Welcome to the new Penarth View magazine and our first issue themed: Year Of The Sea. We would like to thank everyone who has welcomed and supported us in our new venture so far. We’ve had an absolute blast over the last three months, getting to know some of the amazing people and businesses here in our brilliant sea-side town. With a new map, gift spreads and featured articles, we’ve made it easier to #ShopPenarth and #SupportLocal, finding independent businesses who offer the best our town has to offer. We’ve also packed in more content, so keep your always free copy on your coffee table this summer, turn the world off, relax, and escape with us. You can read about Penarth’s Summer Festival on page 46, what legacy the Volvo Ocean Race has left on page 26, the amazing volunteers at the RNLI station on page 72, an interview with the director of Ffotogallery on 64, and much more. You may notice that we’ve cut the amount of advertising and introduced a sponsorship program to help us deliver more high-quality content to our readers. We’ve also launched our new website, full of extended print articles for those who want more, and prefer a quick read using a smartphone on the commute to work. We’re super proud to be in a position to celebrate and shout about the great events, people and community in this magazine. Our vision is to provide Penarth with a platform both in print and online for everyone to find out what’s going on in and around Penarth. So, if you have something to tell us or you’d like to work with us, get in touch or pop into our new studio on Cornerswell Road. Mornings normally include cake! Lastly, keep an eye out for special Penarth View reader offers, support your local businesses and enjoy what Penarth has to offer this summer. Now, where’s the sangria & Pimms?!

Brush the seabass with oil and sprinkle on the sea salt. Cook on a hot griddle (or pan) for 2 minutes on each side. Leave to one side.

In a separate pan, stir-fry the spinach leaves in a little olive oil to wilt them.
/ 7
Serve the seabass on a bed of the risotto, with the wilted spinach on one side. Add a little chopped parsley, and perhaps some balsamic glaze if desired.

Biscoff Blondies
/
SERVES 16 PREPARATION TIME: 20 MINUTES COOKING TIME: 25-30 MINUTES
by Charlotte, Lily’s Bake Box 225g unsalted butter chopped into cubes, plus a little for greasing 200g white chocolate chips 175g plain flour ½ tsp baking powder 200g soft light brown sugar 100g golden caster sugar 3 large eggs 2 tsp vanilla paste ½ packet Lotus biscuits ½ jar Lotus Biscoff spread
/ /
/ /
/
Grease and line a tray bake tin and preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. 2 Line the bottom of the baking tray with the half packet of Lotus biscuits. 3 Over a gently simmering saucepan, melt the butter and a 100g of the white chocolate chips. Make sure it doesn’t burn. Once melted put to one side to cool for 15 minutes. 4 In a separate bowl, combine the flour and baking powder with a pinch of salt. 5 Place the sugar and eggs in a large bowl and whisk until the mixture becomes thick and foamy. The mixture will leave a trail on top for a few seconds and that’s when you know it’s ready. 6 To the sugar and egg mixture add two heaped spoonfuls of the Biscoff spread and whisk in. 7 Add the vanilla to the melted chocolate and butter – it will have separated so give it a good stir. Add that to the sugar and egg mixture. Fold with a spatula until all fully combined. 8 Sieve in the flour mixture and fold until combined then add in the rest of the chocolate drops. 9 Pour into the tin and spread evenly. Dollop the Biscoff spread over the top randomly and as much as you like. Then crumble a couple of the biscuits on top. 10 Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean with a few crumbs on. Leave to cool in the baking tin then cut into squares. Enjoy!

A SOMMERIN WELCOME Cooking good quality food has always been part of James Sommerin’s family. With passion and inspiration passed down from his grandmother, James is now doing the same with his daughter joining him in the kitchen. James and his wife Louise invite you to dine with them for a Michelin star experience where you’ll taste only the best quality ingredients that are locally sourced where possible. However, it doesn’t end there. The family affair continues with members of James and Louise’s family who work in the Michelin star restaurant and offer an impeccable dining experience right at the heart of Penarth’s Esplanade. WILLMORE’S 1938
Family-owned and family-run, Willmore’s 1938 offers classic comfort food with a contemporary twist, as well as strong coffee, always perfectly served. A wide selection of beers, lagers, wines and spirits makes Willmore’s 1938 a great choice for weekend evening dining. With Charlotte and Matt at the helm, there’s always a friendly welcome too! 18
www.penarthview.co.uk
Having been open for over 14 months, Willmore’s 1938 continues in its fashion of serving good home-cooked food using local ingredients in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Over the Summer months, the venue will also be opening for weekend evening dining on Fridays and Saturdays. Add in the delicious Sunday lunches (we know, we’ve had the pleasure), pop-up taster nights and live music, Willmore’s 1938 is a venue to check out.
THE STORY OF WILLMORE’S 1938 ACTUALLY TAKES US BACK EIGHTY YEARS... From London, the Willmore brothers chose Penarth to bring their dream of opening a chain of cinemas to life. In 1938, the Washington Luxury Cinema opened, creating a buzz of excitement. With this 1,300 seater cinema, the brothers made their mark and brought an air of elegance to the town, bringing sophistication with the world of film. Willmore’s is located in the same venue. The interior of Willmore’s 1938 itself is inspired by thirties trends, and even features a unique poster wall, a hand-painted mural as well as choice cinematographic apparatus.

