ell, what a scorcher of a summer we’ve had! We’re writing this as the weather is starting cool down, and up until proofreading day, we were unsure if we were ready to let the sunshine go. If you’re anything like us though, then don’t worry. Our second issue as editors, #PV32, should have you foraging for those cardigans and turning up the gas on the cooker with our Falling for Food issue. We’d like to thank everyone who has supported us and reached out, emailed, commented on social media and stopped us in the street to say how much you liked our summer issue. Most importantly, thank you to our fabulous team of contributors, creatives and advertisers for providing us with amazing print and online content. For this issue, we’d like to welcome James Sommerin, Rowley’s and Little Fizz as sponsors of terrific articles for you to feast over this autumn. On the subject of advertising, we hope your Penarth View experience is more enjoyable now that we’ve reduced the amount of advertising in our magazine. Our advertisers are also businesses that are all independents and from the local area. Being a small business ourselves, we want to encourage every reader to use our fantastic local indies. Not only are they a friendly bunch, but they also showcase a fantastic range of products that you’ll seldom get in any huge superstore. Remember to proudly place your copy of Penarth View on your coffee table and keep up to date with the great events in our What’s On Guide, happening in and around Penarth as well as the delicious recipes and food ideas we’ve packed in to keep you warm (there’s more available online too at www.penarthview.co.uk)! Lastly, pass your copy onto someone else when you have finished with it, come online to find even more content about our fabulous sea-side town, and keep up to date with our mobile-friendly website and social media channels – perfect for the daily commute.

THE EXCEPTION NOT THE RULE
H
oused in a building celebrating a history in trading great products and providing a meeting hall for the people in Penarth since the Victorian times, the Hamptons team are excited to write a new chapter in their own story. Providing everything from beautiful greetings cards and unique gifts for someone special to interior items that’ll make your home gorgeous, Peter, Andy, and the team invite you to take a look at their fabulous new

ranges in their new-look space. It’s not hard to see that style and vision has been at the heart of Hamptons from the very beginning. Transforming what was the old snooker hall and meeting room for Penarth’s community groups, Hamptons was created to provide Penarth with an answer to high quality and stylish items, all on your doorstep. More recently, the established Blue Pelican café served its last afternoon tea this summer to make way for an elegant new space amongst other new and exciting ventures in Hamptons itself, as well as surrounding areas in the Vale. As part of Hamptons expansion, Peter and Andy are thrilled to be welcoming Claire Viader and Viader Vitality Holistic Therapy into the premises this Autumn. With a newly refurbished therapy room providing superb treatments, both parties are excited to bring customers their perfect experience. After speaking to Andy and Peter about what’s next for Hamptons, it’s clear that they are happy to showcase their sublime new ranges of products, chosen to entice customers to explore their inner interior designer. What’s also clear is that Hamptons is a destination in Penarth, now for both retail and holistic therapy. With the outlook of being the exception, and not the rule, you’ll be delighted to see products that you won’t find widely available on the high street and treat yourself to a therapy treatment at the same time.

TEN YEARS IN THE MAKING
This season saw in the 10-year anniversary of Northern Star Bespoke Jewellery. From humble beginnings in Penarth, to now being an award-winning jeweller with two stores, we caught up with owner and jeweller Matthew Mullooly.
N
orthern Star Bespoke Jewellery opened its doors on Windsor Arcade back in 2008 and became Penarth’s first local, bespoke jeweller. Using the latest jewellery-based CAD software meant that they could design and create photo quality images of jewellery designs that could be approved before using timeless jewellery making techniques to create beautiful bespoke pieces of jewellery. 10
Most impressively, a few years ago, they invested in a 3D printer that allowed them to produce a 3D wax model of a design. This means that a design can be seen in 3D before it is cast in precious metal, eliminating undesirable surprises. Taking the guesswork out of jewellery design has filled customers and the team with the confidence to produce beautiful, unique, and personal jewellery time and time again.
www.penarthview.co.uk
Here’s Matthew’s take on the excitement of the past decade:
Looking back... “Where did the time go? Ten years just crept up and surprised us all. We have had such a great run in Penarth and we cannot thank our customers enough.”
On the awards... “Northern Star Bespoke Jewellery have won multiple awards both locally and nationally being acclaimed for ‘Best Jewellery’ and ‘Jeweller of the Year’. The awards speak for themselves, we are so proud to have been nominated and honoured to have been selected to win these awards. It makes what we do really special and motivates us further.”
The second shop... “It was time to evolve and open up our doors further along the Welsh coast. We have been met with open arms and the store in Swansea is picking up the pace and really coming into its own, welcoming in the Swansea community.”
The thanks go to...

STEPPING UP TO SIXTH FORM The IB Diploma is a global success story, Dr Griffiths, Principal of Westbourne School shares his insights into studying the IB Diploma as an alternative to A Levels.
W
hile most sixth formers around Wales have waited an entire summer for their A-level results, Westbourne sixth form students received their fantastic International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP) grades at the start of July. With all Westbourne graduates securing their firstchoice university by 8th July, a stress free summer ensued! But what is the IBDP? Well it is NOT the Welsh Bacc! It does in fact carry international status and is valued and accepted not only in every university in this country, but in every university throughout the world. Subsequently, many of our students have attained places at British Russell Group universities, and some have received acceptance into prestigious colleges in a number of different countries. IB students study a well-
14
rounded syllabus, highly suitable for those who would like to keep their university options as broad as possible, and for as long as possible. The final grading is points based: 24 points secures a pass, and 45 points is the maximum score. Oxford and Cambridge typically look for a score of 38 points and above for university entry. Half of the 2018 Westbourne IB graduates achieved 38+ points, which put the world’s best universities, including Oxbridge, well within reach. The grading system for the IBDP runs from 1-7 across the six subject choices, 7 being the highest and equivalent to an A* at A-level. To develop students as wellrounded individuals there are three additional areas which contribute to their overall points: Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). This aspect involves voluntary work, developing a healthy lifestyle, and creative
www.penarthview.co.uk
development (Westbourne students this year will be working with the NSPCC supporting fundraising at key events). In addition, the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) allows students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and an extended essay, which truly prepares students for the rigors of further education research. Access into university is only a small aspect of the IBDP, however, as the diploma is an incredible two-year journey for students. Not only are our sixth formers confident and independent, they also offer university admissions and employers a true insight into their abilities through applications and interviews.
“ Two years in this school with amazing teachers and an infinite amount of support and help has enabled me to achieve a grade in the IB that I did not think was possible. I couldn’t be happier to have served as the head girl in this school. I will miss all the support from teachers greatly both academically and personally! This is a tight knit family which I regret to leave but will always remember and keep in touch with. ”
WESTBOURNE SCHOOL For those who are interested in finding out more about the IBDP, we warmly invite parents and pupils to our open morning on 4th October 2018 between 09:30am - 11:00am. We also welcome private appointments and tours all year round.

