CROESO—WELCOME SHWMAE? A s soon as the clocks go back we start getting excited about the festive season. Some are even more prepared though who are already in full swing in the summer! This issue has definitely left us feeling festive and we hope it will for you too! After a very successful Penarth Bakeoff, raising £XXX for Forget-me-not Chorus and Marie Curie, we’re looking forward to seeing what our local businesses have to offer this Christmas. Santa Claus is definitely comin’ to town, with everything you need this Christmas on your doorstep. Remember to #ShopPenarth and support your fabulous indies. Also, please don’t forget to mention Penarth View when you use those who advertise with us. This magazine isn’t just for Christmas, though! Keep it handy on your coffee table for this winter’s events. There’s also great travel destinations to inspire your next holiday in 2019, new year resolution ideas, winter activities for the whole family and interior trends—there’s something for everyone. Thank you as always to our wonderful sponsors, Rowley’s of Penarth, Restaurant James Sommerin, Little Fizz and Destination Ski for helping us showcase brilliant content for readers—take the time to go online and read more of our extended articles, recipes and stories at www.penarthview.co.uk! For us, Christmas will be spent with both our families in Penarth and Aberaeron, and our close friend David. We’re extremely lucky to have such amazing people around us. This got us thinking about those less fortunate, and how we might be able to help, in particular, those who are alone. Kate has written about how Contact the Elderly is tackling loneliness in older people on page 80, but, we can do more. If you have a neighbour or know someone who is alone, offer a cuppa, a seat at the table on Christmas Day, or just a friendly conversation. Of course, we’re thinking of those who are no longer with us, and for those who are, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a fabulous 2019! Nadolig llawen a blwyddyn newydd dda i chi gyd.

HAMPTONS FOR INSPIRATION

H

amptons is always one of the places to head to for the perfect gift. And their free gift wrapping service ensures that your gift is also beautifully presented. But at Christmas, Hamptons is even more special. Not only is the range of products greater, but you can also choose the most exquisite decorations for your tree and elsewhere in your home. And the free gift wrapping is even more welcome at this time of the year. It’s not only gifts, however, that you’ll find at Hamptons. Spread out over the two floors in what was once a Victorian meeting hall and fruit market, you’ll also find beautiful furniture items, cushions, throws, gorgeous lamps, mirrors, framed prints, decorative glass, and a whole range of other superb home accessories.

16

From the middle of November, the store is decorated for Christmas in the most enchanting style. Hamptons has become renowned for its amazing Christmas displays— the store is worth a visit for this alone to indulge the senses in complete wonderfulness. And rumour has it that Father Christmas will be visiting Hamptons each Sunday throughout December. Details are apparently top secret—the elves are keeping the plans under wraps—so the only way to find out is to sign up for the Hamptons email newsletters at their website so that you can be amongst the first to find out once the details are announced. We know from past years that this is the hot ticket and whilst there won’t be breakfast or tea this year, the magic will still be there.

BRING OUT YOUR CHRISTMAS BEST

G

Words by Amy Adams, A Brush With Beauty

rowing up, it was apparent that Christmas was a time for getting out one’s best. It’s given me a fascination of old-school glamour and a bygone era where formality and etiquette were a normal part of growing up. It reminds me of my Nan’s dressing table and pretty vintage compacts full of powders and rouge, carefully placed alongside cut glass perfume bottles and her sparkly jewellery. There was a sense of ritual and positive intention when sitting at her pink velvet stool looking into the mirror, where perhaps purpose and pleasure aligned for a moment. I think of the special outfits that we would carefully choose to wear on Christmas Day and the pretty china and glassware that you didn’t dare use at any other time of the year. After a gloriously long, hot summer it’s so thrilling to see a definite change in the seasons and we can now begin embracing the party season! When we think of the mood for this time of year, the colours and textures that ooze opulence and decadence, I have been hugely inspired by the high streets’ latest offerings. Whether looking for treats for a spot of ‘self-love’ or for gifting to your loved ones, the high street is beautifully stocked this Christmas. Whilst meandering Cardiff’s boutiques and stores, without doubt the colour of the season for stunning party eye make-up is green. Whether in the blue spectrum to give teal and forest, 18

or in the yellow spectrum to give khaki and hunter; it is a universally flattering colour that can be worn in many different ways by women of all ages and skin tones. I teach many women how to correctly shop for, and apply their own make-up and one of the fundamental elements of any make-up design is intention. What’s the mood for your make-up design? Once intention has been set, we move on to colour selection and, more importantly, texture. The texture, or finish, of a product can give a very different feel to a finished look. When you reach for a new eyeshadow or eyeliner, think about the texture.Could it be matte for the day and shimmer for the evening? Would your party look feel more special if glossy and highlighted, or bold and highly pigmented? And before any great work of art can begin, the canvas must be prepped! Now is the time of year to really make sure your skin has been given a lovely pamper. The primer needs to be dusted off and perhaps a smidge of shimmer added in too. And don’t forget your very best brushes. Not the ones that came with your compacts as an afterthought, but the ones you probably winced when purchasing and that are still pristine in their case.

Now is the time of year for stunning, unapologetic, decadent make-up design. And I absolutely love it! www.penarthview.co.uk

do love Christmas—there seems to be magic in the air leading to the big day! I like to treat myself to a new Christmas Day outfit. And this year, I wanted to create looks on a spree budget vs a steal budget. As I love to support independent boutiques, I went straight to Kiti Cymru, in Pontcanna. Kiti is so friendly, and Gwenno, the owner, is as welcoming as can be. She loves a chat (in both English and Welsh) and allows you to browse at ease. For Look No. 1 the essence is in luxurious textures. You will love investment pieces for years to come, and the quality should withstand the purchase price. Yellow is big this season and I just love how it brightens up the dullest of days. This beautiful cashmere jumper would look equally great worn with boyfriend jeans, and heels, or with a faux-leather skirt and flat loafers. Sequins and sparkle do not need to be limited for Christmas either. Look No. 2 is dual-purpose again. I love the silver and black contrast in this dress, the pussy bow tie, and the fact that it is a fine knitted piece (so has a bit of stretch!). The green coloured coat is just to die for, with a brightness that makes it stand out. The cut is stunning and the quality is something to be proud of.