ADDICTED TO TECH
We’re not the type of people to try a detox of any kind but, we started to recognise how much technology had crept into our day to day lives.
Words by Will Summers, Penarth View Editor As new editors of Penarth View, we thought let’s try a detox to see if it changes our mindset. So, 7pm Friday evening, our phones go off until 7pm Sunday evening. This, added with a mini break in West Wales, sounded like the perfect getaway to recharge the batteries. A digital detox. For two men approaching 30 (at an alarming rate) the idea of turning off our alarm clock, watch, news machine, satnav, on-demand TV device and various social media apps initially made us twitch with dread. What memes and conversations will we miss out on in our social groups? How will I tell the time? What if an important work email comes through? What if there is an emergency? We looked back at this internal dialogue and thought so what?! 22
Turning your tech off, even for a short time, proves how much technology has made an imprint on our daily lives. We’re addicted! Our phones have subconsciously injected an innate need to know what’s going on in the world right now, or indeed sharing what’s going on with us with the world right now. There were some unexpected results from going ‘tech coldturkey’. The most noticeable being the physical reaction to reach down into our right pockets to find it empty! (well apart from an old receipt and emergency bag for our Cairn Terrier, Winston). Although this happened a few times over the weekend, every time we tried to seek out our mobile phones to fill a lull, we found ourselves feeling pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t there.
www.penarthview.co.uk
WELLBEING / SPONSORED BY
What was more unexpected, was the mental freedom given by not being tied to our phone. It was liberating, walking with a straight back and neck for starters! Seeing what was actually in front of us, in full 360˚, high definition, rather than on a 6-inch screen (which I’m sure is the reason for my failing eyesight). Being tech-free lifted what was happening miles away and made us see what was only one mile in front of us: sea, fresh air and Winston showing off his new hair cut. We spent the weekend in Pembrokeshire, but that shouldn’t mean that we have to go away to cut the ‘tech tie’. Those who have been to Pembrokeshire know that it’s a beautiful part of the world. We didn’t want to leave, feeling lighter, relaxed, with a recharged battery by the time Sunday afternoon meandered its way around. With technology gone, good conversation, food and drink in award-winning Tenby restaurants and books with interludes of board games (John cheated) were the best tech-addiction antidote. Whilst technology plays such an important part in our lives, it also fosters a reaction to only show the best of ourselves to the world, build up a personal brand, and compare ourselves with others, constantly (47 times a day according to a new app I downloaded). Having a break, talking to people and looking beyond the screen has given my head more space than I can remember having – eureka! This is what mental wellbeing and mindfulness starts with. Dr Griffiths holds a PhD in Chemistry, studied at Imperial College London, has 30 years’ experience in both state and independent schools and is currently Principal of Westbourne School in Penarth.
“….the school’s senior leadership team have a strong, clear vision that they share exceptionally well….”
Excellent, excellent, excellent, excellent and .....excellent Academic excellence in a global society; with progress for all I was once told that it is embarrassing to be reminded how fantastic you are - do not believe anyone who says this. The recent ESTYN inspection report for Westbourne School stated Excellent in all FIVE key questions (Standards, Well-Being, Teaching & Learning, Care and Leadership) and reminded me in every sentence how high our standards are – and I did not feel at all bashful. When all your efforts are both recognised and applauded by complete strangers, it is not only official confirmation that you are doing the right things, but an incredibly secure platform on which the entire school community can build and move forward further. The standards of all our pupils, from Nursery to the Sixth form, have always been outstanding - in literacy, numeracy, GCSEs and IB Diploma: “The standards achieved by pupils at Westbourne School are extremely high and pupils with English as an additional language make particularly good progress” “In 2 0 1 7 , all pupils in the sixth form passed the IB Diploma. Of these, 8 0 % achieved above the world average of 3 0 points while 1 3 % achieved more than 4 0 points.” However, it was particularly pleasing that the school’s long-term planning and implementation was recognised as exemplar. We pride ourselves on ensuring that every pupil’s needs are met and that the entire school community has confidence in the
leadership. Although only appointed as Principal in November 2 0 1 7 , the inspectors quickly evidenced how meticulous planning over a number of years had ensured a completely smooth transition between past and present senior roles within the school: “Estyn will invite the school to prepare case studies on its work in relation to the support provided to pupils with English as an additional language and the approach to succession planning taken by the proprietor to ensure a smooth transition in the change to the school’s senior leadership” We believe that this statement spoke volumes for the direction and decisions the school has made at every level in recent years – and at the same time understand the incredibly high standards we have achieved in attaining Excellent in every category. For me personally, this is an excellent start to my tenure as school Principal, and I want this to be the opportunity for us all at Westbourne to set ourselves even higher targets for the future. Standards in education are getting higher, and I know it will be even harder in five or six years to achieve such a significant accolade; but I believe in everything we have done, are doing …… and will do in the future at this Excellent school. James Blake/Volvo Ocean Race Leg 8 from Itajai to Newport, day 15 on board Turn the Tide on Plastic. 07 May, 2018
LIVING THE LEGACY With the Volvo Ocean Race kicking off our summer season at Cardiff’s stopover in May, the Penarth View team have stepped outside of their comfort zone and tried out some of the adventures available on the water. For someone who is terrified of not being able to plant his feet, firmly on the floor, it was great to try out something I never thought I could do! Words by Will Summers, Penarth View Editor Speaking to Phil Johnston (the On-shore Operations Manager for the Turn The Tide On Plastic team), it’s clear to see that the sailors’ and skippers’ skills are tested to the limits in a race that throws them into all different types of environments. Inspired by the crews sailing around the world, we thought we’d try and get out on the water ourselves. Using local watersports clubs and groups we have on our doorstep, it’s easy for everyone to get involved. Beautifully located on the coast of the Bristol Channel, Penarth is spoilt for choice with clubs based in the town, marina and a short journey to Cardiff Bay. If sailing, rowing, water skiing or stand-up paddleboarding is something you’d like to try, get in touch with some of the friendly local groups, who will gladly welcome you on their next adventure:
26
YACHTING Established in 1880 and based on Penarth Esplanade, Penarth Yacht Club offer sail training for adults from May through to September. Also, part of the Penarth Rowing Club, both groups provide training and opportunities for everyone over 13 to get out into the sea. Ask about their Annual Regatta and get involved! We can also recommend their charity night quizzes.
STAND UP PADDLE BOARDING Stand-up paddleboarding is a relatively new water sport and is a must for those who like something different. SUP Wales and Puravida provide taster courses in and around Penarth to see if you can catch the SUP bug. You can hire all the gear needed to give it a try, and even get involved with the many adventures that are organised. We teamed up with the group for SUP Club litter pick during the Volvo stopover. Check out our Facebook page for more details.

