Penarth View Cover Photograph Fireworks over Penarth Pier Cover Photograph Penarth View Issue 05 Steve Castle took the exceptional cover photograph of Fireworks over Penarth Pier on Saturday 9th July 2011 during this year’s Penarth Festival week organised by Penarth Town Council. Steve answered my request through Twitter to see if someone could capture the image I wanted for the next Penarth View. As you can see the result is tremendous. Steve Castle
His passion for photography is outside of the norm! He has converted one camera to shoot entirely in infrared, which creates interesting effects in strong sunlight. His other interest is in long exposure photography, capturing faint light over a long period – this is the technique he used to capture the fireworks over Penarth Pier. He loves to shoot at night, capturing star trails and full moon lit landscapes. Steve is a keen cyclist and rides to work each day in Llandaff! Last year with a work colleague Steve won a film competition for charity Sustrans to create a film about the national cycle network. The film was made up of more than 6000 stills, which you can see on Youtube by typing in ‘My Cycle Network’.

ESTATE AGENTS 029 20 41 51 61 traditional values, modern methods ACJ Properties is an independent estate and letting agent which was established in 1993. Unlike many other estate agents, ACJ started their business in lettings and then diversified into sales. Due to the two disciplines being very different it was necessary to recruit a specialist team to focus solely on sales. Based in their prominent double-fronted Victoria Road offices a total team of 12 staff are available to respond personally to telephone calls and office visits. “In the same way that lettings was established, our sales team aim to offer our customers a service that is better than, and different from, the competition,” says Tony Jones, director at ACJ. Four principal aspects highlight ACJ’s approach.
Free (unconditional) Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) ACJ employs its own domestic energy assessor, so they can organise the legally necessary EPC and start marketing your property immediately.

Immediate feedback after viewings Vendors want to be kept fully informed about how buyers are regarding their property. ACJ gives feedback straight after a viewing as part of its commitment to efficiency and conscientious progress-chasing. ACJ Properties offers free, noobligation market appraisals from an experienced team who are helpful, have a wealth of expert local knowledge and provide professional advice. Once the company has started to market your property it will immediately use its bespoke computer software to match it with over 700 registered buyers on their mailing list. Tony is upbeat about a positive outlook for the Penarth property market. “Penarth has so much to offer. It’s just a few minutes’ drive to the centre of a capital city, it’s next to the sea with its beautiful coastline and has great schools and many classic Edwardian and Victorian properties,” he says. The key to ACJ’s service is to research fully a property’s value, comprehensively advertise it and maintain regular contact with clients to achieve the best price within an agreed timescale.
Floor plans provide a great deal of useful information for buyers. ACJ uses a computer-based CAD system to produce superior floor plans for every property.
Listings on all property portals ACJ are with all the relevant property portals and make a substantial investment in ensuring that their own website has the best possible visibility on the various search engines. This includes the free option of a ‘Premium listing’ on Rightmove and ‘Featured property’ on ACJ’s website.

Look after your most precious asset – you – at John Bruno Total Training. John Bruno is celebrating a significant milestone: it’s the 20th anniversary of his setting up in business as a personal trainer. The field of personal training was in its infancy when John’s passion for health and fitness started, so he has seen many changes over the years. “There were only 100 personal trainers in the UK when I started. I was a 24-year-old with a weightlifting qualification and I wanted to pursue my dream, so I set out, just me in a van with a skipping rope,” John recalls. “I travelled to wherever the work was and gradually built my clientele until I opened my first studio in 2000. “The business grew and developed considerably over the years and we moved to the current 2500sq ft Fitness and Health Studio in Glebe Street in 2008.
“It’s not a gym in the conventional sense – there’s no membership. What we offer is a collaborative holistic service with a team of 17 experienced trainers and therapists who provide clients with what they need to achieve their health and fitness goals,” he says. “Clients choose the elements they want on an individual basis, combining training and therapy as required. We offer Pilates, Nordic walking, yoga, physiotherapy, McTimoney chiropractic, sports massage, cycling-coach, runningcoach, triathlon-coach, nutrition, reflexology, aromatherapy, reiki, Indian head massage, hypnotherapy, hot stone massage, life coaching, style and image coaching, success coaching and pre and post-pregnancy massage.” John Bruno’s clients are a mix of individuals (some of whom have trained with him for many years), businesses and athletes who are pursuing all aspects of fitness and health. The Studios are designed for Pilates, yoga and private personal fitness training. The various therapists see their clients in smaller private rooms on the premises. “The combined services provided by our team of experienced therapists and trainers enable clients to achieve the wellness and fitness they need to live long and stay healthy, whatever their goals,” says John.

A new way to train: via Skype! John has introduced Skype Personal Training, the virtual way to exercise in the comfort of your own home, in the office or anywhere in the world. “Skype Personal Training is a one-to-one or small group video call where we train you over a web camera,” John explains. After a free initial consultation and secure payment via Paypal (five 30-minute sessions cost £125) John arranges a suitable time for your five bespoke sessions and your Personal PDF exercise routine is mailed to you. “You need a fast Internet connection on a computer with a webcam or an iPhone, iPad or other smart phone. Your bespoke session will be 30 minutes of teaching and training, plus how to warm up and cool down before and after your session. Exercises are taught with good technique and form to give you the best possible results.” Email John to arrange your free consultation.

Lydia Hall Professional golfer Lydia says: I first met and trained with John 10 years ago at the very start of my golfing years, when we worked together on a few NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) skills. I have been working with John intensively for the last 10 months and feel I have become physically and mentally stronger as a person and as a professional golfer. John has been a big part of my success this season and at the Dubai Ladies Masters in December 2010, where we had a 10-week plan in place in preparation for the event. I love working with him and his team and I’m looking forward to the hard work he has in store for me this coming winter in preparation for the 2012 Ladies European Tour.
Lyndon Smith LDS Motor Factors
Sara Robinson Managing director, Cake Communications
Lyndon says: I have been training with John for 20 years. I originally started with John way back in 1991. I was very overweight and being self-employed I was very busy, did no exercise and drank and ate all the wrong things. After training with John for six months the weight I had lost was incredible!
Sara says: I have seen such a change in myself since working with John and Tanya Bruno. As a busy working mother, I found it hard to make time for exercise and was put off by the ‘pile ‘em high’ attitude of big gyms. I found the truly personal service I was looking for with John and Tanya.
John motivated and trained me and also showed me the right things to eat. My fitness level rose to a very high standard and I am still training with John. At 44 years of age I am fitter and healthier than ever before.
From the first session, where we talked goals and exercise preferences and target areas, I have felt supported. Every session with John and Tanya – an excellent motivator who always has a smile on her face – is different so there’s no chance of getting bored. I feel I have come a long way quickly. They are excellent at designing routines that you can do easily at home. Also, the lighting in the studio is great and you can take your own iPod along. There is nothing not to love about John Bruno Total Training – I just wish I’d found it years ago!

