@PenarthView issue 06 Welcome to the sixth edition of Penarth View, a truly local publication that is distributed free to the residents and businesses of Penarth. The aim and goal of Penarth View is to celebrate the diverse and vibrant community we have in Penarth where we feature quality local businesses combined with a mixture of local content, views and news.

In this issue: Annual Christmas Tree Festival The Annual Christmas Tree Festival in St Augustine’s Church Penarth is now in its 11th year. The Festival takes place in the second week of December and was the first to be held in the Diocese. Now it’s the biggest and it continues to grow in popularity. Full details on pages 43.

The SAFE Foundation Young people from the Cardiff area not in full time education, employment or training (NEET) are encouraged to take part in a unique international sports and global citizenship project in Sierra Leone which has been supported by Gwirvol. Full details on pages 24 and 25.

Music in Hospitals (MiH) is a registered charity that has been running for over 60 years. The charity aims to improve the quality of life of adults and children with all kinds of illness and disability through the therapeutic benefits of professionally performed live music. In addition to Wales, MiH has offices in Surrey, Manchester and a separate operation in Edinburgh covering concerts in Wales, England, Northern Ireland, The Channel Islands and Scotland. Last year MiH presented over 600 live concerts in hospitals, hospices, day care centres, special needs schools, nursing and residential homes throughout Wales. Full details on pages 46 and 47.

Penarth Hockey Club With just four games played in the new season, Penarth Hockey Club could be forgiven for feeling a little optimistic for the future. As the county’s only team, the club with a long history of producing top level young talent has fallen on hard times in recent years and has struggled to bring junior players through in the same numbers as before. But now, a short time into this new season, there are reasons to be cheerful. The men’s first team has achieved two successive promotions and now plays in the sixth tier of UK hockey. Full article on pages 64 and 65.

Penarth Festival Fun Run December 11th Diabetes UK Cymru and Marie Curie Cancer Care are appealing for people to raise vital funds during the festive season by signing up for their Penarth Festive Fun Run. The charities have teamed up to host the second fancy dress festive fun run in Penarth on Sunday 11 December to raise crucial funds to support their work. Starting at Cliff top playground at 1.30pm, the circular run will take participants down towards Penarth pier along the seafront and back through Windsor Gardens before completing the course back on the cliff top. Full article on pages 12 and 13. Application Form on page 14. Special Thanks: This publication would not have been possible without the support from local businesses, Webjects for the backend support of the website and photography, Dan and Ros who have worked tirelessly in getting the publication to the printers, and finally Xpedient Print Services for organising the print. Local chartered building surveyor Alex French spends a lot of time advising people about different regulations and the legal aspects of their individual projects and says that a large majority of these enquiries are about party wall matters. “Many people aren’t aware of their responsibilities when building on or near boundary walls, whether they divide different properties or just gardens,” explains Alex. “The Party Wall Act, which came into force in 1997, provides a framework for preventing and resolving disputes in relation to party walls, boundary walls and excavations near neighbouring buildings. Anyone in England and Wales who intends to carry out the kind of work described in the Act must give adjoining owners notice of their intention. “This notice must be given at least two months before the planned start date for work to the party wall and is only valid for a year, so it shouldn’t be served too long before you wish to start,” says Alex. “If you can’t reach an agreement with your adjoining owner, this is the time to bring in a surveyor to draw up an award on your behalf.” The party wall award document sets out the work that will be carried out and specifies any additional work required, e.g. necessary protection to prevent damage. It contains a set of drawings showing the proposed work and contains a record of the condition of the adjoining property before the work begins (so that any damage to the adjoining land or buildings can be made good). The surveyor will also inspect the works while they’re going on to see that they are in accordance with the award.

“The general principle in the Act is that the building owner who initiated the work pays for it if the works are solely for his benefit. However, there are cases where the adjoining owner may pay part of the cost and we will advise on that. “The main factor is whether your planned work might have consequences for the structural strength and support functions of the party wall or cause damage to the adjoining owner’s side of the wall,” says Alex. “If you are in doubt about whether your planned work requires a notice, we are always happy to provide professional and confidential advice.” Alex French is a member of the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors. As well as party wall matters, Alex French Associates offers a full range of building surveying services: • Project management Acting as contract administrator/ employer’s agent on refurbishment and renovation of commercial, industrial and domestic properties. • Disabled adaptations Producing an Accommodation Report and design options, producing a specification and schedule of work, obtaining approvals and coordinating the project until completion.

• Asbestos surveys Type II surveys on all buildings. • Sustainable building technology All aspects of renewable energy and sustainability.

• Architectural/design work Design work and the production of planning and building regulation drawings for commercial, residential and listed buildings. • Party wall disputes Acting as party wall surveyor to both sides and as ‘agreed surveyor’. • CDM coordination For all types of commercial and industrial buildings.