NINE WANDS LIGHT UP LONDON 16 November sees the release of Warner Bros. Pictures’ highly anticipated new film Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. To mark the occasion, an installation of nine giant wands will illuminate the walkway between Millennium Bridge and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. We spoke to Matt Wild, of Cardiff-based Wild Creations, who worked with his team to bring the project to life. What can you tell us about your most recent project, working with Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald? It’s an installation of nine exact replica wands from the movie. They’re each four metres tall, with a light at the tip. At night, they flash in sequence to a music track.

Ball in the Wall, Cardiff Castle

24

What was most challenging working on this project? We were lucky that the turnaround time on this project was plentiful—it’s usually never enough time. When something is blown up to four metres tall, detail gets lost, so we had to add a lot more texture to the wands to make sure they looked lifelike close up.

Dragon’s Lair, Caerphilly Castle

www.penarthview.co.uk

Turn to page 22 for Rowley’s prize draw to win a piece of stunning Clogau jewellery.

What do you feel when you deliver some great work for international brands? There’s a great sense of pride from myself and from the team. We’ll all hang around the project in a nearby café and watch people’s reactions. When we deliver projects outside London, that reaction is even more intense, because the work is more unexpected.

How did Wild Creations start? Long before Wild Creations, I was a carpenter. A mate invited me down to work on the Doctor Who set, and it grew from there. I’d always wanted to set my own business up, so at 26 I used my connections to set up Wild Creations. I’d call on my friends for help along the way, so there wasn’t really a project we wouldn’t tackle. I’d bring in any skills that weren’t in-house. We’d done some work internationally, but it was Ball in the Wall that put us out there.

What makes the work you do so special? It’s the attention to detail. It’s walking the line between fake and ‘could be real’. Of course, Ball in the Wall was fake, but the detail, the angle of the ball, it all blurs the line with reality. It’s the introduction to fantasy world, which makes people pause.

What would be your dream project? A project related to the Olympics would be a highlight for me personally.

What’s the best thing about the team you have? The team work incredibly hard, and they all live and breathe Wild Creations. People often underestimate the craftsmanship that goes into each piece, and everyone is passionate to deliver a great project every time.

And closer to home, how is the TV and movie scene in Cardiff? It’s growing! And it’s being recognised as a creative city with a great talent base. For us, it can be a challenge to find enough people with the right skills, so we offer our own training and nurture them in-house. It’s great to have Bad Wolf Studios round the corner too. We’ve worked on a few projects for them, including His Dark Materials and A Discovery of Witches.

And how is life treating you living in Penarth? What are your three go-to places? Well we have an amazing view. There isn’t anything to dislike. You’ll usually find Sam and myself in the Pilot, Bar44 or the new Keyif restaurant! Oh, and a pint in the Lion too.

DON’T GET CAUGHT OUT BY SNOW THIS WINTER! After last year’s heavy snow and the same expected this winter, is your car prepared to take on the snowy weather conditions? Fitting winter tyres on your car will make it much easier and safer to get around if snow does fall. Even on dry roads, when the temperature is low, winter tyres work much better than standard tyres by using a special form of rubber designed not to harden in cold weather. This enables better grip, stopping time and handling. At 20 miles an hour, winter tyres stop 11 meter shorter on icy roads compared to standard tyres!

SEEING IN THE NEW YEAR IN STYLE This season, interior designer Miffy Shaw met Julie and Hayley, the duo behind Jewels Canley Interiors, who are celebrating nearly 36 years in the industry. With style pouring out of every pillowcase, print and paint colour that meets the eye, we’ve teamed up to showcase some of the biggest trends heading into the new year, which will help your 2019 flair with style.

Sustainability Black and Gold

Gold still gives the feeling of luxury, standing out when in front of a black backdrop. 2019 will experiment with black, introducing the colour into more areas of the home such as taps, kitchens and bathrooms. Black is technically a neutral colour that can go with anything, even another dark colour. Our favourite is black and navy blue!

Nature

Plants! Glossy, leafy succulents and cacti are great for the home (and most are virtually indestructible—trust me I’ve tried!) I’ve got around 30-40 plants at home, and adding a plant to the room can make it come alive. Cabbage flowers are the best in living spaces, and add a touch of elegance when you have guests.

30

Up-cycling furniture can bring a feeling of decadence, nostalgia and uniqueness to your space. Re-upholstery is the reduce, re-use and recycle of the interior world, and the perfect start to go bold with a bright fabric or pattern. It’s also the best way to beat the Ikea conveyer belt of living rooms! Scaffolding boards, mid-century furniture and Art Deco chests are a good place to start!

Navajo

This is going to be big for 2019 with its Aztec print and designs. Navajo (pronounced Nal-va-ho) can bring an ethnic feel into your space and works best on rugs, curtains and soft furnishings. Added with a splash of paprika, burgundy and mustard colours, it can add warmth to a white space. It’s also perfect with dark woods and strong taupe colours. Get rid of the grey!

www.penarthview.co.uk

Floral

It’s here to stay! In 2019 we expect to see floral prints mature a little, and incorporate stripes and patterns that catch the eye—check out Christian Lacroix's floral print! Everyone can do floral. There’s a pattern out there to suit everyone from bold colours, to prints that are less romantic.

Snake Skin and Animal Print

Obviously faux! These prints can really pop in your space. Generally, whatever you see on the catwalks makes its way into our homes. We like to take it up a notch and experiment with colours. Try a plush pink snakeskin ottoman, footstool or chair. For those a little more daring, you can also use animal prints such as tiger and cheetah prints in smaller spaces. Less is more though! Be adventurous with your cloakrooms and dressing room.