TAKE TO THE OPEN ROAD The team at Victoria Garage, Penarth, are gearing up for autumn with a new set of road trips just a few taps away on your sat nav. North, Mid and South Wales – there’s something to tempt everyone to indulge in this magical, mysterious, magnificent country. Find tales of a woman who tricked the devil, sailors lost at sea and a castle designed to evoke Constantinople. Enjoy! Words by Meg Holland for Penarth View
Devil’s Bridge, the three bridges Photo by Peter Trimming

TAKE ME TO … DEVIL’S BRIDGE Famous for its turn in Hinterland/Y Gwyll, if you’re looking for something off the beaten track, a little village nestled in Ceredigion might be just what you’re looking for. Take a road trip up to Mid Wales and you’ll find yourself in Pontarfynach, or Devil’s Bridge, a village with an unusual road bridge that gives it its English name. With three separate bridges coexisting on top of each other, it’s an incredibly interesting place to visit. While you’re there, take a ride on the Vale of Rheidol Railway too.
TAKE ME TO … NASH POINT Take a road trip down the South Wales coast and you’ll find yourself amongst one of the most beautiful places the Vale of Glamorgan has to offer. Nash Point, a headland and beach, draws visitors with its 19th-century, grade II listed lighthouse up on the cliffs. Known as the last manned lighthouse in Wales, the history of Nash Point is as much of an interest as its delightful landscape.
TAKE ME TO … CAERNARFON History buffs are sure to find a trip to this 13th-century castle worth the 4-hour drive. Caernarfon Castle is a medieval waterfront fortress that once acted as the administrative centre of North Wales, and the sheer size of the structure certainly shows that. Although it is a long way from our South Wales coast, why not make the trip a little weekend getaway? Close by, you’ll find Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, the village with the longest place name in Europe, somewhere you have to visit at least once! INFO Set your sat-nav to SY23 3JL for Devil’s Bridge, CF61 1ZH for Nash Point Lighthouse and LL55 2AY for Caernarfon Castle. PenarthView #LovePenarth

ESCAPE ON A CITY BREAK
REYKJAVIK, ICELAND
Big on culture, rich in history and forever leading the way in art and fashion, Berlin is a trendsetting modern city that never sleeps.
BERLIN, GERMANY Visit in winter for festive Christmas markets and steaming cups of Glühwein (mulled wine). The annual Festival of Lights in October illuminates well-known landmarks around the city, from the Brandenburg Gate to the Cathedral and Concert Hall. The Berliners know how to throw a party, and the festival is no exception. You can view the lights easily on foot, although it is possible to hire a segway to get around or take a tour by bus or boat. For those with a head for heights, make a beeline for the city’s Fernsehturm for 360° views of the German capital.
24
Luxury: The Hotel de Rome was once the headquarters of the Dresdner bank. It’s now one of Berlin’s most prestigious Bebelplatz address, with a great roof terrace spa, and a pool located in the former jewel vault. Mid range: Sir Savigny Berlin is a smart, stylish hotel in the vibrant Art Nouveau district. Shoppers will love the proximity of this hotel to Kurfurstendamm, Berlin’s shopping oasis.
Home to some of the coolest cafés, bars and restaurants in Europe with a vibrant arts and music scene. No visit to Reykjavik would be complete without a swim in the famous Blue Lagoon geothermal pools. They’re right by the airport, so pop in for a dip here on your way to or from your flight. The Winter Lights Festival every February celebrates the nights getting shorter at last, after the long dark winter in the northernmost capital in the world. The whole city is illuminated with displays and you can even hope that nature’s greatest light show, the Aurora Borealis, will also make an impromptu appearance. For your best chances of seeing the Northern Lights visit between late September and April and take a cruise or bus tour away from the city.
On a budget: The Adina Apartments at Checkpoint Charlie offers spacious studio rooms with balconies in a residential district only a few minutes walk from Checkpoint Charlie.
www.penarthview.co.uk
Luxury: Reykjavik Centrum Hotel boasts an award winning restaurant, and also has its own Viking exhibition centre. Mid range: Skuggi Hotel offers minimal chic rooms and incredible breakfasts. It is located close to the numerous cafés and trendy boutiques on Laugavegur street. On a budget: Hotel Fron is a typical Icelandic townhouse in the heart of the city.
For a city of less than half a million people, Reykjavik is extraordinarily cosmopolitan.
For a winter city break that offers year round sunshine Marrakesh is only 4 hours away and offers a vibrant, colorful getaway.
MARRAKESH, MOROCCO You can explore the maze of streets in the old town’s medina and sample the exotic sights and sounds of Jemaa el-Fnaa – the large public square in the city centre filled with small merchants, hawkers, and entertainers which are popular with tourists & locals alike. At night the square is busy, bustling and frenetic, full of street artists, snake charmers, and many small pop-up eateries cooking fresh food over open fires. The atmosphere is electric. The up-and-coming Oasis Dance Festival in September showcases dance music’s biggest names and firmly puts Morocco on the international music map.
Luxury: Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakesh offers an exceptional level of luxury set amongst olive and orange groves overlooking the Atlas Mountains. Mid Range: Club Med Marrakesh La Palmeraie Hotel is only ten minutes from the city centre and is ideal for families, offering all-inclusive meals, drinks, activities and kids clubs. On a budget: Riad Jonan is a small boutique hotel in the walled Medina area. This traditional house is built around a central courtyard and is the perfect place for some peace and quiet away from the bustle of the city.

t first glance, you may not be able to tell the rich history behind Willmore’s 1938, the café nestled in the middle of Stanwell Road. However, stepping through the front door, you’ll see an entirely different picture emerge. Adorned with film reels and old school cinema memorabilia, Willmore’s 1938 makes sure to embrace the history of its building. The Washington Luxury Theatre (main image) was opened in 1938 by the Willmore brothers (inset) who hailed from London, but their love of the town didn’t start there. Opening Penarth’s first cinema in 1910 (the Penarth Premier Picture Palace on Glebe Street), Oliver and Laurence (Jack) Willmore were a household name by the time they moved to the Windsor Kinema in 1914. Their cinema empire culminated in the building of the Washington Luxury Theatre, and their story continues to live on in the family-run café, Willmore’s 1938.

