AN EYE FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Getting the reading prescription right

10

This school building was our clinic for the day

www.penarthview.co.uk

T

Words by Hilary Bugler

hose of us with a cataract would all be jumping at an offer of an operation for £40 if it were in the UK. It’s actually the remarkable cost to the Vale for Africa charity to conduct this operation in Tororo District of Eastern Uganda. Each year a small team of six optometrists travels for a week from Cardiff to Tororo (via Entebbe and Kampala) and tests the eyes of 40 people on average a day. The people we see are rural poor, and many are subsistence farmers without easy access to any health care, or indeed the means to pay for an eye test (three hefty cheers for the NHS). As well as operations, which are performed in the excellent local Benedictine Eye Hospital (BEH), we also pay for the supply of spectacles. This offers reading glasses for close work (sewing, mechanics, blacksmithing etc.) and prescription ones for those with short or long sight. Everyone gets their eye health examined too, and cases of glaucoma, diabetes and trachoma are referred for treatment. The project is very simple and makes an astonishing difference to the approx. 1,000 people seen and tested each year. As you’d probably guess, it involves a lot of preparation! The optometrists all travel at their own expense, thus keeping our limited funds available for the people who need it. We work closely with the BEH, the Tororo local health board, and our sister charity Advancement for Community Empowerment in Tororo (ACET). This means we have local eyehealth professionals, local interpreters, and facilitators as well as local auditors.

PenarthView #LovePenarth

The long-term plan is to help Ugandans supply this service themselves. We’re pleased to say that this is already the case, in part, with all the local support of our clinics. Every year, our team supply eye-health training and have created milestones to help sustain this into the future by supporting local University courses for Optometry. The course, which has been running three years now, has celebrated their first six graduates last August (2018). That’s six brand new opticians for a country with a population of nearly 40 million! We’re pleased to see the building blocks of a new profession in Uganda, being trained in Uganda, but plainly there aren’t enough of them just yet.

Hopefully you have found this article interesting and for more information about the charity and our other projects in Tororo, please look up our website www.valeforeafrica.org.uk where you can find a donations link and information on how to get involved.

THE BIG D The topic of mental health and wellbeing has been gaining traction over recent years. What once was a taboo subject to society, has now turned its view on not only mental health, but a range of conditions that can affect us all as human beings. Words by Will Summers, Penarth View Co-editor

T

his mainly has a lot to do with people talking about their experiences, and organisations telling us about the support they offer, both coupled with the realisation that no one person is the same. More than ever, we have begun to recognise when a family member, friend or ourselves are affected by mental health or any other illness, which results in us becoming more educated, and able to exercise empathy. This is the exciting part because, with knowledge and empathy, we can begin to make a change. Change within ourselves, and for those around us, through talking about it and, in some cases, raising money for charities or support groups. For myself, anxiety and depression have been part of my story since my brother passed away. He was abroad on a college trip, away from his family, and it took us years to begin piecing together what happened. Unable to process what occurred, and unable to grieve, I put my energy into new projects, such as a house renovation and juggling three jobs. Needless to say, it all eventually caught up with me. 14

Now, eight years on, I’m finally starting to feel like Will again. That’s just a brief snapshot of my story, and I know that it’s just one of many narratives of someone juggling an overwhelming sense of depression in their day to day lives. Not one to sit down and do nothing, I’ve written a few brief blog posts on my own personal experiences. The idea here is not to tell people how to feel or how to get better, but to voice that not everything is always seen through rose-tinted glasses. The Big D is essentially a candid timeline of when I first admitted to myself that my mental health needed attention. Writing this gave me a vehicle to show those around me what was going on and also show my passion for talking about mental health. Right now, I’m happy to say that the fog is much clearer and easier to navigate—through what I’ve learned and talked about. Yes, I have those days where absolutely nothing goes to plan—but don’t we all?

Whilst there are many opinions, tools and self-help books out there, finding a tailored personal manual on how to deal with bereavement, stress, anxiety, self-confidence, work/life balance, house renovation, families, relationships, health etc. doesn’t exist. That is, until you begin to make your own manual, your own positive thought processes and your own coping mechanisms. In my case, I had to try a lot of different tools, techniques, books, counselling sessions (and six counsellors!) to find what works for me. I had to get to a place where I had no other option than to take the first step, fall back down and get back up again—but I’m getting there! If you or someone you know relates to this short piece, a belief that this isn’t it and a willingness to try something new to help yourself is your first step to moving forward. I’ve shared some of the tools, resources, and organisations that I’ve used throughout tackling depression on our website. Visit

www.penarthview.co.uk/stay-strong for more information, where you can also find a link to The Big D blog.

I am the owner of the oh-so-chic Studio Muse in Pontcanna, a feel-good shop dedicated to conscious self-care. Having a career history in beauty and aesthetics spanning almost fifteen years, I am now passionate about sustainability in the beauty industry.

Achieving balance Photo by Bekir Dönmez

T

he concept of self-care became huge in 2018 and, for once, it’s a trend I am very happy to back. I’m not one for trends. I back originality, ingenuity and integrity, but when ‘life’ happens and shakes up your world, sometimes you have to start back at the beginning. What’s great is learning that self-care starts with taking care of you, and then the rest will fall in to place. Most people juggle a never-ending list and often there isn’t much room to think about ourselves. But once you do start to explore self-care, a beautiful thing happens—the Law of Attraction. In 2018, I made wonderful friends from a brutal starting place of I am not OK. I made changes, starting with slowing down; embracing concepts such as mindfulness, energy-work, and a more hygge way of living. Once I tapped into and embraced new ways of being, I soon became open-minded and was inspired to make changes in other parts of my life.