CANAL LIFE
Earlier this year in April, we took to the motorways of the eighteenth century, Britain’s network of canals, to enjoy the perfect boating experience.
30
www.penarthview.co.uk
They say canal boat cruising is one of the most enjoyable, peaceful holidays available. With no lengthy queues at the airport and no transfer coaches to a hotel, we chose to leave the stress of long distance travel and decided to holiday in the UK. We fell in love with this kind of mini-break a few years ago, and for our next voyage adventure, we wanted to explore some of Britain’s more urban canal network. So, like the light at the end of a canal tunnel, Birmingham beckoned us.
new canal network to Wolverhampton. After leaving the centre of Birmingham, the landscape became an interesting patchwork of buildings that had turned their backs on the canal – oftentimes punctuated by new developments that put the canal at centre stage. Having left the urban sprawl, there is nothing better than trundling along beautiful open countryside at four miles an hour. This is a different perspective from which to explore Britain, casually stopping for a bite to eat at one of many canal-side pubs.
The city has one of the most intricate canal networks in the world, where colourful boats and vernacular architecture rub shoulders with glass skyscrapers and a cosmopolitan nightlife. It’s here that the canals, the railways and the M5 motorway weave their way through the West Midlands.
Whether you’ve piloted a canal boat before, or you’re venturing out for the first time, if you want to relax and take in the local surroundings, this is the only way to travel. As the captain of your own boat, you decide where to stop and what to see. Perhaps a spot of fishing, visiting an attraction or, of course, a stop for a traditional pub lunch.
With our boat full of comfort food and other goodies to enjoy on board, we powered out of the wharf at Tardebigge, a little south of Birmingham. Our journey took us through the city and further north west via Thomas Telford’s
Boats can normally take between two and 10 people, so it’s equally great for time with the family, a romantic getaway or a trip with friends. We can guarantee you’ll definitely remember it.

SAPPHIRE WATERS IN CROATIA Ask me where my favourite place in the world is (after Penarth!) and I’ll answer you in a heartbeat: Croatia. I’m smitten with the crystal clear sapphire sea, the endless beautiful islands and the delicious seafood, wine and gelato. I dream of the summery background hum of cicada tree crickets and the smell of hot crunchy pine needles and sea salt carried on a warm breeze. And I admire the humour and warmth of the infinitely welcoming Croatian people. The 1,100 mile stretch of coast and more than 1,000 islands mean there are a surprising variety of places to choose from when planning a visit. Despite the country growing increasingly popular with tourists in the past few years, this hasn’t faded its charm and appeal.
I have worked in travel all my life as an adventure tour leader and now as an independent Travel Counsellor. I provide friendly, professional travel advice and trusted tailor made holidays. I live in Penarth with my son and I love running, yoga and travel (of course).

Dubrovnik, Croatia iStock
To start with you need to visit Dubrovnik, the Pearl of the Adriatic, famous for its imposing medieval stone walls that encircle the old city surrounded by dazzlingly clear blue water. Walk on top of the entire 1,940m wall diameter for the dizzy drops and heights, and take a sea kayak out at sunset for the ultimate view of this majestic, proud city. The city of Split is home to waterfront Roman Emperor Diocletian’s Palace and has a great selection of bars, cafes and boutique shops, all set within the ancient, crumbling palace walls and surrounding streets. From Split you can jump on a ferry to many of the Dalmatian islands but don’t pass through too quickly as you’ll be disappointed you didn’t stay longer. Towns don’t come much prettier than picture-perfect Trogir, a small town with a labyrinthine network of narrow cobbled streets worn smooth by centuries of pedestrians. Venetian stone buildings hide shaded courtyards blossoming with flowers; it is a town with soul. At sunset the warm stone paved quay is lined with bobbing wooden boats, artisans, performers, and people simply strolling along with an ice cream in their hand, watching the world go by; a typical Croatian scene. If you fall in love with Croatia’s natural beauty, then you’re in good company. According to legend, Odysseus was enchanted after being shipwrecked here, and stayed for 7 years. See where he livedon peaceful Mljet Island where
the National Park has a network of spellbinding pine-scented forest trails you can explore by foot or bike. There are also two vividly blue saltwater lakes perfect for swimming or kayaking. My favourite National Park is at Plitviče Lakes where hundreds of waterfalls cascade into 16 sparkling azure interconnecting lakes. There’s nowhere else on earth like this; it should be on everyone’s bucket list. The island town of Hvar is Croatia’s most notorious hotspot, with a marina that rivals St Tropez’s glitz and glamour. Holidaymakers rub shoulders with celebrities while yachters mingle with in-the-know backpackers. Don’t be put off by this if you’re after some serious culture and history as the town is steeped in both. Cafes and restaurants spill out onto the largest piazza in Croatia and you can instantly see the town’s appeal in its jumble of pretty narrow streets, its fortress and dazzling architecture. Nearb, sleepy Korcula has less international notoriety but ample picturesque charm and is known as ‘mini Dubrovnik’. When to go? The weather is typically Mediterranean with peak visitor numbers between March and September. I like June the best for the spring flowers, endless sunshine and marketplaces selling the best cherries you’ll ever taste. Croatia is less than a 3 hour flight away, so it’s perfect for short breaks or longer.

