advice about any building or maintenance job.

“ICB approached me after hearing about one of our awards and I jumped at the chance to get involved with them.

029 2071 2100 We Need Help! With the 2013 opening looming, please contact the project office if you think you have some time and would like to get involved as a volunteer. There are many areas where help is needed – from supporting the fund raising events coming up to giving presentations, distributing leaflets and doing something in the office.

Where is the Money Coming From? If we are successful the national Heritage Lottery Fund is supporting the renovation and reopening project with around £1.6 million. The Vale of Glamorgan Council owns the building and has kept aside a substantial reserve to contribute once the other monies come in. We will know about our applications with Communities Asset Transfer and CFAP –both are administered by the Welsh Assembly – later in the year.

What’s Inside? There will be extensive work to the Pavilion to give it a more durable exterior using guidelines on carbon reduction and sustainability principles wherever possible. Once finished the Pavilion becomes an exciting community space where we can learn about our local history, see film of wildlife, take part in all year round classes – both formal and part of the leisure learning scene and even hear Sunday afternoon concerts or watch videos made by local filmmakers. On the ground floor there will be a shop, a café with local foods, a central auditorium useful as a learning or performance space. There will be ongoing maritime, history and environmental exhibitions and rooms available for local groups and volunteers to use. On the next floor (connected by walkways) is an auditorium that can be used as a cinema and at the sea end a function area above the

restaurant for conference goers. Our design team have added an all glass 180 degree look out for the volunteer Coastwatch and on the next floor will be offices and services.

Project supporter of the month The Penarth Pavilion web site is currently supported by Core Web Design. Managing Director Ceri Richmond said “having been resident in Penarth for 5 years and recently opening a Penarth office for our business we felt getting involved with the web site was the least we could do to support this exciting and worthwhile project”. David Baker’s Top Tips for Effective Buying / Selling First impression You can only make one first impression and it’s usually formed within 30 seconds. The front of your house is a good place to spend a little extra effort. Plant flowers, trim bushes, weed, pick up leaves, repaint your front door, replace tarnished house numbers. Kerb appeal It’s all very well to have kerb appeal but purchasers must not be put off by the outside of a property, you live inside the house not in the front garden, so go in and view.

The Paddocks

Be clean Your home does not have to sparkle but it must be clean and tidy. Make sure your windows are clean inside and out. Fix it Dripping tap or cracked tile? These will send the wrong message to potential buyers. Eliminate clutter Clutter makes homes seem smaller and disorganised. Clear surfaces, stack magazines, hide toys away and keep the lid on the washing basket. Be neutral Neutral colour schemes convey an atmosphere of calm. If you use styles or colours potential buyers would never select, you might put them off. Depersonalise Remove objects such as political posters and religious items which

may turn off some buyers. You want potential buyers to be able to ‘see’ themselves in the house. Pets away Keep your pets under control and in a specific area. They can be off putting to other people and make sure there are no lingering odours in furniture or flooring. Accessibility Easy access to local shops, schools, public transport and medical practices are a big plus for buyers. Lighting Make sure you have adequate lighting in every room and check all the bulbs work. Accessorise Mirrors reflect light and space. Plants and fresh flowers bring life to rooms so avoid cooking before viewings so there are no unpleasant or strong smells.

the jewellers

New designs made with traditional craftmanship.

Rowley’s the Jewellers is one of Penarth’s oldest businesses, first established in 1963. It’s now run by husband and wife team Cem Aydin and Petra Aydin Barberini, who took over the business in 2004. Cem, who specialises in watch and jewellery repairs and has a passion for renovating classic watches, had been George Rowley’s assistant for five years before taking over after his retirement. Petra, a trained designer and award-winning artist in her own right, introduced contemporary designers and giftware to Rowley’s, alongside the traditional jewellery. Petra and Cem are always striving to find new designs made with traditional craftsmanship. One of their bestselling brands is Clogau – Welsh gold – that combines these two elements beautifully. “Clogau is known as ‘the gold of royalty’ and the Palace has confirmed that Welsh gold will be used for Miss Catherine Middleton’s wedding ring for her marriage to HRH Prince William.” “There is a long tradition of using Welsh gold in Royal wedding rings, beginning with the Queen Mother in 1923. The Queen, Princess Margaret, Princess Diana, Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall have all had wedding rings made from the same precious nugget of rare pure Welsh gold.”

