CROESO—WELCOME SHWMAE What a year! We can’t believe how quickly the time has flown by since we started our new Penarth View venture and took over the editor reins! It’s lovely to take a step back and look at how much our new venture has shaped a lot of our own adventures, and how well the magazine has been received from our wonderful clients and readers. Thank you! We thought it was fitting that a year on, our theme should focus on Adventure, since taking on Penarth View has been a big adventure for us in itself. We’re also super excited to share our travel adventures with you, from Copenhagen-cool, to wild camping in beautiful West Wales. Jo Baldwin, our brilliant travel influencer, also gives us her take on Mauritius. Claire Jacklin explores being adventurous with style, and Amy Adams has carefully selected a range of the hottest (and most sustainable) products in the beauty industry right now, perfect for your summer get-away! We also welcome back vet Dave Deane, who shares some hot tips on keeping our fur-legged friends safe this summer. Rae Carpenter also talks us through using fitness to bust children’s boredom. Local Specsavers branches have once again helped us to bring you Penarth’s biggest What’s On guide, helping you to keep an eye on this summer’s events! For us, Penarth is definitely about its people, and we’ve always wanted our magazine to reflect that. In our next issue, we’d like to shout out from the rooftops about the wonderful people that live here.

Of course, that means we need you, our readers, to get in touch. Tell us about your stories and links to our beautiful town for a chance to be featured in our People issue this autumn! Keep your copy of Penarth View close to hand to find out what events are happening, and remember to use the wonderful businesses who advertise with us. Don’t forget to mention Penarth View too! Now, allow yourself to turn the world off and relax!

DOWNHILL DERBY It is a highlight of the Penarth Summer Festival calendar, where amateur drivers race homemade soapbox carts, powered by nothing except determination and gravity. This year’s competition, the 9th since starting in 2010, promises to be the best yet, with everyone rolling into summer at full speed.

W

e spoke to one of the event’s organisers, Elliot Penn, about this year’s event, which will take place as part of Penarth’s summer carnival on 13 and 14 July 2019. For those who are fearless, crave speed, and want to feel the wind in their hair, there’s nothing that beats Penarth’s Downhill Derby. The competition is open to all ages, with a hotly-contested under-12s category. Star players in this category attend Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School in Pontypridd. Pupils at the school are encouraged to take part and engage, whether they be a driver, pusher, mechanic, or cheerleader! The competition is international too, with past entrants from France and even Vietnam. The race is a staple in the UK’s soapbox racing calendar and attracts many entrants every year. Starting at the top of Cliff Hill, the course runs for just over 450 metres downhill towards Penarth Lifeboat Station and Penarth Yacht Club, but it’s really not that simple. Obstacles, ramps and tight chicanes are added to the course to add a challenge to the teams and some extra excitement for the crowd. It delivers a lot of fun for entrants and spectators alike, and there’s nothing better than a chilled pint at the end of the day to relax, rest the legs after running up Cliff Hill countless times, and bask in the thrill of soapbox racing.

MUSIC IN THE PARK 2019 BELLE VUE’S MUSIC IN THE PARK has been a staple in the calendar of Penarth summer events for over 10 years. This year, the Friends of Belle Vue Park group are taking us back to the roots of the festival, capturing Penarth’s vibrant community, and of course its great music! With each year boasting bigger and better line-ups, 2019 is no different. Here’s a little of what you can expect from this year’s event.

Entertainment With a mixture of local and wider talent, the programme is guaranteed to get people of all ages and musical persuasions dancing, smiling and enjoying the day. With Andrew, the festival's Musical Organiser, and the team working hard on organising a great line up this year.

Eats and beats

Volunteers The Friends of Belle Vue Park are always on the lookout for community-driven, friendly volunteers to join our lovely team. You may want to help backstage, show off your brilliant tea-making skills, or greet excited ticket holders coming through the gate. We want everyone, including our volunteers, to enjoy the day. If you’re interested in volunteering for a couple of hours please contact Friends of Belle Vue Park! 12

Taking the festival back to its roots this year means that food stalls will be replaced by good, old-fashioned picnics. Cue the cucumber sandwiches, hummus, salt and vinegar crisps, and Prosecco! We’re also talking to our wonderful local businesses to see if they will be able to offer picnic hampers—look out for more details on our Facebook page.

Roll up, roll up! Calling for sponsorship Community events like ours rely on support from local businesses to ensure a safe and successful day. It’s no secret that a lot of planning and preparation goes into staging, sound, facilities and safety all of which require funding. Luckily, we always manage to engage our amazing local businesses to help support us and in return we’re always happy to shout about the great services and businesses we have on our doorstep! Confirmed sponsors we already have this year are:

Due to the success of Music in the Park, the event has attracted larger audiences and means that health and safety procedures, along with adequate facilities are required. Tickets are available from local firm TicketSource for £5 (under 16s go free) and together with sponsorship, ticketing Music in the Park will ensure a successful and safe event. All proceeds will be used for the event and to help maintain Belle Vue Park for the community to enjoy it all year round.

I live in Penarth with my builder-husband Gareth, our three-year-old daughter Frankie, and Tugboat, our awesome French Bulldog! I studied interior design at college and have been renovating properties with Gareth for the last fifteen years.

T

he concept of home staging has gained traction over recent years as more homeowners, landlords and developers are looking for a quick and efficient sale. Added with the benefit of unlocking more equity, it’s not hard to see why more homeowners are using home staging. I met the exuberant Emily Davies, owner of Key Home Staging, to find out how she is leading the way and asked her for some tips on staging your home to impress.

What gave you the idea to start Key Home Staging?