EASY TREATS FOR KIDS
eas Spooktacular id and for Halloween bonfire part ies
Chocolate fruit slices
Hot apple pie punch
Pop some apple slices or clementine segments on lollipop sticks to dunk in chocolate, caramel or peanut butter. Decorate with nuts, 100’s and 1000’s, coconut or chocolate sprinkles for a quick and easy treat. Take it a step further by creating fruit and marshmallow skewers. Minimal effort and it’s something the kids can do safely.
Put some cinnamon, ground cloves, nutmeg, apple juice and vanilla extract in a large saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer. Add vanilla ice cream and whisk vigorously with a balloon whisk until melted and combined with the hot apple juice. For extra warmth, add a splash of dark rum (adults only, of course!)
Cheese stars
Slime bug cups
Add some grated cheddar cheese to a sheet of puff pastry and use star-shaped cookie cutters to make these cheesy goodies. Brush the surface of each one with some milk for colour, and you can add some extra toppings of your choice. What about poppy seeds, dried oregano and sesame seeds?
Prepare some lime jelly following the pack instructions. Pour the mix into some glasses before adding some gummy bugs and worms. Leave to set. Then just crush some chocolate cookies to make a soil layer and add a few more bugs. Yummy!

WASTE NOT WANT NOT
Apple picking Photo by Nathan Hulsey
We have all heard about food waste, but many of us will associate food waste with food that is purchased from supermarkets or independent shops. However, there are many fruit trees around that will remain unpicked, either in people’s gardens/ allotments or growing wild in hedgerows, which is also wasted food.
Words by Clare Williams from Penylan Preserves for Penarth View I know I am guilty of this. I have a huge old bramley apple tree and three greengage trees in my allotment that I never fully pick. This is down to not being able to reach the fruit or just not being able to store the fruit effectively before it spoils. Although lots of the soft fruits have passed this year, there are still apples, pears, late season plums and damsons left to harvest. 30
This year has been a particularly difficult year for soft fruit, due to the cold April where the frost damaged the skins on apples and plums. Then with the very hot weather we have had, the lack of water has meant the fruit hasn’t grown as large as it normally does at this time of year. I have again noticed this in our allotment where the apples are only half the size they were this time last year.

Plums, damson and gages need a wash and soak in cold water for around twenty minutes, so any little unwanted guests will float to the surface. After their soak, dry by spreading out on paper towels or tea towels then add to containers or bags to freeze. Add the type of fruit, date and weight of the fruit to the container you use, that way you can make sure you use the oldest fruit first. For apples and pears, I choose to prepare by skinning, coring and chopping as I want them for later. Some types of apple can discolour very quickly so you can use a water bath with lemon juice to try and keep discolouration to a minimum. Again, once prepared add to your chosen freezer container adding name of fruit, date and weight. For those of you who may not know what a damson is, here’s some information. The fruits ripen late in the season which is normally around late September, middle of October. Damsons can be enjoyed straight from the tree, although as the season is quite short much of the crop is typically preserved, be it freezing, made into jam, pickled, or helping flavour spirits. If you are lucky enough to have a soft fruit tree available, here is one recipe so that you can enjoy the fruit later in the year. / 1
Prick the damsons, using a fork or cocktail stick.

Add the damsons to a large airtight vessel (I use a 1100ml jar and put cling film under the lid to help the seal).

Then add the sugar and gin to the vessel.

Close the lid and shake to help dissolve the sugar. It may take a few days for all sugar to dissolve.

Once most of the sugar is dissolved place in a dark cool place.

4 CORNERS: WEST WALES
Gower, by Jamie Chapman
I
t’s hard to deny the love for food that we have in Wales, and with some of the best food produce to tickle the most critical of tastebuds, it’s no surprise that we like to shout about it from the tops of our mountains! In the first of our Four Corners of Wales feature, we take a look towards West Wales to find out what delicacies await. Just over an hour away at Penclawdd on the Gower peninsular, you can see history unfold, where rakes and riddles are still being used to pluck mouthwatering cockles from the mudflats of the famous coastline. Continuing with the sea theme, West Wales has an abundance of fishers who handline catch fresh sea bass, mackerel and pollock. Ideal with some veggies and white sauce this autumn! If you fancy something a little extra from the sea, look out for mermaid confetti – a special blend of seaweed and salt. For more plant-based foods we turn to a Welsh favourite, laverbread. The high-protein, low-calorie, mineral and vitamin-rich superfood is derived from laver seaweed. This delicacy also has traditional links to our past, nourishing miners who took a breather during their lunch breaks at the coal face.
Cockles
Shallow fry the cockles in some garlic, a handful of parsley and a good glug of white wine. Garnish with half a lemon.
Mermaid confetti
Dried, toasted laver seaweed mixed with sea salt for an all round deeper seasoning. Use on your eggs, seafood, salads or soups.
Laverbread
Buy locally, or make your own (if you’re adventurous). Have it with cockles and bacon on some thick brown bread. 32

Restaurant James Sommerin is taking bookings now for Christmas and New Year, to celebrate with a bang.
Cinnamon and apple sponge, with salted caramel cream cheese frosting by Charlotte Williams at Lily’s Bake Box
SERVES 12-16
SPONGE
SALTED CARAMEL
6 large eggs 400g self raising flour 400g butter (softened) 400g caster sugar 1 tin of apple segments without the juice (the apples can be swapped out for pumpkin puree if desired) 3 tablespoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla paste
200g caster sugar 120ml double cream 90g butter 1 teaspoon sea salt / 1
Add the sugar to a saucepan and boil over a medium heat until the sugar has turned a beautiful amber colour. (Keep an eye on this as you don’t want it to burn)
/ 1
Grease and line two deep 6-inch cake tins and pre heat the oven to 170 degrees.
/ 2
/ 2
Start with the sponge. Mix the butter and sugar together to form a light, fluffy, creamy texture.
Remove from the heat and add the double cream, mixing quickly as you do. Be very careful as the sugar will be immensely hot and when you add the cream it bubbles up, but this is normal.
/ 3
Add the eggs one at a time and mix well to ensure they are incorporated into the sugar and butter mixture.
/ 3
/ 4
Mix in the flour and then add the vanilla paste.
Once combined, start to add the butter a tablespoon at a time and mix continually until the butter has fully melted.
/ 4
/ 5
Drain the juice from the tinned apple segments, coat them in a bit of flour to stop them sinking in the sponge and fold them into the batter.
Add the salt and transfer the salted caramel carefully to a glass jar to cool completely.
/ 6
Finally add your cinnamon.
/ 7
Divide between the two tins and bake in the centre of a pre heated oven for 40–50 minutes (they take a bit longer due to the apples). Once baked take out of the oven, let cool slightly in the tins, remove, and then leave to cool completely on a cooling rack.
34
CREAM CHEESE FROSTING 80g of cream cheese (full fat) 113g softened butter 1 cup icing sugar (sifted) 3 tablespoons salted caramel / 1
Add the butter to the mixer and beat until light and soft. Then add the cream cheese and icing sugar and mix thoroughly. A whisk attachment or equivalent is best for this step.
/ 2
Finally add your salted caramel, you can add more than has been advised depending on the taste you would like.
www.penarthview.co.uk
ASSEMBLY / 1
Slice your two sponges in half horizontally so you end up with 4 layers.
/ 2
Start with your first layer and spread a generous helping of the cream cheese, then add the next layer on top. Repeat the process until all layers are assembled.
/ 3
Finish the top of the cake with a layer of cream cheese and decorate with whatever you would like. I’ve used chopped apple and salted caramel.
/ 4
For a semi-naked effect, smooth the cream cheese frosting around the sides with a palette knife.

