CROESO—WELCOME SHWMAE A lot as happened since we took over Penarth View two years ago. The country we share with our neighbours, friends, family, and fellow people has become divided. We’re watching closely as the world becomes more introverted in a time when, we believe, we have the responsibility to be more inclusive. Rather than write an Editors’ Letter that tells you what amazing features we have for you in our latest issue (it’s jam packed, as always), we thought we’d take this opportunity to encourage kindness and compassion. These acts go a long way to building communities, livelihoods and happiness. Let’s build each other up, not pull each other down. It’s pretty simple :-) We hope you have a great spring. OUT OF THE ORDINARY There’s a growing trend for second city travel, which means the exploration of lesser-known destinations in a bid to avoid crowds and reduce over-tourism. As travellers think more about their environmental impact, there will also be an increase in interest in older, more sustainable, forms of shared transport like trains or boats. For a true break from it all, spartan holidays combine the idea of a digital detox with minimalist living, whereby you travel with as little as possible and only pack a few analogue accessories.

VEGAN HOLIDAYS As people increasingly choose a vegan lifestyle the number of hotels that cater for this is going to accelerate. Intrepid Holidays now offer vegan food adventure tours in India, Italy and Thailand, with insider tips on where to find the best vegan eats, unique activities such as vegan-friendly cooking classes and authentic new travel experiences.
4
SUSTAINABLE TOURISM Hotels that care for the environment are becoming our favourite type of holiday. Big brands like Marriott have stopped singleuse plastic in toiletries, and airports in Dubai will ban all single-use plastic by the end of 2020. Lagoon Attitude in Mauritius is a brand new adult-only hotel dedicated to social and environmental sustainability, including no single-use plastic, up-cycled furniture, using local produce, marine discovery visits and clean-up initiatives for guests.
FLOATING HOTEL Striking in its bold design, which looks like a bird’s nest crossed with a wooden fort, the new Arctic Bath Hotel in Swedish Lapland has all the wow factor as it’s actually afloat! Visit in summer, when the hotel will be floating on the water to see the midnight sun. And in winter the hotel will be surrounded by a frozen river, and if you’re lucky the Northern Lights will make an appearance.

WHY YOU NEED TO VISIT BERLIN
750 years old, sitting on the River Spree, Berlin is the city of culture, clubbing and currywurst. The German capital’s intoxicating mix of grit, glamour, and anything-goes attitude makes it one of the most dynamic cities on earth. It really is a city that oers something for everyone.

F
rom its high-points, you can see the juxtaposed city—a ripped tapestry of a troubled past being sewn together by a modern thread of peace, hope and prosperity. Obvious must-dos in Berlin include visiting Checkpoint Charlie, Potsdamer Platz, TV Tower, and Brandenburg Gate, now a symbol of German reunification. In fact, there are many highlights, far too many to list, but here are some of our own personal top picks. We love that public transport operates on an honesty system. No barriers, anywhere, though inspectors jump on and off to check tickets, and fine flouters.
Victory Column At the centre of Tiergarten, Berlin’s green lung, is Victory Column (Berlin Siegessäule). If you’re feeling fit, you can climb its 270 steps for panoramic views of the city and its suburbs.
The Reichstag Since 1999, the Reichstag has been the seat of the German federal parliament (the Bundestag), when it reopened following a complete remodelling by the architect Norman Foster. Sitting on its roof is a fantastic glass dome giving spectacular views out to the city and down into the debating chamber below—free for visitors to visit. For fine dining, there really is no beating Käfer, which sits on the rooftop itself.
PenarthView #LovePenarth
Tempelhofer Feld The former Tempelhof airport is now an enormous 355 hectare public park, and the Nazi-built terminal building is now, fittingly, home to art galleries, emergency centres for refugees, and a business start-up hub. Who would have thought cycling along an abandoned airport runway could be possible?
Clubbing Berlin is famous for its hedonistic nightlife. In fact, it generates so much money for the city, that the city authorities gave €1m to soundproofing projects in 2018 to protect clubs from closure. For many, Berghain, a former East Germany power plant, is the pinnacle, if you can get past the notoriously strict security staff.
Memorials Berliners have, in their psyche, a determined want to educate people of its sombre past—those who forget, repeat. Memorials are a testament to that. The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the Memorial to Homosexuals Persecuted Under Nazism, and the Memorial to May 10, 1933 Nazi Book Burning are Top: Memorial to the three of the most-visited ones. Murdered Jews of Europe Topography of Terror, on the site Middle: Reichstag dome of former Gestapo headquarters, interior gives visitors information about Bottom: Berliner Nazi persecution and terror. Hilly Hike: Alder Tree Boardwalk, Coed y Cerrig National Nature Reserve, near Abergavenny Located in the southern part of the Brecon Beacons near Abergavenny, the Alder Tree Boardwalk is the perfect spot to soak in the spring air. Carpeted with bluebells, marsh marigolds, and a large variety of wildflowers in late spring, there’s a choice of taking the boardwalk or a steep trail with a climb of rough stone steps. This walk can be as easy or as challenging as you choose. COED Y CERRIG NP7 7NA

VICTORIA GARAGE
Known for its abundance of wildlife during springtime, the Wetlands are a haven for migrating birds, ranging from swallows and swifts, to house and sand martins, returning from Africa during April and May. The circular walk also includes many sculptures of birds to help you discover the wildlife that starts to nest, and if you can’t quite find them in the reed beds, you’ll definitely hear them! Great for kids and to spot a line of ducklings.
At Victoria Garage, we provide economical maintenance to the highest standards offering main dealer facilities at much lower prices. Appointment times can be made to accommodate your schedule.