Portraits are a wonderful way to mark any special occasion, for example to celebrate a significant wedding anniversary or birthday.” Sheridan offers a full and affordable personal service, from photo to framing. A recent commission for Sheridan was to paint Johnny Robinson (above), the winner of the Penarth View art competition, of which she was one of the judges, in the last issue of the magazine. Johnny’s picture of Penarth in Summer appeared on the front cover.

north meets south 029 2070 8157 There is a delicious new look to the menu at North Meets South café, perfect for a relaxing brunch or midday meal. After two years at the busy North Meets South café, chefs/owners Tony and Anna Slater are giving their menu a revamp. “All the favourite sandwiches, wraps and jackets are still there but we are introducing some new hot dishes which we hope customers will enjoy for a leisurely meal,” says Tony. “New to the menu will be classics such as Fish & Chips and Beef Stroganoff plus some dishes to which we’ll add a North Meets South twist. For example we’ll have Hunter’s Chicken, which is a chicken breast with Monterey Jack cheese wrapped in smoked bacon, and a range of open pies with a puff pastry lid which we hope customers will love.” Well known for its takeaway sandwiches, paninis and rolls, North Meets South, which is open from 8am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, has become a favourite spot for breakfasts, hot lunches and afternoon teas, with tables available outside as well as in the cosy café which is at the top of the Windsor Arcade. North Meets South also has newspapers to read, a licence for beer and wine, a fantastic selection of French patisserie made for Anna and Tony by a local patissier, and Fairtrade tea, coffee, hot chocolate, sugar and biscuits for sale. Since taking over the business two years ago the couple, who have three children themselves, have invested in a new kitchen and renovated the toilets and baby changing room to make it more comfortable for customers.
Drop in and enjoy the warm welcome, and the new dishes, at North Meets South.

Speaking in an interview with Wales Online at the shop’s opening in early August, Stephen praised Tŷ Hafan for providing “so much support for the families, towards allowing the children to develop healthily and to have a good life”.
Among proud members of the Penarth community waiting for the shop’s opening was Cardiff City football player Stephen McPhail. Cutting the ribbon to the Stanwell Road shop with Stephen McPhail were Amy Huggett and her son Finley. Stephen has frequently visited Finley, a two-year-old who has unfortunately spent time in neonatal intensive care after a serious bowel operation on the second day of his life, followed by an operation on a hernia. Since being made aware of Finley’s exceptional condition, Stephen has related to the pain he has endured. Stephen himself has suffered from diseases including Sjögren’s syndrome and Raynaud’s phenomenon, which makes it highly appropriate for him to be involved with a charity such as Tŷ Hafan.
Tŷ Hafan is a non-profit making charity organisation which was started up to provide a free charitable service to families and young people who suffer from a wide range of disabilities. Since the opening of the hospice in Sully 12 years ago, Tŷ Hafan’s goal has been to provide care and support to life-limited families from all parts of South and West Wales. Through their attentive and charitable efforts, Tŷ Hafan has helped to enrich the quality of life for those whose lives are tragically cut short through incurable diseases.
established community. Competitive prices on the items donated to the Tŷ Hafan shop (including clothes, CDs and DVDs) will show customers in Penarth “the pride we have in quality”, as Alan Drury states. It is this approach to charging the best possible prices that will allow for a healthy and sustainable level of funding. For Tŷ Hafan, this means being able to create more opportunities and experiences for young children involved with the charity, which currently range from mothers’ groups to days out and pamper days.
Disabilities which Tŷ Hafan supports include rare genetic disorders, cystic fibrosis and progressive neurological conditions. Originally serving primarily the South Wales region, Tŷ Hafan has reached out to wider areas of Wales, through visiting homes, other hospices and hospital wards on a regular basis. The hospice in Sully has provided much help and care to those around the area and has also helped people based in the Cardiff area and further throughout Wales. By having the shop among the many other charity outlets in Penarth, including Oxfam and the PDSA, Tŷ Hafan will stand out to the already

Justin Horton, the Tŷ Hafan retail manager, believes the shop in Penarth will enable the charity to “share our mission to support young people and their families from all parts of South and West Wales”. What Tŷ Hafan’s mission has achieved so far is very commendable. After 12 years of serving the Welsh community, Tŷ Hafan has been rated as the number one recognised charity in Wales, and has also become the biggest hospice lottery in the UK. Leading up to the opening of the shop, the community in Penarth showed an overwhelming amount of interest in the opportunities for work experience and volunteering. Thirty-five people have already come forward to offer their services, a promising indication of what the future holds for the charity in Penarth. Being such a community-based and coordinated charity group, there is no doubt that Tŷ Hafan will prosper in Penarth. Under the shop management of Angela Church, the clear drive and determination shown by her and the charity group is nothing short of true quality. Unquestionably the warm and profound welcome given to Tŷ Hafan demonstrated the community’s approval of a commendable service, and that it is the number one charity of the people in Penarth.
Tŷ Hafan would once again like to thank the members of the public, and to say how delighted they are now to be part of Penarth, where they have wanted to be for a long time! The Tŷ Hafan shop is open Monday to Saturday, 9 to 5, and the telephone number is 029 2070 3665 Please support the boy mentioned in this article, Finley, by making a charitable donation on this link: www.justgiving.com/Amy-Huggett

“Our newly equipped consultation and treatment rooms allow us to conduct a full range of medical and health care services in the peace and quiet of dedicated, purpose-built facilities where patients can relax and talk in confidence with the pharmacist or other specialists,” says Jane. “Whether you require a ’flu vaccination, health, travel and lifestyle advice, or tests for blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes, we can put your mind at rest and in private. We are able to enter all your results into a specialist computer programme to provide you with a heart and stroke risk assessment. By altering factors such as weight and lifestyle, we can show how your risk will change. “We can also review your medicines and answer any questions that you may have about your prescriptions, to make sure that the medicines prescribed are helping you in the best possible way, and without side-effects,” says Jane.
Washington Pharmacy stocks a wide range of medicines and health care products. “If you are looking to buy a present for someone at any time of year, we have the perfect gift for you from our wide range of cosmetics and toiletries with brands including Rimmel, Crabtree & Evelyn, Apicare, Vichy and La RochePosay skin care, Roger & Gallet, Bronnley, Yardley and Nougat toiletries and Mason Pearson hair brushes,” says Jane. “Coming up for Christmas we will have an extensive selection of top designer perfume and aftershave gift sets which we will gift wrap for you.” “Whether you are an existing customer returning or a new customer keen to see what we can offer, you are most welcome. “We are members of the Shop in Penarth (SiP) Loyalty Card Scheme and we encourage people to support local independent shops like us,” says Jane.
“Repeat dispensing, which allows you to collect repeat prescriptions from us without having to order the prescription from the surgery each time, is also available, as are allergy screening and confidential emergency contraception advice. “And we plan to offer a range of treatments such as chiropody, Indian head massage, reflexology, physiotherapy and counselling services in our newly equipped therapy room.”

