CROESO—WELCOME SHWMAE Autumn, the year’s last, loveliest smile What a summer it’s been! We’ve had one of the hottest and longest summers on record, Penarth has seen events aplenty and the town centre remains buoyant. For autumn, we’re looking at the people of Penarth. There’s no doubt that people are the heart of any thriving community—compassion, support, and willingness to make our home a better place are commonplace here. We’ve been lucky to meet some of the town’s greatest ambassadors, but we know we’ve barely scratched the surface! Turn to page 12 to find out more. We’re also introducing our new influencer, Jack Wynn, who will write a regular Men’s Edit for us—we can’t wait to work with him. He’s joining our team of fantastic, passionate influencers, who give us their take on hot topics in their field every quarter. Claire Jacklin explores slow fashion, Amy Adams asks the women of Penarth and Cardiff what beauty means, and Rae Carpenter interviews ITV’s Beth Fisher who is breaking barriers in the sports industry. We also welcome back vet Dave Deane, who looks at how to prevent our pets going plus-size, and Angharad Evans explores how nutrition can help mental, as well as physical well-being. Miffy Shaw is also back to meet Instagram sensation, and star of S4C’s Dan Do programme, Emma Meese. To top that all off, Jo Baldwin gives us an introduction to surrealist Barcelona, and new team member Megan Jones gives us her impressions from Venice. As usual, local Specsavers branches have once again helped us to bring you Penarth’s biggest What’s On guide, helping you to keep an eye on this autumn’s events! Keep your copy of Penarth View close to hand to find out what events are happening, and remember to use your high street this season, especially with Christmas on the horizon. Don’t forget to mention seeing them in Penarth View too! Now, flick the kettle on, put your feet up, and allow yourself to turn the world off and relax!

are pleased to announce the return of their popular Penarth Apple Day this autumn. Apple Day is a community event that was launched by the environmental organisation Common Ground in 1990 and is celebrated in towns and villages across the UK. The event is a celebration of seasonal and local food, and highlights issues around biodiversity and ecology. This year, Penarth Apple Day will be taking place on Sunday, 20 October, in the Community Garden at West House, Stanwell Road. The event will have several stalls selling and promoting local produce, including locally brewed ciders from Vale Cider, and a range of preserves and pickles from Penarth-based A Bit of a Pickle. As in previous years, GPG volunteers will be on hand with their apple press to juice apples. Visitors are encouraged

to bring along apples from their own gardens to be juiced. There will also be a café serving hot and cold refreshments.
We are delighted to be bringing back this community event which has proved so popular in the past. Apple Day is a true celebration of the seasonal and the local and an ideal opportunity to highlight some of our many wonderful local producers. —GPG committee member and Apple Day organiser Anthony Slaughter GPG will also use the event to promote their Shop Penarth loyalty card scheme and the ongoing Plastic Free Penarth campaign. Join us at the Community Garden at West House, Stanwell Road. The event is free and open to all.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Influencer
Angharad Evans Penarth-based Nutritional Therapist
re out mo Check e websit on our w.co.uk hvie penart
Being diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder led me to discover the Hilary Newman Clinic, where I embraced the power of natural remedies. Within months, I no longer needed medication to manage my illness. I was inspired by this treatment and retrained as an Allergy and Nutritional Therapist. I now have a clinic in the heart of Penarth where I offer bespoke treatment to patients for a variety of illnesses.
T
wo years ago, whilst working as a teacher, I was diagnosed with three auto-immune conditions, one being Lupus. It affects the body in numerous ways. I remember the incredible muscular and joint pain and the heaviness of my limbs. I experienced a horrible array of symptoms including fatigue, a rash on my cheeks and nose, severe weight loss and the ‘blue’ effect of Raynaud’s Syndrome on my lips and fingers. During this time, I was prescribed a course of steroids and immunosuppressant medication, a course of treatment I accepted that I would be taking for the rest of my life. Once the medication was stable, I decided to fulfil a dream. I was granted a career break and travelled to Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand for 5 months.
24
It was amazing, and I returned, influenced by the different lifestyle, feeling better and determined to find a way of beating my condition. Natural therapy would free me of my condition, and after 3 months of adopting this new approach I was no longer taking the prescribed medication, and in November 2011, my consultant declared that, astoundingly, my blood tests were normal. Natural therapies had effectively fixed me, and I was determined to share my experiences and encourage others to adopt this natural approach.
www.penarthview.co.uk
PENARTH VIEW CO-EDITOR, WILL SUMMERS, TRIES NATURAL THERAPIES After learning more about what we put our bodies through with Angharad, I was surprised how differently I thought about food after a few sessions. The result? A more balanced and holistic approach to nutrition, mental and physical health. Though I was wary at first at some of the methods we tried, Angharad’s approach definitely gave me food for thought. To start with, a simple process of grouping foods together and avoiding certain groups for set periods of time opened my eyes to how my body reacted to each food group. It didn’t take me long to realise that my love of dairy on the outside wasn’t reciprocated on the inside! Through a process of elimination, other foods such as spinach, oats, pork, tea and not surprisingly sugar, were also on the hit list. What I found interesting was how each food group had a reaction on my body. Some groups introduce bacteria, which isn’t good for the system, and other food groups are more prone to parasites, and can cause more chronic symptoms. I can certainly relate to the headaches, mood swings and fatigue that Angharad immediately targets. For me, the positives that have come out of doing this programme are not down just to food though. We also looked at the products I use on my skin, discussed routines, and encouraged a rounded approach to general health. I became more open to meditation, taking breaks, eating better foods and exercising effectively. Changing my food habits has been quite the challenge! However, I’m very glad that I’ve had the opportunity to look at my relationship with food in a different way. Diolch Angharad!