LOCAL FOOD FESTIVAL
Words by Will Summers, Penarth View Co-editor Since 2011, Penarth Food Festival has become a yearly staple and a go-to event for food lovers from Penarth and beyond. Having started with an idea, a garden space, and a donation from each stall holder, the festival now attracts the bigs names in Penarth and beyond. With the aim of presenting the fabulous independent retailers we have in our local area, this year the food festival promises to be bigger and better. The project was founded by Gwyrddio Penarth Greening, who also organise the Shop Penarth scheme and Plastic-free Penarth, designed to promote effective ways to reduce our carbon footprint and sustainable ways to live. It’s no surprise that this year one of the biggest themes will focus on reducing, reusing and recycling our waste effectively. As lead organiser Anthony Slaughter tells us, this year the festival is going one step
further to promote alternative methods to single-use plastic. So, what can you expect? The popular regulars that make the food festival great are coming back, says Anthony, as well as some exciting new businesses, all within a 50-mile radius. There’ll be a showcase of food and drink with everything from cheese, meats, exciting vegetarian and vegan options, as well as offerings from the Vale of Glamorgan Brewery and Old Cogan Hill Farm – just to name a few! The festival is situated in the beautiful gardens of Kymin House, at the end of summer so we can catch the last of the sun before it melts into autumn. With a summer fête feel, arts and crafts stalls, and even a petting zoo, a visit to the festival is a must this September. Bring your family, tell your friends and enjoy what we have to offer whilst feeling good in the knowledge that you can make sustainable choices. What’s not to love?

AWARD-WINNING COMPASS
L
ooking back at 2018 so far, it’s been a cookbook of success for Craig, Marcus and the Compass Coffee team. It’s wonderful to see our friends get the recognition they deserve. With the most recent trophy added to the shelf coming from the Welsh Enterprise Awards in August, it’s lovely to see that the team still work hard to provide an excellent service. When we asked the gents what it felt like to win Best Upscale Café 2018 the sense of pride in every aspect of their café shines through. Craig and Marcus are quite cool about it though, simply being pleased that the hard work is paying off. It’s not hard to see why Compass is a success. Delicious confectionery wakes the senses and that’s even before you taste their coffee. With products sourced locally and from household names, as well as breakfast menus to satisfy every taste, we can’t wait to see what’s coming up next! What we love about Compass isn’t just its great quality food, but its team as well. Ideally located in Penarth’s marina, it’s the perfect opportunity to take our Cairn terrier, Winston, for a walk and enjoy a delicious breakfast served by a team who know their customers – it’s lush! You’ll be hard-pushed to find anything not to love. We hope to see you down there! 38

THE HEART OF THE HOME

Words by Ceri Hill, Chalkhouse Interiors
his substantial, traditional home in a leafy suburb close to the city centre offered excellent accommodation but lacked a kitchen where the owners, their children, and extended family could gather to enjoy meals together. By knocking through an underused dining room at the back of the house and extending out to the side, a new, large family room was created. With elegant French bay windows and doors onto the garden in the dining area, and with contemporary full height glass doors from the kitchen and skylights in the new extension,

the area is now flooded with light even on the gloomiest of days. By changing the layout of the adjoining awkward utility room and cloakroom as well, we were able to make much better use of the space. This allowed us to create a stunning kitchen as the focal point of the new room with a feature chimney breast, a large island, two larders and a capacious fridge freezer. Seating at the back of the island gives the children a place to sit and do their homework whilst meals are being prepared. The kitchen is painted in a pale, warm, neutral shade with a darker tone on the

With three small boys in the family, the client was keen to include a breakfast cupboard in the design, a place to keep all the cereals and breads, along with a built-in microwave, hidden out of sight behind the double doors. With a small prep sink and hot tap alongside, this also makes the ideal place to store teas, coffees and mugs. Another full-size larder unit next to the American fridge freezer, complete with spice racks and oak drawers, gives ample storage for other produce. Off the main kitchen is a bespoke pantry that doubles up as a utility room and spare kitchen. The client’s mother is also a keen cook so this is very much her domain, with a range of ovens and a cute Belfast sink at her disposal, whilst open shelving provides plenty of space for specialist ingredients and kitchen gadgets. The unusual geometric tiles in this room provide added interest and a practical floor finish.

MIFFY MEETS: ANNIE & LOLO
B
arry High street has a new duo, Annie and Lois, whose shop simply catches your eye and makes you stop. Miffy Shaw has teamed up with Penarth View to meet exciting new people who share a love for interior design. This autumn Miffy meets Annie and Lois, from new shop Annie & Lolo, to find out more about how they began building their brand and what inspires them to showcase a collection of beautiful trinkets, accessories and interior creations for your home.
Hi ladies! Congratulations! So, tell us, how is the new shop? A & L: Hi! It’s fabulous! We’ve met lots of lovely people who’ve come into the shop and we've had some brilliant feedback so far!
How did Annie and Lolo start? A: We wanted to create a brand that is like a highstreet Etsy, but also a social hub for local makers and suppliers, and where our customers, friends and family can gather around our table in a friendly atmosphere. We’ve both got young families, so Friday
42
afternoons are ‘mums on the run’ and we bring everyone back to the shop! L: We've always wanted to work together since we met, and the idea of Annie and Lolo came through really quickly. We wanted to show people something different and we wanted it to be in Barry. The shop came through quickly as well! We were really lucky. The lady who used the space before us was moving out boxes as I was driving past one day, so I went in to have a look and rang Annie straight away to say ‘get over here quick!’.
Who is the shopper? L: We both are! A: We’ve been really lucky with our suppliers as well. Some saw us on Instagram and approached us, which we're really happy with.
Do you have a trend in mind or do you allow the products to catch your eye? A: I think it's more what catches our eye. We received an order once which made us think ‘let’s stop trying to think about the bigger trends and let’s order what we love’ whether that’s from wholesalers or independents. Mine and Lois’ tastes are quite similar, which is great! L: Yeah, it’s also great to sell as well, as you’ve got a passion for the products you have and it’s something that we would have in our home.
Do you have a favourite item? L: Uh, that’s a hard one! I love that we have a lot of products that are from local independent makers and it’s really nice when you