Five Star Chef Five star catering for Cardiff & South Wales Why did you open a shop in Penarth? We opened the retail side of the business by accident! Last Christmas we found ourselves snowed in and unable to get to our events, and my partner took pity on a humble chef and offered us a corner of her shop in Glebe Street. What has your first year in retail been like? I am a chef first and foremost, I love to prepare great food and see people enjoying the end result. Our first year in retail has been a steep learning curve, we’ve produced some great dishes and have a regular base of customers who enjoy our freshly made Ready Meals. What is the store’s most popular dish? Our customers seem to love our traditional dishes such as Cottage Pies, Beef or Vegetarian Lasagnes, Fishcakes and Bread and Butter Puddings. I guess the classics are still the best! What kind of events does Five Star Chef cater for? The shop’s been great for introducing customers to our food and to the events catering side of our business.
Over the past few weeks we’ve catered for weddings and parties in castles, marquees in farmers’ fields and lighthouses, for between 25 and 250 guests. What has been your favourite event this year?
We’re looking forward to serving amazing food and drinks at weddings and private parties over the coming months. Talk to us about your event needs for Christmas and New Year, we guarantee to dazzle!
Every event is different: from a Thai-themed private garden party for 30 people to a five-course wedding breakfast in the middle of nowhere for 250 people our team just loves the challenge. In this job every event truly is different and we love them all, even the ones in the rain! What have you got planned for the rest of the year? Christmas will be a busy period for the events side of the business, we’re now taking bookings for private parties with between 20 and 300 guests. We aim to provide our customers with something very special this Christmas! What’s next for you and your team? We’re really excited about the events side of our business and we are already taking bookings for 2012. We’ve just introduced a fully licensed and stocked mobile Ice bar that’s available for all events.

100% Bespoke Jewellery In recent months Northern Star Bespoke Jewellery’s craftsman Matt Mullooly has created some beautiful engagement rings for local couples. When designing and making engagement and wedding rings Matt uses his skill and experience to incorporate the client’s own styles and preferences to create a truly bespoke piece of jewellery. Matt explained his design philosophy to Penarth View.
How do you approach the design of an engagement ring? An engagement ring is a one-off item with a great deal of sentimental value for any couple. For that reason I think the ring should also be a one-off design. A ring designed and made at Northern Star will never be reproduced and so it remains unique to that couple.
Examples of engagement rings designed at Northern Star Bespoke Jewellery.
What makes you different as a jewellery designer?
Personal service must mean a lot to you?
I think there are a number of reasons Northern Star is a success, one of which is that I strive to provide people with exactly what they want. I listen to customers’ ideas and work with them, showing them a range of diamonds and metals that fit into their budget and advising them which is best suited to their needs.
I always share my knowledge with customers and show them what is involved in every process of making a piece. I think they appreciate being able to understand what I do and to discuss the details with the person who is making their special ring.
Does that personalised and bespoke approach cost more? The cost of having a bespoke ring made at Northern Star would actually work out slightly less than buying a ring off the shelf in a high street store. It seems that people have really taken to the idea of having something completely personal created and as a bonus they enjoy being involved in the design process. Specialist Gem Setter Matthew Mullooly.

From a simple promotional pen to a full set of branded clothing, DeVine Personalised Gifts has the right product at the right price, plus the marketing expertise to help you choose the most effective one for your business. A successful business does several things right: offering a service or product that people want, consistently and at the right price, and building a loyal customer base. These days, as any company owner knows, marketing the product or business is a complicated affair, and knowing what increases your product awareness or customer loyalty can make a huge difference to whether the business grows or stagnates. A branded gift for clients or customers will certainly get you noticed, but what kind of thing will give you the most bang for your buck? There’s such a lot to choose from: wine, clothing, diaries, mugs, executive toys, pens, items made from recycled materials, even seeds and trees. This is where the marketing experience and brand awareness knowledge of DeVine Personalised Gifts comes in. “We offer a huge range, but we know which branded gifts work best, which ones are kept for the longest time *, and which cement the company’s identity in the customer’s mind most strongly,” says DeVine’s managing director Stan Devonish. For example, a branded USB stick is a popular promotional gift item, but the capacity of the memory is crucial to whether the client keeps and uses it or hands it straight to the children. It might be slightly cheaper to order ones with a meagre 250MB of memory but for a few pence more you can have a much more usable 1GB capacity, meaning your company brand will be constantly reinforced with your clients and prospective clients.
“Potential longevity or an extra marketing angle that makes you stand out from the crowd is also important,” says Stan. “One client gives his customers a personalised Norwegian spruce sapling (a Christmas tree to you and me). His clients nurture their trees either in pots, bringing them in every Christmas, or planting them straight in the garden, and every year they run a ‘Tallest’ and ‘Best Dressed’ competition which makes sure there’s great two-way communication with all the customers year after year. DeVine also supplies personalised Christmas baubles,” he adds.
“We pride ourselves on providing excellent customer service. DeVine’s satisfied customers includes Sony, Admiral, Acorn Recruitment, Go Compare, Lord’s Cricket Club, Lloyds TSB, KPMG Wales, Mitsubishi, Real Radio, the Western Mail Business in Wales Awards, Town & Country Hotels, the Caerphilly Business Forum and Call of the Wild and we are an accredited member of the British Promotional Merchandise Association (BPMA).” * Bags (not plastic) are retained for the longest time, with pens being the most popular, says Stan.
“We help you to find the products you require. Whether you are looking for a light-weight, cost effective mail-out to your prospects, branded golfing merchandising and trophies for your big corporate golf day or awards for staff recognition, we can provide the promotional merchandising to help you achieve your desired results. “Browse our website where you can download a catalogue or even better give us a call as we’d love to hear about your marketing plans to see how we can assist and add value. We can source products from around the world so we can offer you the best products at the best prices,” says Stan.

