CROESO—WELCOME SHWMAE Determination has been an underlying force behind Penarth View from day one, and I’ve loved being Co-editor for the last three years. Like many, Coronavirus and lockdown measures have shifted the way I think, adapt, and ultimately decide how to go forward. For me, that means handing over the editorial reigns to the very capable hands of John and our wonderful team. As a team, we’ve always wanted Penarth View to be a vehicle for good in our community, promoting the views of kindness, compassion, and understanding. We’re living in a technological age of conversation and we’ve never been more connected to one another, but of course, that doesn’t mean it’s all good! Faster communication also uncovers how fast we make judgements, form views, and ultimately affect the lives of others around us, not to mention the environment we live in. I believe we’re beginning to see conversations and points of view from people outside of our echo chambers, be that white privilege, social class, or more general societal views. That can only be a good thing. I’ve loved working with John and creating Penarth View, meeting many wonderful business owners, contributors, creatives, and people with so much passion and tenacity it’s infectious! I’ve especially loved creating this edition, which I’m proud to say promotes even more diverse views and voices. If the last year has taught us anything, it’s to appreciate the good times and rally together in the bad. Let’s look out for those around us, especially this Christmas. Remember to support local, look after the environment we rely on, and open yourself up to the views of those around you—even if you don’t always agree! —Will 4
For me, this issue is a mix of emotions. It has been great to be back doing what I love, and that is to edit and publish Penarth View—I really have missed not doing that over the past few months. Seeing the issue come together with Will, Katherine, and our wider team of creatives has been inspirational. Of course, we couldn’t do that without our advertisers and sponsors, and it is truly humbling that they continue to put their trust in us, even during a worldwide pandemic. Diolch. Signing off on this issue is also tinged with sadness, given that it is the last issue Will and I will edit together. That isn’t to say that you won’t hear or see of Will again, of course. 2021 is sure to be a very exciting year as we look to grow and expand the publication. We’re working up some very exciting plans, and I can’t wait to share them with you. I know we’re all looking forward to 2021, to an end to the pandemic, to a brighter time where we can all be together again. We must take with us, however, the lessons that have come from the pandemic—people want to spend more time with friends and family, spend less time commuting, support their local high street, rather than out of town boxes. Penarth View will continue to promote and support those ideals. Whatever shape the coming months take, take the time to talk to friends and family. Reach out to those who may be alone and isolated, because a warm word and a kind gesture can mean the world. “Daw eto haul ar fryn”—loosely the sun will rise again—is a Welsh proverb giving hope. We can take comfort in the fact that, as the sun does rise every day, 2021 will bring those brighter days. —John

WILLMORE’S STAYS STRONG Over the past six months, Matt and Charlotte have shown incredible resilience through the pandemic. There’s no end to their ingenuity, and they’ll always be there to serve their delicious home-cooked food, cakes and coffee—and we’re completely there for it.

Through the first lockdown, they adjusted very quickly to what was to become our new normal. All non-essential shops were closed. Cafés, bars and restaurants were asked to close, resulting in their entire customer base being removed overnight. Adjusting to lockdown measures, the Willmore’s 1938 team began offering delivery of their food and coffee straight to people’s doors. Over the summer, as restrictions were slowly lifted across Wales, they branched out, holding theme nights at Penarth Athletic Club, including a Burger Night, a Pie & Mash Night and a Bratwurst Night. The nights proved to be incredibly popular, and would usually sell out within days. Recognising that working together builds a stronger business community, the latest partnership for Willmore’s is one with fellow Stanwell Road retailer A. B. Snell & Son. Willmore’s 1938’s homemade food is now also available to be delivered via Snell’s brand new grocery delivery website. We’re massive fans of this kind of collaboration, and we’d love to see more of it. This is one way of taking on the big boys of retail, and without question, the

quality will be so much better. Some of the Willmore’s 1938 treats now available to order either whole or by the portion include lasagne, quiche, corned beef pie, and their famous Scotch eggs—they’re huge! Go to www. snellspenarth.com to place your order. Willmore’s have also taken on a new chef, Damian Jones, and some of you may recognise him from Bar 44. Damian joining the team means that Matt and Charlotte can both spend more time doing what they love most: being on the café floor, greeting customers and making sure everyone has a good time at Willmore’s 1938, when they are able to welcome guests in through the doors. Without the support of their customers, however, Willmore’s 1938 wouldn’t be. So Matt and Charlotte would like to thank all their customers for their continued support.

TURNER HOUSE TO OPEN ITS DOORS
Credit: John & Jane
Could you tell us a bit more about the history of the building?
We are delighted to announce the reopening of the Turner House Gallery in January 2021, subject to Coronavirus regulations. The venue, now in the hands of Penarth Town Council, has been close to Penarth people’s hearts since its opening in 1888. With some fantastic upcoming exhibitions planned, The Turner House is likely to become one of the top cultural destinations in the Vale. Penarth View wanted to find out what to expect, so we spoke to Lewis Prosser at Penarth Town Council for more information.
20
The Turner House was first opened in 1888 to exhibit the personal collection of local flour merchant, James Pyke-Thompson. The collection contained artworks by artists including Rembrandt, Rossetti and, of course, J. M. W. Turner. Pyke-Thompson wanted his art collection to inspire, entertain and encourage creativity in the local community. He believed that seeing art improved mental and spiritual health. He made sure everyone could visit the gallery by opening on Sundays when many were not working and only churches were open. After Pyke-Thompson’s death the building was gifted to Amgueddfa Cymru who have been trustees for the building ever since. Many will also recall Ffotogallery, who took up residence in 2003 as the Welsh centre for photography until their departure in 2016. We have had real fun curating a permanent display which showcases a detailed history of the building for anyone wanting to learn more. We are very grateful to Amgueddfa Cymru for their partnership in reopening The Turner House.
www.penarthview.co.uk
Have you made any changes to the building itself?
How will Penarth Town Council continue the legacy of The Turner House?
We know that Pyke-Thompson wanted the building to be a forwardthinking gallery for the enjoyment of everyone. He was especially keen for the building to become an educational space where young people in the Vale could be inspired by great artists. We have used this original vision to create a gallery which is both inspirational and accessible for all. Exhibitions will be free, with a changing programme that showcases the best national touring shows alongside local artists and makers. We are also developing a series of workshops to teach traditional skills to a new generation of artists and craftspeople. We will even be open on a Sunday!
Tell us a bit about the new look for The Turner House.
We knew that we wanted the identity to be inspired by the architecture of the building. To achieve this, we worked with the design agency John & Jane, who are based between Penarth and Barry. Sarah and Gareth, who founded the agency, knew instantly what we were trying to achieve and presented a fresh, contemporary brand inspired by the iconic pink facade. It was such a pleasure working with them on this, the time and care they took to research and design was outstanding.
As The Turner House is a listed building, we are keeping the interior mostly as it was, with the addition of a new accessible WC on the ground floor and a small kitchen area upstairs. The roof has been repaired and everything has had a lick of paint. We have tried to make the space more inviting by commissioning Vision-21 to make some bespoke gallery furniture. Vision-21 are a social enterprise that provide hands on training for people with learning disabilities and are using all reclaimed and natural materials to make a tactile and engaging space.
What exhibitions do you have lined up for 2021?
The opening show is a new Hayward Gallery touring exhibition of screen-prints by Eduardo Paolozzi opening on the 24th of Jan 2021*. Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924–2005) was one of the pioneers of the pop art movement in the UK. His vibrant prints and collages highlight the importance of visual culture for all. Later in 2021, we have exhibitions of work by Henri Matisse, Quentin Blake, and Melin Tregwynt. We are particularly excited about the Penarth Open Exhibition, which will provide a chance for local artists of all ages to exhibit their own work. Details on how to submit your artworks will be announced later this year.
The Turner House reopens to the public on 24 January 2021*. For updates about upcoming shows or to enquire about the Penarth Open Show, follow @tyturnerpenarth on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. *Subject to Coronavirus regulations