can say to a customer, this was made by a great maker who is based just down the road. A: Yes, that’s right! I think for me I’m loving jewellery at the moment but it’s so hard to choose one thing. I love it all. L: Even down to the boxes of matches we have. We love it all!
What exciting plans does Annie & Lolo have for the future? A: There’s definitely big plans for the future! L: We’re working on our website at the moment which is exciting for people who want to buy from us, but are a bit far away. We’ve also got some conversations starting with suppliers in Spain and France with some lovely unique products to offer to our customers. A: We’ve also got some brilliant workshops. Our next workshop is 'Meet the Makers' with Gareth who owns Old Faithful, which showcases essentials oils. It’s great because workshops like this attract people who are really passionate about their products and will spend the time with their customers.
If you were a fly on the wall, where would you be? A: Life’s too short for one wall! L: Somewhere hot where I can people-watch. DETAILS Annie & Lolo can be found on Barry's High Street. Pop them a visit, and let them know Penarth View sent you. / 100 High St, Barry CF62 7DS / 01446 749601
LET’S TALK ABOUT TEXTURE! Texture is a firm favourite of mine when it comes to styling interiors. I love incorporating different types when designing a room. You want a room to be cosy, interesting and tangible. Textures make a room pop and should not be overlooked. I have a few favourites that are bang on trend this season.
Concrete Concrete is currently very popular and a good material to use in any modern or rustic design. It looks great as flooring, worktops or sinks for an industrial touch. Don’t want to go all out? Try a concrete light pendant or some plant pots.
Plants A room can look bare without some greenery. Try grouping plants of different sizes and textures together to make them stand out. Monsteria with their big, bright, waxy leaves; some spiked cacti; or the bobbly texture of a string of pearls should do the trick!
Wood I love old wood! Anything reclaimed, reused or recycled. A one-off piece of antique furniture or some rough old scaffolding boards, I love it. Wood adds depth and character to a room and is very tactile.

DESIGN YOUR DREAM KITCHEN
Autumn is a great time to start planning large scale home improvements. It takes months to prepare for a successful renovation. So, if you want to start building when the sun is shining, you’d best get started.
S
Words by Jo Buckerfield, Your Space Living
tructural changes to homes, such as open plan kitchens or rear extensions, need approval from the local authority. Depending on workload, the approval process can take six to eight weeks to complete.
LOOK CAREFULLY FOR THE RIGHT ARCHITECT Of course, you’ll need some plans in the first place and finding the right architect to draw those plans can be tricky. Where do you start? I suppose there’s Google, but I prefer recommendations. Friends, relatives and neighbours are a great resource, so ask around and take your time. Finding someone you can trust is a process that shouldn’t be rushed. Whatever route you take, all professional architects must be registered by the Architects Registration Board. 46
THE DEVIL’S IN THE DETAIL Architects usually deal with the bigger picture of a house development. When it comes to the kitchen, they won’t focus on the details. Understanding where the oven might go in relation to the hob, fridge or sink is the job of a kitchen designer. When it comes to kitchen remodels in open plan extensions, you need a specialist who understands spacial design. They recognise the dynamics of a room just by looking at a 2D plan. From that same plan they can visualise the best way to position the furniture and appliances. A room should flow from one ‘zone’ to the next and a true spacial designer will look at a wide range of lifestyle factors before coming up with a suitable scheme. It’s all about balancing form, functionality
www.penarthview.co.uk
and practicality. It sounds obvious but I’ve seen plenty of kitchen disasters that could have been avoided. All it needed was a little bit of planning.
YOU’LL BE NEEDING A “SPACIAL” DESIGNER For a real specialist you should be looking at the independent kitchen retailers and avoiding the large multiple stores or DIY chains. Again, as with the architect search, your friends and family will be your best resource. Look for great recommendations and evidence of their previous work. They also need to be backed by reputable suppliers so that the kitchen they help you design actually turns up ready for installation. If you’ve already found your architect, they may have a designer they can recommend. If the plan is to have them work together from the beginning, it helps if they already have a good working relationship. I work with a number of architects in the Cardiff area and the finished homes always benefit from a healthy collaboration.
PREPARE FOR SUCCESS Preparing a detailed set of plans is vital. Good builders can follow good plans perfectly. Unfortunately, the best builder in the world will struggle with vague plans that are missing vital details. This could cost you dearly. If you’re hoping to have your extended kitchen ready for summer 2019, the time to start planning is now. If you employ design experts with a proven track record, you’ll be well on your way to a fabulous renovation that will change the way you live in your home. I’m excited for you already.

AUTUMN FASHION
INE GRAB MORE TRENDS ONL hion 2fas /pv3 ww w.bit.ly
Words by Claire Jacklin for Penarth View
So autumn is here – how did that happen? Life seems to be going at such a fast pace and I’d like it to slow down – quite a lot really! The new season is looking great, we are seeing some fun patterns, prints and textures arriving, and I’m highlighting a few items and trends that stand out from the rest.
Leopard print vest top £28 from Oasis
48
Walk on the wild side
Red leopard print dress £36 from Next
This dress caught my eye for colour, but also price – a great ‘easy-to-wear’ dress for the transitional months.
This Oasis vest top can be super useful as a layering piece. Simply pop a denim jacket over for coverage or wear it under a v-neck jumper to show a splash of the print. It’s your way of nodding to a trend, without going full on! Often it is best to opt for a trend in a small quantity.
www.penarthview.co.uk
Shoes £85 from Dune
Silver bag £69.95 from White Stuff
Mar vellous metalics
I loved this easy-chic bag from White Stuff. There is nothing better than a bag that you can just chuck everything in to, without having to fiddle with tricky buckles or straps – who has time for that?!
As always, if you would like to have a style session with myself, you can book in to see me for a one-hour Style Consultation to see where I can best help you. It may be that you need a wardrobe refresh or you wish to know which colours suit you the most. A Style Consultation gives us the opportunity to chat through your needs and helps us decide which is the best session for you. All details of the services I offer are on my website. You may also see an 80s vibe running though the collections and, yes, this is deliberate. Think double breasted blazers and power dressing but also the return of the batwing jumper. I loved them then and I love them now.

Yellow ‘coatigan’ £139 from John Lewis
Batwing top £98 from John Lewis
Polka dot dress £49 from Topshop
I love this dress by Topshop. To wear for work, just sew up the split seam and away you go! For evening wear, keep the split and get your heels on!
This wool blend ‘coatigan’ ticks all the boxes for texture, colour and effortless comfort.