029 2070 1091 At Arth Wines you will find not only wine at supermarket prices but also a range of wines some of which may not be available elsewhere in Wales. Since opening in Station Approach in March 2010 Arth Wines has been offering Penarth a completely independent wine merchant, with all the choice for customers that being independent brings. “We know that our independence is valued by our loyal customers and we would like to thank you all for your continued support through this year which has been so hard for everyone,” says proprietor Richard Silk, aka ‘Arthur’. “It doesn’t mean our wines are expensive – costs are kept down because we import products directly from Europe where we can. There are many small vineyards around the world making their wines with great care and it is these wine makers who we wish to support. We try not to stock branded products that you can buy in other off-licences.” At Arth Wines you will also find organic, bio-dynamic, low-sulphate, vegan and vegetarian-friendly wines which are becoming very popular.

“Extremes like this reinforce why mass-produced wines can be a matter of compromise, not just with the wine but for the future of the vineyards. Come and be surprised at our prices, you may find a better deal for yourself – our organic wines start at £4.95,” says Richard. “All our white and rose wines, beers and lagers are kept in a cold store, a unique feature of the shop, all at the right temperature to drink. Wines are displayed by grape variety and price, not by country, and the red wine shelves display the heaviest wines at the bottom and lightest at the top. And of course our friendly staff are there to help you make your selection. “Look out for our new website where you can see our offers and range of products and also where you can also order at your convenience,” says Richard.

• Free evening delivery if you live in Penarth (minimum orders apply). • Reserve stock and collect it by parking right outside the shop, next to Penarth railway station.

“Some of these are now our best sellers. If you have been lucky enough to visit an organic grower you will have seen that they do not use petrol chemical pesticides, fertilisers or fining products, which may be deposited back into the grapes. “There are some areas in the world where drought has forced the closure of vineyards because the soil was useless after years of intense farming but right next door an organic vineyard has survived because the soil structure has been developed organically for such harsh conditions.

Since opening Windsors in Penarth town centre in April, Peter and Lynne Ellis have received a warm welcome from customers and are now eagerly looking forward to their first Christmas. “We have exciting new lines of gifts and home accessories coming in to give our customers an opportunity to come in and browse to find something a little bit different,” says Lynne. “We are extremely pleased with our flame lamps at the moment – they have proved to be very popular.

They give the illusion of an open flame so they can be used as an effective table lamp or create a different atmosphere by situating them in an open fireplace, whichever you prefer. “Our aim at Windsors is to provide something a little bit different, of good quality and at a reasonable price. We pride ourselves on presenting a modern retail environment but with old-fashioned values. “We are quite happy to provide a delivery service and will always try and source an item if you are looking for something in particular,” says Lynne. Not sure what to buy for someone on your list? Windsor Gift Vouchers are perfect if you can’t decide what to purchase and Lynne and Peter can also hold goods for customers if they are not ready for them until a later date. “Everyone is looking forward to sampling our Christmas Yankee Candles & Accessories. It’s a joy to sell Yankee Candles, we’re surrounded by such a wonderful array of fabulous fragrances. Our customers often tell us that they can smell the shop before they see it on Windsor Road. “Why not come in for a browse on Penarth Festival day (Sunday 27th November) and join us for a drink and a mince pie to get the festive season underway. We look forward to seeing you!”

Open six days a week. Monday to Saturday.

Get festive for charities by doing the Penarth Festive Fun Run Diabetes UK Cymru and Marie Curie Cancer Care are appealing for people to raise vital funds during the festive season by signing up for their Penarth Festive Fun Run. People can run or walk the 3k (twomile) course in festive fancy dress, whether it is a Santa suit, an elf costume or simply a piece of tinsel. Last year around 200 people took part in the run, raising in excess of ÂŁ6,000 which was a great achievement for a new event. Due to popular demand, this year children under the age of 12 are also invited to take part as long as they are accompanied by an adult entrant. In addition to the run, the day will feature entertainment for the whole family including music from the RAF St Athan Brass Band, mulled wine and brilliant raffle prizes from local businesses. Diabetes UK Cymru supports the one in 20 people now diagnosed with the serious lifelong condition in Wales. The charity also funds important research into the condition including research projects totalling more than ÂŁ960,000 in Wales alone.