DON’T BURN OUT. OK?
Words by Katherine Peach, Penarth View Sales Associate
What does it mean to be productive? Is it a hectic day at work, or maybe it’s charging around town doing errands? What makes you go to bed at the end of the day feeling like you’ve been productive? I bet none of those things included self-care. Checking in with yourself, making sure you drank enough water, or making the time to do a face mask. Let me guess? You stay up past midnight, squinting your tired eyes at the blue light of your screen. You drank twice the amount of coffee so that you can stay awake. You work through the pounding headache and aching back. Your heart beats in an anxiety riddled chest, as the stress takes a tighter grip on your mind. But at least you were productive, right? This is the problem with society’s idea of living a productive life. We have it drilled into us that if you are not filling your day with tasks, and don’t fall into bed exhausted every night, then it’s wasted. Self-care has fallen to the bottom of everyone’s to-do list.
22
Society is burning itself out daily, sacrificing the bare necessities. Everyone is in constant competition over who’s more stressed, who can get the least amount of sleep. Always ignoring the nagging pleas of our bodies asking us to slow down. It took me a while to see this. I didn’t feel like my day was worth anything unless I was completely fried and could do nothing but fall into bed, catching shreds of broken sleep. But you can only go so long living this way before completely burning out. What we need to realise, is that productivity can be achieved by anyone, if we changed how we define it. Now I’m not suggesting quitting your job, pack up and go backpacking in the jungle forever. You don’t have to make huge changes in your daily routine. But maybe for you it could be meditating, an early night’s sleep, or finding time to have lunch that isn’t a pathetic ham sandwich that you take a bite of between emails. Taking care of yourself is not being lazy. For many people, it’s harder to stop, and start taking care of themselves. Don’t live your life in competition with a faceless idea of productivity and success. Start putting taking care of myself at the top of your to-do list. Be kind to yourself. You deserve it!

As a Personal Fitness Trainer, with my company LiveFIT Wales Cymru, I work in the community, for the community, and with the community on their health and fitness. Life is short. Without moving our bodies and eating healthily, it’s shorter still. I’m also the health and fitness expert for S4C’s FFIT Cymru and QVC, the UK’s largest shopping and lifestyle network. But, winter is about to hit, and nights are getting darker, and good weather is not guaranteed. So, how are you planning on making sure this new and healthy you continues to be just that—especially if we experience another winter lockdown?
Train anywhere
Did you complete that sofa to 5km, follow a fitness expert on YouTube, pay a fortune for athome gym equipment, or join a pre-COVID fitness class through Zoom during lockdown? Looking back at 2020, the weather was good, the nights were light, and you may have escaped joining the average Brit who piled on over 15lbs—brilliant!
24
If you’re a fair weather runner and you still want to get that cardio in, find a low impact HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workout online. The reason I say low impact is that you may want to give your joints a bit of a rest from running while you can. Low impact HIIT based exercise can be done anywhere: a bedroom, kitchen, garage, lounge—wherever. All you need is suitable clothing, a non-slip floor, a pair of trainers, and you’re off! Low impact HIIT workouts burn more calories than a normal cardio session, and the intensity comes from how hard you work, not how hard the impact. If you want to give it a go, LiveFit Wales/Cymru run live online sessions, and you can also find over 2 million videos on YouTube to get you started.

Grab a bargain
Not managed to get your hands on reasonably priced dumbbells or home gym equipment? Keep checking Facebook Marketplace for local sellers. Alternatively, the next time you have a medium sized bottle of water, fill it with sand after drinking it to use as a dumbbell substitute. It’s heavier than a tin of beans, and easier to hold.
Zoom, zoom
Whatever the exercise you have fallen in love with this year, there’s always a way to continue your health and fitness journey, even if we face another lockdown, or the weather become less outdoor-friendly. Most online classes are held through Zoom, so my biggest tip is to download it and get to grips with how to use it.
Night-time running
Being visible as a runner in the dark is essential. Here are my top tips: • Wear bright and reflective clothing. • Wear or carry lights and a mobile phone. • If there’s no pathway, run on the side of the road in the direction of oncoming traffic. • Don’t listen to music. • Run in well lit or populated areas. • Run with a friend and if you can’t, ensure someone at home is able to track your location via GPS. • Pay attention to your surroundings.
A new, state-of-the-art, 24-hour gym opening in 2020! With Anytime Fitness you’re not just joining a gym. You’re joining a supportive, friendly community of like-minded people who are here to give you the encouragement you need. From the welcome when you enter the club, to the support from the personal trainers, the team are professionally trained to help you along your fitness journey, no matter how much support you need. www.anytimefitness.co.uk 029 2009 9247 penarth@anytimefitness.co.uk

FEELING SAD OR HAVING SAD? Words by Rosie Oretti, a Penarthbased science-geek with a background in pharmacology, psychiatry and addictions spanning 30 years.
Many of us feel different in the winter—feeling tired, sleeping a bit more, and gaining some weight. It is a bit like hibernation in animals. However, if your symptoms are bad enough to interfere with your life, you may well have Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD. Put simply, SAD is a type of depressive illness which recurs every autumn or winter and, if left untreated, will remit in spring and summer. Symptoms include: • persistent low mood • lack of interest and enjoyment in life • low energy • being less sociable • being more irritable • less interest in sex • sleeping more • eating more SAD is most common in women of childbearing age. In the UK, this affects about three people in every 100. We do not fully understand what causes SAD, but the reduced amount of light in the winter seems to be important. For mild symptoms, treatment
26
usually includes self-help and lifestyle changes. For more severe symptoms, talking therapies, antidepressant medication and light treatments have some evidence. The choice will often depend on what is available, what is convenient and what you prefer. Avoid vicious circles. If it is dark and you feel tired all the time, you will probably do less. Try to get as much natural sunlight as possible. Take a walk or exercise during daylight hours, this will also help with any weight gain. Remind yourself that days will get longer again in the spring. The feelings of not getting things done can make you feel stressed, so tell your family and friends so that they can understand what is happening and be supportive. A light box can be used to make up for the shortage of daylight in winter. Used for 30-60 minutes each day around breakfast time, but no later than 5pm. If it is going to help, most people will notice some improvement in the first week. Dawn-simulating alarm clocks come on dimly about an hour before waking up time and gradually get brighter, and they are helpful if you find it hard to wake up on winter mornings. Antidepressants may be helpful for some. It is recommended to start them in the autumn and stop them in the spring. There is some evidence for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and this may also prevent recurrence in future winters. Useful resources include: Seasonal Affective Disorders Association (SADA), MoodGym CBT, and Royal College of Psychiatrists’ information on CBT.