BAY ISLAND VOYAGES
Great for special occasions groups and families, we definitely recommend a trip wit h the Bay Island Voyages crew
With Penarth View’s Year of the Sea themed issue this summer, Ed and the crew at Bay Island Voyages kindly invited us aboard to view the coastal delights from Cardiff Bay. Keen to show readers how easy it is to get on the water this summer, we jumped at the chance to climb aboard and embark on an adventure that’s a hop, skip and a jump from home.
34
www.penarthview.co.uk
With a selection of trips that range from 15 minute Bay Blasts to 1.5 hour Coastal Trips, Ed and the team welcome you to see Penarth, Cardiff and the Bristol Channel from a completely different perspective. Each trip certainly gets the adrenaline pumping, with fast turns, and figure-of-eight patterns left behind in waves. After a safety briefing, it doesn’t take long for the 9 meter long RIB to pick up speed within the Bay – brilliant for those who like a thrill ride. Snaking around the freshwater lake and riding the waves is a great way of experiencing what the waters around Penarth have to offer. Going through the Cardiff Bay Barrage locks, Ed and the crew give you a full tour experience, entertaining you with facts, anecdotes and stories about the barrage’s history and the surrounding areas, making reference to the people in the background who keep everything ticking along. Once out of the locks, the skyline and shore open up in the world’s secondbiggest tidal range, giving full views of Wales’ beautiful coastline. With Penarth Esplanade being one of our favourite places to take the dog for a stroll, it was wonderful surveying Penarth and its pier from a different angle. Whilst in the channel you can also see neighbouring Weston-super-Mare’s pier in the distance, with Flat Holm and Steep Holm in between – our next stop.
Traveling at high speeds allows you to take in the expanse of water that charges its way in and out every day, rising and falling on average around 10 meters. The boat skims across the water making the islands look like optical illusions as they get larger and more vivid the closer you get. The Coastal Trip is great for people interested in the history and architecture of the islands and its many uses over the last century. If you want more, then the Flat Holm visit option is for you. You’ll hear stories of the gun turrets used in the World Wars, as well as the history of the buildings that provided a place of shelter for those with illhealth. The tour is full of golden nuggets of information that you can impress your friends with after your adventure. You even get a chance to visit the most Southerly pub in Wales the The Gull and Leek.

MAUVE OVER MAGNOLIA Three of our contributors give their take on Pantone’s Colour of the Year... MIFFY SHAW INTERIORS A dramatic and intense colour that’s not for the shrinking violets out there! For the brave, add violet by block-colouring a stair runner or a luxurious velvet sofa. For those that want to dip their toes into the latest purple craze, try accessories and soft furnishings such as cushions and throws that can easily be updated with a new look. I personally like to add touches of purple with plants and flowers using vintage cups and saucers with pansies, violets or some beautiful grape hyacinths. Whether you have a deep passion for purple or you just want to add a hint, there are plenty of ways to add some Ultra Violet into your home.

YOUR SPACE LIVING People are often quite conservative with their kitchen cabinetry and worktops. The reason is the cabinets and worktops make up the bulk of the cost and that’s too risky. But all is not lost. Take a look at this fabulous contemporary kitchen from a lovely home not too far from Penarth town centre. Lava black and champagne cabinets mixed with violet painted glass panels. Stunning!
CHALKHOUSE Ultra violet is vibrant, energising, the colour of royalty, of luscious figs in the sunshine, of beautiful French macarons. This isn’t your safe, boring, colourless colour. It’s definitely not for the faint hearted amongst you but if you have a crazy side, a desire to shock, and don’t care what the neighbours think then this just may be the colour of your year too. Start with a dash of concrete grey, toss in a handful of zinging lime green and yellow, finish off with a sprinkling of dark wood, and you have got yourself some serious wow factor.

Whitewashing the brick face kept it from looking heavy Photography by Chalkhouse Interiors
VISION AND STYLE
Ceri Hill, Design Director at Chalkhouse Interiors Ltd, explains how an outdated terraced house in Penarth was transformed into a beautiful family home. Our client extended the back of the house to create a large kitchen, separate utility room and downstairs shower room. Major structural work in the house also opened up the attic to create another bedroom and bathroom for guests. Her main priority was to create a beautiful, open-plan kitchen with an island, and sufficient space for a large dining table. 38
The existing kitchen was very small so the client knocked through into the dining room, which had an ordinary looking chimney breast. When the old render was removed, it exposed a beautiful brick structure with an arched opening. This created a real feature in the room so the kitchen was designed around it as a focal point.
www.penarthview.co.uk
Whitewashing the brick face kept it from looking heavy and industrial, and fitted in beautifully with the light and airy theme of the kitchen and dining area. Opening up the back of the house with full height glazed doors flooded the space with light and gave beautiful views over the newly landscaped courtyard garden. The cabinetry was painted in a pale ‘greige’ (Farrow and Ball’s Cornforth White) to keep everything as light as possible with all the furniture having pale maple interiors in keeping with the Scandinavian theme. The island includes a neat undermount sink with integrated dishwasher and a hidden, built-in microwave, tucked out of sight at the end facing the chimney breast. Only one wall cupboard was fitted in the kitchen, with two glazed doors to display the client’s collection of glasses. This was balanced with a tall larder cupboard unit fitted in the other alcove to the left of the chimney breast. Although this cabinet was shallow, to allow enough space for the dining seating, it was fitted with bespoke wicker baskets for storing fresh vegetables and fruit. COME AND CHAT TO US SO THAT WE CAN HELP YOU CREATE THE KITCHEN OF YOUR DREAMS AS WELL.

COASTAL KITCHENS
It’s clear that Penarth’s coastal location has had a major influence on its residents’ interior styling decisions. The coastal kitchen remains as popular as ever. Words by Jo Buckerfield, Your Space Living Quite often, this look is achieved by using natural wood finishes and painting older cabinets in lighter shades. Unfortunately, all kitchens have a life span and, sooner or later, you’ll need to replace those creaking cabinets and stained worktops. Seeking out reclaimed furniture and materials can lead to amazing results. But it’s not all plain sailing. Reclaimed surfaces don’t offer any guarantees, can be difficult to maintain, and might lead to hygiene issues down the line. Another option would be to explore the modern kitchen route and benefit from the latest technology, guaranteed materials and beautifully crafted finishes. All it takes is a bit of thoughtful design and that’s where I come in. 40
COLOUR SCHEMES When it comes to coastal kitchen cabinetry, white and light is the way to go. If you choose pure white, you can contrast with strong blues to add the nautical feel. And wherever there’s blue, you can combine with splashes of complementary yellow. Adding vibrant green plants, such as aloe vera, snake and cactus, will complete a palette that will forever remind you of warm sunny days at the beach!
Be forever reminded of warm sunny days at the beach www.penarthview.co.uk
DOOR STYLE The modern shaker door is an ideal choice. This simple design works well in any home. The shaker is a classic door that never goes out of style, so you’ll be future-proofing your property at the same time. As always, be sure to choose a quality manufacturer and go for hardwoods such as oak and ash with a luxurious painted finish.
WORKTOPS Wooden worktops are popular in many coastal kitchens. But they can have issues with maintenance, staining and hygiene. If you want a hassle free option, why not consider a modern laminate in a faux wood effect. There are some fantastic products on the market that look and feel completely authentic. If you’re after a stone worktop, then look no further than the Dekton® Industrial Collection. This stunning range of worktops by Cosentino® offer stylishly distressed patterns on one of the toughest surfaces available. Trilium is my personal favourite, which would add a modern twist to an amazing Coastal Kitchen.