VALE FILM FEST ARRIVES The Vale Film Fest is a brand new film festival being launched this autumn. Its aim is to animate the unique venues in the rural Vale of Glamorgan with films, workshops, creative talks and immersive events.
M
adeleine Sims, the curator of the festival said: “The
response from the rural community has been astonishing with regards to the film talent and unique venues that are here. It was from this that we arrived at the name for this year’s festival, ‘The Hidden Here’ which is of course a play on words which defines what our festival celebrates.”
St Hilary Church, Cowbridge Town Hall, Coed Hills, Dresd Studios & GJD Air Museum in St Athan. The programme of events will include discussions and masterclasses in green screen, make-up, prosthetics, set and prop work, workshops on animation and puppeteering, a Q&A with industry experts, and of course screenings. There will be an official selection of films included in this year’s festival available to watch at many different venues across the Vales. At the Dresd studios in St Athan, a WWII-themed event has activities including Hut 104 and the escape tunnels. Film-makers will be on hand to talk about their craft and how films are created.
The festival itself is scheduled to take place in a variety of venues across the Vale of Glamorgan— from St Cadoc’s Church, St Donats Castle, Cosmeston Medieval Village,

For the festival finale, Dresd Studios will be hosting the Guinness World Record attempt for the largest ever film quiz on 5 October. Lynn McFarlane from Dresd Studios told us: “With over 500 spectators
needed to break the record, we have had a lot of fun planning this with teams of 10 being grouped and immersed into props and sets from films and much loved TV shows.” Closer to home, Petra AydinBarberini, from Rowley’s of Penarth, has been assisting in the hunting down of additional venues in the Vale to take part in the festival, as well as helping bring together new collaborations. Petra says of the festival: “This event is a call to
create, it’s brokering unlikely new partnerships, and I hope it has great potential to build an annual festival in future. I thoroughly recommend you seek out the hidden gems of the Vale. You’d be amazed at the venues you never knew existed. “Everyone can have fun making a one-minute film for the competition. There’s a comprehensive guide to making your own film, the important thing is to join in and have a go. Who knows you might end up on the big screen” The festival is partnered with University of South Wales’ Film and Television School, who are supporting the short film competition, which asks entrants to produce a one minute short. The winning entries will be shown at the Festival finale. PenarthView #LovePenarth

Fancy making your own one-minute video? Take a look at the guide below People often think you need to go to big cities or famous places to tell interesting stories. But what about places that are closer? We want you to tell a story about a place that’s near you. It could be a back garden, a village, a field, a wood, a beach, or a building. Your film could be fiction or fact. It can be live action (where you film real people or things) or animation. But it must be no more than a minute long, and it must fit the title The Hidden Here.