Much like self-care, thinking about sustainability and the environmental impacts the beauty industry has, is now very much at the forefront of my thinking. With 15 years experience in professional make-up artistry, aesthetics and the beauty salon industry, I have learned so much. Whilst people will always be the biggest education, over the years I’ve clued-up on products and brands, their manufacturing processes and ingredients used. It isn’t all pretty! Even the very basic, and widelyused ingredients can be harmful to ourselves and our environment. It’s not just the packaging which we need to consider—it’s the formulations too. Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and absorbs so much of what we put on it! I felt embarrassed learning the harsh environmental impact even normal, widely-used products which are being washed down the plughole are having right now. It can sometimes be daunting when faced with phrases like singleuse plastic, clean beauty and low carbon footprint. It’s surprisingly easy, however, to adopt simple changes: apps like Think Dirty can bring clarity on ingredients used in well-known products. For packaging and design, bamboo is huge right now because of its amazing qualities, and it’s now being used in almost every industry. Hop online to find out about more products which can help you make more sustainable beauty choices.

With spring upon us, is it time for a new beginning? It is no secret that spring is traditionally one of the busiest times in the property market. With the welcoming warm weather, blossoming gardens and lighter evenings, the market is abuzz with buyers excitedly looking for their next home. The twelve month period from December 2017 to December 2018 saw a 6% price rise in the ever-desirable Vale of Glamorgan. This coupled with the Welsh market recording record house price levels in the same period has many owners thinking now is the perfect time to put their property on the market. It is no surprise that Penarth was voted as being one of the top ten places to live in the UK, with its idyllic seaside location, tree-lined streets and close proximity to Cardiff’s vibrant city centre, many buyers see it as an extremely desirable proposition. With over 160 years behind us, our ethos is built on traditional values with a modern, pro-active approach. We would warmly welcome the opportunity to provide you with a free market appraisal. By matching buyers with your property, we achieve successful results for our clients.

18 wattsandmorgan

Here are some helpful tips for those of you thinking about selling or renting this spring. First impressions count Buyers will judge your home before they even walk through the front door so a property’s curb appeal is vital. Ensuring the grass is cut, flowerbeds are blooming and your driveway is clear helps to start a viewing off on the right foot with the viewers feeling impressed and excited to see more.

A spring clean When it comes to selling your home, it really is the little things that count. De-cluttering and de-personalising your home will make it feel airy and spacious, helping a buyer to visualise themselves living there.

Don’t forget the little jobs Chances are buyers will be looking at a number of properties and weighing everything up, so completing minor repairs that have taken a back seat over the winter months, such as long overdue lightbulb changes, will help to ensure your property is in tip-top condition.

Wow their senses Spring is the perfect time to show off any natural light in your home, so be sure to open windows and keep blinds or curtains drawn so your visitors can see the full potential. Natural flowers, scented candles and diffusers will add a fresh spring scent to your home and help enrich the viewing experience.

THE POWER OF THE DARK SIDE White kitchens leaving you cold? Neutrals just too boring for words? Then if you are feeling brave, think about going over to the dark side with an almost black kitchen. This little beauty was painted in a black that has a deep blue tinge to it which stops it looking too flat.

T

he secret to choosing a dramatic, dark kitchen is to keep everything else in the room light, particularly the worktops. In this case a solid surfacing with a veined marble pattern—bang on trend. Mixed with a ceramic herringbone floor tile, in a greyed-out oak effect, and the soft gleam of brass handles picking up the retro light fittings, the overall effect is light and bright but still with the intensity of colour on the cabinet doors. Right from the off, this young Penarth couple knew they wanted something really dramatic. They considered, but rejected, deep navy in favour of the almost black Farrow and Ball Railings, and from this starting point everything else fell into place. By choosing the range cooker in a stainless steel finish it adds a touch of shine that highlights the door colour alongside. A crisp white, ceramic double Belfast sink was positioned under the window which was raised to allow the worktop to flood behind. This avoids the need for a separate windowsill and keeps the whole area behind the sink looking clean and neat. Alongside the orginal chimney breast, a shallow larder gives maximum storage whilst still allowing plenty of room for a breakfast table in front of the open fireplace. With an open shelving unit alongside, this makes use of the often dead corner in a room and adds visual interest—and somewhere to store a collection of designer gins!

The end result is a beautifully designed and expertly fitted kitchen with just the right amount of quirk that compliments our home perfectly.

I’m Miffy, and I’m completely obsessed with interiors! I live in Penarth with my builder-husband Gareth, our two-year-old daughter Frankie, and Tugboat, our awesome French Bulldog! I studied interior design at college and have been renovating properties with Gareth for the last fifteen years. I love modern, yet rustic, interiors and plants, and I love getting stuck into DIY.

I

t’s been a fun 12 months in the Shaw household. My husband Gareth and I have been working hard to finish our home in the gardens area of Penarth, ready for some exciting filming as part of BBC1’s interiors show: Best House In Town. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the results! Being asked to feature our home to compete in the show was a dream come true. It was exciting to meet other interior creatives, and I’m hoping more collaborations and projects can develop from the series. Although the whole process was really daunting, I really enjoyed being part of the buzz, and sharing the stories and intricate details of our home. The film and production crew were ace, and when the judges called up, asking us about the house, I was fit to burst. I don’t want to give too much away as the show is coming out in February, but I wanted to share some snippets with readers of Penarth View. Keep an eye out for me walking through the front door in an action shot!