To read even more trends and to find out more about Miffy, Julie and Hayley, head to our website— www.penarthview.co.uk

So are we allowed to say the C word now? With Christmas looming, it’s time to start making your lists, and if you're anything like me, it’s all about the detail. I've always found it difficult to find the perfect cracker—one that would obviously go with my table theme and with good presents! Last year, I decided to make my own! I set a small budget for everyone’s cracker, and got them something I thought they’d really love: small aftershaves, photo keyrings, mini cacti and miniature bottles of spirit. You can make the basic cracker using DIY kits available online or at craft stores, or experiment with toilet roll tubes and sturdy wrapping paper. I had some fun writing jokes— and don't forget the hats either! Then go to town on your external decoration. Personalise for your guest, and to your taste. There is no limit. Wishing you a cracking Christmas!

OPEN UP—A NEW LEASE OF LIFE

The space is now flooded with light Photography by Chalkhouse Interiors

The stone fireplace, now painted white, became a real focal point in the room.

L

Words by Ceri Hill, Chalkhouse Interiors

iving in a beautiful Victorian house in the centre of Penarth, our client wanted her new kitchen to introduce a more contemporary note, but still reflect the period of the house. The existing kitchen, installed by a previous owner, was looking a little dated and the layout had also not taken advantage of the beautiful original stone fireplace, which was a real feature of the room. The kitchen already had relatively new French doors and picture window installed, but the style wasn’t all that sympathetic to the age of the house. As the whole kitchen space was being updated to include a small orangery for casual seating overlooking the walled garden, it

32

made sense to replace the window and doors at the same time. When Chalkhouse drew out the new kitchen layout, the stone fireplace became a real focal point, with a range cooker being built into the chimney breast. As part of the design, the kitchen and dining area were swapped so that the sink could be positioned under the window and the new doors were now adjacent to the table in the dining area. This change made a huge impact on the new kitchen space, giving a dedicated wet area around the sink for washing up and cleaning, and a new prep area on the island that united the separate elements of the kitchen. With a young family in the house, good storage was

www.penarthview.co.uk

an essential requirement, so a new breakfront larder unit was positioned next to the fridge and freezer, meaning all the foodstuff is stored together, saving time when unloading the weekly shop. The man of the house is a keen coffee drinker and a dedicated coffeemaking area was high on the wishlist. We included narrow drawers to store the coffee beans and grinding equipment, positioned below an attractive shelf where the pretty espresso cups are kept on display, and to hand. For the island, a change of paint colour and a chunky oak worktop introduced interest and warmth to the scheme and created a lovely place to perch, to watch meals being prepared, do homework or enjoy a cup of coffee. On the back of the island, pan drawers provide handy storage for pots and pans, close at hand to the traditional range cooker. Facing out of the kitchen, a pretty, full-width bookcase gives space for cookbooks and an attractive view from the dining room end of the room, and with the addition of some electrical sockets, a great place for charging phones and tablets as well. The new space is now bright and filled with light, and to maintain that airy feel the old stone chimney breast was painted to match the walls. Completed earlier this year, this beautiful Shaker kitchen is going to be the pride of a different owner very shortly as the house has just been put on the market, the current owners having decided to move to a more rural location where there is space to keep their beloved horses. Who knows, maybe you could be the lucky new owner of this lovely kitchen and home?

Chalkhouse was born out of a desire to offer discerning home owners a real alternative to poor quality, uninspiring, off-the shelf kitchens and furniture. PENARTH DOCK THROUGH TIME

Words by Meg Holland

P

enarth Dock began its life as the industrial revolution catapulted into full swing. Forged in 1865, the docks were a vital component to coal exports in South Wales. Although not the largest dock in the area, its unique functions throughout history make it an incredibly interesting study of changing society. As building on the docks began, navvies were employed to take on the huge construction process. Included in this group were Irish immigrants, described by the Marquis of Bute as arriving ‘with pestilence on their backs and famine in their stomachs’. Residing in what became notoriously known as ‘Dagger Town’ (Penarth Heights), an area dripping in ale houses, opium dens, prostitution and even murder, these navvies were vital in the construction of Penarth Dock.

By 1882, the dock was exporting 2 million tonnes of coal per year, proving itself to be a sure investment for the industrial elites. A representation of its successes can be seen in SS Great Britain’s departure to Panama from Penarth Docks in February 1886. This voyage also turned out to be the last in her history, after a fire on board caused the crew to divert in the Falkland Islands. At its peak in 1913, Penarth Dock exported 4,660,648 tonnes of coal, a statistic that it never reached again with the demand for coal exports falling dramatically post-WWI. After closing in 1936, the dock experienced a brief rebirth during WWII as a U.S. Navy base, but closed again in 1963. Penarth Dock was a product of the flourishing Industrial Revolution and continued to serve as an emblem for changing society through the 19th and 20th centuries.

Our favourite children’s book this Christmas is the gorgeous Animalphabet from the ever popular Julia Donaldson, an exquisite exploration of the animal world with peep-through pages and amazing fold-out flaps. With eye-catching artwork, each page draws you further into a beautifully vibrant world of huge elephants, slithery snakes and growling tigers, inviting you to compare one animal to another and learn comparison words and adjectives from the natural world. IT'S ALL HUMBUG, I TELL YOU Red Herring Theatre brings A Christmas Carol to Penarth Pier Pavilion this December. We caught up with Alex Wilson, who's playing Ebenezer Scrooge, to find out more.

We imagine that rehearsals for A Christmas Carol are well underway! What are you looking forward to most about the performance? Being a Penarth-based company, it’s fantastic to be able to bring a festive alternative to panto to such an iconic Victorian venue as the Pier Pavilion.

Do you have a favourite part of the performance? Without giving too much away of course! Not one part specifically, but I’m enjoying working with director Dan Burrows to develop a character who starts as such a miser but ultimately learns the true meaning of Christmas.

How did you get involved with community theatre?

What can audiences expect from the performance?

I remember seeing West Side Story on the West End in 1985. Being close to the energy, the songs, and the orchestra, has stayed with me ever since. I met my wife Nikki doing community theatre when I played the vicar and she played the tart in Alan Bennett’s Habeas Corpus. When we moved to Cardiff for Nikki’s job, we didn’t know anyone, so it was a great way to make a new group of friends.

A traditional festive evening of carols, mince pies and merriment, with a good dash of spookiness thrown in!

How long have you been involved in Red Herring Theatre and how long has the company been running?

Do you have any exciting plans and new shows for audiences in 2019?