029 2042 6068 Dai Williams, National Director of Diabetes UK Cymru, said: “We are delighted to join forces with Marie Curie Cancer Care again this year to host our second Penarth Festive Fun Run. “It is a fantastic event for all the family which will raise much-needed funds for both Diabetes UK Cymru and Marie Curie Cancer Care. “Money our fun runners raise will enable us to provide advice, information and support to the 153,000 people living with diabetes in Wales and pay for crucial research into the condition.” The Marie Curie Hospice in Penarth is a 30 bedded unit that provides specialist nursing care to terminally ill patients and their families completely free of charge. It costs over £3.9 million a year to run the Hospice and 70 per cent of this comes from voluntary income such as sponsorship from events such as these. Deborah Hooper, Community Fundraiser from the Marie Curie Hospice, Penarth, said “We are thrilled to be taking part in the Penarth Festive Fun Run alongside Diabetes’s UK Cymru once again. “Last year was such a great success and we are hoping that this year will be even better. “This is such a fun event for all the family to get involved with and we are urging people to sign up to take part this Christmas to help raise much needed funds for our local Marie Curie Hospice, Penarth. “Money raised by the runners will help provide essential nursing care to terminally ill patients, totally free of charge at our local hospice.” Registration for the run costs £10 for adults or £5 for children.

029 2070 9526 A winter without fog! All spectacle wearers have at some point encountered what we commonly refer to as our glasses ‘steaming up’, or fogging. It doesn’t matter where we are, it always happens when we move from a cold to a hot environment. This can be problematic as well as unsightly. It’s also a major inconvenience as we rely on instant vision at all times. “There are sprays and solutions you can buy over the counter that reduce the effects of fogging, but there has never, until now, been a total solution that will prevent it,” says optician Alison Drake of Penarth’s Osmond Drakes.

“We also welcome Tes, our new Dispensing Optician. She recently completed the Berlin Marathon and raised money for the RNIB. Thank you to all our patients who sponsored her,” says Alison.

“Award-winning Optifog represents a real scientific breakthrough. Optifog lenses deliver unique lens technology that gives long-lasting fog-free vision to all patients.” For dealing with low winter sun when you’re driving, Transitions XTRAactive are the first lenses which darken inside the car behind the windscreen. “Transitions XTRAactive lenses are also ideal for customers who have professional or leisure activities out of doors. XTRAactive lenses are new everyday adaptive lenses, that go extra dark outdoors in sunny conditions and also darken inside the car,” says Alison. Transitions protect your eyes as well, blocking 100% UV rays, 100% of the time. Combine them with Crizal for the best clarity of vision and better fade-back time.

Drawing inspiration from the brand’s fashion and accessories, Anna Sui Eyewear incorporates the same fanciful details that have defined the brand since its beginning, including the signature rosebud, Anna’s favorite butterfly motif and classic fretwork design. “Anna herself is well known for her signature eyewear style and loves incorporating sunglasses and optical into her head to toe looks, both on and off the runway,” says Alison. 01446 746 353 Bespoke Affordable Luxury Vale Orangeries have recently transformed a property in St Fagans with their latest orangery design and build project. The brief was to design an extension to the kitchen area and incorporate a new living space for the family. The client required as much light as possible and a brand new bespoke kitchen was also on the wish list. Vale Orangeries’ managing director Dean Edmonds designed an orangery with open plan access from the existing house, and extended the kitchen into the orangery, linking the kitchen and the new living area. The orangery features a large glass lantern roof and bi-folding doors that open fully to the garden, extending the living space even further. Comfort and energy-efficiency were included too: the new space benefits from cosy underfloor heating and recessed lighting to the roof area.

“This orangery has totally transformed the clients’ property. The light floods in from the roof light and the large folding doors. The family now have a multifunctional space which they use every day and it’s great for entertaining, too,” Dean explains. The final finishing touch is an original piece of artwork to be completed by Dean, who is also an artist. Vale Orangeries have completed numerous orangery builds throughout South Wales and offer a free consultation and design service. If you are thinking of an extension or conservatory, but want something different, call Dean or Leanne to discuss how Vale Orangeries can transform your home.

The bespoke kitchen has high gloss units with granite worktops and features all the latest in appliances from cooktop, oven and dishwasher to wine chiller.

It is a totally independent and fully equipped purpose built hearing centre which provides advice, information, hearing tests, digital hearing aids and assistive listening devices. The Centre stocks all makes and models, from the leading manufacturers, of the latest hearing aids and accessories, including modern discreet in-ear hearing aids. Scott has 14 years of experience in the business and is a fellowship member of the British Society of Audiology. With the extensive knowledge and experience he has acquired over the years Scott is able to give you personal and confidential treatment as well as being able

to match your individual needs to a specific product that would be right for you, and providing comprehensive after care. At the Scott Wroe Hearing Centre there is a dedicated room to allow Scott and his team to carry out the latest demonstrations of Live Speech Mapping. This allows you to see first hand how effective your hearing aids are in assisting your hearing loss using real time speech. You will also gain a further understanding of your condition by seeing how speech is reaching your eardrum after being processed via wall-mounted displays. Also available are demonstrations of the most recent technologies including integrated approaches that allow you to connect your hearing aid with televisions, mobile phones and other audio devices. This aims to give you normality and change your perception of impaired hearing by allowing you to hear as much as possible. Are you having difficulty with your hearing or experiencing problems with your current hearing aid? Scott is available for consultations including a number of free hearing