BROWS, BROWS, BROWS
W
Words by Amy Adams for Penarth View
hy are we all so obsessed with beautiful brows? Is it simply a matter of aesthetics? Audrey, in the 50s. Cindy, in the 90s. Or does it go deeper? A bright red lip was the symbol of femininity and womanly power during WWII. So, do gorgeous brows carry the same worth through time? Cleopatra and Nefertiti might agree, both sporting beautifully groomed arches using a compound of ground minerals and animal fat to enhance their beauty and highlight hierarchy. Skip forward to Roman times and the ultimate symbol of intelligence and class was to paint in a full ‘uni-brow’. Imagine if this was the trend today! Fortunately, modern icons are perfect leaders in the brow stakes, with Kate, Meghan and Cara all showing us how it’s done. Brows are centre stage to many a beauty regime, from a quick swish of brow mascara keeping unruly hairs in check; bespoke tinting for a temporary fix; right up to semipermanent options using advanced techniques like microblading. From my early days starting out as a professional make-up artist, women of all ages always benefit from a beautifully groomed
50
brow: to highlight the eyes, restore (lost) definition, provide instant ‘lift’, and give a healthy and cared-for appearance. Not to mention the practical benefits of having brows that don’t ‘fall off’ part way through the day, waking up with gorgeous brows is a bonus, too! For some women, a groomed brow goes beyond vanity and becomes necessity. Alongside ageing, a number of conditions can also cause brow hairs to become thin or even stop growing altogether. I have had the privilege of working with many women who have needed ‘new brows’ due to cancer, alopecia and thyroid imbalances to name a few. Offering women a way of restoring their features and boosting their confidence is a real highlight of my career. Wherever you’re at with your own brow story, I am your personal ‘Brow Couturier’ and whatever your age, hair colour and desired look, there is a treatment that’s perfect for you. Come for a consultation to discuss the different options available to you at my private aesthetics salon, A Brush with Beauty, in Penarth.

Mudlarking in the Bay
MEMORIES OF A MUDLARK If you talk to any of the older inhabitants who grew up around the docks area of Cardiff and Penarth, they would tell you of times, spent playing in the mud and swimming in the streams at low tide of what is now Cardiff Bay.
Words by Jerry Cross and David Worssam for Penarth View Whether it was a growing sense of the potential dangers involved in such pastimes, or whether it was computer games, by mid 1980 the ‘Bay’ had become a ‘no go area’. The only inhabitants at low tide were the wading birds. Motivated by the fact that Cardiff Bay was about to become permanently under water we spent several months, amid discarded supermarket trolleys, unwanted televisions and the occasional stolen handbag, recording the remains of a sailing ship known locally as the ‘Louisa’ that lay just off the banks of the Ely. Having completed that project, our attention was turned to what else may be hidden out there in the mud. 56
A fear of disappearing into the reputed bottomless pools of liquid mud kept our curiosity in check until a chance visit to the museum of Welsh Life revealed a curious artefact known as a ‘mud horse’. This item was used by a fisherman from Rhymney to work his nets set across the shore of the Bristol Channel. Indeed, they are still used by fishermen in Somerset today. Resembling a toboggan on which one could lean on, it was possible to travel over the mud flats with little danger of sinking into them. A pair of identical sledges were quickly made and we set of to explore the vast area of gloopy mud of the Ely and Taff estuary. With growing confidence we made
www.penarthview.co.uk
forays into the middle of the bay, coming across remnants of mooring buoys, discarded anchors, and picking up fragments of crockery bearing the insignia of the shipping companies that had used Penarth and Cardiff docks in their heyday. Not unsurprising were the large number of skulls of unfortunate sheep that had met an untimely end further up the Taff and Ely rivers and had been washed down by the current. Also of interest were the large number of empty champagne bottles half buried in the mud. Possibly from the well-to-do yachts using the Bay ? Once we had negotiated the salt marshes and got our trusty sledges onto the flats, progress was surprisingly easy, the mud being only a few inches thick overlaying a bed of very firm clay. An obvious target for us were the remains of what seemed to be a small trading ketch clearly visible from Windsor Esplanade. Pictures were duly taken and remains scanned for any ‘treasure’ that might still be there. Sadly there was none. Despite numerous enquiries around the area, the identity of this vessel still remains a mystery. Probably the most interesting area in the bay lay off the main channel to the entrance of Cardiff docks. Here lay the
timbers of a very sizeable yacht and next to those there were the remains of what could have been a pilot cutter. And to make things even more interesting, there lay a couple of anti aircraft shell detonators! Thinking that these remains were of great historic interest and maybe Cardiff’s Mary Rose, the exact position was reported to the Development Company and… nothing happened. After the impoundment of the Bay we watched the dredger at work in this area, and as well as wondering what artefacts may be being brought up only to be discarded somewhere out to sea, we were also hoping that the detonators were the only ordnance to be found in that area of the Bay. The Bay at low tide was truly a remarkable landscape, always changing depending on the state of the tide. It was our domain. No one dared to venture out there, so we shared it with the oystercatchers, shell ducks and curlews. Sadly apart from the recording of the sailing ship ‘Louisa’ no other survey was done on the Cardiff and Penarth mudflats. When you consider that the Taff and Ely estuary was used from before Roman times, then there is a high probability that the mud contains some very interesting artefacts, now hidden forever.