As a Personal Fitness Trainer, with my company LiveFIT Wales Cymru, I work in the community, for the community, and with the community on their health and fitness. Life is short. Without moving our bodies and eating healthily, it’s shorter still. I’m also the health and fitness expert for S4C’s FFIT Cymru and QVC, the UK’s largest shopping and lifestyle network.
Winning 44 caps in Welsh Hockey over a career spanning 15 years, Beth Fisher was also the first woman to commentate on men’s football for BBC Radio Wales. She is also an ambassador for Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign. Now, as on-air sports reporter for ITV Cymru Wales, She talks to Rae Carpenter about career, breaking boundaries and her love of home. What did it mean to be the first female football commentator for BBC Wales? To be the first in anything is always a great honour, and whilst it shouldn’t have taken until 2019 for this to happen, I will always be grateful for the opportunity and the platform to have broadcast as a football commentator. Hopefully it will show budding sports journalists that anything really is possible!
34
www.penarthview.co.uk
Can you tell us about some highlights from your sporting career? In my eyes there is no greater honour than standing with your teammates and singing the national anthem of Wales. I had a sporting career plagued with injury, and didn’t achieve the things I wanted, but I truly believe everything happens for a reason. Playing sport has taken me around the world and I’ve met friends for life.
What do you see the future holding for women, LGBTQ+ and disabled people in sport, in Wales?
You’ve been instrumental in campaigns such as #WatchHerGo and #RainbowLaces, how would you inspire Penarth View readers to support these campaigns and get involved with sport? Community clubs are really struggling to survive due to lack of volunteers and finances. I have covered a lot of local-level sport, and it really is the heartbeat of the community. So the one thing I ask is that people support with their feet and go to support all Penarth clubs—of course wearing a pair of rainbow laces!
Congratulations on your new role at ITV, what can we expect from ITV’s newest sports reporter? I said in my interview that I wanted to be my authentic self on-screen— and for me that means being able to look how I want, dress how I want, and use a style of reporting that I feel represents me well. I want little girls and boys to see me and realise that not everyone has to be the same!
PenarthView #LovePenarth
In my honest opinion we are moving too slowly in representation for all in sport. Yes, it has improved, but for example there are still a low level of the BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic) community who represent our sports both on and off the pitch, and we can’t just ignore it anymore. We all have a duty to ensure that every type of person is represented in our workplace and social circles. One of my favourite sayings is if you can see it, you can be it. It’s as simple as that in my eyes.
You’ve lived in Cardiff Media City, Pontcanna, and elsewhere… What’s the pull of Penarth? Quite simply it’s where my heart is. I grew up here and most of my family live here, so as soon as the opportunity came up to move back I didn’t hesitate twice. I have the happiest of memories growing up in Penarth, and I could easily live here for the rest of my life!
How would you describe Penarth in 3 words? Home! Sweet! Home!

A completely new and unforgettable way for children to immerse themselves in the wonder of the Welsh coastline, this September sees the launch of Beach School across Westbourne Prep and Nursery. The coastal cousin of the Forest School concept encourages pupils to explore beyond the confines of the classroom, learning outdoors in the natural environment, and where better than the amazing natural resource beside Penarth pier! As well as learning to appreciate the natural beauty of the Welsh coastline, children will directly learn about plastic pollution, begin to understand tidal forecasts and lunar cycles, and importantly, get plenty of fresh air and exercise. With the children already actively involved in the Plastic Free Penarth campaign and walking a daily mile, Beach School will bring a whole new dimension to their learning and development.

INDEPENDENCE Beach schools are a great way to create resilience and develop children ready to answer their own questions.
CONFIDENCE BUILDING For some young children entering a new academic environment can initially be stressful which can impact confidence. Learning outdoors encourages children to take wellthought-out risks as well as actively encouraging interaction with others. On the other hand, children who may feel their skills are not as well suited for an academic environment are presented with an opportunity to shine. This can transfer confidence back into the classroom.
6
KNOWLEDGE & UNDERSTANDING Offering a deeper understanding and appreciation of nature, Beach School enables children to make exciting new observations and identify different coastal wildlife, flora and fauna. Join in the fun! Beach School runs throughout the curriculum from xt Nursery and Our ne day l open o o h Reception classes c all-s DAY, onwards. THURS ER Register on our B 3 OCTO website below m 9.30a to learn more.
SOCIAL SKILLS & TEAM BUILDING A beach environment presents many more opportunities to engage a child in group activities which helps to develop their social skills. Even the change in surroundings alone can greatly help a child to become more approachable.
MOTIVATION & CONCENTRATION Beach school is a great way to get a child to participate in exploratory learning and play activities. It will also develop the ability to focus on specific tasks and concentrate for extended periods of time. Afterwards kids tend to express a positive attitude towards learning.
For those interested in finding out more about Westbourne, we warmly invite private visits and tours all year round.

Chocolate fruit slices
Pop some apple slices or clementine segments on lollipop sticks to dunk in chocolate, caramel or peanut butter. Decorate with nuts, 100s and 1000s, or coconut or chocolate sprinkles for a quick and easy treat. Take it a step further by creating fruit and marshmallow skewers. Minimal effort, and it’s something the kids can do safely. 38