Within months, I no longer needed medication to manage my illness. I was inspired by this treatment and retrained as an Allergy and Nutritional Therapist. I now have a clinic in the heart of Penarth where I offer bespoke treatment to patients for a variety of illnesses.

The old ways are the best—is this true? So many people today are taking pharmaceutical medication, and our food, air and soil are polluted with metals, pesticides and other chemicals. Is it time to revisit old remedies and live a more natural life? Here I’ve collated some wonderful and interesting remedies from the past—enjoy! Colds •

Elder was a very common remedy for colds and lung inflammation. Elder blooms in June and July and should be collected on a sunny day and dried in winter. Elder will keep for a year in a jar in a dark room. Peppermint leaves make a lovely tea and should be drunk before bed! Adding honey to the tea is beneficial to a tight chest. To banish head colds, the patient would breathe in the steam from the tea.

Onions and swede would be boiled together for supper to help rid the cold! Onion, eaten raw, was a preventative measure for colds. Leaving a cut onion in a room would keep colds away too!
Camomile tea was excellent for nausea. Often, wormwood and camomile would be boiled together and drunk morning and night to lessen nausea. Ginger was a great remedy for heartburn. It can be used as a powder or freshly grated added to water, milk or buttermilk.

Warts •
•
Cut an apple or potato in half and rub the centre onto the wart, then bury the apple or potato in the ground. The wart will disappear as the apple decays. Make a hole in the centre of a carrot and put salt in the hole. Rub the wart with the liquid produced from this.
Have you come across any weird and wonderful herbal remedies from the past, or ones that were passed down to you from relatives? Do they work? Let me know.
Hiccups
Do you tend to eat too quickly? Trying the following may help! • Drink cold water from the opposite side of the glass (the finger side, not the thumb side) or whilst holding your breath. • Add brandy, whisky or vinegar to a lump of sugar and eat. • Eat dry bread.
Arthritis • • •
Eating citrus fruits such as lemons, grapefruit and oranges helps arthritis. Dandelion tea, wormwood and vinegar were also quite common. Tie rhubarb or cabbage leaves around the painful area!

Up until now 16-year-old Evie Epworth’s life has been nothing special: a patchwork of school, Guides, cows, lost mothers and village fetes. She dreams of a life far away from rural east Yorkshire, but standing in her way is Christine, Evie’s soon-to-be stepmother, a manipulative and moneygrubbing schemer. This is a perfectly pitched coming-of-age fairytale about love, friendship and following your dreams.
From the creative duo behind The Lost Words comes The Lost Spells—a pocket-sized treasure that introduces a beautiful new set of natural spell-poems and stunning artwork. Each “spell” conjures an animal, bird, tree or flower—from Barn Owl to Red Fox, Grey Seal to Silver Birch, Jay to Jackdaw— with which we share our lives and landscapes.
There are laughs at every level in The 130-Storey Treehouse, the tenth book in the number one bestselling Treehouse series. Join millions of readers worldwide in this wacky new adventure—a laughout-loud story told through a combination of text and cartoon-style illustrations in a shiny tenth book special hardback edition! PENARTH’S BYGONE HERITAGE
Penarth’s rich heritage notably began during the 1860s when the industrialisation of South Wales and its coal industry transformed the area, bringing work opportunities and a place to settle just outside of Cardiff. By the end of the 1860s Penarth’s population reached over 3,000, and its newly completed dock yard made South Wales the worlds biggest coal mining exporter of its time.
PenarthView #LovePenarth
Naturally Victorian Penarth thrived and began building for some of the town’s most famous spots that we still love today. The affectionately named Garden By The Sea owes thanks to the numerous parks and buildings that we still have today, and thanks to its conservation area status, we can still enjoy some of the wonderful Victorian and Edwardian architecture today. We take a look at how the parks, open spaces, and buildings we see today have a rich past, and shine a light on some of the town’s hidden gems.

Sadler Bros, later Moorwell Motors
It’s currently being transformed into a high-end gym and apartments, but it was built and opened in the 1920s by brothers Stanley and Aubrey Sadler for their automobile engineering business. Given its Art Deco styling, it’s a striking building which certainly would’ve caught passing drivers’ attention. Originally a single-storey building, a second storey and ramp was added during the Second World War and was used as an auxilliary workshop. Later in the fifties, ownership of the building changed hands, and it became a branch of Moorwell Motors Limited. It was where an R. F. Rosoman Esq. paid £540 for a brand new Sunbeam Imp Sport in polar white. Snazzy! Following a short time standing empty, it will now swap brakes and tyres for running machines and dumbbell weights, as Anytime Fitness Penarth moves in.
Westwood College
In the beginnings, Westwood College was known as Penarth Tutorial College, and was located on Albert Crescent. Outgrowing its buildings, the college relocated a few times to different buildings on Stanwell Road, eventually settling in Westwood House. Closing its doors in 1944, it’s now known as the Penarth Conservative Club and its impressive veranda can still be seen today. The college was also closely located to what is today Westbourne School. Opening in 1895 in Ebenezer House, the school was later renamed as Westbourne House Preparatory School for boys and expanded by purchasing St. Alma’s School for Girls on Victoria Road. The school later moved to the intersection of Stanwell and Hickman Roads, where the school is still based today.

Chain Ferry and Subway
Penarth Post Office
The Post Office in Penarth has had many locations, but its former home on Albert Road has to be one of the most notable. With its Art Deco curved facade, it’s hard not to notice the building when walking through the town. Built in 1936 and designed by A. R. Myers, the building is Grade II listed and still has the yard at the back of the building which the Royal Mail still uses for delivery of mail and parcels. The yard was also used by the horse-drawn carriages that provided bus services from Penarth to Cardiff until the early 1900s. The building is now used as aptly named Deco Café.
Penarth’s Baths on the left. The Esplanade Hotel, now demolished, on the right.
Many people know about Penarth’s subway linking the town to Cardiff under the Ely river, where Cardiff Bay Yacht Club now stands. Closed and bricked up in 1963, the subway still lies underneath the river and was used as an air-raid shelter during WWII. The subway, however, was built to replace the chain ferry that serviced Penarth Dock during the coal mining boom. The transportation of goods from the docks over the Ely to Cardiff Bay could only be used when tides were high and during good weather conditions.
Penarth’s Baths
With their undeniable Jacobean style, the public baths housed two pools: a small pool to the left with a towering entrance, and a large pool to the right. Its octagonal tower and Bath stone facade is one of the most beautiful examples of Victorian architecture in the town and was used as public baths until the 1980s, when Cogan Leisure Centre was opened. Now converted into residential houses, the baths spent some time after their closure as a bar and restaurant, known as In At The Deep End.
PenarthView #LovePenarth
The Esplanade Hotel Penarth
Built in 1877, The Esplanade Hotel was one of the finest examples of Victorian architecture. The hotel has a rich history of welcoming holiday makers to the Esplande when passenger trains were booming. The hotel was also used during WWII as a base for the RAF and after the war by the Barbarians rugby team. Sadly, a fire destroyed the building in 1977, and Alexandra Court apartments now sit in its place.