It was whilst holidaying in Tenby that we got excited by the idea of doing outdoor theatre in the beautiful Manorbier Castle. We pitched the idea to the theatre-loving owner, and in 2013 Red Herring Theatre was born. Since then we’ve performed 3 productions at the castle: The 39 Steps, 'Allo 'Allo and Dick Barton. Earlier this year, we decided to try something local and were delighted by the sell-out success of our production of Jeeves & Wooster on the Pier.

How many people are involved? We are lucky to be able to draw on an amazingly talented pool of local actors, including our young cast from the Pauline Quirke Academy in Cardiff. We have a cast of 17 plus a brilliant team of technicians, taking the numbers up to nearly 30.

We are delighted to announce that we will be performing Fawlty Towers at the amazing Carew Castle, near Tenby, from August 12–16, 2019. We also hope to do another production in Penarth later in the year.

If any of our readers would like to join, how do they get involved? We are always delighted to welcome new members either on stage or off. Keep an eye out for announcements on our Red Herring Theatre Facebook page or email redherringtheatre@gmail.com.

RAISIN' DOUGH FOR CHARITY 4 November 2018 saw the return of Penarth Bakeoff, to raise some dough for our two chosen charities Forget-me-not Chorus and Marie Curie. What an unforgettable day it was!

W

e'd like to extend a deep, heartfelt thanks to everyone who made Penarth Bakeoff possible, especially our three sponsors Cleaner's Got Talent, Seabreeze Homes and Masons Self Storage. Special thanks must also go to our competition judges David Schönthal, Charlotte Williams and Nicola Philip, for judging so professionally and fairly. And to our team of volunteers, thank you for giving your time so selflessly. To the compère Stifyn Parri and photographer Phil Lewis, thank you for giving the day extra shine and capturing the event for posterity. Albert Primary School PTA, thanks for keeping the tea and coffee flowing, and to all our stall holders, who had a successful day of trading. Entertainment came from Little Fizz, Penarth Community Choir, Joe Pope, Will Summers and Steph Jackson—thank you for sharing your talent on the stage. Finally, thank you to everyone who baked a cake, entered the spirit of the day, and came along to raise money for two incredibly important charities. It's humbling to see how alive and well community spirit is in our town.

PENARTH VIEW FOOD SECTION SPONSORED BY JAMES SOMMERIN This winter we’ve teamed up with Restaurant James Sommerin to bring you a food section full of delicious food ideas and events.

Cooking good quality food has always been part of my family, which is why we’re pleased to be able to sponsor Penarth View’s food section. Good food, simply made, is within everyone’s reach.

I

t’s hard to deny the love for food that we have in Wales, and with some of the best food produce to tickle the most critical of tastebuds, it’s no surprise that we like to shout about it from the tops of our mountains! In the first of our Four Corners of Wales feature, we take a look towards East Wales to find out what delicacies await.

James and his wife Louise invite you to dine with them for a Michelin star experience where you’ll taste only the best quality ingredients that are locally sourced where possible.

PENARTH VIEW FOOD SECTION SPONSORED BY JAMES SOMMERIN

Restaurant James Sommerin is taking bookings now for Christmas and New Year, to celebrate with a bang.

Gingerbread house by Charlotte Williams at Lily’s Bake Box

MAKES ONE GINGERBREAD HOUSE

CARAMEL GLUE 100g caster sugar 30ml cold water / 1 Put the sugar and water in a large, low-sided frying pan over a medium-high heat. Without stirring, bring to 160°C on a sugar thermometer, until the sugar has dissolved and it turns a light golden colour. / 2 Leave to cool for a few moments to thicken slightly. If the syrup begins to harden in the pan, put it back over a gentle heat until it has returned to the required consistency. Be really careful as it’s extremely hot!

/ 4

/ 5

/ 6

GINGERBREAD 100g soft brown sugar 100g golden syrup 50g butter 200g plain flour 1 heaped tsp of ground ginger 2 tsp of bicarbonate of soda ½ tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp salt / 1 Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius (fan oven) and line a baking tray with parchment paper. / 2 In a saucepan on a low heat mix and slowly melt the butter, brown sugar and golden syrup. Once melted, leave to cool. / 3 In a separate bowl, mix the dry ingredients, flour, bicarbonate of soda, ginger, cinnamon and salt. Once the wet mixture has cooled, pour into the bowl with the dry ingredients and combine.

60

Mix until combined. The mixture should bind together well into a ball. Wrap in cling film and place in the fridge to chill for 30 minutes. Once chilled, bring the gingerbread out and back to room temperature. Between two sheets of baking paper, roll out as thick as a £1 coin. Cut out the gingerbread house shapes and place onto the baking tray. Leave enough space between the shapes as there may be some spreading whilst they bake. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes, until it is golden brown. Remove from the oven and leave on the tray to cool completely. The gingerbread will be soft to touch initially and harden as they cool.

ASSEMBLY / 1

/ 2

Use the caramel as your glue. Dip the sides of the shapes into the caramel, as it’s less messy. Start with the base and sides first, before adding the roof. Ensure you glue together all sides of the house to make it as sturdy as possible. Once assembled, you can decorate it with whatever you like and however you like. In the one pictured, I used white chocolate ganache drizzle as the snow on the roof along with edible silver balls and some white buttercream for thicker snow effect. This is your chance to be as creative as you want and put your stamp on it.

Jack Frost

White Christmas Mojito Who says mojitos are only for warm-weather months? Mint is just as fitting a flavour for the Christmas season. Add the juice of 1 lime and a table spoon of sugar to a glass. Throw in 8 mint leaves, and a splash of white rum, and coconut rum. Pour in 1/4 cup of canned coconut milk and top up with sparkling water. Garnish with pomegranate arils for some extra festive flair!

Frosty flavours make this a cool cocktail you’ll want on Christmas Day. Pour 1 tablespoon of sugar syrup and 3 cups of ice into a shaker. Add 1 cup of pineapple juice, 1/2 cup of vodka, 1/2 cup of blue Curaco and 1/2 cup of cream of coconut. Shaken, not stirred.