029 2070 7760 tests using audiometric technology, where he can assess your hearing to ensure that the most suitable aids to match your requirements are fitted. All hearing aids come with a 30-day trial period where they can be during which they can be tested at home, or in the work place, with your family and friends to see their suitability and effectiveness. Services also include a fast and effective repair service as well as home visits to those who are unable to otherwise come to the centre. Scott and his team give independent, impartial and professional advice that you can trust.

Testimonial from Dr Alan Dudley My hearing deteriorated after I reached the age of 60. Losing your hearing makes one look quite stupid in conversation especially in groups with background noise as you often misinterpret words. Also attending meetings with a speaker made me ask persons next to me “what did he say?. I was put in contact with Scott Wroe Hearing Centre and my life was transformed. The service has been excellent as have been the aids provided. Nothing has been too much trouble for Scott, Sue and Laura and any slight problem is quickly sorted out. Alan Dudley, retired GP

Young people from Cardiff not in full time education, employment or training (NEET) are encouraged to take part in a unique international sports and global citizenship project in Sierra Leone which has been supported by Gwirvol. The project is being run by The SAFE Foundation and Communities First, Cardiff, and is offering young people aged between 16 and 24 years an opportunity to increase their understanding of global citizenship whilst helping some of the most deprived young people in the world. The project will give volunteering opportunities to young people who would not normally have the chance to travel and will also benefit marginalised children in Sierra Leone with a programme of workshops designed to educate young people in the areas of sexual health, nutrition and skill training. The project in Sierra Leone will run for two weeks at the beginning of December and the young people will be leading the workshops (with staff supervision) to children living in Freetown every week day morning. In the afternoon they will use the power of football to break down cultural barriers by providing football sessions, supervised by and led by Peter Griffiths. The project is also being supported by the fantastic work of Liverpool FC and Wales football star “Craig Bellamy Foundation” which is also based in Sierra Leone. Before departing to Sierra Leone, The NEET young people will take part in six intensive workshops to coach them in all the skills and knowledge they will need to be able to deliver workshops in Africa. It is imperative that all

training workshops are attended in order to qualify for the project. Hannah Fitt of Communities First, who is also acting as project manager for the UK side of the project said : “East Cardiff has historically had a high number of young people not engaged in employment or education and this is a chance for some of them to take part in a life changing project. Not only will it benefit children living in extreme poverty, it will also increase skills, motivation, knowledge and awareness to some of Cardiff’s young people who can then pass this on to their peers.” Lucy Dickenson of The SAFE Foundation said: “We’re extremely excited about this project because of the access to international issues it gives to people who wouldn’t normally have it. This is an amazing chance for marginalised people in the UK to contribute to development on the ground in Sierra Leone.”

Project board member, Peter Griffiths who has played football in the Welsh national team at U16 level against countries such as Portugal and Bulgaria with Craig Bellamy and is leading on the football aspect of the project said : “This is a wonderful opportunity for Cardiff young people who are looking to change and enhance their life skills and self esteem. By using the power of football we aim to increase understanding and global citizenship and help make a difference to some of the most deprived children and young people in the world.” The SAFE Foundation, which is leading the project in Sierra Leone is a registered international development NGO, based in Cardiff but working across the world with a network of people including Mo Jannah of charity ‘Forging Links’ and teachers in Sierra Leone to co-ordinate the international elements of the project. Applicants to the project will be invited to attend a selection day

where candidates will be interviewed informally to gauge their suitability for the project. This is essential to ensure that cultural sensitivity and awareness is observed as well as checking vital things are in place (such as passports, parental consent etc.). Following this, the project board will meet to select the 10 most suitable young people. Young people will also be expected to sign a code of conduct. All travel, accommodation, food, transport, visas, vaccination fees and equipment will be supplied. Young people from East Cardiff who think they will benefit from this trip please get in contact with Hannah Fitt to book onto the assessment day. The number of young people on this day is not limited but only 10 will be selected. If this is successful there will be opportunity to run again in the future, and any young people not on the project this year will have the opportunity to attend UK based volunteering workshops. The assessment date is FRIDAY OCTOBER 14th 2011 at 11am - 2pm AT TROWBRIDGE COMMUNITY CENTRE 91, CAERNARVON WAY, TROWBRIDGE. Refreshments will be provided. 029 2070 2888 Imagine a life full of vitality and energy with a healthy neck and back, little or no degeneration, no medication and no chronic illnesses: chiropractic can play a part in helping you achieve this, says Sean O Maoltuile of Dailyspine Clinic in Hickman Road. Chiropractic is based on a simple principle that your brain “talks” to the rest of your body through a vast communication system mostly made up of nerves. The nerves come out of your brain in a large bundle called the spinal cord and travel down your back inside your spinal column and exit at different levels. The bottom two nerves from your spine come together to form the sciatic nerve which runs all the way down to your big toe – most people have heard of this nerve, for good and bad reasons! “We see everyone from children to elite athletes to people in their 70s,” says Sean, who took over