Sunday Stroll: Nicholaston Woods Walk, Oxwich Nature Reserve Residing in the beautiful Gower coast, already known for its natural beauty, many people miss this beautiful spot. The reserve runs right along the coastline, so it’s perfect to get a snap of the beautiful bluebells, cowslips and primroses that line the woods. DOGGY DAYS OUT For many pet owners, it wouldn’t be a holiday without their fourlegged companion. Plenty of opportunities to get out in the fresh air and no need for dog sitters. Being dog dads ourselves, we know that we plan our holidays around Winston, so here are some of our top tips. The first tip is to be prepared. Winston has an over-night bag which has all his essentials: lead, travelling water bowl, small containers of food, towel for drying off, and plenty of poo bags. We take as many of his comforts along with us too, like his favourite toys, a blanket and his bed, so that he doesn’t get anxious. A list will help you make sure you don’t forget anything— we’ve forgotten his lead in the past.
Wales is a country of adventure, so there are plenty of opportunities for simple walks. The summit of Pen y Fan is a mecca for hikers, and for dogs too! The views from the top are spectacular, with the wild, exposed moorland opening out in front of you. Winston, as a cairn terrier, feels right at home, amongst the craggy peaks and rocky outcrops! The Wales Coast Path, which runs through Penarth itself, is another great place for walking. A favourite for us is a section around St Davids, where you’ll find the Blue Lagoon at Abereiddi (pictured). It’s a setting straight out of The Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. There are an increasing number of dog-friendly cottages, hotels and B&Bs available across Britain—in the cities, as well as in the country—with many pubs, cafés and restaurants opening their doors to dogs too. This is a rapidly growing area of the tourism market, with a variety of holidays available catering for fourlegged friends, including everything from great walks and camping, to dine with

your dog and doggy spa breaks. And being a coastal nation means there’s also almost always a beach in easy reach. Some hotels also offer a 24/7 vet service via an app, for added peace of mind. Though if they don’t, it’s a very good idea to find out the nearest vet, should anything go wrong. Did you know you can also take any well-behaved dog with you on the train network? So you can hop on the train at Penarth and end up at any other station, anywhere in the country, with your dog. And best of all, you won’t need to buy a ticket for them, since they travel for free. There’s even a #dogsontrains hashtag! Go check it out. When it comes to travelling with your dog, I always remember this little story of a man who wrote a letter to a small hotel he planned to visit on his vacation: “I would very much like to bring my dog with me. He is well-groomed and very well behaved. Would you be willing to permit me to keep him in my room with me at night?” An immediate reply came from the hotel owner, who said, “I’ve been operating this hotel for many years. In all that time, I’ve never had a dog steal towels,

bed clothes, silverware or pictures off the walls. I’ve never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly. And I’ve never had a dog run out on a hotel bill. Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at my hotel. And, if your dog will vouch for you, you’re welcome to stay here, too.” Happy travels!

f you are going away this year, remember to consider your pets. Our pets can be quite sensitive to change and even things that we would not consider to be stressful can cause our pets anxiety. There are many measures that can be taken to reduce this, but aiming to keep their routine as normal as possible is a good start. As some change is inevitable, both herbal remedies and spray or plug-in pheromones can be considered. You may be lucky enough to have friends and family who are able to look after your pet while you’re away. This can maintain a familiar environment, thus minimising stress— but be sure to return the favour. If leaving your pets with trusted friends or family is not an option, there are pet sitters which will look after your pet in their own home. There are lots of good sitters available, like Paws of the Vale www.pawsofthevale.com

If you do decide to put them into kennels or a cattery, then we would always advise going with a recommendation from friends or family. Good kennels will require up-to-date vaccinations so check this with your vet practice in advance. If they are overdue, your vet can help advise you on whether they need to restart a vaccination course or not. In some situations this may be two injections four weeks apart. Many, but not all, kennels will also require your dog to have had the kennel cough vaccine. Please check with your vet and your kennels before getting the kennel cough vaccine as your vet will advise you on when your pet is fully vaccinated, but individual kennels also have their own rules. If you have decided to take your pet abroad with you, ensure you plan this well in advance. We would advise that you research the specific requirements for travel in accordance with the country you are travelling to.

PESKY PARASITES Taking your pet abroad does not come without risk, as there are several parasites such as sand flies and ticks that can harbour diseases not endemic in the UK. Please ensure you speak to your vet prior to travel to ensure you are taking the appropriate precautions while you are away. Your dog is likely to require a tapeworm treatment prior to re-entry into the UK.