Apple Pie on the Rocks Who wouldn’t want to have a slice of apple pie in the form of a cocktail? Just add 1 part vanilla vodka and 1 part whiskey to 4 parts apple juice. Use a pinch of ground cinnamon and ice and voilà!

EASY TREATS TO IMPRESS

Whether you have 5 or 50 minutes, these easy party treats are great this Christmas

Strawberry Santas

Reindeer bites

Great for kids, these simple Santas only require three ingredients: strawberries, vanilla frosting, and black icing gel. Simply cut the leaves off a strawberry and slice in half. Pipe some vanilla frosting between both halves in a swirling motion. Add a little more to the top of the strawberry and carefully pipe two black eyes.

Break the pretzel twists in half to look like antlers, find the soft spot in the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and press in the pretzel antlers. Use some smooth peanut butter to attach an M&M nose and edible eyes. Continue to press and secure any of the pieces that aren’t sticking until firm. Enjoy!

Christmas candy carollers

Marinated goat’s cheese

Using gummy worms, red and white gumdrops, stripped peppermints and nonpareil sprinkles you can build your own Christmas caroller. Top tip! Use a tooth pick to make indents for the nonpareils!

A great alternative to a heavy cheese board. Break some soft rindless goat’s cheese into four pieces and roll into balls. Place in a glass jar, then pack the lemon zest, thyme and chilli around the cheese. Scatter fennel seeds and pour over olive or rapeseed oil. Chill and leave to marinate for two days. Store in the fridge, and eat within a fortnight.

DESTINATION SKI

A ski holiday is something special: a week of freedom, fresh air, and adventure where camaraderie and fun are par for the course. The thrill of mastering an exciting new skill combined with spectacular mountain scenery, roaring log fires and a cosy chalet to relax in sounds idyllic. And it is. In fact, it’s addictive. If you fancy giving it a go but don’t know where to start, read on for some top tips on how to prepare for your first ski holiday.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION As a beginner, don’t think your first ski holiday has to be in a well-known resort like Verbier or Chamonix. You’ll be paying a premium for a huge ski area you won’t fully use. Many of the smaller, lesser known ski areas have excellent facilities for beginners. They are more cost effective and provide an ideal base to learn your first turns. Arinsal in Andorra and Avoriaz in 64

France are both great for beginners. Consider the location of your accommodation carefully. Book somewhere with easy access to the beginner slopes, ski rental shop and ski school. Walking in ski boots and carrying your ski kit can take a bit of getting used to at first, so having a convenient set up with everything close at hand will pay dividends.

www.penarthview.co.uk

WHAT DO I NEED? Aside from your basic holiday package you will need some “ski extras”, which includes a lift pass (your passport to the slopes), lessons, and equipment hire. When booking your lift pass, a cheaper local area pass will suffice. it’s highly unlikely you’ll cover the full 600km of The Three Valleys in week one! Also, don’t be persuaded by friends that can ski to join them where they claim they will “look after you”. Always take professional tuition when starting out. Pre-book your ski extras. It’s usually cheaper and guarantees your place in ski school, during busy weeks like half term many ski schools will be fully booked well in advance.

TAKE THE FAMILY There’s no better family holiday experience than a ski trip. It’s a huge adventure for everyone. There’s a certain bond that’s formed on the slopes. Whether it’s the pride of watching your children master their first green run or the kids laughing at dad falling over, you’re all in it together, learning something new and making great memories. If your children are young, there are several family specialist ski operators who provide a full childcare service, including taking children to and from ski school, making skiing with little ones hassle free.

PenarthView #LovePenarth

Founded by Penarth residents Emma Staples-Hull and Steve Hull, Destination Ski is a specialist ski travel agency, committed to delivering unforgettable ski holidays across France, Canada and Andorra. Finally, it goes without saying that the easiest way to book any ski trip is to enlist the help of a ski specialist. The expert team at Destination Ski would love to help plan your next adventure.

HIDDEN GEMS YOU MUST VISIT R egular columnist Jo Baldwin looks at overshadowed, hidden gems you should visit in 2019. Jo is an independent Travel Counsellor, who provides friendly, professional travel advice and trusted tailor-made holidays.

Call 07581 181 236 or email jo.baldwin@travelcounsellors.com GDAŃSK, POLAND Gdańsk is a true cosmopolitan gem located on the Baltic coast of Poland and offers a great location for a city break combined with superb beaches. Loved for its quirky, cobbled streets and boutique shops stacked with amber jewellery, it’s got an amazing array of cool cafés and lively nightlife. The town’s seen a lot of recent investment and now boasts modern museums and superb transport links. Head to nearby Hel, a spa town situated on the end of a

long sandy peninsula to sample the highlights of the Polish Riviera and the longest pier in Europe. If you visit in ‘golden autumn’ when the sun is warm, you’ll be treated to the most beautiful soft light and an abundance of coloured leaves. The neighbouring town of Sopot has a stunning beach and lots of opportunities to party on the sand—the summer months here are lively. The harbour at Gdynia is also well worth a visit for its art deco seaside charm.

LUXURY Hotel Podewils is a classy boutique hotel located in Gdańsk’s Old Town area with views out over the Motława River and a great summer terrace.

MID RANGE Hotel Gdańsk Boutique is a delight housed in an 18th-century granary overlooking the pretty marina in Gdańsk town.

ON A BUDGET Hotel Błękitny Żagiel’s funky, clean and modern rooms belie its low price tag. Situated close to the marina in Gdynia, it’s the perfect base to explore the city.

LUXURY Boutique Hotel Forza Terra offers a divine outdoor pool, sun terrace and spa located just a short drive from Kotor town.

MID RANGE

KOTOR, MONTENEGRO Montenegro has been somewhat overshadowed by the meteoric rise in popularity of neighbouring Croatia but has equal amounts of natural beauty, stunning architecture and chic café culture. Kotor is a seaside town rich in history, boasts a plethora of medieval monuments and diverse architecture, and is a designated UNESCO world heritage site. Situated in a dramatic location deep in the Bay of Kotor, the town is sandwiched between steep rugged mountains that rise sharply into the blue sky, and the sparkling azure waters of the Adriatic Sea. Get lost in the maze of medieval streets, and stumble from Venetian Palaces to the Roman Cathedral to piazzas packed with cafés and restaurants. Those in the know visit in spring when it’s quieter but no less beautiful although the summer months boast a wide array of festivals and outdoor markets. Kotor’s been on the radar for the yacht set for quite some time, so as new flight routes open up from the UK this area is one that’s sure to increase in popularity.