Jewels Canley Interiors
I was schooled in Fashion Design before switching to Interior Design. I have a unique talent for sussing out a client’s taste within just minutes, and I’m always bubbling with ideas to transform any space, from residential homes to hotels. Not so secret fact: I’m crazy about dogs!
Interiors and heritage have always been a matchmaker. Dating back to the Ancient Egyptian times, the practice of interior design was adopted by those who decorated their native mud homes with basic furnishings, enhanced their surroundings by including animal skins, and even painted biographical murals and urns.
Scandinavian Influence
Oh, how we’ve all gone a little bit crazy for the hard floors and retro classic designed dining chairs! Throw in a shaggy fur throw and voila, you have achieved a beautifully fresh room with some very classic design pieces.
Today, the practice is still seen as an art form. However, the provenance of what we buy also takes inspiration from sustainable practices, fair trade, and responsible supply chains, which are becoming more and more important to us. I’ve collated some new trends that take a look back at how different cultures and their heritage are working their way into our homes. Recently, people with an interest in interior trends have seen how different styles can be mashed up with different cultures—here’s some of my stand out favourites.

With a big surge in patterned fabric, many companies are creating beautiful ikat designs—a design trend which I adore. Although quite a new trend to hit the shelves, these designs have been around since the early 20th century.
Soft furnishings
The wonderful Jane Churchill has created some vibrant new collections, showcasing ethnic influences with a very attractive colour pallet of greens and blues. Also, One of my new favourite designers is the very talented Kate Cullum. Check out www.katecullumtextiles. com for her individual handcrafted cushions. These beauties are striking in design and colour, and are great to snuggle up with on the sofa. I’m loving how these strong Scandinavian and Indonesian designs have weaved their way into some of my current projects. Of course, being Welsh myself I could go on forever talking about our heritage influences and Welsh design classics, but don’t get me onto my room dedicated to love spoons. That was a joke—honest! In 2020, I’m glad to say that we’re all

We’ve been busy making some exciting changes, which we’d love to share with you… With all the challenges that this year has brought us all, we thought now would be a good time to freshen things up, to rethink how we’re going to sell and rent your property in the new normal – whatever that maybe? We’ve rebranded. You might have already noticed our new boards popping up around the town. We hope you like them as much as we do?

We’re also very excited about our new website. We’ve made it quicker and easier for you to find your new home. We’ve also included some helpful tips, guides and information. Plus, a bit about us. How we think differently. And why we are the right estate agent to sell or rent your property. It doesn’t stop there. We’re investing in new software, made changes to our marketing material, added some great photography and use of social media.

GIVE YOUR BUSINESS A BOOST As we navigate the constant changes and uncertainty this year and probably into the early part of next year, flexibility is more important than ever. Many of us have had to adapt to working from home, finding a new rhythm, and discovering the advantages and disadvantages of remote working. There’s a lot to be said for the flexibility of working from home. However, lots of us have found ourselves struggling to focus and missing the boost of working with our team.
As lockdown restrictions constantly adapt, our aim is to help local businesses grow and thrive by providing you the usual professional business support services with simple and flexible contracts allowing you flexibility to adapt. If you’re a small business, charity or organisation thinking about your next steps, then get in touch with the team at The Business Centre (Cardiff) Ltd and we can walk you through how easy we can make it for you.

PENARTH MEANS BUSINESS FiverFest
Over two weeks in October, Penarth’s independent retailers took part in a national Fiver Fest campaign. Each of Penarth’s 47 participating businesses put on special £5 offers over the twoweek celebration highlighting the diversity and value of what the high street has to offer. Fiver Fest has been running successfully in individual towns in the UK and abroad for the past seven years. Totally Locally is now partnering with Visa to encourage consumers to divert £5 of their weekly spend to support the small businesses in their communities. And if every adult in Penarth spent just £5 per week in their local independent shops and businesses it would mean £4.3 million per year going directly into our local economy. This would in turn lead to more jobs, a better high street, and a stronger local economy. 52
There’s a beautiful relationship going on in Penarth, involving coffee and concrete.
Grounds for Good and Concrete Carrot are two local businesses that are hand-crafting unique and bespoke products with a modern, industrial twist. Grounds for Good are always looking for innovative ways of re-purposing coffee grounds that would otherwise go to landfill. So, what better way than to give concrete some eco credentials! This is what Toby and Chris at Concrete Carrot were challenged with, and they did not disappoint. Grounds for Good now have a small but beautifully curated collection of concrete products that contain used coffee grounds, and that are available to purchase. Grounds for Good are a social enterprise with all profits going to support The Wallich, a national charity supporting the homeless. Go to www. groundsforgood.co.uk for more.

One door closes, another door opens. As the door at Ginger’s clothing boutique closed for the last time this summer, many more doors opened for others. It’s plain to see that Cathy Evans and her team went out on a high by donating over £25,000 worth of clothing stock and shop interiors to charity. Cathy has helped a number of charities including Smart Works, who help the homeless get back into work with smart interview attire, local fire brigades, RNLI and The Salvation Army. Cathy says: “Thank you to everyone who has supported Ginger’s over the years and don’t forget that you can still find me at Gifts @ No.9 on Windsor Road.”