Room staging by Key Home Staging Photography by Sian Owen

I’ve always had a passion for interior staging, and I wanted to help owners present their homes for the sales and rentals market in a way that achieves a quick and painless sale. Key Home Staging is for anyone in need of help, advice and home staging services, whether that’s a report that details steps to help improve the look and feel of a space, or a complete startto-finish staging service with no hassle.

What’s the first thing you do when you get a new client or project? Jump up and down! Getting a new client is always exciting. For me it’s important to get to know my clients, especially if they’re living in the home they’re trying

to sell. If the house is already on the market, feedback from estate agents is beneficial to see if there are any specific areas that need attention. We advise clients on anything from placement of furniture, maybe adding accessories from our hire stock such as mirrors and artwork to dress a room, to decluttering and depersonalising their property.

Do you have a top tip for people who are thinking of selling their home? Contact Key Home Staging *laughs*! Once you’ve made the decision to sell or rent your home, you need to see your property as an investment. Staging professionals like myself can also help point you in the right direction. It’s all about taking that first step and seeing the space with a fresh pair of eyes.

Describe your own personal style. My husband calls it 40-shades-ofgrey. I love natural elements in any home, so wood, plants and neutral colours with muted greys are the general themes I’ve adopted so far. I’m also not afraid to be more adventurous—we’ve just finished decorating my son’s room. We kept the old tongue and grove in his room, painting it a dark green and terracotta colours as a base for his jungle-themed room.

Who would you love to work with? You Miffy! After seeing you on

Best House In Town and on social media, I’d love the opportunity to work with you and stage a home. We also have a shared love for using wood!

PenarthView #LovePenarth

A quick heads up! Our new kitchen design studio is nearly finished, so you will soon be able to come and see for yourselves our beautiful kitchen furniture, made in our own workshops in Cardiff. Why choose an off-the-peg, uninspiring solution when you could have something totally individual and unique, handmade just for you?

What’s next for Key Home Staging? I’d really like to build a portfolio of clients who I can help, both in sales and rentals. I’m investing in stock items that I know really work in a space, as well as building and promoting my brand, Key Home Staging, which has really come to shape over the past six months. I’m also really excited to be working with some well-known estate agents in the area! You can check out the whole interview with Miffy and Emily on

HAMPTONS FOR INSPIRATION

S

et over two floors in a beautifully converted former Victorian market and meeting hall, Hamptons is a haven of unique, design-led home interiors and gifts. Now in its fourteenth year and one of the largest independents in the town, Hamptons has become an integral part of life in Penarth. Owners Andy Bradshaw and Peter Knowles are constantly sourcing new products, and each visit to Hamptons brings fresh ideas— both for the home and as gifts. Following the move of the café at Hamptons last year to The Boat House in Sully, Andy and Peter have undertaken an expansion of the store which means you’ll find an even greater selection of products to choose from. Sofas, armchairs, framed prints, table and floor lamps together with many home accessories are all beautifully displayed.

22

Andy also runs the Hamptons interior design practice from the store, and with the coastalthemed Shore on Penarth seafront and their new shop, West Hampton in Cowbridge, he and Peter are a busy pair! If you simply need a beautiful greetings card or something gorgeous as a gift, any of the team at Hamptons—Chris, Sian, Gemma, Julie or Lindsay—are always on hand with ideas and advice. And with the free Hamptons gift wrapping service, you can be sure that your gift looks simply spectacular.

Hamptons is part of the Shop Penarth Scheme and as a thank you for shopping locally they are currently giving customers with a Shop Penarth card a £5 shopping voucher when spending £30 or more. www.penarthview.co.uk

Having lived and worked in South Wales for 11 years, initially in Rhondda Cynon Taf and Cardi, I have finally found my home in beautiful Penarth, where I also volunteer as an RNLI crew member. Growing up as the son of a dentist may have influenced my passion for veterinary dentistry.

n warm environments, dogs regulate their body temperature by panting. Heatstroke happens where a dog is unable to do this efficiently which can be very serious and even life threatening. An otherwise very healthy dog can suffer fatal damage from heatstroke and, the scary thing is, it can only take a matter of minutes. It is well known that hot cars can reach dangerous levels in minutes, but we must also be equally mindful of dogs being left outside without any shade, or exercised in hot or humid conditions. Certain tarmacs and other floor surfaces can get very hot in the summer months, and we should be aware that it may be too hot for our dogs’ feet. As much as it may seem a shame, always consider leaving your dog in the comfort of a cool house on very hot summer days.

WARNING SIGNS OF HEATSTROKE Panting or rapid breathing, drooling, lethargy, drowsiness, being uncoordinated and eventually collapsing, vomiting or diarrhoea. If a dog is displaying any signs of heatstroke, they need to be moved to a cool shaded area and a vet should be contacted immediately. DO NOT delay in contacting your vet, but you can also follow these steps to cool your dog whilst awaiting veterinary attention. Move them to a cool area— preferably shaded. Ensure access to cool water. Apply cool (not cold) water to your dogs with towels. These can be applied to their back, neck and tummy/groin. The breeze of a fan can be useful. Continue to apply cool water to their coat until their breathing starts to settle. DO NOT USE ICE and do not cool so much that they begin to shiver.

Brachycephalic breeds (those with short noses) e.g. pugs, boxers and bulldog types, are also at risk because these breeds have inefficient panting mechanisms and may be more affected by environmental temperatures. Certain diseases or medications can also make individuals more at risk.

SEASON OF OUR SECRETIVE SNAKES The adder, or viper, is the only venomous snake in the UK. In approximately 50% of bites envenomation occurs. Cases of envenomation generally occur between February and October with the peak risk being between June and August. Inquisitive dogs may get bitten on their muzzle or limbs and this should always be treated as an emergency. If you suspect your dog has been bitten please seek veterinary advice.