Whether it’s to compete in the Special Olympics, or to have drumming lessons, or to work with an artist for a day, Follow Your Dreams raises funds to support youngsters with additional needs to realise their potential through music, art, sport and drama. Follow Your Dreams helps make ‘Dreams’ come true for youngsters with autism, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome and other additional needs. The Catch The Dream campaign, which incorporates Britain’s Got Special Talent, takes place at free events staged at large shopping centres and special schools all over the UK. Follow Your Dreams was set up more than 10 years ago after a chance meeting between the charity’s founder, Martin Harris, and special olympian Greg Silvester who was working in a factory. After Martin set up Follow Your Dreams, Greg is now a sports coach in a mainstream school. This pretty much outlines what Follow Your Dreams is about!
“Ashgrove School in Penarth enjoyed coming to our Catch The Dream event in St David’s Centre. We have already made lots of their Dreams come true and would like to work in partnership with the local community and businesses to fulfil all the others.
“In 2007 we sponsored 44 athletes whose Dream it was to compete in the World Special Olympic Games in Shanghai. Since then we have been able to help hundreds of youngsters to follow their dreams,” says Sue, who lives in Penarth.
“As part of the Catch The Dream campaign we hold fun workshops to encourage children to think about their aspirations and wishes for the future,” says Follow Your Dreams CEO Sue Sugarman.
“While at the Catch The Dream event the youngsters also have a chance to take part in our Britain’s Got Special Talent showcase, enabling them to show off their talents, building confidence and self-esteem.”
“Before the event we contact the local special needs schools and groups to invite them to participate in workshops. Each child is given a ‘Dream Catcher’ to prepare that they attach to a huge Dream Catcher at the event so we can then plan to make each one of them come true.”
Based in Talbot Green, Follow Your Dreams is now a national charity, with teams all over the UK. The funds raised are also used to help youngsters by buying them specialist equipment such as bikes or PC hardware that are adapted using fibreoptic and sensory equipment.
“All of us here get involved with the Dreams, which makes all the hard work worthwhile. If anyone sponsors a Dream they too can see where their money is being spent. Each event is quite costly and the charity hasn’t received any Government or lottery funding.

ANCIENT HEALTH CARE FOR MODERN ILLS More and more people all over the world are turning to alternative or complementary ways of caring for their health. Gwenan Evans offers traditional acupuncture treatment, right on your doorstep here in Penarth.
Fel rhywun sy’n gwbl ddwyieithog, mae Gwenan yn gwybod yn iawn gymaint haws yw hi’n gallu bod i dderbyn gofal iechyd yn eich mamiaith.
Acupuncture was originally developed in the Orient and has been used in many Eastern cultures for thousands of years, to restore and maintain good health. It is now accepted all over the world as a valid system of medicine. In the UK, there are more than 3,000 qualified acupuncturists registered with the British Acupuncture Council. “Many people come for acupuncture for help with specific conditions or symptoms, which can range from lower back pain to migraine,” says Gwenan. “Others come because they want to increase their overall energy levels, or to improve their sense of wellbeing.” Acupuncture can be of particular help to people during times of change or stress such as the menopause or pregnancy, bereavement or even changing jobs. As a gentle holistic treatment, it is suitable for all ages, including babies and children, and can be safely used alongside conventional medicine. Gwenan is a graduate of the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading, UK, and holds a Licentiate in Acupuncture. She is a Member of the British Acupuncture Council. She is also a qualified tai chi instructor and fully bilingual in Welsh and English.
“My interest in acupuncture arose following my first trip to China in 1999, where I also came across tai chi,” says Gwenan. “I started having acupuncture myself to help with various ailments including tennis elbow and urticaria, and was so impressed with the positive effects on my general health and energy levels that I decided to train to be a Chinese medicine practitioner! “I now practise acupuncture and other Chinese medicine techniques in my clinic at Plymouth Road in Penarth and also at The Acupuncture Centre in Mumbles, Swansea, and feel very privileged to be able to help people achieve their full potential on a physical, mental and emotional level through traditional acupuncture.”
“Mae sefydlu perthynas gysurus rhwng y darparwr gofal iechyd a’r cleient yn holl-bwysig, yn fwy felly o bosib gyda thriniaethau amgen,” meddai, “ac mae dewis iaith yn ran sylfaenol iawn o sefydlu perthynas. What is acupuncture? Acupuncturists use subtle diagnostic techniques that focus on the individual, as well as the symptoms. By inserting ultra-fine sterile needles into specific points, a traditional acupuncturist seeks to re-establish the free flow of qi, or vital energy, to restore the body’s equilibrium and trigger the natural healing response.
For more information or to make an appointment, contact Gwenan by phone or email.

Dear Reader It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over and it’s not been a great one at that. However, from a fashion retail point of view I am already buying for Summer 2012! And Autumn/ Winter 2011 is arriving at Ginger’s at quite a pace.
Choker from Lotus Feet So, what can we expect for autumn? Well, there is a lot of lovely colours such as damson, corals, royal blues, pinks and purples to name a few, in the key shapes which consist of cowl necks, polo necks, high Vs and round necks. In trousers we have basic colours such as black and grey with, at last, a bit more navy. Camel is strong too, with skirts and trousers already in stock – combine camel with chocolate and black and you have a very good look. Viz-a-Vie has a lovely ‘story’ offering grey/black and brown/black combinations with an assortment of tops and skirts which can be mixed and matched. We also have a fabulous range by Zele in cotton, wool, flax and linen which are quirky and very flattering. Intown, Brandtex and Miss Baron offer a great selection of affordable and smart everyday coordinates.
has some fabulous capes, hats and gloves – I will even have fur hats in case we have a winter like last year!
Fashion fundraiser I have been asked to put on a fashion show fundraiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care, on 12 October in the Parish Hall, Dinas Powys. Tickets are £5 and available from the Committee members or in the shop. I have a new website: www.gingersofpenarth.co.uk, so please take a look. I look forward to welcoming you into my Aladdin’s cave, do come along and check out what’s new. Kind regards Cathy
Other names will be arriving soon: Adini with their fabulous boiled wool jackets and smart dresses, Chianti for something a little dressier, Emreco and Poppy, very established names in the town, Pomodorro and finally Steilmann, well known for their jackets. Sahara, one of my ethical/Fairtrade companies, continues to be super with some beautifully cut dresses and tunics. I am expanding my already wide range of jewellery and accessories. Mint and Dante continue to offer great value and will enhance any outfit. New jewellery will be in shortly from Strata, U-Kwenza and Topazglow. Scarves are huge once again and Pia Rossina

