Q&A Penarth View spoke to Jane Soltys, Pharmacist at Washington Pharmacy, and asked her some key seasonal questions about health and beauty.
Q. I have very dry, chapped skin after the recent cold winter weather - can you offer any remedies?
A. Yes, we have a range of products that can help. Our Apicare range of Manuka honey products have natural healing properties. For example, the Very Hardworkers Hand Creme, targets dry damaged skin and cracked knuckles and is also ideal for elbows, knees and heels.
Q. I feel very low at this time of year and suffer from recurring colds. Is there something I can take to get me over my winter blues and boost my immune system? A. We have a complete range of vitamins, minerals and tonics that can help you through the end of winter. In addition we stock a range of pro-biotics which can help boost the immune system and promote healing. Make sure as well that you are eating a balanced diet and drinking enough water. Exercise will help you feel better too, even if it’s just a short walk to the shops.
Q. I am going into hospital next week can I talk to someone about my medicines when I am discharged?
A. Yes, we now offer a medicine discharge service for patients who have recently been transferred between different care settings such as hospital to home. This will hopefully lead to a reduction in medication errors and unwanted side effects. We interview the patient or carer on discharge and check that their medicines prescribed in hospital match up with the GP’s prescription. In addition, we check how the patient is using their medication to reduce any problems they may have.

Q. My feet are very painful and extremely uncared for after being stuck in boots all winter - do you offer any products or treatments? A. We have a range of products specifically for the feet. Flexitol Heel Balm and CCS cream are both great moisturisers. In addition we have a chiropodist who runs twice weekly clinics from our new treatment room. A 30 minute treatment to remove your hard skin and corns can make a huge difference to your foot health and comfort.

Penarth Pavilion Project
Countdown begins for residents impatiently waiting for their Penarth Pavilion to re-open.
A
s contractors moved in last month to haul away the debris of the past, members of the local group responsible for the restoration could celebrate that after 6 years they were on the home run. The Pavilion newsletter has gone back into production after a one year break, talented young volunteers are producing a bevy of material (like Michael Streeter’s superb interior model, Jordan de Claire’s film of the Pavilion and Rob Taylor’s atmospheric photographic series) and also have gathered stories of the Pavilion’s past over afternoon teas. BBC Radio Wales journalist Kaylee Thomas has embarked on a yearly diary of activities for broadcast, and young apprentices from Barry College’s Construction Dept were on-site last month gaining work experience with R & M Williams, a local firm on the job. This exciting £4 million project is led by Penarth Arts & Crafts Ltd (PACL), the charity that has since 1998 operated the town’s Washington Gallery and now won funds for the ambitious refurbishment and reopening from both public and private sources. The major sponsor Heritage Lottery Fund has approved £1.685 million the Vale of Glamorgan Council is contributing and £1,050,000 comes from Big Lottery/WAG and the Assembly’s Communities Facilities and Activities Programme. Grants have already arrived from the John Paul Getty Jnr Trust and the Foyle Foundation. The reactivated Pavilion will run formal and informal learning activities stressing the heritage and environmental features of the maritime location.

Penarth Pavilion Project
The mission to return the 1920’s building back to public use with innovative activities including cinema, cafes and restaurants and concert space is geared for all ages. Those who might still remember the wartime dances and big parties in the 1950s will find the Pavilion stocked with local histories - they will be encouraged to contribute their own stories. There will be mothers and children play mornings, school concerts, youth music performances and a curriculumlinked education programme. The project has had encouragement from the Earl of Plymouth Estate, contributing the space being used for the Pavilion Information Centre, opposite the building, which operates to show work and training opportunities that lie ahead. Please let us know if you’d like to be involved.
The design team is now in full operation, combining the talents of conservation architects Purcell Miller Triton, structural engineers Arup (Cardiff), and project manager Mott McDonald (Cardiff) making, with other specialist advisers, a strong professional team. With full construction works due to start in June for mid 2013 completion, a fund-raising drive will launch in the spring and involve local societies, schools and individuals. Another season of classical concerts and jazz nights at the Washington Gallery is planned, as well as a Fun Run around the town in summer. Well-known local residents have already pledged help - musical director Carlo Rizzo was an early patron and opera star Rebecca Evans promises to help take the project to the finishing line with a special performance.
Project director Maggie Knight said “ Both Admiral Insurance and Eversheds have representatives on our Board giving us outstanding additional skills required for the tasks ahead, and we are fortunate enough to have two well-known local architects as Trustees, Bryan Alcock and Maureen Kelly Owen. PACL would still like to hear from anyone who could make a special contribution to further strengthen the Board’s management of the project.”

mile’s Café is the latest addition to the bustling high street of Cornerswell Road.
Owned by Graham and Michele Gonthier, owners of Strandz Salon just across the road, Emile’s is managed by their daughter, Catherine, who along with a team of dedicated staff opened Emile’s to instant acclaim in December 2011. Emile’s is named after one of the most influential people in Michele’s life, her father-in-law, Emile (Gonthier), a Frenchman who after a stunningly heroic performance during the second World War when he was a member of the Free French Merchant Navy, was awarded the Croix de Guerre, the highest civilian commemoration available for the French people. Emile was married to a Welsh girl and had a huge passion for food and cooking, and was notorious among his family and friends for his love of gastronomy. With this in mind, Emile’s seemed like the natural choice for Michele and her family when it came to deciding on a name for their brand new Penarth Café. A preference applauded by Graham and his seven siblings. And so Emile’s was born and with it a bustling new Penarth café that has been doing a roaring trade in its first few months of opening.
Manager, Catherine Scott, is thrilled with the reception Emile’s has received and particularly pleased with their recent 5* Award from the Food Standards Agency, who stopped by for a spot check in January.

The client needed extra living space, wanting a chill out area but versatile space which children could utilise as games room. Space was limited to the rear of the property so a side extension was designed and planning permission was obtained. The Orangery features four pane sliding patio doors leading to the rear garden, picture window overlooking front elevation and beautiful lantern roof, all in a mahogany finish to match the existing house. Our clients were delighted with the new addition. They now use the space to entertain, relax and at one time even used it as a snooker room! Dean who runs Vale Orangeries with wife Leanne explains “It’s great to re-visit our Orangeries and see how they have made such a difference to our client’s day to day living, and it’s lovely to catch up too.