DRAWING ATTENTION TO ANIMATION Penarth is chock-a-block full of interesting creatives, and in this first of a new series of interviews, we speak to Penarth-based animator Matthew Gravelle-Eagles about his talent, his favourite projects and where his favourite Penarth haunts are. He is also a part-time lecturer in Animation at the University of South Wales.
Taps (2003) Director: Matthew Gravelle Producer: Matthew Gravelle/S4C
M
atthew Gravelle-Eagles is an award-winning animator and lecturer. A graduate from Newport Film School, Matthew has collaborated on a range of projects including multi-award winning short films, web designs and commercial campaigns. His own personal short animated films have been selected at film festivals worldwide, receiving several awards and nominations, including a Welsh BAFTA award for Best Newcomer. He has been interviewed on television and radio programmes, and his work has been broadcast nationally and internationally. He combines traditional hand-drawn animation with digital methods, prioritising choreography and sound to express his ideas and explore personal subject matters. Find out more about Matthew’s work at www.matthewgravelle.com
Hi Matthew, thanks for speaking with us. What is the inspiration behind your work? I’m inspired by life experiences. My current project, Dear Dog, is a short animated film about the close friendship I had with my dog Sam, when I was young. He was my soulmate, so it was him who was the inspiration.
What is unique about your work? For commercial animation I work digitally, but for my personal work I animate traditionally using pencil and paper. This isn’t unique but is quite uncommon nowadays. It’s my preferred way of expressing my ideas as it’s more personal—you really can’t beat the pencil!
What are the biggest challenges you face? How do you overcome them? Animation takes a long time to produce, so the biggest challenge is staying motivated. Being around other creative and inspiring artists helps me overcome this. I have also found that a steady supply of tea and Welsh cakes helps immensely.
How long, on average, do you spend working on a project? This can vary hugely. A 30 second commercial can take up to four months to complete with a team of people, but working independently... well, let’s just say my hair wasn’t grey when I started this current project about Sam. 22
www.penarthview.co.uk
PENARTH VIEW CREATIVE SECTION SPONSORED BY ROWLEY’S THE JEWELLER
THE JEWELLERS How did you become an animator? Did someone teach you, or are you self-taught? As a young child I loved telling stories through drawing. I then saw The Jungle Book and never looked back. I eventually studied animation at Newport Film School before starting in the industry working on television commercials for clients including Procter & Gamble (London and New York), United Airlines (Minneapolis) and Kal Kan (New York).

Preliminary sketches from Matthew’s upcoming project
What is your favourite kind of project to illustrate? Why? Projects that offer the opportunity to study and draw the human figure. I often observe dancers and how they express emotion through body language. Capturing their poses through drawing helps inform my own work when staging important drawings.
Describe your signature art style in 3 words. Fluid, expressive and often minimalistic.
PenarthView #LovePenarth
What would be your ideal project? The one I’m working on now, Dear Dog. Each short film I make is incredibly personal to me so couldn’t be more ideal. Once I have finished this film, I plan to develop another short animated film, this time using dance as a narrative principle.
What are your go-to hangouts in Penarth? Anywhere that’s dog friendly and I’m there. Nothing makes me happier than spending time in the company of dogs... oh, and my husband! I walk dogs quite regularly for friends and neighbours, and they really are man’s best friend.

ARE YOU DRINKING ENOUGH WATER? Influencer

I have a background in pharmacology, psychiatry and addictions spanning over 30 years. I love to consider all things to do with health and wellbeing, of both the mind and the body. I believe good lifestyle decisions are made when we have the right information.
W
e all know (I hope) that drinking enough water is important for our general health, but for some reason we regularly don’t drink enough. 60-70% of the human body is water, and the current advice is to drink a minimum of 8-10 glasses of water a day. However, the amount will also depend upon other factors such as diet, the weather, and activity. It makes sense that if we are exercising in warm weather, we will need more water than sitting at our desk on a cool day. Rather than focus on exact amounts to drink, a general rule is to ensure that your urine always stays pale yellow in colour . According to the RNLI (2016), a staggering 86% of us in Wales do not drink enough water . Maybe it’s because we have so much rain—it puts us off! Other highlights from this study suggest that women drink more water than men, and people aged over 55 are less likely to drink water compared to those aged 25-34. A person’s overall risk of dehydration increases with age due to the natural loss of one’s sense of thirst, and can be exacerbated by medications that
24
promote fluid loss. This risk is even greater for those who suffer with dementia as they have the added issue of simply forgetting to drink. I love the idea of hydrating Jelly Drops, specifically designed to assist those with dementia. Symptoms of dehydration are wide-ranging, and it’s not just about having a dry mouth, feeling thirsty or having dark urine. If you feel thirsty then you are already dehydrated. Other symptoms can be dry skin, fatigue, irritability, headache, poorer co-ordination and reaction time, and reduced concentration . It can progress to feelings of light headedness and even dizziness if our blood pressure is affected. Dehydration can also increase the viscosity (stickiness) of our blood requiring our heart to work harder, and evidence suggests that dehydration contributes towards heart attacks and strokes. Businesses are realising just how chronic dehydration can impact upon the productivity of their workforce. This can be a problem in heated and air-conditioned offices. for staff are now widespread. We are so fortunate in the UK that we have high quality tap water for drinking. Despite this, drinking enough water does not come easy for some people . To make it more interesting, add a squeeze of natural fruit juice (or low-sugar cordial), or even whole fruit and herbs. You get an extra shot of vitamins too. The combinations are endless. Why not try lemon and ginger or watermelon and kiwi? There are some great infusion water bottles to choose from but look out for those that are BPA-free, durable and with a good grip. You want your bottle to last and last! For those of you that prefer your water more au naturel, then there is again a huge array of reusable water bottles to keep your water perfectly chilled and stylish! These are a brilliant investment but please do try and go with an eco-friendly brand. These tick the boxes for both health and reducing plastic waste. However, they are only fully effective when individuals have good access to water to refill them. Look out for the ReFill labels dotted around. Research by Natural Source Waters would suggest that individuals will either choose to buy a soft drink (even knowing it is less healthy), or will go without a needed drink all together, if there is no bottled water available to purchase. They would do this rather than trying to find a water fountain or refill station. As the healthiest choice when it comes to staying hydrated, water should always be available to purchase next to other soft

drinks on the shelf and in the chiller. This is especially pertinent at a time when obesity levels and tooth decay are on the rise and we really need to be encouraging less consumption of soft drinks, especially amongst children. If you have time, and you prefer hot drinks, then make yourself a decaeinated herbal tea instead (many of which have other health benefits too). Perhaps a cup of hot water with fresh lemon and ginger tickles your taste buds? Although decaffeinated drinks are best, drinks containing caffeine do still add to your overall water intake. Caffeine does have a mild diuretic effect, meaning it will cause you to urinate and thus lose hydration. However, if you limit the amount of caffeine you drink, then it won’t cause fluid loss in excess of the volume ingested. Be careful with such beverages as they often come with added sugar and milk!