WILLMORE’S: THE UNTOLD STORY Larry Willmore

Willmore’s 1938 is a business which completely embraces the building it inhabits. After exploring the history behind the Washington Cinema, opened in 1938 by brothers Lawrence (Jack) and Oliver Willmore, owners Matt and Charlotte had not only found their name, but also a family history they were keen to continue research into. Unsure whether the brothers had any remaining relatives, the only clue to any more relations was the name of a J. L. Willmore on Alexandra Park’s cenotaph.

A

nd that’s where it ended. Until two months ago when a regular customer revealed that it was Larry Willmore, Lawrence (Jack) Willmore’s son, named on the cenotaph, and that he had been a boyfriend of her mother, Patricia Godfrey, before and in the early years of World War Two. He had been a part of the Fleet Air Arm but

38

A 1942 photo, showing Larry Willmore, top-left, at Alexandria, serving in the Fleet Air Arm

died during combat. The customer also revealed that although her 96-year-old mother was unable to talk to Willmore’s due to dementia, her 102-year-old Aunt Pearl had known Larry, and would be willing to recall her memories of him. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, and Willmore’s 1938 sat down with Pearl to hear her stories of growing up in Penarth during WWII. She recalled her time in the Royal Observer Corps with Larry’s sister Dorothy (who married Godfrey Clark in early 1942), where she learnt to detect different German planes by sight. Whilst on duty she even confronted some surveyors with a gun whilst they were contemplating where to build a new housing estate in Penarth. Pearl’s stories underscored the anxiety felt by all who lived through the war, and especially so when she discusses the bombing on Victoria Square.

“We were in George Humphries Butcher, and we hadn’t had an air raid, but we heard a plane going very low. So George went out to see and then he suddenly came in, hiding his head. ‘They’re dropping bombs… down by the station’ he said. We lived at Victoria Square. The soldiers and police were already there, and they wouldn’t let me go in until I said my mother lived there, and then my mum was fine. She was in the doorway wondering what all the fuss was about.” Pearl also shed light on Larry Willmore’s character, and relationship with Pat. “[Larry] would come to

the house… he was quite a small person really, pretty smallish man… delicate looking, blondish.” Willmore’s 1938 know that Larry sent letters home to Pat, keeping contact with her throughout his time serving in the Fleet Air Arm, but like so many other young pilots, his life was cut short and he was killed in action in Libya. After their meeting with Pearl, Willmore’s 1938 are keen to continue research into the Willmore brothers’ family ancestry, with the hopes of finding some more relatives that may be living in the area. Pop in and have a chat to Matt and Charlotte about this story, if you have any knowledge that could help them in their search. They’d be keen to hear it. Maybe get yourself a coffee and a cake too whilst you’re at it?

AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH Influencer

Angharad Evans Penarth-based Nutritional Therapist

re out mo Check e websit on our w.co.uk hvie penart

Being diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder led me to discover the Hilary Newman Clinic, where I embraced the power of natural remedies. Within months, I no longer needed medication to manage my illness. I was inspired by this treatment and retrained as an Allergy and Nutritional Therapist. I now have a clinic in the heart of Penarth where I offer bespoke treatment to patients for a variety of illnesses.

W

hat makes alternative medicine different to what we know as Western medicine? Here I attempt to explain the difference with examples—and I stress the word ‘difference’, since not one approach is inferior nor superior to the other, especially when considering emergency and surgery procedures. When I fell ill, I was dependent on a raft of prescription medicine. However, after years of diligently taking this medication, I began to explore the alternatives available. The western approach to medicine is focused on compartmentalising the patient’s body and disease when identifying the issue, location and providing a prescription. However, this is where the difference lies between western and alternative medicine. Alternative medicine centres on the whole person: mind, body and spirit, and the balance that flows between each. This concept has its origins in the founder of Greek medicine, Hippocrates. He coined the term ‘physic’, whereby, for an individual to maintain health and prevent ill-health, they need a clear understanding of the whole person, by looking at a variety of factors including their diet, exercise, quality of sleep, the impact of their environment, their detoxification abilities, and an understanding that any disturbances to an organ would impact the whole body at some level.

40

www.penarthview.co.uk

Here are two extremely popular alternative approaches to western medicine:

AYURVEDA Ayurveda is a 5000-year-old way of life, and if you have travelled throughout India you will have seen numerous practitioners. Balance is key, according to Ayurveda practices. They believe that if there is imbalance and disharmony in any part of your life then it can cause imbalances in your micro-biome, your internal environment. Following this principle, Ayurveda looks to promote health, prevent ill-health and reverse disease through lifestyle, diet, yoga, breathing, meditation and herbs. It is a personalised and holistic approach to health.

CHINESE MEDICINE Chinese Medicine doesn’t separate the body and mind. It treats the person as a whole. It believes that illness is due to Yin and Yang being out of balance. Yin and Yang are polar opposites, yet are interdependent and transforming. If one is weak, the other is strong. They balance each other and transform into each other. For example, if you feel hotter in temperature, or over-active, then it is likely you have become more Yang and are not held in check by Yin. Balance needs to then be re-established: diet, herbal remedies, acupuncture, massage therapy, tai chi, Feng Shui, Qi Gong (breathing/movement exercises) are the options a practitioner can use.

PenarthView #LovePenarth

These are just two examples of alternative medicines. On my journey back to health I tried different approaches, until I found the one that suited me. Maybe it’s time for you to try a different approach, one that best suits your body as a whole.