02920 350 032 07877 032 786 Forget the cowboy outfits and country and western music: come and join the fun at an innovative Nuline dance class with well known Penarth instructor Ruth Brown. Mention line dancing and you’ll probably immediately think of cowgirl gear and country music. But that’s all changed now, thanks to the introduction of Nuline, which has taken the line dancing world by storm and brought it right up to date. “You might find yourself dancing to anything from Adele or Lady Gaga to Take That,” says Penarth’s Nuline instructor Ruth Brown. “We dance to pop, Latin, folk, jazz – anything that works for a routine.” Under the Nuline banner with its recognisable orange and black logo, the classes are fun and the dress is casual. “Comfortable shoes are the most important thing,” says Ruth, who’s now
into her 15th year of teaching line dancing, “so you can move easily and freely. Everyone can join in, whatever their age, and you don’t need a partner. “I have people of all ages in my classes, from teenagers upwards. Nuline dancing is a form of low impact aerobics so it’s very good exercise as well as fun and a way to meet people and make friends.” Classes are designed to suit different levels of experience, starting with Absolute Beginners, followed by Beginners, Intermediate and then Advanced. During a class Ruth will teach a dance routine, building up the moves and practising each until everyone is confident. “It’s not like a ceilidh or twmpath where a caller shouts out what you have to do. We learn the dances so that I might just need to give the occasional reminder of what move comes next,” she explains. Ruth, who also runs line dancing classes in various venues around the Vale, plus social nights and weekends, under the name Loose Boots, is available for private hire for weddings, parties, corporate events and birthdays.

She is very excited about what Nuline is doing to bring line dancing up to date and attract a younger crowd to the pastime she loves. “I am very patient and easygoing when I’m teaching as I want everyone to enjoy it as much as I do!” Ruth’s Nuline classes cost £4, which includes tea or coffee for daytime classes.

What our customers say “We chose a 53 plate Seat Ibiza manual with air-conditioning. Our previous car had failed its MOT and we saw the Penarth Motor Company offer in Penarth View for £250 off so we went to see Dusty and Chris. “It took us about half an hour to choose the new car. We didn’t need help with finance but the price, low mileage and service history were all important to us. Dusty and Chris were very helpful in sorting out a couple of minor problems. It’s the first Seat we’ve had and we’re pleased with its performance. We would recommend Penarth Motor Company to our family and friends too.” Graham Marsh

029 2070 7275 Waz Khaliq The very best in automotive audio, security, navigation, entertainment and customisation. B&B Audio Concepts has been installing, upgrading and customising in-car audio and visual entertainment hardware, phones and computers, security systems and satellite navigation systems of all shapes and sizes since 1987. “B&B was the first car hi-fi shop Cardiff, which we took over from the original owners,” says proprietor Waz Khaliq. “We have worked hard to acquire an expertise and a reputation for excellence. We have won many awards for the high standard of our work, including UK champion in the International Auto Sound Challenge Association (Iasca/SCA) in 1998, 1999 and runner-up in 2000.” Now based handily just off Penarth Road on the West Point Industrial Estate, with a packed showroom and a clean, well-equipped workshop, B&B Audio Concepts is a family-run one-stop shop for all the automotive gear you could want, from sat navs and hands-free phones and MP3 players to shiny alloy wheels, exhausts and parking sensors. “There’s nothing we can’t do,” says Waz proudly. “We discuss your needs to work out exactly the right product for you – we don’t just sell you a box, it’s all about your lifestyle. “We have the expertise and facilities to work on any vehicle, and can visit you wherever and whenever necessary. It’s not just cars, we can work on bikes, quads, tries, vans, trucks, coaches, limos, and even yachts. “The workshop is fully insured and we have our own RTA which means we can tune any vehicle to perfection. We also repair damaged or broken audio equipment with our own inhouse team and we can supply graphics, wraps and airbrush work.”
Three projects currently in the workshop are a good example of Waz’s philosophy of service and his can-do attitude: a Maserati twin turbo is having a sound system plus a complete interior revamp; a Range Rover is being treated to tinted windows, LED number plates, a digital conversion for a TV, 22in wheels, chrome wing mirrors and a new front bumper and light assembly; and a Ford Focus, the third car Waz and his team have worked on for a disabled young man who loves his cars, is having a complete entertainment system, Bluetooth phone, iPod connection, tinted windows, 17in wheels and parking sensors. This approach to looking after customers extends to after-sales service as well, when any faults will be speedily repaired or the item replaced. Visit B&B – “the Mecca for ICE” – for a demo and advice on the best entertainment, navigation or security for your vehicle. All Saints The re-ordering of All Saints Church is on track for completion in early December and will offer a variety of community venues that can be used for a multitude of purposes, writes Peter Trott. The Parochial Church Council of All Saints Penarth, and its incumbent The Reverend Peter Cox, are pleased to announce that the first phase in the redevelopment of the main church building is progressing well with completion expected in early December, just in time for Christmas. The major works, which began in June, are to install a new mezzanine floor in the west end of the church, and include a lift access, a new servery, more meeting rooms, a new crèche and toilet facilities within the church. The church will also have new lighting as well as having its decoration refreshed. The re-ordering of the west end of the nave is the first step in the redevelopment of All Saints to enable it to offer more to the town as a place of worship, and to play an even greater role within the wider community of Penarth. The completion of the re-ordering means that All Saints itself will be available for use by church and community groups and it will be able to support a wider range of uses, alongside the two halls in Victoria Square. The church and the two halls will form a complex of community venues that can be used for a multitude of purposes, from local societies and group meetings to concerts and the regular services that mark the rhythm of the Church in Wales year.
40
Existing church services will also change, with the introduction of the new facilities allowing the church to offer new experiences of worship. The first of these will begin in the autumn with the introduction of a Messy Church service for children and their families, held once a month in the re-ordered All Saints. This service will compliment the highly successful Saturday morning Toast events held for young families in the Lesser Hall. Through the installation of the mezzanine floor, lift and servery a new space is created to enable receptions and group meetings to be held within an elevated area separate from the main church while experiencing the wonderful surroundings of All Saints. The meeting rooms will mean that the Sunday School will be able to meet during services while remaining in the church throughout each service. All this has been possible through the generosity of the members of All Saints congregation, residents in the parish and the wider community
of Penarth. Significant grants have also been received from a number of local and national bodies, for which we are very grateful. Our huge thanks go to everyone who has contributed or helped raise the funds to enable us to undertake this
Church
work. A key event for 2011 will be an Auction, Dinner and Dance held on 19th November at the Paget Rooms. Throughout the Christmas period a complete calendar of Christmas events will mean everyone can come and enjoy these new facilities. A celebratory service of thanksgiving to open the new facilities will be held early in the New Year. More details on the progress of the re-ordering, our Christmas services and events and the service of thanksgiving, can be found on the All Saints Penarth pages of www.churchinwales. org.uk as well as on Facebook at All Saints Church, Penarth.