Boutique Hotel Cattaro is superbly renovated and houses a popular local nightclub. As part of the town’s old walls, it has great sea views.

ON A BUDGET Small and intimate 15th-century Palazzo Druško is a former Montenegrin noble’s palazzo which offers an idyllic location next to the cathedral in the heart of Kotor’s old town.

LUXURY The Maji Beach Boutique Hotel is exquisite beachfront living at its best. Four-poster beds, private beach, world class service.

MID RANGE Pinewood Beach Resort & Spa may have the bumpiest driveway ever, but it’s located on a lovely quiet stretch of beach and is multi award winning.

ON A BUDGET Diani Beach Club is small but perfectly formed and has a lovely swimming pool complete with bali beds and direct beach access.

PenarthView #LovePenarth

DIANI BEACH, KENYA Located on a pristine stretch of white powdery beach with glittering sea and lush vegetation hugging the shore, this paradise resort has something for everyone from backpacking kite surfers to fun loving families and upmarket honeymooners. Overlooking the Indian Ocean, the accommodation options here are totally out of the ordinary, so don’t expect a soulless concrete resort. The hotels here are uniquely funky and bursting with charm. It’s worth visiting just for Diani itself, but if you’re keen to combine a safari with a beach break in Kenya, then this is the ideal spot. The dry seasons in Kenya run from June to October and then December to March so it’s ideal for a summer or winter holiday. If you’re visiting on safari, then aim for dry season as animals congregate around permanent water making them easier to spot in the wild. Kenya’s Masai Mara lays out the green carpet for millions of migrating wildebeests (with predators chasing close behind) from July to October—one of nature’s most spectacular sights.

DRIVING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS On the road again this winter? Whether it’s seeing loved ones, grabbing that last Christmas bargain or the daily commute, Simon, Tom and the team at Victoria Garages have put together some handy tips to keep you safe and on track!

/ 1 Check that tyres are properly inflated, all fluids such as water, antifreeze and oil are topped up and you have a full tank of fuel. / 2 Clean all windows with deicer and clear any snow from the roof to ensure your view isn’t blocked whilst driving. / 3 If you don’t use your car often, give it a regular overnight trickle charge. / 4 Turn off electrical items like lights, heated rear windows and wipers before trying to start the engine. / 5 Use the starter in short, five-second bursts and if the engine doesn’t start quickly, wait 30 seconds between attempts. 68

/ 6 Air-con de-mists screens faster and reduces condensation. / 7 Don’t leave your wipers on auto when you park up. Your blades may freeze to the screen, and you could damage the wiper motor when you turn the ignition on. / 8 Frozen locks? Use a cigarette lighter to warm your key. / 9 Plan routes via major roads, which are more likely to be cleared and gritted in winter. / 10 If you get stuck, lay a sack or old rug in front of the driving wheels to give the tyres some grip.

PLANNING / 1 Pack a winter emergency kit: water, emergency contact numbers such as your breakdown provider and policy number, snack bars, warm clothes, water proof jacket, trousers and a high-vis jacket. If it’s snowing, take a small shovel and a mat or large plastic sack. / 2 Think about getting winter tyres or all-season tyres. / 3 Keep an eye on the weather and wherever possible plan a route around it. You can check the internet for traffic update sites and listen to radio traffic alerts, we recommend www.traffic-wales.com and www.trafficengland.com for live updates on incidents, congestion and roadworks. / 4 Having a road atlas will make use of those school orienteering classes and keep you on the right track when your phone runs out of juice. Alternatively a USB cable and mapping app on your phone is a must-have for long road trips. / 5 Consider purchasing a breakdown policy. You won’t regret it when your car breaks down on a lonely back road. / 6 Keep costs down by conserving fuel as you drive. Minimise sudden starts and stops, empty your car of all unnecessary weight, and slow down—it takes much less fuel to drive 55 miles an hour than it does to drive 70. / 7 Don’t wait until your fuel gauge is sitting on the red to refuel. As soon as you hit a quarter of a tank, start looking for a place to fill up.

FURTHER SUCCESS FOR WESTBOURNE

Best practice at Westbourne School officially recognised at Estyn Awards. 2018 has been a highly successful year for Westbourne School. Having achieved the accolade of being graded ‘excellent’ across all five inspection categories by Estyn in May 2018, the school has both maintained its number one position in the Sixth Form League Tables for small schools, as verified by the Daily Telegraph in August, and achieved a percentage of Grade 9 GCSE grades five times the national average. The autumn term has seen further success with Westbourne having the privilege of being invited 74

to the Estyn Awards Dinner at Cardiff’s Holland House Hotel in October. Not only were school representatives presented with a Certificate of Excellence in each key inspection category, but the school was particularly recognised for best practice in two specific categories ‘Leadership’ and ‘EAL (English as an Additional Language)’. These two latter areas were particularly pleasing, due to the hard work that has been done by every part of the school community over the last few years.

www.penarthview.co.uk

Westbourne School has been top of the Sixth Form league tables for four years in a row SMALLER SCHOOLS: DAILY TELEGRAPH, BEST-SCHOOLS

Dr. Griffiths commented on the Best Practice Recognition:

“ I, personally, was particularly supported by the school’s incredible leadership transition programme on my appointment in October 2017. The school’s management targeted a process of instruction, Continued Professional Development and close working partnerships with previous school leaders several years before my appointment. This allowed me to take the role of school Principal with an incredible degree of confidence and to be more than prepared for the Estyn inspection that came four months after my appointment. Kudos go to the professional foresight of the school’s structure and planning that allowed my role to be so successful. In addition, we were commended for our outstanding work with students whose first language is not English. These students excelled and surpassed expectations in our nurturing environment of support, expertise and personalised curriculum. The last twelve months have been the most successful and rewarding of my career—but I am pragmatic enough to appreciate that a standard has been set that is now the minimum, rather than the aspirational level of achievement required from this excellent school. ” Dr. Gerard Griffiths Principal of Westbourne

Westbourne Prep celebrate excellence across every inspection category

Notwithstanding such an excellent year, Westbourne remains unselective and has recently opened its doors to children from two years old to its nursery Little Westbourne. Academic excellence is achieved across the whole school through small classes of a maximum of 20 students per class in the secondary school and 16 in the prep school, unparalleled one-to-one academic support from highly qualified, committed teachers, and outstanding pastoral care.