As a Personal Fitness Trainer, with my company LiveFIT Wales Cymru, I work in the community, for the community, and with the community on their health and fitness. Life is short. Without moving our bodies and eating healthily, it’s shorter still. I’m also the health and fitness expert for S4C’s FFIT Cymru and QVC, the UK’s largest shopping and lifestyle network.
What does a holiday look like to you? Two weeks horizontal sun worship? Action-packed walking, kayaking, and activities galore? Camping and diving into local vinyards, cheese shops and bakeries? However it looks, I’m always asked by my clients how they can keep their fitness up and not lose sight of their health goals while they take that wellearned break. If you’re planning or, indeed, have already planned your get-away, this is how you can enjoy it but still stay focused. MOVE Plan some form of physical movement each day. Ideally you want to try and walk, and a quite brisk one at that, for around 20 min. Check out the Talk Test. This is a way of measuring the intensity of your exercise. You want to try and get your heart rate up, and be a little out of breath so that you’re still able to hold a breathy conversation, but not a full normal chat.

DIVE IN If you’re lucky enough to have a pool at your holiday resort, get in it! I’m not a good swimmer. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that, even as a fitness and health professional, I hate it! But, I will force myself to do 10 lengths of the pool per day when I’m away. If you love a swim, or just love to be in the water, you can burn calories and have a few laughs, playing and splashing around with your kids, family or friends. Low impact, heart rate rising, with a little bit of resistance training too, in warmer climes it really is a no brainer. CYCLE Hire a bike. Cycling around beauty spots near to where you’re staying gives you an amazing chance to really take in the local area. You can stop, park up easily, have a nose around, shop, eat, visit areas of interest, all while getting a bit of cardio, fresh air and physical movement.
LIFT A lot of resorts have their own gyms. Some will be more well-equipped than others and I’ve found I’m normally the only one in there! If you’re not used to lifting weights or using a gym, I wouldn’t recommend starting while you’re away. But, if you know your way around a gym, then the internet is your friend. You can find thousands of free workouts by fully qualified fitness professionals on sites such as YouTube and Vimeo. My go-to is the free LIIFT4 sample workout on Vimeo, with some weight lifting and HIIT thrown in. Perfect, succinct workout done and dusted with warm up and cool down included, all in 30 minutes. Tadah!

this means the calories you burn while moving your body through activities that are not exercise specific. So, take the stairs instead of the lift, walk, play with the kids, clean the apartment/caravan/tent, and dance.
NEAT And if you can’t do any of the above or, as far as you’re concerned, you’re on holiday and so exercise can wait, let’s look at your NEAT opportunities—or Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. Essentially
By moving and staying active when away this year, you can keep your health and fitness goals in sight. Although you may go off track a wee bit, it’ll be much easier to jump back in when you return. Plus, not only is staying active good for your body, the benefits to your mental and emotional health are endless! So, instead of staying on a sun lounger, think about making a few of the changes listed here. Relish in the positive vibes and outcomes, and you’ll wonder why you hadn’t done it before! Travel safe, and travel well.

A little snippet from Stifyn’s book— “Out with It!” I still can’t believe that at Catherine Zeta and Michael Douglas’ wedding, I shared the red carpet that lined the bottom of Central Park with the likes of Goldie Hawn, Kirk Douglas, Danny DeVito, half of Swansea, and bloody Superman! I have never seen such a bank of world press in my entire career. Literally hundreds of cameras, with lenses that would shoot the moon, and journalists crawling over each other like ants. It was the most glorious event ever, and every detail was perfect, truly magical, and very intimate. My favourite moment was very late in the evening, when I found myself standing around a white grand piano with Mick Hucknall, Art Garfunkel and Gladys Knight, listening to Catherine singing the Welsh song ‘Calon Lân’. It doesn’t get much better than that.