Words by Niamh Mannion for Penarth View
During July, Penarth will be buzzing with events that any selfrespecting Penarthian has to be seen at! It’s going to be a party in Penarth and we can’t wait to see you out and about! A PENARTH TRADITION Penarth Summer Festival has been a staple of summer in Penarth since 1965. Back in the 60s it was Penarth Holiday Week! Generations of Penarth residents have grown up with the Penarth Summer Festival! It wouldn’t be summer in Penarth without it!
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM 2018? Penarth Summer Festival kicks off with the famous Downhill Derby, with street food, music and a firework display later in the evening. In a change from previous years, the fireworks will be on the opening evening, not acting as the finale.
As part of Carnival Weekender, the Downhill Derby will be back for its 8th year! Since 2010, the Downhill Derby has proved to be a thrilling feature of the festival. All in all, twenty-five carts will race it down Cliff Hill on the seafront over ramps, jumps and (of course!) through a car wash! Downhill Derby aims to bring thrill seeking and community together. Carts of all ability as well as drivers of any ages will be racing together in the spirit of community in Penarth. If you’re feeling brave, you can enter online for a £5 entry fee – all are welcome! Be sure to make it down to the seafront on Saturday 14th from 2-5pm to catch the Downhill Derby!
OUR VERY OWN NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL! The unmissable Carnival Weekender will run from Saturday 14th until Sunday 15th. The 2018 Carnival Weekender is jampacked full of good stuff for you to enjoy!

DRINKS BY THE SEA Hat by Joules £26 from John Lewis
Whether you are having a staycation or a vacation, it is always nice to buy some new holiday clothes to feel like you are escaping the norm. Ultra violet is Pantone’s Colour of the Year. However, we have seen lots of this toned-right-down-to-asofter-lilac colour, along with many other pastels available this season. Styling by Claire Jacklin Hair by A Brush With Beauty Photography by Alina Hibbert, University of South Wales.
I fell in love with this dress from Monsoon as soon as I saw it. Not only does it have flattering converging stripes around the bust area but it also has elongating stripes to help the wearer look taller and slimmer. The frill along the armholes softens the look and adds femininity, but it’s the ice cream colours that I loved the most!

Pastels are not always easy to wear, especially if you have darker skin, in which case stronger, bolder colours may suit you better. In this case it’s best to opt for a neutral colour such as navy (which pretty much suits everyone) and add the lighter colours through accessories. For minimal holiday packing, accessories are key as they can change the look from day to evening with minimal effort. This beautiful floaty chiffon dress in navy (above middle) would be perfect for dressing up on a hot evening. The asymmetric hemline and the slash sleeves are great for keeping cool and adding interest. I have been massively drawn to yellow recently and these Karen Millen shoes caught my eye. I always love navy and yellow together!

Two-part stiletto sandals in lime by Karen Millen £135 from John Lewis
Indian summer clutch bag £36 by effortlesstradingco
Kelly Cocoon dress by Mint Velvet £109 from John Lewis Pom pom straw clutch bag £25 from my_new.wardrobe
Lilac pleated satin skirt £89 by Mint Velvet
If you don’t feel like wearing a mixture of pastel tones together you can always opt for one block colour, and I particularly love the pleated satin skirt in lilac by Mint Velvet (above left).
As a supporter of small brands, I wanted to feature some new labels that have fun products and deserve a big shout out. The pom pom straw clutch featured is by my_new.wardrobe and is a real wow piece that adds to the evening look perfectly. The star basket bag by tobe_designs is roomy and would be fantastic for the beach or an evening of shopping and strolling along the promenade. However, my all time favourite has to be the Indian summer tassel clutch by effortlesstradingco. Do check it out online, as it is truly stunning and makes for a great day or evening accessory, which I am so pleased to have been gifted. I will also be showing off the gorgeous watermelon clutch, also by effortlesstradingco, whilst on my holidays to Marbella this July. The problem is, once you find a new brand that you fall in love with, you seem to want to buy everything. I am literally about to press ‘Add to Basket’ on their beautiful grey print kaftan too. I do need a new cover-up so it may as well be one made from 100% cotton, ey?!

SUMMER BEAUTY TIPS Words by Amy Adams, A Brush With Beauty
I adore this time of year: the promise of summer on the breeze, coupled with a carefree mood. Sunshine gives us an instant boost, a ‘lit from within’ glow and a renewed and relaxed approach to life! My favourite things about the switch from winter to summer beauty are the lighter textures and fresh colours that give the long-awaited ‘lift’ after a (very) long winter. summer skin glows with health and can be showed off without layers of caked-on makeup, sadly so reminiscent of current trend. Many beauty brands embrace this season by ‘going bare’ with colour and texture and the onset of summer draws inspiration from dreamy holiday destinations.
This year’s offerings immediately transport me to the shores of Capri, a place I visited years ago. Closer to home, my mind takes me to the beautiful shell-pink hues found within our coastlines, and the roof of the Pier Pavilion that shimmers with a dream-like palette of blues, greys and pinks. This season at A Brush with Beauty, we have curated beauty collections inspired by mother nature’s greatest offering: the sea. Why not pop in to see our collections, which include fabulous products like these featured below.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT DIAMOND
When met with the choice and variety of diamond rings on display, chances are you will be overwhelmed. But fear not, let Northern Star Jewellery help you make the right choice. They will discuss your requirements and help you select the right diamond. They are happy to order in a selection of diamonds for you to look at and choose from. You are always in safe hands with their diamond experts. 54
www.penarthview.co.uk
Here’s a little diamond knowledge they would like to share … DID YOU KNOW? There are universally agreed rules when buying diamonds. These are called The Four Cs. They are CUT, COLOUR, CLARITY and CARAT. All must be considered equally when comparing diamonds.
CUT The brilliance of a diamond depends heavily upon its cut. It is the angle and size of the cuts that dictate how light reflects and passes through the diamond, an effect known as “fire”. The cut also determines the shape of the diamond.
COLOUR Colourless diamonds are the most desirable as they allow the most refraction of light. Jewellers grade absolutely colourless diamonds with a “D”. The scale moves up to Z, and between these two extremes, diamonds will display subtle coloured tones.
CLARITY Diamonds are created under an immense amount of pressure, so it is no surprise that most diamonds have flaws. “Inclusions” are flaws such as air bubbles, cracks and non-diamond minerals found within the diamond. Because they are less common, diamonds with no or few inclusions are more highly valued and priced.
CARAT A carat is a unit of measurement and it is the unit used to weigh a diamond. One carat is equal to 0.2 grams.