During filming, I wanted to show how my home brings me joy both inside and out. I think every home should be a place of solace, and comfort, and be a reflection of our personality. That should extend into the garden as well! And, if you’re lucky like us, you can also incorporate some of the history that you’ve inherited. One of the stories that I told the judges about our home was its history. Spring is always welcome in our house, and it’s the perfect excuse to get back outside. The previous owner of our house, Alfie, had lived here all his life and loved his apple tree in the garden. After finding this out, we scattered his ashes, which had been left in the house, underneath the tree, thereby making it a focal point in the garden. I wanted our garden to be an extension of indoor living and there are so many creative ways you can use your outdoor space. Practicality plays a lot into our space, with our daughter, Frankie, and our dog, Tugboat, to bear in mind. Although I wanted real grass we opted for artificial, which is easier to maintan, yet looks just as great! Not one for giving up though on real grass, we installed a green roof above the new extension. It’s so nice seeing pockets of wild flowers and greenery through the existing windows and the new roof window. If you’re thinking about starting a new project outside, Pinterest is a good place to start for inspiration, and the best time to start planning your outdoor space is now, so it’s ready for the summer! Angharad Evans Penarth-based Nutritional Therapist

Being diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder led me to discover the Hilary Newman Clinic, where I embraced the power of natural remedies. Within months, I no longer needed medication to manage my illness. I was inspired by this treatment and re-trained as an Allergy and Nutritional Therapist. I now have a clinic in the heart of Penarth where I oer bespoke treatment to patients for a variety of illnesses.

We are inundated with a barrage of healthy diets, but what exactly do they entail? And are they right for you? VEGAN

PALEO

In a nut-shell, this approach features no animal-based products, so no meat, dairy or even honey. Despite the absence of these traditional foods, a vegan diet can ensure that you feed your body with a healthy amount of vitamins and minerals. Be sure your diet includes: fruit and vegetables; high fibre, starchy foods; omega 3; and calcium from green leafy vegetables, beans and soya milk.

For this diet, you would need to only eat natural unprocessed food, so no gluten, grains, dairy and refined sugars. Whilst this may seem harsh or even difficult, reducing our intake of processed food offers a variety of benefits, by cutting the amount of salt, preservatives and sugar we consume.

30

www.penarthview.co.uk

ACID/ALKALINE DIET This diet is based on the premise that all food contains both acid- and alkalineforming elements after digestion. For some foods like eggs, chicken and cheese, this results in the production of more acid, whereas higher amounts of alkaline are produced with foods such as fruit, vegetables and nuts. In order for us to maintain a healthy body and mind, we should consume more alkaline rather than acid producing foods. The suggested ratio is 80 (alkaline) to a 20 (acid) diet.

Many diets follow similar themes, introducing healthier options to our diet. If you are wanting to make a change, don’t feel like you need to introduce radical changes overnight. Make small changes to your diet at regular intervals. Before long, you will find the diet which works for you and your body.

FOOD COMBINATION If you experience digestive issues, or are looking to improve your diet, it’s good to consider the combination of foods which you eat. It is known that protein and carbohydrates are digested differently in the body. However, different combinations of foods can be more beneficial than others. For example, while it’s good to avoid combining protein and carbohydrates with one another, a good option for both is to combine them with non-starchy vegetables. Fruit, however, should be eaten separately and on an empty stomach.

I am a fully qualified therapist based in the heart of Penarth where I offer treatment in a professional, friendly and private environment. Pembrokeshire new potatoes and radish salad SERVES 4–6

INGREDIENTS 2 big handfuls of Pembrokeshire New Potatoes (about ten-fifteen) 1 mug of radishes, topped, tailed and quartered 1 mug of pitted black olives 2 tbsp capers, 1 block of finely chopped feta cheese 2 glugs of olive oil 1 glug of balsamic vinegar A handful of fresh basil

METHOD / 1

/ 2

/ 3

There is no need to peel potatoes as the skin is thin and tasty — just give them a quick wash. Boil the potatoes in a big pot of water for about 20 minutes or until tender. When the potatoes are ready, drain and set aside to cool. Whilst the potatoes are boiling, carry on with the remaining salad ingredients, adding them to a large bowl. When the potatoes are cool enough to handle, cut them into chunks and add them to the bowl. Toss through together with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar and top with the fresh basil.

Welsh rarebit burger by Sian Fox, Foxy’s Deli

SERVES 4

BURGER 700g mature cheddar, grated 700g lean minced beaf 2 eggs and 2 egg yolks 1 large white onion 150ml milk 25g plain flour 50g breadcrumbs 1tbsp English mustard powder Dash of Worcestershire sauce A few drops of Tabasco sauce / 1 Put the cheese in a pan with the milk. Slowly melt the cheese, but do not allow the milk to boil or the cheese will separate. When smooth, add the flour, breadcrumbs and mustard. Cook over a low heat, stirring continuously, until the mixture forms a ball which comes off the sides of the pan. Add the Worcestershire sauce and the Tabasco sauce if using, season with salt and pepper and then leave to cool. / 2 When cool, put the mixture in a food processor and beat it, slowly adding the eggs and yolks. If you don’t have a food processor you can do this by hand with a wooden spoon. Finely dice the onion, add it to the minced beef in a separate bowl and season well. Using a food processor or your hands, combine the beef mixture with 200g of the rarebit mixture. Form the burger mix into four patties. The remaining rarebit mixture can be frozen for later use if you’re only making four burgers. Pan fry or oven bake the patties until cooked through when all the other elements are ready.

CLASSICAL CELEBRATIONS

The Vale of Glamorgan Festival celebrates its 50th Anniversary with a full programme of exciting events, bringing the best new classical music to venues across South Wales, featuring works by over 20 living composers to include Dobrinka Tabakova, Graham Fitkin, Ben Wallace, Robert Fokkens, Peteris Vask, and Steve Reich, as well as by the Festival’s own artistic director, composer John Metcalf.