A REVIVAL OF A WNO FAVOURITE
A
Interview by Will Summers, Penarth View Co-editor
fter she spent the last 10 years as the resident principal soloist with the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, we caught up with effervescent Tara Erraught as she makes her Welsh National Opera debut this autumn performing the lead, Angelina, in Rossini’s opera, La Cenerentola. With the original Cinderella fairytale, colourful costumes, elaborate sets as well as a sparkling international cast, we ask Tara all about the opera and her journey from The Royal Irish Academy of Music to the WNO.
Hi Tara! Thanks for speaking to us today, how is life in Germany? Very well thank you! I've been working at the Bayerische Staatsoper [Bavarian State Opera House] for the past 10 years and it's been a great experience seeing how an opera house works. I'm also very excited to be performing closer to home. 58
We imagine you'll begin rehearsals for La Cenerentola soon? What are you looking forward to the most about performing here? Yes, it's come around so quickly. I'm really looking forward to getting to know the Welsh audiences, and I'm so excited as it's my WNO debut. I've heard so many stories about how wonderful it is to work and perform in Wales. I can't wait!
We've heard that La Cenerentola is based on the classic Cinderella story with a twist. For those who don't know a lot about Rossini's opera, how would you describe the story? It's absolutely wonderful! Yes, it's based on the wonderful original fairy tale book of Cinderella, and has an evil stepfather and a good godfather. What's so great about La Cenerentola is how colourful it is, both in costume, set design as well as performance. The story reaches and speaks to everyone and has some hilarious scenes. It'll definitely hook you from the first note of the overture. Rossini wasn't afraid to add some darkness into the opera as well.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW FOR PENARTH VIEW
How does it feel to be playing a character that's so well known?
What makes an opera performance so special?
Amazing! Most of the season I've been playing boys because of my [mezzo soprano] voice. It's so nice to be playing a leading female role. It's also every girl's dream, right?! I can tell you that the story never gets stale and I can't wait to see the audience's reaction to Angelina and the rest of the cast. It's also great to show how Angelina encapsulates modern day 'girl power'. In the opera she knows what she wants and asks to go to the ball.
Ah, the whole thing is spectacular! For me, every night the audience is different. It means that the atmosphere constantly changes, and that changes the way you and the cast perform and react. I just love that no two nights are the same!
We've seen some of the costume designs by Joan GuillĂŠn, which look absolutely fabulous. What do you think audiences can expect visually from La Cenerentola? A spectacle of colour and fun. The story is hilariously funny and the costumes and set really capture that. The whole production is so special and incredibly relatable. It's a great cast and there's so much to see on stage. I don't want to give too much away though!
How long have you been singing? It all started when I was 10, and my parents took me to see my first opera on a family holiday. I was hooked. I started getting a magazine which included a DVD of the opera performance and libretto. I figured out early that this was what I wanted to do all the way through school. After I graduated from The Royal Irish Academy of Music, I spent 10 years in Bayerische Staatsoper, as an apprentice and principal soloist learning my craft.
Do you have any advice for anyone who has never seen an opera before, or for those who want to sing? Go and see one! It really is brilliant! La Cenerentola is a brilliant first opera because it's short. The storyline is completely relatable. We all know someone who has been through a tough time and the opera captures the kindness of Angelina and the good in people. For those who want to sing, there are some great community and professional opera companies out there to enjoy and to have a huge impact! I love being in vocal and choral societies back home so would encourage everyone to keep on going!
What exciting plans do you have on the horizon? There are loads! I'm looking forward to travelling around a little bit, performing in Don Giovanni, Hansel and Gretel and I've got a few symphonic debuts to look forward to as well as debuts with the WNO.
Thank you so much for talking to us. It's been an absolute pleasure! We can't wait to come and see you and the cast. Before you go, if you had to pick 3 desert island discs, what would they be? Oh, that's a tough one... 1. Frank Sinatra (legend); 2. It's between Neil Diamond and Ella Fitzgerald; 3. Jessye Norman.
DETAILS Rossini's La Cenerentola will be performed by the WNO cast from 5 to 7 October in Wales Millenium Centre. Tickets available from Wales Millennium Centre. 59 PenarthView #LovePenarth / www.wmc.org.uk / 029 2063 6464
ARMISTICE DAY. 100 YEARS. In Flanders Fields by John McCrae
I
n Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

n a year that represents the armistice of World War One, artists, businesses and members of Penarth’s community are organising tributes to those who went to war. With events, installations and projects that are rich in Penarth history, here’s a few to look out for this November.
32 32 is a community project focusing on the 32 lives lost in WW1 belonging to the Parish of Penarth All Saints. With artists, Nina Lazarou, Cathy O’Doherty and Angelina Hall working with businesses around the town to commemorate the armistice of WW1, look out for window displays that pay tribute to those who gave their lives over 100 years ago.
Providing workshops and encouraging local community groups, air and sea cadets, ex-servicemen, schools and veterans to create tributes using wireworks, glass and other media. Arts workshops will take place during September, with window displays in place from early October until Armistice Day.
REMEMBERING CAPTAIN RICHARD WAIN AND SERGEANT SAMUEL PEARSE On 9 November at 11am, two commemorative stones will be laid in Penarth’s Garden of Remembrance in Alexandra Park for the two men who were awarded the posthumous Victoria Cross for their service. Headteacher, Jonathan Hicks of St. Cyres School is organising the inter-generational ceremony, which will also carry on into the Paget Rooms from noon, featuring re-enactments from the Western Front Association alongside performances from St. Cyres school choir and wind band.

ARTES MUNDI
Following the success of Artes Mundi 7, awarded to John Akomfrah, Artes Mundi is pleased to announce the shortlist for the eighth edition of the UK’s leading biennial art prize, Artes Mundi 8. The biennial Cardiffbased prize, worth £40,000, will be awarded in January 2019 following a four-month exhibition.
T
he shortlist was selected from over 450 nominations spanning 86 countries and includes five of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists, whose works explore what it means to be human. The Artes Mundi 8 shortlist will take part in a major exhibition which will run from 27th October 70
2018 to 24th February 2019 at National Museum Cardiff. Anna Boghiguian’s work was first shown in Catherine David’s Contemporary Arab Representations, beginning in 2003 in Rotterdam. Attracting much attention and acclaim, her drawings also stirred political debate and controversy, especially

Each of her projects can be seen as a platform offered to members of political minority to elaborate, narrate, and share strategies and discourses of resistance. Otobong Nkanga ‘s work “In Wetin You Go Do?” is part of the permanent collection at Tate Modern. Her work explores the social and topographical changes of her environment, observes their inherent complexities and understands how resources such as soil and earth, and their potential values, are subject to regional and cultural analysis. Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s video installations and feature films have won him widespread recognition and numerous festival prizes, including two prizes from the Cannes Film Festival. Themes reflected in his films include dreams, nature, sexuality, and Western perceptions of Thailand and Asia. Karen MacKinnon, Artes Mundi’s Director and Curator, said:
“ Artes Mundi’s unique focus on the human condition enables us to bring together artists from all over the world whose art can inspire and challenge the way we see and inhabit our world. The ebb and flow of their ideas, the different perspectives and terms of engagement, suggest we are in for an extraordinary Artes Mundi 8. ”
DETAILS Artes Mundi brings together five international artists who directly engage with everyday life through their practice. It opens at National Museum Cardiff on 25 October, and the exhibition runs until 24 February 2019. The prize is announced 24 January 2019. IT'S AN ONLINE AFFAIR
H
ave you ever wanted to pursue your own business? Perhaps selling your own homemade crafts or trading in antiques? With the rise of the internet, it’s never been easier, or has it? We’ve met some of the businesses who use Masons Self Storage facilities to ask them why they chose to take their businesses online. Over the past 5 years, millionaire businesses registered as sellers on eBay in the UK has jumped over 50%! Research shows that Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs), are choosing to sell their products through online marketplaces over traditional brick and mortar sites. Masons have seen a 40% rise in online sellers using their storage facilities since 2016. Maintaining their great relationships with professionals such as solicitors, accountants and 74
medical practitioners who needed a secure space to store files and archives, over the past 8 years, the Masons group has seen a rapid growth in online sellers who require a different type of service. Working with their clients, Masons responded to support their emerging business customers and invested over ÂŁ1,200,000 to create a secure, high-tech, 24/7 access storage facility with a brand new Business Zone, wider corridors and a large ESCORTA lift. They also provide collection and delivery services with pallet and forklift trucks, as well as, a Business Lounge offering customers the ability to manage their business whilst onsite with complimentary WiFi, work stations and refreshments. Ideally located in the Vale, just 10 minutes from Cardiff Bay and Penarth, their business sellers also get to cut out the commute!