I am a fully qualified therapist based in the heart of Penarth where I offer treatment in a professional, friendly and private environment. I offer a natural solution to various conditions to promote long term health, including IBS, CFS, PMT/menopause, anxiety, intolerances, diabetes, aches and pains, fibromyalgia, endometriosis, weight loss, migraines, and many more. LET’S GET RECEPTION-READY

Getting the right start to learning is so important for those stepping up to Reception this summer. We had the chance to find out how Westbourne School stands out from the crowd when it comes to creating an engaging, inspiring, and fun learning environment for students. A world of adventure eagerly awaits as soon as you take the first step through their door! 46

www.penarthview.co.uk

Thinking about starting Reception school this September? The impressive and diverse way staff devise learning topics at Westbourne is inspired by their students, and designed to be engaging and fun. Perhaps your child is inspired by painting, dinosaurs, kings and queens, the animal kingdom, or their favourite food and drink. One of our favourite examples of teaching was inspired by a student’s love of space. Here’s how staff at Westbourne helped the children to learn through play. Beginning their adventure by visiting Techniquest, Reception children explored the science behind space travel. Learning about the planets—their names and their order in the solar system—they were then ready to to build a giant rocket and make a space passport (surely we’ll need them by the time they’re grown up). Back in the classroom, they all worked together to plan their route, research maps, find out what can be discovered on each planet—and not forgetting the countdown! Counting backwards can be a challenge, but fear not, Mrs Edwards stepped in to help! BLAST OFF! Using Google Earth to discover our planet from space has everyone captivated and bursting with questions before the end of the adventure! Children return from school each day with their head filled full of excitement and adventure, having learned heaps of skills along the way. Although the job our children end up doing in life may well not have been invented yet, Westbourne’s job is to build confidence, develop imagination and give individual academic growth to be prepared for anything. Let the adventure begin!

PenarthView #LovePenarth

Achieving outstanding reviews from Estyn, Westbourne’s dedicated staff deliver key objectives focusing on building your child’s confidence, numeracy, and vocabulary skills. Many of their Reception children are reading by the end of the first term!

WELCOME TO THE WORLD, OLIVER Baby Oliver, the latest addition to the Masons family was born with a cleft lip. Here, we speak to his parents, James and Lucy on the experience, the successful operation and their drive to increase awareness of cleft lip and palate in the UK.

I

t was during Lucy's 20-week scan that they discovered Oliver had a cleft lip. It was certainly a shock, with mixed emotions. Doesn't everyone want the best possible start in life for their children? To be told that their baby would have a cleft lip, which could possibly affect his gum and palate as well, was a scary feeling. They didn’t know how it would affect Oliver: his looks, his feeding, the operations he’d have to endure—it was such a worrying time, and this was only at 20 weeks! There was also a 5% chance that he’d have further health issues once he was born, such as Down syndrome. A referral to a specialist team offered support, visits and reassurance, as well as a free 4D scan, which was invaluable in helping the family, especially Oliver's older brother Jesse, understand and make sense of the future.

48

When Oliver was born, it turned out his palate was not affected, and he just had a small notch in his upper gum and lip. This meant that Oliver could feed normally. Perhaps something very small, but it meant that both parents were able to form a strong bond with newly-born Oliver, without the need for a feeding tube. James and Lucy were also relieved to be told that Oliver did not have any other complications! The support offered to the family before and after birth had been invaluable. For example, hospital staff offered equipment to help with breast feeding and were always on hand to answer any questions. James and Lucy were also lucky enough to have met other families who were going through a similar experience. They were able to give advice based on their own first-hand experience.

www.penarthview.co.uk

www.clapa.com

The operation to repair a cleft lip is usually scheduled for between 3-6 months old. However by the time Oliver was 3 months old, as a family, there wasn't a desire to change Oliver—he was perfect the way he was! His little cheeky chappy smile, his facial features—it was strange to think that they would change. But of course, his surgery was scheduled for 21 February 2019, when Oliver would be 3 and a half months. Understandably, both parents were incredibly nervous, but the team at Swansea's Morriston Hospital were professional, comforting and supportive. Afterwards, surgeon Mr Drake visited Oliver and discussed the successful surgery. It was so successful, Oliver was unlikely to have any further complications and his speech shouldn't be affected at all. And eleven weeks on, Oliver has been an absolute dream. Naturally, he’s had a few ups and downs, but doesn't any new baby? He’s embraced the change and has soldiered on, as if he’d only scraped his leg. He’s moved onto soft foods already—banana porridge gets a high-five! The scar on his top lip will fade over time, until it'll be hardly visible. That's how amazing the surgery was! The experience has meant that the family is much closer, and Jesse adores being a big brother to Oliver— he is very protective over him.

1 in 700 babies have a chance of being born with a cleft lip or palate. And Oliver's family don't believe there is enough awareness of the condition, especially as a young family to have to receive that news. A recent Facebook campaign by Oliver's mum, Lucy, raised over £500 for the Cleft Lip and Palate Association, and Masons Self Storage, in conjunction with The Business Centre Ltd, recently joined forces with local businesses to take part in CLAPA's May 2019 fundraising week, organising a week of fun activity at The Business Centre and raising a further £562 for the charity. Amy Adams

Make-up artist, purveyor of feel-good

I am the owner of the oh-so-chic Studio Muse in Pontcanna, a feel-good shop dedicated to conscious self-care. Having a career history in beauty and aesthetics spanning almost fifteen years, I am now passionate about sustainability in the beauty industry.

J 1

une comes around pretty quick in any year and very soon, if not already, our thoughts turn to a holiday. Whatever your adventure this summer, one thing is for sure: we all need a quick, simple beauty regime when travelling, so here’s my guide for easy-chic beauty this summer. For many, after a long winter, legs can lack a certain glow, yet the salon spray tan can feel utterly terrifying! Enter a self-tan by Tanya Whitebits 1, hands-down the best I’ve ever used. Alcohol-free, vegan, and packed with lovely natural ingredients—it’s easy to use with no smell. Next, nails. I’m in love with Nailberry London 2. A vegan brand with beautiful, simple colours that wear brilliantly. I love their new Peonies Collection for summer 2019.