34

www.penarthview.co.uk

At lunchtime on 19 May there will be a great free family event on Penarth Pier to enjoy, where you can come along (hopefully in the sunshine with an ice cream!) and listen to Astrid the Dutch Street Organ, with operator Frances Stapleton, as they present ten newly-commissioned short works written especially for Astrid by ten composers (eight of them from Wales). This exciting project will create a platform to celebrate established multi award-winning composers, alongside inspiring younger talents, with each composer being selected for their shared ability to voice something truly unique through their music. The ten composers commissioned by the Vale of Glamorgan Festival are Charlie Barber, Mark David Boden, Graham Fitkin, Gareth Glyn, Lynne Plowman, Steph Power, Guto Pryden Puw, Claire Victoria Roberts, David Roche and Ben Wallace. If you miss the performance at Penarth Pier you can catch it later in the day at Barry Island’s Eastern Shelter, or on 21 May at St. David’s Hall, where Astrid is joined by the exciting New York percussion quartet, Sandbox Percussion. Just down the road at the Wales Millennium Centre on 18 May—in a concert not to be missed—BBC National Orchestra of Wales will feature one of the world’s first performances of Steve Reich’s new composition Music for Ensemble and Orchestra, along with the world premiere of John Metcalf’s new arrangement of Polly Garter Aria for soprano and orchestra from Under Milk Wood.

PenarthView #LovePenarth

Penarth resident Robert Fokkens’ 2019 festival commission will receive its world premiere at the stunningly atmospheric Ewenny Priory on 22 May. Later in the Festival, the Berlinbased multi-award winning Armida String Quartet will be making their Welsh debut at the Penarth Pier Pavillion on 23 May. This remarkable concert features the music of Peteris Vasks and Arvo Pärt alongside Steve Reich’s Different Trains, making the haunting comparison of the trains of his childhood and those used in the Holocaust. With lots of exciting music completing the 2019 programme, running from 18–24 May, visit the Vale of Glamorgan Festival website on www.valeofglamorganfestival.org.uk for full events details and ticket information. CARNIVAL DECLARED IN PENARTH Like most great ideas, the idea of Penarth’s Winter Carnival came over a pint of ale on a cold evening in a warm pub. That spark of a plan led to the declaration of Carnival on the first weekend in March, and what followed was a flurry of enthusiasm from the town’s people and businesses. From pancakes on the pier, and a quirky take on a half marathon, to the crowning of the town’s First Fool, the town quite literally turned upside down, reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. We speak to Richard Parry, the carnival’s Encourager, about bringing a festival feel to Penarth.

PENARTH VIEW CREATIVE SECTION SPONSORED BY ROWLEY’S THE JEWELLER

You have a very creative background. Could you tell us a little more about it? I’ve always seen design and aesthetics as being able to answer many problems facing society, the bridge between them even, and much of my work is a response to that. I was involved in producing Carnifal y Môr in 2018, the opening carnival celebration for the National Eisteddfod in Cardiff Bay. Thousands of people loved it, and since then many people have been talking about carnival in Wales, so over a pint, we thought we’d bring carnival to Penarth.

What made Penarth’s Winter Carnival so unique?

OF PENARTH For 55 years, Rowley’s have been selecting only the best jewellery, watches and gifts to grace the shelves of the store. The family currently behind Rowley’s the Jewellers are no strangers to the arts scene, and are proud to sponsor Penarth View’s Creative Penarth section.

/ rowleys.clogau.co.uk / 029 2070 7556

What of the rest of the Carnival?

The carnival was developed from the ground up, with businesses, groups and individuals coming forward to give time and skills to make a festival atmosphere in the days before Shrove Tuesday. We saw the crowning of the First Fool on the Saturday, who presided over the festivities, and long distance cyclist Dave Hann cycled to North Wales to tell the town of Harlech that our four days of party had commenced. This part of the story was inspired by Bendigeidfran’s story from the Mabinogion. Vale of Glamorgan brewery Tomos & Ilford also brewed a special carnival ale for the town, Cwrw Carnifal, which was available in many of the town’s bars and pubs.

And we’re sure music and dance featured heavily in the festivities?

Rowley’s the Jewellers was used as Carnival HQ, after Cem and Petra offered the team the space to develop the carnival, something Petra was incredibly honoured to do, and it was from there we encouraged the town. The four-day festival closed with a Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) party at the Ex-Servicemen’s Club, which featured Wonderbrass and Suburban Disco, and a Pancake Party at Penarth Pier Pavilion, supported by Snowcat Cinema, who showed The Princess and the Frog, and Penarth’s children’s choir Victoria Voices, led by Clare Gardner.

PENARTH’S WINTER CARNIVAL WAS A GREAT HIT, AND WE CANNOT WAIT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!

With the town’s own Male Voice Choir having finished a few years ago, we revived the tradition and formed our own Penarth Carnival Choir, to encourage men, Andy from young and old, to experience Hampton’s what it’s like to sing. created these

Claire Jacklin

Penarth-based Personal Stylist

I have been a resident of Penarth for 11 years. Having moved here from London to settle and have a family, I brought a wealth of fashion styling knowledge to South Wales. I apply my personal styling skills to help transform my clients, not only to help them look better but also to feel better about themselves.