THE WORK-LIFE BALANCING ACT Influencer
Jack Wynn
Freelance men’s fashion and aesthetic journalist
I am a freelance journalist living in Cardiff city centre. Prior to moving here, I worked as an editor and reporter in London for various industries, from men’s fashion, to aesthetic medicine. I interviewed public figures and politicians, and I have worked with businesses to develop their social presence.
S
etting up early in time for the daily 9am conference call, meetings with clients to discuss potential new projects, the agonising ordeal working out the monthly expenditure and—most importantly—the 6pm curfew to have dinner with the family or make a friend’s birthday party can certainly take its toll and prove challenging. Managing a business and doing everything in your power to be involved in all aspects of your family’s and friends’ lives is overwhelming for anyone. Here, Penarth View speaks with Steve Morgan, a Caerphilly-based father-of-two and owner of Morgan Online Marketing to find out first-hand how he juggles the problematic task of separating his business and family lives.
What does a typical day look like for you? I know it sounds cliché, but there’s no typical working day. I’m a freelance digital marketing consultant so my usual day-to-day work mostly involves tasks and activities for clients based around that. I also juggle running the Cardiff SEO socials and promoting a book that I recently self-published called Anti-Sell.
40
www.penarthview.co.uk
Where and how I work varies, though. I have a home office but also work out of Welsh ICE, a co-working space in Caerphilly. This depends on whether I’m doing the school run that day, or whether my wife is going to her office or working away. I also try to work four days per week instead of five, so that I can spend more time with my two-year-old son.
What would you say is the hardest part of maintaining work-life balance? Getting the balance right in terms of how many clients you work with at any one time. I try and aim for four to six billable hours in an eight-hour day, but that doesn’t account for holidays, or sick days, or if I under-quote a project.
What challenges did you face with maintaining a social and family life at the start of your freelance career? I’m very lucky in that I did a lot of my networking pre-freelance and I didn’t start a family until later. It’s a lot more of a challenge now that I have two children aged five and two. That said, I thankfully can still network with people via social media and also at my co-working space, so there’s still some social aspects even if I have less availability to attend networking events.
Now with children, are there other pressures to maintaining the balance? Absolutely! Things like the school run and doctor’s appointments can eat into my work day. There’s also the guilt that comes with thinking I should be taking more time off to spend with them. I mostly work four-day weeks, so I’m already spending extra time with them than I might have done otherwise. And if I take any time to myself—which is important to do—I feel guilty that I could be working or spending time with the family.
PenarthView #LovePenarth
What advice would you give to other business owners that struggle with separating their personal and work lives? Separate your home life and your work life as much as possible. Try and get yourself into an office or co-working space that’s separate to your home— that way, when you get home in the evening, you can switch off from work. If that’s not possible, dedicate a room in the house as an office. I made the mistake years ago of working a fulltime job from my living room coffee table and I felt like I was there 24/7!
South Wales is full of entrepreneurs! What advice do others have to maintain a good work-life balance? “The rule to balancing work and life is [...] learning when to be, and not to be, available. Honestly, people will not mind!” PETER IBBETSON Co-Founder/Director of JournoLink
“Take time out for yourself and your family – children aren’t young forever, and it goes by in a flash!” CLAIRE ROACH Founder of Daily Deals UK
“Sometimes I find the work has to take a priority, and other times childcare and home matters take over, but it is important to recognise that both exist and need to work in harmony.” CARYL THOMAS Director of HR Dept Cardiff

My fascination for the transformative effects of make-up began much younger when it became a trusted friend to me, whilst being viciously bullied at school from the age of thirteen. But what is beauty now? It is such an emotive subject and upon writing this article I wondered on other women’s thoughts and individual journeys. A little apprehensive that some might view beauty in a feared and archaic form, I couldn’t have been more soothed, and proud, upon reading their wonderful offerings. We’re in a new era—yes! Beauty is a way of living, a conscious movement in how we view our own identities and our perception of beauty in others. It’s embracing our sense of self, wholly, unapologetically, and unreservedly. Claire Jacklin
Penarth-based Personal Stylist
I have been a resident of Penarth for 11 years. Having moved here from London to settle and have a family, I brought a wealth of fashion styling knowledge to South Wales. I apply my personal styling skills to help transform my clients, not only to help them look better but also to feel better about themselves.
F
or the past three months, I have been supporting Slow Fashion Season, by committing to buying no brand new clothes, one of over 14,000 participants across the globe to do so. Have I found it easy? No! Am I glad I have done it? Yes! And here are the reasons why.
Slow Fas Seas
/ 1 I’ve been able to see what clothes I already own, as I have been forced to dig deep and consciously look at what I would normally just swipe past. / 2 I have reworn items that have had sentimental value that I probably never would have thought to wear again. Such as the dress that I bought for my honeymoon thirteen years ago! I enjoyed it all over again! / 3 My mindset has been altered. Normally, I would associate a new occasion with a new outfit. I thankfully realise that there is no need to do this. You can fall in love with past items again and make them work harder.
44
There have been some downsides but even these have come with enlightenment.
/ 1 I have missed adding new exciting pieces to my wardrobe to create ’new looks’. However, my eyes have been opened to sites such as Depop where you can pick up pre-loved items, which is good for the environment and your wallet! / 2 I do love a bargain and I have missed seeing if I can pick up an item for half the price, at the end of the season. I’ve done this for a long time. I spend a great deal of time in shops with clients, and I get a real kick from stalking and swooping, as I like to call it!
/ 3 As a stylist, and hopefully this is only linked to my love of fashion, I have felt a bit old hat in my outfits. I love wearing an updated item, but again, that doesn’t have to mean brand new. Pre-loved can still be new to you!
www.penarthview.co.uk
It hasmade me more conscious and it’s made me rethink the way I shop. I would also do it again as I have obviously not spent a penny for the last three months! As Vivienne Westwood says, and what I reiterate to my clients:
“Buy less, choose well, make it last.” We really don’t need vast amounts of clothes, we just need ones that coordinate well and can be styled in several ways. As always, I am on hand to help you with this, if you are stuck in a style rut! My hope is that all brands embrace this ethos and start producing ethical clothing lines, putting an end to the vast amounts of waste that goes to landfill. We also need to question who made our clothing, and in what conditions? I urge you all to go through your wardrobes and have a good look at what you already own. Why not get together for a style swap and get your new from a friend? Try charity shops, there really are some hidden gems to be found. Look at Depop and eBay. Together we can make a difference and hopefully slow fashion will be the norm for the younger generations, making us all far more aware of what we put on our backs. I was very pleased to see that my daughter’s new school t-shirts from M&S were made with responsibly sourced cotton and had technology to help garments look newer for longer. By doing so, we reduce their waste, carbon and water footprint, by retaining them as opposed to replacing them. A great start to the new school term, and by sizing-up, they will hopefully last her a little longer too! Much love, Claire