Cathy says: “Our current window display is to highlight the accessible garden being built at University Hospital Llandough, by the charity Horatio’s Garden. Its story has got a bit lost locally this year, so it has been very important to get their message out. We’re selling mugs and tea towels on their behalf, and collecting any donations.” Read more about the garden on page 68. 53
THE CHANGING FACE OF BOOKSHOPS IN THE MODERN WORLD
Bookshops have been a constant in society for a long time. But with the increasing use of large corporations such as Amazon, it’s been hard for some bookshops to stay above water. We speak with Mel Griffin at Griffin Books to find out more about how the “new normal” means that, like everyone else, bookshops are having to adapt. Prior to lockdown our online sales were very limited—this changed overnight! From March onwards, we continued fulfilling orders via email or phone, but with increased demand it became clear we really needed an online shop—somewhere customers could browse our stock and buy books quickly and easily in just a few clicks. In July, we launched www. griffinbooksonline.co.uk and we haven’t looked back! We’re now able to offer a free click and collect service locally, and postal delivery worldwide. Prior to the pandemic, we also ran a series of literary events. So, in March, we also set about scheduling 54
a programme of Zoom author events and moved our Book Clubs and toddler Storytime sessions online. Our online events have proved to be really popular with audiences and authors alike. We knew how important it would be to keep that connection with our regular customers; what we didn’t foresee was how many new people we would reach by taking our events online. These offer a unique opportunity for booklovers to chat face-to-face with their favourite authors from the comfort of their living room, but just as importantly they help reduce the sense of isolation many of us have experienced during the pandemic. Establishing an online presence has enabled us to reach new customers much further afield, many of whom discovered us for the first time via social media. However, our online presence is there to complement and support the physical shop, not the other way around. We see ourselves as a community hub, and our lovely shop in the heart of Penarth’s thriving high street is a huge part of that. We’re really excited about our winter events programme—from musical memoirs and sporting greats, to bestselling crime-fiction and fantasy noir—there’s something for all tastes and interests! Griffin Books is Penarth’s only independent book shop, located at the entrance to Windsor Arcade. Visit www.ticketsource.co.uk/griffinbooks for the full programme of events.

THE DOG ATE MY TAX RETURN… If you had any other income in the tax year to 5 April 2020 aside from pensions or PAYE (where taxes are deducted automatically by an employer) then it is highly likely that you will need to complete a self assessment tax return and file it online by 31 January 2021. By this date, HMRC expect not only to receive your tax return but also payment in full of any tax due. Whilst that deadline may seem like a lifetime away right now, don’t forget there’s the small matter of the festive frivolities to contend with between now and then—on which note, 2019 was a recordbreaking year for taxpayers filing their self assessments on Christmas Day itself, with over 3,000 successful submissions (248 of which were actually filed before 8am, whilst the rest of us were only just ripping off wrapping paper and pouring our breakfast Bucks Fizz!) So to avoid feverishly gathering paperwork over There’s a the festive period in a bid full list of to avoid the automatic who needs £100 late filing penalty, to file a self our advice is always to get assessment your return in as early as tax return on possible, the advantage the Evans being that you will then Entwistle know the exact amount of website. tax you need to pay—and if paying that sum might cause

As part of the Need UK Government’s help with Winter Economy organizing a Plan, the Chancellor Time To Pay advised that self arrangement assessment taxpayers with HMRC? may defer tax due on Speak to 31 January 2021 for our team. up to 12 months via HMRC’s Time to Pay scheme, meaning you can pay tax due in smaller instalments to reduce the impact on your day-to-day cashflow. But whilst deferring payment is an option, delaying filing the return itself by 31 January 2021 is not, and when it comes to excuses on that front, HMRC have pretty much heard it all—from late filing “because my mother-in-law is a witch and put a curse on me” or “I’m too short to reach the post box” to the taxpayer who tried to claim pet food for his guard dog—a Shih Tzu (no, I kid you not)—as a tax-deductible expense. So unless you want to feature prominently in HMRC’s classic annual Top 10 Worst Late Filing Excuses (which let’s face it, is hardly a BAFTA nomination) then it’s time to start thinking about tackling that tax return paperwork pile—and we’re here for any advice you need in that regard. STAYING CREATIVE THROUGH COVID
No industry has been left untouched by COVID-19. But arguably the industry hit hardest is the arts. Who could have thought that this time that such a diverse, vibrant, beloved industry would be in trouble. Here at Penarth View, we spoke to three young creatives, only just starting out in the industry, and they give us their view on the current climate and how it has affected the industry they fell in love with. Interviews by Katherine Peach, Penarth View Sales Associate Eleanor Webster is an actor and writer, and she says: “The impact on my career has been immediate and devastating. Despite my hard work, 58
opportunities fell through. I planned on getting a retail job to support me while I found work, but even getting a day job to support my career is slim. “Any opportunities that were once there have evaporated. It’s shocking to see the lack of care the government has been giving to the arts. The money invested was welcome, but the notion of get another job was incredibly patronising. “However, it’s forced creatives to do what they do best—to find creative solutions. I feel the pandemic has forced me to be creative in ways I had never anticipated. I started my own Dungeons and Dragons podcast with my friends! I hope that this leads to a new generation of resilient artists and will inspire us to keep creating.” Cerys Salter, a dancer, says similar things: “For those of us in the graduating year of 2020, pretty much every single preconception we had about our final year was completely wrong.

PENARTH VIEW CREATIVE SECTION SPONSORED BY ROWLEY’S THE JEWELLER
THE JEWELLERS “Back in March, Northern Ballet School were preparing to open our musical to the public, the final showcase in July. We were in the final stages of rehearsal when we found out that live performances were no longer going to be allowed to take place. Our thoughts at the time were hopefully we’ll be allowed back in May, or at the latest, June, to complete our training and perform together one last time. “Performers now find themselves out of work. Confused rules and regulations have left people having to reconsider the careers they’ve dedicated their lives to. Working in completely different fields to earn money— something that many performers usually do on the side—is now starting to feel less on the side and more all-consuming. “The government needs to realise sooner rather than later that getting on the wrong side of the most dramatic industry there is is a bad idea.” Local photographer, Eric AydinBarberini, explains that all creatives have the ability to adapt. He says: “The industry has been treated as disposable, which is no surprise considering the attitudes embedded in British culture towards the arts. “Routes into the industry have never been simple and when social gatherings and networking in person is off the table, it’s even harder to get a foot in the door. “However, communities have flourished within lockdown, embracing new ways of connecting and creating. The pandemic has led institutions to cater for audiences they would not have thought of before. “Most of what I shot pre-Covid, was gigs, festivals and events, which meant that my work ground to a halt. Thankfully a number of my jobs moved online—teaching classes, facilitating workshops and remote projects.”

So, it is clear to see by the experiences of Eleanor, Cerys and Eric, that despite the pandemic, the arts sprung to attention to do what they do best. New shows, music, theatre live-streaming, online performances. Creative people kept our spirits high through this difficult time—where would we all be without literature, music, movies, photographs, dance, and more in our lives? We are certain that this industry is going to come out of this stronger than ever before. Y ‘SWS OF LIFE’ I COOL CYMRU Geiriau gan Stifyn Parri, cynhyrchydd, diddanwr, cyflwynydd a mentor. Fe hefyd greodd SWS, y gymdeithas alltud Gymreig fyd-enwog.
SWS—Social, Welsh and Sexy— y gymdeithas Gymraeg fydenwog sy’n llawn dop o slebs a hwyl, efo partïo’n sy’n denu enwau fel Bryn Terfel, Sian Lloyd a Colin Jackson. A dyma’r stori tu ôl y logo unigryw! Roeddwn yn digwydd cael swper efo Catherine Zeta Jones—as you do—ac mi ofynnais iddi, ar ôl gwydred neu dri o win, fydde hi’n barod i roi mwy o finlliw a chusanu darn o bapur gwyn i mi, er mwyn i ni gopïo ei gwefusau a’u ddefnyddio fel logo. Cytunodd hi. Cusanodd hi’r papur ac mi wnaethon ni gario ’mlaen i wledda ac yfed. Pan orffennwyd ein logo cwl, roedd y wasg wrth eu bodd, yn enwedig o glywed mai gwefusau mwya’ enwog y byd oedd yr ysbrydoliaeth tu ôl i’r pout. Doedd hi ddim yn ofynnol i mi gyfadde mai colli ‘gwefusau’ Catherine wnes i ar ôl gormod o win, a doedd neb ddim callach! O fewn ychydig, roedd llythrennau bras ar dop y papurau newydd: “Catherine’s pout gives Welsh Club kiss of life”, er bod y gwefusau hynny falle’n dal dan ryw fwrdd yn