W

ellbeing comes in many forms and I believe that our appearance can help or hinder how we feel about ourselves. Many of my clients come to me when they are stuck in a rut and say that they feel low because of it. During a styling session we talk about the jigsaw pieces that will create your personal style. These are simple steps, which include being shown colours that will make your face glow, discovering a style personality that truly resonates with you, as well as understanding the correct cut and cloth, which works in harmony with your individual body shape. Simply put, we look at the three Cs: colour, cut and cloth. Once my client has regained some control of their style, I often get messages saying how much better they feel, which is lovely. Part of my job also steers me to listen to very personal histories from clients, so I decided to undergo some mental health training. What I noticed was how much of a taboo mental health still is, especially

40

for men. With this knowledge and to mark my fifth year in business, I have decided to design some mental health awareness t-shirts, with 20% of the profit being donated to two charities: Young Minds and the Noah’s Ark Children’s Charity Tiny Lives Appeal. Statement Mind tees by Claire Jacklin £20 Available at www.clairejacklin.co.uk/shop

www.penarthview.co.uk

“It’s so much more than clothes” As well as the t-shirt campaign, I’m linking up with Mum2Mum Penarth to host some Self-care Style workshops to support small groups of women, who may need some styling advice and self-care encouragement. We will hold a series of creative workshops, which will enable the participants to explore their self-care style journey, through creativity and discussion. You will come away with a personal notebook where you will have designed your own style-vision boards looking at the three C’s of style. They will be held on Sunday 7 April, 5 May, and 9 June at 4pm until 6:30pm. When we practise self-care and prioritise our own needs, we send a clear message to ourselves and others that we matter too. By default, this increases our self-compassion and self-confidence. Join the conversation about how you can personalise your self-care journey and how you can apply it to your every day life in a realistic way, so that you can be the best version of yourself. Your notebooks will be full of ideas and goals, all created by you! You can join one individual workshop or book onto the series for a discounted rate. Contact me for more information.

Disclaimer: As part of the cause related marketing agreement, for each item sold during the partnership, 20% of the profits will be donated to charity. 10% will be donated to the Noah’s Ark Charity, Tiny Lives Appeal, registered charity number 1069485. 10% will be donated to Young Minds, registered charity number 1016968.

pring is a wonderful time when we can see everything around us coming to life and have the pleasure of showing these things to our little ones for the first time. New discoveries such as buds, blossom, leaves and flowers are fascinating to little people. They are all around us, and are FREE! As the days get lighter and longer, warmer too, we can get out and about and enjoy new experiences and special time together.

Spring. Bring some spring into your home with potted plants. Watch them as they grow and their petals open wider. Children love plants that grow very quickly, such as cress or carrot tops. Picnic. Any food outside can be a picnic, and adds a novelty element. Take a teddy or a toy to join in too! Rain. Kids love rain—listening to the sound, watching from the window and ideally getting out in it for a splash! Collect rainwater, throw stones in puddles, and listen to and copy the raindrop sounds.

LITTLE FIZZ award-winning classes (ages 0-4) offer fun and learning through music, movement and play in Cardiff and Penarth every weekday. There is also a monthly Saturday class! Classes are lively, imaginative and interactive to engage each child. Little Fizz is independently run, with a relaxed, friendly and caring atmosphere. This September we celebrated twelve happy and successful years. PARTY FIZZ provides children’s party entertainment (ages 1-6). Our talented, energetic, enthusiastic and caring entertainers will make your child’s birthday special!

STEPPING UP TO ‘BIG’ SCHOOL

As thoughts turn to starting school next September, in either Reception, or Year 7, Dr. Griffiths shares his experience on the transition stages and pupil equality. “If you can make every pupil in every year group your priority, then you have been a successful school leader.” A great mentor of mine told me this over twenty-five years ago, and it has stayed with me throughout my career. I have always been keen on consistency in all my responsibilities and roles through the years— eager to avoid favouritism. Since becoming Principal, I 44

have had the opportunity to make this a foundation stone of the entire school – from Nursery to Sixth Form. Whilst many schools make their GCSE years the primary focus, I believe in every year group being our priority. In fact, more so than this, I feel that many schools are missing a trick here. Literacy and numeracy are the main focal points throughout both the Prep and Senior Schools, and not dictated by a national curriculum, our pupils’ learning has no restrictions at any age. Consequently, so many of our students have advanced reading ages.

www.penarthview.co.uk

This approach has been further enhanced by the school emphasis on transition. Our view on transition is not restricted to the move between Year 6 and Year 7, although our pupils move, with their teachers, to the senior school site at the start of Year 6. The transition policy that we follow goes much, much deeper. Parents and pupils are introduced to future teachers much earlier and more regularly than you would think, and this line of communication is set up very early on in the year. On-coming work for the following September is shared in curriculum maps; and parents are encouraged to be as involved as they want. The result? Well, a start in September that is as smooth as possible, in every year group. This isn’t restricted to current pupils. In fact, just as much energy and preparation goes into those who are starting from outside the school community. Teachers, form tutors and fellow pupils will begin contacting prospective students months before the start of term to find out more about each other and ensure they feel as comfortable as possible when they arrive. We also appreciate the stress a new school has on parents. So, we ensure they play an integral part in this process too. And when pupils start the new year? They are all treated the same. The books are inspected and marked to the same high standard in every year and as often; their learning as rapid in Year 7 as it is in Year 11; challenge and support as evident in Year 8 as Year 10. Why should pupils wait for priority in schools when they should have it not even as soon as they step across the door for the first time, but as soon as they apply. Why waste any time?

Dave Deane

Penarth-based Veterinary Surgeon

Having lived and worked in South Wales for 11 years, initially in Rhondda Cynon Taf and Cardiff, I have finally found my home in beautiful Penarth, where I also volunteer as a RNLI crew member. Growing up the son of a dentist may have influenced my passion for veterinary dentistry.