Zoe, Petra and Cem In 1854 the owner of the Clogau copper mine accidentally stumbled across glistening yellow pieces within a piece of waste rock from the mine. It is a touch of this very same rare Welsh gold that is contained in every item of Clogau gold. This rarity has made Clogau gold some of the most sought-after jewellery in the world, hallmarked with a little Welsh dragon. “And there’s a local connection: Penarth jeweller Kate Dumbleton designs some of Clogau’s most popular ranges, Cariad and Am Byth, and the Beachcomber range features silver shells moulded from shells collected from Penarth beach.” More of Kate’s work can be seen at Rowley’s.

have been working with Rowley’s for more than 30 years, specialising in bespoke designing and often using treasured family heirlooms. Anne’s contemporary designs can also incorporate older rings or stones. “As we approach the business’s 50th anniversary we would really like to hear from Penarth families who have been loyal customers for generations.” “We will be mounting an exhibition in September 2013 so there’s plenty of time to gather your memories. We would also like to hear from couples celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 2013. Pop into the shop to leave your details or email us on if you know anyone who would like to share their story.”

Rowley’s stocks a wide selection of Clogau items all with a touch of the famous rose-coloured Welsh gold. The full Clogau range can be viewed at

Beautiful food made with care, knowledge and the expertise gained from years of experience is something we can enjoy every day now that Florentines Patisserie and Delicatessen has opened on Glebe Street. With the emphasis on quality, and with many of the products made on the premises, Florentines offers a full range of patisserie, a carefully chosen delicatessen counter and a tempting menu of dishes to eat in the coffee shop/cafe. Owners Chris Voakes and Jan Howells opened Florentines in November last year, bringing Jan’s many years in the food industry and Chris’s love of cooking together in the business. “Our patisserie selection is huge, from coffee and walnut cake, Victoria sponge, Bakewell tarts, brownies, pies and croissants to a range of diabetic and gluten free treats, all made by Jan,” says Chris.

“Customers love our ornate decorated cup cakes and celebration cakes, and cakey pops – cake on a lollipop stick – are favourites with children.” Over in the deli section, Chris has sourced a range of exclusive Welsh cheeses, some very fine prosciutto, salamis, olive oil and other cooking ingredients to accompany his own home-cured ham and salt beef. “I cure and bake the ham on the premises,” Chris explains. “We also have plans to expand into our own smokery for meat and cheeses. Opening a smokery is just a part of Chris and Jan’s plans for Florentines. “We also hope to develop the coffee shop, with extra seating in the garden. Our current menu features freshly cooked homemade dishes such as Bubble and Squeak with a free-range poached egg on top, curries, lasagna and much more, all accompanied by a choice of six coffees and more than 20 teas plus cereal drinks such as Ovaltine and Horlicks.”

Call in and sample the truly delicious patisserie and delicatessen at Florentines, open 9 to 5 Monday to Saturday, and open for Sunday lunch every other weekend.

Life at the top Victoria Primary School WE AS YEAR SIX have been involved in many different activities, like fund raising for our partner school, TY Academy in Lesotho. The School Council had organised a disco which had raised £650. There were many different stalls which included tattoos, sweets and drinks. In the run-up to the fun day, many children tried to raise as much money as they could by selling things on the playground. Year 4’s did “Name the Rabbit” 20p a go. All the names were gone in a few days. Many of the Year 6’s contributed by making scoobies and they were a huge success. There was also a magazine which was made and sold by three Year 6’s. They had printed over 100 copies and all of them were sold within a week. We Year 6’s have many responsibilities. At the start of each year, each class nominates two people (one boy and one girl) to be their class representative for school council. If a person would like to become a school council member they have to put together a short speech about why they think they’d be a good representative. Only Year 6’s have the chance to become a monitor. Depending on which monitor you are depends on your responsibilities. For example if you are a wet play monitor you are in charge of a class when it is raining outside and the children need to play inside.