Soho, ac mi aeth SWS o nerth i nerth. Ar yr un pryd â thwf SWS, roedd Catatonia yn sgubo’r siartiau, ac roedd y don Gymreig ’ma yn dechre hawlio’r penawdau. Dyma oedd y cyfnod y ganwyd ymadrodd newydd yn y papurau i ddisgrifio’r Gymru newydd, sef Cool Cymru. Yn ystod cyfnod Cool Cymru mi gafodd SWS sylw’r wasg yng Nghymru a Lloegr, a thu hwnt, gyda’r papurau mawrion yn rhuthro i gael llunie Matthew Rhys, Ioan Gruffudd, Rhys Ifans a llawer mwy, a sylw ar deledu a radio Prydeinig hefyd. Mi ymddangosodd Bryn Terfel yn un o bartïon y gymdeithas, a syfrdanu pawb wrth ganu Pen-blwydd Hapus a’n hanthem genedlaethol ar risiau’r Groucho Club. O fewn dim, roedd ’na dros bum mil o aelodau, a finne’n cael hwyl y diawl yn trefnu partïon mwy a mwy cofiadwy bob tro. Wedi i’r stori fawr dorri am Monica Lewinsky a Bill Clinton, mi wnes i logi llong ar y Thames o’r enw HMS President, gan eirio’r gwahoddiad: “Come and celebrate SWS’s birthday—let’s all go down on the President!” Trodd pawb i fyny. Mi drefnais i ddraig fawr wedi ei gwneud o rew, fel vodka luge, i groesawu pawb ar y llong—gymaint gwell na blydi Welsh cake—ac embarasio ambell i un sych wrth imi dywallt y fodca i geg y ddraig, tra oedden nhwythau yn gorfod ei sugno o dwll ei thin. A little snippet from Stifyn’s book— “Out with It!” Following my own path has meant I have also followed my own dress sense over the years, much to many people’s amusement. These days, I’m happiest in a black t-shirt and jeans, or a happy shirt if I’m on TV. I do remember to wear trousers too, of course. But when I was younger I used to have a ball just experimenting. I’m still proud remembering the orange council dungarees, with jacket to match, I bought once and wore forever. I’d go to London for the weekend feeling like one of them, while nobody batted an eye, though back home rooms would hush as I entered and you’d psychically hear them think, “What the earth has he got on today?” I once booked into the Ritz for the night, when I was eighteen, and waltzed in, in a new pair of legwarmers that were fashionable at the time. “Excuse me, sir,” said the concierge, peering down at my woollen accessories, “We have a strict dress code for the restaurant.” Out with it! “I have just had an operation on my ankles,” I said firmly. “This way, sir,” he said quickly and ushered me to the best table in the room. Confidence. Or maybe cheek. Probably both. Read more stories in the book “Out with It!”, full of anecdotes of backstage drama, tantrums and embarrassment with celebs, royalty and even his poor mother. Out now.

THE ICONIC TAILS OF WALES Influencer
Dave Deane
Penarth-based Veterinary Surgeon
Having lived and worked in South Wales for 11 years, initially in Rhondda Cynon Taf and Cardiff, I have finally found my home in beautiful Penarth, where I also volunteer as an RNLI crew member. Growing up as the son of a dentist may have influenced my passion for veterinary dentistry.
Given this is the heritage issue of Penarth View, we thought we’d take a look at the strong heritage of Welsh dog breeds. Most Welsh breeds have strong working drives, being bred by the Welsh gentry for hunting, herding and guarding purposes, and so tend to be energetic. As such, they’re best suited to homes that enjoy leading an active lifestyle. These are just a few Welsh breeds, but when choosing a dog to join your family there are many breeds to choose from, including crossbreeds. This can seem quite overwhelming, and unfortunately many people are influenced by breeds that are fashionable but may not be the best choice for you and your family.
62
Choosing a breed for your home needs careful thought, so here are some things to consider: Do your research on the breed, or if they are a cross breed get as much background information from either the breeder or the re-homing centre. What is the temperament and energy levels of the breed, and do you have enough space for all that energy? How much will it cost to care for them over their lifetime and can you afford this? Is the breed predisposed to specific health issues and should you avoid it, or at least plan for the ongoing costs of veterinary care.
✓ ✓ ✓ ✓
Pets can bring so much joy to our lives through love and companionship, but a rushed decision may lead to regret, behaviour issues and at worst the need to re-home. If you want any help and advice on purchasing a new dog or which breed would be suitable for you, please contact a veterinary professional and make use of the many resources online, from both The Dogs Trust and The Blue Cross.

Welsh Springer Spaniel
I am slightly biased, as this breed is a favourite of mine, and I have always loved Springers. The Welsh Springer Spaniel is smaller than their English counterpart but larger than a Cocker Spaniel. Their hallmark features are a more tapered nose than the English Springer Spaniel and a striking red and white coat. They are a versatile breed, being both an energetic working dog and also a very loving family pet.
Welsh Corgi
Did you know that Welsh Corgis can be further separated into two further breeds—the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi? They were originally cattle herding dogs and are one of the smallest breeds in this category of dog. Although the Pembroke and the Cardigan are very similar and likely from a shared ancestry, they seem to have different tales of origin. The Pembroke is seen more commonly, largely attributed to Queen Elizabeth II, but they have been a part of Welsh history for over 1,000 years.
Welsh Terrier
Although not common, they are thought to be one of the oldest purebred dogs still in existence in the UK. They require some patience when it comes to training, but they are a handsome breed with a cheeky personality, and can bring a lot of joy to family life.