The appetite for body art shows no signs of slowing down, and explains why Justin and Christina Witney at Penarth’s own tattoo studio, Alley Cat Ink, are moving to bigger premises.
“We have been really busy in the shop in Glebe Street over the last few months and we feel we need to be in better, more visible premises,” says Justin. “Our new shop will be in the old Aquazoo store on Plassey Street. We are also looking to stock a selection of alternative clothing and jewellery, including some children’s clothing as well as T-shirts and dresses for adults. “We don’t have an official opening day as yet but we are hoping to be open mid-late September,” he says. “The shop has been going from strength to strength and as our ‘All You Can Ink’ deal has been so successful and well received we will be continuing that for the time being (see below for details).”

029 2025 6451 Care-in-Wales provides personal and practical care and support to people in Penarth and the surrounding area. With a philosophy that disability, age or illness should not prevent someone leading a rewarding and comfortable life, Care-in-Wales’s aim is to help people to stay in their own homes and keep their independence. “Depending on needs, the care we provide can be for elderly people who are becoming frail, people with dementia or with learning or physical disabilities. We provide medication assistance, palliative care, personal hygiene care or respite cover for carers,” explains managing director Stephen Gamgee, MBE. “We also provide domestic services such as cleaning, food preparation and serving, laundry, shopping and transportation. We can provide companionship, live in care or help to maintain a social life. All our services are designed to give people comfort, independence and peace of mind within a framework of respect for their individuality. We want to maximise people’s quality of life,” says Stephen, who has many years of experience working in supported housing and with vulnerable people. and practical care to help develop a sense of peace. Having a relative with dementia can be very distressing for all concerned and our special approach is to work alongside families to take the distress away as far as possible
“We aim to help younger adults, and maybe also those who are now not so young, to be freed from the consequences of their personal difficulties so that they can have fun, have relationships, study, work and try to realise their aspirations,” says Debbie, a qualified social worker with almost 30 years of experience providing care and managing care services.
“Whatever the person’s needs, we carefully match staff to them. Our Personal Assistants – we call them that rather than Care Assistants – are recruited because they are the right fit with our ethos. We want people who show they have humanity, common sense, optimism, flexibility, decency, creativity and a sense of loyalty. If they also have knowledge and experience, so much the better! We can always train people – it is much more difficult to change those who don’t share our values,” says Debbie. “All staff are trusted to be wise decision-makers and encouraged to go the extra mile.”
“Older adults still want to enjoy life, but also want to have a sense of security and comfort – we call this our ‘silver-service’. Staff are trained to meet all physical needs and to be sensitive to emotional needs, changing the support as those needs change. For people with dementia, our ‘focus-on-feelings’ provides personal

Communicating with, and supporting, carers is a theme that cuts across everything we do. Care-in-Wales can give carers the opportunities to enjoy a bit of independence, confident that their relative is well looked after.”

Child of Our Time and What Makes Me Me The Learning Partnership is delighted to announce that Lord Robert Winston will be the key note speaker at their 2011 Autumn Conference in November at The Celtic Manor. ‘Child of Our Time’ is a unique 20-year project following 25 children born in 2000 from birth to the age of 20. They come from across the UK from a range of genetic, social, geographical and ethnic backgrounds. Through this landmark piece of research, as the children grow from infancy, through childhood and on to becoming young adults, Professor Winston, and his research team, build up a coherent and scientifically accurate picture of how the genes and the environments of growing children interact to make a fully formed adult. The research sets out to answer many unanswered questions; one of the most important questions that the project is seeking to answer is “Are we born or are we made?”. ‘What Makes Me Me’ is all about the things that make you individually you, from the shape of your ears and the sound of your voice to the things that really scare you or make you laugh. Your genes, your personality, and your talents are all part of the story. Find out just what makes you you. Taking key messages from these fascinating pieces of work, Robert Winston will explore how we, as educators and parents, can take account of individual differences and positively influence the journey from childhood to adolescence to adulthood. The school and home experience really does matter!
46
Lord Robert Winston Lord Robert Winston, Professor of Science and Society and Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College London, a university with one of the strongest international science bases, runs a research programme in the Institute of Reproductive and Developmental Biology. He is also Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University, Chairman of the Royal College of Music and
was voted “Peer of the Year” by his fellow Parliamentarians in June 2008. He is a member of the Council of the University of Surrey. Professor Winston’s research led to the development of gynaecological microsurgery in the 1970s and various improvements in reproductive medicine, subsequently adopted internationally, particularly in the field of endocrinology and IVF. His work on pre-implantation genetic diagnosis enabled families carrying gene defects to have children free from fatal illnesses.

Set sail with Challenge Wales It has been a busy summer for Challenge Wales, the 72ft Welsh sail training vessel, and she will be sailing on during the winter, writes Vicky Williams. Young people from different parts of Wales, including Penarth, have been spending time on board the boat visiting different ports, learning sailing skills, developing life skills such as teamwork and communication, and undertaking their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme but, above all, having fun, facing challenges and making new friends. During July and August Challenge Wales visited Milford Haven and sailed across the Irish Sea to southern Ireland (where the young people and crew were lucky enough to see Jedward!). The crew enjoyed having dolphins accompany the boat on many of the
trips, a fantastic and heart-warming experience. We anchored at Lundy Island, visited Ilfracombe, sailed into Swansea, and welcomed a couple of hundred people on board the boat during the Bristol Water Festival. We saw more dolphins, tried out our new square – yes, square – frying pan, welcomed young people aboard in Penarth and exhibited at the Cardiff Harbour Festival. It has certainly been a fantastic learning adventure for both crew and young people over the past couple of months and lots of great memories have been created.
And of course Challenge Experience Days, our popular adult sailing days, are a great opportunity for nonsailors and experienced ones to take the helm and enjoy big boat sailing in the Bristol Channel. Winter sailing also enables volunteers to get trained ready for next year. If you are interested in being a volunteer (crew or shore-based) now is the perfect time to check out the details on our website and get involved. You’ll be very welcome.
The aim of the Challenge Wales charity, which is run entirely by volunteers, is to teach personal and social skills to young people between 12 and 25 through sailing. They learn about team work, communication skills, planning, respect for others, responsibility and self-esteem. During the winter, Challenge Wales will continue to sail and there are plenty of opportunities for getting on board. The Challenge Wales Bursary Scheme is still available during winter and into spring 2012, enabling the charity to subsidise groups and individuals (if eligible).