NOW SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT
2017 performances by Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival
Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival celebrates the launch of its 36th Festival in 2018, now featuring eight separate productions to satisfy the cultural appetites of Wales’ theatre-goers.

Now the largest theatre festival of its kind in the UK, attracting over 14,000 visitors, the festival is offering eight productions to satisfy the cultural appetites of the Capital City and surrounding areas. Having been established at Dyffryn Gardens in 1983, the festival still maintains many of its original audience members from the Vale of Glamorgan, and Penarth in particular! Not least because its Marketing Officer, Amy Brooks, is a resident of Penarth, and she endeavours to ensure all Penarthians are kept informed of the brilliant theatrical treats in store each year.
“ The diverse and familiar programme of events we deliver still attracts so many of our original Vale of Glamorgan audience members, many of which have attended for over 30 years. Whether it’s Shakespeare you fancy, a spot of light entertainment or a kids’ musical for all the family, we’ve got it covered! Literally. One of our unique selling points is that, unlike most outdoor theatres, our audience enjoys the shows from a stand fully under cover with seating. ” Amy joined the festival as a performer in 2001 and has played a variety of roles from a Super Sheep in the family show, to Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It’s marketing the Festival that really inspires her, though.
Piano, flute, clarinet and music theory tutoring in Penarth. Each student is different, so my sessions are tailored to suit your needs. Some wish to sit examinations, some wish to hone skills and some like to play just for fun. If you’re interested in learning to play the piano, flute or clarinet, my first sessions are free and are typically during evenings or weekends.

“ I feel very passionate that this festival provides theatrical productions of the highest quality yet without the elitist price tag. Affordable theatre for everyone, in the heart of the city! ” She’ll be championing one production in particular this year, the comedy Dad’s Army, as she’s returning to her acting roots and playing Mrs Pike, mother of everyone’s favourite Mummy’s Boy, Private Pike. So why does this event in Cardiff attract so many people from Penarth? “The
Festival’s history is firmly rooted in the Vale. I think the people of Penarth enjoy a great night out, a bit of culture and affordable, fun theatre for their families. Also, I barely shut up about it!” So if it’s a great night out you’re looking for, pop over to Sophia Gardens this summer. There’s The Merchant Of Venice, Dad’s Army, Fiddler On The Roof, Seussical Jr and Hello Cabaret, to name but a few!

EISTEDDFOD FEVER HITS THE CITY

The National Eisteddfod of Wales (Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru) is one of Wales’ cultural highlights and is often considered one of the largest musical and poetry festivals in Europe. This summer it lands in Cardiff Bay and, as such, will be an urban and experimental festival. Organisers are using an exciting mix of the Bay’s iconic buildings and attractive temporary structures, tailoring different events for various spaces. This has allowed them to be ambitious and daring with some performances, whilst ensuring that the best resources are available for other shows. The friendly and welcoming atmosphere will be the same as every other year. Some of the many delights that will entice you to Roald Dahl Plass and the immediate surroundings are the musical, literary and theatrical performances in the Wales Millennium Centre, and Y Lle Celf, the art exhibition, will take place in the Senedd. Activities for learners will take place in Pierhead, and young people will take to the former home of the Doctor Who Experience. There will be science and technology exhibits, as well as more informal spaces for poetry reading, singing and acting.
And, of course, there’ll be over 100 stalls of all shapes and sizes around the Bay, as well as an exciting food village, all of which will promote and showcase the very best of Welsh produce. Penarth businesses will be making an appearance here, so do make sure you pop down. Highlights of the Eisteddfod are plentiful, and include the crowing and chairing ceremonies for poetry, as well as presenting the learners’ medal. Of course, with 2018 being the centenary of the end of World War One, this year’s Chairing of the Bard ceremony will be a poignant one. In 1917, Hedd Wyn (Ellis Humphrey Evans) was awarded the Chair for his ode Yr Arwr, The Hero. When the ceremony took place it was announced that the winning entry had been submitted under the pseudonym Fleur de Lys. After the trumpets had summoned the winner three times to stand forth from the audience, Archdruid Dyfed announced that he had been killed in action six weeks earlier. The winner’s chair was then draped in a black sheet. That year’s Eisteddfod is now referred to as Eisteddfod y Gadair Ddu, The Eisteddfod of the Black Chair. It’s certain that the 2018 festival will go down in history. Cardiff Bay will welcome up to 150,000 people. Make sure you’re one of them.
DETAILS The opening concert will take place on 3 August 2018 at the Wales Millennium Centre, and the festival will run in full 4-11 August. / www.eisteddfod.wales