LOCAL FEEL, GLOBAL OUTLOOK We had a chance to ask Dr Gerard Griffiths, Principal of Westbourne School, how a global approach to education can make a huge difference in children’s education and development. Although situated in the heart of Penarth, it’s clear to see how Westbourne School celebrates its own international culture, and harnesses it to support students’ education. Could you give our readers an overview of the International Baccalaureate Diploma at Westbourne?
Could you tell us a little bit about how Westbourne uses educational programmes for a global audience? I know it is the expectation of all schools to encourage their students to be global citizens, but at Westbourne we allow our children to live this experience on a daily basis. We have about 25% international students from all over the world studying alongside students from throughout Penarth, Cardiff and the wider Vale. We draw on all their experiences at every opportunity to enhance the education of all our school community, as well as creating many international links across the globe. This also promotes a culture of inclusion, so our students feel comfortable in sharing ideas and stories from their own part of the world. 40
The IB Diploma programme is an academically demanding international curriculum that is specifically designed to develop the key skills required for university and the workplace. Critical thinking skills, leadership development and the discipline to write research essays is taught alongside six subject choices, developing subject breadth and depth. Offering students independent learning in a global context and an experience that will stay with them forever, the Diploma is highly regarded by top universities across the globe.
Could you tell us some recent success stories from some of your students who have completed your full IB Diploma programme? There are numerous examples of initially shrinking violets who grow in both resilience and confidence to become head boys/girls, of students who excel in areas they did not think possible, and those who take an alternative route to incredible success. Our head boy last year arrived from Tirana, Albania.
www.penarthview.co.uk
Two years ago, English was his second language and his ambition was to study Medicine in the UK. A compulsory aspect of the IB is to learn a secondary language, and he chose French. He excelled so much he was torn between Medicine and Modern Languages. Instead, he decided to apply to Montpellier University to study Medicine through French.
Having 90% of your IB students graduate to Russell Group universities must be a huge achievement. What goes into achieving a stamp of approval like this? The IB Diploma itself allows our students to present themselves at interview with incredible confidence, because they can talk of what they have done not only what they would like to do. Our head boy two years ago spent his summer between lower and upper sixth at a university in Germany studying an aspect of Physics he was keen to investigate. On his own fruition he applied to a professor at the University of Cologne to spend his summer in his department - the professor was so impressed by his letter that he was invited to spend three months with him. He returned to school having not only researched with a PhD group, he also learnt German too. Experiences like this are common practice - and shows why admissions departments are keen to listen to IB students.
What would you say to parents and students who are thinking about the IB programme?Â
Finally, congratulations for achieving #1 rankings in the UK School league tables for the past five years. What do you think makes Westbourne stand out from other schools? A clear and simple ethos, an exceptional sense of school community and a committed long term plan.
Applications are currently open for September 2020 entry into Nursery, Prep, Senior School and Sixth Form. Personal tours and taster days are welcomed all year round.

If families are keen for their sons and daughters to be challenged in a climate of global citizens, developing an advanced skill-set as well as incredible resilience, then I would encourage them to explore the IB Diploma fully.

DE-CLUTTER FAST WITH MASONS Daffodils are just starting to poke their heads up, which can only mean one thing: spring is on its way! And one of our favourite things about spring is the chance to freshen up our homes.
F A
S
W
e can’t be alone in our spring-cleaning delight, since decluttering expert Marie Kondo’s bestseller
The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up shot her to fame. Plus, online, there has been the rise of clean-fluencers such as Mrs Hinch, who currently has over 3 million Instagram followers. Mrs Hinch and her followers, aka #HinchArmy, are all about keeping our homes organised and squeaky clean. So, it looks like we’re all looking for a bit of order at home! Looking for some inspiration for where to start with our own decluttering here at Penarth View HQ, we turned to our friends at Masons Self Storage. The team at Masons are frequently used by their customers for home improvement projects and decluttering. Self storage is the perfect stopgap for any home projects that need a bit of space. We asked the team at Masons what they had learnt from their customers' experiences over the years. They shared with us possibly the best decluttering advice, and it even has its own acronym: F.A.S.T!
42
T
Fix a time in which you’re going to tackle the clutter, and stick to it. Anything not used in 12 months has to go. We have to be honest with ourselves, those trousers that we’ve had for years— hoping that one day they’d fit again—it’s time for them to find a new home. Someone else’s stuff. Masons told us this was one of the big reasons some of their customers take out selfstorage. Often their children are away at university or travelling, and they’d like to use their old bedroom but don’t want to throw away their possessions. Trash. After sorting through your belongings, you may have two piles. One for the bin (or to donate) and another of things that you don’t need in your home but you’re not ready to part with.

CKAGING SUPPLIES*
The latter is where lots of customers turn to Masons. With flexible contracts starting from just £5 a week and a state-of-the-art facility that’s accessible 24/7, they’re the perfect solution by helping you declutter at home whilst not having to completely part with those items you’re unsure about! To make storing with Masons even easier, their sturdy range of professional packaging supplies such as moving boxes and bubble wrap can be delivered direct to your home. It’s important that your items are packaged in high quality boxes to keep them protected in storage. If you’re not sure whether you’re really utilising your belongings, try the cardboard box test? Fill a strong cardboard box with the contents of a drawer or cupboard. Every time you need an item, take it out and put it back in its original home. Everything left in the box at the end of the month probably isn’t needed and can be donated, recycled or put in the bin.
If you have a lot of documents or archives at home that you’ve been storing because you’re unsure of how to confidentially dispose of them, Masons are also the Cardiff franchise of Simply Shredding. Offering a door-to-door confidential shredding service, they will provide you with a certificate for peace of mind that your documents have been securely shredded and recycled.
After that fantastic decluttering advice, we’re feeling ready to tackle our clutter here at Penarth View HQ! If you’ve been thinking about taking on a home renovations project or are desperate to clear the clutter, why not see how Masons Self Storage could help? They’re a family business and with 115 years of experience in the removals and storage industry, you could say they really know their stuff!
The Storage Centre, Priority Enterprise Park, Cardiff Road CF63 2BG *Terms and conditions apply. 25% discount relates to the £30.00 packaging supplies bundle: 5 medium boxes, 5 large boxes, 1 bubble wrap and 1 tape. Contact a team member for more information.