This eagerly anticipated sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale picks up the story 15 years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead. For those who can’t get enough of the TV adaptation, this one is a must.
With the rugby world cup set to dominate autumn viewing, former Wales captain Sam Warburton’s candid autobiography is a must-read. Never before has a rugby memoir given such intimate access not only to the realities of the dressing room and the heroes and villains of the modern game, but also to the unique mindset required to make someone a genuinely great leader of men.
For those eagerly awaiting the new Tom Gates book (Spectacular School Trip - Really, published October 3rd) or the latest in the Wimpy Kid series (Wrecking Ball, published November 5th), why not pre-order from us for just £7.99 each - a full £5 off RRP! Visit www.

PERIOD HOME UPDATED
P
enarth is full of beautiful period houses and this house, in a leafy road near the town centre, had already been extended when the present owners bought the property. Having the extra room was a bonus but made the kitchen feel like a corridor, isolating the cook from the rest of the family. The brief was to create a welcoming room where friends could gather for coffee or drinks and the family would all be able to enjoy the space together. An old utility room was removed and a new built-in cupboard with matching doors and bespoke shelving inside hides the washing machine and gives storage. Top of the client’s wishlist was an island, useful for laying out food, serving drinks and having lunch. A pale greige paint throughout gives a neutral background for colourful artwork and accessories. A glazed tall cabinet is neatly fitted in a shallow alcove, the perfect spot to store glasses and spirits. The new kitchen now suits both the style of the house and the lifestyle of its owners perfectly.

At Chalkhouse, designing and making beautiful furniture is our passion, we relish the opportunity to turn a badly designed, outdated kitchen into a thing of beauty, combining functionality with real style.

I live in Penarth with my builder-husband Gareth, our three-year-old daughter Frankie, and Tugboat, our awesome French Bulldog! I studied interior design at college and have been renovating properties with Gareth for the last fifteen years.
F
rom curating her blog 1fiveone, to starring on S4C’s Dan Do interiors programme, Emma Meese certinly knows her stuff. With a love for interiors, lifestyle and crafting, she is an avid DIY-er, and is a keen baker. Here, she gives Penarth View readers an insight into her process, her impressive Instagram following (22.3k followers!) and reveals ther favourite item at home.
How do you know when interior design is ‘good’? Interior design is like a jigsaw puzzle. Individually the pieces don’t always make sense, but when you bring them all together in a room they look great.
What do you think the future holds for Instagram and interiors? I believe it’s going to continue to thrive and grow. When you’re renovating or decorating, it’s rare that your friends in real life are doing the same, so Instagram is a great place to turn to for inspiration and advice. When you see a photo in a magazine it could be entirely staged so it’s great on Instagram to see how people live with their room designs in real life.