Words by Lowri ap Robert for Penarth View You may love the Eisteddfod. You may be coolly indifferent towards it. But if you’re a business in Penarth, you really should be prepared for the reams of Eisteddfodgoers who will descend upon Penarth. We are, after all, a mere hop, skip and a jump away from Cardiff Bay. Belle Vue Park, Penarth Photo by Vale of Glamorgan Council
A LOOK BACK AT BELLE VUE PARK
Words by Martin Gossage, Penarth Civic Society and Karen Martin, Chair of Friends of Belle Vue Park With Music in the Park returning to Belle Vue Park this summer for its 10th consecutive year, we thought we’d take a look back through the archive to find out the history of this popular Penarth park. The park occupies the site of a former quarry, which produced some of the blue lias limestone used in local houses. The quarry was filled in at the turn of the century and used for grazing livestock. The ground would never settle to allow house building, so the council acquired the land and opened the park in 1914. It is named after the plant nursery and cottage previously sited on Albert Road. During WWII, most parks lost their fences to provide war materials. However, the Belle Vue pavilion was used as a warden’s hut and the original 1914 fencing was left in situ for security. That original fencing is still in place today.
The Friends of Belle Vue Park group made improvements over the years, including sculptures, new fencing, a new children’s playground and establishing the sloping play field. As part of the park’s 2014 centenary event, a new American-designed drinking fountain was unveiled, and a time-capsule was buried, due to be opened in 2064.
Music in the Park is a highlight of the Penarth calendar. Andrew, the festival’s Musical Organiser tells us a bit more about the beginnings of the festival
“ The festival began in 2008. It was very low-key and nothing like it is today. Each year it has grown. “ We had a very eclectic mix of entertainment in the early days. In 2008, The Snorklers headlined, as they did for the first few years. The line-up also included Jessica Morgan (daughter of Mary Hopkin and Tony Visconti), young band Endangered, opera singer Reisha Adams, and the Penarth Male Voice Choir. We even had an Elvis Presley impersonator. “ One highlight for me was when professional singer and guitarist Martyn Joseph, sang and played through the audience. There was a fantastic atmosphere. “ We are also a platform for younger performers to make a mark. We first saw Houdini Dax at Music in the Park, and last year they played at the Isle of White festival, under their new name, Monico Blonde! ”

A CHRONICLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY
Penarth View held an exclusive interview with Ffotogallery’s Director, David Drake and their Communications Officer, Phil Scully, to learn more about the gallery’s history, its thriving present, and exciting future. Words by Luisa da la Concha for Penarth View As soon as one heads out of the train station and walks towards Plymouth Road, a captivating construction emerges in the distance. It is quite difficult to ignore Turner House’s pink walls, and how they peculiarly contrast against its 1887 architecture, and it is even more challenging not to wonder what is going on inside. The 1970s were an exciting time for photography; the contrasting aspects of British society, and the quick urban growth that 64
transformed the country’s landscape gave emerging photographers a wide scope of stories to take inspiration from. In the middle of this fuss, the founders of Ffotogallery noticed that to be able to keep up with this fast-paced environment, Wales needed its own space dedicated to photography. In 1978, Ffotogallery first opened its doors in Cardiff, and it quickly became a stepping stone for emerging photographers, such as Martir Parr and David Hurn.

CREATIVE SECTION / SPONSORED BY For 55 years, Rowley’s have been selecting only the best jewellery, watches and gifts to grace the shelves of the store. The family currently behind Rowley’s the Jewellers are no strangers to the arts scene, and are proud to sponsor Penarth View’s Creative Penarth section. In 2003, Ffotogallery moved to Turner House, and since then, the gallery itself and Penarth’s community have mutually benefitted from this constantly evolving relationship. The gallery is always looking for new ways to transcend the walls of the medium. This means that they are not afraid of including the community and diverse visual elements, such as video installations, in their exhibitions. One of the projects developed under this idea was Penarth Heights, in which children from different schools were invited to tell the story of Billy Banks, allowing them to understand how creativity can have a social impact. Since its foundation, Ffotogallery has been creating a space that helps Walesbased photographers promote and develop their vision, while building up the country’s national and international prominence in photography. Looking back, they have achieved this and much more. As a celebration of their 40-year anniversary, Ffotogallery is currently holding a temporal exhibition, Chronicle, which looks back at the evolution of photography and how the gallery has played an essential part in it. 55 YEARS OF HERITAGE 1963 saw the sea freeze in Penarth for the first time in living memory. That year also saw the Rowley family open Rowley’s The Jewellers at 110 Glebe Street. Over 55 years, it became the go-to shop for wedding jewellery, anniversary and birthday gifts, and all jewellery repairs. Since 2004, the Aydin-Barberini family have continued in this tradition, with an added emphasis on traditional craftsmanship mixed with contemporary style. Rowley’s have a particular focus on Welsh designers and makers. THE SPIRIT OF PENARTH II Starting back in 1861 and reopened in 1980, Penarth’s RNLI lifeboat station has a rich history, attracting locals who volunteer and support the vital service for the community and those who need help at sea. With over 30 volunteers currently making up the crew and support staff that run the station, we had the chance to meet some of the wonderful people who give their time to help others in need, providing education and support to those who use the sea.
Words by Will Summers, Penarth View Editor Meeting Andy Berry, the station press officer, you get a feel for how the close-knit team are building strong relationships that turn into extended family members – important if you’re going to be working together in lifesaving situations! It was elating to 72
hear stories of crew members pulling together and how they all come from different backgrounds with different skillsets. Whilst the crew is important, you don’t have to go out to sea to help make a difference.
www.penarthview.co.uk
Talking to Andy and having a tour together with a school trip of 60 children (who were fascinated with everything they had seen and heard) shone a light on how great a task keeping the station running is. There are so many volunteers who work behind the scenes, such as shore preparation teams, lifeguards, senior officers, command and control officers, as well as those on the ground who are all fundraising, providing safety education for all ages and organising events to help spread the word of their V isit ou r we bsit e for recent FLOAT top tip s on sta yin g sa fe and Respect The a t sea this summe r. Water campaigns.
SPIRIT OF PENARTH II Coming soon, the lifeboat station will be celebrating a naming ceremony for its new D Class boat Spirit of Penarth II, of which the local community fundraised an amazing sum of £52,000. Talking to the volunteers, having the best equipment, designed and manufactured to minimise risk and provide safety for its crew is paramount. This is where volunteers like Andy and Caroline Eva really make a huge impact on organising fundraising events and raising awareness. With the station showing a dynamic community hub, bustling with a message of diversity, it’s great to be able to support the people behind it. Keep and eye out for the new safety initiatives programmes hitting the Vale of Glamorgan this summer. To get involved, you can check out the programme of events by visiting the RNLI Penarth lifeboat station website and our what’s on guide.