from Cannon Chiropractic two years ago and developed it into Dailyspine Clinic. “Penarth is a great example of people living full and productive lives in their 70s and 80s – they should be an inspiration to the younger generation. “Apart from pain and stiffness in your back and neck another common sign that you may benefit from visiting a chiropractor is that you have to crack your neck, back or other joints a lot, or that you can’t easily twist or turn your head. “People also visit us for more energy, improved sports performance, for better resistance to disease and to help ensure drug-free lives for themselves and their families,” says Sean.

At Dailyspine Sean also incorporates principles from yoga, Pilates and scientific research to build strong and supple spines capable of producing optimum performance, and he enjoys speaking to businesses and groups of employees about maintaining healthy necks and backs. “We will gladly talk to school children aged 16 and over for free. It helps equip the future generations to look after their spines and we hope will help to reverse the current trend of increasing chronic low back pain in society.”

Contact Sean at Dailyspine Clinic or visit the website for more information.

“Some people are told they have osteoarthritis and are told they just have to live with it. We take a different approach as scientific research has shown that there is no link between osteoarthritis and pain. If we can help you get your spine and nervous system functioning better your symptoms should begin to ease and this will in turn improve your quality of life.” Opening hours Mon, Wed, Fri 9 am – 6:30 pm Tues, Thurs 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Having settled in to their new premises in Plassey Street, Penarth’s own tattoo studio Alley Cat Ink is gearing up for a busy Christmas. “We are very pleased that the new shop has been so well received by our customers both old and new,” say the owners, husband and wife team Justin and Christina Witney. As well as providing tattooing and ear piercing, Alley Cat Ink is now selling some interesting and individual clothes and jewellery. “We are stocking a range of women’s wear from a company called Necessary Evil. We have a selection of their 1940s and 50s style dresses in stock at the moment and they are getting a very positive reaction from customers of all ages,” says Christina. “We are trying to use local companies where possible, so we were very pleased when we found

a Sully-based company called Preschool Punk. They have created a range of alternative T-shirts for children that are available from 0 to 3 months through to 9 years. Some of the designs are based on fairytale stories and some are simple punk slogans. There will be a small Christmas range and they also produce bibs and hats for babies.” The Iron Fist range of clothing has arrived so there is now some menswear and a selection of women’s wear available. “We have some lovely jewellery. Our first company is the Cardiffbased Shottle Bop and they produce apothecary-style necklaces and earrings. We currently have a range of their bestselling necklaces but they can be ordered to customer specifications, no matter how bizarre! “We are also selling Tidal Dream Creations jewellery,” says Christina. “This is a Penarth-based company created by local artist Bea Roberts. Bea hand-makes the jewellery herself using hemp and recycled

materials such as paper and drink cans. The jewellery is Fair Trade and we can take custom orders.” “The tattoo business is going from strength to strength in the new shop,” says Justin. “The new location has made it much easier for people to find us. It also has a much brighter, airier and fresher feel. “We’re a very relaxed studio and we’re always happy to advise on anything tattoo-related, from help with designs to questions about the procedures. First timers don’t have anything to fear – no matter what their age or their knowledge of tattooing, we’ll advise them the best we can.”

Looking for a Christmas present for a tattooed loved one? Alley Cat Ink gift vouchers are available for the tattoo side as well as the rest of the shop.

Penarth Raises a Voice and £4500 for East Africa

VOICE MUSIC FOR AFRICA

Penarth organisation, Raise a Voice, collected a whopping £4,500 for the East Africa Crisis Appeal, after a near sell-out fundraiser at the Paget Rooms in September. Raise a Voice provided top-class entertainment in support of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), celebrating the re-opening of the Paget Rooms and reviving its celebrated history as a sought after music venue. The charitable group, which was formed by a group of Penarth locals in reaction to the harrowing famine that is devastating East Africa, showcased a vibrant mix of music that saw all ages take to the Paget Rooms sprung dancefloor. Before the entertainment kicked off, guest speaker Abdi Hassan gave a tear-jerking speech about the big difference a young group of Penarth locals are making to an integral charity that is helping over 10 million starving Africans. Before being spoilt with a stellar entertainment line-up there was an opportunity to claim free curry upstairs, generously donated by Penarth curry house, Saagor. There was also a chance to buy refreshments from a mobile bar, organised and staffed by JW Bassett Pubs and The Golden Lion, who donated all bar profits to the DEC.