What’s your top tip for growing an Instagram following?
✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓
✓
Slow and steady wins the race Be authentic and be social. Spend more time on other people’s accounts than your own. Find other similar accounts to follow by using and following relevant hashtags . Follow accounts you aspire to and look at who they’re following and engage with them Like and comment on posts which interest you, and follow each account. When they next log on to Instagram they will see you have begun a conversation with them and are more likely to reply and follow back. Allow your account to grow organically over time.
What’s the first thing you look out for in a interior space? Functionality. It’s no good it looking great if it doesn’t work for the people living there. There are lots of clever things you can do these days to make a space both practical and pretty, so it’s worth taking some time to plan ahead. We used magnetic plaster on some walls so we can still stick up the photos and notes in the kitchen.
PenarthView #LovePenarth
A quick heads up! Our new kitchen design studio is nearly finished, so you will soon be able to come and see for yourselves our beautiful kitchen furniture, made in our own workshops in Cardiff. Why choose an off-the-peg, uninspiring solution when you could have something totally individual and unique, handmade just for you?
/ 3 Bessemer Close, Cardiff CF11 8DL / www.chalkhouseinteriors.co.uk / mail@chalkhouseinteriors.co.uk / 029 2023 3308 or 07713 812 345
What is your favourite Item in your house and why? Ooh, that’s a toughie. I love the gold splattered cowhide rug in the front room. It’s a bit like marmite, you either love it or hate it.
If there is an interior trend that you would bring back to life, what would it be? The beauty of trends is they always come around again, with a modern twist. I love the use of colour, but steer clear of using colour in fixtures and fittings (remember avocado bathroom suites?!). I love the quality and lines of mid-century furniture and we inherited a G Plan sideboard which we complimented with more modern mid-century furniture.
If you weren’t following your interior passion what other passion of yours would you be pursuing? As long as I’m making or baking something, I’m happy!

Fall into a new home in time for Christmas. Autumn is fast approaching and soon the nights will be drawing in and the leaves on the trees will turn a vibrant amber and red. Autumn provides the last ‘hurrah’ for buyers to be in their new home just in time for Christmas. So if you’re looking to buy or sell, Watts & Morgan are here to help!
1. Valuation
Despite Brexit continuing to be a major source of uncertainty, the property market remains strong. A GOV.UK House Price Index Average report saw an annual rise of 1.2% to April 2019 in house prices in the UK. This was encouraged by the latest Hometrack UK Cities House Price Index report which cited that Edinburgh (+5.1%) registered the highest level of year-on-year house price growth, closely followed by Liverpool (+4.9%) and Cardiff (+4.7%).
3. Marketing your property
September and October typically herald a post-summer boom in activity and with Penarth’s idyllic seaside location and charming treelined streets, it is no surprise that many buyers see it as an extremely desirable proposition. At Watts & Morgan we appreciate that the idea of selling your home can be a daunting process, so here is a step-by-step guide to take you through the selling process and how we can help.
We use our expert knowledge of the local market and our buyer database to give you a realistic valuation, vital to selling your property for the best price, within the desired timescale and with the least amount of stress possible.
2. The right estate agent Selling a property can be a complex and overwhelming task which is why Watts & Morgan are here to help, with 162 years of experience. In order to find the perfect buyer, it is vital that your property receives maximum exposure through multiple marketing channels.
4. Viewings Accompanied viewings by an agent who is knowledgeable of the local area and highly trained to highlight your property’s unique features and other qualities that will appeal to a prospective buyer(s).
5. Offers We will handle all negotiations between you and the buyer, with experienced advice to achieve the best possible price while taking into account market conditions, interest from other parties and recent comparable sales.
6. Sale Agreed Our sales progression team will work tirelessly to ensure your sale completes as smoothly as possible. We will guide you through this process and keep in constant communication to update you.
7. Exchange of Contracts Exchange of contracts occurs once the buyer’s offer is received, all responses to enquiries raised are deemed satisfactory and all parties agree a date for completion.
8. Completion On the day of completion any outstanding monies from the buyer will be transferred to your conveyancer, who in turn will transfer the remaining balance to you.
We have a number of serious buyers registered who are looking for properties. We would love to assist in the sale of your home. Please contact us if you are interested in discussing the marketing of your property. We would be delighted to meet with you.

THE BRAND NEW, STATE-OF-THE-ART
valley veterinary hospital NOW OPEN
July saw a first for Wales with the opening of Valley Veterinary Hospital—the largest such facility in Wales, bringing with it a whole range of benefits to pets and pet owners in South Wales. It boasts ten consultation rooms, six operating theatres, a dedicated dental suite, a hydrotherapy suite and a wide range of physical therapies available with an in-house veterinary physiotherapist, separate dog and cat waiting rooms, dedicated exotic clinics, Wales’ first RWAF-approved Gold Standard Rabbit Clinic, and Wales’ first permanent veterinary CT scanner, with an MRI scanner also on the way soon. As well as being the home to the new out of hours emergency service for Cardiff, the Vale and South Wales Valleys, it will also take referrals from local practices during the day for speciality veterinary work, which might otherwise have gone further afield. Park Vets in Penarth work closely with their other branch on Sanatorium Road in Cardiff, as well as the new Valley Veterinary Hospital to offer priority access to the wide range of services on offer at Valley Veterinary Hospital, and at a competitive rate. This new facility is less than six miles away, giving pet owners in Penarth greater peace of mind when their pet requires more specialist care, closer to home.