TURN THE TIDE ON PLASTIC Penarth’s businesses get behind an international Turn The Tide on Plastic campaign on a local level. Embracing the war on single-use plastic and promoting sustainable practices, we met some of Penarth’s business owners who are getting behind the message. Words by Will Summers, Penarth View Editor With the combined quest for #CleanSeas, Dee Caffari and the Volvo Ocean Race crew Turn the Tide on Plastic aim to change mindsets all over the globe resulting in a revolution on plastic use which has inspired people in Penarth to change their practices.
Lilypad the Florist has introduced
With Willmore’s 1938 replacing plastic straws with paper alternatives, and with Crêpe Escape finding compostable straws and cutlery, it’s clear to see that there are new alternatives to plastic use. There are also some businesses in Penarth that have practised sustainable methods, such as Windsor Fruit Stores who provide loose produce as well as Thompsons and David Lush butchers, who already provide much less packaging with their products than your supermarket equivalent.
The campaign has also led to business owners thinking about how they can re-use their waste more creatively. Along with switching to paper alternatives, Umpa Lumpa Sweet Shop donates old plastic containers to schools for art classes and storage, whilst Glass By Design owners Cathy and Angelina use every last piece of scrap glass in creative ways to make beautiful new pieces of art.
For those ready to support the sustainability methods further, did you know that Jo’s Organics offer a refillable scheme for natural cosmetics such as shampoos and washing up liquids. Fauvette offers a refillable glass milk and wine bottle scheme along with biodegradable pots for their deli produce, but it doesn’t stop there.

paper packaging, dramatically reducing cellophane use with bouquets and have even taken the opportunity to offer great new products such as flower bags for life, with 10% off your next purchase if you return with your bag.
You can read more about how local businesses are turning the tide on plastic and watch our video with business owners who are getting behind the campaign by visiting www.bit.ly/pv31plastic. You can also find out more about reducing your environmental footprint by visiting Gwyrddio Penarth Greening who are working for a more sustainable Penarth, and who are also behind the Shop Penarth scheme.

£1.2 MILLION INVESTMENT
This impressive amount of money has been invested by local, family-run Masons Self Storage. Visit their complex on the outskirts of Penarth to take a look.
Masons Self Storage, are delighted to announce that May 2018 saw the completion of the second phase of an amazing expansion project in the Vale of Glamorgan! 2016 saw the re-launch of Masons Self Storage with a total modernisation of the facility, adding state-of-the-art features such as 24/7 access with personalised PIN codes for customers, ESCORTA lifts for seamless journeys between the car park and storage units, an entire fit-out by Kuboid, and modern CCTV cameras and upgraded security alarms from Concept.
MORE SPACE, MORE CHOICE AND MORE FOR BUSINESS CUSTOMERS The demand for this type of flexible quality storage in the Vale of Glamorgan has been so great that Masons Self Storage, with the backing of 76
the Masons Group and an investment of £1.2 million, launched a second phase back in November 2017. This expansion project includes an additional 215 units, in a greater range of sizes than before, starting from 20 sqft up to 1,000 sqft, increasing the lettable space to 45,000 sqft. It also introduces a whole new concept of Work, Rest & Store in the Vale, aimed at the increasing number of business customers who are looking for more flexibility when juggling the demands of their businesses. At Masons’ newly created Business Lounge, customers can expect larger corridors to accommodate larger deliveries such as palleted stock or tradesmen storing rolls of carpet and tools.
www.penarthview.co.uk
In addition, Masons have built a brand new showroom which will be occupied by one of their business customers Twenty12 Flooring who offer customers a wide range of quality flooring. They opened their doors to the public for the first time on the May Day bank holiday. Gordon Mason, Director of the Masons Group, tells us:
“we chose to undertake the expansion project at Masons Self Storage as a response to customer demand, especially from the growing number of businesses that require a flexible solution to storing. We’re delighted that we can bring our customers the modern and upgraded facility that they deserve.”

COMMUNITY MATTERS Masons Self Storage is only 5 miles from Penarth and many of our home and business storage customers are Penarth residents, so we feel very much part of this wonderful, local community. We are always looking for ways to get involved in local initiatives: we are partners to Woody’s Lodge, support the Paul Woodland Memorial Trust Fund, have sponsored Belle Vue’s Music in the Park festival, and, more recently, have supported Penarth Yacht Club with their Lift Appeal. If you have a local community initiative that you think the Masons Group might be able to give support to, then let us know.
FREE TRANSPORT TO YOUR STORAGE UNIT No need to hire a van! Receive a free trailer to transport your goods to our unit when booking storage for a minimum of 3 months. Please quote Penarth View when booking. Terms and conditions apply. Call Masons Self Storage for more information.

JUST A RIDE TO TENBY
Words by Heather Rowan-Robinson The Carten is one of Wales’ most prestigious events growing from 4 riders in 2004 to 2,500 in 2018. It’s a bike ride of a hundred miles from Cardiff to Tenby. The main aim is to get people on their bikes with the additional benefit of raising money for charity. The organisers are keen to emphasise that it is a challenge and never a race. Like all great ideas it was born from a group of friends having a discussion (over a couple of pints) in a pub in Cardiff. They thought it would be a fantastic idea to visit the pubs in Tenby for a pint… by bicycle! The event starts in Cardiff, although with a huge number of riders from Penarth, an alternative starting line has been established in Caversham Park (for those that want to go an extra seven miles). The event is a well-oiled machine and we were supported the whole way with support vehicles on hand at every stop!
As expected during the ride there were high points and low points but, the day was championed by vibrant sunshine despite the rather pessimistic forecast. Supporters lining up along the roadside of the 100-mile route shouting and cheering us on heavily diluted the low points, which mainly consisted of chugging up a hill at mile 75, with zero in the tank. The atmosphere of the event was phenomenal and was definitely a day that I will remember for a long time coming. Going through the finish line was an amazing buzz and emotions were running high with exhaustion, relief, and bewilderment. A lot of us had done the ride to support personal charities very close to our heart. We were cycling to support the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff. To date the Carten has raised eight hundred thousand pounds, and we can’t wait to sign up again next year!