The £4500 raised will provide ALL of the following: • Safe drinking water for almost 16,000 people • Enough high nutrient therapeutic paste to feed 2600 critically malnourished children • Keep 1400 animals alive, providing food and incomes • Provide a health worker with enough needles and syringes to provide over 20,000 vaccinations to children in a mobile clinic

Welsh music talents 3 Day Binge and Miss Maud’s Folly entertained the crowds before saucy Burlesque act, The Angel De-Lites, really turned up the heat in the theatre. Keith Drew presented the big raffle giveaway which was bursting with prizes donated by an array of Penarth businesses. The big headliners of the evening, Cardiff’s acclaimed ska act, Funhouse, took to the stage and packed the dance floor with young and old alike. Most were spent after dancing the night away but the really energetic took the party to Penarth hotspot, Eclipse, where all Raise a Voice ticket holders could claim their free entry. Event organiser Greg Malone said: “The generosity of the people of Penarth has astounded me. We would like to say a big thank you to all the local businesses who donated generously, to the volunteers and performers for making it happen and to the people of Penarth for their sense of fun and moral purpose. It’s heartbreaking to know that there are people in this world who are being denied access to basic human rights, but it’s fulfilling to know that there are people who care and will do something about it.” If you would like to make a contribution to Raise a Voice and show your support then please visit www.justgiving.com/raiseavoice or visit the official website www.raiseavoice.org.uk. Christmas Tree Festival

St. Augustine’s Parish Church Penarth The Annual Christmas Tree Festival in St Augustine’s Church Penarth is now in its 11th year, writes committee member Nic Morgan. St Augustine’s annual Christmas Tree Festival takes place in the second week of December and was the first to be held in the Diocese. Now it’s the biggest and it continues to grow in popularity. The Festival starts with breakfast with Santa in the Church Hall for about 100 children and their families. Then the Mayor with the Town Crier and the Piper arrive to lead the procession of children and families through the small park and up to the church steps where the Mayor declares the Festival open and everyone streams in, to file past and admire the 45 decorated trees in all their glory, mounted on platforms, lining the side aisles in the nave. Meanwhile, local choirs, soloists, bands, instrumentalists, pianists, and an organist on the famous Hill organ, are playing and singing (but not all at the same time!). It is Advent and the children are still at school so they can play a full part in the Festival with their schools and families.

some national, some overseas. This year the chosen charities are The National Autistic Society Cymru, ‘Singing for the Brain’ (Alzheimer’s Society) and The Leprosy Mission. Over the years, the total donated amounts to some £25,000. What is behind the Festival’s enduring popularity? Well, a lot of preparation, a lot of community spirit, and a fine beautiful, building to house it in. The church ranks alongside the finest of William

Butterfield’s designs, such as Keble College Chapel Oxford, All Saints Margaret Street in London, and St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne. There is something in it for everyone: those who devise and decorate the trees, the singers and musicians and, above all, the visitors who can share with their families this unique occasion in a special atmosphere of hope, and afterwards cups of tea, refreshments, and a rest for tired legs back in the parish hall.

The trees are assembled and decorated by schools, businesses, local groups, and individuals on any number of different themes in clever and spectacular displays. Often the sun is streaming through the clerestory windows, before the light fades and the tree lights take over to magical effect. The trees are judged in four categories by an independent artistic expert from outside the area, but an Olympic spirit prevails: it is the taking part that matters. The entrance money (still £2.50 after 10 years, and children are free) all goes to charities, some local,

“Where words fail, music speaks.” Hans Christian Andersen.

Melanie Peters, a former nurse and healthcare research scientist, has recently taken on the role of Music in Hospital’s Development Manager for Wales. Melanie’s role includes identifying professional musicians, organising concerts, raising awareness and fundraising to sustain the charity’s work. Melanie recruits musicians by audition for their musical ability, communication skills and sensitivity. MiH musicians will play in communal areas and even at the bedside of someone too ill to be moved. Concerts cater for every taste in music from classical to jazz, folk, pop and old time and musicians tailor their repertoire to suit the individual needs of the audience. The musicians take time to meet the audience and stay to chat after the performance which is particularly enjoyed by patients who have little contact with relatives or friends. Most of our Welsh musicians are able to perform in both English and Welsh.

46

Music also has the ability to help improve health. Research commissioned by Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, revealed the introduction of live music into healthcare enhanced the quality of life of patients, improved communication, empathy and understanding of patients’ needs, reduced stress and the perception of pain and often led to a reduction in the level of medication required or shortened the length of stay in hospital.