HAPPY, INSPIRING, NURTURING Ensuring pupil education is full of happy, nurturing, and inspiring experiences, Westbourne Prep School leads the way with its creative, outside-thebox teaching methods. We speak to Joanne Chinnock, Head of Westbourne Prep to find out more about their FAB and STEM school models, and how, through lockdown, pupils are still achieving amazing results.
Can you tell us about your FAB school model?
It’s a great teaching model that helps pupils learn about Forest And Beach environments. Our model has been adapted from the Forest School method to suit our surroundings on the beautiful Welsh coastline. The method also helps us strike the balance between creative and academic learning. We brought in a new member of staff to make sure the two elements could be combined, and for two mornings every term the children go out and learn about the environment hands-on. 64
We’ve had year two pupils come back from Porthkerry Park explaining how the waterways work, from weather patterns, rivers, how water travels back to the sea and how it’s linked with the moon cycles—which is amazing! It’s gone down so well with the children, who are all kitted up in their wet gear and get stuck in!
Can you tell us about the STEM model?
We love the STEM model! Once a week the whole school comes together and works in groups around four main principles—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Each group is given a task that feeds into a bigger project. One of our recent projects has been around movement and structure, and the results are amazing! Our early years have been building structures and foundations to hold up models, our Key Stage 1 pupils have made a model with pulleys and elastic bands to understand how muscles work, right the way up to Key Stage 2 where pupils are making a robotic hand, using Raspberry Pis—tiny computers on which our students learn programming and coding.
www.penarthview.co.uk
What message would you like to get out to future pupils and parents?
Our pupils are some of the happiest I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with, and that’s down to our wonderful staff—most of whom have invested years of good teaching in our school. Everyone here devotes their time to the school and our pupils. Also, our class sizes promote an environment that achieves brilliant results—and that’s all pupils, whether academically or creatively minded.
How have you adapted to the pandemic?
We knew we had to adapt quickly before the original restrictions came in, so we set up daily online learning platforms for all of our pupils, which enabled our teachers to do live lessons. Our teachers came up with more imaginative ways of teaching, by using the home environment to our advantage, and it meant that our STEM model was used more to facilitate core subjects. Today, our safety practices are followed to keep everyone safe and healthy. Our small class sizes help manage social distancing measures and the children are loving their thermal camera snaps every morning!
What makes Westbourne Prep stand out?
Our relationships between our parents, staff and pupils is second to none. Our teaching staff go above and beyond. Our staff taught over half term to ensure pupils still achieved the best results, and have laid down the groundwork to make virtual learning a success.

KEEPING CHILDREN ENTERTAINED
How have you adapted to the pandemic?
Making magical moments for children and parents has always come naturally to Liz and the LittleFizz team. Like many of us, COVID-19 and lockdown measures have made us all adapt to find new ways to socialise in a new world of social distancing. Sharing her creativity, tenacity, and passion, it’s clear to see how LittleFizz goes above and beyond, even during these difficult times! 66
Safety is key and we’ve worked hard to provide an environment which is fun, but still meets social distancing guidelines. Everything we do, right the way down to how we play games and sing songs, has changed! I’m now amazing at lip-sinking with a prerecorded track of myself, and I’m much better at working technology than I ever was! Interaction is a big part of what we do, so we’ve had to work hard to make sure our online and in-person sessions are even better than before.
What has been the reaction?
Amazing! We’ve had to chop and change our sessions from indoors, to outdoors, to online and back again to fit in with government guidelines. At the time of writing, it looks like we’re heading that way again! We’re very grateful to all of the wonderful people that are still joining us, still taking part, and still enjoying the social element and human interaction we bring to our classes—albeit at a distance!

What advice do you have to give to others running a business?
I’ve been running my Baby and Toddler Music and Movement Classes for 14 years, and I’m always humbled by the amazing human connections we’ve made. I think opening yourself up to those experiences is the best thing about running business. However there have also been many challenges and an unbelievable amount of work. Working seven days a week has been my normal for many years! So my advice would be to prepare to work hard, but don’t lose sight of the benefits either.
What tips would you give to mums and dads to keep their little ones happy? • • • • • •

Stay active. Join an online class, or sing and dance to one of our songs. Where possible, get outside in the fresh air as much as you can. Treasure positive moments. Tap into children’s natural ability to have fun. Yours is in there too! Create fun environments. Check out our online articles for loads of ideas. Create safe environments with COVID-free conversations and news. Promote resilience by explaining the situation clearly—it’s amazing what kids pick up! Don’t compare yourself to others— focus on your own family unit.

What can people expect from attending your sessions?
Our main aim is to bring joy! Seeing your child interact with other children and play as they should (with thanks to the under-11 rule) has really helped lift people’s spirits. We provide a safe space where fun is the main focus and takes the pressure off Mum and Dad. You can literally see babies come to life, just by being in small groups with others, and it is a big outlet of energy for the toddlers, which I think everyone needs, pandemic or not!

Only the best in Dinas Despite it all, some good has come out of the restrictions this year. It seems that the community in Dinas Powys has taken to their allotments and it has definitely paid off, especially for Mr Marsh who received the prize for Best Allotment this year, and Mr Bennet who won runner up.
The charity creates and nurtures beautiful, accessible gardens in NHS spinal injury centres to support patients, their loved ones and NHS staff who are affected by spinal injury. To date, they’ve opened vibrant gardens in Salisbury, Scotland, Stoke Mandeville, Oswestry and London, which are all cared for by dedicated teams of volunteers, who are led by a Head Gardener. In time, they plan to plant hope in all eleven NHS regional spinal injury centres. Horatio’s Garden Wales will be their sixth project and has been designed by two-time RHS Chelsea gold medal winner, Sarah Price. COFFEE CULTURE TO HOMELESSNESS Influencer

I have a background in pharmacology, psychiatry and addictions spanning over 30 years. I love to consider all things to do with health and wellbeing, of both the mind and the body. I believe good lifestyle decisions are made when we have the right information.
Sadly, away from the good feel of coffee houses, the past few decades have seen an exponential rise in homelessness across Wales. Although data capture is far from perfect, what we do have makes for uncomfortable reading. The numbers of street homeless have increased by 17% in the last year alone. Homelessness is a complex problem and unfortunately there are many barriers which leave individuals unable to easily resolve their predicament. Yet, we all appreciate how important it is to have a home in determining our own health, wellbeing and prospects in life. So, what if drinking your daily coffee could directly help a homeless individual? This was the conversation had by Amy and Rosie, and how their company Grounds for Good® was conceived. Drawing upon their years of individual experience, they have harnessed three angles of good, and have curated a gorgeous collection of personal care and lifestyle products.

AS NEW NOW AS IT WAS THEN Influencer
Sylvie Pasquier Penarth-based Events Organiser
I was born in Troyes, in the well-known Champagne area of France. Fashion has always been a passion of mine—I was sketching at the age of 8—and I studied haute couture in Paris. I now live in the Vale of Glamorgan with my daughter and a little dog called Lili.
Fashion is connected to our lives in many aspects. It dictates what we wear and makes it available to us. It is something that we all follow, even those who think they do not! And it is highly influenced by society and culture! Intrinsic and dynamic, it has always been about aspiration. Going back as far as the Middle Ages, when the Kings and Queens of Europe, and their noblemen, were the ones establishing new trends. Le Mercure Galant, the first ever gazette to report on the fashion world and first published in 1672, was French. Read throughout Europe, it played a pivotal role in circulating news about fashion and engravings displaying the latest trends, as well as art and theatre reviews, poems and society gossip. Queen Marie Antoinette was a keen follower of the Mercure, and was renowned for being obsessed with fashion. For decades to come, the clothes being worn around the world were based on designs that came out of Paris. In the
76
20th century, Gabrielle Coco Chanel was among the key designers who made a lasting impression on women’s fashion! She opened her first shop in Paris just before the first World War in 1913. Her designs and choice of fabric, in particular jersey, allowed women to leave their corset behind and lead a more active life. Coco Chanel will always be remembered for the Little Black Dress