Winston, the Penarth View resident pooch Photo by Matt Popple

V

accination is only a small part of your pet’s annual health check. Your vet will also be doing a full clinical exam and checking that your pet is fit and healthy. One of the most common areas to discover problems is your pet’s mouth. Dental disease is the most common health problem seen in cats and dogs, with more than half of dogs aged over two years old having gum disease. Dental disease is caused by a buildup of tartar on your pet’s teeth which if ignored can lead to irreversible damage to the gums and jaw bone, potentially leading to loss of teeth. Lots of bacteria live on this tartar and the bacteria, in turn, can then enter the bloodstream and cause damage to internal organs.

46

Don’t panic though, dental disease can be prevented! As with humans, brushing daily is the key to preventing dental disease. Feeding specific dental diets and dental chews can help, but they are not a replacement for tooth brushing. Because pets are very good at hiding dental pain, it is important for us to keep a close eye on their mouth. Regularly checking your pet’s mouth for signs of dental disease, along with taking your pet to the vet for regular dental check-ups, plays an important role in caring for your pet. Signs of dental disease include: Red or bleeding gums Discoloured or loose teeth Smell from their mouth

PREVENTION IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN CURE! If your pet does develop dental disease there is lots that can be done. Scaling and polishing is the most common form of treatment but sometimes teeth need to be extracted also. Your vet can help advise you on the appropriate dental treatment needed for your pet.

TIPS ON BRUSHING PETS’ TEETH:

✓ ✓ ✓

✓ ✓ ✓

Introduce brushing slowly from a young age. Take it slow, and make it a positive experience by rewarding them each time. Start by just introducing the tooth brush into their mouth. You don’t have to use toothpaste, but if you do, don’t use human toothpaste as fluoride is harmful to dogs. Use an enzymatic toothpaste. This helps to break down the plaque on the teeth. Establish a daily routine. It will take time, be patient.

BE CAREFUL TO KEEP YOUR CHOCOLATE TO YOURSELF! Chocolate contains varying amounts of a substance called Theobromine, which can be toxic to both dogs and cats, and can cause heart disturbances with agitation, tremors and even convulsions seen. If your pet accidentally eats any chocolate please call your local veterinary surgery for advice. MOTHERS WHO INSPIRE

A focus on Esme Mason: mother, business owner, pioneer.

W

ith Mother’s Day just around the corner, we decided to investigate the strong and inspiring mothers of Penarth and the Vale; when faced with adversity they’ve risen to the challenge and thrived. We were very sad to hear about the passing of Esme Mason, doyenne of the Welsh removals industry, just before Christmas. In tribute to her inspiring life, we spoke to the team at the Masons Group to find out more about Esme. It all began with Eric Mason, an RAF veteran and a second-hand Luton Army Truck driver. Esme had been

54

working on the buses when she met Eric in the late 1950s and it wasn’t before long that they were married in 1959 in Cardiff! Esme joined Eric working for the family business almost by accident. She was asked by Eric to cover for his secretary in the office one afternoon and she never looked back. She continued to support Eric and the business whilst raising four children. When Eric sadly passed away in 1983, leaving Esme with their four children: Gordon, Brett, Sarah and Richard, as well as a business to run. Her eldest son, Gordon, remembers that they were faced with a choice: "we either had to shut up shop and walk away or take it on and make it happen". They made it happen and Masons Moving Group became Esme’s fifth child.

www.penarthview.co.uk

VISIT WWW.WOODYSLODGE.ORG FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS AMAZING CHARITY!

Even though it pained her to lose her husband after 25 years of marriage, she was so resilient. She discovered a wealth of strength and skills that had been hidden within her and she thrived, becoming the cornerstone of the Masons Moving Group. In the 1990s, whilst Esme, and by now her three sons, were at the height of the Welsh removals and storage industry, they saw other business opportunities arise in the Vale and opened the very first self storage facility which was later rebranded and expanded as Masons Self Storage, a 24/7 state of the art storage facility based just five miles from Penarth. Never standing still, just over ten years ago, Esme and her sons also saw a new trend emerge with the serviced office, meeting space and virtual office market, and in respone built the now highly successful Business Centre just next to the stunning Masons Self Storage centre. The Masons Group are as strong as ever with a fourth generation of Masons currently working their way up the ranks. Along with a strong sense of family, Masons are dedicated to getting involved with the local community, supporting wherever they can. From sponsoring local events like our Penarth Bakeoff in 2018 to the sponsorship of Barry Athletic Bowls Club.

In particular, one cause that is close to their hearts is Woody’s Lodge. An armed forces charity who provide support to veterans and leavers of the emergency services. Masons have been with Woody’s Lodge since their beginnings in 2017. Sarah, Esme’s daughter, who has recently also joined the Group, discussed the family pride at working with Woody’s Lodge as it commemorates the memory of their father Eric, who served as a pilot in RAF Bomber Command during WWII. The Masons Group have grown from a small family business into a business at the forefront of their industries; Esme was working in a largely maledominated field at a time when women were expected to be at home looking after the children. She retired 53 years later, leaving behind a local legacy.

As a Personal Fitness Trainer, with my company LiveFIT Wales Cymru, I work in the community, for the community, and with the community on their health and fitness. Life is short. Without moving our bodies and eating healthily, it’s shorter still. I’m also the health and fitness expert for S4C’s FFIT Cymru and QVC, the UK’s largest shopping and lifestyle network.