36

Every one of us has some kind of monitoring job, whether it is being a stair monitor or showing new parents around our school. We also read with the infants once a week for half an hour. Every year the year 6’s go away for a week to PGL in Tregoyed. We went a couple of weeks ago and what a week it was! We did many different activities such as; canoeing (where one of our teacher capsized!!), abseiling, the trapeze, and loads more!!! However, some of the year 6’s didn’t go but they had a funpacked week too!! They went bowling, swimming, baked cakes in school and lots more!!! At the start of our Victorian topic a lady came to show us what it was like to work in the big house in the 19th century. She showed us artefacts of the items that the people would have used when they were working in the big house. We also went on a school trip to Big Pit.

We went down into the mine and we experienced many new things. We also found out that darkness underground was very different to darkness on the surface, when we turned our head lamps off! One of our teachers dressed up as a Victorian school teacher and she was far more strict than usual!!! We found out that if you said something in Welsh, you would have to wear the “Welsh Not” which was very uncomfortable! A few Years 5&6’s recently went to represent our school in a book competition. Our teachers chose two books for us to read. We had to discuss one book and do a presentation on the other. We were going against five other schools, who all did very well. In the end, WE WON!!!! We will now go forward to the national round, representing the Vale of Glamorgan!

SCHOOL VIEW Sully Primary School “Sully Primary School has been busy introducing ‘The Big Write’ into its classrooms. Teachers have undergone training in this initiative aimed at developing pupils writing skills. Amongst other practices the scheme sees pupils undertaking a weekly ‘Big Write’ session where they write for a specified period of time on particular topics and themes. Pupils reading development is still paramount and we continue to promote reading alongside community links with our weekly guided reading sessions. Volunteers from the local community come into school and guide groups and individuals with their reading. This practice not only assists with the development of reading it affords the children the opportunity to listen and converse with the wise and knowledgeable minds of the elderly. Our volunteers really enjoy their time spent with the children and feel a sense of achievement watching them develop and mature.

Japan Earthquake cake sale Bute Primary School Children at Bute Cottage Nursery raised £200 for Japan with their cake sale.

This term our charitable efforts have focused on Marie Curie Cancer Care and Red Nose Day. Red Nose Day saw the entire school population dressing up in ‘something funny for money’ with pupils taking part in a comedy show. A total of £550.87 was collected. Sully’s cycle lanes are about to get busier too with Year 6’s successful completion of their Cycling Proficiency Test. The test involves roadwork to ensure each child passes with a good degree of road knowledge and confidence.”

029 2070 5705 academic excellence for the modern world

Westbourne School on Hickman Road in Penarth has come a long way since it was founded in 1896 as a preparatory school. The school has been offering the GCSE courses since the 1980s but in 2008 introduced a sixth form teaching only the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme – the rigorous and highly acclaimed ‘gold standard’ in education. The International Baccalaureate was founded in Switzerland in 1968 as a non-profit educational foundation. A group of talented, progressive teachers at the International School of Geneva, with assistance from several other international schools, created the IB Diploma Programme.

“The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. …These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.”

Although the first IB schools were mainly international schools, they included a very small number of national institutions. This has changed over the years and today 3186 schools in 140 countries offer the IB programme with 222 being in the UK. Maintaining the aspirations and dreams of the founding members, the International Baccalaureate Organisation’s mission statement reads:

Students choose 6 academic subjects from a number of subject areas providing a breadth of knowledge which enables students to maintain and develop a range of key skills. This flexibility is highly valued by employers who are crying out for versatile, mobile graduates. These subjects surround a compulsory core comprising 3 elements: Theory of Knowledge – a course designed to encourage each student to reflect on the nature of knowledge by critically examining different ways of knowing and different kinds of knowledge. The Extended Essay – a 4000 word piece of original research, highly rated by universities providing a one-of-akind introduction to academic writing.

Lauded by the national press and respected by universities both in the UK and abroad, the IB provides a rigorous alternative at a time when more traditional examinations are being criticised for declining standards and outdated learning approaches. This year, Westbourne’s IB Diploma graduates will face their exams in May as they work towards achieving their required grades. Students have offers from many highly ranked universities: Oxford, Warwick, Bristol, Bath and many more for subjects ranging from astrophysics to French and linguistics.

If you would like to know more about the IB programme at Westbourne or the scholarship opportunities available to complete the diploma, please contact the Director of IB, Amy Lee at amylee@westbourneschool.com or visit our website: www.westbourneschool.com

Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) requires that students actively learn from the experience of doing real tasks beyond the classroom engaging with the community and taking responsibility for making a difference.