created in 1926 and which became a classic piece of 20th-century womenswear. It was brought up to date by Hubert de Givenchy for Audrey Hepburn in 1961, who made it famous in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The aim of clothes is not only functional. What we wear on the outside mirrors who we are on the inside. It establishes a way of affirming our personality and our own identity, and in turn boosts our confidence. Indeed, Hepburn once shared, “His are the only clothes in which I am myself. He is far more than a couturier, he is a creator of personality!” The emergence of globalisation in the last century, although viewed by some as a threat to the world’s cultural diversity, has made us better aware of other cultures and traditions. It had a strong and positive influence on fashion designs, reflected not only in the way garments were cut or shaped, but also in their colour and pattern. Influences from Asia, India, Sri Lanka and Africa have been echoed many times in the collection of designers such as Yves St Laurent and more recently Valentino in his Spring Summer collection of 2016. However, since the beginning of this new century, the impact of social
PenarthView #LovePenarth
media websites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, or media sharing sites like Instagram, YouTube or Snapchat have contributed greatly to the latest change in fashion trends and created a definite shift. The time when fashion trends were dictated by designers or industry experts is becoming rapidly obsolete as people with creative concepts of their own now have the tools to share them. 2020 has so far been one of the most challenging years for us all, and it will be interesting to see what comes of it. No doubt fashion will reflect the drifts and swings that the world has had to endure over the past few months. Nevertheless, it has forced us, after years of excessive consumerism and shopaholism, to reconsider and refocus on what is profoundly important. Bringing along a growing awareness towards the huge amount of waste produced in the world, with an eye on greater sustainability. People might be buying less, but they are buying better and that, in my modest opinion, cannot be a bad thing! BEING ANTI-RACIST IN 2020 Words by Maxine Pwele with Demi Olutunmogun and Emily Pemberton
On 25 May 2020, George Floyd was killed in broad daylight by a white police officer kneeling on his neck for over 8 minutes. 3 days after his death, #BlackLivesMatter had been tweeted 8.8 million times. 8 days after his death, tens of millions of black squares were posted online. 150 days after his death, it appears to be business as usual. This cycle—public outrage caused by tragic black murders at the hands of American police officers followed by a lull in action—has been characteristic of the Black Lives Matter movement online since its origins in 2013.
78
www.penarthview.co.uk
#BLM is not merely a hashtag which is no longer trending, it is a grassroots movement focussed on bringing an end to racially motivated violence against black people. Simply because it seems to have disappeared from mainstream news cycles does not mean it should disappear from our minds. As 3 young, mixed-race women, race has, and continues to be, something we cannot ignore in our day-to-day lives. Growing up ashamed and embarrassed to wear our hair out for fear that we will be petted like an animal at a zoo. Having an undeterrable determination and drive to succeed because you feel you have to prove a point. Feeling out of place walking into a lecture at university being the only person of colour in the room. These are feelings which I had suppressed and struggled to express before the events of this summer. Race has always been a part of my identity, but the momentum and solidarity of the movement this summer encouraged a lot of personal reflection which allowed me to find the language to express these ideas. Tearing down institutionalised racism will be a long and arduous process, but one we must endure. However, there is a way we can see change today: individual action. No matter the colour of our skin we should all take time to reflect on how race has affected our lives. We should all take time to educate ourselves on racerelated struggles, especially those that have happened on our doorstep. Being aware of the society we have come from is essential for building our equal future. Ending modern-day racism cannot be left solely in the hands of those with authority. We all have influence and we must act to be the change we want to see.
PenarthView #LovePenarth
Understanding why the Black Lives Matter movement matters takes time, effort, and a willingness to listen to other points of view. The BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) community makes up 2.4% of the population in the Vale Of Glamorgan*, roughly 3,000 people. Whilst that may not seem like a large number, by talking, engaging, and learning from each other, everyone can make a difference. We spoke to Penarthians Rubbi Ali and Phil Lewis about their experiences and their thoughts on the #BLM movement. Interviews by Will Summers, Penarth View Co-editor
Can you tell us a little bit about your background?
Rubbi: I’m from the Cardiff Bay docks, known for its multicultural community, and it’s where the majority of my family live. I moved to Penarth five years ago, but I’ve always lived in South Wales. Phil: I moved to Penarth from Pontypool when I was eight years old, and I’ve always called Penarth my home.
* Local Labour Force Survey/Annual Population Survey: Ethnicity by Welsh local authority, Welsh Government, published 24 September 2020.
79
How do you think the BAME community is represented currently?
P: Penarth is quite affluent—you definitely can see that it’s predominantly a white, middle-class area. In terms of the BAME community being represented, I think that with the small number of BAME people that live here, striking a balance between representation and making sure that BAME people are appropriately represented is important. R: Conversations around representation are important from all levels. Whether it’s high-profile public organisations like the MET Police, or private organisations ensuring that they employ more diverse workforces, right down to how we all as individuals can be doing more to make everyone feel welcome and represented, regardless of the colour of their skin.
Do you think more can be done to improve the lives of BAME people?
R: Definitely and there are some great changes already happening. In my place of work, for example, the hiring process has changed to remove any details from applications and CVs to ensure that the process isn’t based on gender, race, nationality, sexual orientation or religious beliefs, so we can strive to get a diverse and multicultural workforce.
Have you ever experienced direct or indirect racism?
P: My experience of living here is very positive—the worst I’ve ever had is friends telling me I’ve caught a nice colour from being on holiday. Of course, they get plenty of banter back from me too! R: Nothing to note of recently. However, my worst experience of direct racism was years ago. I was 19 and had finished my day at work when a man jumped out of a car and yelled directly in my face while I was waiting for a bus. His comments were racist, sexist and threatening. The experience shook me back then, but we were brought up not to react—that’s
80
the best thing. These days it might be school kids trying to act like they have something to prove, normally in groups.
Do you think society is changing?
P: I think we can sometimes take Penarth for granted. Penarth is generally a very welcoming and tolerant place to be. I think the Black Lives Matter movement is really highlighting important social injustices, however, my personal experience has been a very positive one. The colour of my skin isn’t really something that stands out to people, which I think is the main reason why I’ve never had any negative experiences. R: Yes, definitely, but there’s still some way to go. When I moved to Penarth with my partner, my family were wary of me moving to a white, middle-class area. Traditionally, we’ve felt safer in multicultural communities, but Penarth has been a wonderful place to live. We live in a world of clickbait news which pushes society to base opinions and views on assumptions and leaves very little factual background. This results in communities being marginalised. Until we all make the effort to learn about different cultures, and communities and get the facts, we’ll always fail at building a diverse society where everyone is equal and feels safe.