GOING THROUGH THE MENOPAUSE? Influencer

Penarth-based Nutritional Therapist
Being diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder led me to discover the Hilary Newman Clinic, where I embraced the power of natural remedies. Within months, I no longer needed medication to manage my illness. I was inspired by this treatment and retrained as an Allergy and Nutritional Therapist. I now have a clinic in the heart of Penarth where I offer bespoke treatment to patients for a variety of illnesses.
T
he Menopause has recently been a hot topic in the media, but what exactly is this condition and is there anything we can do about it? It is accepted that the average age of the Menopause is 51 years, it can start as early as 40 years and as late as 55 years. The menopause occurs when there are no eggs left in the ovaries. This results in reduced levels of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone being produced. The work of producing the needed oestrogen
44
is now transferred to the Adrenal Glands. Now that the ovaries are not producing the required oestrogen, the Adrenals take over the production. This is only effective if the Adrenal Glands are able to cope with this added pressure. The adrenals help us cope with life’s stresses. So, when they struggle, we struggle. If we’re of that age, then we suffer with the menopausal symptoms.
www.penarthview.co.uk
ARE YOU IN THE MIDST OF THE MENOPAUSE? Are you experiencing hot flashes, headaches, atrophic vaginitis, cold hands/feet, forgetfulness, inability to concentrate, urinary tract infections? Whilst they may indicate the menopause, there’s no need to succumb to mother nature, there are many natural ways to reduce these symptoms:
DIET The most important aspect here is to eat a predominantly plant based diet and to reduce animal foods. Plant based foods are high in phytoestrogen (which mimics the effects of oestrogen in the body). Foods high in phytoestrogen include soya beans, soy produce, flaxseeds, apples, carrots, fennel, celery, parsley, legumes. Also include foods high in Calcium and Vitamin D such as kale, sardines, beans, tofu, collard greens, oily fish and eggs, as well as plenty of exposure to the sun (a minimum of 30 minutes per day). Avoiding any trigger foods will also help, such as sugar, spicy foods, caffeine and alcohol. Of course, these can vary from person to person. Are you drinking enough water? Drinking throughout the day is far more beneficial than drinking ‘all in one go’! REMEDIES You may find that Macca, Red Clover, St John’s Wart, Dong Quai and Black Cohosh are beneficial in reducing symptoms. However, these should be administered by a professional of course. EXCERCISE Take part in
regular, moderate exercise.
Whether you’re suffering with menopausal or peri-menopausal symptoms, or are keen to prevent the symptoms, a natural remedy isn’t far away!

here’s no stopping Matt and Charlotte, the duo behind Willmore’s 1938. In 2019, they supported numerous charities, and 2020 looks to be no different. Matt (pictured above right with David Stealey from Romilly Financial) will be taking on the Carten 100, alongside rugby legends Mike Phillips and Shane Williams. One hundred miles, from Cardiff to Tenby, on a bike, in one day. Donations are requested for charity at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ Matt-Holland13. Every single penny will go to Velindre Cancer Centre who provide vital treatment, care and support to cancer patients in Wales. Charlotte (inset) will also be taking part again this year in Walk the Walk’s midnight marathon—twice! Once in London and once in Edinburgh. They are the largest grant making breast cancer charity in the UK. You’ll see them both training around Penarth, so make sure you give them a wave and a couple of quid!

1 tsp dried thyme 1 tsp dried rosemary ½ tsp dried basil Dash pepper 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 plum tomatoes, thinly sliced
In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Add 1 tablespoon oil, salt, sugar, garlic powder, herbs, pepper and 1 cup of the flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft, sticky dough. Turn onto a floured surface, knead until smooth and elastic for about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled for about 1 hour. Punch dough down. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Shape into a 13 x 9 inch rectangle and place on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise until doubled for about 30 minutes. With fingertips, make several dimples over top of dough. Brush dough with the remaining oil and arrange tomatoes over the top. Bake at 400° for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove to a wire rack to cool down.

EAST MEETS WEST, INTERIORS STYLE! Influencer
Hayley Perkins
Jewels Canley Interiors
I was schooled in Fashion Design before switching to Interior Design. I have a unique talent for sussing out a client’s taste within just minutes, and I’m always bubbling with ideas to transform any space, from residential homes to hotels. Not so secret fact: I’m crazy about dogs!
East meets west. I’m not talking about Kim Jong-un and Trump here. No, no, no! This is a far more attractive relationship. The marriage of east and west is a beautiful one: the harmony of cultures complemening each other by including dark and light woods on a contrast of pale base colours with added rich colour accents.

Lamps
Starting with some smaller items— lamps! Who doesn’t love a good lamp? Anyone? No? Didn’t think so. Lamps are accessible, can be affordable, and they add instant glamour or a change of theme to any room. As we are on the topic of east meets west, when it comes to decorative lamps then the east has this hands down. There are oriental blue and white porcelain jam-jar lamp styles that you will notice trickling through your interior magazines at the moment. These have been updated with accents of brightlycoloured shades. A lovely, bright red or magenta pink is a beautiful combo.

Hard Flooring
Always a good idea, especially for busy households, whether you have kids or animals—you can normally just sweep away crumbs and animal hair. This is obviously a huge plus! Hard floors are popular the world over, so here we have similarities across the cultures for this base material. It’s attractive, practical and easy to clean. Check out pale oaks for your softer looks, or if you are feeling a little more daring, try darker walnut. Western styles have gone in the direction of herringbone—which is classic in style and joins nicely with decorative pieces. Mixing different patterns and textures, and working with three colours will achieve more of a westernised appearance. This can be more of a blended look than its eastern counterpart, which is lighter in colour and uses less texture.
Jewels Canley Interiors has been an established company since 1983. Now a mother and daughter business, the brand of Jewels has developed, originally from curtain-making and upholstery, to now expanding in more recent years to develop the interior design avenue. Julie and Hayley work well to create contemporary living with a nod to classic styles in the accents of furniture and accessories.

Crittall Doors
You might have noticed the major trend of Crittall, or steel-framed, doors, which has made a huge impact on the interior scene. These black frames with glass panes add a tremendous amount of ultra-cool, modern sophistication to any home. They are perfect for either small or large homes, to either separate rooms or to use as a screen. It’s the perfect blend of eastern room dividers with a western steel material.