2 52

It probably won’t have escaped you, the rise in conscious buying. One of the heroes of the moment is the ‘bar’. Near enough every bathroom product can now be found in this solid, low-waste format. Not only are they brilliant for supporting eco-commitments made by us all; they’re also incredibly handy for travel. From body wash to shampoo, conditioner and even body lotion, the entire shower is neatly stored in one handy tin. No exploding tubes or mini bottles, no spillage and no mess! ^ Da by The Try bars such as Siampw Goodwash Company 3, Body Pebble by Tropic 4 and Lotion Bar by Myrtle & Soap 5. All smelling absolutely divine!

For the summer, no product is more important than a high-quality sunscreen. Tropic’s Sun Care Discovery Kit 7 uses expertly-blended natural ingredients that are kind to sensitive skin and our oceans too. For fabulous beach hair, try Maria Nila’s Salty Mist spray 7, a deliciously scented spray to give hair a carefree wave with gentle hold. Their Argan Oil 8 is also great for parched ends in need of taming! Whilst high temperatures or humidity can make holiday make-up a pain, it’s still nice to have natural skin with a glow! Using a moisturiser is great, because your skin can often feel parched by the extremes brought by hot sun and cool air con. Then use just a few quality makeup products—bronzer, concealer, and illuminating powder for a stunning pop of colour. It’s worth remembering that when your skin tans, your tones will change—and what looks good on you in winter may not sit well in summer. Tropic’s ultra-hydrating Lip Love Balm 9 completes a very low-maintenance, yet stunning make-up look for a balmy evening of delicious food and cocktails!

Offering award-winning facial aesthetic treatments that refresh the skin you’re in and maintain natural beauty without surgery, Refresh Skin Studio is the perfect way to rejuvenate and enhance your beauty. ✓ PDO facial ✓ Tear trough thread lifting (under eye ✓ Muscle relaxant dark circles treatment and hollows) ✓ Dermal fillers ✓ Skin laser (Juvéderm and rejuvenation Restylane) (Regenlite and Fusion SLR)

I’m a huge advocate for eco-luxe beauty, products that are ethically sound, but still give a luxury feel. All products recommended are cruelty-free, nasties free, vegan or organic, with low-waste and good recyclable credentials.

CHANNEL YOUR LIFE FORCE Increasingly our lives are becoming more stressful, so it is important to be more aware of our health and wellbeing. Exposure to stress causes a vicious circle which has an impact on our mind, body and soul. Reiki holds the answer.

Words by Heulwen Roberts

W

e owe it to ourselves to incorporate a self-care routine by doing something enjoyable which makes us happy in order to reduce stress levels. This has a positive effect both emotionally and physically. Reiki is a holistic form of energy healing which works alongside conventional medicine and originated in Japan in the late 19th century by Mikao Usui. It’s a healing art which works on the principles of channelling universal life force energy through the practitioner’s hands, to the areas needed in our bodies and to the subtle energy systems also known as chakras and the auras. The universal life force energy channelled,

works on the mind, body and soul and is a non-invasive, gentle, hands-on therapy. The recipient remains fully clothed and the Reiki practitioner places hands in a range of positions on or near different areas of the body channelling the energy through. It is safe and suitable for adults, children, babies and animals. Reiki can also be channelled and sent as a distant healing providing the individual permits to receiving Reiki energy. We’re all beings of energy and when our life force energy is low we begin to feel stressed, unbalanced, unhealthy or unwell. Reiki helps our bodies to switch off, relax, rebalance and heal by kick starting the immune system and natural healing processes. This reduces stress, pain, anxiety and depression, promoting sleep and deep relaxation. Reiki has many other benefits improving overall health and wellbeing. A Reiki practitioner channels the energy allowing us to switch off, recharge our batteries, and get energised and rebalanced in order to function to our maximum potential. Reiki treatments and holistic handmade blankets available locally. For more information please contact Heulwen by calling 07576 772 260 or go online to

hat does adventure look like to you? An exotic getaway? A swim-up bar? Sunshine? Time sightseeing local relics? Camping—glamping, even! Cosy fireside cwtches? Large glasses of wine? Warm heady evenings or heading out on a long coastal walk. Backpack on, and just see where the wind takes you? Let’s add kids into the mix! Woah there! An adventure? With kids? Kerching! Let’s grab that credit card shall we? With holidays and getaways costing a small kidney outside term time, many of us will baulk at the idea of adventuring further afield over the 6-weeks holiday, unless we’ve been lucky enough to squirrel the cost away over time. The reality of the six-week summer holiday means that, if we have great weather, we have plenty of choice in entertaining our little, medium and big ones! Sunshine equals beach trips, homemade picnics,

56

park outings, outdoor walks, visits to new areas and much more. Bad weather means cabin fever, unless we venture to the cinema, or a museum to drag them to see some lovely old artwork—we may enjoy it, but does your five-year old really want to understand Renoir’s brushstroke technique? Cue the “I want to go home” cry! I paint a worst-case scenario here, because you as a family can enjoy many summer adventures over the school holidays, ones that you and your kids will remember, and think back on in years to come. When we think of our well-being— our comfort, health and happiness—we think of times with people we care about, our energy in that moment, and how we felt. Time and attention invested with those we’re spending our time with over the 6 weeks, and not the amount of cash spent is what’s important. So, and you’re stuck for ideas on how to keep active and entertain yourself and those little people in your life, no matter the weather, here are my PurseString Stringent Top Adventure Tips.

www.penarthview.co.uk

NEWBORNS CAN TRAVEL TOO! Babies don’t explode if you put them on an aeroplane. They don’t melt if you take them out in the rain. And they don’t break if you hike them up a mountain. Those early months and years are a precious and demanding time, but you don’t have to stay at home to enjoy them. Southerndown is sensational for coastal views when the sun is beaming, and you’ll get great selfies with your little ones with the beautiful Welsh coast as a backdrop! Plus, your step count will be through the roof, and the exercise will release those endorphins— and let’s be frank, who doesn’t want those?