T

he dictionary defines wellbeing as the state of being comfortable, healthy, and happy. And that’s what we all hope for, isn’t it? For ourselves and our loved ones. But how do we achieve this? A life of comfort, health and happiness? If we don’t have this feeling of wellbeing, how do we go about getting it? Don’t get me wrong, there are many other nouns in the mix of our lives; adventure, excitement, for example, and maybe the most essential, love. But in searching for that overall feeling of wellbeing, what do we have to do? Most of us look to make changes to our health and lifestyle to make things generally better. At work, I meet people from all walks of life who are looking to better their fitness levels and their health to improve their wellbeing— there’s that word again. There’s a tendency to think that to have these things in their lives means a complete life overhaul, which can be totally

56

overwhelming, and stops them in their tracks before they’ve even started. How many of us have planned to start a diet or healthy eating plan, or go to our first exercise class, or clear out that spare room ready to work out at home on Monday? Monday approaches; as does a last minute work deadline, or a kid’s late homework, or some family drama that needs sorting, and by the time Monday comes, we’re not ready. Monday runs away with us and before we know it, it’s Tuesday. So, we’ll start next Monday then, won’t we? Next Monday approaches; as does a last minute dash around for a friend’s birthday present, whose party you totally forgot about; or the washing machine decides to go on the blink and there’s all that school uniform to sort; or that work deadline that took up so much of your time during the week; or that fullon weekly shop took up the time you’d set aside to prepare what you wanted to start on Monday. Aaand breathe! We’ve all been there. Hello, Overwhelm!

Baby steps. Small, manageable changes that, when done consistently, can deliver huge gains for your health and wellbeing. So where do you start? Pick one thing. What could you do? Do you have a daily full-fat latte or two from the local coffee shop? What about dropping that for a week, see how you go? Do you give in to the cakes someone brought in to work? What about saying No? Have you been scrolling through social media for twenty minutes? Could you have thrown on trainers and taken a brisk walk around the block a few times? Or completed a twenty minute home exercise programme? What about NOT pouring that glass of wine tonight?

Did you know that if you did all of the above in one day, you will have saved yourself approximately 1000 calories? And by taking that brisk walk or moving your body for twenty minutes, you will have raised your heart rate, pushed oxygen all around your body and set happy hormones flowing? One by one, these seemingly small changes can make a big difference. The fact is, by introducing some form of exercise into our lives, along with wiser food and drink choices, we can, over time, make significant steps in getting closer to that feeling of wellbeing. The path to comfort, health and happiness is just a Monday away. And all we have to do… is start.

TAKE TO THE OPEN ROAD

The team at Victoria Garage, Penarth, are gearing up for another year, with a new set of road trips just a few hours away, and perfect for spur-of-the-moment days out. There’s always an adventure to be had, and our picks this season shine a light on those attractions a little more mysterious. Enjoy! Words by Will Summers, Penarth View Co-editor

TAKE ME TO… STONEHENGE Just over two hours away by car, Stonehenge is one of the pre-historic wonders of our world. Lying in the Neotholic landscape, the impressive structure attracts 1.5 million visitors every year. The stones. on average reaching 13 feet high, are believed to have been set up between 2000-3000 BC. Transported from the Preseli Hills in Pembrokeshire, it’s the perfect answer to finding a bit of Welsh history combined with British engineering at its best. Pre-booking is recommended during peak times. There’s also a Stonehenge museum on the site that holds a 5,500-year-old man!

TAKE ME TO… HEDGE MAZE Nestled in the Wye Valley, the A-mazing Hedge Maze is a great way to entertain the family this spring. Planted in 1977, the maze is built around a romantic temple and contains over a kilometre of hedges. Tickets are £3.75 for adults and £2.75 for kids. The visitor centre also has mini golf and a butterfly zoo!

TAKE ME TO… WATERFALL COUNTRY As well as the peaks and views, the waterways in the Brecon Beacons are also a must-see. Running through Fforest Fawr is Waterfall Country, boasting four specular waterfalls. Known for its landscape of wooded gorges, caves, swallow holes and waterfalls, the trail leads to its most famous waterfall; Sgwd-yr-Eira (The Snow Waterfall). Worth the walk, you can follow a path behind the curtain of water—definitely an adventure to tick off the list this spring. We recommend a good pair of wellies! I have worked in travel all my life as an adventure tour leader and now as an independent Travel Counsellor. I provide friendly, professional travel advice and trusted tailor-made holidays. I live in Penarth with my son and I love running, yoga and travel (of course).

O

ccasionally, it’s time to hit the reset button. Health and wellbeing holidays are becoming increasingly popular as we look for ways to take a break from the frenetic pace of modern life and take a step back. If you’re looking to invest in a holiday that holistically remedies your mental and physical health, and inspires you to focus entirely on healing and recharging away from the regular demands of your life then a wellness break is for you. Geographical escapes are no longer enough. We want to escape in mind, as well as in body. Here, I look at three breaks which offer exactly that: Unique luxury wellness hotels located in spectacular settings in Iceland, India and The Caribbean.

Iceland 60

Iceland’s Retreat at Blue Lagoon promises to unwind the clock of modern life and unlock the door to a wonder of the world. The Retreat lives up to its name, offering a luxurious, ethereal escape from it all, surrounded by the bright blue healing lagoon waters and rugged moss-coloured lava landscapes. An other-worldly scene awaits. Included with each stay is The Ritual, a relaxing treatment which makes use of the Blue Lagoon’s natural health-giving properties through the application of mineral salt, silica and algae. Climb up to the top of the lava flow for far reaching views of the unearthly volcanic horizon. For those of you who want to get out and about into the mythical landscapes of Iceland, you can choose from guided hikes, quad bikes, and glacier walks, to kayaking, snorkelling and snowmobiling. All ages are welcome at the hotel but it is best suited to couples looking for a romantic retreat. Visit in the winter months and if you’re lucky the Northern Lights will also make an appearance, reflecting the ghostly green moss on land with magical swirling green illuminations in the sky.