For delicious takeaway breakfasts and lunches visit OJ’s Sandwich Bar in Cogan. Takeaway food is everywhere these days, to suit our busy lives. What makes it a success with customers is a combination of convenience, value and quality, and new baguette, sandwich and snack shop OJ’s is a good example of how to do it. Opened in Pill Street, Cogan, in March by owner Claire Westmoreland, OJ’s Sandwich Bar (which is named after her twins Olivia and Jay) offers a tempting menu of freshly made baguettes, sandwiches, wraps and rolls with a host of fillings to choose from. “Hot fillings such as egg and bacon breakfast rolls are cooked to order, so everything is piping hot and as fresh as possible,” says Claire.
“We also have other hot dishes to take away, including soup of the day and jacket potatoes with fillings such as coronation chicken, chilli beef, chicken tikka, cheese and coleslaw and beans. Our breakfast menu includes a roll with bacon, sausage, egg and black pudding and on Saturday mornings we offer a full English breakfast. “Pies, pasties and Premier sausage rolls are also available. Paninis and baguette melts are popular for big appetites: choose your filling and then we grill it – delicious,” says Claire. For a sweet treat there’s a selection of cakes, sponges and Danish pastries, plus a choice of hot and
cold drinks. Salad lovers are not neglected either, with a variety of salad bowls to choose from. OJ’s children’s lunch box – a choice of ham/egg/cheese/tuna sandwich, plus crisps and fruit drink – will make sure the kids have a nutritious meal at school. Private Health Visitor
Working in partnership with you and your child Private Health Visitor provides independent support and advice to parents so that they can give their babies and young children the best start in life. Research suggests that many new parents bring their baby home very unprepared. Some are not sure of the basics such as changing nappies and bathing and mothers sometimes leave hospital unsure of feeding techniques, whether it’s breast or bottle, which can be very upsetting. Private Health Visitor is an independent health visitor service founded by experienced nurse Alyson Pugh. “Our staff are all experienced health visitors with nursing backgrounds, qualified to MSc or BSc level and with a Specialist Community Health Practitioner qualification,” says Alyson. “We visit parents in their own homes as well as offering support in groups and clinics. “Parents need lots of support during the first weeks and months of a baby’s life and if a family feels that the service provided by the NHS doesn’t meet their needs this is where we come in. We offer parents and guardians health visitors and nursery nurses as part of the team..”
“Whether you would like a oneoff session covering a particular aspect of care, right through to a full seven days a week health visiting service to support you throughout your child’s development, we are here to help,” says Alyson. “Babies don’t come with a handbook! Our service is clientled and tailored to each family’s needs. We work evenings and weekends to suit the parents. A private health visitor has more time to offer and can provide a service tailored to your specific needs.” Breast-feeding and behaviour problems are an area of particular expertise for Alyson, but the service is very broad and can include antenatal support, first day and ongoing visits, baby massage, weaning support, behaviour support, speech and language, toilet training, faddy eating and much more, up to help with starting school. Alyson is a ‘hands on’ private health visitor. She is a registered nurse and
a registered health visitor at MSc level. “I have 25 years’ experience gained in both NHS hospitals and community settings and I now work exclusively in the community as an independent health visitor,” she says. “My aim is to provide practical, non-judgmental support and advice, to promote healthy lifestyles and to enhance the wellbeing of parents and children. “I am registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council which demands the highest standards of clinical practice and I regularly undertake professional training to update my practice and skills. I am a member of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and am fully insured and CRB-checked.” Private Health Visitor works between 9am and 10pm, seven days a week. Penarth Food Penarth’s first ever Local Food Festival was a resounding success, as festival co-organiser Anthony Slaughter reports. The festival, organised by local community group Gwyrddio Penarth Greening (GPG), took place on Sunday July 17th at The Kymin on Beach Road. With more than 30 stalls offering a delicious array of local produce, the festival catered for all tastes. Treats on offer included lamb burgers from Glam Lamb, delicious local sausages from Penarth’s Cogan Hall Farm, a fresh fish grill from The Fig Tree, crepes by La Creperie de Sophie and tasty vegetarian food from Parsnipship. Those with a sweet tooth were spoilt for choice with a mouthwatering selection of cakes by Hamptons. Also on offer were
Hippo Hyfryd’s handmade gourmet chocolates, traditional sweets from Umpalumpa and much, much more. Honey and beeswax products were provided by Nature’s Little Helpers, who also provided an informative bee-keeping demo. A cafe was run by Travellers in Mind, with exceedingly popular chocolate brownies. Children were very well catered for, with a dedicated play area where they helped make Delilah the green dragon. Pedal Cafe’s pedal-powered smoothie maker and the facepainting stall both did a roaring trade with children of all ages. The event was very well attended, with crowds waiting to enter as the festival opened and the site remained bustling with hundreds of people throughout the day. Many members of the crowd commented favourably on the carnival

atmosphere of the event, some observing that the festival had a real sense of community in contrast to larger food festivals they had been to. The organising team was thrilled with the turnout. It was great to see so many people coming together as a community to celebrate local food. We were also very pleased with the high level of interest in the GPG stands, which offered information on sustainable food and environmental issues – there was a real appetite for information and discussion. The festival was attended by Mayor of Penarth, Councillor Anthony Ernest and his wife Gaynor, and they were introduced to the stallholders by GPG’s Food Group chair Susannah McWilliam. The Mayor greatly enjoyed tasting and viewing the goods on offer and complimented GPG on their initiative in bringing the event together.
Festival
The stallholders enjoyed the day and were thrilled by the turnout, with many having to restock their stands during the day. Stallholders also commented very favourably on the organisation of the event. “It was a wonderful day, full of happy smiling faces, no matter what the weather threw at us,” said Mike Caplan-Hill, owner of the Fig Tree restaurant. “I’m so glad we were asked to take part. I and my staff who worked at the festival had a great time, well done everyone and thank you!” He also congratulated the organisers and volunteers whose work had made the day such a success. Having seen that there is a real appetite and interest in local and sustainable food GPG is already planning for next year’s event and also has plans for a Green Christmas Fair in the town later this year.
Gwyrddio Penarth Greening is a community-based organisation that aims to raise awareness of climate change and sustainable living issues through practical community projects. These have included planting a community orchard at Cosmeston and the launch of the Shop in Penarth loyalty card scheme. The group holds regular bimonthly public meetings at the Windsor Arms pub with presentations and discussions on subjects such as renewable energy and sustainable transport. AB Snell & Son
029 2071 3934
Since 1960 Penarth store AB Snell & Son has been providing the town with stationery supplies, local history books and ice cream. Snells is a well loved part of the scene in Penarth, offering an eclectic mix of great value office stationery, toner cartridges, sweets, ice cream and a friendly welcome plus a biscuit for your canine companion. “It’s one of the oldest family-owned shops in town,” says Richard Snell, the ‘son’ in the business’s name. “When my dad opened up I was a baby and he was still a young man. He used to say to unwanted callers ‘you’ll have to see my father’. “It’s a real family business. My wife Lucia and my son and daughter all work here, my middle sister does the accounts and my mum who’s now in her 70s still serves behind the till sometimes,” says Richard. Commercial stationery supplies is probably the core of Snells. “Great service and competitive prices
are vital. We are cheaper than our main competitors and can access a huge range of products very quickly,” says Richard. “We do office furniture and refurbishments and supply schools and several local charities; in fact we supply the head office and its whole portfolio of shops around the UK for one well known charity. Our toner cartridges are probably the cheapest around and we have a complete online ordering facility in the pipeline.” Aside from the stationery a quirky diversity is the order of the day. There’s such a mixture of items, for example the extensive range of local history books. “I’m passionate about local history and support publishers and authors such as Eileen Younghusband as much as I can,” says Richard. “We sell the books far and wide, all over Wales and overseas. “Snells is an old-fashioned variety store. Come in for a dairy ice cream from Anglesey, for pick ‘n’ mix or a pen. You’re sure to have a warm welcome.”