For those interested in finding out more about Westbourne, we warmly invite private visits and tours all year round.

Bright Oak helps them to address the initial crisis and then work towards clearing the debts altogether. They made the decision to move to The Business Centre in 2017. It was important for Andrew to avoid the rush hour traffic in and out of Cardiff and, after visiting The Business Centre, they fell in love with the family business atmosphere that tenants enjoy here, as well as the short commute. In fact, it only takes Andrew a mere ten minutes to get to the office from his home in Penarth!

The South Wales Time Recorder is in its 40th year of business and imports and sells time management systems through the UK and Europe. They came to The Business Centre when their private offices were damaged. With Masons Self Storage next door, they make use of having both facilities so close together. In just the short time they have been here, their turnover has increased, and they have even launched a new company, Charge Locker Ltd, which imports and supplies secure mobile phone charging lockers. For them, having the space makes sense as they don't worry about bills, refuse collection, or office cleaning!

Sharan and her team needed a home for their business that was easily accessible to all of the Vale as well as some flexible, additional space for them to hold training and support events for their staff. With flexible rolling contracts, excellent amenities and an easy commute just ten minutes from Cardiff Bay and Penarth, The Business Centre ticked all of the boxes for the team.

CHRISTMAS MAGIC IN BARRYBADOS

F

estive music is playing in the shops, advent calendars are sold out, and the Christmas lights are getting ready to be switched on. This can only mean one thing: Christmas is well on its way to Barrybados! With so many independent brands here in the Vale, it’s not too late to pick up the perfect present for your loved ones, whilst also supporting our local economy. For many brands, this is the busiest time of year, preparing their stock and Christmas orders. One brand that is set for Christmas is Barrybados, who sell quirky Barry inspired products. In the run up to Christmas, Louis and Rhys from Barrybados see a huge increase in the local trade, both in the shop and online. From Christmas jumpers and beach towels to window stickers, Barry residents are showing off their Barry pride during the festive season. It’s not only Barry locals that are interested in Barrybados’ wares. They have shipped products as far as Australia! What do these brands do with all of their extra stock in the lead up to Christmas? Louis explained how Barrybados frees up space by storing at Masons Self Storage. Accessible 24/7 (even on Christmas Eve!), on the edge of Barry, Sully & Dinas Powys and only 10 minutes from Penarth and offering a professional service, Masons Self Storage are ready for the Christmas rush.

Andrew from Haya Ltd, has been storing his stock with Masons Self Storage for over a decade! As a seller of remote-control toys, business at Christmas is booming for him. In particular, model tanks sales, within the UK and internationally, increase by over a third at this time of year. Delivery services are also busier, so Andrew’s advice is to order early!

Businesses aren’t the only ones looking to free up space at Christmas. From dollhouses to the latest game consoles, Masons have stored it all at Christmas. Eleanor Jones, from Penarth, rents a unit at Masons especially for Christmas, allowing her to free up space at home as well as hiding gifts from three small children! Not only Domestic Customers love the 24/7 access at Christmas, but our Business Customers also make full use of Masons Self Storage over the festive period to prep for Christmas, store their additional stock, and take advantage of 24/7 access, 365 days a year. In particular, Masons Self Storage’s new Business Zone, with wider corridors is perfect for palleted stock. And complete with a business lounge with free WiFi, work spaces and refreshments, it's perfect for sellers on the go in this busy period.

Jimmy delivers locally within the Vale every Friday and posts nationally every day.

TACKLING LONELINESS

L

Words by Kate Housley

oneliness is a big concern in the UK at the moment, as almost 18% of people say they always or often feel lonely. For Wales, that’s the equivalent of 458,000 people! Many of these people are elderly and are often isolated, frail, living alone and unable to get out and about. Contact the Elderly is a national charity that tackles loneliness and isolation amongst the elderly by taking them out to tea once a month. The charity has an active group in Penarth. Norma is the newest member of the group and joined in March this year, and says how much she enjoys the company and the conversation. Vera has been a member of the group for around 12 years, and loves the company, friendship and chatter that comes from attending.

“I don’t have any friends from my generation anymore so it’s great to meet up. Everyone in the group is so different. I enjoy hearing their stories.” Vera Contact the Elderly has groups all over the UK including over 50 in Wales. It is the only national charity focussed on relieving the acute isolation of older people through regular face to face contact. Locally, there are groups in Penarth and Cardiff. Kate Housley, who supports groups across Wales, says “it’s great to see the elderly guests enjoying themselves. 80

www.penarthview.co.uk

They look forward to the monthly teas and meeting up with friends for cake and chat. New members come in a little bit shy and go out with a big smile and new friends.” Groups are run by local volunteers: volunteer drivers collect older guests from their homes and accompany them to tea parties, while volunteer hosts hold the tea parties in their homes. Kate said “We are

always looking for volunteers and guests to support existing groups and open new groups to help as many people as possible. For the volunteers, it’s a small commitment, one afternoon once a month, but for the guests it’s a lifeline of friendship.” PenarthView #LovePenarth