Music in Hospitals Harpist and Singer Kath Coles with a care home resident at a recent concert.

Concerts are very powerful and emotional and Melanie frequently receives feedback from patients and carers who have attended a concert. Examples are: “We had one of our seven years olds die this week and as I sat with his Mum she showed me three photos of her son playing on the harp at the concert. She cried as she told me she will cherish the photos forever as it was such a special day. It was the most awake and bright she had seen him in weeks. She said how grateful she was for the precious memory. I wanted to let you know how valued the concert was and how important it is that you do what you do.” Welsh hospice nurse

“One of our residents is now 101 years of age and unfortunately suffers from dementia. Nowadays she frequently no longer knows who she is but she sang along with all the well known songs, especially Danny Boy.”

Welsh nursing home carer

“I feel quite ‘healed’ by the music”. Welsh community hospital patient “When the musician sang ‘You are my Sunshine’, I had difficulty stopping myself crying as my Dad used to sing it so it brought back memories. I feel I am recovering as when I first came in here I could not cry and that worried me because I have always been able to show my emotions and I was bottling them up.” Welsh hospital patient

Dawn Aesthetic Clinic is a brand new clinic specialising in the treatment and prevention of problem and aging skin. Pharmaceutical grade prescriptive skin care treatments are used in combination with anti-wrinkle and line-smoothing treatments to give dramatic, life-changing results. Qualified first as a nurse and subsequently specialising in all the latest non-surgical skin treatments, owner Dawn Richardson opened the clinic in Barry to offer advanced skin treatments with a caring and individual approach. “Providing a good experience for clients is very important to me. We use only Medical Grade treatments that are research-based and passed for use in the UK,” says Dawn. “All treatments are designed individually. I offer free consultations as sometimes I might suggest a treatment you had not previously considered. “I have been nursing for 20 years and have always had a role in skin care, including deep vein thrombosis. After moving to Cardiff with my two children in 2009 I realised I did not want to stay in the NHS forever and I decided to expand my nursing skills. “I originally trained in the use of botulinum toxins for the treatment of lines and wrinkles, and dermal fillers for deeper lines. I found this very rewarding and satisfying and also that I enjoyed treating their problems as well as the symptoms like wrinkles.

@dawnclinic

“I discovered Obagi, a range of prescriptive skin care products that can help minimise the signs of ageing and treat concerns such as sunspots, acne, melasma and loss of volume. This range is available only from medically trained practitioners. “Being registered by the Nursing and Midwifery Council as an independent prescriber allows me the privilege to treat underlying problems and not just the wrinkles. “I love all treatments that make a client’s skin look and feel younger. I feel it is vital to offer the full range of skincare and treatments to clients so a tailored treatment plan can be offered. “The ability to sculpt a client’s face is very satisfying. From enhancing lips to liquid face lifts, the use of fillers, collagen stimulants, resurfacing and antioxidants can change a client’s life and make them more confident and happier,” says Dawn. “Having worked from home for two years I have decided it’s time to open a clinic specialising in advance clinical treatments. I will be available at the clinic five days per week and one day I will continue to work for a leading private hospital.” “In the New Year the clinic will also be providing therapists for clinical hypnotherapy, reiki, chiropody, permanent makeup and teeth whitening. “Give me a call at the clinic or visit the website to find out more about what we have to offer.”

Have a happy family Christmas Dr Bridget established One Life-Life Coaching in 2009 after working as a GP in South Wales for 24 years. Having spent the majority of her time as a GP supporting families and individuals through a variety of challenges, and also experiencing her own family challenges, Bridget is now living her life to the full and is supporting others to do the same. Her ethos is ‘You only have one life’ and her aim is to help clients live it to the full. Bridget is now a Certified Master Practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Time Line Therapy and Hypnosis. This means that she has the skills to help clients overcome issues in the past and get whatever they want out of life in the future. And people are having amazing results!

She decided to write Top 10 Tips for a Happy Family Christmas as this can be a time that people find stressful and a time when families can fall out. She believes that prevention is the best cure!

Top 10 Tips for a Happy Family Christmas 1. Start planning now – buy yourself a nice journal and keep notes. 2. Visualise what Christmas day will be for you. Write your vision in lots of detail in your book, look at it every day and it will happen! How will you know you have had a good Christmas when you wake up the day after? 3. Understand that others may have different and equally valid expectations based on their own experiences. 4. Practise keeping calm and give feedback based on how things make you FEEL. 5. Set your budget – creative and memorable presents needn’t cost much.