Business is brisk at Alley Cat Ink, Penarth’s newly opened tattoo studio, run by husband and wife team Justin and Christina Witney. “The shop has been getting busier and busier week by week as people are learning where we are,” says Justin. “We also have a new face around the shop: Lorna Sylvester, who is going to be helping out around the shop on weekdays and then in September she will be taking a full apprentice position.” Lorna’s training will involve all the essential hygiene issues and how to run a business as well as the technical side of creating a tattoo. Justin has also invested in some new equipment: a new tattoo machine which, he says, means faster and slightly less painful tattooing. A new tattoo will also heal more quickly. “In March I tattooed a red nose on to Mark Quick’s bottom in aid of Red Nose day, which managed to raise over £600.”

Developments in tattoo pigments and the refinement of the equipment used for tattooing have led to an improvement in the quality of tattoos being produced, but there are still myths around which need to be dispelled, says Justin. “It is against the law for us to tattoo anybody under the age of 18, no matter what they or their parents may say.”

Come in for a chat Justin and Christina welcome people to call in with any enquiries about a tattoo. “We’re a very open and easygoing shop, so please come in and talk to us about your ideas. There are no egos here.

All You Can Ink! Alley Cat Ink is extending its popular “All You Can Ink!” offer. Daytime Tuesdays and Wednesdays, pay for 3 hours of tattooing and we’ll work as long as you can take it. Conditions apply.

Call Alley Cat Ink for full details.

“My work is artistically based and my approach is to offer customers the most creative and best quality tattoos for them,” says Justin. “Rather than simply selecting a design from a chart on the wall or a book my clients can bring their ideas to me and we will work up the design for their tattoo together. That way I can advise people on the best options for them, in terms of the design and where they want to put it, and how to care for it afterwards so it lasts.”

029 2022 0380 A1 DIAGNOSTICS & ECU REPAIRS

Car care with a difference

Choosing a business to maintain and repair your precious car can be a challenge. There are so many garages and mechanics out there, ranging from one-man outfits to the big chains (with their equally big advertising budgets). Rishi Patel at A1-Diagnostics & ECU Repairs offers a blend of highly trained mechanics, personal service, fair prices and honest, straight talking as the reason to choose them. “We believe in the culture of a quality service and we ensure this by investing in high quality professionals and specialist training,” says Rishi. “A1 -Diagnostics & ECU Repairs is a Bosch Car Service garage which provides vehicle maintenance, repairs and dealer level diagnostics for all makes and models of vehicles, specialising in the prestige German, Continental and Japanese marques. We guarantee a first class service at an affordable price.” The technicians at A1-Diagnostics & ECU Repairs are trained on the latest technologies and have the most upto-date diagnostic equipment to repair, code, retrofit and diagnose faults in all late model cars and vans as quickly and accurately as possible. Any parts that need to be replaced will be Bosch products or parts of the same quality as those that were originally fitted on your vehicle. It’s not just technical expertise that makes the difference, however. “We are different from the quick inand-out type of garage. We have a fixed price policy, with no hidden charges. What we quote is what you’ll pay.

“Also we understand that many drivers have limited technical knowledge, which is not surprising when you consider how complex today’s vehicles are. “The relationship between us and the customer has to be one of trust and we take pride in our open and honest communication. We want to take the fear factor out of a visit to the mechanic! “We will explain everything without jargon to make sure customers understand what we are doing and how much it will cost,” Rishi explains. Being a Bosch garage is a guarantee of quality after all, the Bosch slogan is ‘That’s why 99% of our customers would come back’ – and A1-Diagnostics & ECU Repairs works to an OFTApproved Consumer Code of Practice.

“Take MOTs for example. We offer an MOT without gimmicks,” says Rishi. “We won’t charge a low fee and then fail your car or van so you end up with a big bill for fixing it. Safety is the key element and the cost has to be affordable, for example £40 for a car and £45 for a van. “We can pick up and deliver your car or van from and to home or work, and appointments are made to suit customers’ busy timetables.”

Buy better: Make sure you look for the OFT-Approved code logo

This commitment to customer care gives you peace of mind in knowing that you are going to be given not only the best technical service, but also the best customer service. The OFT-Approved code logo means that the business is operating under a trade body that has an approved code of practice – providing you with high standards of customer service and ensuring your rights as a consumer are better protected.