HERE WE GO AGAIN PWFC

Inset 1: PWFC team photo Inset 2: Half time briefing

P

Words by Elin Blakemore, PWFC team member

enarth Women Football Club was kickstarted by captain, Kaeleigh Beddoe, in 2016, and early training sessions took place on damp Saturdays in February 2016, attended by just a few mates and with a coach borrowed from a male Sunday league team. Since then, PWFC have progressed at a fantastic pace and continue to welcome regular members of all levels. The establishment of the only (and possibly first) women’s football club based in Penarth is part of an everincreasing presence of female football. The male-dominated sport is now on the primary curriculum for everyone, and the spectator numbers at women’s national games continue to break their own records. The development of amateur teams like PWFC shows that women of all ages have a real wish to join in and support the sport, in all capacities. The hopeful team have participated in various tournaments and charity events, including the Cardiff Women’s Football Casual League, which is based on monthly matches and is now run

by two PWFC players. Having been underdogs of this league, PWFC kept their heads held high and managed to learn greatly from experienced teams such as Cardiff City Ladies Veterans and South Wales Police LFC. Training is led by innovative and well-qualified coach Scott Robinson and the atmosphere is friendly and inclusive—something players value deeply. “It’s about being active, team spirit and having fun. If we win, then it’s a bonus. Either way, there’s drinks in the pub afterwards”, says Goalie Vic Boobyer, who regards PWFC as a highly successful club off the pitch, even when it’s not always winning on the pitch.

DETAILS If you are keen to dust off your football boots or indeed have never worn a pair, but fancy giving football a go, come and join PWFC (trainers are fine!). Our ages currently vary from 18-48, so everyone’s welcome! Weekly training is on Thursdays, 7-8pm at Headlands School (first session free). Find and support PWFC on Facebook. / facebook.com/womensfootballpenarth 84

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS The very first new year's resolutions were recorded by the Babylonians, who made their promises to the Gods at the start of each year, returning their borrowed objects and paying debts. These days, resolutions take many different forms, and, for some, are a great way to try something new. The Penarth View team have compiled some ideas and tips to stick to them in 2019! Allow yourself to be inspired, and good luck!

1

2

3

Think about what’s involved. Want to start running? Get yourself some gear to keep you warm and plan your run around sunrise. Running in the evening after a long day can be daunting.

Breaking habits is hard and requires patience and brain training. We recommend reading Drive by Daniel Pink.

Get in the right mindset. Have a think about how you can overcome common obstacles. How will you turn down the piece of cake in the office, tackle the rain on a Thursday morning or overcome that tired feeling?

4 Fail to prepare, then prepare to fail. Add a realistic time frame to your goal and think about how much time and effort is required.

86

Keeping you on track

5

6

7

If you’re in it for the long haul, set some mini milestones to help you along the way.

Plan a celebration after you’ve reached your goal that boosts your achievement.

Learn from others and their experiences. People love talking about their achievements!

GO OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE

IMPROVING YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Everyone's heard of someone doing a skydive or bungee jump. Why not try something different and book a balloon ride from Bristol, chase a rolling cheese down Cooper’s Hill, or try paddleboarding on the Taff with Puravida? You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the end of it!

Mental well-being is a hot topic, with more people recognising the stresses and strains of daily life and lifechanging events. Finding one thing that relaxes you and takes you outside of your dayto-day bubble can improve concentration, productivity, and happiness. It all starts by making time for a yoga class, a brisk walk or a sit down in your favourite chair for a ten minute mindfulness exercise.

EXERCISE If exercise is top on your list this year, combine it with something different. Join a Rhythm Tap Cardiff dance class in Chapter, a Park Run event every week, take circus classes with NoFitState Circus, or raise money for charity as a group. If you exercise with others, the experience is more fun, socially stimulating and you’re less likely to give up!

SELF-DEVELOPMENT Whether it's 3 new facts about a work skill, hobby or passion every week, a new language, a musical instrument (the list is endless), learning a new skill changes the chemistry in your brain, can help stave off dementia, helps you adapt better to change and can add an extra bit of interest to you as a person. What’s stopping you?

LEARN A PARTY TRICK From making a penny disappear in a bottle of water to jumping eggs, party tricks can boost your confidence in a group setting and are also a brilliant conversation piece (even if it goes wrong!)

FOLLOW A DREAM What’s your dream? Whether it’s owning your own bakery, visiting the seven wonders of the world, or writing a poetry book. It all starts by taking a small step. Set up a stall selling cakes at a fair, calculate how much money you can afford to save every month to travel, or go to your favourite Penarth coffee shop with your journal every Sunday. Don’t put this one off!

DETAILS Visit the Penarth View website for more new years resolutions to inspire you. And let us know how you get on—perhaps we'll cover them in a future issue. / www.bit.ly/pv33resolutions

LIGHTS, CAMERA ACTION Selling houses is all in a day's work at David Baker & Co. However, now and again, the team are presented with a home that provides an infinite amount of possibilities. Situated in Sully, boasting views of the Bristol Channel and beyond, Sully House has been pinned as the perfect location for TV and film making. So much so, that owner Jonathan Davies and his family have opened their home to film crews and casts of some of TV’s most popular shows. We spoke to Jonathan to find out how opening up your home can be a great experience and how your house can be used for more than just a home.

What made you think of opening your house up as a film location?

Would you recommend others to offer their homes as a film location?

A location manager found my house and got in touch. From there, we’ve been approached by other production companies who work on TV series, or even Bollywood films. It’s something that I find interesting so I thought we’d give it a go.

Yes definitely. If you find TV and filmmaking interesting, it’s great to see how the stage, cast, make-up, costume and production teams all work together.

Have you ever watched TV and seen your house in a filmed scene? How does that feel?

You have to be a laid-back person and be prepared to have some disruption during filming. Trusting your house to a crew of stage professionals isn’t for everyone, but I must say every experience I’ve had has been brilliant. From the video village, where up to three crew members ensure continuity between shoots, the sound and camera crew, right down to the stage management, everyone has been fantastic.

Yes, the house was used in

Keeping Faith and it was great seeing the house as part of the production. The latest production crew are here filming for a TV series for S4C and have completely redecorated the kitchen. They’d done such a good job that when they asked if we wanted the original colours put back on the walls, we decided to keep it!

What are your top tips for anyone thinking about using their home as a film location?

Depending on the size of production there can be between 10-50 people on site at a time. Has this ever got too much to handle? Not really. You have to be prepared for some disruption as the crews work long hours from early morning to late evening. There was one week where we went bowling three times, which the kids loved. The production team really look after you and your home. I’m always really impressed by the level of professionalism.