FOR BEAUTIFUL WOOD, SINCE 1896
Originally manufacturing paints and distempers to the joinery and building market, founder Alfred Fiddes moved from Bristol to Cardiff in 1896 to set up a small manufacturing workshop on Trade Street, where he continued to develop and manufacture wood finishes over the next 30 years. His son-in-law Robert joined the business following the Second World War, and, seizing a new opportunity, developed their portfolio with a wider range of specialist wood finishes. By the early 1950s, Fiddes had become a recognised supplier within the UK’s professional furniture and antique restoration market, providing a complete range of wax polishes, lacquers, shellacs and wood dyes. By the early 1970s, third-generation Ian Fiddes was instrumental in firmly establishing the Fiddes brand in the trade and retail markets, which he achieved with the support of his wife, Elizabeth, and a dedicated team, some of whom remain with the company to this day. 1987 saw Rob Fiddes join amidst a rapid expansion for the company. But tragedy was to strike a decade later when a fire destroyed over 70% of the premises. Rob steered the company through a tumultuous two-year period

of reconstruction, including the development of their new premises on Brindley Road. Over the following twenty years, new markets and products have been developed, including a durable, quick-drying Hard Wax Oil, and a new range of glass coatings for the food and drink, and decorative industries. Fiddes are proud of their family heritage and retain a progressive outlook, ensuring a continued policy for investment in manufacturing and technology. Fiddes offer advice and a comprehensive range of wood finishes and accessories for furniture, floors, and interior and exterior wood surfaces at their new showroom off Penarth Road.

Community A memorial to fallen soldiers in memory Royal Marine Commando Paul Woodland has been unveiled after long campaign. Paul’s partner, Sian Woodland, raised £17,500 to pay for the memorial. She said: “The memorial is dedicated to those from the Vale of Glamorgan who lost their lives whilst serving with the Armed Forces. Because Paul was not killed in a war situation, we couldn’t have his name on the cenotaph. We wanted his friends and family to have somewhere public they could go to remember him and all the fallen of the Vale.” The memorial was erected late last year, and officially opened on 3 March 2020, with a short service and refreshments at Willmore’s 1938. RNLI Update Thankfully daylight hours are increasing as we shake off the winter blues and look forward to spring and summer at the station. Whilst for many it has been a time for relaxation and hibernation, it’s not quite like that for the volunteers at the station. On average, the number of calls is reduced in winter, but we know that the Bristol Channel remains a dangerous place throughout the year. Water temperatures are low, and coupled with high tides and winter gales, this can present hazards to the unwary, either at sea or on the coast. There is still plenty of sailing going on, and winter cod fishing too, from boat and shore. Should our volunteers’ pagers activate, we know we’ll have to react quickly, especially if we are to save people in the water. At the time of writing we’ve had three shouts in 2020. A fishing vessel tow, a yacht rescue in difficult conditions, and a call at which we were thankfully stood-down before we launched. Our volunteers continue to train weekly, and there are great opportunities to take the boats out on exercise. Training in rough weather is an ideal opportunity to prepare for shouts by improving navigation and boat handling skills in challenging conditions. We’ve continued to maintain the boats and equipment, ensuring everything is in tip-top condition and making sure we have lots of warm winter woollies, gloves and balaclavas to hand! Not to mention hot drinks and chocolate when the boats get back to the boathouse. Many of the crew have been undertaking formal assessments in order to progress training or maintain competence, and we’ve been assessing potential new volunteer crew members. So as we move from one season to another we’re prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. 73
Bad
Spring has sprung and is anyone still begrudgingly clinging to their New Year resolutions? This is the season of reflection and preparation, so take this time to ruminate and reevaluate, looking at those little habits that may be doing more harm than good. Habits
MEDIA Exposing yourself to negative media can be detrimental to your mental health. Instead, do something productive or something that makes you happy. You wouldn’t surround yourself with people who make you feel bad about yourself, so why read something that does just that?

ROAD RAGE We all get frustrated by bad drivers but what does screaming at some stranger behind your shield of glass and metal actually achieve? All you’re doing is making yourself miserable and putting unnecessary stress on your heart.
www.penarthview.co.uk
SMILING Smiling reduces stress, lowers heart rate and is linked to lower blood pressure. Unfortunately you can’t smile your way out of every problem. But try smiling in the mirror or at a stranger, you’ll be surprised by the difference in your mood.
GOOD POSTURE Aside from the physical advantages, allowing your organs and nervous system to work efficiently, there are psychological benefits. Studies show that walking in a slouched position can increase feelings of depression. Slouching also affects how people see you, perceiving you as sluggish or lazy.
REHASHING Rehashing past events, whether five years or five minutes ago, isn’t good for your wellbeing. It’s easier said than done, to not rehash old memories. But how much time do you waste thinking about the past? Focus on planning your future or, even better, look around and enjoy the moment.
DECLUTTERING Whether at home, in the car or at their desk, people avoid decluttering. I can understand why, but aside from the physical aspects, useless clutter can make you feel weighed down and mentally blocked, making it harder to be productive in your day to day life.

SAYING ‘NO’ There is nothing wrong with helping the people you care about, but when you start feeling bad when you do have to say “no”, that’s when things need to change. Don’t stop helping people altogether, just be more selective with your own time.