4

TODDLERS It’s a myth that being trapped in the house with the little toddlers for days on end is a healthy situation. Toddlers were made for stamping in puddles, for gathering up leaves in the woods, and for stuffing twigs into pockets. Cosmeston Country Park is a winner! Simple, free, and potentially hours of fun—if you’re willing! Rain coats and wellies at the ready, of course! The outdoors is a great big playground. You can explore the world together at no cost! Take healthy snacks and plenty of water. Adventure—go and see what’s out there.

TWEENS ‘N’ TEENS Everyone knows that this age group has its challenges—and hormones! So why not let them express these hormones in a beautiful environment? Road trip! Let them hate on you while the sun beats on to your back and a light wind fans your face. Let them Snapchat their friends from a forest, beach, park or new city instead of from their bedroom. Help them widen their horizons. Maybe this will give them the chance to say what’s on their mind without the distractions of everyday life and you’ll get the chance to cement your relationship. Benefits all round!

PenarthView #LovePenarth

5

YOU DON’T NEED TO SPEND MONEY ON STUFF, EVEN IF THE WEATHER’S BAD! A cardboard box is not a boring everyday item fit for recycling. Athome adventures can remind us that the plastic toys, the Xbox and the GHD hair straighteners are not what life is all about. Life is about people. Ditch the stuff and try playing for a change. Even the littlest member of the family can make a den out of two chairs and a bed sheet, and we’re constantly surprised by how many games kids of all ages, even grown-ups, can make out of a large cardboard box!

OLD-SCHOOL ROUNDERS IS AN ALL-ROUNDER. If we’re blessed with good weather, get to your nearest park, claim your pitch, and set up those rounders posts— just use jackets! Remember when you were in school at break-time, when you and your friends would use any old thing to set up the game? What’s in the shed for a makeshift bat and ball? An old tennis or badminton racket? A battered tennis ball? Fantastic! Grab them and your team, and go get flush-cheeked, an adrenalin rush and a barrel of laughs and memories as you go old-school.

NASH: THROUGH THE SEASONS

N

ational Museum Wales is delighted to announce a major exhibition of the work of sculptor and land artist David Nash, opening at National Museum Cardiff on 3 May 2019.

David Nash Sculpture through the Seasons will be the largest and most ambitious exhibition of Nash’s work ever presented in Wales. The exhibition will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the artist living and working in Capel Rhiw, a former Methodist chapel in Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales. Capel Rhiw has been at the centre of Nash’s life and work for over half a century, doubling as home and studio. Nash has developed the space into an extraordinary sculptural installation in which he gathers and arranges his ‘congregation’ or ‘family’ of sculptures. The exhibition will feature key sculptures from the late 1960s to the present day, exploring the different ways the artist has cut, carved and

60

manipulated wood to produce work that crosses abstraction and figuration, yet always retains reference to the forms of the original tree and the unique qualities of the chosen material. The centrality of trees and wood in Nash’s practice has led to his ‘growing sculptures’ – works that mark the passing of time within landscape and nature. This includes Ash Dome (1977-), where the planting and tending of 22 ash trees created a living sculptural space, and also Wooden Boulder (1978-), which marks the journey over many years of a carved boulder from stream-bed to open sea. These time-based works feature in the exhibition through documents including photographs, films and drawings. While much of Nash’s work has been made in or from the landscape and natural environment of Blaenau Ffestiniog, he has also travelled widely to work with trees and communities

across the world. These stories feed into the exhibition, and work made in overseas ‘wood quarries’ and retained for the Capel Rhiw collection also feature in the exhibition. David Nash has had many important solo exhibitions and international surveys of sculpture and his work is represented in major museum collections around the world. Recent major exhibitions at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2010-11) and Kew Gardens (2012) have underlined his international importance as a sculptor and land artist. David Nash Sculpture through the Seasons reflects on how this international reputation was formed in the particulars of place of Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales.

The exhibition will tour from National Museum Cardiff to Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne, in autumn 2019. It will be accompanied by a major publication David Nash: 200 Seasons with contributions from Dr James Fox, Dr Jo Melvin, and the exhibition curator, Nicholas Thornton. This exhibition is kindly supported by the Colwinston Charitable Trust and Henry Moore Foundation.

“I have lived with the seasons of the Ffestiniog valley for seven decades. Its environment and mountains have been my inspiration and companion. This exhibition is a celebration of the seasons, the weather, the trees, the making and the life.” —David Nash The exhibition runs until 1 September 2019 at National Museum Cardiff, Cathays Park CF10 3NP. The museum is open Tuesday to Sundays, 10am5pm. Entry to the exhibition is free.

Penarth-based Personal Stylist

I have been a resident of Penarth for 11 years. Having moved here from London to settle and have a family, I brought a wealth of fashion styling knowledge to South Wales. I apply my personal styling skills to help transform my clients, not only to help them look better but also to feel better about themselves.

L

et’s look at the most fun style personality out there—adventure, also known as dramatic, or eclectic. It’s a highly individualised style that can verge on the eccentric! We all have a dominant style preference, and often a second one too, and I often meet clients who have lost knowledge of their own individual style personality. Indeed, you may have many more preferences, but this is often when someone will give me a call as they have become confused, with chaotic wardrobes, and have lost their way on how they really prefer to dress. This is my favourite area of discussion, as I love to find someone’s style personality—and there are some sure-fire clues that give away the sense of an adventurous dresser! There will always be a love of print, bold colours and a statement piece— whether it’s an oversized accessory such as jewellery, sunglasses, a hat, or a bag. The draw to leopard print is usually a major tell-tale sign too, as well as red lipstick or red nail polish!