‘You only have one life – let me help you live it!’ 6. Think positively so that positive things happen. Catch anything negative and turn them into positives in your journal. Then practise – it feels much better! 7. Manage your time in a structured way. Write a list of what you need to achieve before Christmas, then for each week and then prioritise tasks each day. Do the things that will make the most difference to you first! 8. Give others things to do. It doesn’t have to be you that does everything and it keeps everyone involved! 9. Find time for yourself. If you notice you are feeling stressed, find a way of relaxing. You deserve it! Finally, if you are still dreading the day, ring Dr Bridget to book some support. Special ‘Prepare for Christmas’ offer Dr Bridget is offering 10% off three sessions for the first 10 people to contact her on 07973 635 102 More tips will be posted on www.onelife-lifecoaching.co.uk over the next few weeks, so sign up on the website to receive them.

Penarth Men’s Hockey Club Exciting times for hockey

Back to back promotions and a rejuvenated second XI mean Penarth Hockey Club are on the up. With just four games played in the new season, Penarth Hockey Club could be forgiven for feeling a little optimistic for the future. As the county’s only team, the club with a long history of producing top level

young talent has fallen on hard times in recent years and has struggled to bring junior players through in the same numbers as before.

another two wins and a draw to top the league, their fast and direct playing style and fitness regularly overcoming opposing teams.

But now, a short time into this new season, there are reasons to be cheerful. The men’s first team has achieved two successive promotions and now plays in the sixth tier of UK hockey. They started the season with a resounding 8-2 victory away to established Cirencester and have collected

Hoping to gain a third successive promotion, captain Richard Baker is confident they can achieve it. “We’ve started the season really well and we’ve developed a winning mentality. We take the field with lots of confidence and I think that shows in the way we play the game,” he says.

The second XI have had a torrid time over the last couple of years, struggling through a lack of players and over-reliance on youngsters. They hope to have settled in the South Wales Division 3 and, having opened the season with three wins in their first three games, are hoping to rebound back to Division 2. Matt Birch, captain of the team, is delighted with the number of younger players starting to feature and is hoping more success this season will mean more players coming to the club. There is plenty of work still to do though, and playing home games out of Barry Sports Centre make it difficult to build a club ethos and attract investment into the side, something the players are trying their utmost to do. More spectators and more sponsorship money are important for the long-term success of the club. Home games start every Saturday afternoon at 12:30pm and both teams would welcome an increase in attendance, boosting

the numbers from the regular supporters. There are also plenty of sponsorship opportunities: the club is happy for people to sponsor kit, or match moments such as goals, wins or points. The Star at Dinas Powys is currently a supporter of the club and home to post-match food and drinks, while David Baker & Company sponsor the team’s goals scored.

over Europe, to playing men’s first team hockey and taking away trips to places such as Chippenham, Bath, Bristol and Cirencester every week, there are more opportunities in hockey than in almost any other sport,” says Richard Baker.

If you’d like to find out more, why not head to training (7:15pm on Wednesday nights, 6:15pm for juniors), matches (generally 12:30pm every Saturday) or visit www. penarthhockeyclub.com. Penarth Hockey Club play at the highest level of almost any club in Penarth, and hockey is a fun, exciting, fast, physical yet accessible sport that anyone can enjoy. For juniors, there is a realistic chance of playing for your country at junior age groups and progressing further in the sport. “It’s a sport that is well worth considering. Hello Everyone We are well and truly into the autumn/ winter season and the dark evenings are definitely with us but at Ginger’s there is lots of colour and cheer to see us through the winter and the festive party season.

The photos on this page are highlighting some of the coats and accessories that we now have in the shop. Some of my favourites are evening clutch bags with lace to the front and a satin finish to the back – these smart bags are an elegant accessory when you go out for any special occasion. The other little bags are velvet silk clutches with beautiful bows by Lua. We have a range of velvet items which can be made into sets for Christmas Gifts in an array of colours with jewellery to match, well worth looking at. Christine and I are wearing a couple of lovely little jackets and coats by Lindl that we have introduced this season; they enhance our collection of waterproof rainwear coats by Jack Murphy and Target Dry.

I mentioned in the last issue that we were putting on a fashion show for one of the fundraising committees for Marie Curie Holm Towers, well it was a great night and £1200 was raised, so thanks to everyone who came along. On Sunday 27 November the lights are going on in Penarth and we will be open that day from 11am to 4pm. Why not come along for some sherry and mince pies and do some Christmas shopping! Assuring you always of a warm welcome Kind regards from Cathy and ‘the team’

The little black dress is always popular and we have a number of designs to offer as well as a lovely selection of Chianti evening wear. On top of all this we have some reasonable evening tops to take you for a night out without breaking the bank! Finally there is a varied choice of knits in the form of coloured jumpers, waistcoats, and ponchos to keep the winter cold at bay.