Having lived and worked in South Wales for 11 years, initially in Rhondda Cynon Taf and Cardi, I have finally found my home in beautiful Penarth, where I also volunteer as an RNLI crew member. Growing up as the son of a dentist may have influenced my passion for veterinary dentistry.

besity is one of the biggest health problems seen on a daily basis in veterinary practice. Excess calorie intake is the most likely cause and it is rare for medical problems to cause obesity in pets. Dogs are scavengers in the wild, and so they have an inherent need to always fill their stomach, as they do not know when their next meal will be. When kept as pets, we take this concern away from their bodies, but their instinct remains. Many overweight cats and dogs give off the illusion of being poor eaters, and never seem to eat a full meal—this is often because they are always full. This in turn worries some conscientious owners who feel the need to provide them with even more food, and often tastier human food. They will often then become accustomed to this and then refuse their well-balanced pet food. This vicious cycle creates a fussy pet that also consumes too many calories. Our pets are very clever and soon learn how to exploit us and it is up to us to not give in to them.

Even giving treats now and then acts as variable reinforcement, and is similar to gambling, where the occasional reward makes up for all the failed attempts. Making food diaries of everything (including table scraps and treats) that your pet eats over several days can be a very useful tool to highlight the excess they may be getting. If you must feed treats, please consider taking it out of their daily ration, or feeding healthy treats like apple or carrot. The table on the next page highlights just how calorific some human food can be to our furry friends.

Remember, dogs are very active creatures, and although exercise is important, increasing their activity alone is often not enough. Once overweight, it is tricky to reduce your pet’s weight, and it takes a lot of hard work and commitment to do so. Your veterinary practice can help you with this, and provide weight clinics to guide you and your pet through this process. Ask your vet about calorie controlled diets as they can be a very useful tool to aid weight loss.
PenarthView #LovePenarth
TOP TIPS Weighing your pet is good to monitor the trend of your individual pet but you cannot assess if they are overweight simply from this. The right weight for a specific breed varies so much between individuals. The two most useful tools are: You should be able to feel your pet’s individual ribs, but not see them. They should have a waist and taper in after the ribs.

arcelona and the master of surrealist architecture, Antoni Gaudí, are so intrinsically linked that he could easily be mistaken for a patron saint of the city. His fairy-tale, organic style of architecture is both iconic and instantly recognisable, gracing the city with its unique beauty in several locations, and forming a large part of the Catalan capital’s enduring appeal to lovers of art and modernist culture. At Plaça Reial amongst the lively buskers and buzzing cafés you can even admire Gaudí designed lampposts, one of his first work commissions for the city after graduating from Barcelona Architectural School. Barely a corner of the city has been left untouched by this genius’

surrealist vision. There are more than twenty Gaudí sites you could visit throughout the city and surrounding area, seven of which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The crowning masterpiece and arguably most famous of Gaudí’s designs is Basílica of Sagrada Família which has been in ongoing construction since 1882. A devoutly religious man, Gaudí-designed Sagrada Família to be shorter than nearby

Montjuïc hill as he didn’t want his work to be taller than God’s. Casa Batlló is one of the most photographed building in the city and known as the ‘house of bones’ for its skeleton-like appearance. It typifies Gaudí’s fun and fluid approach to design with pretty stained glass and pops of colourful mosaics. Park Güell gives great views over the city and the enchanting gardens contain two Gaudí-designed gingerbread-style houses and pretty collonaded walkways. Don’t overlook Barcelona’s other gems when you visit, as it has more to offer than just Gaudí’s unusual architecture. The ancient Gothic quarter has graced the city for centuries with its narrow, winding streets which open up into pretty squares and hidden courtyards. The La Seu cathedral is a Gothic and neo-Gothic masterpiece and the dazzling Palau de la Música Catalan is one of the most stunning buildings in the city. There is a thriving street art scene in Barcelona, which means the whole city feels like a giant canvas, evoking the work of legends such as Picasso, Miró and Dalí—all of whom were drawn to the city at different times and whose legacies can still be felt to this day.
You can fly to Barcelona directly from Cardiff or Bristol and it’s a great destination to visit year round, although I’d recommend late summer when it’s not too hot or too busy. Visit in October or early November, when it’s started to get colder in Wales but the Spanish sun is still strong enough for eating al fresco and the city is quieter, making it ideal for exploring.

Dylan Thomas
““Though lovers be lost, love shall not.” The Boathouse, where Dylan Thomas penned some of his most famous works, is a short walk through the town of Laugharne. Beautifully situated over the estuary, it is renowned for the romantic link between the writer and his works. Known for its old-time charm, the town’s book and sweet shops still retain their 1940s character, and if you need a pitstop, Brown’s Hotel was recorded as Thomas’ favourite drinking den. Gwyneth Lewis
“In these stones horizons sing” For a trip a little closer to home, take to Wales Millennium Centre, where Gwyneth Lewis’ famous inscription can be seen on the building’s facade. Named the first national poet of Wales in 2005, Lewis’ works include The Most Beautiful Man from the Sea, an oratorio, which included 600 voices made up from Welsh National Opera singers and 500 amateur voices. “Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau” Land of My Fathers was an adaptation of Glan Rhondda adopted by Evan James who wrote the lyrics, and his son James James who composed the music. Everyone has an image of Venice, whether from an artist’s impression or from James Bond’s high-speed gondola chase. Grey skies and water everywhere did nothing to dampen our enthusiasm for seeing the city in the flesh. We got up close and personal with Venice, surrendering ourselves to the winding labyrinth of this romantic city’s back streets.