I absolutely love the Great British Bake Off judge, Prue Leith, for her individualised style and use of colour, pattern and unusual jewellery. Her style is a perfect example of attentiongrabbing glamour, with a hint of classic thrown in for good measure! Likewise, Paloma Faith is as individual, though with a less classic edge, and will wear any item to create the look she is after. She is more n eccentric and ‘anythinggoes’ type of dramatic-dresser! Next, we have the ‘high-maintenance’ adventurous types! Here, we are talking the likes of Victoria Beckham and, still to this day, Joan Collins. Both are avid followers of trends and fashion, and are less concerned with the eccentric. Immaculate grooming— hair and make-up—are definite parts of the consciously created look. You may know someone who will say “they

must be buried wearing their red lipstick”—this is a high maintenance

n ture

adventurous dresser! Striking cuts and asymmetric garments are sought after, and killer heels are adored. Oversized pattern or unusual lengths all add to the head-turning impact of the look, but without the eccentricity. Don’t be scared of embracing your adventurous side. Be as daring or as subtle as you like, but a touch of the dramatic may well put a spring in your step this summer. Much love, Claire

ark Twain is quoted as stating that “Mauritius was made first, and then heaven; and that heaven was copied after Mauritius.”

Never were truer words said. When you’re on this island the rest of the world suddenly seems irrelevant and quite unnecessary. Located in the vast Indian Ocean, this small volcanic island (28 miles by 40 miles) offers travellers the chance to experience their own version of tropical heaven. Be prepared to cry when it’s time to leave. There are some common misconceptions about Mauritius. Firstly, it’s not just all about the beaches, because it has so much more to offer as a destination. Yes, it can indeed be hard to drag yourself away from the palm-fringed pristine white sands, but when you do there’s a whole world of adventure waiting. Nature lovers can swim with dolphins in the wild, cycle through lush vegetation, whale watch, walk alongside giant tortoises and trek sumptuous jungle routes. Those with a thirst for adventure can zip-line, off-road on quad bikes, kayak, surf, dive into waterfalls and scuba dive the kaleidoscope of colourful coral reefs. Mention One Eye to a kitesurfer and their eyes will light up, as this break located just off the Le Morne peninsula on Mauritius’ south west coast is one of the best places in the world for this adrenaline sport. Secondly, although Mauritius is rightfully a renowned destination for honeymoons or romantic anniversary breaks, it’s not just for couples and is fast becoming more popular with families. Rooms on the island are massive, and tempting all-inclusive options with an emphasis on great food make this a very serious contender price-wise when compared against European summer holidays. As well as a host of both land and water sports, most hotels also offer kids clubs with loads of fun activities, as well as areas for teens, so the whole family is entertained.

You can fly to Mauritius indirectly from Cardiff and Birmingham. There is also a direct service from both Gatwick and Heathrow. Direct flights take 12 hours but the long journey is well worth it. You can always extend your holiday with a stopover in Dubai on the way back to make it a twin centre trip. Weather-wise Mauritius is a yearround destination due to its classic tropical climate. It does tend to be drier and cooler from June to September, and warmer with showers and higher humidity from November to April.

Where to stay LUX* Grand Gaube offers Instagram-worthy super chic décor and interiors as well as being situated on a stunning stretch of beach. The spa is sumptuous; there’s a fun kids club; the food is out of this world; they have a specialist coffee shop; and there are gin and rum bars to tempt you.

£££

Canonnier Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is set on a peninsula and is one of Mauritius’ best family hotels. The kids club here is unique, set under safari tents, and old cannons dot the beautifully maintained grounds.

Victoria for 2 is the exclusive adult-only section of the much-loved Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa. Unique in Mauritius, there are swim-up rooms so you can take a dip in the pool directly from the terrace of your room.

The simple and friendly Veranda Tamarin hotel has had a recent revamp and is looking great. It’s a laid-back hotel with an offbeat style and vintage décor. It also faces the mythical surf spot of Tamarin Bay where wild dolphins can be spotted daily.

Sakoa is a small, intimate boutique hotel situated on one of the best beaches of the island. It’s perfect for couples and has an authentic Mauritian feel to it. The town of Grand Baie is only 10 minutes away,v so if you like exploring and eating out, then the location’s ideal.

Maradiva Villas have a picture-perfect view of the Le Morne peninsula from the palm-tree-lined beach. Each villa has its own private plunge pool, so it’s ideal for couples who want total privacy and tranquility. Quirky touches like the Rolls Royces used for day trips around the island and a well-stocked gin bar mean that you’ll feel like royalty staying here.

THE EPITOME OF SCANDI COOL One of Scandinavia’s gems is Copenhagen, just a short 1 hour 40 minute flight from Bristol. With a recognisable European feel, the city boasts large open spaces, grand squares and beautiful 19th-century architecture, whilst still managing to create a cosy charm with canals, side streets, and quirky places to have your next adventure.

W

e explored the city by bike. It’s cheap and increasingly easy with the city’s many dedicated cycle routes making you feel safe and as if you’re one of the locals. The surprising lack of car traffic was a joy to see, and makes cycling a viable option. For those who want to be a little different, you can also choose a dedicated segway tour (although how people balance on those two-wheeled machines is beyond me!). We stayed for a long weekend, in a hotel close to Copenhagen Central Station, and left feeling we made the most of our stay, despite taking it easy. Be prepared to part with your cash here—many things are priced slightly higher than in the UK and you can easily get carried away with the DKK’s exchange rate. It’s a little confusing at times. Here’s some of our top picks to visit if you plan to head to Copenhagen:

The Little Mermaid

Tivoli Gardens

Tolboden, for brunch

The gardens have a rich history of entertainment since 1843. Now full of amusement rides, entertainers and a new adventure around every corner, Tivoli truly is a magical place with unrivalled surroundings. We recommend staying around for the light and firework shows on weekends. Also, be prepared to stay in the aquarium for longer than you think—it’s beautiful!