MEET THE MAKER Here to shine a light on the home-based ventures in Penarth, this issue we speak to Emily Van Keogh from Boo Brolly. Hi Emily! What inspires you? I love design, so I relish spending time browsing Instagram. I also take inspiration from what I see around me, especially here in beautiful Penarth.
together and running the business here in Penarth. I wanted to do something different with a more local, personal focus, so I set up Boo Brolly last year to bring some new umbrella innovations.
Why do customers come to you?
How influential is social media for you?
On a rainy day (and we get many of those in Wales), what can be more uplifting than a bright, colour-popping umbrella? Most umbrellas out there are dull and dreary, but Boo Brolly definitely bucks that trend. People love our unique colour changing canopies too. As the rain falls, the umbrella changes colour, and the design comes to life! We use fibreglass in our designs, so our umbrellas honestly do last! No more bent and mangled ribs.
What is the biggest challenges you face? How do you overcome them? I have many years of experience in the field of umbrellas, so I am very confident in umbrellas themselves. That side of the product is easy for me. Getting designs right, I guess, can be the hardest part—it’s also the most fun! It is essential to select the right design to ensure that it has wide appeal and that people want to own one of our umbrellas!
How did you come across this craft?
My husband, Dan, set up Brollies & Parasols ten years ago, to produce umbrellas and parasols to the hospitality industry, for clients like The Dorchester, Jamie Oliver restaurants, Heineken, Fever Tree and Waldorf Astoria Hotels. After having my daughter, I decided to focus on the business to help it grow and strengthen, resulting us working

Absolutely integral for small businesses in this day and age. It has been a brilliant tool for me to build up my audience and get exposure for my brand and products. I also use it to get feedback on potential new designs. It can really help me decide what will catch people’s eye and essentially what will sell.
Do you have any favourite projects? I am currently working on a range of colour-changing umbrellas for children! The designs are fun, and you can go a little wild with colours. Kids have naturally gravitated to the colour changing concept—it really captures their attention.
Do you stay with trends, or create your own path? A bit of both I guess! I use what is out there, and what is trending and popular as my starting point. However, colours, adaptations and re-visualising is so essential. Creating something unique is my driving force! Fint out more about Boo Brolly on their Facebook page.

THE CASE FOR A BUSINESS CASE Small businesses are the lifeblood of the economy, and Wales is leading the charge with a business birthrate higher than the UK national average. So when better than springtime, the time of new beginnings, to sow the seed of that idea you’ve always wanted to bring to life, or to nurture the growth of your existing venture? Whether you are looking to start, develop or even buy a business, you’ll probably need funding, which means you’ll have given some thought to the financials. But here’s the big secret to securing finance—it’s not just about the numbers! That might be a surprising thing for a firm of Chartered Management Accountants to say, but whilst no bank or investor is going to support you without a robust forecast, having a sound business plan is equally important. Banks back ventures when they feel confident in the proposition, and the business plan is what sells the story of where you are, where you are going and how you are going to get there. Here are a few top tips to make a compelling case:
Be persuasive. The executive summary needs to capture investors’ imagination in less than a page, so choose your introductory words wisely. Be concise. No investor wants to wade through War & Peace to understand the opportunity. Be realistic and honest. Make sure you consider all the weaknesses and the challenges, as well as the strengths and opportunities. Be conservative. It’s better to under-promise and over-deliver than over-promise and under-deliver. Start lower with your sales figures and higher with your costs to see if it all still stacks up, and add a few months on to your expected start up timeline. Be creative. Include a visual element such as graphs, charts and images to bring your concept to life. Be factual. Avoid fluffy empty words like amazing or outstanding, and don’t make empty promises. Instead, support your plan with statistics and sources. Be knowledgeable. Show you’ve done your homework by including your market research and naming your competitors, making sure you highlight what sets you apart from them. And finally, after you successfully secure funding, don’t just file away your plan and forget it. It’s your roadmap to drive your business in the right direction, so make time to re-read and revise it on a regular basis. VE DAY— 75 YEARS ON
© IWM (H 41849) © IWM (EA 65948)
“My dear friends, this is your hour.”
W
—Sir Winston Churchill
hen VE Day dawns on 8 May 2020, it will be 75 years since the guns fell silent, marking peace throughout Europe. Years of bloodshed and destruction had come to an end, and millions of people flocked to the streets and pubs to celebrate, mourn their loves ones, and toast to the hope of a harmonious future. Upon the defeat of Germany, celebrations erupted throughout the western world. An estimated 50,000 people were crowded around Piccadilly Circus by midnight, relieved that the intense strain of total war was finally over. Across Europe, people marked the victory with street parties, dancing and drinking. It was, however, a day of mixed emotions. Amidst the street parties and rejoicing, many people mourned the death of friends and relatives, or worried for those still serving overseas. For many, it was difficult to join in with the celebrations, still living amongst the wake of terror and what the war had stolen from them.
Words by Katherine Peach, Penarth View Sales Associate 80
This was not the end of suffering for the people of Europe, they now had a new battle to face—the seemingly impossible task of piecing their lives back together, and look towards an attempt to restore their once beloved world. Knowing to never forget but to move forward, remembering the past in order to build a better future. We also must not forget those who continued to fight for peace until 15 August, when it was announced that Japan had surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, effectively ending World War II. Churchill told the British people: “We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing (as Japan) remains unsubdued.” The 75th Anniversary will provide our nation, and our friends around the world, an opportunity to reflect on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of people from all walks of life who saw us through this dark and terrifying period. To commemorate, Penarth Town Council will be hosting an array of events, including meeting the Pride of Bristol at Penarth Pier. People will have the chance to explore the ship and learn about life at sea over the years. There will also be a civic reception at West House. This will be an opportunity for us all to remember the enormous sacrifices that were made at home and abroad, and to joyously celebrate, as people did 75 years ago at the arrival of peace in Europe.