07538 088 628 Autumn is the ideal time to have any minor damage such as paintwork scratches, bumper scuffs or dents repaired to the highest quality, cost-effectively and conveniently at your home or workplace, with ChipsAway. “Winter brings with it all sorts of factors which make small dents and paintwork damage much worse, and therefore more costly in the long run,” says local ChipsAway owner Robert McGovern. “Wet roads, ice and snow, grit and salt on the roads all speed up the formation of rust on any exposed metalwork, so I recommend fixing any damaged bodywork sooner rather than later,” says Robert. Established in 1994, ChipsAway has built a fantastic reputation for providing high quality repairs on the spot, eliminating the inconvenience and potential expense of using a body shop. “Repairs carried out using the unique ChipsAway automotive paint repair system maintain the integrity of the car’s original paintwork and therefore its value,” says Robert. “Operating from a fully-equipped mobile workshop, we come to you at home or your workplace, saving you time and money. We can complete car body repairs without repainting the entire panel/ wheel, which means you can now get minor damage to your car paint done within a few hours, to a high quality commercial standard and at a fraction of the price of traditional body shop methods,” says Robert.
“The ChipsAway repair system complies with the latest EU environmental legislation and all paint/chemicals are isocyanatefree. We’re also mobile alloy wheel refurbishment specialists. Our alloy repair techniques for scuffed and kerbed alloy wheel rims and spokes are fast, professional and cost-effective, and negate the need for shot blasting and complete alloy wheel refurbishment.

Penarth RFC
“The success of the club relies on the development of players through our mini/junior and youth teams where the players gain the experience of playing rugby football and graduating to senior level.” Penarth Rugby Football Club is entering the 131st year since its founding in 1879. The founders were two brothers, Cyril and Arthur Llewellyn Batchelor, sons of John Batchelor, known as the ‘Friend of Freedom’, whose statue is displayed in the Hayes in Cardiff. The club developed quickly into one that could compete with the best of its day. Its fixture list expanded and included the great clubs of Wales: Cardiff, Newport, Swansea and Llanelli. In 1888 the first of a number of players was selected to represent Wales at international level, Richard ‘Dickie’ Garrett who played against the touring New Zealand Maoris at Swansea. Dickie Garrett’s clubmate George Rowles gained his international cap in 1892 against England at Blackheath. Others were to follow: JCM Dyke, Mel Rosser, Jack Bassett and Gomer Hughes. The Barbarian Football Club, which from 1901 on their Easter tour of Wales played against Penarth on Good
Friday afternoon, was always a great attraction until 1986 when the curtain was pulled down on the Barbarian fixture. JCM Dyke and Len Thomas were selected to tour New Zealand in 1908 with the Anglo Welsh side, as was Jack Bassett in 1930 with the British Lions. The first tour to France took place in 1910 when Penarth played against Tarbes and Bayonne and again in 1911 and 1913 when they added Brive, Pau, Bordeaux and Le Havre to their list of opponents. Bayonne attracted the attention of one Penarth player, Owen Rowe, who settled in the French town. Owen became their player-coach leading them to triumph in the spring of 1913 when they won the French Championship. Penarth again visited France in the October of 1913, played Bayonne and went home undefeated. The Great War had a major impact on all countries and during that conflict Penarth lost 17 of its players.
The inter-war years brought about many changes including the provision of the Athletic Field by the Earl of Plymouth for the use by the rugby, hockey and cricket clubs of Penarth, with the former ground at Stanwell Road being made over to housing. There was success on the playing field under the captaincy of Jack Bassett from 1927 to 1932, during which time he gained the first of his international caps, in 1929. He toured with the British Lions to New Zealand and Australia and on his return captained Wales and Penarth until 1932. A number of people who have been prominent over the years for Penarth have been Lot Thorn, Kevin Bush and John Coughtrey. Kevin joined and played for the club from 1950, becoming an official of the club; he was President until his death in 2005.

For many years the club enjoyed being part of the Merit Table playing against the top teams in Wales and England and against a number of visiting touring sides from Ireland, Argentina, Australia and South Africa. Since that time there have been changes in the structure of rugby with the development of the league system. Although Penarth is an amateur side there is a mixture of amateur, semiprofessional and professional rugby union and there have been alterations to the laws and the way in which the game is played. It took the Penarth club a long time to settle into the league system but in recent years the club has enjoyed a great improvement in its success on the playing field and is currently playing in the Swalec 3rd Division South East. The success of the club relies on the development of players through our mini/junior and youth teams where the players gain the experience of playing rugby football and graduating to senior level. We are ever grateful to those parents who, as coaches, referees and first aiders, spend a lot of their time helping to develop the young athletes’ rugby skills. Both the mini/junior and youth committees are extremely hard-working, organising the training and fixtures and raising funds to provide the kit, etc. We have been fortunate that Chairman Mike Gooding has a small but very active committee who have worked tirelessly to improve the development of the club and players by prudent use of the funding for improving facilities and the quality of playing standards. Information regarding the club is available on the Penarth RFC website. New players are always welcome to join us. Training nights are held at the Athletic Field on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, starting at 7pm. As the season begins new members are welcome to join and support the club. David Hughes, Penarth RFC.