All-you-can-eat brunch, Danish-style. We visited during peak-brunch on a Saturday morning, to clear our Aperolspritz-imbued heads, and the relaxed atmosphere and views over the water are the perfect compliment to the freshly made food and drink. Booking is recommended!

A gift from Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen to the city, depicting Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale of a mermaid, who gives up everything to be united with a young handsome prince—everyone’s fairytale.

Kastellet Park Kastellet is the perfect place to explore some Copenhagen history. The site houses working military buildings, as well as a perfectly preserved windmill and pentagon moat ramparts—take a book for a perfect afternoon.

Christiania Welcome to bohemia! The autonomous anarchist district in Christianshavn, on the outskirts of the city, is well worth the cycle or 45-minute walk from the city centre. Its 900 inhabitants live by their own rules, independent of city authorities. Photographs are forbidden.

Best for…sleeping sea-side From Abereiddi in Pembrokeshire, enjoy stunning views across the Irish Sea, especially as the sun sets towards Pen Berry mountain or as the moon lingers over the sea. With direct access onto the Wales Coast Path, you’ll be able to take in Pembrokeshire’s rugged cliff tops, sheltered coves, beaches and winding estuaries. Local highlights are Blue Lagoon and award-winning fish and chips at The Shed in historic Porthgain harbour. CELTIC CAMPING SA62 6DG

VICTORIA GARAGE

Best for…fresh-air thinking

At Victoria Garage, we provide economical maintenance to the highest standards offering main dealer facilities at much lower prices. Appointment times can be made to accommodate your schedule.

A few miles along the River Lledr from Betws-y-Coed in Snowdonia sits Tan Aeldroch Farm. Of our three picks, this is the site that takes you closest to nature, but given that you’re in the heart of Snowdonia National Park there’s no point lounging around with the sheep. Dolwyddelan Castle, Hafan Eryri at Snowdon’s peak and Zip World are nearby attractions. TAN AELDROCH FARM LL25 0LZ

Best for…king-ing it Campers have full run of the fantastically well-preserved castle in Usk, in the grounds of which this campsite sits. The site overlooks the mid-Wales market town, with its charming independent shops, tearooms and pubs, and beyond to Crickhowell and the Black Mountains. Though you’d only be 10 minutes from the M4, you could be anywhere in the world. CASTLE KNIGHTS NP15 1SD

Very polite and friendly service. My car was fixed promptly and is running really well at an extremely reasonable cost.

Penarth Community Garden The garden at Penarth Town Council’s West House has been recently developed to be more accessible to the public. Additional seating and improved planting have been introduced to draw people to the space. Local primary schools are also using the beds and a new greenhouse to cultivate their own fruit and vegetables. Short stories from the garden by the sea

PenarthView #LovePenarth

Penarthians have always been known for their generosity, and recently saw two fundraising drives for charity. Charlotte Court, from Willmore’s 1938, along with Julia Bakshi, Caroline Eva, Sara Siddall, Julie Johnson, Megan Bistram and Elena Griffin, have raised £9,009.12 for breast cancer at Walk the Walk, an overnight marathon walk in London. Penarth View influencer Dave Deane and his sister Sarah Marriott have also raised over £3,000 for small charity Bloodwise, a UK charity who fund research into blood-related cancers, at a 10-kilometre run in Bromsgrove.

Griffin Books re-launch Griffin Books, the town’s independent bookshop has been transformed with a modern interior redesign. Owner Mel Griffin said during the relaunch evening “It’s been a fantastic experience to watch this come together, from the conceptual stages, to the week when we worked flat out to see it happen.”

Plastic Free Penarth At a ceremony on 14 May 2019, Penarth joined a network of communities across the UK who are leading the way on tackling throw-away plastic. The town has been awarded Plastic Free Community status by marine conservation charity, Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), in recognition of the work it has done to start reducing the impact of single-use plastic on the environment. 71

I work from my home studio, with my dog for company. My work mixes bold lines, bright colours with humour and a loose hand-drawn aesthetic. Right now I’m at my desk, I’ve just finished colouring the magazine cover, and now I’m trying to answer these questions so I sound clever and arty.

What was it that made you start drawing? I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. I think most of us draw as children. I just never stopped. It’s what I enjoy, and I’m fortunate enough to have turned it into a job.

How does your process work? Where does the inspiration for your style come from?

Meet Matt

We hope you couldn’t fail but notice our exciting cover this issue. This gorgeous illustration is the work of Matt Joyce. Here, we talk to him about his work, process and Penarth hot-spots. Could you tell us a bit about who you are, what you do, and where you are in the world right now?

I’m a freelance illustrator based in Cardiff, with a focus on mural and map illustrations. I left a full-time design and illustration job in 2017, allowing me to focus on freelance full-time.

72

I start all work by sketching out ideas on paper, and then I usually work them up digitally. As for inspiration, my desk is surrounded by knick-knacks and illustrations from people I admire. I find seeing other people doing amazing work can get me fired up to create things. Also, a childhood of cartoons and videogames rattling around in my brain plays a part.

On a visit to Penarth, what are your go-to places? Where would people find Matt Joyce? Here’s a few of my favourite spots: Mint & Mustard for some tasty curries, Bar 44 for tapas, Washington tea for a coffee (maybe some cake too), and you can’t beat an ice cream and a stroll on the pier. Also, we take Lola to Cosmeston quite regularly. That’s a great place for a walk.