Ristorante Pizzeria Dolfin
Saint Mark’s Basilica
Following our gut—quite literally—led us to the buzzing Ristorante Pizzeria Dolfin where we ducked out of the drizzle and soaked up the hearty laughter of local labourers lunching. It was our first taste of traditional Venetian community and we left with stomachs seduced and appetites for exploring whetted.
Buoyed by a glass of Amaretto, the amber Italian classic, our next port of call was Saint Mark’s Square. From preening pigeons to string quartets, there’s plenty of live entertainment whilst waiting to enter Saint Mark’s Basilica. The absolute decadence of the church’s interior was breathtaking. Its gold-leaf tiles scattering the late-afternoon shafts of sun illuminated the ceiling as we bathed in its opulent grandeur… all for the price of a 10-minute queue.
After hours of sightseeing, shopping for Venetian masks and being drenched in a downpour, an Aperol Spritz at one of the many bars facing the Grand Canal threw us a lifeline. Watching the gondolas glide up and down under the gaze of the Rialto Bridge, for a restful hour we became part of Venice’s still life, a haven from the waves of tourists flowing across the bridge.
Venice by Vaporetto To fully capture Venice’s beauty, we caught the vaporetto by night for an economic and illuminating tour of the Grand Canal. The name stems from the fact that the boats were originally steam driven— vapour. The mirror reflections of the Venetian architecture in the water really double the pleasure of ‘la dolce vita’.
Palazzo Contarini dela Porta di Ferro As the city began to sleep, so did we, in a hidden treasure just a short walk from the last waterbus stop. Here I enjoyed playing the princess in her palace in a 13th-century palazzo complete with marble flooring, antique tapestries and Murano glass chandeliers; our final snapshot of Venice’s fairy-tale ambience.

ZOMBIE SURVIVAL

Once we drove through the front gates, we had to be prepared! This is Zombie Survival, and it’s not for the fainthearted. After receiving a distress call from Stronghold 101, we were in a group of survivors who only had one thing in common: to exterminate the zombie infestation. Though we were only in a dense forest on the outskirts of Cowbridge, it could’ve been anywhere in the world. It was pitch-black, the only light coming from our torches, and we needed to source guns, ammunition, water and food, all whilst evading and not being captured by a group of blood-thirsty zombies. At times, it felt like a scene straight out of Sandra Bullock’s Bird Box! The course itself is exhilirating. Large enough to get lost in, and dotted with rotting cars, a crashed helicopter, timber fortresses and more. You become accustomed to looking for hiding spaces, and you are constantly aware of a malevolent force that could be just around the next tree. And to conquer the zombies? Guns and BB pellets, they’re stunned for just long enough for you to scarper. Although the zombies are real people, they are made up to look the part, and the feeling of being scared is inescapable—I was terrifed! The whole challenge is complete when all guns, ammunition capsules, water canisters and tins of food are collected. Then the whole evening is celebrated with a burger and a cold drink.

Spectrum Singers have sung on BBC Radio 3 and Radio Wales, at St David’s Hall and in many of the UK’s great cathedrals. The choir performs a mix of chamber and close harmony in 8-parts, so with only 16 auditioned singers, every voice counts. Spectrum Singers are looking for extra voices to join the line-up and will be holding open rehearsals on Wednesdays throughout September. Visit www.spectrumsingers. org.uk/join-us for more information Good luck to Bethan Vaughan Cartwright from Penarth who, this autumn, will be part of a group of fundraisers from Wales taking on a challenge of a lifetime to explore a rare part of Asia to raise money for Marie Curie. Bethan says: “There’s no doubt walking 7-8 hours each day will be tough. I’m looking forward to trekking through the beautiful valleys and paddy fields of northern Vietnam and the Hòa Binh Province, in the knowledge that every step we take will be helping Marie Curie nurses and hospice staff to support more people living with terminal illness”. Gins have a variety of different tasting notes, and Penarth Gin is a truly premium Welsh Dry Gin—it is intensely smooth and carries on surprising you with different tastes long after your first try! It is juniper-led, with subtle notes of peppercorn, orange, lime and grains of paradise. It is distilled in our Garden By The Sea, to be enjoyed by everyone. This is a taste of home, to be shared.