The BodyHoliday Hotel on St Lucia has a bold claim: “Give us your body

for a week and we’ll give you back your mind”. Set on a secluded white-sand beach at the edge of the azure Caribbean Sea, surrounded by tropical gardens and rainforest, this is an all-inclusive wellness holiday with a difference. Don’t be concerned that you’ll be marched off to exercise at every opportunity, the reality is very different. Yes, there are an abundance of activities you can take part in but they are all entirely optional and you can do as little or as much as you want. Every guest at the hotel is pampered with an indulgent daily fiftyminute spa treatment, included in your stay. There’s an extensive vegetable plot on site which provides much of the fresh produce for the kitchens, reinforcing the resort’s approach to wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle. Guests here must be 16 years plus, except for July and August, when the minimum age is lowered to 12. This makes it a popular choice for families with teenage children who want a wealth of activities to keep the whole family happy.

ACCESS PENARTH A new campaign will launch in March 2019 aimed at making Penarth’s shops and services more accessible to disabled people. The scheme’s instigators, Gwyrddio Penarth Greening (GPG), teamed up with Penarth’s Mayor Cllr Jon Luxton, Shop Penarth and representatives of local disability organisations to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by many people when using local amenities. The scheme centres on a pledge which businesses and service providers will be invited to sign and display in their window.

MAKING PENARTH ACCESSIBLE TO ALL

This pledge confirms that

Business name

is committed to working with Access Penarth and our partner organisations to improve access to their facilities and services, for all disabled people. By making the pledge, we will: welcome and treat citizens with equal respect, when using our services; support disability awareness sessions and participate wherever possible; where possible, make adjustments to our premises to make them more accessible to disabled people; when required, make adjustments to how we provide our service with the aim of making it accessible to all; and display the ACCESS PENARTH badge and pledge. Our aim is to make every visitor experience for disabled people as enjoyable as everybody else’s.

GPG Chair Gideon Calder says:

“barriers come in many forms, from limited access to buildings, to staff being unsure how to respond to, say, someone with a learning difficulty or dementia. We’ve found much goodwill, but also workers who need support to help make their businesses as welcoming and accessible as possible.” Mayor Jon Luxton, says: “creating a more accessible Penarth will change lives, enabling more choices and participation and thus increasing people’s independence. It will also benefit those businesses who adapt, making themselves welcoming to new customers. I don’t see this simply as a Penarth project, because if we succeed, we can become an exemplar for others to follow. Now, that is truly exciting!” Penarth Youth Action will hold a survey of local shops to develop a fuller picture of the issues and to encourage sign-up to the pledge.

YN FALCH O FOD ADRE’

U

Geiriau gan Haf Weighton

n noson, pedair mlynedd yn ôl, yn ein cartref yng Ngogledd Llundain, fe ddechreuon ni drafod y syniad o ddychwelyd i Gymru. Chwe mis yn ddiweddarach roedden ni’n cychwyn ein bywyd newydd ym Mhenarth. Erbyn hyn mae ein plant yn mynychu’r ysgol Gymraeg yma ac mae fy ngwr yn Uwch Ysgrifennydd yn y Bathdy Brenhinol, Llantrisant. Mae bod oddi cartref am dros 20 mlynedd wedi dylanwadu arna i, ond yn rhyfedd iawn, ers i mi symud adref, mae fy ngyrfa celf wedi datblygu’n rhyfeddol. Blwyddyn diwethaf cefais y siawns i arddangos fy ngwaith celf yn un o orielau mwyaf adnabyddus y byd: Galeri Saatchi. Yn ogystal â Llundain, ‘dwi hefyd wedi byw yn Awstralia, Canada a Seland Newydd. Efallai, gan i mi deithio cymaint, y syniad o adre yw’r un sy’n fy ysbrydoli. O Ebrill 12fed ym Mhafiliwn Pier Penarth, fydd lansiad arddangosfa o fy ngwaith tecstiliau, ar y thema Adre. Mi fyddaf yn rhannu’r arddangosfa a’r thema gyda Carol Bartlett o Sew Lovely. Hefyd yn yr arddangosfa fe fydd gwaith gan blant ysgol lleol. Yn y parti agoriadol ar Ebrill 12fed am 7pm, fe fydd cyfansoddwr y sioe gerdd Tiger Bay ac awdur Llwyth\ Tribe, Dafydd James, yn siarad am ddylanwad ei gartre ar ei waith. Mi fydd

PROUD TO BE HOME Haf Weighton talks about how returning home after over 20 years has benefitted her as an artist. Her latest series of works, Adre\Home will be exhibited at Penarth Pier Pavilion from 12 April until 30 May 2019. The exhibition’s opening party takes place 12 April at 7pm with Analogue Music Club spinning records. All welcome. Snowcat Cinema will also be showing a special screening of Sleep Furiously, a wonderfully poetic look at a quiet Ceredigion community that’s somewhat out of time, and full of Hiraeth.

Pafiliwn Pier Penarth

Clwb Cerddoriaeth Analog Penarth (AMC) yn chwarae recordiau ar yr un thema, a’r Snowcat Cinema hefyd yn dangos Sleep Furiously—ffilm llawn hiraeth sy’n edrych ar gymuned dawel yng Ngheredigion sydd ychydig yn ddi-amser. Rwy’n annog pawb sydd â diddordeb i ddod i ddathlu gyda ni.