Haya Ltd is owned by Andrew, who provides quality remote control toys and has been with Masons for ten years. Andrew was drawn to Masons because of the great location, and the 24/7 access, which is particularly helpful at Christmas! Whilst online marketplaces are great for connecting businesses with consumers across the world, Andrew has found that this can lead to its own set of challenges, such as distribution and postage.

Alicja started, b4beds Ltd back in 2011 and was also drawn to the easy access at Masons Self Storage as well as the use of the fork lift truck for her deliveries. Alicja started her business when her sister was pregnant and finding it hard to find the perfect cot at the right price. Alicja looked online and found a supplier that was perfect and affordable. Using eBay, she began to sell 15-20 cots a week. Now, she sells that a day!
IF YOU’VE HAD AN IDEA FOR AN ONLINE BUSINESS AND ARE READY TO JUMP INTO THE WORLD OF SELLING THROUGH ONLINE MARKETPLACES, WHY NOT SEE HOW THE TEAM OVER AT MASONS SELF STORAGE CAN HELP YOU JOIN THE RANKS OF ONLINE SELLERS?

Jimmy started Leake’s Luxuries from his grandmother’s garage in 2016, selling a wide selection of children's toys, games and accessories at an affordable price. Initially selling through Facebook and Instagram, he needed to take his business to the next level, as his range and customer base grew. At Masons Self Storage, the Business Lounge, quality security and out of hours access 7-days a week were a big pull for Jimmy and he hasn't looked back since!

PATHOGENS AND PARASITES
Words by Angharad Evans for Penarth View
What can be a babysitter, a servant, a chauffeur and a personal bodyguard all at the same time? Us! This may very well surprise you, but there are ways in which parasites use us for their survival. This is because a parasite is an organism which relies on a host for its survival. Very often, we end up being their host!
PATHOGENS AND PARASITES Due to the strains and habits of modern life, our bodies are not as able to cope with the pathogens and parasites we’re exposed to which can be the root 76
cause of so very many common symptoms such as constipation, IBS, fatigue, anxiety, anaemia, sleep disturbances, and skin conditions such as eczema, hives, rash, itchy scalp and rosacea.
DRAW A LINE IN THE SAND There are many ways in which we can introduce parasites to our bodies. Do you walk about your

TES TIPS FOR STOPPING PAR ASI s site ara 32p ww w.bit.ly/pv garden bare footed? Do you eat undercooked meats such as pork? How about eating unwashed, unpeeled fruit and vegetables? There are many innocent ways of introducing parasites to our bodies, and, of course, habits to change so that we consciously create barriers to prevent this. There are natural ways of banishing these pathogens.
NATURAL TREATMENT Therefore, if you are suffering from tiredness, IBS, insomnia or if you are you frustrated at being told to ‘put up’ with your symptoms, then surely this new approach will interest you? My take on natural therapy combines natural products and a diet plan to free you of these debilitating symptoms by addressing the cause and restoring your body back to health. One client who had been suffering from IBS testifies to the treatment’s success:
“ Angharad will get to the root cause of all your health issues. The results speak for themselves. The treatment I have experienced has worked wonders for myself. I have seen improvements in all areas of my health. ” To date, I have treated 120 clients in my clinic in Penarth. Through my personalised treatment, I will identify the cause of your symptoms, and, together, we will work at restoring your health and general wellbeing.

ill and I were roped in, by peer pressure, and by the promise of an ice cold cider at the end. We had no idea what we would face, but we knew it involved ten miles, twenty obstacles, and plenty of mud. Would it make us, or break us? We soon found out. We bundled into the car, change of clothes all prepared – ready for “the world’s best mud run” – to the beautiful countryside of Badminton, on the outskirts of Bath. For those uninitiated in the art of Tough Mudder, it challenges you to do things that you didn’t think were possible. A 10 mile outdoor obstacle course, with underwater tunnels, walls to scale, pools of ice water, monkey bars and barbed wire. This was my first Tough Mudder, and it was an amazing experience. I felt completely supported by my team of thirteen friends, and I did things that day that I never thought I would be
able to achieve. Even complete strangers helped me overcome obstacles that I could not have tackled on my own. They invested in me and I invested in others. For an experience that builds teamwork and trust, puts the emphasis on helping others, not on beating a personal best (it took us 4.5 hours to complete), and removes all inhibitions, there is nothing that comes close to a Tough Mudder challenge. Do you want to test your comfort zone? Book on for 2019, and I’ll see you there!
DETAILS Both Penarth View Editors have committed to taking part in five fitness events in 2018. Cardiff Bay 10k, Newport 10k, Barry Island 10k, South West Tough Mudder and Cardiff 10k. MAKING GOALS AND SMASHING THEM
1
21 Motivation was born out of an idea to empower people to motivate themselves through exercise. Specialising in working with people from all walks of life, Ryan’s approach to personal training comes from each individual client. Not only does this work, it actually makes you feel motivated to do more than just exercise! Whilst we couldn’t recommend Ryan more, we spoke to Fiona who told us a little bit about her own 121 journey.
Hi Fiona! How are you? Great thanks, I’ve just done my six month review, completed my overall fitness test and smashed out a two minute plank!
Well done! So how did your journey begin with Ryan?
/ OPEN SESSIONS Check out 121 Motivation on social media for news and updates on available HIIT sessions in Penarth.
To be honest, I’m not the kind of person who would have a personal trainer, but Ryan’s different. He starts by finding out what makes you tick and uses that to motivate you. For me, I started training with Ryan back in February and I wanted to change my weight, low self-esteem and feelings of being trapped. Now, I’m 30kg lighter and feeling awesome!
In three words how do you feel after Ryan’s sessions? Happy, energetic and content.
Nice work in such a short space of time! How would you describe how you feel now compared to six months ago? Back then I felt much bigger, lazy and just gross. That’s all different now. I feel awesome! [Fiona beams] I’ve thrown out all my larger clothes and I’ve got my new skinny leggings. It also feels great to actually feel my muscles!
Why did you choose Ryan? After our initial consultation with me to find out what I wanted, and what my goals were, I felt completely at ease with personal training. He also organises Sunday motivation hours which are great. At first, I didn’t want to go but when I realised that there’s people there of all different abilities and how everyone helps each other, it just felt great to exercise.
So what are your next set of goals? When I started, I set myself safe goals which Ryan saw straight through and he pushed me to aim for something more challenging. My next goal is completing the Cardiff Half Marathon and working towards the New York marathon next year.
DETAILS To continue reading Fiona’s interview or watch it online, head to www.bit.ly/pv32fitness. Huge congratulations to Fiona who has smashed her fitness goals and looks incredible! We all hope that our experiences with Ryan can help you achieve your goals, too! Contact Ryan on 07399 021 124 or email ryan@121motivation.co.uk 80
